Speaking of beaches and vacations, how about taking a culinary journey to Greece? YiaYia’s Kitchen is our restaurant of the month, and if traditional Greek feasting is what you’re after, then we highly recommend you pop in for a visit. The staff are incredibly friendly (ask for Gerasimos – AKA Gerry), the food is amazingly satisfying, and the atmosphere of this popular, loved by locals’ eatery, is oh-soinviting. Greek music in your ears, the smell of freshly made to order food floating out the kitchen… it’s a cuisine cruise all on its own. Our beauty section is also a must-read. It’s treatments galore over there… from brows and manicures to facials, Botox need-to-knows and the ultimate spa experience. Our beauty editor has also collected her gym bag essentials, to make sure your beauty regime doesn’t suffer just because your body is. Until next month, lovelies! xoxo

WEEKENDS IN MULDERSDRIFT They’ll never be the same again…

L

ooking for a great outdoors hideaway? We’ve found it at Kloofzicht Lodge. We popped into the Oevermeer Bistro for a lazy luncheon, and the best news is… it’s within a forty-minute drive.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm. Kloofzicht Lodge & Spa, Kromdraai Road, Muldersdrift 5 www.oevermeerbistro.co.za | 1 011 317 0600 @oevermeerbistro

MOODY COWS make the smoothest gelato!

With a sleek inspirational-chic vibe and a fantastic menu, Oevermeer is one of the best options for lunch in the country. They specialise in craft beers and bistro-style dining, so don’t expect anything fancy. No bells, no whistles, just easy-style eating, done exceptionally well. Each ingredient has been thought out by award-winning Chef Chris Tustian, and while the produce may be humble, it’s of the finest quality and excellence. Fitting with the spirit of the bistro vibe, the menu offers a variety of options. We recommend ordering the Kloofzicht cheese platter to start. With a selection of decadent local cheeses, homemade preserves and bread, it will kick start those taste buds. For mains order one of their rock star burgers - without a doubt a signature item. It’s so mind-blowingly good you’ll be surprised you’re only paying ninety bucks. The brawny beef burger is slapped with mature cheddar and condensed milk mustard (all their sauces are made in the kitchen from scratch), and finished off with hand cut potato wedges. If you’re a veggie, order a pizza - the base and sauces are all made from scratch! Save room for dessert. They’re famous for their giant Freakshakes, and it’d be a sin to leave without trying one. Oreo chocolate, banana and peanut or bubble gum... we guarantee you’ll thank us later.

onestly Hello Joburgers, who doesn’t love ice-cream? When we say the gelato-artisanal Italian ice-cream over at Moody Cow Gelato & Coffee Co in Clearwater Mall will change your life, we’re not talking a load of bull.

Low fat, handmade fresh every day with no artificial colorants or preservatives, gluten-free and Halaal-certified, Moody Cow has every flavor gelato your palate can imagine. You’re spoilt for choice between icecream sandwiches, traditional waffles and ice-cream, the modern waffle stick smothered in delish toppings and the funky waffle tacos. That’s right, we said waffle TACOS! The coffee is off the charts too.

We had to stop ourselves from licking the plate. Another must-try is the divine Moody Choc Float – steamed milk and chocolate, with a scoop of any flavour gelato you like. 5 www.carafrew.com | t @CaraFrew @carafrew What projects are you currently working on? I’m finishing up my debut album - I’ve been writing and recording for over a year now! We’ve finalized production and are now focusing on mixing and mastering, as well as album artwork. Give us a tidbit about your new single? Dance was written the morning I found out that a close friend was an addict. I wanted the song to be uplifting, upbeat and energetic. I wanted to write about making the most of your life, always looking for that silver lining, loving yourself and not discriminating. We all deal with issues, so we should support each other and ’dance’ together, rather than put each other down. Why have you asked locals to participate in the DANCE music video? I thought Dance was the perfect video to get my Frew Crew involved – if they wanted to - because the song is all about ‘dancing together’, not caring about what others say, living your best life and having fun. What do you miss most about home when you travel? My family of course! We’re very close! Favourite place to eat when visiting Jozi? I love the Tofu steak at Yamato.

AN ENTICING

evolution of a fine-dining experience

N

estled in the heart of the iconic Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, is a dining experience you’ll never forget. The hotels flagship eatery, View Restaurant is known for its stylish, urban chic design and mouthwatering food, which is whipped together by the talented Chef Farrel Hirsch and his team.

Although he was born in Durban, Chef Farrel moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 13, and when he was old enough, began studying professional cookery in Nottingham. In fact, he was declared runner-up for that city’s 2008 Young Chef of the Year competition. Having spent five years working alongside many of Europe and South Africa’s acclaimed chefs, Chef Farrel is more than capable of creating dishes that will knock the socks of any guests that dine at View Restaurant. He’s cooked in the kitchens of the Singita group of luxury lodges, in the Oyster Box Hotel’s Grill Room Restaurant, and his two most recent posts were in Cape Town, where he worked with Peter Tempelhoff at the acclaimed Greenhouse Restaurant. He’s even flambéd in The Test Kitchen, seconding Luke Dale-Roberts before becoming head chef at View Restaurant. Chef Farrel loves to travel, experience different cultures and meet new people - all of which reflects in his food, and warm personality. “I love meeting the people I’m cooking for, and sharing the stories of the food I make with them,” he says. His travels have certainly broadened his culinary horizons. “If you look close enough at View’s dishes there will always be a classic thought behind it but pushed out far enough so that it is something completely new,” he explains.

10

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, View Restaurant opened in 2014 and has fast become a favourite fine-dining destination for Joburg foodies. Here, the food is the star, and not the chef. The seasonal menu (which changes every week) offers guests refined, contemporary cuisine… we’re talking about delicacies like crayfish and foie gras, sea bass and oysters, even lobster, tomato, burrate and biltong. I believe that local truly is lekker. We don’t use any imported ingredients – the furthest away we source from is Cape Town. This means that our international guests are truly able to taste the very best that South Africa has to offer. “South Africa produces a bounty of high quality ingredients, and so we want our diners to taste the finest this country has to offer,” Chef Farrel explains. The weekly menu gives him and his team the chance to showcase the finest, freshest local and seasonal produce in seriously creative – and delicious ways. The View Restaurant works with trusted local suppliers and farmers to provide special ingredients, including foraged mushrooms, Karoo lamb and fynbos, while the fresh herbs and veggies come straight from the hotel’s new food garden.

If you haven’t had the chance to dine at View Restaurant, we highly recommend you make a plan. The restaurant is perfectly located on a hillside and opens onto a sunset terrace, giving diners sweeping panoramic views across the Johannesburg Zoo and the prestigious neighborhoods of The Parks. If the view doesn’t interest you (which we doubt), you’ll also be able to see those talented chefs hard at work in the kitchen, through the View's linear window. Although we’re sure Chef Farrel wouldn’t mess with a perfectly good thing, he does have a few changes up his sleeve. An evolution, if you will. The first of which is the launch if Preview - a bar-inspired, casual dining experience that offers small plates and fantastic drinks! It will be a unique venue, the ideal spot for private, corporate and social functions. A bit more casual than the sophisticated setting of View Restaurant, but just as classy. We have no doubt that Preview will soon be the hottest venue in Jozi, and we hope to see you there! Hello Joburgers, you don’t want to miss our exclusive video interview with Chef Farrel Hirsch. shopping AFFORDABLE AND ADORABLE Jozi goes mental for Miniso!

We adore absolutely everything about this store, and the brand. They opened a store in Menlyn Park, Pretoria and golly, did people flock there. It’s not difficult to see why either… the stores are spacious, with gorgeous pops off colour, and they’re jam-packed with goodies. Anything you could want, they’ve got! Think beauty products like compact mirrors and cosmetics, bags, purses, gorgeous little home décor items like vases, mugs and ceramic frying pans, as well as sunglasses, adorable stuffed animals that your little ones will love, and tons (and tons!) of jewellery. Miniso has over 200 stores in more than 50 countries, and word on the street is that there are plans to open another 50 further stores across South Africa. Whoop! What we love about this brand is that Miniso update their product offering every week. This means

lucky customers have more products to choose from, encouraging the personalised, intelligent purchase trend that the brand believes in. Did we mention how affordable this place is? Nothing in the stunning Miniso store will make you cringe when you pull out your purse. Everything is incredibly reasonably priced, and all the products are as cute as a button! Don’t be ashamed if you find that you want everything… we had to convince ourselves to put some things back. Miniso HR Director, Phoebe Dongxiang stated, “We pursue a simple and natural life philosophy. Our aim is to design and manufacture excellent goods at honest prices, taking into account the earth’s resources and the environment to fully respect nature and the essence of the product.” The staff will make you smile and the products will make your heart sing. dining out GET YOUR B

Greek on! Traditional, tasty feasting

each white wood tables, dressed in vibrant blue and white striped tablecloths, open shelves stocked with ingredients and a fiery open kitchen… you’d be easily convinced that you’re sitting in a beach-side café, Ouzo in hand, waiting on your traditional Greek feast.

There’s a reason why YiaYia’s Kitchen in Greenstone is absolutely bustling, pretty much every night of the week. When we popped in, each table was occupied, either by laughing families or whispering couples. As we were about to find out, they come for the incredibly friendly service and even better food. The atmosphere is light and happy in this café-style eatery. The summer breeze bought the tempting smells from the kitchen over to our table, and we couldn’t wait to jump into something delicious. Now, everything is made to order, so you may have to wait a little while, but believe us… it’s totally worth it! You can’t go to a Greek restaurant and not order a portion of haloumi, are we right? Three decadent slices grilled to perfection, served with a tangy tzatziki dip and steaming hot pita bread with just a hint of garlic. The haloumi has that perfect, sensual bounce… it was the ideal way to whet our appetites as we waited for our mains. Of course, we ordered a traditional gyro - a Greek style pita wrap. Packed with beef souvlaki, tomato, onion, that tangy tzatziki and a handful of fresh feta, this is a mmm-mouthful! It comes with a serving of the most delicious potato wedges (known as patates) that we’ve ever tasted, and it’s one of the most satisfyingly fulling meals we’ve had in a while. We highly recommend that you order a hearty portion of the Kalamari; grilled or fried, it’s served with a traditional Greek salad, those delish patates sprinkled with fresh oregano, pita bread and a bowl of skordalia. Skordalia is a thick puree made with crushed garlic and a bulky base, which can be a purée of potatoes, walnuts and almonds. Everything on the dish complimented each other; the kalamari was soft and tender and do not be afraid to dunk everything in that skordalia. Yum!

Thank heavens we didn’t… those bite-size portions of layered filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts and held together with a sweet concoction of syrup and cinnamon blew our minds. If you feel it’s a bit sweet, then gulp down a glass of the Village ice tea; homemade with an infusion of summer fruits and fresh herbs, it’s the most refreshing taste on earth. Seriously.

Words Victoria Taylor

Everything we wanted was taken care of by the incredibly charming and oh-so knowledgeable Gerasimos, AKA Gerry. His passion for the food and customers is evident, as he weaves his ways through the tables, smiling at the regulars and helping the newbies decide what to try. He insisted that we try the Baklava for dessert, and we just couldn’t say no.

T

he Clico Boutique Hotel and Restaurant are truly special… where food, drink and design blend effortlessly.

The Clico restaurant opened in October 2015, and offers delicate European-style savoury recipes. The tasting menu changes

monthly, and the a-la-carte menu changes biannually - so there’s always innovation and stateof-the-art to try. The setting is intimate and cosy, with a beautiful fresh design element. We love the private champagne room, which seats up to ten people. It’s the perfect hub for you to enjoy any time of the year! The six-course wine-pairing menu captures the essence of

seasonal flavours, using their natural essence and are sourced locally. Each course is impeccably balanced, with a perfect wine pairing thanks to chef Marnus Scholly. Marnus is a graduate of The Chef School for Food and Wine, where he completed a diploma in Food Preparation and Culinary arts. Expect specialized vintages

such as Eagles Nest Merlot and Morgenster Cab Franc, paired with delectable soups, butternut raviloli, lamb shoulder and impala rump. Champagne in one hand and this cuisine in the other? He loves nothing more than meeting new people over a maple crumpet mountain – how sweet! Coming from the property market, Kevin has an eye for opportunity. Having always had a dalliance with the notion of owning a coffee shop, he saw the chance to convert a restaurant in Linden into a coffee shop and jumped at the idea of doing something different, as did his partners. The coffee shop concept developed into a restaurant. The installation of the renowned pizza oven, in which many of the meals

are prepared, offers a unique complexity when it comes to the menu. Freshly prepared wholesome food is what Kevin promises patrons. The bright, airy ambience adds to the dining experience, and the black and white awning and interior, with bursts of yellow, reflect the friendliness of the space. The longstanding staff are testament to the special space that Kevin’s built for his staff and guests. A firm favourite to start the day has to be the ‘Elvis’ - a sweet and savory breakfast treat of ciabatta, smeared with crunchy peanut butter, bananas fried in maple syrup and topped with crispy bacon. uice cleansing is all the rage. We tried it for ourselves, and here’s what happened.

What is it? A five-day juice cleanse with Juice Revolution delivered to your front door. Who are they? Juice Revolution was founded in 2012. It’s run and owned by husband and wife team, Fiona and Hugo Stander.

Words Bianca Spinner

What do they offer? They specialize in the creation of 100% pure, cold pressed juices and smoothies, made from raw, whole fruit and vegetables. All products are free from preservatives, added sugar and artificial ingredients. The task: We were sent 2 five-day super juice cleanses. We wanted to see the difference; physically and mentally.

What’s included 20 x Cold pressed juices (500ml) 5 x Cold pressed juices (340ml) 5 x Ginger shots (50ml) 5 x Detox teas 5 x Supplement sachets (MultiNutrient, PhytoSaccharides, Potassium, Omega 3 Fish Oil) Program booklet Coaching and support Participants: Justyn our MD, and Bianca our Beauty Editor took on the five-day cleanse. Justyn is a runner and has competed in many triathlons. Bianca does yoga twice a week and walks her dogs. Results: Justyn lost 3kg. He revealed that the first two days were the hardest. He suffered from fatigue and constant

headaches, but after day two, he felt reinvigorated and even went for a short 4km run. The juices were delicious, fulfilling and satisfying, and the daily mailers offered great support and motivation to stick with the programme.

5 DAYS OF DETOX JUICES

Bianca lost 2kg. She said that drinking freshly squeezed fruit and veggie juices was easy for her. She didn’t experience any headaches or body aches, but she cut out caffeine, alcohol and refined sugar for three days prior to the cleanse (as instructed.) She enjoyed that the cleanse programme begins with an apple zinger shot in the morning. She liked the fact you also receive herbal teas and supplements with the cleanse. The teas helped, especially on day four and five when all she wanted was to chew on something.

KEEP IT POPPIN’

for Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen - officially in Jozi!

C

hicken lovers can rejoice, thanks to the American restaurant branded chicken, Popeyes. The Popeyes recipe is based on a 300-year old culinary tradition - that’s a lot of history in a piece of chicken! Renowned for their crispy, succulent, can’t-get-enough of it chicken, this eatery is worth the visit… and calories.

The first Popeyes restaurant in South Africa opened in July, in the Sandton City Food Court. Popeyes restaurants offer signature bone-in fried chicken, available in spicy or mild flavors. There’s also boneless chicken tenders and a variety of delicious signature sides, including the fan favorite Cajun fries. We tried and tested ‘em all, and none of it disappointed! Go on Hello Joburgers, don’t chicken out, give them a visit! 5 www.popeyes.co.za | 1 011 783 3555 T @popeyes_sa | @popeyes_sa

DID YOU KNOW?

People think the restaurant got its name from the spinach-loving cartoon character. The name actually came from a famous fictional 1970’s detective, Detective Jimmy ‘Popeye’ Doyle. Popeyes currently has restaurants in over 25 countries. Popeyes founder, Al Copeland, created a one-of-a-kind chicken recipe that is marinated in Louisiana-inspired seasonings. It’s then hand battered, breaded and fried, creating that ‘juicy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the outside’ effect.

THE 4 PILLARS OF ANTI-AGEING

by Skin Renewal

Unfortunately, society responds better to good-looking people. We may feel more confident when we look our best, but it can be damaging to strive to become someone else in the process. Simply being the best version of ourselves is a much healthier approach. “It’s important to understand that a glowing, youthful complexion is part of a holistic approach. Being healthy on the inside will naturally show on the outside,” says Dr. Maureen Allem, founder and medical director of the Renewal Institute. She often explains to her patients that there are 4 pillars to antiageing, and they are all equally important.

1

The key to a younger you is a healthy Iifestyle.

The entire system works together in harmony, and no issue can be treated in isolation. A healthy lifestyle consists of a wellbalanced diet, lots of water, regular exercise, enough restorative, deep sleep and managing stress levels. These factors contribute to being healthy, and when the body is healthy, the skin will reflect it!

3

Addressing the condition of your skin.

2

The correct usage of injectables such as Botulinum Toxin, Dermal fillers and Threads.

These treatments address the formation of wrinkles, loss of volume and sagging skin. While wrinkles and volume loss can be reversed, prevention is better than cure. Botulinum Toxin, also referred to as Botox, show excellent results in the removal of lines and wrinkles, while fillers allow subtle contouring of the profile, and threads strengthen, lift and tighten the skin without cutting. Although these treatments have been around for over a decade, they’re still associated with a frozen expression. This is a misconception, which only appears in extreme cases, so it’s important to visit a doctor with lots of experience and who does these treatments regularly.

It should have a smooth, even texture, reduced pore size and a glowing complexion. The ideal treatments to get the best results are chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatments and skin needling - or ideally a combination. The aim is to boost and stimulate collagen, as the natural production of these decreases with age. The effect of these treatments are accumulative, so you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of regular treatments.

4

Ensure a good home care regime. Being disciplined at home with a routine in the morning and evening will show the results. Invest in products suitable for your skin type. Your doctor would know the condition of your skin and should be able to recommend the best products. Products with active ingredients that penetrate the deeper layers of the skin are best, and are typically found in medical skin care ranges.

TREATMENTS FROM TIP TO TOE at our favourite salons

H

ello Joburgers, we’ve created a self-care plan just for you. It’s something you’ve probably been putting off for a while - some well-deserved me time. We’ve selected our favorite treatments, and created the perfect pamper party!

SKIN SENSE DAY SPA

DR. GOBAC SKIN BODY APOTHECARY

Aromatherapy full body massage, R600 for 60 minutes

Perfectly Clear TX Facial, R499 for 60 minutes

Always remember that you come first, and what better way to kick start your pamper day than with a full body luxurious massage. What we love about this space is its grand location - in the heart of Sandton in a Bali inspired building. Choose between their stellar full body treatments, aromatherapy massage, hot stone full body massage, Ka Huna full body, pregnant full body or even a back, neck and shoulder massage. They also offer tanning, waxing and hair treatments, too!

34

DR. GOBAC launched its first specialized treatment clinic in Sandton, dedicated to offering advanced skincare treatments and bespoke therapies. We love this salon because it specializes in noninvasive treatments, and the therapist’s focus is on individual skin concerns and issues. During the facial, the therapist uses a Dermo Dynamic Analysis to ensure that you understand your skin, which is vital for further progress.

It’s truly an escape from your weekly woes, and we love that you can grab a delicious meal before or after your treatment. The Cooking Accountants restaurant is set inside Skin Sense Day Spa and has an array of light and gourmet menu offerings. From salmon and cream cheese omelettes, to superfood smoothies, healthy salads and delectable chicken prego rolls.

The main purpose of this specific facial is to give that clean feeling to the skin, calm inflammation, balance the oil and moisture production in the skin and help clear acne and breakouts. It also prevents formation of acne and breakouts. Your skin will feel refreshed and will have a natural glow. If your concerns are ageing, another firm favorite is the Supertransforming Anti-Aging Face Preparation, and the Biorestore Needle Free Face Preparation.

WE LIKE BIG BROWS AND

I

t’s the one thing you can get into shape without exercising. So, Hello Joburgers, if you still haven’t adjusted, tweaked, tweezed and trimmed your brows, then you’re officially not part of the 21st century. The thicker the better, the lusher the healthier, the more enhanced, the more superior! If you need a professional’s assistance when it comes to the fluffy arches, we have just the person… The brains behind the Brow Bar is owner and founder, Unaiza Moideen. With her beauty and business background and years of experience, Unaiza applies herself in every aspect of her business; from training staff and product development, to marketing and strategic alignment. We love fierce brows, and we love fierce females, so we booked ourselves a session with this business mogul at The Brow Bar at The Firs Rosebank. Best part? You don’t need to book an appointment! Just arrive and have your brows threaded. The salon is luxurious and plush, fitting with the first-class services. You’ll leave feeling like the queen that you are. The experience was enhancing and educational, and we left with a killer set of brows! It’s a work in progress, so after the brows are threaded, shaped and tinted, you’ll need to apply a growth serum at home, and return four to six weeks later for a follow up. Unaiza recommended a four-month process to grow and nurture the brows. We’re officially browaholics! Store Locations in Johannesburg

Cool fact: The concentrated bunches are hand-picked over a few days, rather than weeks, because of the relative uniformity of the soil. After caring for the vines and keeping the fruit healthy through ripening, the major challenge is protection against bird attacks and baboons off the mountains. The Flagstone team push the fruit to hang way past when other Pinotage in the area is picked. Best Pairing: Pinotage is versatile enough to pair across a huge spectrum of dishes, from oysters, to game and spicy Middle Eastern cuisine. It’s an absolute winner with a rare fillet of kudu and parsnip mash.

ou can’t buy happiness… but you can buy wine, and that’s basically the same thing, right Hello Joburgers? Some of us cook with it, most of us just drink it, but we all enjoy a delicious glass of vino!

How it’s made: Flagstones Writer’s Block Pinotage is crafted from a single vineyard block, high in the Waaihoek Mountains, which is an hour and a half ’s drive north of Cape Town. Everything about this site is special; the combination of soil, slope, climate, aspect and grape variety works brilliantly. It’s the highest vineyard in the area, planted in ancient, decomposed grantic soil, right up against the emphatic slopes of the Waaihoek. Colour: Enticing ruby red in colour. Bouquet: A wonderful balance of ripe, dark red fruit like mulberry and blackberry, with mocha chocolate and Indian spice, underpinned by a bewitching hint of bramble and mint. Palate: Surprisingly rich and balanced, and gives the impression of being elegant and powerful at the same time. Flavours of ripe strawberry, cherry and darker blackberry are wrapped up in soft, comforting oak hints and a caress of vanilla and dark chocolate. Really long and luscious.

The award-winning musical charts the ragsto-riches rise of the First Lady of Argentina, who won the love of her countrymen after marrying military leader-turned-president Juan Peron. It’s set in Buenos Aires between 1934 and 1952, and follows Eva Duarte Peron on her journey from humble beginnings as a fatherless child, to the most powerful woman in Latin America — and, eventually, to a saint-like figure after her death at age 33.

A

uctioneering as a profession has been around for over two thousand years, and it’s still one of the most exciting, interesting, efficient and profitable ways to buy or sell anything. However, there’s still stigma attached to auction rooms; it’s stuffy and auctions are ‘for older people’, if you sneeze you’ve bought something, and you have to be filthy rich to participate!

experience. ‘We want people to realize that auctions are addictive! Selling through an auction house opens your product up to many buyers, who could bid furiously against one another to win. Buying at auction is exhilarating – the excitement in the room is

electric, and you stand a chance of owning oneoff pieces that could turn into heirlooms - for a fraction of what you would pay in main stream shops. Every auction is different. We make sure to keep things exciting and we keep our clients coming back.” The last quarter of the year is jam packed with Antique and Decorative auctions – apart from the regular end-of-month auctions (September, October and December), there are two specialized Boer War Auctions scheduled for mid-September and October. There’s also an offsite auction of the entire contents of an antique shop in White River during mid-November. ‘Apart from the auctions, we also assist with valuations, and specialize in offsite auctions where we assist with a front door to back door selling strategy. We’ve had tremendous successes in these and already have exciting auctions lined up for 2018!’ 5 www.oldjwauctioneers.com 1 011 836 1650 8 info@oldjwauctioneers.com f @oldjwauctioneers

entertainment BE YOUR OWN DJ Music to tune you on!

S

ummer is on the way, and of course, that means you need a great soundtrack to go with it! Luckily, we’ve found a few awesome albums to get you started…

THE COSMIC STRANGE

This four-piece outfit from Jozi has finally released their debut EP! Apparently, they intended to release it earlier, but a hard-drive crash forced the band to start from scratch. We’re so happy it’s finally here, and if you love the sounds of indie rock mixed with a bit of neo-psychedelia, then enlighten your ears to a few of their tracks. We dig the heavy drums and guitar sounds that dominate the album, making an energetic, summer sound that you can’t help jiving to. We can totally picture ourselves blasting ‘Sunsnare’ while on an epic, summer road-trip. 5 www.thecosmicstrange.co.za

A NOISE IN THE VOID This album starts with a powerful instrumental that sucks you right in. The overall album has a slightly different sound to what we expect from this mega-star. It’s strong but bubbly, reflective, happy with a little bit of an 80’s techno vibe, but also sad, and strong… it’s fearless. Our personal favourite is ‘Rhythm of the Night’ – it’s evocative and the powerful lyrics almost bought us to tears. We’re also big fans of ‘We Could Be Divine’, in which Kahn collaborated with local songstress Karen Zoid. If you’re looking for an inspirational, uplifting album, this is it.

A little international… CIGARETTES AFTER SEX

YOUR PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE If you’re into the Pharrell and Kanye West kind of sound, that’s exactly what you get from this muchanticipated album. ‘Your Princess is in another Castle’ stays true to his own style as an artist, and this album is a must-have if you’re into Indie and alternative music. Looking for a get up and go song? Our favourite track, ‘How Come You Are Not’ is your best bet.

Listening to the debut album Cigarettes After Sex, by the artists of the same name (who hail from El Paso, Texas), is like slipping into a soothing bowl of soup. It’s warm and nourishing. Lead singer, Greg Gonzalez has one of those voices that you’ll love when you just need to chill out. It’s a new age, alternative sound that carries a weirdly comforting melancholic feel. An ambient ode to love, the album boasts beautiful storytelling, as every song is a poetic telling of a different experience in love. Cigarettes After Sex can be faulted in its monotonous and unoriginal sound from song to song. There’s very little progression in melody, however it’s deeply enjoyable regardless. ‘Sweet’ is one of the best songs in the album, and is maybe it’s only change of pace. The song carries an adorable story of how a man sees his lover.

nce the sun goes down, the colourful lights come on and jeepers, is Jozi a sight to see at night. The City of Gold is a hustling, bustling hive of activity, and if you want to place yourself in the middle of it, there’s only one place to stay – The Reef Hotel in Marshalltown.

Found in the financial district, the four-star Reef Hotel is close to major business centers and is only five minutes from City Hall and Johannesburg Park Station. This exceptionally modern hotel boasts not only 120 en-suite rooms, a restaurant, bar and rooftop venue, but it also serves up some of the most magnificent views of the city. Business-folk travelling to or from Johannesburg favour the Reef because of its refreshing location, knowledgeable and friendly staff and top-notch conference facilities. There are three separate conference rooms that are completely customizable to accommodate your every need, and they can accommodate 70 to 220 guests respectively, depending on your chosen layout. There are secretarial services available on request, as well as a projector and screen, whiteboard, flipchart, notepads and pens, multiple lighting configurations, water and refreshments and a new, state of the art built in audio visual equipment. There’s nothing that the team at The Reef can’t handle.

We recommend you extend your stay if you can, because the rooms are comfortable, spacious and give you an interesting glimpse into life in the city. Each room has a bath and shower, air

conditioning and heating, a flat screen TV with a DSTV bouquet, tea and coffee facilities and free wireless internet. What we love the most is that the entire hotel is energy friendly! This means the facilities in your room only work when your key is in place, and all the lights along the corridors are operated by motion sensors.

The walls are covered in stupendous local art and interesting facts about Joburg and its gold-mining history. Now if you’re spending the night, then we highly recommend you pop down to the ground floor and chow down at the Homestead Restaurant. With canteen like vibes, this place dishes up some superbly fresh, home-style food. We’re were particularly taken by the Bowl’d Food option – pick your base; pap, rice, potato, mash, spicy rice or pasta. Then add a hearty helping of veg, a grill – think a quarter chicken, flame-grilled chuck or grilled linefish – or add a tasty stew. Then choose a sauce, salad and cool drink, and you’re good to go just fifteen minutes later! If you’re after a true Jozi city experience, we have no doubt that you’ll find it at the incredible Reef Hotel. 58 Anderson Street, Marshalltown, Johannesburg 5 www.reefhotel.co.za 1 011 689 1000 8 reservations@reefhotel.co.za f @reefhotels | t @Reef_Hotels @reef_hotel_jozi

esut Barazany once said “your future depends on your dreams. So, go to sleep!” We love a good snooze, but how much is enough? Sleep expert and Founder of the Hall Collection, Debbie Reinders Hall gives us some useful advice on how to perfect our sleeping habits…

We adore the range that’s available from the Hall Collection because it brings luxurious comfort and relaxation back to the bedroom. They offer the finest products made only from natural materials, and all their mattresses and linens are European Eco-labelled, custom-made and handcrafted to last a lifetime! Lucky for us, Debbie knows her stuff… How many hours? We all love a lie-in, but research shows too much sleep can lead to cognitive impairment, depression, increased inflammation and pain, as well as impaired fertility and it increases your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. This must be why the early bird gets the worm! How to get a good night’s sleep… • Find your balance: We don’t all need 8 hours of sleep a night. Work out the level you need. • •

Keep a routine: Going to bed at the same time each night will program your body for sleep.

Invest in a good bed: A comfy bed will provide deep, reviving sleep.

Give yourself space: Buy the biggest bed your room can accommodate, so you can luxuriate in an undisturbed nights' rest.

Be active and engaged: Physical and mental exercise will help you sleep better.

Ease down: Too much stimulation before bed can stop you sleeping. A relaxed body and mind will prepare you for sleep. Find a bedtime routine that helps you to unwind easily.

is a National Monument in the heart of suburban Saxonwold and Parkwood – we are talking about Villa d’ Este a designated Heritage Site - which until recently was home to the Camelot retro baroque Day Spa. Architectural History: Built in 1923 to the design of South African architect Gordon Leith, Villa d’ Este was constructed out of a flat-roofed rectangular block from which, a large semi-circle was cut out to form the front facade of this magnificent building. In 1957 ownership passed to architect David Morrison who changed the character radically by seamlessly integrating the classical Italian cherub statues into the garden, fresh water pool and fountains. Roofscape: Morrison’s final coup de’ grace was the design of the first floor living quarters which flow out onto a roof-scape of patios, glass conservatory and bird’s eye view of the garden vista. 7Lucy minutes with Kruger

A female force, a musician and a songwriter. Since the release of her debut album ‘Cut those Strings’ in 2013, Lucy has toured extensively locally and internationally. We sat down to catch up with our local gal!

You’ve become one of South Africa’s most talked about performers. How does that make you feel? That’s a very lovely thing to hear, and not something of which I’m aware! In fact, it makes me a little nervous. I’m very grateful if people are able to connect to the live show – it’s one of the places in the world that I’m least confused - and feel most at home. What’s in store for the rest of 2017?
Medicine Boy (my other band) are in studio, recording our second full length album now which is exciting. We’ll be doing a spring tour around the country, where we’ll be experimenting with old and new material. The tour ends with a set at Oppikoppi, and the year ends with a set at the beautiful Endless Daze Festival, which takes place on the West Coast. Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys will be playing at Rocking the Daisies, as well as a few more shows before the year ends. Favourite meal to cook at home? I’m a humble cook - which is just a nice way of saying that I’m not a very good cook. I’m happy with a simple vegetarian stir-fry

or curry. In fact, any version of chickpea works for me. I’m quite happy to spoon hummus straight from the bowl! Where will we find you on weekends? In my books or at a show. Or hanging out with my brother’s golden retriever. What can you not live without? The colour blue. The kick from coffee. Beach House. Winter months. Slow mornings. Chicken or Tofu? Always tofu. Activewear or boho chic? Never activewear. I am active in my normal wear. What three items will we always find in your handbag? I lose everything. All the time. The three things that should always be in my bag are sunblock, sunglasses and my forever wandering keys. 5 www.lucykruger.com f @LucyKrugerOfficial t @lucy_kruger @lucy_kruger
