We started with the tapas: the twice-cooked beef ribs will definitely get your mouth watering, while the beef and pickled shiitake potstickers are something you’ll remember

et’s get the first thing out the way: Roast Republic’s coffee is great. It’s rich and full, and the flavour seems to touch every corner of your mouth. The food is also first class. It’s designed to be a ‘grab and go’ outlet to service corporate workers in need of a bite, and it does a great job of providing variety and freshness. On the menu are the usual café fare, from rolls to bowls. I had a peri-peri chicken panini and was blown away by its tongue-tingling zing, perfectly balanced by creamy feta and crisp cucumber.

cover feature he lion is the second largest living cat after the tiger. Some grow to exceed 250kg. A little over a century ago, about a million lions roamed the African planes. Today there are fewer than 20 000 in Africa.
For this reason and many more, the Lion and Safari Park in the Magaliesburg Mountains is an important piece of the country’s educational heritage and tourism landscape. Apart from the new activities available, the Lion & Safari Park is involved in research projects as part of its conversation efforts and aims to become a research hub for the Magaliesburg and Cradle of Humankind area. The park works closely with an organisation called Kainav Conservation. Celebrating 50 years of operation, the Lion & Safari Park re-opened in June with an improved version of the tourist attraction and now offers 600 hectares of wilderness for various animals and species. The new park is significantly bigger, offers authentic safari encounters and an unforgettable experience.

Speaking of cool cats, you’ll notice that the lesser spotted but definitely well heard Goliath and Goliath dropped in to visit the Lion & Safari Park. Jason, Donovan and Nic aka Goliath & Goliath form part of one of South Africa’s premier comedy trios. They recently opened the Roast Café and The Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch, so it’s a rare Hello Joburg • September 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
sight to see them all together enjoying a little down time. Sadly they’re not a regular act at The Lion & Safari Park (although there’s an idea) but their comedy club is alive and well (and heaving to capacity) – so get over there! “Our mission is to provide an opportunity for guests, both local and international to learn more about these wonderful animals. Our staff are ready to answer questions and our hope is that guests leave knowing more about these magnificent beasts than when they arrived,” said Andre Le Cock, spokesperson for the park. One of the biggest attractions is the guided predator tour, which you can also do at night with a feeding experience included. Led by fully qualified, trained and experienced guides, the hour and 15 minute tour will show one of South Africa’s most famous predators in their natural environment. It’s a great day tour, but the experience really comes alive after dark, with the sounds and hazy sights of the park and of course, the opportunity to see a feeding. On the topic of feeding, guests certainly won’t go hungry with two fantastic new restaurants – The Wetlands Bar and Restaurant and the Bull ‘n’ Buck Grill. In its (almost) 50 year history, the Lion & Safari Park has become one of Gauteng’ top tourist attractions. The new Lion and Safari Park has spared no expense in creating a world class tourist attraction in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind and looks forward to building on this success in the years to come. plants that were mentioned in the writer’s great works are cultivated in a beautiful and serene setting. Apparently ole’ Ted has a bit of a green finger and wanted to showcase his own horticultural talent alongside a little Elizabethan grandeur that is found in England. Hence the new Ted Baker store in Sandton City. No two items are the same in this oneof-a-kind store. Step through the ornate Elizabethan frame, onto the antique oak floor with a black and white chequered in-lay and into a fairytale. Famous Shakespearean
symbols and artefacts peek out from behind an abundance of lush green plants while books and papers litter the walls and cash desk. Heavy velvet fabrics and drapes fall from the ceiling, softening the interior while neon quotes on the walls mark the menswear and womenswear shopping areas. dining out La Vie en Rose Bigger and better
We’ve found the cure for your winter woes and as the weather warms, it becomes even more important to indulge in the outdoors. Fortunately La Vie en Rose has a beautiful lavish garden area in which to wine and dine. It’s also ideal for weddings, high teas, birthdays, bride’s kitchen teas or a simple romantic dinner under a canopy of stars, and it’s open from Monday to Sunday. It’s utter torment to decide what to order
on the extensive menu but let’s whet your appetite. The breakfast menu includes the famous crunchy homemade muesli, served with thick Greek yoghurt & appetizing fresh fruit, drizzled with honey. Then there’s the breakfast Royale with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, crème fraiche, chives & avo. Mouth watering yet? Well lunch will surely get your taste buds tingling with a delicious selection of salads, sandwiches and wraps. We love the famous design-your-own-salad phenomenon.
We’re talking succulent chicken breast, gardenfresh broccoli, oven-roasted butternut, couscous, Danish feta… use your imagination!
Before you start to worry, the menu is still the same as the previous location, so the 240g of succulent fillet medallions is still on offer and the pink Norwegian salmon with a parmesan lime crust is as delectable as ever! If you haven’t tried their creamy basil pesto pappardelle pasta, you really don’t know what you’re missing. The honey-soy-ginger marinated duck breast is also a must-order. The reality is the food alone is reason enough to visit this momentous landmark, and because it is so beautifully plated, it’s an Instagrammers dream come true. Don’t forget to save room for dessert! The puddings are out of this world mouthgasmic. Think deep-fried Oreo cookies, Toblerone chocolate wrapped phyllo bundles of joy amd homemade heavenly halva ice cream, nom nom nom! 5 Star flavour
Cadbury just keeps dishing out deliciousness, and their latest treat, the Cadbury 5Star, definitely gets a 5 star rating from us at Hello Joburg. It’s almost like a Tempo and a Mars Bar decided to combine their taste powers and create the 5Star, a parcel of chewy caramel wrapped around a soft chocolate cream centre mixed with crunchy biscuit bits. 5Star has a larger than life flavour, which fits in perfectly with the new advert released by Cadbury. It depicts a young graduate, in the middle of her valedictory speech when suddenly she’s interrupted by her own mouth, which is craving an indulgent chocolatey experience. So if you mouth starts to get out of hand, just shut it up with a delish Cadbury 5Star! H 5 www.cadbury.co.za

The dish on J’Something
H
e may be the smooth-moving, sweet-crooning lead singer of MiCasa, but Joao da Fonseca, AKA J’Something has more than a few hidden talents, and most of them reside in the kitchen. Despite insisting that he’s no chef, but rather ‘a guy that really loves food and cooking,’ J’Something has an undeniable passion for food that he claims stems from his parents. “When you’re Portuguese, you grow up in an environment where not falling in love with food is impossible.” However, it’s his fans that supposedly inspired his cooking show, which was aptly titled ‘Something’s Cooking’. “If it wasn’t for them constantly asking for it I wouldn’t have done it. It was also a way of letting my fans into a part of my life no one had previous access to,” he revealed. He also spilled the beans on his favourite ingredients to work with - olive oil, chilli, garlic, cumin and of course chorizo, and his favourite eat-out spot – Pablo Eggs Go Bar in Melville. “The best brekkie spot!” When he’s not creating catchy tunes or cooking up a storm, he’s collaborating with a number of brands and organisations involved with food.
He’s also teamed up with Castle Milk Stout in order to feed the Kwaito revolution, because creating new musical masterpiece can be hard – and hungry work. Castle Milk Stout Unplugged is a monthly feature on Kaya FM where Castle Milk Stout pairs musicians with a dish created and cooked by J’Something. He recently whipped up a serving of Stout Gravy Sausage and Garlic Mash for Soweto born Mandla Mofokeng, AKA Spikiri. It’s so easy that even you can whip it together at home. H

Recipe Spring clean
your routine
Y
ou spruce up your house when the seasons change, so why not do the same with your workout?
Create a schedule If you haven’t worked out much this winter, don’t try and jam 5 months’ worth of training into 2 weeks. You’re not a super hero! You’ll only get frustrated and give up on your workout program. Create an 8 week schedule that develops over time - you’ll have plenty of time before December break to show off that newly trimmed body of yours. Team up You’re more likely to stick to your plan if you’ve got a partner in crime. Choose a work out buddy that has similar body goals and who will push you. Then challenge each other every week. Get outdoors Break up your routine with some outdoor activities. One of my favorites is wall climbing/rock climbing. It’s so much fun, you won’t even realize that you’re working out. Protect your skin More time outdoors means more time in the sunshine, so remember to rub waterproof sunscreen with a SPF 15 or more, over all the exposed areas of your body. Don’t forget those easy-to-miss areas. Step off the scale Muscle weighs more than fat, so although you may look toned, there’s a chance you might not be shedding weight at the rate you’d expect. To keep an accurate track of your progress, use a measuring tape once every two weeks to see true results. Use those ‘likes’ to your advantage Get vocal about your routine and fitness goals and connect with other ‘social friends’ looking to get motivated this spring via social media. Post updates on your progress, provide links to your favorite fitness articles and products, and cheer on others (scratch their back and they’ll scratch yours). Do a race Add a few goals to your routine - it helps push you harder and you feel like you’ve accomplished something. Look at doing a road race in your area, there are a few every weekend. A 5km distance is perfect for beginners and it’s a great way to grow your fitness circle. Time for a reward! Don’t forget to take care of your hard-worked body! A sports massage is an ideal pamper session and a great way to give yourself the ‘pat on the back’ you deserve. Only if you’ve reached those goals though… H Words Brett R Palframan

S
o you’ve dedicated yourself to getting fit, taking time to de-stress and eating healthy, but did you know that many ‘healthy’ options have little evils lurking in them? Gert Coetzee, founder of The Diet Everyone Talks About, tells us what foods to avoid and gives us a scrummy, healthy recipe.
Health foods: Take foods like health rusks for example. These may contain ingredients that are good for the colon but they are definitely not a good choice in crafting a leaner, cleaner you. Fruit juice: Yes, it’s made of fruit and fruit is healthy, right? Wrong! Fruit juice (even 100% real juice) has all the fibre taken out of it so your body is just getting liquid sugar. Low fat products: Society has been brainwashed with the ‘low fat mantra’. Many of these products may be lower in fat, but they’re actually pumped full of sugar to make them taste good. Low carb snacks: Popping into the store and grabbing a low carb snack or readymade meal is too easy. Many of these are highly processed and offer little to no real nutrients. Rather make your own snacks at home with wholesome foods. H Like these amazing Peanut Butter Cookies: This recipe makes 40 portions with only 0.7g of carbs per cookie! Ingredients:
Method:
125ml Crunchy peanut butter 250ml Cream 125ml Chopped pecan/walnut/ macadamia nuts 10ml Vanilla 6-8ml Nice-n-Sweet (aspartame free sweetener made by The Diet Everyone Talks About) 50ml Soya flour 5ml Baking powder Optional: Coconut or cherries
1 Preheat oven to 180°C. 2 Grease a baking tray. 3 Mix all ingredients together well. 4 Drop teaspoonful of mixture on a baking tray and bake for ± 10 minutes until done. 3 016 362 4890 5 www.the-diet.co.za T @dietsa

beauty & wellness t may be 2016 but let’s be earnest Hello Joburgers, we’re all slightly indolent, we’re customarily overstressed, over-worked and undervalued but we’re also extremely smart. This is where Salud Food steps in.

This revolutionary brand is quite genius if you ask us, because you’ll never have to think like Jamie Oliver again. Salud Food not only allows us to reach our nutrition nirvana but it also aids us in making healthy choices. However, what our 21st century bodies are craving is super foods, libido lifting, health giving and energy enhancing foods that nourish our minds and our bodies. What is Salud? Salud means ‘health’ in Spanish and is the solution to unhealthy convenient takeaways. using only natural ingredients. Low in sugar and salt but big on taste, Salud meals are the kind of wholesome food you would make in your own kitchen; the kind of food you’ll always be happy to give your family.” How does it work? First you’ll have to decide what kind of food you love and what your budget is. Soups, salads, low carb or if you love it all, they have it all! Visit their website, www.salud.co.za select your meal, your quantity, pop in your location and they’ll deliver. It is as easy as guilt-free pie! The verdict: It is really quite simple Hello Joburgers, tried and tested, we absolutely love this product. The meals are delicious and you’re eating food that is made with the finest ingredients and actually has sustenance. All the meals are labeled with ‘low carb’ or ‘balanced’ and are targeted to suit your lifestyle choice and all the allergens are labeled too. Each meal serves one so if you and your bestie have different tastes or perhaps she is a vegetarian and you don’t want to suffer without protein, no problem! She can order the fragrant vegetable tagine with Moroccan inspired vegetables with apricots, chickpeas and almonds served on a bed of fluffy couscous with preserved lemon and coriander, while you chow down on the Mediterranean chicken with succulent chicken breasts, green bean and aubergine simmer, oregano
infused cauli-rice and juicy vine-roasted baby tomatoes. It’s a win-win! They also deliver right to your front door. So you select a meal online, register and voila! Your ready-made meal arrives and all you have to do is heat it up in the microwave and more importantly, dig in and relish in the flavour! The portions are generous and all the nutritional information is supplied as well as heating instructions. They do all the thinking for you and hey, if you want to save it for a rainy day, pop it in the freezer because it will last up to one month. P.S We believe small white lies are always allowed, so we recommend impressing your friends with your new ‘culinary skills’ and ordering a bunch of Salud meals for when they decide to come over. They’ll be easily swayed by your newfangled ‘cooking’ talents. H 0 info@salud.co.za 3 010 003 7771 5 www.salud.co.za

nightlife An expo for all the senses
This year, Sexpo celebrates its 10th year running, and proves to be the best so far
With 62 000 pairs of feet through the doors last year, organisers expect close on 90 000 this year. Sean Newman of SEXPO says “All we can do is thank the public who have made the show what it is today. They have spoken in numbers and turned what was deemed as a one hit wonder into an annual pilgrimage, something that everyone involved in the show counts their blessings for but also gives us the drive to keep innovating and educating in order to keep the dream alive.”

Having done this for a decade now, the guys behind the show have certainly learned a thing or two. “I think the biggest lessons learnt are that you cannot put a demographic or age specific limit on the show. Sexpo has got to be one of the most all-encompassing shows in the country, with everyone coming to see what the fuss is about. It’s great to see that the idea of exploring sexually and learning has been embraced and that our audiences have grown year on year since inception. This can only be put down to the idea that we aim to create a safe, non-judgmental and most importantly, educational environment for couples and individuals to grow while remaining fun, light hearted and sensual.” Of course there will always be naysayers but event enthusiasts are adamant that the show is a forum that allows open and candid communication about a topic that is often difficult to discuss in public. “Communication and experience are essential to sexual growth. People see Sexpo as a guide for all things adult education related.” H Sexpo will be taking over the Johannebsurg Expo Centre from 27 - 30 October. Tickets cost R100 – R250. 5 www.sexpo.co.za

SAADA takes you through time
H
Age ain’t nothin’ but a number
ave you ever wanted to have a cup of tea with Queen Victoria, or do the Lindy Hop in Art Deco New York? Well, heading to the South African Antique, Art and Design Association (SAADA) Expo is the closest you’re ever going to get. Working with the theme of ‘Time Travel’, the SAADA Expo aims to exceed all previous years. Prepare to be transported through a number of fantastic decades, thanks to the gorgeous designs and antiques that will be on display.
A number of exhibitors will be attending this year’s expo, which promises to be bigger, better ad sexier than ever before. Thin antique silver jewellery, vintage clothing, gorgeous antique clocks, amazing art and even European 18th and 19th century furniture. If you thought that virtual reality was invented today, your mind is about to be blown. Gaze through a late 19th Century stereo viewer in amazement – and see yesteryear in 3D! From Bancroft Antiques, this is just one of thousands of items that will be on show at this year’s SAADA Expo. In today’s world, we want everything and we want it now, so it’s easy to think that design simply relates to the ‘here and now’. As Paul Mrkusic, SAADA CEO says that most of the time we give it one quick glance before moving on to look at, tweet and share the next brilliant thing that crosses our path or catches our eye. “It’s easy to forget that everything that surrounds us is not so fashion-forward as to have no past, but that each and every edgy innovation we see and experience has had an enormous amount of time and thought and
intellectual exploration and experimentation put into it,” Mrkusic continues. What sets the SAADA Expo apart is that, quite simply, there is nothing else like it. The annual expos are a boutique-style celebration of the incredible history of design – past, present and future – and not only a contemporary moment thereof. H 5 www.saada.co.za @saada_antiques

t’s finally here… the Jozi Film Festival will bring all the glitz and glamour of the local and international film industry to the moviemad public. The fifth annual Jozi Film Festival will showcase a number of films from established and up and coming filmmakers that explore a broad range of topics that affect our communities. The Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching local culture, supporting the film community in Joburg and expanding their reach when it comes to audiences. The festival takes place over three days and spans a number of venues, including The Bioscope Independent Theatre in Braamfontein. The opening night film of 2016 will be the award-winning courtroom drama Shepherds and Butchers, which will officially open the festival on 15 September at Rosebank’s Cinema Nouveau. The film stars Steve Coogan and Andrea Riseborough from Birdman and is directed by local Oliver Schmitz.

The film puts the death penalty on trial. Based Hello Joburg • September 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
on true events and set in 1987, when South Africa still had the death penalty in place, the film tells the story of a young white prison guard who has a mental break after watching multiple executions and kills seven black men in cold blood. His lawyer, played by Coogan, is a passionate opponent of the death penalty, but doubts whether he can win his case. As the trial progresses, Weber questions legally sanctioned murder in what should be an open and shut case. The film highlights how capital punishment was just another way for the apartheid government to discriminate against the black population, and how an eye for an eye leads to the whole world being blind. Members of the dedicated filmmaking team, as well as the cast, will travel to Joburg in order to introduce the film. What is even more interesting is that the film is still relevant now, especially in a country like South Africa, where we are faced with extreme levels of violence every day, where people are calling for the reinstatement of the death penalty and where the fallout of legally sanctioned violence is still felt. Shepherds and Butchers is just one of the films that will grip your attention during the Jozi Film Festival, which is set to take place from 15 to 18 September at venues like Reagile
Cinema in Katlehong, Eyethu Lifestyle Centre in Soweto and the Goethe Institut on Jan Smuts Avenue. Hello Joburgers, this is one of the most anticipated events of the year and it’s definitely not to be missed. t’s a countryside hotel in one of the freshest areas in South Africa. Walkersons hotel in Dullstroom exudes beauty and encompasses the sweeter side of life. You’re guaranteed an unforgettable stay.
A walk through Walkersons
The Area The earthy nature of the Mpumalanga province is captivating. Rolling mountainous hills, evergreen trees and mystical wonders, there is something truly magical about this location. As rivers slice through the foothills, the views become breath taking and this area of spell bounding beauty is even more enchanting in winter. The icy mornings will not present you with any barriers because it’s the kind of cold that is mesmerising … oh, and nothing a warm cuppa hot chocolate can’t fix. Only two hours outside of Joburg, there is absolutely no excuse not to visit delightful Dullstroom!

The Hotel Initially, as you enter the gates of the prestigious Walkersons hotel, you are welcomed not only by the ever-friendly smiling faces, but also the cheerful views. The kicker comes just after you enter the gates, with views that last even longer and trees that grow incredibly tall. This blossoming location gives way to a very special hotel, Walkersons, where Picture a Scottish country manor with a magic lives. luxurious feel, a haven of peace, a somewhat sanctuary, perhaps broken only by the splashes Once you exit your car, the valleys silence of trout fish and buzz of humming birds. This is impressive and absolute privacy and memorable destination offers exceptional exclusivity are ensured. The hotel is situated service and beautiful accommodation. Upon on an eight hundred hectare estate and is only our visit, we were treated to a quaint selfcatering cottage, which opened up onto one of 16.9 km from the town of Dullstroom. the many trout dams. We must admit, the first thing we did was hurdle and gingerly land on the gargantuan, royal king size bed.
The most comfortable bed possible, tick, fluffy and soft, tick, overwhelmingly forgiving pillows, tick. Once you force yourself off the bed you can hire mountain bikes and explore the area, or why not attempt a lesson in fly-fishing? We would also recommend a peaceful picnic at the front of the river. The hotel packs a picnic basket to your liking, filled with all their delicious treats. All you need to do is open your bottle of wine and viola! You’re living the high life. The Spa Here it becomes clear that Walkersons is countryside indulgence personified. The Walkersons Amani Spa is the crème de la crème. It is a well-oiled machine, boasting excellent service, attentive masseuses and beautiful lavish products on offer. We would recommend a Babor facial followed by a one-hour full body massage. We had a Classic Swedish massage where our only complaint was that it wasn’t long enough. The massage was therapeutic and relieved all the tension associated with life back in Joburg. We opted for 9am slot and it was the most wonderful way to start the day, followed by velvety eggs benedict and a strong cup of coffee... need we say more? For maximum relaxation, which we all deserve, we highly advise booking a massage - it’s worth every cent! H 5 www.walkersons.co.za 3 082 807 7505 T @walkersons

C
raig Newman, CEO of the Johannesburg Expo Centre, has spent the better part of his life giving others the chance to showcase their passion. Few know the South African exhibition and eventing industry quite like Craig, who has occupied leadership roles at some of South Africa’s top MICE (meetings, incentives, conference and events) industry companies.
Words Carly Ritz
According to this guru, what makes a good event? You cannot compromise on the location. Is the venue easily accessible to international visitors? Is there enough parking, is there accommodation nearby for those spending the night and more importantly, will the venue highlight the best of your event? How well have you considered the consumer take-outs? What will people get for attending? This is where Craig and his team get it right as event goers arrive in their droves for the added value. International conferences hosted alongside trade-shows as well as seminars and workshops give guests the chance to gather industry insights, network and exchange ideas. The job has its challenges. Events like this are not achieved overnight. The eventing
industry is fast becoming a strong economic contributor locally, so attention to detail is paramount. Craig says a big challenge is that international businesses and visitors struggle to get VISAs, which affects the local exhibitions and events industry. “We need to make it easier for them to operate in our country. We need to collaborate and work together with government in order to allow international exhibitors and visitors to enter the country without difficulty.” Craig says. If you’re not already exhibiting at the JEC, Craig says consider the following. “There are so many facilities here just waiting to be used and we have space in abundance. You really can go to town with an event here,” hints Craig. “You want to have an event that takes advantage of the Expo Centre’s versatility as a venue.” And with Craig and his team on site, you can’t go wrong! H 5 www.expocentre.co.za 3 011 494 1920 @johannesburgexpocentre Don’t miss… Electra Mining is the biggest mining, industrial, electrical and power trade show in Southern Africa and it’s happening from 12-16 September. This is one of Hello Joburg’s personal favourites – Sexpo is celebrating its 10th birthday at the Expo Centre from 27-30 October. Ultra South Africa is back on 25 February 2017.

The JEC is only 15 minutes from a wide variety of three-, four- and five star hotels for those out of town visitors. Oh-so accessible. yertal is the largest offsite CCTV monitoring company in South Africa and believes that affordable residential security is a right, not a privilege. These days, we’re overloaded by ‘smart’. Smart phones, smart televisions and even smart fridges. It only makes sense that someone put all that ‘smart’ technology to better use. That’s exactly what Myertal have done with their cost-effective smart CCTV surveillance. Here’s how it works: your newly fitted, or existing CCTV cameras that surround your home record activity along the perimeter of your property and at all the entrances. A self-
learning software analyses every video frame from every camera, searching for any unusual activity patterns. “This is what makes our security solution so proactive, and unlike any other security product or service available in South Africa today,” says Myertal CEO, Warren Myers. If there’s any abnormal activity detected, a 5-15 second video clip will instantly pop up in the offsite Myertal control room. The threat is assessed and either escalated or dismissed. The system is so sensitive and so precise that even at a retail shopping centre with 24/7 surveillance of thousands of people, it’s still able to detect suspicious behaviour.
view of your property and Warren’s teams are able to act before criminals have accessed your property and any crime has taken place. It works 24/7, in real time, with the smart technology ensuring it doesn’t miss a thing. Myertal’s offsite CCTV monitored surveillance security solution can also be customised to suit your needs. You can incorporate the smart detection technology into your existing CCTV systems or rent cameras directly from Myertal, have cameras pointed at high risk areas of your property and have your home monitored 24 hours a day or purely after-hours.
Warren states that other security measures, like guards or beams, only cover portions of your property and have to be triggered in order to alert your security company.
There is absolutely no risk to your family’s personal privacy, as the cameras are only pointed at the property perimeter and access points, leaving your family to feel safe, secure and happy. H
The system gives a continuous bird’s eye

The south african flag
T
he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

You love Joburg because… Joburg is a very fast-paced city and filled with positive energy. It also has a kaleidoscope of unique personalities. What have you learnt about yourself during your career? I believe that I am very patient and understanding. I’ve also realised that I’m a quick-thinker, a great negotiator and someone who tries to smile and laugh as much as possible. What’s new and exciting about your latest projects? Diageo has brought several exciting brands into South Africa over the past year: Cîroc Vodka has released Cîroc Pineapple, Singleton Scotch whisky has also introduced Singleton Tailfire, Cardhu 12-year-old Scotch whisky is also new to the SA market and Ron Zacapa 23-year-old is a new luxury rum. What is the most important thing you have learnt through your work at Diageo? Always plan properly and in advance, communicate clearly to

Passion is the best recipe for success and, last but not least, never, never be late! If you had to choose three people to have dinner with dead or alive, who would they be? Nelson Mandela, my mother and my father. Who is your biggest inspiration? Definitely my father. Who is your celeb crush? Gabrielle Union.
