People of Joburg!

Daniella Emanuel - you just need to know where to find them, and I love finding them!

What is your favourite fashion find in the city? Local designers - they can custom tailor garments to you.You won’t find them on the mall floor and who wants to wear the same piece as someone else?

Who has inspired your love of fashion? Coco Chanel and my grandmother. My gran taught me how to always look put together and dress like a lady. Her taste in clothing and accessories was always impeccable. I still wear her old jewelry today because it still looks great paired with contemporary clothing.

What makes Joburg shine for you? The city is peppered with hidden gems when it comes to local design and independent stores

What are you crushing on at the moment? Capes - in any print you can find. The way they are structured makes them so classy and versatile.

#OOTD What did you wear today? A crisp white shirt with a black leather pencil skirt - they’re both wardrobe essentials. Black and white always looks great together, especially with the contrast of finishes. It’s all about the accessories.

JOBURG

Catherine Grenfell 5fm DJ

Bailey Schneider and DJ Sox I grew up in Joburg, but my fiancé was born in Greece and has lived in Cape Town from the age of 5. I absolutely adore showing him around Joburg whenever we visit my family, friends or if we have business up in Jozi. 8:15am It’s always great to get a work out done and love visiting Sweat 1000 to set the day right.

www.sweat1000.com

10:00am Strolling around markets is one of our favourite things to do, and love that the Fourways Farmer’s Market is close by. It’s fantastic to meet up with family and friends there because they always have the best food and we ensure we arrive hungry. www.ffmarket.co.za 13:00pm We always like to do some shopping when we are in Joburg to see the different items on offer. Sandton City or Melrose Arch are our choices and we love walking through the centre or the streets, respectively. We have an obsession with sunglasses, so we can never pass up visiting a Sunglass Hut. www.sunglasshut.com/za 16:00pm As I said, I love showing Sox around and if it’s not a drive along Nelson Mandela Bridge and seeing the views, then it’s a trip to the Lion Park. Don’t forget to hand feed the giraffe – what an experience! www.lion-park.com 20:00pm We really enjoy seeing friends and family for dinner – it’s always an excellent opportunity to catch up. We have so many favourite restaurants and try to eat somewhere different each time, but our absolute favourites are: Café del Sol (we had our first date there), Licorish at Nicol Way, Hudsons in Parkhurst and Mon Petit Throbb in Fourways. www.monpetitthrobb.co.za

Hello Joburg s mend recom

A classic jewel in the heart of Sandton

THE PROTEA HOTEL

S

ituated on Maude Street – known as the Wall Street of Africa – the hotel is right in the heart of the city. It is ideally located just three minutes away from the Sandton Gautrain Station which connects guests to OR Tambo International Airport in just 15 minutes. The Balalaika is also just 300m from Sandton City Shopping Centre, the Sandton Convention Centre and Nelson Mandela Square, all of which can be accessed by the hotel’s free shuttle service. Despite it being located in the midst of Johannesburg’s business Mecca, The Balalaika offers a serene and relaxing environment for those searching for a sanctuary, with two crystal clear pools, beautiful rose bush-filled gardens, and an abundance of bird life. The Balalaika Hotel has been fulfilling Joburgers’ needs for an amazing 66 years. The hotel was established in 1948 as a tea garden in a quaint country house, and in 1949 it was officially established as a hotel. As part of the history of Johannesburg, it seems that almost everyone has their own story about the Balalaika. As a result,

Balalaika

the hotel is a sort of heritage site filled with memories, a rich cultural history, and an impressive legacy. There is even a mini museum inside its corridors, bursting with reminders of the influential people who have visited the hotel, including Steve Zachary (who recorded his album inside the hotel), Sir Richard Branson (who dropped by and signed a bottle of wine as a memento of his visit), and Gerard le Grand, who founded the Balalaika.

Now progressing towards the future, the hotel is constantly evolving. An ongoing refurbishment programme has enabled The Balalaika to offer the most modern facilities, such as free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a business centre, and state of the art conferencing facilities (which can hold a maximum of 300 people). The Bull Run Restaurant (in existence for 14 years), offers first-class service and food. The restaurant ages its own meat and there is even a master in-house butcher to provide only the freshest of meat. The restaurant also blends its own red and white wines, which is just another personal touch that gives the Balalaika that extra sparkle.

In the 1980’s, the Balalaika’s Thatch roof was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere

rand spanking new and oh-so-exciting, we couldn’t wait to try the brand new Taste Sensation Restaurant in Illovo, inside The Reserve office park. Now I know what you’re thinking, office equals workplace equals bureaucracy equals boring. Right? Wrong! The Taste Sensation Restaurant is bold and bright and is located in the most beautiful gardens you will forget you are in the center of the city. Most importantly it is extremely affordable, forget being ripped off by ostentatious overwhelming cuisine. The menu is simple, classic, friendly and inviting. Simply put it is an all day, everyday menu. For starters we tried the Asian Style Fishcakes served with Asian greens and sweet chili sauce and stuffed with beautiful fresh coriander. They were absolutely delightful because they are made from scratch, 100% fresh and sensational of course. Then we opted for the Gourmet Roast Beef sandwich and the roast vegetable and feta salad. With the emphasis firmly on casual dining this is exactly what was served, but deliciously combined flavors that will remain with you long after you arrive home.

Hello Joburg’s

HOT spots

Muesli topped with fresh seasonal fruit salad, Greek yoghurt with a drizzle of honey for only 45 bucks, I mean, you cannot go wrong! Another crowd pleaser is the gourmet burger - chicken, beef and vegetarian all served with golden fries. Again for only 55 bucks. But the real winner for me, is the cake table. That’s right - as you enter the restaurant you are welcomed by smiling, cheerful cakes and cupcakes. Decadent cake creations are made fresh and served every single day. So go on over for a lunch visit and grab yourself a cupcake for dessert (only R18) and when you do remember what Julia Child said: “You don’t have to cook complicated or fancy masterpieces, just good food from fresh ingredients”. H Open 8am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Bookings also available for private functions on weekends. 54 Melville Rd, Sandton | 071 816 9583

They also serve breakfast; all day long and apparently the breakfast cups are a firm favorite.

NEW Coricraft Kramerville Superstore There’s a new retail destination on the Kramerville décor and design block – a flagship Coricraft store that opened its doors on 15 July 2015. But this is not just any Coricraft store; it’s the brand’s next-generation store that offers an unparalleled home furnishing retail experience and unbeatable prices - and there really is just so much more to love. At 2500 square metres, the new Kramerville spaces are more than twice the size of any other Coricraft store in the country, but it is how the space has been used and what’s on offer that really differentiates this impressive store. A gorgeous double volume space with ramp access (perfect for trolleys and prams), the store has been designed around a multilevel apartment concept that brings Coricraft’s exceptional range of home furnishings to life.

8

The Coricraft offering has evolved to include a complete collection of locally manufactured and internationally sourced home furnishings. This enhanced offering allows you to shop for complimentary pieces all under one roof, enabling you to affordably and effortlessly pull together signature décor looks in your own home. 14A Kramer Road, Kramerville 011 262 1710 www.coricraft.co.za Hello Joburg • September 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

MEET ALAN & KRISHEN: They are Joburg’s fashion forward duo. They will bring you front row fashion and the latest in street style every month, keeping you updated on the hottest Jozi trends.

Florals For Spring

‘Florals, for Spring? Groundbreaking.’ Says Meryl Streep’s character in the Devil Wears Prada scathingly. While we know that florals for Spring are quite a cliché, there’s a reason they keep coming back: because they work. We’d like to encourage you to integrate a few floral items into your wardrobe this Spring. Florals certainly do not only mean a summery dress; they can be worn in a variety of trendy ways. We’re seeing florals infiltrating street and sportswear scenes as well as other urban domains. Pair a floral item with denim or a solid colour to strike the right balance. If you’re feeling daring, you can combine florals with prints to create a clashing effect... Super-blogger, Chiara Ferragni rocking florals. We love this updated take on the traditional floral dress.

Stores such as Topshop are combining the traditional Spring florals with street wear. Don’t be afraid to mix urban or sporty items with florals.

Britain’s hottest export has officially opened its 5th flagship store in South Africa this August. Joining the biggest brands under one roof, River Island has become part of the most fashionable shopping mecca South Africa has to offer, Sandton City! With an in-house design team, River Island brings new and original fashion to the shopper weekly. A go-to for great going out looks, amazing denim and fabulous bags and shoes, River Island is renowned for their stylish, affordable fashion for everyone.

Whether it’s River Island’s 70’s luxe, stylish modern bohemian, 70’s glam rock, urbanist or the Parisian Francoise 60’s collection, each trend features an eclectic mix of bold, unique pieces for the season ahead. River Island also offers a full collection of fashion for him. So guys, there are no more excuses! Get with the fashion forward and check out River Island’s redefined men’s fashion collection. This month, HELLO JOBURG talks to 3 influencial fashion bloggers about the ins and outs of their spring closet!

Irina Doman

– I’ll take it all

Spring is the time to embrace the floral designs and the light summer colours! This bias-cut Country Road dress (R1500) will take you from the office to a party with the help of some soft accessories. The leather biker jacket from River Island (R1155) is the perfect transitional piece as it will keep you warm in the chilly spring nights, but also looks great draped over your shoulders as the weather warms up. The biker jacket is softened by its pink hue and goes perfectly with the Dune London Breanna Heels (R1699) in a dusty-pink shade. Add a matching handbag such as this Bvlgari Isabella Rossellini model (R30000) to hold all of your must-haves in, and add a spritz of the light and floral Giorgio Armani Si Eau De Toilette. Now you are ready for the office or Friday night drinks with the ladies.

Ali Graaff

– Seams and silhouettes

As a young woman trying to “make it” in a corporate environment, I have learnt that the attitude with which I face each work day is largely dependent on my outfit and, of course, whether or not I’ve had my morning “fix” in a cup. On days that I need a confidence boost, I reach for a structured blazer (River Island, R1099) and pencil skirt (River Island, R779) - there is something about this combination that always puts a spring in a lady’s step. I complete the powerful ensemble with a pretty pout (MAC Saint Germain lipstick, R195) and a spritz of scent (Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia 100ml, R1360). Take your power suit to the next level. Don’t be afraid to ditch the pinstripes and incorporate pastels and floral prints into your office attire. Start by introducing the trends with accessories. This Ted Baker floral iPad cover (available www.seamsandsilhouettes.com at Stuttafords, R599,95) has chic and sophisticated boss lady written all over. f /SeamsandSilhouettes t @AliGraaff @seamsandsilhouettes

To me, style has so many different elements. I cannot describe my style in a certain way as I change it up all the time. Fashion is about playing dress up and being creative with your choices. This is what I love about Joburg’s take on fashion – while we remain up to date with international trends, we aren’t afraid to add some South African flavour to our style. Progressive; innovative; trendy and true to ourselves is how I see Joburg’s fashion style. Here’s what I’m wearing: Kimono – River Island (R779), Jeggings – Factorie (R169), Shoes – Mr Price (bought them long time ago), Hat – River Island (R229), Sunglasses – RayBan (R1990), Watch – Fossil (R2699). www.theglamgreengirl.com f /TheGlamGreenGirl t @GlamGreenGirl @cassicass_tm

The air undoubtedly has a warmer breeze blowing through Johannesburg and it means shrugging off the jackets, venturing out of the house and exploring the city again. We’re spoiled for choice with things to do and it can be somewhat overwhelming. However there are few free apps that can help you along. The first app is great for parents when kids whine that they’re bored. It’s called “I’m bored” and is available for download in the Google Play store. There is also a website: www.imboard.co.za. The app offers up various activities and fun days out for the little ones. It also shares activities in Durban and Cape Town so you can already start prepping your December holiday! After a day out with the little ones you’ll likely need a day to unwind as well so GoBeauty is the perfect option. It’s an app based on the WeChat platform that lets you book beauty appointments on the go without ever having to make a phone call. chef of the month

Chef Romuald Denesle

An authentic French restaurant must have an authentic French chef. C’est la vérité

F

amily-run restaurant A La Bouffe certainly does not pay lip service to its genuine French cuisine. With multi-award winning French Chef Romuald Denesle at the helm of the family-run business, local palates looking for a little French romance need look no further that 32 Seventh Street Linden. Using the best locally supplied produce, together with his wife Margeux Denesle and father in law, Dennis Rhodes Human, nothing could run much tighter than this French ship.

You get to live out your dream and the competitiveness of the industry keeps you on your toes

A La Bouffe means “come and eat” in French slang and be warned you may not want to stop either. If you are going to visit, please leave the banting at the door, as the bread alone on the tables is simply superb. Chef Romuald is the real deal. With two decades in the kitchen under his apron, know that anything you order on his seasonal menu will satisfy and then some. Born in Normandy, France, he began his culinary journey at the hungry age of 15, where he cut his teeth on various chopping boards in France. He has worked in some of the most renowned eateries on the food globe; from no-nonsense seafood restaurant, Charlot Roi de Coquillages to England’s prestigious Fleur de Sel Michelin starred restaurant. Head Chef at award winning restaurant Opus One in Perth located in the New Country Hotel in Perth, Chef Romuald went on to win a string of prestigious awards in his career. Moving into the here and now, Chef Romuald has been wielding carving knives and spatulas at A La Bouffe since they opened their doors on the 15th of July 2014. His cooking style is authentically French and he describes his food as honest, simple and homely. For a chef who loves cooking with

fish, it makes perfect sense that one of his all-time favourite meals to make and eat would have to be Bouillabaisse. The traditional fish stew hails from the port city of Marseille and if you haven’t tried it, you don’t know what you are missing (#justsaying). We’re too nervous to ask about how he does it, but there’s something in the dish’s herbs and spicy broth that just comforts the soul. And while we are on the subject of the menu, what would a French restaurant be sans a braised rabbit in red wine with a mushroom ragout, asparagus and new potatoes? Right? We know it’s not everyone’s favourite but for those who have yet to try it, don’t sully the experience anywhere else – you have now been warned. A food lover through and through, there isn’t anything he can’t or won’t make, but Chef Romuald admits that if he has to pinpoint a least favourite task it would be pastry. So where did his love for the kitchen come from? “I am from a family of many chefs so I guess it had to be that way,” says Chef Romuald. Still inspired by a host of chefs, Chef Romuald keeps a keen eye on those who tout foraging and uses this in his own kitchen. Working in a restaurant certainly has its pros and cons. Chef Romuald explains. “You get to live out your dream and the competitiveness of the industry keeps you on your toes. I also get to meet a lot of people every single day. But then of course there are the long and challenging hours and the customers who watch MasterChef and reckon they know everything,” he quips. For a chef with so many awards, we couldn’t help but want to brag on his behalf. Here are some of the more note-able wins: • • • • • • •

RECIPE: MIDDLE EASTERN CAULI WRAP

Serving Size: 4 | Prep time: 50 mins One of my favourite veggies to cook with definitely has to be cauliflower. Packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals, cauliflower acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory, boosts brain health, detoxifies the body, and keeps the immune system in tip top shape –an absolute essential in amongst our busy lifestyles. Cauliflower is also very low in carbohydrates, and can be used as a nifty replacement for grains and flours. For those of you following the banting lifestyle, cauliflower can be used to make low carb versions of your favourite starchy meals. From cauliflower rice, mash, wraps and pizza bases, this vegetable is wonderfully versatile and so good for you! Here is one of my favourite cauliflower recipes – so simple, and delicious! Ingredients for Cauli Wrap 1 cauliflower head cut into florets 4 Tbsp psyllium husk 2 eggs 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. mixed dried herbs Coconut flour for dusting Ingredients for filling 4 cauliflower wraps (see recipe below) 1 cucumber – spiced into julienne strips 2 large tomatoes, sliced 6 Tbsp. natural Tahini 6 chicken breasts – cut into strips 1 block feta cheese – crumbed 2 avocados - sliced 1 Tbsp. coconut oil 1 tsp. crushed garlic 1 tsp. dried rosemary 1 tsp. dried oregano Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions Step 1: Prepare Cauliflower Wraps Steam cauliflower florets until soft. Drain excess moisture and place into a food processor until cauliflower has a crumbed appearance. Remove cauliflower from blender and place in the middle of a kitchen cloth. Wrap the cauliflower in the cloth and gently squeeze to remove any excess moisture. Place cauliflower in a mixing bowl. Add egg, psyllium husk, herbs and salt and mix together thoroughly to form a dough. Use coconut flour as a dusting agent to prevent sticking. Dust your hands with coconut flour too as mixture can get sticky. Break dough up into four portions. Lay each portion out onto a well dusted surface, coating with coconut flour each time. Use rolling pin to flatten dough and shape into round wraps. Roll very gently as this is not as malleable as normal dough. Once wraps are prepared, dry fry in a large flat frying pan, until lightly browned and then flip wrap to cook the other side. Remove from heat once cooked and leave aside to cool

Step 2: Prepare Chicken Cut chicken into thin strips. Heat coconut oil in large frying pan on high heat. Add dried herbs and garlic and fry for 30 seconds. Add chicken, salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium and sauté chicken for approximately 7 minutes until cooked through completely. Remove chicken from heat and cover until ready to use. Step 3: Build Wrap Place wrap on chopping board. Slice tomatoes and cucumbers. Pile cucumber strips and tomato sliced flat in the middle of the wrap. Add chicken strips and avocado slices. Top with tahini and crumbled feta. Roll wrap and hold together using a toothpick to keep wrap sealed. Repeat the above for remainder of wraps Bon Appetit!

xoxo

THE MARVELOUS MUNCHING MONGOOSE

I

Fresh, organic and more, delivered to your door.

have to tell you HELLO JOBURGers - this is possibly the most exciting concept to hit 2015. When we found out about the Munching Mongoose we just had to try it out, to find out more, it is revolutionizing the way we see and feel about food. Unfortunately we live in a society where most people do not think about what they consume and many of us don’t have access to ethical products. So where did it all begin? The Munching Mongoose started as a result of two friends Brad and Tamryn having a similar idea, but on parallel paths, which they eventually decided to combine. Tamryn lives and works for herself in Barberton where she was a customer of a vegetable box delivery service, which brought her an array of amazing fresh produce directly from the farms in the Lowveld. Brad says “I thought that a more comprehensive and regular food service could be of great value to people, particularly in Johannesburg, who may be pressed for time to go to markets but still want to introduce healthier options to their pantries.” And the best news, Joburgers, is that your munching goodies are delivered right to your front door! Included in the goodie boxes are fresh farm, free-range milk, crispy crusted artisanal bread, locally made, organic gourmet cheese, fresh & seasonal fruit and vegetables from ethical farms; such as green spinach and broccoli and the cherry on top, a little surprise to tickle your taste buds. “Our aim is to partner with like-minded people who are producing their goods following ethical, sustainable and organic based principles, and all grow together. “Because the Munching Mongoose is built on an ethical foundation it makes it that much more exceptional. The owners live and breathe their brand, believe in old school values such as honesty and integrity, and are passionate about helping people look after themselves and the environment. With food making up 28% of our ecological footprint, it is crucial we care about what we put into our bodies. So we have to say bravo to the Munching Mongoose team, trying to make a difference, impacting our lives and environment. We salute you. H

HelloRecommends

a festive dining evening at

Higher Ground Restaurant Only the second #HelloRecommends evening that we have hosted, but oh-so successful and joyous!

T

he evening took place on the 20th of August at the highspirited Higher Ground Restaurant. There is a reason Higher Ground Restaurant is a firm favorite with Joburgers and we were adamant to prove exactly why. And the only way to do so was to give our invitees the chance to taste the simple and beautifully prepared food. The purpose of the evening was to once again showcase the newly launched GoHello app. Revolutionary in its field and constantly evolving with our city and its people, the app showcases the very best restaurants, hotels and leisure activities in Jozi. We stepped into the fast-approaching Spring season and wined and dined outside the

restaurant on the cozy veranda. With a view to melt hearts we just knew that this special location had to be shared! Our fifteen favorite foodies were welcomed with silver Patron and Appletizer drinks, which certainly got the celebration started! Whilst mingling and sipping on their bubbles, the guests marveled at the setting on the beautiful grounds of St. Stithians College.

strawberry cheesecake and the cherry on top: guests were exuberantly spoiled by Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate with their brand new Joy With Silk slab. HELLO indulgence!

Time to feast! All our guests became skin deep in a selection of foods from the set menu. A delightful choice of succulent calamari, a blue cheese and bacon salad, or the finest, juiciest kebabs as a starter. For mains, the choice was a dire one: an expertly prepared lamb shank, an indulgent seared salmon steak or a succulent chicken dish. Dessert was a choice between their delectable crème brulee or the delicate

Cheers to many more Hello Recommends! evenings!

So what are you waiting for? Make a note in your diary to look out for our next HelloRecommends evening, they will be a monthly treat where we host our beloved culinary connoisseurs.

Magic Mike SA August might have been the coldest month in Joburg but it was sizzling when I went to watch Magic Mike South Africa: modeled after the Magic Mike movie starring Channing Tatum and Matthew The evening was intimate and each McConaughey, at The Arena in of the beefy gentlemen that danced, Fourways. paid special attention to their crowd Greeted at the door by hosts, flashing well-sculpted biceps, who escorted us through to our table where we commenced with a three-course dinner service. These hosts stayed with us through the evening, tending to our (almost) every need. Before the show, the Emcee called them onto stage to wet our taste buds by asking them to de-shirt. I didn’t stop them, of course. The show kicked off with a crowdpleasing puppet show where two dolls were manipulated to dance in the styles of pantsula and kwassa, which, hasn’t got much to do with the show, but was wonderful. Then, the moment arrived; the lights went out and through siren alarms smoke engulfed the venue. Through the smoke, beams of torch-light scanned the room, and we were greeted by a horde of strapping young men dressed as firemen. Well, not for long…

of bachelorettes, birthday girls and…well… me (“The Only Gay in the Village”). The show is made up of themed dance performances, which take place between two acts throughout the night, with a lot of fraternising with the “Mike’s” in between. After the show the venue turns into a dance club where the fraternising is even more encouraged. If a buffet is what you’re looking for and you decide to proverbially drink from the rationed Magic-Mike-SouthAfrica-tap, know that the bottomless fountain leaves you thirsty for more! Perhaps that was my biggest gripe of the evening: MORE. Then again, sometimes one’s eyes can be bigger than one’s stomach.

Bouffant

... a production company whose work speaks for itself

Bouffant launched in 2007 and while just under a decade old has made a name for itself in the industry as a creative force with which to be reckoned. The label’s burgeoning profile rests largely in the eclectic mix of talent on board. So if you haven’t heard their names yet, you will soon. And if you consider yourself half a creative groupie and film fundi, watch out for these two: Michael MacGarry and Thabang Moleya While both cut their teeth sharply with outstanding commercial work for the likes of Toyota, DSTV, Hansa and Coco-Cola, both have morphed into creators of longer length films.

Michael MacGarry is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Johannesburg. With seven short films under his belt and a row of awards to match, his work comprises dramatic narrative filmmaking infused with original storytelling from both an African and a South African perspective. In his own words: “being a visual artist and a filmmaker, my work tends towards quite a look-driven approach; both in the work I shoot myself and with professional crews that widely draws on the history of cinema”. Michael adds: “In commercials I mostly enjoy work that has a real cinematic sensibility, both in the look and the storytelling; coupled with an opportunity to explore new, locally-specific visual languages and styles.” Michael’s most recent piece of work; Sea of Ash showcases the ‘MacGarry investigative thread’ of the consequences of colonialism on the African continent. A moving travel narrative shot in Venice, Bassano del Grappa and Milan; the short film is a meditative reimaging of German author Thomas Mann’s 1925 novella Death in Venice, which features a West African immigrant as the character Tadzio. With the reality of refugee life at the heart, the film follows Tadzio on a remarkable journey home.

Michael, who has a Masters in Fine Art from WITS University, has exhibited work Hello Joburg • September 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

at an international level for more than a decade. Museums include the Tate Modern, Guggenheim Bilbao and Kiasma Museum. Spoken like a true self-critical creative, Michael says he hopes that his best is still ahead of him. “Having recently moved back to Johannesburg from Cape Town, I’m looking forward to a busy second half of 2015 and several key projects in 2016. My advice to young creatives - whatever you do - is to work, work, work, work, work. Then when your career is full time, to really seriously start working.” Another bouffant magician with a shelf of awards that showcase his talent, is Thabang Moleya. Moleya says that his journey began with his love of photography, which led to film. His long-term relationship with visual art stems back to high-school with shadow puppets and make up stories for his siblings. As a student he won numerous awards including a Vuka award and Best Short Film at the Sithenghi Film Festival. Thabang has worked with some of SA’s top advertising agencies and clients. As he has maneuvered the nuances of successful narrative, Thabang believes that nothing matters more when handling a script than to knead it with the authenticity it deserves. About the local industry, Thabang concedes it is a competitive space and there are a lot of things you will never learn about in a film class. “It hasn’t been an easy journey,” he says. “But I’ve learned that challenges and obstacles are ultimately there to make me a better storyteller.” Moleya is currently working on a romantic drama called Happiness is a Four Letter Word with a team of producers that include Bongiwe Selane, Junaid Ahmed, Helena Spring and Co-Producer is Gillian Pearson. Hosted on Dinaledi Stage -which is derived from the Tswana word meaning stars. Audience members will be inaugurated by The Joy of Jazz amaQhawekazi Big Band, conducted by local (and legendary) Trumpeter Prince Lengoasa. The evening will be headlined by Grammy Award-winning Guitarist, Larry Carlton and enhanced by The Yellow Jackets (also from the USA). This is only the beginning Joburgers… Excitement erupts at the idea that Cecile McLorin Salvant, Marcus Miller, William Parker, Dee Alexander, Peabo Bryson, Dwight Tribble, The 3 Cohens & Lee Oskar all from the USA will be sharing (and uplifting) the Joy of Jazz stage with our African artists! Which includes our National Youth Band, the ever-present and memorable; Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi, Nduduzo Makhathini, Simphiwe Dana, Jimmy Dluldlu, Estelle Kokot, Ray Phiri, Mozambican duo Jaco Maria and his daughter Wanda Baloyi. This doesn’t even begin to include the five bands chosen from the digital #Discover competition and the unique likes of Nono Nkoane, Omagugu Makhathini, Herbie Tsoaeli, Pops Mohamed and Tlale Makhene who’ll amplify their friends’ presence on stage. All of the above will happen between Friday and Saturday on the other three SBJOJ stages: Diphala, Conga and Mbira. Tickets for the entire weekend cost R1250 per person and R750 for one day of magic. In case you’re searching for something spicier, Matthew Halsall will also be on stage, all the way from the UK with his trumpeting and DJing skills. Omar Sosa will also make his way back SA from Cuba with two friends Paulo Fresu and Trilok Gurtu from Italy and India. It’s a feast for the sultry and sophisticated Souls! This programme purely reflects the collaborative efforts and evolution of Jazz music! Let it be Love at first sound. H

The Peech Hotel

A relaxed retreat in the heart of the city An eco-chic luxurious boutique hotel Set in the suburb of Melrose, this truly is Jozi’s hidden gem. Adorned with African elements and splashes of ethnicity and with only sixteen bedrooms this hotel screams unique and is oh so special. With a beautiful flow of natural light and a shared love of nature and travel this hotel is a masterpiece. In order to imbue the boutique hotel with a sense of outdoor, harmonious living, it is nestled in a stunning garden, which boasts evergreen trees and beautiful blooms, as well as a charming vegetable garden. Although the hotel is small and quaint it gives the illusion of a big open space because of the luscious garden space. It really is a home away from home, only an improved version of being at home. Forging a bond between nature is a pivotal part of the hotels ethos. The hotel is an all-encompassing eco friendly hotel and is a Fair Trade Tourism certified hotel, thereby acknowledging its ethical approach not only to the environment but also to its employees, many of whom have been working there since its opening ten years ago. Because the owners and management are environmentally responsible they enhance the culture of green living and have made vital environmental improvements to our city and its surroundings. The hotel has evolved over the years and continues to progress and advance into the perfect weekend retreat. One of the biggest achievements of the hotel has to be the restaurant. The bistro overlooks the gorgeous gardens and allows for an intimate dining experience. “Our chef ’s have created a menu that reflects what The Peech is all about – simple, laid-back and chic with an understated touch of sophistication.” The food is locally sourced and organic where possible and most essentially it is exceptional. Homey but also grand in its presence, you instantly feel calm and centered. A pre-warning: it is rather difficult to leave. H

motoring Alfa Romeo’s

Giulietta QV

S

eptember – the beginning of spring, the season when things start to happen. Changes, resolutions and plans for summer are mulled over and things sprout. Perhaps you are in the market for a change? Looking for a new car to blossom in your driveway? If you are, here are four unique options worth considering - for your day-to-day commutes in and around our Jacaranda filled streets of Jozi.

The Giulietta nameplate began in 1954 – a family vehicle, but with a heart of a racer. Not much has changed in over 60 years for the Giulietta, having the same attributes some six decades later. As hatchbacks go, the Giulietta is very attractive – scintillatingly sexy in fact, especially in QV or Quadrifoglio Verde form, which is the top of the range model. Recently updated - after its 2010 launch, the Giulietta now features trim changes that include a new Uconnect infotainment system with

5” touchscreen, a new front grille, a chrome-plated frame for the fog lights, a new and more supportive seat design, new wheels, as well as fresh exterior colours: Moonlight Pearl, Anodizzato Blue and Bronze. 1750 is an engine size which has its roots in Alfa Romeo’s history, with 1.75l engines being used to power some of Alfa Romeo’s first cars. Though not the traditional 1.8l size as many other manufacturers may use – this engine is a gem. It’s free revving, powerful and acoustically gorgeous to the ear - it isn’t the most fuel efficient hatch on the planet - returning fuel consumption figures above 10l per 100km, but its performance makes up for its thirst. The Giulietta QV is the cream of the Giulietta range and is priced at R430 000 but prices begin at R355 000 for the 1.4 Distinctive.

Fiat’s

500L Trekking Fiat’s been cooking up something bigger in the kitchen: making a larger version of their iconic little 500, the 500L. Why, you may ask? The bigger 500L is substantially larger. It has room for five adults and a month’s worth of groceries. Its boot is highly adaptable too, allowing space for a bicycle if the back seats are retracted. Added to the 500L range is the Trekking model. Designed for those who like adventure in their lives. The Trekking sits 10% higher than the standard model, having a ground clearance of 145mm. It’s garnished with worrier armour to ward off any knocks and bumps and comes with a nifty electronic aid - allowing some trekking, called Traction Plus. The 500L Trekking is the top of the range in the 500L line up. It comes with a playful 1.4 turbo-charged engine that is quick off its feet.

48

The 500L is available from 35 Fiat dealerships nationwide and comes standard with a 3 year/100 000km warranty and maintenance plan included in the price: from R260 000 to R320 000 for the Trekking model. Hello Joburg • September 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

The Mazda2 Mazda’s design philosophy, KODO, encompasses the pure meaning of ‘breathing life into the car’. A car isn’t simply a mass of metal. Mazda believes it’s more like a living creature. Creating an emotional bond between a driver and their car - comparable with the relationship between a rider and his horse. This ideology has been used to create the smallest member of the Mazda family, the Mazda2. It is compact, stylish and tech savvy. The new Mazda2 has been and will continue to be a standout product from the Mazda brand. It is the newest member of the family - being launched this year and fitted with a spritely 1.5, 4-cylinder motor. This little city hatch is a go-getter - loaded with advanced features like keyless entry, MP3 compatibility, USB-audio input port2 (iPod compatible), keyless pushbutton engine start, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio capability, 7” full colour touchscreen display (MZD Connect) and headlamps with an auto on/off function. The range-topping Hazumi Auto 1.5L DE also includes: air-conditioning (climate control), half leather seat trim, satellite navigation and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The Madza2 is an accomplished city car - happy to drive through less than perfect road conditions and outpace its competition in a sprint. It is priced from R188 000 and rolls up to R259 900 for the top of the range variant. H

Stylish New Ford B-MAX Challenges Traditional Small Car Thinking The new Ford B-MAX features a unique design, superb fuel economy and unrivalled small car technology which makes it one of the most advanced cars in its class. With a steel cage running through all four doors, the spacious Ford B-MAX is clean and clutter-free. Unobstructed entry and exit with hinged front and sliding rear doors integrates the traditional central pillar structure into the front and rear doors, rather than forming part of the bodyshell itself. The unique Ford Easy Access Door System delivers new levels of convenience, flexibility and access. When both front and rear doors of the B-MAX are open, interior access is made easy. With a clear aperture of more than 1.5 metres wide, attending to children, or loading and unloading shopping is significantly easier. Ford engineers developed innovative solutions to ensure the B-MAX delivers the same outstanding levels of crash protection as vehicles with a more conventional structure. Some 58% of the body and door structure is made up of high strength and ultra-high-strength steel to ensure it is strong and rigid while remaining highly weight-efficient. The B-MAX brings new standards of fuel efficiency to the compact MAV class. As the 2012, 2013 and 2014 “International Engine of the Year” and winner of the sub-1.0-litre class for the past four years, the 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine is available in two versions. The entry-level B-MAX Ambiente produces 74kW while the midrange Trend and range-topping Titanium derivatives boast a 92kW

output. Both versions feature a peak torque of 170Nm. Combined cycle fuel consumption is rated as low as 4.9 l/100km* matched to a CO2 emissions figure of 114 g/km for the 92kW models*. The innovative B-MAX comes standard with numerous advanced features, including the Ford SYNC® voice control, device integration and connectivity interface. Engineered to provide outstanding safety, the Intelligent Protection System (IPS) uses a range of sophisticated technologies designed to help keep you and your family protected, including an Anti-locking Brake System with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Hill Launch Assist. The B-MAX is true to the Ford fun-to-drive brand, offering outstanding agility and manoeuvrability designed specifically for the cut and thrust of city driving. T

hree-year old Viper was trained as a rhino poacher-tracking dog in Mpumalanga, but he didn’t enjoy the long hot days in the veld tracking scents. Viper is more of a sprinter than a long distance runner and it was decided he would be better suited to community policing. Enter CORTAC and Senior Tactical Officer Lawrence Magowa, who has worked at CORTAC for the past five years. Lawrence, who loves dogs, volunteered to become CORTAC’s first dog handler at the beginning of this year. The training was intense. It involved twomonths on site military-style training at a dog training school. Lawrence and Viper spent days and nights sleeping next to each other on mountains, bonding and getting to know each other. Viper enjoyed the training and action that came with it, including jumping through open car windows to catch criminals and rappelling from a helicopter. As a working dog, Viper needs the best

nutrition available. Champion Petfoods generously sponsor Viper’s food. He eats ACANA, an award-winning Canadian pet food packed with 60% chicken, eggs and fish to keep him in optimal condition, and his energy levels steady without any of the dips that come with carbohydrates. Lawrence starts his day each morning giving Viper breakfast and brushing his coat. The team is a formidable force in the Parks and Linden areas, having been involved in the successful arrests of a number of suspects involving thefts out of motor vehicles. They can often be spotted proactively patrolling the Braamfontein Spruit, and along Tana Road in Linden. Their shifts generally start at 15h00 and continue through to 03h00 the following morning. Lawrence says with a smile, “Viper listens to me so nicely. He likes me too much. We are great friends and a great team”. Residents in The Parks can sleep better at night knowing that CORTAC’s fearless tracking dog is patrolling the streets and will stop at nothing to catch criminals. H
