t seems like winter is in full swing, and many of us will probably spend the rest of the season huddled indoors. The cold has never stopped the team at Hello Joburg, and we’ve spent many chilly days wandering through this glorious city to find divine eateries, fun activities and loads more – just for you! One of those new spots is Sushi Burrito & Co – the latest, tastiest foodie concept to hit the City of Gold. Situated in Melrose Arch, the restaurant is already a hive of activity… must be the combination of Japanese and Asian cuisine - the food is fun and delicious! Our restaurant of the month is an absolute delight. Glenda’s has been around for a while, but if you haven’t checked it out, do yourself a favour and get there pronto! The décor is light and inviting, the staff are friendly and attentive and the food… let’s just say their salmon is a gift from Mother Nature herself. Divine! You can tell how much love and work has gone into creating this gem, and we love it. Another newbie that we can’t get enough of is Milk & Honey Bar in Montecasino. Created by the same minds that bought you the delectable Lima Tapas Bar (you’ll remember that treat from our June issue), this hot little cocktail bar is a must-visit. That’s right, we said cocktails… and they are amazing. Amazing to look at, amazing in taste… just amazing. Over the weekends, the venue also plays fantastic music, making it the go-to spot for a fantastic time. One thing I must do is congratulate our cover star – Nataniël is celebrating an incredible 30 years of working in the entertainment industry. He’s published books, written a number of hit shows and – who can forget – worked alongside the legendary Gordon Ramsey for those hilarious Checker’s adverts. It’s crystal clear that this star has many adoring fans, and I can only wish him another 30 glorious years on stage! Congratulations Nataniël!

Want the hair of a Victoria Secret model? Thick, silky, smooth with soft rounded edges? Yup, we all do. Luckily, You Bar offers the most miraculous blow-dries. Plus, they offer the best

in hair treatments. Think Kerastase, Davines and Inoar, but we recommend the L’Oreal Professionnel Smart Bond treatment. This protective, strengthening service is specifically designed for hairdressers, and leaves your hair feeling conditioned and oh-so-smooth. Simultaneously, book yourself a Mani or Pedi (or both) with the latest Gelish colors or Morgan Taylor shades. They’ll throw in a hand or foot massage that will leave you feeling carefree for days. We’re head over heels for this salon - not only because of their signature treatments, Africology products or unique tea range (The Devil’s Advocate tea is a must-try), but we love the über chic and modern design. You Bar makes you believe every day should be a good hair day. Thrupps Illovo Centre, 204 Oxford Road, Illovo 5 www.youbar.co.za 1 011 268 6489 @youbar.allaboutyou

Coco Chanel said “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself,” and we’re definitely not disputing that. However, we do think a blow wave and a Mani/Pedi helps. We visited the new You Bar salon and clearly we’re hooked. The salon is gloriously spacious, with an exclusive wash area. There’s also a manicure station, a blow dry bar, a pedicure area and upstairs, they’ve just launched luxurious facials and massages on offer.

What we learned: A decent cup of coffee doesn’t need sugar. Like wine, one must have a sense for good tasting coffee. There’s 40mg of caffeine per cup of coffee! Bean There Coffee is passive organic. The longer the brewing, the larger the grind size. Latte art is not as easy as it looks, but it’s great fun to try!

We all deserve to feel like a million bucks!

ig, big news! Fans of You Bar Hair & Nail on Corlett Drive will be pleased to know they’re getting bigger and better. They recently moved to Thrupps, Illovo Centre, and we couldn’t be happier.

The deets: The Home Brewing course takes place on a Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm. It kicks off with a cappuccino and then delves into the art of coffee. The first half focuses on slow brewing methods. The second half is all about espresso and milk basics.

STREET FOOD FESTIVAL ZA IN ITS SECOND YEAR On 10 September, the festival plans to have foodies diving mouth-open towards the many food trucks and stalls. Common Ground on 16 Staib Street in beautiful, rustic Maboneng, is the venue of choice for culinary genius, Hannerie Visser. She founded the festival and in the past few years, it’s grown by thousands of attendees. If you love food or are a food entrepreneur, you can’t miss this! The festival consists of the market, food entrepreneur talks and the only best live music. Young food entrepreneurs, be warned - the food trucks, vendors and food stalls that are there will be by invite only.

5 www.streetfoodfestival.co.za GRINGO CAFÉ - LONG LIVE THE MEXICAN INSPIRED LOCAL CHOW! We went to the Craftsmen’s Ship building in the new side of the precinct. The setting is that of a relaxed beach café, offering an array of imported wall art that is captivating. If you’re the kind that looks for fancy and sophisticated, this is the place that will humble your habits back to what matters most flavour. Try the dunked black wing with their hot sauce, simply delicious after a good house brand tequila. What we had: Mexican wings and thangs, which look intimidating in their fierce black colour, but these are a different kind of taste explosion in your mouth. We escaped the diet realm by having tacos after the hot wings too. More food: We sunk our teeth into pulled beef and pulled chicken El Gringo Tacos, with one soft and one hard shell just to give the stomach a shock. To drink: We finished the day off exactly how we started it… bring on the tequila!

T

he reintroduction of a classic, a new store opening and more! Looks like quite a bit happened while you weren’t looking. Luckily, we’ve summed it up for you!

Jinger Jack launches personalised monogramming

The Great Ice-scape Winter 2017 collection is the stuff dreams are made of. Inspired by the playful, sophisticated art of figure skating, there are six new matching gel polish and lacquer shades – N-ice Girls Rule (pale pink shimmer), Figure 8’s & Heartbreaks (dusty mauve crème), Ice Queen Anyone? (copper shimmer), Lace ‘Em Up (midnight blue crème), Flirt In A Skating Skirt (steel blue crème) and Hey, Twirlfriend! (warm nude crème). Available from most beauty retailers. 5www.morgantaylorlacquer.com

We adore the leather bags from Jinger Jack, so when we heard about their new monogram service, we did cartwheels. It’s so simple… choose between four finishes; gold, silver, rose gold and blind, a Helvetica font in 24pt – perfect for smaller items (think wallets and sling bags), or 36pt – ideal for handbags and travel cases. There’s also a sweet little selection of motifs, if you want to add that personal touch. Available from The Beautiful Life Store, 4th Avenue, corner of 14th Street, Parkhurst. 5 www.jingerjack.co.za

The flagship store in Sandton City’s Diamond Walk recently got a face-lift, and now reflects the luxury that is synonymous with the brand. The store is bright, creative and definitely highlights the full brand experience of men’s and women’s shoes, accessories, watches and perfumes.

ALL ABOUT HEART!

Food to make you smile

T

ucked away in Hyde Square is the charming Glenda’s, a haven for foodies who love seasonal flavours and a menu that never ceases to amaze.

You’re greeted by a display of freshly baked pastries and cakes as you walk in. The décor is clean, with pops of colour to catch your eye, and the atmosphere is buzzing. Mirrors line the walls, reflecting hot pink chairs and plush, turquoise booths. Colourful tapestries drape the walls and a gorgeous marble-top, mirrored bar calls for you to sample the tipples behind it. Glenda’s is all about good, fresh food that will leave you wanting more. A nursery in the backyard means fresh herbs and salad greens are added to the dishes of the day. And what dishes they are! Hello Joburgers, grab a napkin – you may drool a bit. We started our ascent into foodie heaven with the seared salmon, which is pretty as a picture! Coated in a slightly sweet, sticky sauce, the fish was perfectly cooked and served with juicy salmon caviar, carrots and mushrooms, wild rice puffs and horseradish cream. We also couldn’t resist sampling a plate of the pan seared gnocchi, which Glenda revealed that she made with ricotta cheese, to give it that divine fluffy texture. It paired perfectly with the pea puree, seasonal veggies and smoked carpaccio. The main attraction had to be the mouth-watering salmon fish cake. Served on a bed of spinach and doused in a tangy rocket mayo, this (in our opinion) is the best value for money at Glenda’s. The fish cake is a generous portion, and comes with a delicious side of parmesan, rock salt and parsley covered fries. Absolutely divine!

Hyde Square, corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and North Road, Hyde Park.

Grab dessert from that sweet display we mentioned earlier. It’s called Dotty Choux, and it’s the takeaway patisserie counter that specialises in delectable choux pastry. From tarts and muffins to cakes and madeleines that are lighter than air – it’s what dreams are made of ! Glenda’s is an absolute treat, and is open for breakfast, lunch, tea, after work drinks and dinner. Pop on in Hello Joburgers, you won’t regret it.

Not a fan of fish? The fillet is also a must-try; the meat is incredibly tender and perfectly cooked, while the cauliflower puree is impossibly smooth and packed with flavour. It’s served with a delicious dauphinoise (which is a traditional regional French dish based on potatoes and crème fraiche), fresh veggies and a braised short rib pot sticker.

He ignited his interest in the creation of culinary experiences while practicing in 3-Michelin starred restaurants across the UK and France. He enjoys simple food prepared well, using quality produce and innovative flavours. Whilst he is particular about the plating of each dish that he sends from the pass, Russell notes that dishes today look more like a picture than something to eat. However, he believes in the flavour remaining paramount. Russell would love to share his table with Thomas Keller, of

tepping on to the grounds of Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank is like stepping in to another world - tranquil, leafy and exactly what you’d expect from one of Rosebank’s most upmarket boutique hotels. Guests and diners who prefer an intimate, unpretentious establishment which offers attention to all the details, as well as personalised interaction with staff, find Clico to be their first choice. It’s no secret that the food coming out of Clico Restaurant, under the direction of Head Chef Marnus Scholly, is part of the reason why. Having worked at game lodges around the Mpumalanga area, Chef Marnus joined the team at Clico as Sous Chef in 2015. The rest, as they say, is history. He grew up in the North West, in predominantly rural communities and fast learnt to use whatever he could get his hands on. He’s a big champion of using local farmers and products and supplies that are sourced and grown locally.

24

Of course, we asked him what the favourite thing about his job is. He loves seeing young talent being inspired. The students that work in the kitchen with him are thirsty for knowledge, and it’s a great feeling to help mould and form a young mind – like his once was. He adds that it’s important for the chefs of today to give back to the young. Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

The team at Clico are 7 strong, and all cook and get involved in every aspect of the kitchen – not just ‘paper chefs’, they manage ordering of stock, menu creation and cook every single day. A chef should not go a day without picking up a knife, adds Chef Marnus. They run the 36-seater restaurant and the conferencing area, as well as hotel guests breakfast service with precision – nothing is impossible for Chef Marnus and his team. The restaurant is known for its fine dining; innovative gourmet fare with an emphasis on seasonal, local and organic products. Its seasonal menus can be adjusted according to personal dietary requirements and the food is complemented by bespoke wines and perfect service in this elegant and sophisticated restaurant. Chef Marnus just launched a brand-new lunch menu, which has a Bistro feel to it… unrefined, yet tasty meals – perfect for those who need to have a quick business meeting. There’s free w-fi and plug points are easily available. Clico Restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner for non-hotel guests, and booking is essential. If you’re looking for the perfect venue to host your baby shower, engagement party or even your wedding, make sure to chat to the team at Clico. They’re flexible, accommodating and will help you create your idea, and work within your budget to create it. And if you’re wondering where you will find Chef Marnus on his day off – that would be discovering local markets and butcheries, building relationships to create sustainable local business. He takes this seriously, and we like that!

Hello Joburgers, you need to visit the new Sushi Burrito & Co. in Melrose Arch. Hitting our trendy city is this new concept, and a one-of-a-kind craze of the famous poke bowl. This place serves the best poke in town and only uses fresh ingredients. If ponzu-marinated salmon with crispy kale, wakame, edamame and enchilada mayo doesn’t tickle your taste buds, then we don’t know what will. The best part about this state-of-the-art restaurant is their open plan kitchen. We also love how everything is made from scratch, specifically the bountiful bao. If you’re not familiar with the term, a bao bun is a steamed Asian bun - incredibly airy! We recommend the panko-crumbed panga fish bao; mildly spicy and severely delicious.

There wasn’t a liquor license when we visited, but here’s hoping there is one by the time you pop in. Alternatively, you’re welcome to bring your own at no extra charge. Plus, they’ll be opening at least two more branches so keep your eyes on our website for the latest deets.

The menu is a combination of Japanese and trendy Asian cuisine on steroids. The mouth-watering menu will bring you culinary glee! The proof ’s in the Shemomedjamo - you know when you’re full, but your meal is just so delicious, you can’t stop eating it? That pretty much sums up how we feel about Sushi Burrito & Co.

LASHES Wink wink!

Y

ou’ve got to love the person who smiles back at you in the morning. Hello Joburg recently discovered that something as simple as a little lash love will definitely add some pep to your step. However, you’re only really aware of it immediately after. The sensation dissipates quickly, and the lashes fast become a fixture that you won’t feel. Deiana’s work is impressive, and the effect of her handiwork is so subtle that it’s hard to tell the lashes aren’t your own. The adhesive used is a high quality, top of the range product, and is extremely strong, so the extensions usually only fall out with the natural lash. The average lash cycle is 4 weeks, although clients are advised to refill the lash extensions every 2 weeks so the effect is maintained.

Hennops Hiking Trail It may be a 45-minute drive north of Joburg, but it’s more than worth the journey. There are three circular hiking routes – a brisk 2km walk, the 6km Zebra Route or the more challenging 11.3km The Krokodilberg Route (4 to 5 hours for experienced hikers). Hennops also have a new Mountain Bike trail and a fantastic new off-road trail. All trails begin by crossing the Hennops River, either by a suspension bridge or via a fun old-fashioned ‘cable car’ which works by a pulley system.

OF THE MONTH

De Krans Cape Pink

Launch date: The De Krans Cape Pink was first launched to the public in 2008, and has gained a large following of port enthusiasts throughout the country. On the nose: Soft,

elegant red fruit flavours of strawberries and cherries. On the palate: Nouveau

port-style wine delivering a smooth, elegant texture on the palate, exploding with red berries, cherries, plums and a touch of candy floss.

Cool fact: De Krans was the first to produce a pink port in South Africa. Try one: at most retail outlets nationwide. Price: Around

How it’s made: The

wine was made by Boets and Stroebel as the first Cape Pink in South Africa, and the result exceeded their expectations! Naming this baby was a real challenge - until they discovered that Marks & Spencer in the UK had just launched a port made by Croft, one of the original port houses in the Douro Valley of Portugal. It was called Croft Pink. And voila - the new wine got the name De Krans Pink Port. De Krans Cape Pink is made from traditional port varieties Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Tinta Amarella. The lovely colour was acquired by allowing only a few hours of skin contact, and the juice is then cooled and fermented for approximately 5 days, before fortification with unmatured brandy spirit. The result is a port with a lovely vibrant blush colour!

winkle, twinkle little star… point us to the finest bar! Milk & Honey is an oasis inside Montecasino. This brand new bar is the hippest hub to hit the streets of Jozi in a long time. To be frank, there isn’t much we don’t love about this space.

Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Montecasino gains a note-worthy addition!

Milk & Honey has the feel of 21st century sophistication with a twist of innovation. This exquisite new addition couldn’t have come at a better time, because whisky aficionados and oenophiles alike are in dire need of somewhere swanky, chic and upmarket to spice up the nightlife scene. We’re talking sprawls of crystal chandeliers, pink velvet couches, marbled finishes and rose gold touches. Smart, elegant and well-designed, this spot will blow your mind (and your taste buds too). Milk & honey serve some of the most premium cocktails in the land. We love that the barmen use an entire fruit - its zest, its pulp, and its skin… the whole darn thing. There’s zero wastage, and all ingredients are seasonal and one hundred per cent fresh. So be warned, you’re headed for a heady concoction of deliciousness!

Drinks ahoy…

Refuse to swap out your summery cocktails for warm winter alternatives? Do you want to be transported to the beach? Do you love something tall and tropical? We recommend the Blanca Bananas, with crisp Bacardi Carta Blanca, full cream sherry and banana liqueur. If you’re more of a dry, bitter fan, try the refreshing Golden Sun Cocktail with Bombay Sapphire Gin, orange juice, anise lemon juice and prosecco. The adventurous type will love the Milk & Honey signature cocktail. Tall, decadent and creamy - it has all things wicked; gin, dark chocolate milk, honey, orange blossom and lemon juice, all topped off with soda water. Our all-time favourite (which is sure to put some hair on your chest) has to be the Mexi-Vino. It’s sweet, salty and oh-so-naughty with Olmeca tequila,

grapes and litchi juice. You’re ensured a taste bud sensation. Eat away…

If you don’t mind sharing tapas style, order a few nibbles and spread the love, because the cocktails definitely pack a punch. Try the hoisin chicken wings, the wild mushroom arancini and the lip-smacking popcorn smothered in truffle honey. Hello Joburgers, this one is an order - you cannot leave without ordering the decadent triple fried fries with Parmesan and truffle oil. Holy mama! They’re worth every calorie. Forget slouching at home with Netflix on repeat. We prefer to doll up and hit the trendiest hotspot, where the bartenders treat you like loyal friends and the affable staff are all about five star service. We guarantee it’s all it’s cracked up to be. Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways, Piazza Montecasino, Sandton

The selection on the menu ensures a unique and exciting experience every time you visit, or you’ll find something you love and stick to it.

FORTY WINKS AT THE WINKLER

here are plenty of reasons to visit Mpumalanga, and we’ve come across another one – the spectacular 4-star Premier Hotel The Winkler. It’s the perfect spot to set up base while exploring the gorgeous surrounding areas. A little over a 4-hour drive from Jozi, The Winkler is nestled in the peaceful town of White River. The first thing you notice when pulling up this slice of serenity is the spectacular tepee like structure erupting from the roof of the round foyer. When you step inside, you discover a green oasis, with tranquil water features and an open ceiling… simply divine.

52

Whether you’re travelling with family or alone, Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

on a mini-vacation or on business, there’s plenty of space to choose from. The Winkler has 82 standard rooms equipped with either king, twin or single beds, each with an en-suite bathroom. The 5 glorious suites are spacious and colourful – we loved the beaded flowers that hung above our luxurious king-sized bed. And the view… waking up to a scenic snapshot of the mountains and lush green foliage is enough to put a smile on any face. If you can pull yourself away from the view, wander through the grounds. There’s a lovely bar (they serve a killer G&T) that overlooks a crystal-clear swimming pool. The land is wide and littered with towering trees, and hidden amongst them is a swing, swaying gently from the branch of a wooden giant. We know it’s for kids… but that didn’t stop us letting loose a bit. Nothing beats the feel of a holiday breeze

whipping back your hair! Now head down to the stunning Wakuja Restaurant. Open for early breakfast and dinner, Wajuka has high ceilings, wooden beams and a striking cobalt blue feature wall. The restaurant is just another magnificent feature to this stunning hotel. We adored the gorgeous beaded chandeliers that cast warm light on the diners as they indulged. A self-service spot, the food is divine and abundant. Choose between chicken or beef and from an array of fresh, vibrant veggies, and watch the talented chef whip up a delish stir-fry. Or indulge in creamy chicken curry, roast gammon or lamb, and fresh, fragrant salads.

We certainly wouldn’t judge you for going back for seconds, or thirds… even fourths. It’s exactly what we did!

The staff are incredibly friendly, and will go out of their way to help you however they can. If you’ve got questions, they’ve got answers. ESCAPE THE ORDINARY at Jock Safari Lodge

Good to know • From Johannesburg, it will take you five hours to drive to Jock Safari, but there’s also a flight to Malelane airport. •

There are two lodges; Jock Main Lodge and Fitzpatrick’s at Jock.

There’s no time to be bored in one of Africa’s largest game reserves The Kruger National Park. This jewel attracts around a million visitors each year; with an abundance of animals, a pristine landscape and a lustrous starry night sky that you’ll never experience anywhere else.

You won’t need malaria tablets.

The Kruger Park lies across two South African provinces – Limpopo and Mpumalanga. It’s also home to 75% of all terrestrial bird species and 72% of all mammal’s species found in South Africa. The Park is also South Africa’s oldest wildlife conservancy.

Fun fact: The Kruger Park is home to the Big Five, but did you know about the Little Five? They’re little animals that share parts of their names with the Big 5. They’re antlions, eastern rock elephant shrews, leopard tortoises, red-billed buffalo weavers and rhino beetles.

Jock Safari Lodge is a five-star luxury game lodge, and if you ever need a reason to escape Joburg, this is just the place. The lodge lies in complete privacy, hidden under statuesque trees. It can accommodate twenty-four people, and each room boasts a private plunge pool and day bed. You’ll fall asleep to the sounds of elephants trumpeting and wake up to the calls of hyenas. Your stay includes two game drives; one at 5:30am and one at 4pm, so you’ll be able to experience most of what the Kruger has to offer. Think Giant Eagle Owls, little Bird Eaters, baby civets, white tailed mongoose, roaring lions, leopards and cheetah. There are even exclusive roads and pathways specifically given to Jock guests, which means more exclusivity and luxurious game viewing.

54

We recommend booking a three-night stay and requesting a private dinner on the first night. You’ll wine and dine on a beautiful threecourse menu, under a twinkling sky. Expect freshly made creamy butternut soup with homemade bread to start, an ethically sourced trout fish (eyes and all) for main, and a mouth-watering malva pudding for dessert. Another recommendation - ask for Patrick, who is a fine game ranger. His passion for the bush is evident and he’ll elevate your authentic safari experience to five-star. Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Special! Planning a trip? Take advantage of Jock Safari Lodge’s latest package. Enjoy complete luxury at Main Jock Lodge for 3 consecutive nights, and receive a 10% discount. The offer is valid until the 14 December 2017, excludes Fitzpatrick’s Lodge and is not applicable to existing bookings. here do you go if you want a sense of balance? Where seamless farm regions and rolling hills blend into a harmonious dance. Where time stands still. Tomjachu Lodge is an adventure you’ll never forget. Tomjachu Lodge (pronounced tom-jac-hu) is situated inside a nature reserve and is only four hours outside of Jozi. The bush lodge is named after three brothers; Tom Jack and Hugo. This family-owned lodge exists all thanks to their grandfather, who left a legacy behind - one which Jack has gracefully accepted. Being owner run and managed is what makes this exquisite location exceptional. As you enter the grounds, you’re greeted by the bleats of zebra and become captive to Mpumalanga and all its riches. The hills are shaded by acacias and wattles of shrubs carpet the red soil. There are 265 bird species on this 500-hectare property, and 47 grass species too. The views appear infinite, and upon arrival, it’s crystal clear that this is where Mother Nature has done some of her greatest work.

Raw, authentic and oozing comfort, Tomjachu breathes relaxation. Ornate finishes, farm style architecture and natural colour palettes - this space has it all. Imported touches and furnishings from France enhance the atmosphere, and it’s rather remarkable how there’s a perfect balance between bush and bliss. The lodge is ideal anyone who wants to immerse themselves in wildlife; be it a family trip or romantic getaway. With space for twenty-four guests in total, choose between an exclusive self-catering rock cottage with its own plunge pool, or a bed and breakfast style room in the Homestead main house. The eye-catching Valbonne Villa boasts six bedrooms - all en-suite and all with views of the Mpumalanga foothills. There’s also the option of a private chef and the villa includes its own butler.

Relax on your stoep and marvel at the ostriches passing by, or get active with a walk in the reserve or a hike. There are three routes to choose form. We recommend trying the blue trail; about an hour long, it includes a knowledgeable guide who will introduce you to the flora, fauna, natural springs and animals in the area. There are no big five on the grounds, so you may encounter majestic giraffes or beautiful blesbok. Your stay is incomplete without an afternoon picnic on top of the mountains, where the only sounds you’ll hear are that of the Purplecrested turaco. Marvel at the fynbos and the African wattle while you munch on freshly made wraps. We also recommend you relish in a traditional bush dinner. Nestled by the fire with a pot of potjie, overlooking the luminous waters… you’ll want to get stuck in this moment forever. Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

OLD-WORLD

L

The hidden gem of Sandton

ooking for a little Cape country tranquillity nestled in the heart of bustling Sandton? Hello Joburgers, we’ve found it in the form of the gorgeous new venue, The Gables in Sandhurst, and you won’t be disappointed.

Words Victoria Taylor

The Gables has changed the game. Forget sleek metal and the sound of traffic – this venue is taking you back to a 17th century Western Cape homestead. Get your business done in the lap of old-world luxury, where peace and quiet reign. What began as a humble art gallery, home décor shop and rustic, country-style café has evolved, and now boasts breathtaking venues for small private events, corporate functions and offsite meetings – perfect for those seeking a little slice of serenity in the big city. The Gables Boardroom can

and catering partners to create a one-of-a-kind event that suits your needs and budget. The Hand Brew Café is the ideal spot for a birthday tea, bridal or baby shower or a business lunch. Suitable for up to 35 people, the Café serves divine coffee, freshly pressed juices and a variety of light lunches. You can also enquire as to whether there’s a ‘special menu’ available, and the Gables has a caterer available for larger crowds. Take a seat inside and gaze at the gorgeous Cape Dutch architecture, or look out over the gorgeous, impeccably kept gardens.

accommodate up to twelve executives and offers all the conferencing facilities you could need, including projector facilities, Wifi, stationery and white board facilities. There’s secure, off street parking and the venue caters for beverages and light lunches, thanks to their delightful on-site Café. Those who book the corporate package will also have use of the Business Lounge, and both of these rooms can be

booked for a half or full day. Adjacent to The Gables is The Barn – an exquisite, rustic, cobblestone paved venue that’s just perfect for corporate lunches and dinners, end of year functions and spectacular birthday parties. As you step through the bright green doors, you’re greeted by a sensory delight - fabulous décor and soft lightening. You can work with The Gables décor

Situated just five minutes away from the Sandton CBD, The Gables is as authentically Cape Dutch as possible, with all the original fittings. The moment you arrive, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to another time and another province. 23 Killarney Road, Sandton 5 www.thegables-sandton.com 1 072 237 6604 f @thegables.sandton @thegablessandton Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

hen Hugh Heffner, Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey is on your list of clientele, you’ve got to be a big deal. Event and wedding planner to the stars, Colin Cowie recently returned to his roots to speak to The SA School of Weddings – and us! “I had such a great time! It’s always good to speak to a very thirsty crowd of people,” said Colin about his first presentation on South African soil. The Wedding Specialist and The SA School of Weddings hosted Colin for a fantastic full day event at Fox Junction in Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg. A hot shot in the Big Apple, humble Colin grew up in Zambia before immigrating to the United States over 30 years ago. “Everything I do I’ve done it for South Africa. I’ve never forgotten my South African roots.”

Colin’s repertoire includes Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball and the world’s largest fireworks show – which is in the Guinness Book of Records! How did it all start? “I found in Hollywood, people had these fabulous homes, but they didn’t know how to entertain.” He says it’s all about how you make people feel welcome in your home. “I started doing parties, events and weddings. Eventually I did Hugh Heffner’s wedding – which kind of made me ‘Mr Wedding’, because the world’s most famous bachelor got married.”

ADRIENNE

HERSCH

Properties Pillar Awards W

ork hard and reward hard – that’s the ethos that inspires the annual Pillar Awards at Adrienne Hersch Properties.

Designed to celebrate the achievements of rising stars and individuals within the company, who have excelled and gone above and beyond the call of duty, the Pillar Awards recognise the people that make Adrienne Hersch Properties the successful company, and key player in the industry that it is today. Founder and CEO, Adrienne Hersch says that it’s also a celebration of the past year. “It’s an opportunity to come together and celebrate the success of our colleagues and our company. As we plough on all day, every day, taking a moment to stop and recognise the power of the collective effort of our great people is vital to our company ethos and future successes.” This year’s 5th annual Pillar Awards ceremony took place on 19 April at the suave Goliath & Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch. With entertainment from local funny guys Jason, Donovan and Nicholas Goliath, it was a memorable evening for AHP family, friends, stakeholders and media. Group success

Words Supplied

While the awards have a keen focus on the individuals, the event also paid homage to the company’s incredible achievements of 2016, especially in the midst of the country’s severe socio-economic challenges and political tug of war. This year’s notable achievements included the launch of the company’s first franchise in Ruimsig, and the unveiling of the Hersch Operating Management Experience - aka the HOME system; a cutting intranet system that give employees the edge with how they manage customer relationships. Adrienne closed the formalities with her trade-mark motivation. “We continue to achieve the impossible within the South African real estate landscape because of our reliance drive, determination and constant strive for innovation.” There’s no doubt the AHP family will have a variety of new milestones to celebrate at next year’s awards, so stay tuned!

And the winners were… The quarterly annual award ceremony considered the specific roles and abilities of each employee. Each category is significant to the overall success of the company. With learning and development a core focus at AHP, nurturing the future game-changers and leaders of the industry is paramount. It’s with this backdrop the Rookie of the Year and Most Improved and Promising Agents Awards are two categories that really stand out to position AHP’s bigger vision and commitment to the country. The Pillar Awards are fiercely contended, an indication of the hunger to succeed and personal motivation that drives the company’s work ethic. Make no mistake that this year’s winners had their work cut out – making it all the sweeter. On behalf of Hello Joburg, congrats to all the winners! Where did you grow up and what was that like?

I grew up in Bosmont, a small coloured neighborhood on the Westrand in Johannesburg. It was fun... I was a tomboy, so we spent all our school holidays outside, playing everything from soccer and cricket to riding bikes. The only rule was you had to be indoors before the streetlights came on.

What does it mean to be a South African to you?

It means being a go-getter because anything is possible. It means being colorful and unapologetically yourself, because we live in a country with such diversity and acceptance. I think we sometimes overlook it.

What made you decide to start ARENA Wellness?

I’ve always been passionate about health and fitness, and the concept of only having one body and looking after it. Being a physio, I get to see the wears and tears the human body goes through, and I appreciate the importance of it being the most valuable asset you have. My husband shares the same sentiment - we met in the wellness industry 9 years ago. We started ARENA Wellness because we felt there was a market for a boutique fitness studio, with a strong sense of client centered service, and a fun, team based environment.

How do you stay strong, fit and healthy?

Jantjes

A business woman and fitness guru, Saadia is the owner of ARENA Wellness and is extremely passionate about healthy living. She has a sport science degree and she’s studied physiotherapy. Both have influenced the way she sees health and the human body. Hello Joburg • July 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

What’s your biggest food move for 2017?

I received a Nutribullet for Christmas, so I’ve been enjoying the convenience of on-the-go smoothies, and drinks packed with a high nutrition content. For me, healthy convenience foods will be the move for 2017.

I love high intensity interval training in a group setting. It gives you great variety and challenges you. I also make time for running and strength training. I eat a generally low-carb diet and enjoy fruits and smoothies as my snacks. But I also believe in rewarding your body, so I can’t say no to ice-cream!
