Candida Mosoma Leads a South African cast in Sister Act From July 10th

Bernard Jay, Executive Producer for Joburg Theatre of Sister Act - the biggest musical in Joburg this year - is proud to announce the stellar South African cast of the country’s première production of the feel-amazing musical comedy.

L

eading the cast will be Candida Mosoma as disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in the top grossing 1992 movie comedy of the same name.

“The role of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act is – arguably – the flashiest and most challenging written for a black female in recent musical theatre history,” says Bernard Jay. “It’s a star role for a star personality with star attitude. When Candida Mosoma walked into the audition room and started being Deloris from the first moment, we all knew we had found our star.” This brand new ‘non-replica’ production of the musical Sister Act will be directed by Janice Honeyman, with musical direction by Rowan Bakker, choreography by Nicol Sheraton, production design by Declan Randall, costume design by Sarah Roberts and sound design by Trevor Peters.

When the wimples start quivering, the pinched mouths break into sunbeam smiles, and the nuns start rocking to raise the Gothic rafters, all’s right in the kingdom of musical comedy - The New York Times

ABOUT CANDIDA MOSOMA

Joining Candida Mosoma, South African stage star Kate Normington will play Mother Superior (legendarily portrayed by Maggie Smith in the movie) and Keith Smith will play the pivotal role of Monsignor O’Hara.

Musical Theatre graduate and Naledi award winning actress Candida has received acclaim on South African stages with her diverse talents in an array of musicals, including Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King, Shaka Zulu The Musical and Dreamgirls.

Also cast are (in alphabetical order) Bjorn Blignaut, Caroline Borole, Vanessa Brierley, Caitlin Clerk, Anne-Marie Clulow, Elizca Coetzer, Judy Ditchfield, Toni Jean Erasmus, Trudy Fredericks, Germandt Geldenhuys, Zane Gillion, Clive Gilson, Themba January, Dolly Louw, Mervin Marvey, Noni Mkhonto, Phumi Mncayi, Dean Roberts, Brenda Sakellarides, Andrea Shine, Shelly Simon, Nqobile Sipamla, Lebo Toko, Carmen Tromp, L J Urbani, Natasha Van Der Merwe and Zano. Sister Act in Joburg will be a creative collaboration and celebration of South African talent. Multi-award-winning South African director and writer Janice Honeyman is on board to direct. “No-one in South Africa has proven herself to be in finer creative control of ‘non-replica’ mega-musical productions than Janice. No-one knows the magic possibilities of The Mandela stage like Janice,” says Bernard Jay. “I’m just so thrilled that she loves the show too and said yes!” Bernard Jay produces Sister Act for Joburg Theatre, with Simon James and Claire Pacariz as associate producers. Timothy Le Roux will serve as resident director. The wittilly infectious musical is written by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane, lyrics by Glenn Slater and music by Oscar and Tony winning composer Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, etc). The stage production premièred at the Pasadena Playhouse in California in 2006 and was produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment in London in 2009 - then on Broadway in 2011. The musical was nominated for four Olivier Awards in London, including Best New Musical, and five Tony Awards in New York, including Best Musical.

Candida has also displayed her talents in revue shows and cabarets as a very versatile singer in Let there Be Rock, Solouette, Hot Spots, Motown Magic, Sisters in Song, The Queen Experience (Amsterdam) - and most recently toured South Africa with the successful show Madame Zingara. Her television credits include being Rhythm City’s beloved Zodwa, cameo appearances on Sqwezas and Zabalaza - and reaching the ‘Top 18’ in South African Idols 2012. When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in one place the cops are sure she won’t be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood. Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act leaves audiences breathless. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, Sister Act is reason to rejoice! Sister Act is brought to South Africa by the City of Joburg in association with MNet and is on The Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre from July 10th to August 16th. H Tickets range from R200 – R350 and are exclusively available from www.joburgtheatre.com or by calling 0861 670 670. The custom built Sandton City now has a new addition. Set under the glittering 150-metre-long handmade chandelier that twinkles along virtually the entire length of the new ultra luxuryshopping walk, the celebration was hosted by Sandton City co-owners Liberty Group and Pareto Limited. The launch was wrapped in the dazzling cast of its coveted brands: Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Ermenegildo Zegna, Billionaire Italian Couture, Jimmy Choo, Tod’s, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada which boasts the biggest Prada boutique store in the world. A proud achievement. Designed by Roberto Baciocchi, the store is Hello Joburg • July 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

around eight hundred square meters of pure indulgence and has a stunning selection of handbags, purses, menswear and womenswear. In true lavish Sandton style the event was a major success as Lee Ann Dlamini sang sweet nothings and we all indulged in delicious canapés and sipped on bubbles. The addition is the perfect amenity to the already extravagant center. And with such a high standard of international brands, we can see exactly why Sandton City is in a league of its own. If the idea of shopping doesn’t appeal, the Champagne bar awaits your arrival. You can instead marvel at the appeal of the sheer beauty of the walk at the Arque Champagne Crescent. This crown jewel was crafted in a R185 million redevelopment project to fashion a stunning setting befitting of the world’s most coveted luxury retail brands with all the glamour of world-class shopping. The Rise and Rise of Luxury Brands in South Africa

G

lobally, the fashion industry is one of the largest industries in the world providing employment to countless people. What we see on the cover of magazines such as Vogue is the end product of a long process including conception, design and manufacturing providing employment every step of the way. With all the doom and gloom regarding the South African economy recently, it is quite refreshing to see the sudden boom in luxury brands coming into the country. There was a time when purchasing an item of designer clothing meant a costly trip overseas. We could only stare longingly at items coming down the runway. This is a great show of faith in the emerging SA fashion market. Recently, stores such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Louis Vuitton have either opened new branches or expanded in SA. Items from these designer labels may come with a hefty price tag but in a growing fashion market we need all sectors to be represented: this includes high-end fashion. So whether you’re looking to buy a new handbag or simply seeking some inspiration from the fashion gods, SA is now covered in terms of high-end fashion. We LuV Louis Vuitton!

From Nada to… Prada

Finding ourselves surrounded by elegant wing back chairs, top end fashion and a fine fragrance whilst munching on marvelous macaroons, sipping on GM&Ahrens vintage cuvee Cap Classique it was time we got this partea started. The Day Birget et Mikkelsen clothing is beautiful and charming but more importantly so on trend. The new Bvlgari le gemme fragrance is intoxicating, mysterious and yet still ultra feminine. Swoon! Of course we indulged in perfectly manicured salmon sandwiches (crust free we might add) and we were all reduced to fits of laughter as we indulged in the afternoons spoils. Hyde Park Corner certainly provided the quintessential high tea experience and graced all who attended. H

dining out SEARCHING FOR THE BEST CURRY IN JOZI? The wait is over Joburgers! Unless you already know Aarya…

T

here are two things we envy about Durbanites; one being their nonexistent winter and the other being their spicy curries and bunny chows. The people of Durban can experience all of this whilst the sounds of an idyllic Indian Ocean, wash against their shores so it’s safe to say we’re a little green with envy. We try not digress into preference of scenery because at the end of the day, good food is why you’re reading this. So in pursuit of Durban’s meaty heat, we found ourselves inside Tsogo Sun’s famed Aarya Restaurant at the Montecasino Piazza. It isn’t five hundred and fifty kilometres away, so it’s worth the drive any day.

Tsogo Sun so you know it’s curried perfectly. See what we did there? LOL! On a serious note though, Aarya’s zest for life can be found in its story… The restaurant contractually forms part of the prize which Deena Naidoo won in 2012 so it’s no surprise that he took the lead by redesigning it to suit his standards and renaming it after his young daughter (Aarya meaning favourable and honourable in Sanskrit – is also the respectful way to address women). So it’s the perfect place for girls, boys and everyone in between.

“An award-wining mild curry served with Jeera Basmati rice that continues to be the best-selling dish on the menu.

Do you remember when MasterChef SA first hit our television screens in 2012 and Deena Naidoo was crowned the winner from eight thousand hopefuls? Of course you do because, MasterChef is said to be "the biggest food-related television show worldwide" being produced and screened in over forty countries since its inception in 2005 by UK chefs, John Torode and Gregg Wallace. Sidebar: John Torode himself will be at the TicketPro Dome Deena Naidoo showed us that high flavour from 23 – 26 July for The Good Food and Wine profiles can be incorporated into classic meals Show!!! Our very own www.gohello.co.za has without losing taste buds throughout his season all the info for you to know why to go. on MasterChef. So of course his first restaurant wouldn’t be any different – if anything it would The point of our rhetorical question is that Deena Naidoo co-owns Aarya Restaurant with better. Take his Butter Chicken for example.

“An award-wining mild curry served with Jeera Basmati rice” that continues to be the bestselling dish on the menu. Or his Lamb Curry which also isn’t shy of excitement. It is perfectly seasoned and even suppler off the bone. Aarya will have you licking your lips like LL Cool J in the 90’s. It is said that supreme skills, an undying dedication to spiciness and patience for flavour maketh a curry! We are firm believers after trying Aarya’s savoury and succulent prawn curry. Simple and sophisticated, this dish is more memorable than the rest because the fresh prawns are marinated overnight. In cumin, coriander, cardamom, oil, turmeric and curry powder. It’s a recipe for elation! The dish is served with Basmatic rice flavoured in cumin seeds, garlic and butter. But trust us when we say that your plate won’t be dripping in oil like the definitive Durban curries we’re nostalgic of. These are more chic and contemporary. They are perfectly piquant because they’re prepared with precision. Provoking your palettes by giving your plate the pizzazz it desires! chef of the month Chef Edward Khumalo from Remos Maximilliano Fratelli restaurant

B

ringing the culinary world together and celebrating food is the chef at Remo’s Fratelli Maximilliano restaurant at Waterfall Corner- Edward (Steady Eddy) Khumalo. Helming his own kitchen and helping build a restaurant empire, chef Eddy is passionate, inspirational and is full of zealous. There is something quite special about a man who loves what he does and who is constantly aiming at progressing and perfecting his craft. As Executive Chef of the restaurant group, Eddy cooks, eats and sleeps Italian and let it be known his blood type is caffeine. When I asked Eddy where this love came from for Italian cuisine he exclaimed that it came from Renzo’s (the owner of Remos) mother, because we know Italians love their mamma! Eddy started at Remo’s in 2007 as head barman. He made the top 10 finals of the KZN barista championships for two consecutive years and firmly put Remo’s coffee on the map in Durban.

“Cooking with love provides food for the soul” From managing the bar he moved into managing the front of house and his affection and passion for creating good Italian food resulted into a final move to the kitchen. Initially he didn’t identify with food or understand food and so it was either sink or swim. Guess which one he chose! Eddy sais that the moment he realized this this is what he was suppose to be doing was when he became good at what he loved- being a chef. Cooking was natural, it was organic, it was embedded deep inside his veins and so his gastronomic adventure began. Renzo guided and steered Eddy and the most

pivotal thing he taught him was always to offer a solution. Renzo taught him to simplify an issue, instead of focusing on that issue, rather focus on a solution and thus Eddy realized what the epicenter of his happiness was-food. Growth generally happens when you take someone out of their comfort zone and Remos leant itself to the growth of chef Eddy who has a big heart and a full-size palette. Because Eddy’s focus is to construct memories and to reawaken childhood moments, his food is one that tells a story. The signature dish at the restaurant is the Chicken Assaggi. Gorgeous and succulent grilled chicken breast, cloaked with wood fire roasted vegetables, peppadew, pine nuts and feta pesto and heavenly zucchini fries all enveloped in a balsamic reduction. The peppadew and feta pesto is unique to Remos and once you become a regular you too will notice the unique touches, the extra special drops that

make each dish magnifique. Another beloved dish is the River Café Pasta. Tender peeled prawn tails sautéed with zucchini, white wine, tomato paste, mint, chili and a light cream finished with Italian parsley and tossed with Linguini, its one big party for your taste buds. “ I love food, I love simple food and although it is possibly some of the hardest work, everyday in the kitchen is challenging, exciting and rejuvenating.” Chef Eddy is the perfect ingredient to the Remo’s brand and it is easy to see why Eddy has such a connection with Remo’s and its food, it is because its all about family, about connection, about authenticity and we cannot wait for the sister store to open in Sandton City Shopping Centre around November. It couldn’t possibly get any more electrifying right? Wrong! Every month the hotel is offering a culinary feast- last month focusing on food offerings from the Middle East. We were delighted to be invited to explore the oneNINEone Restaurant and also experience the hotel. Known as the ‘sensation of Johannesburg’ the restaurant boasts a modern, stylish and elegant ambience, exquisitely tailored with fine lines and contemporary touches. A stand out is the beautiful Jacardanda art works that frame the restaurant. Assessing the menu, you notice a variety of scrumptious treats. Impossible to just pick one. So we opted for more of a tapas feel with home-made hummus (one of the best we have ever tasted), traditional Mousakaha, Warek Enab which are the beloved vine leaves stuffed with rice and vegetables and the most tender spiced lamb loin served with oriental rice, green beans and crunch pine nuts. Mouth watering! With a push, we had to re-engage our bellies and have the halva ice cream, and are we glad we did. This dessert is packed with pure goodness and its velvety texture and creamy juiciness lend itself to seconds. The bad news is that the Middle Eastern Food experience has come to an end however the good news is that there will be many more exciting food journeys at the hotel every month offering a menu that is reflecting of an inspired country. Just another special touch complementing the restaurants African flair. And why not opt for a night stay too? There is no better treat than escaping up the lift after dinner to enter your hotel room, especially when your stay is made more personal at the regency Club level. Turning the science of beauty into a thriving business Gareth Cliff swears by Christina Bowman. So does Gert-Johan Coetzee and Louise Carver. These celebrities are just a few of the Joburg men and women who have standing appointments at Pure Esthetics in Parkmore, one of the northern suburbs’ best-kept secrets. We sat down with Christina to find out what makes her so special? How did you end up in the aesthetics industry?

It was really my own quest for beautiful skin that led me to working in this industry. When I was in my late 20s we immigrated to Australia as a family, and when I went for a facial, my education started right there. The therapist asked me what sun care I used and I replied that I’d never really bothered with that since my olive skin was already quite oily. I’d always battled with hormonal pigmentation, especially after my daughter’s birth. The therapist was horrified, and would not treat me further unless I took precautions against sun damage. And you brought those learnings back to South Africa?

Africa in 2008, and I cemented an agreement to distribute a brilliant skin-care range called Alpha-H in South Africa. I’d discovered it while in Australia, and loved it so much that I’d sought the owner out and had been working for them. Back in SA I distributed Alpha-H and eventually started offering treatments from my home – then it flourished and in 2012 I took the plunge and opened Pure Esthetics.

What are the most hi-tech tools for skin-care?

Do you have a particular focus?

It may seem so obvious, but so many people still don’t take enough care in the sun, and it’s not only about preventing skin cancer… it causes prematurely aged skin and pigmentation.

We do offer a variety of treatments, from specialised brow-shaping and lash extensions, to pain-free hair removal, cellulite treatments and Botox, but my speciality is dealing with acne, pigmentation and anti-ageing

On Saturday 13 June 2015, the spa, in association with Mrs. South Africa, held a fun day in aid of the Ark Animal Centre. As a team of animal lovers, choosing our charity for the day was a nobrainer and having spent a day there interacting with the dogs and puppies, we were even more convinced about what a fantastic cause we had selected.

towards the organization while taking moment to interact with the community and get to know our neighbors and patients. I could not possibly imagine a life without my own four fur-children and I felt that it was so important to provide an opportunity for equally worthy pooches to find a good, loving home. As a surgeon, I have the opportunity to help people each day but there is something so humbling about helping those who cannot speak for themselves.

The day was a huge success and we were able to raise a hearty donation

We would like to thank those who took the time to allow us to introduce ourselves as a team and especially to the many who so kindly opened their homes to a four-legged friend on the day. I would like to encourage all readers to visit the Ark Animal Centre and lend a helping hand!

A less invasive hair removal option Crystal Clear Skincare Clinic in Parkwood now offers Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal (IPL). It’s not a fancy way to say “laser”. It’s actually a slightly different process. Laser hair removal has to be specifically adapted to your type of skin and hair colour while IPL has a far more diverse offering and doesn’t only work on a single wave length (like laser). So it is relatively effective no matter the skin or hair colour. IPL utilises Square Pulse Light which is a type of photo lifting

treatment. The light is filtered to remove Infrared and Ultraviolet wave lengths. The light then targets the pigment which causes all the actively growing hair in the area to fall out around 2 weeks after treatment. Enough with the “tech talk.” I had one underarm treated with IPL. The process took all 5 minutes and was relatively pain free (comparative to 4 or 5 pin pricks). I saw a remarkable difference in the hair growth over the weeks that followed and, a month on, the hair growth on

the treated pit is noticeably less than the other following shaving. You need to budget for 3 to 6 treatments at between R500 and R525 per treatment for permanent hair removal. IPL can also be used for skin rejuvenation and is far less invasive than needling - so may be a good option for those adverse to pain. arts&culture Q&A Hellog Jobur

n a l l i u g e P c i r Ayme with

Co-owner & Manager

of The Orbit

South African Jazz has never been the same since March 2014 when The Orbit opened its’ doors to Johannesburg (and the rest of the world of course). Better known to musicians and patriots as the Home of Jazz, The Orbit is open 6 days a week from 5pm – 2am on Tuesdays to Thursdays and from 1pm – 2am on Fridays to Sundays. With a variety of live performances every night, our appreciation and perception of African performances has shifted completely. But all too often, we hear people complain about the “high prices”, the arbitrary hours, the one-sidedness of booking Jazz muso’s as opposed to Kwaito stars and the silence required during the shows. So we’ve highlighted these observations in order to magnify the beauty of The Orbit. It is usually our imperfections which make our light shine even brighter so here you have it Joburgers, Aymeric Péguillan, the co-owner and manager of The Orbit – Home of Jazz answering our grappling questions: What distinguishes The Orbit from all the other live music venues in Johannesburg? The Orbit is an art performance space first and foremost and it is dedicated to the promotion of Jazz music, both South African and international. It showcases universal music, and is always a peaceful gathering that brings a lot of different people together in terms of origins, social environment, age and gender, in a multi-cultural city of note. The Orbit is a platform for established and young artists alike, where musical projects blossom and new collaborations are born. The artists are the VIPs here, this is Home for Jazz musicians. It also, on occasions, crosses over to other genres of improvised music. What makes The Orbit special is that the majority of patrons come to listen to great music in a classy and sophisticated venue that still remains simple and relevant.

The Orbit registers itself in the legacy of famous past Johannesburg club such as Kippies and Bassline and wants to rival with the best Jazz clubs in the world. 36

It takes time to build a live music venue to get the general public, and not just the avid jazz lovers, to come and appreciate good art, especially when so may have pre conceptions about Jazz. But believe me, we have already converted a few to the beauty and the uniqueness of Live Jazz. We want to provide exceptional memories of creative processes. We are strating to notice an impact on the jazz scene in terms of new creations and collaborations.

L. RON HUBBARD HERITAGE SITE

People sometimes forget that artists also have to eat. What do you make of the notion that paying R80 – R150 for entrance (alone) is too much?

In late 1960, L. Ron Hubbard traveled from his home at Saint Hill Manor for an extended stay in Johannesburg. The fully restored residence houses displays that tell of L. Ron Hubbard’s visit to South African prisons and the criminal reform programs he initiated, his lectures to South African Scientologists and his pioneering work in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). RECEIVE A FREE EDUCATIONAL CD WHEN YOU VISIT DURING JUly 40 Hannaben Street, Johannesburg 011 0540 540 or 081 306 8227 www.lronhubbard.org/heritage-sites

In recent years, with the absence of good live music venues for Jazz, it has become a habit not to pay for music when you go to a restaurant or a club. It’s a nightmare for musicians! We find it strange that many can pay R200 to go to the movies, to the theatre or a concert at the Dome, but can be reluctant to pay for Live Music of the highest quality in a club setting. At the end of the day, we want to pay these artists as best we can and by supporting this venue in a regular fashion. In fact, listening to quality music is quite cheap in Joburg if compared to European, Asian or American cities where cover charges can go up to R1000 for a club gig in a major venue.

Lao Tzu once said “Silence is a source of great strength”. How much do you, and The Orbit agree with this quoted philosophy?

Mzansi Gallery We are a fresh new gallery with mostly new artists, still making their names – all, on a journey through life – a conscious journey to create and manifest beauty – through their work and how they live. 12a 7th Street, Melville 011 482 8292 info@mzansi.gallery www.mzansi.gallery T @mzansigallery f https://www.facebook.com/ mzansigallery

arts & culture

Is it safe to say that it may take a few years before we see a shift in people’s routines to accommodate for home-grown talent to sell out shows?

Of course, there is no greater love than showing respect for artists when they perform and we strongly encourage that. There is time for enjoying your wine and food, and there is time to value the great musicianship of these artists who give us a lot when they come on stage. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, one that enriches everyone. Most people would not think of talking inside the Theatre or at the movies when they have paid and we feel this very reason should anchor live music venues.

What is your vision for The Orbit a year or five years from now? Our main mission is to promote great quality South African Jazz music locally and internationally. For us, the most important objective is to be recognized as a venue that values the Jazz genre and those who perform it. Provide artists with a quality environment that attracts quality audiences. What matters is to find consistency on a daily basis. In closing, it’s safe to say that The Orbit has made significant headway in changing the perception and experience of Jazz in Johannesburg. With phenomenal music, great food, safe and secure parking on Juta Street as well as a sound vision – not even our Presidents policies could stop the motion in Orbit! The Orbit has recently installed a top-of-the-range generator to ensure the “show must go on!” H 81 De Korte Street, Johannesburg 011 339 6645 www.theorbit.co.za

You love Joburg because… The urban feel, the Arts, the people coming from all over the world to a central point. The History that speaks bold to all those that visits Joburg daily. I can go on and on about this city life.

What have you learnt about yourself during your journey as an Indie artist? The biggest lesson was to trust myself. Most mistakes made could have been avoided if I just trusted my judgement. I have realized that nothing comes easy, we all have to work hard to success. No short routes to victory.

What’s new and exciting about your latest projects? The New music written revolves around life and all that it has to give. The great part about this project as an indi artist is that I am free to write from the soul rather than from a specific commercial angle. At this point, Its all about Arts and Expression.

How do you begin to write a song? Mostly I would jam on the guitar then share sketch with production team for review and approval. Then we build from there. Sometimes its the feeling that build the song, being joy, pride and regret that would shape the melody before we even strum the chords.

If you had to choose three people to have dinner with dead or alive, who would they be? Amy Winehouse because I believe she has not yet told her full story and it would be an honor to finish her life story conversation with her. Brenda Fassie because she is just a huge legend that has gone through life at its best. She words of wisdom about the South African Music industry is all that would matter. Mmusi Maimane … #Epic

Who is your biggest inspiration? Jonathan Butler – His road to success and humble personality is incredible. Trevor Noah work ethic is also an inspiration indicating that the sky is the limit to workaholics.

Local music is unstoppable because… Because it is fresh, unique and diverse. I believe the next international superstar is born is South Africa, its just a matter of time.

Who is your celeb crush? Mini Dlamini and Bonang Matheba .. Zama Jobe.... OMG secrets are now coming out!! Hello Joburg • July 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

motoring It’s cold, I know! Hopefully I can entertain you long enough to forget about the chill, spike your excitement and inspire you to by a new car? Just as the temperature plummeted, the arrival of new cars increased: the refreshed KIA Picanto, the out of the box Crossover from Citroën, the Cactus and sculptural Lexus midsized SUV, the NX, which is endorsed by Will.i.am. Lexus’s mobile sculpture

Citroën Cactus

You know this car is cool when it is endorsed by music icon, Will.i.am. I can watch the TV commercial for the NX over and over. It’s unique. Different from other car commercials, and echo’s the voice of who the brand is targeting and evolving into - the trend leaders.

Interesting name for a car, isn’t it? More than a unique name, the Citroën C4 Cactus is named after a desert succulent. And for good reason: like the succulent, the Citroën has been designed to survive and protect itself within its inhabited environment, while requiring little liquid fuel to survive - a claimed meagre 4.6l/100km.

Visually the NX is like the TV commercial, it’s unique. It’s a hybrid of a well sized family SUV (sport utility vehicle) and a sexy coupe looking SAC (sport activity coupe) - think of a two in one X3 and X4 BMW, only better looking. Every panel of the car’s surface is chiselled, moulded and artfully conceived. The NX Lexus is designed to stand out from the crowd, doing so in a confidently understated manor.

The Cactus enters the fastest growing segment in the South African automotive market, the compact SUV/Crossover market. This segment is dominated by the likes of Nissan’s Juke, FORD’s EcoSport and the KIA’s Soul.

The cabin interior carries the same sentiment: two-tone leather seats (the most comfortable in the business), Kevlar detailing, smoked metal surrounds and leather wrapped everything with glorious exaggerated stitching. Lexus product are synonymous for being well spec’d unlike their German rivals. New to Lexus, a turbocharged engine - a welcome arrival. The turbo in the 200t is mated to a 2.0, 4-cylinder unit. The result, an impressive 175kW and a back planting 350N.m of torque. This gives you a 0-100km/h dash in smidge over 7 seconds in the all-wheel drive chassis. Fuel consumption figures are claimed to be a fare 9.5l/100km - a figure I got nowhere near. The Lexus NX range begins at R539 900. The vehicle on test and my choice within the range, is the R579 900 EX model. The top of the range 300h EX is priced to go at R633 000. These price tags are inclusive of a four year/100 000 km service/maintenance plan.

This is why: Citroën have created a light weight body. The car weighs approx. 1 000kg, give or take 55kg depending on the model, which in car terms is ridiculously light. Think an Olsen twin after a strict diet. Other cars in this class are between 250kg to 350kg heavier - even a Fiat 500 is heavier! Hello Joburg • July 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

2 motoring

The front of the car is modern with a futuristic edge - the sides are unlike any other - featuring Airbump® pads that protect the car from minor bumps or scratches. These Airbump® pads, which feature all around the car come standard in black, but are available in other colours at an additional cost. The heart of the Cactus is an incredible pliable PureTech 1.2 e-THP engine. This engine offers fantastic acceleration that beguiles its petit capacity. Coupled with its featherweight body, means at almost any speed, or any of the Cactus’s five gears, the Cactus wants to go. 0-100 km/h arrives in just over 9 seconds, with nice levels of torque available throughout the engines rev range. The Cactus is available now: priced from R225 000 for the 60kW FEEL, R260 000 for the 81kW FEEL and R285 000 for the top of the range, C4 Cactus 1.2 PureTech Turbo e-THP 81kW SHINE.

KIA Picanto - when less is actually more This compact city slicker is more than just a great bargain buy, for which it has been awarded the title, People’s Wheels Awards for three years in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013). It’s also won numerous ‘Best Buy’ accolades from multiple major publications. We live in an age of ongoing change. We want: better, faster and cheaper. front bumper, which function as daytime running lights. The front bumper has been designed to look as if it incorporates a front spoiler, contributing to a youthful sporty vibe. On the inside, the Picanto’s dashboard has a more modern facia surrounding the audio system. Noteworthy interior endowments are most notably the Picanto’s list of impressive standard features: airconditioning, retractable dual cup holders and sun visors with vanity mirrors, as well as AUX/ iPod/USB connections for the radio/CD player with MP3 compatibility.

KIA have a winning formula with their Picanto. It’s a global success, they have great sales from it and been handsomely acclaimed too. So, why fiddle with a winning formula? Its half way through its life, that’s why! So, just like a starlet from Hollywood, the Picanto went in for some work, enhancements if you will - albeit very subtle.

In manual guise, the Picanto 1.0 LX retails for R136 995, and the range topping 1.2 EX for R149 995. Automatic transmission is available on both derivatives for an additional R12 000. All derivatives ship as standard with a five year/150 000km warranty. A two year/45 000km optional service plan is also available.

The exterior’s most obvious features are new front and rear bumpers and a revised ‘tiger nose’ grille. New fog lamp housings have been added to the

Joburgers, this is a great first-time car. If you’re economising and simplify things in your life, you won’t feel it in this playful wellequipped city car either.

Hello Joburg • July 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

We headed out in the Ford Fiesta ST just to see what this vehicle is really made of. It promises a Horsepower of 252 HP and has a 2L 4-cylinder engine. Sleek, stylish and ever so graceful this vehicle is pleasantly distractive. Taking this beauty on a spin down to Durban for the weekend ensured a signature driving experience, one that was not merely there to create the ambience but rather to generate the adventure. As beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside, it is built for speed and agility. This car glides with precision in the fast lane. It takes corners like a pro and handles with a majestic grace. This car is a major victory for Ford. With its turbocharged direct-injection 2.0L EcoBoost engine delivers 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque for a purely exhilarating performance. It has high-performance front and rear disc brakes, which are geared for speed and a high octane for stopping power. Talking about speed the seats are designed for rapidity, for speediness, for swiftness and are custom- designed specifically for the ST. The seats hug you firmly, they envelope you tight as you venture on the ride of your life! Although it will take a monstrous beast to pry you away from this stunner, she is certainly worth marveling at. She has an interior with a bad attitude, aluminum pedals, cloth sport seats with ST logo, a new, flat-bottom, leather-wrapped steering wheel with ST badging and available heat and the crème de la crème a beautiful leathertrimmed and alloy-appearance gear shift knob. Her exterior beauty is contemporary yet innovative and she has curves in all the right places. Turn in carefully and prepare to be wowed with the Ford Fiesta ST because rewinding is not an option!

Welcome to Hipsterdom…

Anton Odendaal from leading furniture retailer, Rochester, offers the lowdown on how to hipster-out your living space.

F

rom skinny jeans, hand-knitted cardigans, craft beer and a distinct love affair with anything in a mason jar – you can spot a hipster from a mile away! Although there is no doubt that these bearded, hair-knotted individuals have honed their look for the outside world to see, the question remains, how is the hipster style affecting things behind closed doors? The reality is that hipsters are having a major influence on home décor trends, and it is really turning out to be a positive and creative one. Anton Odendaal from leading furniture retailer, Rochester, says: “Adding some hipster style to your home is a definite way of keeping it on trend, current and invitingly creative. What’s really lovely about this particular style trend, is that it is quite easily and affordably achieved, and in essence, the décor remains intrinsically about who you are and what you like, instead of merely following trends.” He offers the following tips on how to infuse you living space with some oh-so-trendy hipster bravura:

1.) Select items carefully: Don’t buy for the sake of buying – rather choose pieces that mean something to you. A few carefully selected pieces of furniture that you utterly adore can make a far bigger statement than cluttering your space up with everything you own. Only include items you connect with, whether it be sentimentally or aesthetically, and choose items harmonise best with the overall look. 2.) Go retro: In hipster culture, retro is always cool – there is always room for ‘50s-inspired décor such as checkered flooring and diner-inspired furniture. Rochester’s Alica occasional chairs for example, can be used to create attractive and comfortable ‘50s-inspired seating in any hipster home. 3.) Industrial inspiration: Any

kind of interior space or item that was formerly used for industrial purposes is hipster heaven. Even if furniture is not strictly speaking industrial, but it boasts small elements that hint at the more industrial aspects of design, they will add to the integrity of the overall vision. The Bolt range

from Rochester for example, are made from dark distressed timber, and feature raw steel corner detailing and turnbuckle supports for true industrial inspiration.

4.) Relax and unwind: Hipster

décor is all about the big “chillax”. In order to create spaces that will invite you to unwind, sprawl out and get comfy, there will always be an abundance of pillows, blankets, rugs and beanbags in any hipster abode worth its salt. Hand-knitted cotton poofs or including a variety of scatter cushions, such as those available from Rochester, are ideal for creating a space that is warm and comfy.

5.) Display your interests: Find a way of incorporating your favourite things into the décor. For example, in the form of mounted vinyl record covers of your favourite singers and bands to show what music you love, will add volumes of hipster character to your home. For more information and to find a nearest Rochester store visit their website, www.rochester.co.za. Hello Joburg • July 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country.

The Protea Hotel Balalaika S

ituated on Maude Street – known as the Wall Street of Africa – the hotel is right in the heart of the city. It is ideally located just three minutes away from the Sandton Gautrain Station which connects guests to OR Tambo International Airport in just 15 minutes. The Balalaika is also just 300 m from Sandton City Shopping Centre, the Sandton Convention Centre and Nelson Mandela Square, all of which can be accessed by the hotel’s free shuttle service. Despite it being located in the midst of Johannesburg’s business Mecca, The Balalaika offers a serene and relaxing environment

for those searching for a sanctuary, with two crystal clear pools, beautiful rose bush-filled gardens, and an abundance of bird life. The Balalaika Hotel has been fulfilling Joburgers’ needs for an amazing 66 years. The hotel was established in 1948 as a tea garden in a quaint country house, and in 1949 it was officially established as a hotel. As part of the history of Johannesburg, it seems that almost everyone has their own story about the Balalaika. As a result, the hotel is a sort of heritage site filled with memories, a rich cultural history, and an impressive legacy.

There is even a mini museum inside its corridors, bursting with reminders of the influential people who have visited the hotel, including Steve Zachary (who recorded his album inside the hotel), Sir Richard Branson (who dropped by and signed a bottle of wine as a memento of his visit), and Gerard le Grand, who founded the Balalaika. Now progressing towards the future, the hotel is constantly evolving. An ongoing refurbishment programme has enabled The Balalaika to offer the most modern facilities, such as free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a business centre, and state

of the art conferencing facilities (which can hold a maximum of 300 people). The Bull Run Restaurant (in existence for 14 years), offers first-class service and food. The restaurant ages its own meat and there is even a master in-house butcher to provide only the freshest of meat. The restaurant also blends its own red and white wines, which is just another personal touch that gives the Balalaika that extra sparkle. For reservations, contact 011 322 5000, or email reservations@balalaika.co.za. For more information, visit www.proteahotels.com/balalaika
