Hello Joburgers, I’m about to get real honest here... you see, Father’s Day has never been ‘big’ in my house. I lost my father at a young age, so we don’t really feel the need to celebrate the day. Instead, we shower my mum with gifts twice in the space of two months because she took on the role as dad, as well as mum.

I’ve always considered my older brother to be the ‘father figure’ in my life. He taught me how to ride a bike, how to kick his butt at computer games and how to drive. Although I disliked him greatly as a child, I like to think he instilled a lot of his great character traits within me, and helped mould me into the young lady I am today. Six months ago he became a father for the first time, and gave us a reason to celebrate the day we used to shy away from. Fatherhood suits him – sorry, but I’ve just got to gush a bit there!

MEMORABLE From the dark wood panelling, mirrors and red upholstery, to the black and white checked floors and intricately pressed ceilings, slipping back to the 1920’s is highly possible.

What can only be described as one of Sandton’s most well-known restaurants, the Maximillien is a stalwart of fine dining at its best. Floor to ceiling windows allow in soft natural light during the day, and create a picturesque view for evening dining. Located in the bustling heart of Sandton, with easy access from Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City, this is the place to go if you are looking for great food, attentive service and the gentle, melodic strains of a live piano in the background. Behind the scenes, Chef Sylvester Nair keeps the engines churning in the kitchen, as dishes (filled with love and passion) pour out of its doors. Open six days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the team at the Maximillien know how to keep things interesting and diverse. The menu, which has just been released, is an amazing combination of flavours and an interesting take on French and New York cuisines… all succinctly combined to present one with a dining experience like no other. Chef Sylvester places his own touch on the dishes. Think nasturtium garnishes, jasmine flavoured pearls, and rice coloured with squid ink to give a different spin on a traditional side dish.

Amazing flavours, taste combinations and stylish plate presentation are to be expected when eating here. Beaming smiles and the feeling that you’ve somehow switched off from the hustle and bustle of the city, are just some of the reasons that make it well worth the visit. Growing up in Verulam, north of Durban, Chef Sylvester was around food from a young age. His father and grandmother were chefs, and he recalls his father taking him in to the kitchen to show him the hospitality industry - in what he suspects was an attempt to ‘knock it out of him’. To be honest, we’re very glad that it didn’t! After completing his studies, Chef Sylvester worked at some of the top restaurants in Cape Town and Durban, before heading through to join the team at the Davinci Hotel. A dry sense of humour and a wicked laugh make Chef Sylvester an absolute treat. His clear pride and joy in every dish he creates is something to behold. He admits he loves to make people happy, and he speaks through his food – when he sees people enjoying their meal and having a fantastic dining experience, it truly makes him happiest. The kitchen team make sure to source the best, freshest products available to them, and many of the dishes are slow cooked to ensure they are served at their most tender. For example, the braised lamb neck slowly cooks for 12 hours, until it’s literally falling off the bone, and the buttermilk marinated squid tentacles were so delicious, we almost ordered another plate to share. Pastry chef David is Chef Sylvester’s protégé. His desserts are already out of this world – so make sure you sample the brie white chocolate volcano. Trust us, it is delicious! An ‘any occasion’ type of restaurant, the Maximillien certainly comes highly recommended. From family brunch to a business meeting or even a romantic dinner, you’re certainly sorted at this beautifully appointed spot.

he Hobart Grove Shopping Centre has an upmarket mix of well-loved old and new tenants, in the newly revamped shopping centre at the corner of Grosvenor and Hobart Road in Bryanston. One of the popular favourites of Hobart Grove is Wombles Steakhouse. Expect a showcase of the best of what South Africa has to offer, with an emphasis on superb, quality beef and venison. The tender, juicy steaks (fillet, rump, sirloin, T-bone, prime rib), as well as fish and poultry are justifiably famous here. However, it’s the highly personalised service that puts Wombles in a league of its own as far as steakhouses go. Other restaurants include Delhi Dharbar, Simply Asia, Perron, Junipa’s and Fruits and Roots. Perron restaurant was started by four friends who love Mexican food, tradition and culture. They wanted to create a fun and inviting space that would keep customers returning. Expect a unique Thai dining experience at Simply Asia. With food prepared by authentic Thai chefs from the Land of Smiles, and a menu packed full of delicious dishes, it will satisfy any palate. Delhi Dharbar restaurant provides the finest authentic Indian foods from the North and middle of India, while Junipa’s has become a culinary hub, offering an all-day café, artisan bakery and coffee roaster, and its Evening Dinner Bistro, by showcasing a selected menu featuring the Chef ’s Choice Dishes. The latest addition is Rockets Bryanston - which opens soon and is set to change the face of dining. There’s a rooftop garden, a private dining room for intimate gatherings, Lolita’s Bar and Lounge for any occasion, a Ladies Champagne Lounge and a Gent’s Cognac Lounge. here do we start? The finger-licking good food? The on trend décor? The ‘come right in’ atmosphere? Hello Joburgers, if good food is your life, you should have a standing reservation at Lima Tapas Bar in Montecasino.

You’ll be greeted with a smile downstairs, before being ushered up into foodie heaven. The lights are low, the tables and chairs are all wood and leather, and the bar is lit up like a thirst-quenching beacon. The décor is trendy, the staff friendly and fun – it’s a winner all round. The sheer variety of Latin American fusion food will quicken your breath, but calm down - you can do this. The dishes are designed to be shared after all. Although, we wouldn’t judge if you didn’t. From traditional tacos, fresh ceviche and lobster rolls to (get this) Sushi Burgers! That’s right, delicious salmon, fresh avocado, red cabbage and heaps of mayo sandwiched between two cakes of rice, and topped with sesame seeds. These are a definite must-try!

We opted to be greedy and order all at once, asking for dishes to be served when they were ready. First to arrive was the Pork Empanadas – perfect little pastry parcels packed with juicy meat. Three portions per plate, so feel free to fight over that last one. Next, we dived into a Platos Pequeños (small plate) of pork ribs, topped with fresh micro tatsoi. These morsels were so juicy, so perfectly basted in a sweet, sticky sauce, that we were still licking our fingers when our mountain of nachos arrived. Crisp tortilla chips smothered in cheese and chicken mince, with guacamole, cream Mexicana and salsa on the side. Every couple of mouthfuls, you get smacked with a little hit of nacho spice – and it is divine!

Then the sushi arrived… and we had our first glimpse of that infamous Sushi Burger. Needless to say, it didn’t disappoint. Be warned, you’ll need a knife and fork for this one. We tucked into Maki, Sashimi and Roses… but the Salmon was the real winner. It tasted so fresh, you’d be forgiven for thinking it had hopped out the water and straight onto your plate.

Don’t be surprised if you have to roll out of there. We did – with humongous grins on our faces!

Now, we paired this feast with a chilled glass of Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc, but the drinks menu at Lima is just as varied as their food selection. Cocktails, stellar gins, rums and whiskeys… they’ve got it all! They’ve even got some cigars to go with it. For dessert, we highly recommend the Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Cake. Need we say more?

Uitkyk 10-Year-Old Grand Reserve Brandy

f you’re going to drink brandy, you’ve got to do it right. Forget the brandy and cokes – we’ve found you a new favourite…

Launch date: December 2016 How it’s made: The brandy is distilled, matured and bottled on the idyllic and historic Stellenbosch Wine Estate. It’s made from the finest selection of Chenin Blanc, Cinsaut and Clairette Blanche grapes. The base wine is double distilled in batches, using 1800 litre Savalle potstills imported from France in the late 1940s. The smaller pots and double distillation contributes to a rich, flawless and flavourful spirit. The spirit from each cultivar was matured separately, first for 10 months in new Limousin French Oak barrels before spending the remaining 10 year period in third-fill Limousin French Oak. The final blend had an eight months marrying period before bottling, resulting in an elegant, soft and well-balanced brandy. Flavors: On the palate it displays a potpourri of flavours including fruit, vanilla, cloves and other spices. Cool fact: Some years a Cabernet Sauvignon is added to the blend. There is also a six-sleeper villa with its own butler, pool, kitchen and dining room! One of the standouts of this trip had to be the exquisite dining experience. It’s not often one gets served soft shell crab with coconut soil and chilli saffron ice cream for starters, and peppered ostrich with cauliflower puree for mains. Expect to star gaze on the deck, whilst indulging in a fine dining dinner with a touch of ‘safariesque’ elements. Forget feeling sluggish and slothful after a meal - not at this safari lodge! We just love the fact that all the herbs, vegetables and fruits are mainly grown from their own garden, which is one hundred per cent organic.
