S

eeing as though we all spent around 38 - 40 weeks warm, safe and well fed in the belly of our mothers, what better way to spend the month of May by returning the womb favour and treating mom with unique gifts, a special experience and a delicious meal (or two or three). In which case we have you covered. This month’s issue is packed with ideas and suggestions on how and where to spoil mom. Stumped on gift ideas? Check out page 10 as we’ve taken the liberty of sourcing a variety of gorgeous, floral items for you like the Valdo Floral Edition Brut or some floral bling. It’s a bouquet of gifting in this month’s shopping section. Check out this month’s selection of spas fit for a motherly visit on page 17, which might be just the thing that mom needs after a morning meander in our Leaisure Activities options on page 37. Need some ideas for a special Mother’s Day dinner? Something a little more lit than last year? This month’s restaurant is the Fireroom at Montecasino where just about anything you order is on fire. You also can’t go wrong with the Bar One sliders and strawberry Nutella pancakes if dessert is your thing.

How does mom take her tea? With a raised pinky and 2 sugar cubes or would she substitute the tea cup for a flute with bubbles? Either way, we have our top 5 picks for High Tea treats for you to consider on page 24. And if this year, mom’s really keen to let her hair down, then our must-try Tequila cocktail recipes should do the trick. And if dad’s feeling a little neglected this month, tell him to keep last year’s Happy Socks on as our June issue is just a month away. Till then, take care and enjoy exploring the City of Gold as I have while compiling this months issue for you!

HELLO JOBURG partners with

Operation Hunger O

peration Hunger has been running for forty years this year and they, therefore, have a significant history of positive action in the fight against malnutrition in South African homes, schools and communities using sustainable and proven methods that empower people and their communities. Operation Hunger is constantly running campaigns to raise funds for identified needs and worthy causes on behalf of the beneficiaries who themselves, are not able to do so in an effective manner. From feeding schemes that assist communities that do not have access to even one hot meal a day to sustainable integrated income generating food security schemes like soup kitchens, gardens and egg-laying projects. They also assist with providing clean and accessible water to households where water is not readily available (e.g. rainwater tanks, water rollers, boreholes/hand pumps, windmills and

spring protection) so that individuals and communities can develop gardens, support livestock and be protected against water-borne diseases. Having been in business for just over sixteen years, Justyn shares that it has, for him, mainly been a tireless focus on growing the business, building the brand and focussing on the immediate concerns that surround any business owner’s life. “I never felt like I had a mission though,” he says. “One needs a bigger picture, a reason why and a reason to share and give back to the community.” Many business people spend most of their junior years driving business and the finances of the company – looking at where to expand, and how to make money, and spend their later years in life immersed in philanthropy and giving back. “I got tired of giving a little here and a little there, but never really making a major contribution at any point. Also, sometimes one can wonder whether the money you give is going to the right place,” says Justyn. Justyn elaborates on how he was looking for an organisation to partner up with that had similar values and goals, and after working on several projects alongside the team from

Operation Hunger, they asked him to join their board, which he humbly accepted. “The team are good, ethical people. I love what they stand for and I am looking forward to being part of this organisation. I have many connections that I have developed over my years in business, and these are people and companies that I can bring to the table to assist with the projects and initiatives we are working on.” adds Justyn. We encourage our Hello Joburgers to get involved and donate online on the Operation Hunger website – and to keep an eye out on the magazine and online for more news! 5 www.operationhunger.co.za T @Operationhunger f www.facebook.com/ operationhungersa

BABYLON

Words Cazz Tregurtha

JOBURG

One of Joburg’s best gay bars by far, Babylon is a sure-fire way to end off your day out. What makes this place so fantastic is that it’s an all-inclusive space that allows you to mingle and dance the night away. Oh, and we have to mention that the bartenders are all shirtless, with abs that are to die for! They even throw in a little dance number now and then. Try not to get too distracted guys and girls. Only open on Fridays & Saturdays: 8 pm – 4 am. 1 083 993 8205 5 babylonthebar.co.za

How do you balance being a mom and a career driven woman? My children always come first so while my kids are at school, I work on my styles, orders and marketing concepts. I love what I do but I’m so lucky to have an amazing husband who is a handson father which makes balancing everything that much easier. How will you be spending Mother’s Day this year? Every year both my husband and my parents, uncles and aunties come to us for a beautiful brunch and we enjoy being together as a family. Where’s your ultimate Jozi spot to take the kids on the weekend? I would say the Irene Dairy farm. My girls love walking around, feeding the cows, touching them and enjoying their fresh milk and yoghurt. 5 www.irenefarm.co.za

WELLNESS WAREHOUSE Opens new store opens in Benmore Gardens

A

new store has just opened its doors in Benmore Gardens and it is no surprise that this shop is already bustling. One of Wellness Warehouse’s trademarks is it’s organic and 'free-from' food ranges and superior supplements as well as eco-friendly home solutions and cruelty-free beauty products, all offered with their characteristic 360° approach to wellbeing and personal service. Established in 2007 by two brothers; Sean Gomes, a medical doctor with a passion for preventative healthcare and Carlos Gomes, a retail pioneer with a vision to offer everything you need to live life well under one roof; Wellness Warehouse has since grown into South Africa's largest wellness retailer. The new Benmore Store offers some firsts for the group. One being the introduction of Cape Organic fresh fruit and vegetables. The struggle with organic produce is supplying consistently and with this partnership, they hope to overcome this hurdle. Basic produce such as lettuce and tomatoes as well as other vegetables are now available in store. Another great aspect about this is

16

Hello Joburg • May 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

that Wellness trusts these suppliers – you know where the produce is coming from and that they’re certified organic. Wellness Warehouse Benmore also offers a wonderful vegan range – a wide variety of frozen meat substitutes and meat-free options are in their freezers. Hello Meat Free Monday! As the public becomes more aware of the harm that pesticides do to the body, as well as the negative impacts of our stress-filled lifestyles, the focus on organic, fresh products are in huge demand. Cold-pressed juices, sourdough bread, banting bread and a vast gluten free range, as well as many supplements, stock the shelves. The store has a variety of naturopaths, vitatherapists and nutritionists on their floor at all times – make sure to chat to the experts, who will be able to assist you with any product queries and offer suggestions, solutions and advice. Another great initiative that Wellness Warehouse has just launched is their ‘One Small Change Campaign’. The campaign encourages people to just make one small change to their lifestyle at a time, instead

of trying to do a huge shift, which can be very overwhelming, to say the least. The ethos is to help and guide people to start living a better life, and this vibrant store is the perfect place to begin that journey. Wellness Warehouse is passionate about making it possible to live life well and is more than just an everyday health shop, but rather a destination, an experience and lifestyle – and that it surely is! Now please excuse us while we munch on our yummy gluten-free chocolate biscuits… Shop 125, Benmore Centre, Benmore Gardens 1 011 883 3453 5 www.wellnesswarehouse.com

T

he first question is obviously, why the name - Fireroom? Well, because everything is on fire, literally. Yes, you got it - this place is “lit”! The double volume restaurant is beautifully decorated, dark and light wood fuse well together and large chandeliers cast an ethereal spangled light over the floors. A delightful aroma wafts subtly past to start your mouth watering for the excellent meal ahead. A large winding staircase is the focal point upon entering and leaves one intrigued as to what is upstairs. Of course, as would Alice in Wonderland, we headed up the stairs to see what was on

the go. Comfy booths, a smoking room and a large outdoor balcony create a great flow and ambience, and we settled into a cosy booth. Right, so back to the fire element. The sushi is on fire, as are the cocktails. They also offer a wide variety of cognacs, cigars, single malt whiskeys, as well as having a large and well-stocked wine cellar.

We also love the fact that the menu is not only printed but is also available on I-pad with pictures of most of the dishes. Not a novel concept – but a very helpful one, especially when one is a flaming sushi virgin. We ordered a portion of the Fire Roll, which is a California roll filled with salmon, jalapeno,

20

Hello Joburg • May 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

kewpie mayo, cream cheese and yakitori sauce, the sauce is artfully lit and poured over the rolls – the result creates a highly worthy Instagram post, trust us. It’s not all fire though, the menu is extensive and offers many options from fish to salads, meat and poultry, as well as dim sum and delicious poke bowls. Our waiter was well informed on the menu and answered our many questions without hesitation. Dessert is always on our radar, and their Bar One Sliders, as well as the Strawberry Nutella Pancake, received rave reviews around the table. This would be an ideal venue for a birthday party, entertaining business guests or even a catch up with friends, especially for those who enjoy dining with a difference. Certainly, two thumbs up from us! Montecasino 1 011 465 0587 5 www.tsogosun.com/montecasino/ restaurants-bars/restaurants/fireroom

JACKIE RIGHI-BOYD From Dolci Café

Arriving at Dolci Café in Craighall Park feels a bit like coming home. The little café, although it has expanded recently, has the homely feel of a traditional Italian restaurant.

She swore she would never get into the restaurant industry, instead heading down to UCT to study management and then straight into corporate work. Several years later, utterly sick of her corporate job and at a cross road, her husband encouraged her to follow her dreams, but she had no idea what to do.

“I literally woke up in the middle of the night with one of those amazing ‘light bulb’ moments” enthuses Jackie. “It was as clear as day, I wanted to be a pastry chef!” She took a pastry course here in Johannesburg, before packing up and heading back to Italy, where she spent most of her teenage years and it was here that she gained most of her experience interning in a pastry

shop in the little town that was as traditional as they come. She came back to South Africa a few months later, and Dolci Café was born. “Here in South Africa it’s hard to survive on just selling pastries, people want to get everything in one place – and that is how our breakfast, then lunch and then dinner menu was born and added on to our pastry offering” she adds. This is your neighbourhood eatery, the vibe is chilled, and the customers stop to hug and greet Jackie, and her husband, who manages the front of house. “I love it when people return again and again and bring their family and friends, that really makes me happy”. The menu is all the things Jackie grew up eating and recreated again as an adult. “I am an Italian South African, so there is a bit of everything in there.” Says Jackie. Her favourites include the “Eggs in Hell” – poached eggs in a delicious Arrabiata sauce. The Gnocchi with Bolognaise sauce also gets the stamp of approval and we love that there is something for everyone. From toasted sandwiches to veal limone and even mussels, you want it, they have it.

High Tea Spots for Mother's Day!

THE SERIOUS ABOUT TEA, TEA AT THE TEA ROOM AT CRAB TREE AND EVELYN If your mother’s tea box includes rosehip tea, various herbal infusions and of course a good quality English tea, then this one is for her. The venue is cosy and the furniture an eclectic mix of antique and country style. Let mum put her feet up and enjoy an expert blend of herbal teas or stronger flavored black teas. And, of course, if she has a sweet tooth then delicious homemade butter cookies and crunch biscuits, cakes, and fresh scones which can be paired with fresh cream or preserves, and marmalades will be sure to make her smile. There’s a morning or afternoon high tea or alternatively an amazing à la carte menu. Where: Above Crabtree & Evelyn Store, Shop 147 Design Quarter, cnr Leslie & William Nicol Roads, Fourways

THE POSH TEA AT AURELIA’S (ABOVE) This one’s for the mum who raises her pinky when holding a china tea cup and enjoys a good scone with cream and strawberry jam. Every Sunday from 2pm to 4pm, high tea at Aurelia’s Emperors Palace pays homage to the British tradition that dates back to the mid-1700s. For the fancy folks back in the day, high tea became an increasingly important event on the social calendar. Today it’s a real treat in our fast-paced lives filled with store bought rotisserie chickens and box cakes to stop and let the tea brew. Treat mum to mini individual desserts, cupcakes, whole cakes, cold savoury dishes, sandwiches or filled rolls, scones with condiments, mini crumpets with condiments, hot mini savoury items and more. If there is no chocolate cake with honeycomb and caramel, then thrown a tantrum! This one’s a real winner for Mother’s Day so book in advance. Where: 64 Jones Rd, O.R. Tambo, Kempton Park

Words Carly Ritz

We got most of our good traits from our Momma’s. So, this month, let’s give Mum some extra loving. Nothing says “just you and me” like high tea for two. Whether mum is old school, a little eclectic or a boozy bruncher, we have the perfect tea date for you.

THE BUBBLY TEA AT THE SAXON This is for the mum that really doesn’t want to drink tea at all but would rather move straight onto the mimosas or Prosecco. But she’ll humour you none the less. Having said that, this mum still wants the gorgeous high tea venue for bragging rights and a moment to feel like the queen. If that sound relatable, you just can’t go wrong with high tea at The Saxon Hotel – with a complimentary glass of bubbles. Tea at The Saxon is an elegant ritual steeped in tradition and a definite specialty. A sophisticated experience awaits mum in the Piano Lounge, the ideal

THE CHILLED-OUT TEA FOR TWO AT THE SECRET TEA GARDEN This one’s for the mum that doesn’t want you to make such a “fuss” and certainly doesn’t want to go anywhere “fancy” on Mother’s Day – but unquestionably still wants to to feel special. It’s a tall order, we know but we think we found the sweet spot. venue for taking a muchneeded break from the chaos of life to catch up over the perfect cuppa or that complimentary glass of bubbles. Feel free to order more bubbles off the menu if the tea’s a tad too hot. Where: 36 Saxon Road

THE PAN-AFRICAN TEA @ YSWARA TEA ROOM IN MABONENG This one’s not open on the weekend, but we still highly recommend you take mom when you get a chance. This one’s for the mum on a spiritual cleanse or detox, not entirely sold on the traditional tea set up (and all that sugar) but also looking for a truly unique experience. For centuries, African communities have created root, stem, fruit and flower infusions either for religious or medicinal reasons. YSWARA Tea Room is a gourmet tea company created by Swaardy Martin, that offers a collection of these rare African tea blends. The luxury South African tea brand opened its flagship tea room a few years

back at the Cosmopolitan in Maboneng. The venue’s aesthetic is inspired by the brand’s PanAfrican spirit with inspiration from all parts of Africa: A Moroccan-inspired tearoom, Coptic crosses from Ethiopia and totem lamps inspired by West and Central Africa. Totally Instagrammable! This venue also has presents covered! Let mom browse the collection of luxury teas, infusions and tea time accessories that are sourced, blended and curated by African tastemakers. THE RESTAURATEUR

dining out

ARIEL COHEN From Free Food

Flavour alchemist, Ariel Cohen has always played with his food; but it was only in 1986, after becoming a vegetarian that he really started to play. Becoming a vegan in 2001, he explored food that was gluten, wheat, sugar, dairy and preservative free. He was making “free food,” and so the provocative name and concept was birthed.

Words Taryn Louch Image informedappetite.com/chef-interview-ariel-cohen/

eing in clothing production, Free Food* had a humble beginning operating out of Ariel’s Parktown North cottage, where he shared his bedroom with three freezers, preparing frozen vegan meals. Today, Free Food Diner & Take Away is a quirky gem just off Corlett drive, where no meal leaves the kitchen without Ariel’s approval. He takes his responsibility of restaurateur seriously, and together with his passionate team are committed to using only the finest, fully flavoured, whole food ingredients. Aeriel Cohen aims to present patrons with a delicious, discerning offering that focuses on the importance of what they put into their bodies. This unexpected hole in the wall eatery is a delightful mix of flavoursome food, juxtaposed with the grit of the street. Ariel’s greatest reward is doing what he loves, and today, with more people empowered by what they eat, his product is more relevant than ever, which excites him. His roasted chickpea and

brinjal pizza is a far cry from the instant soya mince and noodles he prepared when he first moved out of his home. He has been experimenting ever since to create food that not only tastes good but is good for you too. His recipes are inventive and original, and while he likes to eat his own food, he enjoys the occasional vegan spoil from Budmarsh Country Lodge’s Executive Chef Vincent Bals. From making his own chocolate to cheese, Ariel creates everything on his menu.

From making his own chocolate to cheese, Ariel creates everything on his menu. If you happen to catch him at work in the kitchen, you’ll quickly see that food is his passion, not his job.

POKÉ BRUNCH TIME

(Poke (Po-Keh) /poʊˈkeɪ/ verb Right, so you and mum have had a good catchup and a lovely stroll and now you’re both a little peckish. All the rage in the Big Apple but still quite newish to the food scene in Jozi are the opening of Poké bowl restaurants. It’s a raw fish salad traditionally served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine. In Jozi, it’s totally a main meal and pretty filling with a whole bunch of local variants. Ono Eatery Where: Illovo Junction, 1 Corlett Dr, Illovo. What to have: We are big fans of the custom poke where you can chose your base, chose your protein and seasoning. Otherwise try the Prawn Sriracha. 1 078 893 1786

James & Ethel Grey Park Where: Edgewood Avenue & Melrose St, Melrose, Johannesburg Level of difficulty: It doesn’t get more laidback than this. Truth is that it’s mostly round and round the garden like a teddy bear style with little chance of straining anything. Draw card: It's also close to coffee shops, perfect for a nice cup of coffee or tea afterwards.

James & Ethel Grey Park

Delta Park Where: 77 Craighall Rd, Victory Park, Randburg Level of difficulty: Between the grass, sand, gravel, couple of hills, mud and a few puddles if it’s been raining, we like to think of this walk as the somewhere in the middle. Not too hard but more than a stroll in the park ironically. Draw card: Bird sanctuary.

Melville Koppies Reserve Where: 4 Judith Rd, Emmarentia, Randburg Level of difficulty: Requires comfortable shoes as this walk can be steep in certain places. There is an option for a more challenging hiking trail if you’re feeling it. Draw card: Magnificent setting, interesting and geology.

Words Carly Ritz

There is so much to do in Jozi. And this one’s for all the mums, so let’s map out the perfect day.

1

If there is anyone constantly nagging to see you in person, we’re pretty sure it’s mum. Being May, go on and indulge her. Yes she’ll ask you annoying and prying questions about your life but the walk will do you good and time with mum is always special.

Introducing the Museum and Archive of the Constitution at the Hill (MARCH)

MARCH AT THE CONSTITUTIONAL HILL

T

he Museum and Archive of the Constitution at the Hill [MARCH] will be the latest development to the historical establishment and will stand at a prominent and symbolic place on Constitution Square, directly opposite the doors of the Constitutional Court. While the Court is the place where the Constitution is guarded and interpreted, MARCH will be the place where the origins of the Constitution are documented and understood. “I was a courier for the resistance, which meant I had to take sensitive documents across the border to those in exile. I used a dress with a very large hem and hid the letters and reports and other documents in the hem ... When I was in detention I used the dress to smuggle out other prisoners’ notes and

letters, which they had written on toilet paper…” Mmagauta Molefe -former political prisoner at the Women’s Jail, Constitution Hill. This is just one of the millions of untold stories that depict life as it was for many South Africans under the repressive law of the apartheid regime. MARCH will, for the first time tell the story of the making of the South African Constitution from its African origins in the fight against colonialism, segregation and apartheid up until today. This important story will be told with a multiplicity of voices providing a compelling collection of personal accounts, artefacts and an extensive archive which will tell intimate stories of how our Constitution was made. It will highlight the way in which the Constitution led the world

by including the concept of non-sexism as a foundational value, entrenching environment rights and social and economic rights as judicially enforceable rights, and having an expansive equality clause that extends to permitting affirmative action and prohibiting discrimination on grounds, amongst other things, of marital status, sexual orientation and disability. Above all, the MARCH will be a centre in which people can debate what the Constitution means to all of us today and discuss in an informed, openended manner whether it needs to be amended. 1 011 381 3100 5 www.constitutionhill.org.za  @visitconhill

With May being a month for mums it seems only fitting that the best new media has a strong maternal focus - with a twist.

SERIES This rework of the classic from 1960 debuted on Netflix mid-April and it is the perfect binge watch for the quirky mum (or you) on a weekend off. Maureen Robison is a mom who has been selected, along with the rest of her family, to colonise a new world. However, it all goes horribly wrong when her family’s aircraft is violently forced off course and crash lands on a strange new planet. Maureen has to juggle an estranged relationship with her husband while trying to keep her 3 children safe. It has action, romance and drama all rolled into one crazy adventure.

GAME Nintendo Labo

This is a great toy to keep children busy for hours and also features an intriguing video game for the 12 to 15-year-old age group (tweens have notoriously been difficult to purchase games for). Nintendo Labo works with the Nintendo Switch console. The set has pre-made cardboard cut-outs and materials that you build into a structure, like a car or piano, before adding your Nintendo Switch console to the mix. The console interacts with the structure and just like magic you have a fully immersive gaming and toy experience.

This book could help us better juggle life or at least give mom a little help. Ken Watanabe’s Problem Solving for Smart People has been made available as a free SlideShare on LinkedIn. The books are an easy read for teens upward and supply various skills and activities to help you better clear the hurdles in your life. A step-by-step philosophical look at how to tackle problems head-on and solve them rather than letting them consume you.

motoring #CityProof with Nissan Qashqai

WHEELS

It may surprise you that yummy mummies and (some delicious daddies) actually have very basic product needs. ‘Does this phone/ nutri-bullet/car make my life easier, reduce my stress levels and for some, make me look cool – as a byproduct of course?’

W

e attended the Nissan Qashqai launch at the Urban grunge bar and grill venue in Braamfontein, Republic of 94 to see if the enhanced and improved crossover vehicle would make the cut. Having pioneered the crossover segment over a decade ago, bringing together the practicality of an SUV with the efficiency of a hatchback, there’s a lot of excitement about this car. Here’s what we thought… Is the Qashqai smarter than a 5th grader? Anyone with kids knows stressful city driving is amplified by children screaming in the back seat. With the Qashqai, what really stood out for us was the smart mobility features designed to keep you safe on the road when distracted by kids - or bratty adults, let’s be fair.

Brake Assist

Lane Correct

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied

What we LOVE Blind Spot Warning - alerts the driver of a vehicle in the adjacent lane during lane changes that you may miss. Intelligent Braking - detects the distance of the preceding vehicle and activates the brakes, if necessary. Around View Monitor - Uses five cameras positioned around the vehicle to provides a 360-degree view of your surroundings. Intelligent Cross Traffic Alert - When backing out of a parking space, this feature can detect and warn the driver of vehicles that are approaching behind the Qashqai. FYI: Bluetooth and ISOFIX come standard!

WHAT WORKS FOR US

Getting to that meeting: The NissanConnect touch-screen satellite navigation unit has a smart new user interface, and the roof antenna is now in the shape of a shark fin for improved reception. Work and social calls during a commute: The integrated microphone for hands-free telephone use has been moved to the overhead lamp unit for improved performance. Space to put sh*t: Big up to Nissan on the clever storage spots situated throughout the vehicle! The 430-litre boot increases to 680 litres when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded flat; ideal for airport drops, massive monthly shops and extra-curricular activity bags.

Do I look good? Of course, we want to look good cruising the streets. Now unless you’ve been behind the wheel of one of its predecessors, you may not notice all the design changes so, here’s the dish on the new exterior… Sexy and stylish! People will look, especially if you rock up in their launch colour; Vivid Blue. We especially like the sharp nose and tail. There’s an integrated new front bumper and face with the latest incarnation of Nissan’s iconic “V-motion” grille. Bright lights with the new halogens and the ‘boomerang’ Daytime Running Lamp signature. The clam-shell bonnet and rear bumper have been redesigned and there are new 17inch and 19-inch alloy wheels, designed to reduce drag and make an impression.

Can I afford it? Without a doubt this car offers for value for money and is competitively priced. However, it’s still not for nothing. Pricing ranges from R 334 900 to R 434 000 for the 8 derivatives. FYI: The Qashqai is backed up by Nissan Assured including 24-hour roadside assistance and has a class-leading 6-year/150,000km warranty, and a comprehensive 3-year/90,000km service plan.

motoring

Is the Qashqai work/social proof? Many of us spend a lot of time in our cars and we need things to work at the touch of a button, literally.

CONSTANCE LEMURIA - Praslin

The only 18-hole golf course in The Seychelles and a Green globe certified hotel.

O

ne minute you’re eyeballing the evergreen lawns, the next you're focusing on the most exquisite beach in all of the Seychelles - Anse Georgette. Pristine white sand and azure waters captivate all five senses. Hop on a golf cart and then walk less than a kilometre through the towering trees to marvel at this natural beauty, which has been named one of the three most beautiful beaches in the world. Next, head down to the infinity pool cascading into second and third plunge pools and order a tropical cocktail at the Legend Pool Bar. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy,

you can select another option as there are five bars in total and four restaurants. Sample fresh seafood from the Indian Ocean in Creole style at The Nest Restaurant, with stretches of turquiose waters and views that go on to infinity. If you were planning on proposing, this would be just the spot. At Constance Lemuria, one simply reconnects with nature. Not only is this a turtle sanctuary, but the lush landscape, titanic flora and fauna and the exclusivity of this hotel will dazzle you. It's five-star luxury all the way. 5 www.constancehotels.com

PARADISE SUN - Praslin Discover the ethos behind the Tsogo Sun brand right here in the heart of the island with the most extensive service, quality and mastery in the hotel provision.

D

o not go before visiting this island paradise, and while the rooms are well groomed and tick all the right boxes, what stands out is the location. Set on one of the most spectacular beaches in the world, this piece

of paradise sets the Seychelles apart from the rest. After your tropical fruit breakfast, you’ll head on down to the recliners and never leave. Under the palm trees with an outstretched beach at your feet, you can meander down the oceanfront for a brisk walk while admiring the raw untouched beauty. The water is so flat you can bring your fashionable flamingo floaty along and watch as the fish tickle your toes. Crystal clear water with a Mojito in hand, we think it's safe to say this is heaven on earth.

The hotel also offers spa treatments, childcare facilities, an entertainment centre, deep-sea fishing, snorkelling and sunset boat cruises. There’s a daily activity itinerary and lots in store for the children. You can also take a boat trip to Aride Island or Curieuse Island, but we would recommend doing nothing. Simply wine and dine at their beachfront St Pierre Beach Restaurant, which serves bountiful buffet dinners and then just relax, and breath in the breath-taking views. 5 www.tsogosun.com

We’re pretty sure you’ve heard her on the Fresh Breakfast Show every weekday morning with over 5 million listeners daily. But we wanted to find out more about this fiercely motivated and hardworking woman  @mphomaboi T @MphoMaboi

Hello Joburg • May 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

You are one of the country’s leading sports anchors. How does that sentence make you feel? I’m always honoured to be recognized in this space with other amazing women who work super hard.

What has it been like working in a male-dominated industry? I’ve worked in male-dominated spaces my entire life. I started off in Information Technology where I would be working as the solitary woman in a team of men, so I sort of got used to being the odd one out. It’s driven me to work harder in all I do. You’re also a mom and a wife, what do you try to instil in your family on a daily basis? I try to instil the concept of hard work to my children; that anything is possible in life if you’re willing to put in the hours. We also try to make time for family as much as we

can since we both travel so much for work. So, when we are home, it’s quality time. If you could turn back the clock, which one moment in your life would you return to? My wedding day, it was such a beautiful day and at that moment the world could have stopped, and I would have been at peace. What do you love the most about South Africa? Our country is full of amazing people and the weather is always great even on bad days. People who have moved overseas always mention how our weather is one of the highlights they miss the most. There’s no place like Mzansi at all.

You recently (and secretly) got married to your footballer bae, what does being a wife mean to you? I actually didn’t get married secretly *lol*, I find this notion so funny. I

just didn’t announce to the world when my wedding would be. Those who were invited were aware and those are the people who mattered. I’ve never been one to share too much about my personal life in the public space. That’s all. How does it feel to be a wife? Nothing has changed except that now he’s my husband. We still do the same things as before. Beach or Snow? Beach. I love the sun. Your all-time favourite part of SA? I adore Cape Town but the Cape without water restrictions - hahaha! I also LOVE Mpumalanga for the scenery. My gosh it’s breathtaking. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Never allow your gender to limit your dreams. If you dream it, you can achieve it.
