People of Joburg!

Zareef Minty You’re a politician, businessman and future lawyer. Have you always been an over achiever? Not really. During my early high school years I was just an average student but the ambition was always there. I took the first step towards my dreams by starting up a clothing company in grade 10 called SMB. What is your moment of triumph? I have had many moments that brought huge enjoyment and satisfaction like becoming the youngest youth president at a national election to date and starting up my Build A School Foundation.

We recently attended the latest showing of South African Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2016 collections, and we were struck by the current changes in the fashion industry. These changes aim to keep the local fashion scene up to par with what is happening internationally, and it is clear the organisers looked at international trends for Fashion Weeks and made adjustments accordingly. A key difference this season was the idea of rotational front-row seating at the new venue for SA Fashion Week, The Park at Hyde Park Corner. The seating plan was rearranged each night, giving guests the opportunity to experience fashion from the coveted front row. Another major international trend is to make fashion more accessible and available for purchase following the show, so guests were invited to shop the collections at Hyde Park Corner soon after the last model had left the runway – this made the whole experience much more user-friendly, creating a sense of readily available fashion for the savvy consumer.

LeAnne Dlamini is living the life she always imagined for herself. And while she is happily married with two beautiful daughters and breathing her musical dream, she won’t pretend it’s easy to have it all. LeAnne shares the NO secret to her work-life balance with Hello Joburg Magazine this Mother’s Day Month. Picture this… She’s standing on the stage at the 2012 X-Factor UK auditions with her husband and daughter rooting for her in the wings. She does what she was born to do and belts out the music that has been living in her veins; Alicia Keys’ hit single “If I ain’t got you” to be exact. The crowd erupts with applause and the celebrity judges give a resounding YES as she moves through to the next round. Two years later, her debut album hits the music waves…” So what just happened? From the time she could walk, LeAnne knew all she ever wanted to do was make music. She began her lyrical journey at the National Schools of Arts where she studied Drama and Music and was discovered while leading praise worship at the Rhema Church. With a natural talent at her disposal, no one was surprised when she signed a three-year deal with an international record label after her studies - and so put into motion the wheels of her career.

10

Her first baby was delivered in October 2015 following six long hard months of working on and finally birthing her debut album, “Simply Luvlee”. And just like that LeAnne made her musical mark firmly on Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

audiences in the country and around the globe. Her single “Got Me Going Crazy” fast became a national radio and club gem in South Africa and was quickly picked up on the Dubai music scene. The same single “Got Me Going Crazy” which was composed by LeAnne, was licensed by Universal Records in Europe where Coca-Cola ordered and released 75,000 units for a summer campaign. And the accolades and success didn’t end there. From the success of her song on radio in Dubai, LeAnne found herself responsible for opening stages for other music greats the likes of Kanye West and Joss Stone at the “Dubai Desert Rhythm Festival” to Sean Paul, Snoop Dogg and Pharrel Williams. Her 2 nd album, aptly named, “The Journey” was equally well received. The album was recorded and written in various parts of the world including Dubai, Los Angeles and Johannesburg. LeAnne worked with producer Damon Elliott who has worked with the likes of Pink, Jessica Simpson and Mya on the track, “B.A.N.G. I.T O.U.T”. “The Journey” churned out hit after hit with songs like “Put Your Hands Up” to “Feels Like” and the smash-hit ballad “I Cry”. LeAnne’s third musical offering is set for release this year. And how does she do it? Anyone who tells you (and there are many that will) that being a professional and a mom at the same time is a walk in the park, is very likely lost in a muddy swamp. And working in the entertainment industry with hours outside of the 9/5 realm and sometimes a crazy travel schedule makes finding that balance even more challenging. So it’s really refreshing to get a real answer to a question like this. So yes LeAnne is living her dream but she will also tell you that this comes

Anyone who tells you that being a professional and a mom at the same time is a walk in the park, is very likely lost in a muddy swamp with its own price - great difficulty, guilt and fatigue in particular. “There really is no secret. I just do the best I can everyday with the help and support of my husband, my mom and our nanny. Without this team I would be a complete mess! Scheduling and planning also helps make my life a little easier. It gets a little crazy but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” LeAnne says that what they don’t warn you about when becoming a parent is the guilt you could experience for trying to have it all – for trying to build that very career you want so much and still be the very best mom possible. “You sometimes have to make sacrifices and spend time away from your kids and that is very hard. Not to mention that you are always tired.” But her children are her world. “I have a lot more patience and can tolerate a lot more, but my heart is so filled with love for my children it sometimes scares me.”

While she shares her musical talents with the world, LeAnne has specific things she wants to share with her daughters. “I want them to always be kind, always be bold and always be themselves unapologetically.” Of the many things LeAnne’s mother has taught her, getting up after being knocked down is pivotal to who she is.” My mom has strength I’ve never seen before and I hope to be as courageous as her someday.” And advise for new moms? LeAnne says don’t be so hard on yourself for a start. “Make sure you schedule and plan your days accordingly and ask for help. Having a great support system in place to help with your kids and your business makes a huge difference and takes a huge load off you too. I strongly believe we perform better in business and at home when we’re happier. I think as a working mom, we’re just naturally

hard on ourselves, no matter how much we try to do for us it’s just never enough. They speak about mother’s guilt and I never knew how true it was until I had my own kids. Just always know that you’re doing the best you can and stop beating yourself up about it. So what more can we expect from this dynamic mother and songbird? “I’ve just collaborated with Miss Boss Couture, a custom design label on their winter range. It’s very new but also very exciting. We launched LeAnne Dlamini for Miss Boss Couture and the response has been overwhelming.” And then of course her new album will also be out in June, which is her big focus at the moment – so stay tuned. Can Joburg produce SA’s first eSports superstar?

The rise of professional gaming as a viable career, along with the concept of eSports stars, is set to be the hot tech topic for 2016. We’ve seen prize pots of millions of dollars up for grabs and large corporations have been throwing massive amounts of money at this new craze that’s taking over the internet.

S

outh Africa has been somewhat behind when it comes to professional gaming; our local eSports teams have competed internationally, but they’re yet to make an impact on the global scene. A number of local female players have joined international teams and gone on to achieve great results, but we’re still waiting for that one big superstar to put South Africa on the map... I think that superstar is going to come from Joburg. Over the next few months, look out for gaming competitions happening at your favourite shopping malls and at big events. In October, Joburg will be host to the rAge Expo – the Southern Hemisphere’s largest gaming exhibition – and it is there that the final showdown of Telkom’s Digital Gaming League Masters will take place, with a prize pool of one million rand.

Building up to rAge, we’ve already seen Vodacom Fibre host a successful event at the Mall of the South earlier this year, where professional gamers took centre stage at the food court to ensure spectators could make themselves comfortable on bean bags and enjoy the action. Word on the street is that Vodacom will soon be hosting more gaming events around our city.

SamWRIGHT #TechGirl When she’s not daydreaming about getting to work by hoverboard to skip the traffic, Sam Wright spends her time scouring the internet and chatting to other tech fanatics to find the hottest gizmos, gadgets and tech experiences.

and the opportunity to utilise high-speed internet and top-of-the-range equipment to get in some much needed practice time. The local eSports scene has a big future in Johannesburg and it is already going from strength to strength. It’s time to pick up those game controllers, Hello Joburgers! H

To watch our future stars in action, look no further than Montecasino’s The Hive. This interactive entertainment centre regularly hosts some of our best local gamers – many enjoy the shared environment of interacting with their fellow gaming fanatics

Green’s Grill House

Go big this month and make a trip to the Eye of Africa Golf & Residential Estate and its newly opened Green’s Grill House in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg. With over 750 stands sold and more new stands being released, this estate is more than just a location – it is leisure at its finest.

The first thing you’ll notice upon visiting Green’s Grill House is the evergreen view – not only of the golf course, but also the towering trees which encircle the venue (the trees and a bunch of golf carts, of course). The restaurant is stylish, and its undeniable sense of charm and exceptional service should be celebrated... And that’s before you start eating!

22

The food is packed with flavour and lots of love. Treat your family to a taste of delicious favourites, like their traditional fish and chips that will certainly hit the spot! The menu offers a variety of options, from ocean freshline fish to hearty pastas and pizzas baked Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Eye of Africa is more than a location; it’s one of South Africa’s best lifestyles. in the restaurant’s signature ten-deck woodburning pizza oven. You will be spoiled for choice, whether you delve into the mushroom and feta chicken breast or opt for the healthy halloumi salad. We loved the classic chicken Prego fillet served on a soft Portuguese roll for only 62 bucks! We also couldn’t resist ordering a few sides, and gave their baked potato and vegetables of the day – buttery butternut and creamy spinach – a well-deserved ten out of ten. Unfortunately, we were so impressed with their wholesome cooking, we didn’t leave space for dessert; however, we hear the chocolate mousse is heavenly, and at only R35, it’s a bargain! This venue is also ideal for corporate and private events, which they are most certainly equipped to cater for as the estate is the new home of the PGA Championship. So, Hello Joburgers, what are you waiting for? No more complaining about boring ol’ Jozi; pack the kids in the car and head on south! ello Joburgers, what more could you ask for than basking in the sun on a Sunday watching golfers swing away? That’s one of our favourite things about this location: being just 35 minutes outside of Joburg, yet feeling far from the chaos of city life. Everything about the estate embodies understated indulgence and complete relaxation, and you can look forward to being welcomed by the outdoor allure, rolling hills and beautiful homes.

chef

of the month

- Chef Eric Bulpitt -

A passion for the kitchen

Award-winning South African chef Eric Bulpitt is full of beautiful contradictions. There is a gentle humility when he speaks of why he likes to cook for people, yet he was drawn to the kitchen as a young man because of its rugged appeal.

E

ric credits his ouma for awakening his passion for cooking and fondly recalls holidays on his grandparents’ farm in Rustenburg where, as a young boy, he would assist his grandma in her large farmhouse kitchen. However, he also admits that bad boy chef Marco Pierre White was his first food hero “because he was a ruffian rock star chef who was all about pushing hard”.

24

laboriously. Eric explains, “I entered the kitchen at the Winchester Mansions at 24. Initially, it was to be a six-month stint as part of my internship in hospitality training, but I ended up spending four years there with my head down. I was pushing really hard to learn as much as I could because I knew I lagged behind the other chefs and needed to catch up.”

This yearning to learn took Eric to the Noma kitchen in Copenhagen in 2010. It was at Noma where Eric first became fixated in Bulpitt’s own rise to culinary fame seems foraging, a passion that led him to be regarded pretty meteoric: he won his first Top 20 Eat as one of the foremost leaders in the foraging Out Awards nomination for Jardine in 2010 movement in South Africa. But he dislikes this and then in 2011, alongside chef PJ Vadas, rather limiting title. “I became really big into Bulpitt made the Eat Out Top 10 while at foraging for a while until about a year ago. We The Roundhouse. In 2013, having taken the still ‘forage’ for things, but I don’t like to call opportunity to branch out on his own, Eric it that as it is now a quite ordinary practice,” moved to Hermanus, where he opened The Restaurant on the Newton Johnson wine estate he sighs. in the magnificent Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. What Eric Bulpitt isn’t tired of, though, is During their first year they attained ninth flavours and good-quality ingredients. “My position in the Eat Out Top 10. respect for what’s been put on the earth comes from spending time on my oupa and ouma’s These accolades are a result of Eric’s passion farm, which was pretty much self-sustainable.” for perfection. It’s hard to imagine him anywhere else but in a kitchen, yet he came to Eric also loves fresh herbs and pickles, “I like strong flavours. When I was at Noma, I found be a chef by chance – he has had no formal training and his knowledge of food was picked that Europeans have a more subtle palate. up while working in kitchens and self-studying South Africans aren’t afraid of robust flavours. Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

They’ll eat a potjie (essentially a stew) in the middle of summer… At the moment I’m playing with strong flavours, but less heavy – a flavour punch that won’t drag you down.” There’s no stopping Eric when it comes to the topic of food, “There is a challenge in making food that people haven’t tried before (Chalmar sirloin with raw mushrooms, bone marrow dressing and Saldanha Bay oyster powder, anyone?), yet still allowing them to recognise elements and having them enjoy the food.” People’s enjoyment of his food is what drives Eric most: “When I cook, it’s all about making people happy. It’s about the pleasure of seeing them enjoy your food, and seeing their appreciative responses to your efforts.” And Eric cooks for himself and his loved ones, too. “I cook when I’m happy, or a little depressed, when I’m stressed, or when I’m relaxed. I just cook all the time. I cook for family, I cook at friends’ houses – yes, I’m the guy who takes over the kitchen,” he admits. And so you see, while Bulpitt may very well have the culinary genius of his first food hero, Marco Pierre White, he surpasses him in the kindness and generosity stakes. BODYTEC Start every week strong. Finish every week stronger! Overindulge during all the public holiday recently? Are those chocolate Easter eggs still lingering around your belly? Get back on track with one of the most convenient workouts of the 21st century. Let’s be honest, Hello Joburgers, we are all after instant gratification – we want results and we want them now! Well, we have some good news for you: BODYTEC really works! “How?” you might ask... Let us break it down. Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) training uses a medically approved device that has the capacity to contract your muscles via an electrical current passing through them.” During EMS training, up to 90 per cent of muscles are activated simultaneously and the muscle contractions are of higher quality and are more intense than voluntary exertion can do alone. Compared to conventional weight training, EMS training activates deeper muscle groups, which leads to better balance amongst the muscles in the body and increased core stability. We love that EMS training is a full-body workout that doesn’t only target one specific muscle, but instead activates a whole range of muscles, while making it possible to focus on your trouble areas. You’ll always train with your very own personal trainer and each session is only 20 minutes long. BODYTEC also provides you with clothing, which means you save big bucks on new gym attire! The best part? You only need one 20-minute session a week! Winning! My top tips: - I loved the Greenside branch and recommend my trainer OB, who kept me motivated and enthusiastic. - Stick to your regular exercise routine the other four days of the week in order to see results. - Never do BODYTEC on an empty stomach. Drink a smoothie before you go, and mix in protein or hemp powder for an energy boost. - During the training, sip on coconut water (we love Vita Coco) as it replenishes lost nutrients. leisureactivities You can't stop this train! A Sunday journey

to Cullinan with Friends of the Rail

How it works Visit their website www.friendsoftherail.com and book your train trip. There are various options, such as the Jacaranda City Explorer, Winter’s Tshwane Xplorer, or, our choice, the Cullinan Diamond Express. All the regular public steam trains have private coaches you can rent, which can accommodate ten to 70 people. Where to eat Once the train arrives in Cullinan, you have around five hours to explore. We took padkos (Afrikaans for “road food”) with us and had a lovely picnic under a mammoth oak tree, but if you would prefer to dine out, we recommend you try As Greek as it Gets or Piacere Ristorante. For dessert, you of course have to visit the acclaimed Harrie’s Pancakes!

36

What to do in Cullinan Cullinan’s main street, Oak Avenue, is the hustle and bustle of the town. Here you will find quaint restaurants, endearing sweet shops, and charming antique stores where you can buy gorgeous gifts so you can take a piece of Cullinan home with you. Winter’s fast approaching, and we’re starting to feel torn between staying indoors with a bottle of red and the inviting couch, or venturing outside the city for a brisk and exciting day out. leisure activities The heavens are closer than you think. Levitating a few hundred meters above the ground, just outside of Joburg, as the sun starts to wash over the Magalies mountains is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have in Gauteng.

T

his was our fourth attempt, which meant our fourth 3.30am wake-up call, to try and get off the ground at Bill Harrop’s Original Balloon Safaris. Because this adventure is so weather-reliant, numerous cancellations are not uncommon, but watching this experience unfold, it became very clear that all the early wake-ups were worth it! Arriving at 5.30am at the glorious Clubhouse Pavilion that's just a stone’s throw away from Hartbeespoort dam, one does not know what to expect. It’s still dark and you can just make out the three flat balloons sitting on the field, waiting to be inflated. It was so exciting to sip a welcomed hot cup of coffee, while watching the giant balloons get the life blown into them.

38

After ten minutes of watching the round giants rise off the ground and it was nearly time for lift-off. Then, following a short safety briefing Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

on correct landing positions, the pilot ignited the balloon, which ever so smoothly started lifting off the ground. Millimetres at first, and then a couple of meters, we were moving towards the farm fields on the neighboring property. We were just high enough off the ground to clear the tops of the corn crops below. The pilot explained the science to us – we needed to stay low in order to catch the correct wind direction. After we had travelled about a kilometer, the pilot let rip on the burner and we climbed a few hundred metres towards the sky. How exhilarating! We were literally just floating in the sky – no wind, no falling or flying sensation – just the quiet serenity of surrounding beauty. Watching the sunrise illuminate the ever-changing palette of the landscape below was like a painting coming to life. This is definitely one of the most beautiful experiences in the country, if you ask us. After about an hour in flight (or rather, in float), we enjoyed a smooth landing in a patch of grass, followed by some bubbly and orange juice, and we were able to watch the next flight take off from our landing spot, before heading back to the pavilion for a scrumptious breakfast. If you are stumped for something to do on a (very early) weekend morning, we recommend trying this out-of-world experience! arts&culture 4 Homegrown artists you should know

To be young, talented and sensitive, doesn’t hurt right now - especially if you’re an upcoming artist from KZN, supplying work to a hungry new gallery in Joburg. At a time when African art is gaining more attention internationally than ever before. Mlamuli Mkhwanazi, Stenjwa Luthuli , Buhle “Wonder” Mbambo and Mthobisi Mapumulo are doing just this.

hey hail from the BAT centre situated on Durban’s Harbour Edge. This is where intrepid Henry George curator, Darryl Gray, stumbled across them. And where they met - as determined young artists seeking to break onto the scene. Says Gray, ‘’I see each of these artists as a barometer of this interesting time in South African history. As revealed in the authenticity of the art they make. And also as individuals, living what they depict. So it’s no wonder that their work’s getting attention from tourists and local art aficionados, alike. Alongside this, there’s a mushrooming of smaller galleries in Joburg - each nurturing interest in local art, at a perspicacious time. Adds co-curator Mandy Walker, “In 2014, The Wall Street Journal sited Joburg (along with Bogota, Budapest and Seoul) as one of the four emerging art cities you should know. And with a weakening Rand, SA’s tourism industry economy is thriving and looks set to continue doing so. We’ve noticed well-heeled jetsetters are on the look-out for luxury, Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

bespoke items from far afield that reflect their travels. And which they can’t get easily, even in huge cities like New York. So whilst someone can get a Louis Vuitton handbag there for example, an Oil-on-Rooibos teabags work, like Andrew Orapeleng’s “Taxi Drivers lunch” that they’d find in our small boutique gallery in Joburg; is something they couldn’t lay their hands on easily.” “Even locally, consumers at the forefront of trends, are looking to purchase more carefully. And tiring of mall experiences that are big on brand but increasingly, low on quality. –And this is just the start of the era of the handmade, bespoke, artisanal item becoming more desirable (alongside the technology trend). It just makes sense right now to choose a once-off bespoke handmade item – like a work of art, to hand down to generations to come. The ultra-rich overseas are also diversifying their asset portfolio by including art. And big auctions companies like Bonhams in London have significantly increased their showing of South African art. Plus big SA galleries like Everard Read, have now opened in London. And, at home, many South Africans are veering towards investing in movable items - rather than buy more property/ renovate their homes and risk overcapitalising. In short, we’re seeing trend predictions materialising. - About Africa as the next big design and art leader in the world and a penchant for luxury bespoke goods. You can see these amazing four artists works on display at the Henry George Gallery in May & June. H 5 www.henrygeorgegallery.co.za f Henry George Gallery

home&decor Design with a conscience from Philip Pikus

Contemporary Classics is the debut fabric collection from Philip Pikus. This is a range of reworked classics in a neutral, contemporary palette of taupe, grey, bone and linen (with charcoal launching later in 2016) and is proudly made in South Africa.

C

arefully chosen and edited by prominent South African designer Philip Pikus, this collection offers the perfect foundation to create interiors that are beautiful and timeless. Making extensive use of cotton, linens, and blends thereof, the Contemporary Classics Collection also plays with bamboo – a very sustainable fibre – resulting in a bamboo boucle and rib with a beautiful handle that plays wonderfully with light. From 100% linen sheers to more chunky blended weaves, a wide selection of textures and tones all effortlessly complement and coordinate with each other.

The Philip Pikus philosophy The Philip Pikus brand is all about quality and understated luxury. Furthermore, it’s a brand with a powerful ethos, deeply entrenched in a philosophy of responsibility, awareness, sustainability and kindness – they’re all about designing with a conscience. At the heart of everything they do is their Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

undertaking to source responsibly, ethically and, wherever possible, locally. With this in mind, Philip Pikus is working closely with local mills, empowerment projects and artisans to produce exciting fabric and accessory collections. The man behind the name Celebrated South African designer Philip Pikus’ design journey has come full circle. At the tender age of 19, Philip started his interior design business whilst studying interior design at the Greenside Design Centre in Johannesburg. Years later, after a long and successful stint in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, he found himself in fashion and established the award-winning fashion brand, Bitter Chocolate, in Cape Town. A few years ago, Philip moved back into interiors and brings 25 years of design experience into the development of this, his first fabric collection. H 5 Philippikus.com

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

t the tender age of 23, Cape Town-based comedian and master wordsmith Devin Gray shows comedic prowess beyond his years. Having cut his proverbial teeth on the comedy circuit at the age of 16, Gray has already rubbed shoulders with some of the best local and international comedians, and won the Best Up-and-Coming Philips Comedy Style Award in 2013. The Hello Joburg team sat down with Devin to find out more about the Capetonian funny man, and this is what he had to say... You just did a show at Parkers – how was that? Parkers is one of the top live comedy venues in the country, so I anticipated blazing shows throughout my run. I was on from Thursday to Sunday, and some of the acts that are on haven’t seen me in years, so I was excited for that.

You’re a Capetonian (boo!); what do you love most about visiting Joburg? I love the climate in Joburg, and it’s breathtaking. It might be the pollution or the fact that I gasp at everyone who cuts me off, but the sunset is so vibrant that it is amazing to watch. Tell us something about you that will shock us. I am not a Cape Town boy! I am actually from Joburg, born and fled. I know the mountain style and the way I talk screams Cape Town, but in all honesty, I am one of you! And I apologise for that. If you had to choose three people, dead or alive, to have dinner with, who would they be? Alan Watts, Charles Bukowski and Kristen Wiig. The first two will provide hours of endless whiskey and conversation that will leave me questioning everything I think I know, while Kristen is there for my own personal reasons. I won’t get into that now... Just trust me on this.

What is your biggest fear? Becoming boring – I cannot imagine doing nothing and stagnating. This is the drive I have to be a comic; I want to see the world and do my craft in every city. Who do you think should be our next president? Hello Joburg • May 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

3 things you didn t know about Devin ’

1 Devin has a passion for fine whiskeys. 2 When he’s not busy being South Africa’s most loveable comedian, Devin divides his time between hobbies that see him take revenge on those who have wronged him and eating ice cream – no particular flavour, just as long as it’s ice cream. 3 Devin just ended a week-long stint at Splashy Fen and #DurbanComedyWeek over the Easter holidays. Ours? Anybody, really. Literally anybody. Donald Trump, Kanye West... Perhaps even Deez Nuts. There is a lot of pressure on our country to have a president “get it right”, but I don’t believe that any one person can do that. They need to build a team of professionals and go from there. Who would win in a fight between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West? Kim K hands down! I watched an episode of her show and saw her make that big basketball player guy cry – it was beautiful to watch. Kanye couldn’t 5 www.devingray.co.za handle that. I think Kim K was T @devingray_ born on the wrong side of the @devingray__ tracks; like she was too ghetto for the silver spoon. H

What happens if people don’t laugh? And how do you deal with hecklers? People who don’t laugh usually have the decency to allow you to finish your gig regardless of how good or bad it might be. A heckler, on the other hand, needs to be dealt with in a manner that leaves the rest of the audience on your team. I normally just carry on and push through the gig. A heckler is like a child: don’t give them attention and they’ll get louder until eventually they keep quiet and go to sleep.
