Your latest obsession... A budget for a major home renovation and landscaping! We’ve just bought an old house in an established neighbourhood. It has gorgeous bones and all the space we want but it can definitely do with a revamp! Best beauty find I was introduced to Crabtree & Evelyn via a gift a few years back and I’ve been hooked since.Their 60 second fix for hands (a hand scrub and moisturiser duo) in particular really lives up to its name and has become a decadent necessity. It’s like a spa experience at home. You love Jozi because... Great weather all year round – we really take this for granted, an inherent buzz & hustle unlike anywhere else and as clichéd as it may sound, the people. As a Capetonian living here for over a decade it can’t be argued that Joburgers are friendly, outgoing and social. Your year in three words... A mixed bag. I have some life changing milestones planned for this year – bring it!

Your fashion at the moment… Classic and comfortable. I love good basics with pops of colour. Country Road/Trenery, Gap, Banana Republic and Witchery are my favourites. Locally I’ve just discovered Superella in Melvile – so relaxed yet chic. Since I’ve left corporate, I’m over the high heels.

foreword

Hello Joburgers!

A

pril is always a welcome month on my calendar, with its promise of public holidays and moments spent together with family savouring the last of the warm weather.

This month we present a restaurant that offers delicious food and a great sense of family, Angelo’s perfect for a visit over the Easter break... make sure to take the kids as there is plenty on offer for them there! And if you need to entertain the kids at home, Cara-Lisa Sham shares her “Rawtella” bunny cupcake recipe with us and our new Decor contributor, Mandy Walker shows you how to plan the perfect Easter Egg hunt. But if your taste is a little more grown up in nature then take a squiz at our League of Beers column where Rob Heyns explains the art of pairing craft beer and chocolate, the perfect way to spend a day off. If all that indulgence leads to guilt, we have just the thing, turn to page 34 for info about a new gym, MovementX which offers an array of exciting classes. But if exercise isn’t your thing, merely read through John Lucas’s eating plan and follow his tips on staying lean through the Easter hols. And because the first of the Autumn chills makes us want to cosy up with a cup of something hot and read a good story, why not take an armchair journey with Kamini, our cover girl who shares her travel foodie adventures with us on page 10. I’m a Joburg girl, through and through, lived here all my life. My biggest adventure has been getting to know India, my three and a half year old daughter and myself much better in the process. It’s hard to say which love comes first – painting, writing or practicing and teaching yoga. My favourite hang outs are Living Yoga and Corner Cafe in Craighall Park and the Zoolake public pool in Summer. Two new spots I’m excited about are Bliss Juicery at The Colony Centre in Craighall Park (getting my greens and ginger shots before winter comes) and The Henry George Gallery in Parkhurst on 6th Street.

SILVERSTAR WILD WEST COUNTRY FEST

Wild West Country Fest takes you back to the 1880 – 1890’s when the West Rand was a Mining Town and men from afar afield as Canada, Australia, Cornwell and Holland as well as Kimberley and Pilgrims Rest arrived to pitch their tents and stake their claim. It was a wild place! These early rough necks spent their nights in Saloons, Gambling Dens and Beer Halls that were dotted around the diggings. This unique Festival promises a theatrical and thoroughly entertaining event reminiscent of those early pioneering days on the West Rand. Country rock, blue grass and big band entertainment will compliment the captivating mood of this nostalgic environment. Country markets and a mini amusement park for the children are also part of this festive occasion. 30 April to 3 May 2015 For more information visit: www. silverstarcasino.co.za or call 011 662 7300.

Pairing key pieces with the opulence of destination driven properties, the excessive styling of the collection is geared towards export, and this international footprint will include high end retailers across the globe. STREET SOPHISTICATION s it is currently Fashion Week season not only in South Africa but around the world, we are looking at the street style on Jozi fashionistas attending fashion shows. We love observing street style looks on fashion-forward individuals. Often, street fashion moves from the ground up: recently we have seen that street styles have influenced designers’ collections. The feel is urban and trendy, the look is relaxed yet stylish. We are seeing a blend of high-fashion elements with everyday items to create a hybrid look. This lends itself to a type of ‘street sophistication’. Some street trends include: the use of faux furs to add some unexpected glamour to an outfit, touches of lace, sheer fabrics used as overlays and of course, denim denim and more denim. Fashionistas are also playing around with various types of headgear.

beautiful new Shimansky Boutique has opened its doors in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. There’s something about diamonds that captures the imagination like no other stone. It could be their fire, their sparkle, or the hint of romance that accompanies each gem. A stone so special requires an equally magical setting – and Shimansky Boutique has provided just the platform. The new Shimansky Boutique in Nelson Mandela Square continues on its forerunners’ tradition, creating an inviting space where shoppers can relax and peruse in tranquility. We were invited to an opulent evening at the launch of the brand new store, which took place on the 25th of February at the Nelson Mandela Square. The space is open and inviting and we were welcomed with champagne and delightful canapés. Mr. Yair Shimansky himself then gave an educated talk about the brand, the new store and his vigor and excitement to be apart of our pulsating city. COVER FEATURE

Girl Eat World For those who watched Kamini Pather stir and mix her way into the South African culinary fraternity in the second season of MasterChef, you now get a chance to watch her eat her way through the world.

K

amini doesn’t say it lightly when she says she is living her dream. Her food journey has come full circle for the 31 year-old, newbie resident of Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Kamini’s food narrative began behind the screen – talking, blogging, sharing and posting all things food related with other equally engaged tech-savvy bloggers across the world. With her MasterChef title comfortably under her apron and her sheer determination to squeeze life’s opportunities for all its juice, Kamini has just returned from her ultimate food journey where she met those foodies who have inspired her across the blog world. Her 10 week, 10 country travel show Girl Eat World airs on the Food Network in Africa, the Middle East and Europe from the 15 May, and if the anecdotes she shares here with Hello Joburg are anything to go by, you won’t want to miss an episode. People, places and food philosophies swirl around the room as she recounts the once in a life-time journey. But here’s our favourite part of the story. Kamini’s global trot started in Johannesburg. It’s the old adage that goes that those of us who live in our city, explore it least. Kamini set out to rectify that. “I have lived in Durban and Cape Town. All I knew about Johannesburg was the Neighbouroods market. I wanted to really see Jozi.” She describes her first smiley (lamb head in case you haven’t tried it) in Soweto. “It is possibly the tenderest lamb I have ever eaten. But it was weird when I felt the bottom lip touch mine. It was a little creepy to be honest.”

Hello Joburg • April 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

incredible to watch.” Another memorable experience in Berlin was meeting Fraulein Kimchi – talk about a global fusion. Part Korean, part American, part German, Fraulein Kimchi grew up in a family of musicians in the US. Inspired by the traditional Korean side dish Kimchi, she created bespoke dishes like Kimchikäsespätzle – a true cultural mash-up with proper German proper spätzle, cheese, bacon and her spicy veg dish (the original gateway drug into her cooking world) and a new brand was born. “If you add cheese and bacon to just about anything, I’d say you’re winning.” Kamini muses. In Japan she met Miss Fancy Pants. Another global sensation who was born and raised in Vegas before returning to live in Tokyo. The furthest person from a passive observer, Kamini shares her insights into Japanese culture: “Everything about the country is so technically advanced. You can go to a sushi restaurant, order what you want on a tablet and have it arrive on a conveyer belt without any human interaction at all. Yet the culture is also so strongly nature based and spiritual”. And her culinary take-out from Japan? “I tried sea urchin. It has a burned rubber taste and looks like grass.” And of course her meal at restaurant Zaou was something to write home about. I mean how often do you fish for your own dinner? “There is a large fish tank in the middle of the restaurant with shellfish, lobster and fish. There are some shots of me in the show getting a little competitive with the fishing and screaming when I eventually caught something.” What an experience it was. She ate weird and wonderful things all over the world in fine dining restaurants, street food from various markets and fresh produce most people cannot even pronounce but for Kamini nothing quite tops the experience of infiltrating the different countries with the people in them. “Eating in all these places was amazing but eating with all the people of those places was the most authentic part of it all”. H A big thank you to the team at the Pick ‘n Pay Good Food Studio for hosting our cover shoot and helping to make it such a success!

Her candid humour peppers all of her stories, keeping you hooked onto her every word. Not one to waste a moment of living, she also took the plunge from the Soweto towers while she was at it. “I think this show has given me vertigo,” she jokes. Inspired by the Pan African influence that roams the streets of Johannesburg, particularly in areas like Hillbrow, Kamini says that Congolese restaurant – Kin Malebo is a must-try if you haven’t tried it – especially the fish braai. It’s the spot to be on weekends with its live music and truly authentic menu from classic Congolese dishes like pesa-nzela grilled tilapia seaweed with garlic and peppers or red fish on a spinach and peanut mélange. Needless to say, Kamini’s Joburg adventure has since seen her hang her hat right here and we’re feeling pretty smug about having her in town. Now for a sneaky taste of what Kamini and Urban Brew have been cooking up for viewers ahead of Girl Eat World hitting the airwaves. Down south in Australia, Kamini met up with Billy Law, former Australian MasterChef contestant who introduced her to the embryo egg. Her face wrinkles as though she imagines trying the seven day germinated duck egg all over again. “It’s a Thai delicacy. I tried a bit of the yolk part which was good but the pieces of feather and beak as it cracked open were a bit much” – we’d have to agree. The Malaysian born foodie is one of the country’s top food and travel bloggers and he and Kamini hit it off instantly. She also mentions the Tiger Meat pie which is very similar to a good ol Shell Garage shop peppered steak pie she admits. “They definitely have strange names for things in Oz.” In Berlin, Kamini met up with Kavita Meeleu, another kindred contemporary. Like peas in a pod, the two foodies got on really well as their food philosophies mulled together. “Kavita is a food revolutionary in her own right. Championing the food markets, ethically produced products and of course local suppliers. She is also nurturing a food creativity in Berlin amongst young people that is

ntroducing Mi Mia, an exciting new decor and clothing range for babies and toddlers launched by interior consultant and mom, Hayley Grinstead. Named after Hayley’s four year-old daughter, Mia Rose who was born in 2011, the Chinese year of the Rabbit, many items in the range feature bunny motifs and all are exceptionally well made, by hand. Hayley explains, “I’ve always appreciated beautifully-made clothing, over labels. There aren’t many labels offering clothes like this for babies and toddlers. I set out to explore the viability of creating a label offering beautifully handmade clothing and accessories for babies and toddlers, that will be passed down through the generations. And hence, Mi Mia was born.” To date, the range includes: Bespoke baby blankets – some combine pure cotton muslin and 100% handmade Merino wool felt, others feature pure felt with inlaid bunny and heart designs; handmade felt slippers topped with pom-poms for babies and toddlers and bespoke felt bunny toys. In the pipeline is a clothing range reminiscent of Laura Ashley for babies and young girls, felt waistcoats for boys and girls and beautiful screen-printed nursery bed linen. All made to last a lifetime... Phone Hayley on 0837477170 or email info@mimia.co.za for more information/to order.

A

ngelo Deboni started his namesake restaurant 15 years ago in Bryanston, creating all the recipes and doing all the cooking himself. After 15 years of success it’s not hard to see why he has extended his family of restaurants to include a new Angelo’s in Parktown North and The Yard, a beer garden situated just behind it. We spoke to Angelo about his love of food and family and why, when you go to one of his restaurants you feel like a part of his family.

What inspired you to create a familyfriendly restaurant? Family-friendly is one way of putting it. Local is my way. I invite the neighbourhood. That means kids too. Traditionally kids are supposed to be seen not heard but in our two restaurants they have the run of the place like it’s their home. I love that!

Let’s just say I struggle to eat anywhere else!
Our pastas are quite special but you can’t beat our pizzas either! When people come to your restaurant, what is the kind of experience they can expect to have?
Like they just joined our family. They can expect to eat sincere food made authentically. Their kids will make friends and talk about their pizza-making days for years to come! H

Easter is one of those occasions that really brings friends and family together around a table of delicious food. As delightful as Easter can be, it’s very easy to get carried away with all the surrounding yumminess. The best way to avoid turning into a round Easter egg yourself is by switching up traditional favourites with “same-same-but-different” healthy alternatives - enter my Rawtella iced Cupcake Bunnies. This recipe is great for the kids too – perfect for a burst of healthy energy, and they will love helping you make them too!

Method 1Combine all ingredients into a blender and blend for three minutes until mixture is light and fluffy. 2 Baking in paper cupcake holders is best to avoid breakage. Place paper cupcake holders into cupcake tray divisions. Spoon batter into paper cupcake holders until half full. Bake cupcakes at 180C°for 30 minutes. Once cooked, remove from oven and allow to cool. 3 To make Rawtella icing: Combine all ingredients for Rawtella into a blender and process at max speed for 1-2 minutes. Coat each cupcake with generous spoonful’s of Rawtella. Sprinkle with cinnamon and desiccated coconut (optional). 5 Place cupcakes in fridge for 15 minutes to allow Rawtella icing to become firm. 6 To make bunnies: Use currants, flaked almonds, apple slices, carrots and dates to create bunny faces. Get the kids to have fun with this part. They will love helping you with this activity. Enjoy! chef of the month

If cooking is a specific science and art, then a chef who can tell you that he has been at a restaurant for exactly two years and two days is the best person for the job. Meet Chef Steven D. LaFountain Jr.

C

hef Steven D. LaFountain Jr. has all the qualities you would expect a creative scientist to have. “I like experimenting with different things and learning other techniques. I thrive on new knowledge.” His love for food is as much about the intricate processes and details involved in the preparation as it is about the taste, texture and flavour. “And compared to past careers, this is not an occupational hazard” he quips. Although with the sharp knives and hot flames we do have to wonder about that. With a Master’s Degree in Culinary Arts and Chef Training, from one of the most prestige’s culinary schools “The New England Culinary Institute” combined with years of experience under some of the most well-known and reputable Chefs, Chef Steven attributes part of his success to his

teachers and mentors. Especially the Chefs at N.E.C.I. (New England Culinary Institute), Chef Gordon Ramsey and of course, his wife. Does he have a signature dish? Of course he does – “every dish I create!”, he remarks. But on a serious note, Chef Steven explains how he prepares all this dishes with equal

Does he have a signature dish? Of course he does - “every dish I create!”, he remarks

As a high end venue, Chef Steven has the extra challenge of balancing the local South African palate with the varying taste of his international guests. By all account he seems to have found the recipe too. “Our international guests enjoy the menu that we have and I try to accommodate their needs when possible, even if it means cooking something that is not on the menu.” As for the most stressful situation in the kitchen to date, try working on New Year’s Eve with a full restaurant but with only three cooks, one of which included Steven. So think twice before you quite your day job. H 20 Maude Street, Sandton 011 884 1400 www.thebullrun.co.za

measures of love and attention so it’s a tough call to ask a dad to choose his favourite kid. “It’s hard to say what my signature dish would be but I have been told that my “Caribbean jerk seasoned and seared Ahi Tuna, served on a bed of Ginger and Lime Napa cabbage, topped off with a Mango and Pineapple Salsa and drizzled with a Wasabi Coulis” was outstanding. Well in that case we’ll have one of those please. But such accolades certainly don’t come easily. The challenges of being in this industry are many. From making sure that you give it your all 24/7, going above and beyond the call of duty and being consistent in anything and everything that you do. Steven believes in blazing your own trail and being recognized for it.

PAIR BEER AND CHOCOLATE THIS EASTER FOR A NON-TRADITIONAL TASTE ADVENTURE

F

or the past six months, Rob Heyns from League of Beers has introduced us to the idea of craft beer and has been educating us in how to taste the golden brew and sound like real beer connoisseurs. This month he discusses the infinite possibilities of beer and chocolate. Wine and chocolate is a bit of a no-brainer, right? Same goes for strawberries. But beer and chocolate? Who woulda thunk? Believe it or not, food and beverage pairings can be done in almost any combination as long as you can find compatible flavours. And beer comes in all kinds of flavours these days, so why not? First rule of thumb: don’t try this with a mass-produced beer. They tend to have a high sodium content, and this won’t work well with anything other than mass-produced chocolates like M&M’s. Save that for the Rugby! STOUTS With stouts, a dark chocolate with a high cacao percentage (70%) is always a good match. The chocolate tends to be bitter, and it’ll help bring out the sweetness in the stout you may not have noticed before. Boston Breweries do an awesome Black River Coffee Stout that will pair well with a dark chocolate. BITTER ALES AND IPA’S With bitter brews, go for a sweeter chocolate with a lower cacao percentage (50%). The sweetness of the chocolate will help alleviate the bitterness of the ale, and they will tend to complement each other. Jack Black have a stunning IPA, The Skeleton Coast, that should do the trick for you. LAGERS AND PILSNERS Some of you may prefer a stronger chocolate, while others may prefer it mild and sweet. The beer itself is centre field enough that you can go either way with your pairing. The only way to find out what your favourite combination is, will be to drink a lot of beer. Sorry for you! Try CBC, Jack Black, or both! WHITE ALES These ales tend to be crisp and refreshing with notes of tropical fruits like banana, so a good chocolate to look for is fruity and rich. Either way chocolate always goes well with banana. Citrus undertones go well in this pairing when using Wit beers, specifically. CBC and Brewers & Union both carry a range of Weiss beers that you can experiment with. Darling have the most popular Wit Beer in SA as well as the only Black Wit, which is reall well suited. FRUIT BEERS Pairing chocolate with fruit is a no brainer, and so is this. Guess what? Any chocolate will do with a fruit beer. This is because the natural acidity of chocolate will help to cut through the sweetness of the beer and balances it well. Liefman’s Fruitesse Fruit Beer is the perfect brew if your chocolate knowledge is non-existent, or you just want to pair it up with whatever you can find in the cupboard. So there you have it. Instead of following the well-trodden path to the wine and chocolate factory, try mixing it up a little and surprise your better half by dragging them off to your nearest brewery for some beer and chocolate. Or you can stock up your fridge from the comfort of your couch with a monthly mixed case and have a romantic night in with the little lady, some chocolates, and a case of beers! Yours in beer! Rob

vegetarian Risotto dish with broad beans, lime, fennel and shitake mushrooms is a reward on its own. The tastes and flavours expertly combine and intertwine to create a gourmet explosion in your mouth (and heart). Each dish is perfectly manicured and attention is paid to intricate details like the garnish, the vegetables that are hand picked from the rooftop garden and even the shoestring fries. It is a state of the art dining experience and the cherry on top has to be the dessert. They offer a light lemon pudding with lemon verbena anglaise and meringue that will

create an everlasting love affair and the baked cheesecake accompanied by a berry jelly and a strawberry and basil salad is as delicate as a dessert ought to be. Most significantly the staff offer a clear and crisp account of the menu and the waiting time. MALE GROOMING AT MIDORI ECO SALON hen Midori Salon owner Anisha Patel was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, she chose the natural route to recovery and her life-changing experience left an indelible mark on her personal philosophy. When Patel decided her next business venture would be a beauty salon, she was keen to put her beliefs into practice and went completely eco-friendly. Determined to use only recycled and organic materials, Patel’s talent as an interior designer was put to the test right from the design phase. Even the location of the salon was purposefully chosen. Green Park in Sandton is basically an eco-park of energyconserving structures conforming to green standards. Even the name Midori itself is symbolic, being the Japanese word for ‘green’. Although the salon is completely unisex, Patel is well aware that the emerging male grooming market is one of the fastest growing markets internationally. Being fans of both the environment and pampering, we went along to experience a grooming session from the male perspective and see if the salon ticked all our boxes. The first thing that struck us upon entering the salon was the lack of any chemical smell, the kind we are used to experiencing in other salons. Patel explained this is because all

Midori’s products are manufactured using natural ingredients – even the empty bottles are sent back to the suppliers to be refilled. After our complimentary welcome drink we went through the list of options available (using the in-house on screen menu reducing the use of paper). Despite an array of options tailored for the male customer, such as hair treatments, facials and massages, we each settled on the one thing that is unique to the male grooming routine – a luxurious shave. The use of natural products was definitely a plus considering one of us has a particularly sensitive skin. One leaves Midori Salon not only feeling good on the outside but, thanks to its environmentally friendly outlook, feeling good on the inside too. Health Diaries: Join MovementX

W

hether you’re Banting, vegan, pescatarian, a gluten free junkie, or lactose intolerant the truth is you need a work out regime. So if you only do one thing this year make sure you join the movement… MovementX. It’s set to be the next big thing in Jozi and I think it’s the ultimate workout. Situated inside Norwood Mall, MovementX invites you to Xplore fitness and Xperience change! Sounds a little intimidating right? Well at least for someone like me, a little unfit, a little inflexible and slightly brittle. However I just had to try this new fixation. I opted for the BarreX (pronounced bar) Class, which is a combination of ballet, and Pilates. HELP! Having never attempted a

ballet class in my life, apprehensive to say the least, I delved right in. The class was not only educational and challenging but I now have a better understanding of the current buzzword ‘movement’ because you do not stop moving - a power 45 minute class where your body becomes a phenomenal machine, able to twist, turn and eliminate those unwanted kilos. Because our modern lifestyle exposes us to junk, pollution and toxins, MovementX is the detoxifying fitness your body craves. The boutique studio is personalised and they offer a wide variety of classes, you’re not stuck with ballet I promise. There is a high intensity interval training class (Xtreme), a Yoga class (fleX), an athletic conditioning circuit (apeX),

a boxing class (bXer) and a Pilate’s class (aXis). BONUS: if you need a post class pick-me-up grab a freshly prepared and squeezed juice from Café X next-door! GLAMLASH - EYELASH EXTENSIONS

H

ello Joburgers it is about time you walk into a room like you own it! Some say eyelash extensions have that kind of power. Now, I am sure there are some of you asking what exactly eyelash extensions are and how long the application process takes. Fortunately we visited Thembi from Glamlash to fill in all the blanks. Thembi explains that eyelash extensions are semi-permanent, synthetic extensions , which are glued individually onto your natural lash. They are an extension of you and your beauty and the procedure takes only two hours for a full set and one hour for a fill.

Most importantly there is zero pain! How many times have we heard the saying “beauty is pain!” well not with Glamlash! There’s no discomfort, no aching and no distress as it is a non-invasive treatment. Plus the best news is that you don’t have to wear mascara ever again. Amen to no clumps and no make-up stained pillowcases. Why not add a touch of glamour to your life? Open up your eyes to fuller, lushlooking lashes. Go and enjoy the holiday parties, but whilst doing so, wear snug, tight fitting clothing ! You will be far too concerned about holding your stomach in than stuffing your face;) One of the biggest no no’s in the fitness game is missing meals. We don’t do this, and we don’t do this during the holidays for an added reason. When people hold back during the day (saving calories), a large percentage of people end up eating everything in sight thereafter, and end up consuming an insane amount of extra unwanted calories. Instead, why not consume all of your regular meals, at your regular times, by the time it comes to holiday event, one will be able to show more restraint with the food. Try to leave the buffet with only two items on your plate. Return as many times as you would like, but again only leave with two items on every return. Be a food snob, when choosing your two food choices by choosing dishes you truly enjoy, and don’t get to eat all that often. Leave all the mundane food that we eat on a daily basis. There is no reason for those extra calories. Trim down the trimmings. Enjoy your food, but limit the amount of sauce, and sides. These all add extra calories that can be avoided, by keeping this in mind. When on the way to the party, pop a piece of sugar free gum into your mouth. This will help to curb your appetite. This also works well when cooking.

3 4 5

WEEKEND EATING PLAN SATURDAY BREAKFAST: Small serving of pineapple. This provides us with energy for the day, due to the carbs in the pineapple. Pineapple also assists in the digestion of proteins, and is regarded as a great choice as a fruit that won’t affect the waistline. • A few Omega rich eggs, are clean and fantastic as your protein at breakfast time. The fat in the eggs are good fats, and won’t be turned into unwanted body fat. • A few slices of avocado will provide more healthy fats, that will not only help with energy, but will also keep you satisfied for longer, due to the fat slowing down the digestion process . MID MORNING SNACK: Small handful of almonds. Again this is full of healthy fats. This will keep you satisfied, and will again provide the body with more energy if needed. LUNCH: Chicken/fish, and veg/salad (whilst still not missing the meal, hold back on the carbs at lunch, you will be getting plenty at the Party /braai later on). This will ensure the tummy is full, and blood sugar more stable, thus preventing binging. MID AFTERNOON: Another small handful of almonds or Macadamias DINNER (PARTY): 15 min before arriving, pop a piece of sugar free gum into your mouth. See above tips on dealing with a buffet. If drinking, choose a drink that will do the least damage, such as Whiskey instead of wine. SUNDAY BREAKFAST: Small fruit salad with a few eggs. Eating a protein at the same time as a carb is important in limiting the Insulin spike, and thus prevents the body from storing as much fat. MID MORNING: Small handful of Almonds. LUNCH: If you are craving something ‘bad’, and want to eat it before the week begins, and diet starts, then this would be your last chance to get it in. Eating the dirty meal here will do a lot less damage, than if eaten at night. MID AFTERNOON: Handful of Almonds. DINNER: At dinner time, eat a ‘nutritional cheat’ What this means is: instead of a burger and chips, have a fillet steak and a baked potato. Eat a meal that is not part of your regular eating plan, but a meal that still has nutritional value to it, instead of a meal that just has empty useless calories. Now that you have the guidelines, go and enjoy the Easter holidays and festivities, and come back fitting into the same clothes! John Lucas 0824189497 fitnessmidpower@yahoo.com HFPA Rivonia Village

ur artist of the month, Senzy Khumalo is a soft-spoken, kind-hearted spirit who hails from Pongola in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Her story as artist starts with her as a young girl experimenting with anything she could get her hands on and expressing herself through colours, patterns and shapes. She recounts that at school (The Temba Trust in Dirkiesdorp where she now teaches), she used to be asked by classmates to do all sorts of projects for them when it came to anything artistic and she gladly accepted! But it wasn’t until she got offered a scholarship by the trust to go and study at Concordia University in California that Senzy truly embraced her artistic side. “I really struggled when it came to deciding what I was going to study. There were expectations for me to do something ‘practical’ but my heart pointed in the direction of the arts”. So Senzy ended up immersed in the world of fine arts, eating up all s r Chalk Serie

the information she could find and embracing this education, not widely offered in the hillsides of KwaZulu-Natal. It was here that Senzy started her first series of paintings, the “Chalk Series”, entitled such because these images are drawn in soft pastel chalks on a black background. “I like how the colour pops out of the darkness”, Senzy explains and it’s easy to see why. Ethereal and magical, her Chalk Series is other-wordly, drawing the spectator in with a soft seduction that is hard to ignore. When Senzy got back to South Africa she went for a different medium: watercolour, and this series is just as impressive although quite different. “I simply couldn’t get hold of the soft pastel chalks I was using in the US so I decided to try a different medium. This time I worked with watercolours on a white background, I didn’t want to create an imposed background but rather just wanted to use it as it was and allow the images to come from that”. Her Watercolour Series (on display at Mzansi Gallery in July), consists of truly South-African inspired pieces of art, full of colour and life. When asked about her inpsiration Senzy explains that it comes through her from a range of different experiences, “It’s not so much a

visual thing or a song or an experience that comes through in my work but rather the feeling that it Just Me from her Watercolour Series gave me”. And her plans for the future? “I WIN this stunning print (above)! Simply go to want to inspire www.mzansi.gallery and others and I want look up Senzy’s watercolour series and tweet the name to continue to teach of one of her paintings art, I love teaching and to @HelloJoburgMag art so the combination using the the gohello hashtag of these is a dream come true”. Senzy feels very strongly about teaching children about the importance of creative gifts which are sometimes neglected in favour of promoting other areas of education. “I want to inspire children and for them to see that if I can make something of myself, following my heart and my creative passion, then they can too”. Q&A Hello Joburg

WITH NEWS ANCHOR

Natasha Thorp

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A NEWS ANCHOR? I come from a family where debate/ discussion has always been encouraged: reading the papers and being aware of what is going on in the world around me. I love to read and I love media in all its forms,so it was natural for me to study journalism, specialising in broadcasting.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING DAY AS A NEWS ANCHOR THUS FAR?

The most challenging day for me was when Simba Mhere passed away. Friends and family had gathered at his home just hours after we learned of his death. I’ve never lost someone close to me; it was a terrible tragedy to lose Simba. A few hours later, I had to be the consummate professional, go to work, dry my tears and headline his death - announcing to the nation that he had been killed. I had to do that as if I didn’t know him; presenting that ‘news item’ while forcing myself not to cry on camera - my heart grieving for my friend. It was the most difficult thing I’ve done.

AS A JOBURG RESIDENT, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TOP THREE FAVOURITE HANG-OUT SPOTS?

38

I am a proud Jozi girl and I love this city. There is always so much going on, many great restaurants and fun spots to be with friends. To mention just three is tricky but... the Hyde Park and Parkhurst areas are great for weekend lunches or the occasional week night get-together. Little gems like Modo Mia or Pronto or 4th Avenue in Parkhurst (if you’re looking for more of a buzz); Bellinis in Illovo is another one of my favourite spots. Joburg also has some great spas for that feeling of a mini-getaway...especially when I can’t actually leave the city: The Saxon; the Four Seasons in Westcliff and the Legacy hotel and Spa in Sandton is also great. Hello Joburg • April 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

WHAT CAUSES ARE YOU ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN?

I’ve always had a heart for issues affecting young girls and women; I proudly speak out against women and child abuse and support campaigns of non violence towards women and children. I often do motivational talks to young girls, to inspire them to be brave, fearless, independent women of substance who can change the world, simply by being different - being women of character. I also want to get more involved in road safety campaigns; the amount of carnage experienced daily on our roads is devastating and is something that can be altered.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

Everybody has a story; everybody has something of value to share and you can learn many things from any individual who crosses your path...whether it’s a single mom or a sports star that you see on T.V. I love people and I let that love, that curiosity, that

interest in other people, inspire me on a daily basis. But if you’re talking about big, global inspirations then someone like Malala Yousafzai (a young Pakistani activist and now Nobel winner) or Thuli Madonsela (Public Protector) who was named in last year’s Time 100 Most Influential...I’d like to be on that list one day.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN JOBURG?

The people; the most friendly, the most willing to embrace every culture. I love that about this city...the way Joburg fills Wanderers for a cricket match, or fills Maboneng to experience the creative hub of Arts on Main, or comes out for the rooftop sundowners to support local musicians and artists...that’s what I love about Joburg. Nothing is too much effort, no one is too busy to come together and experience the vibe and heart of the city with friends and family. I love it. H

T

he world is a funny place. Funny as in being bizarre, isn’t it? I remember not so long ago: microwave ovens making their way into the home and CD players too. Both sounded strange, yet particularly intriguing in their ability to supposedly improve our lives. Okay, so I exaggerate, both these innovative inventions came 30+ years ago, just before Michael J Fox’s 1985 blockbuster, “Back to the Future” - so longer than, “not so long ago”! Fast forward three decades. Now the energy source that powers your microwave oven and the CD version of “Back to the Future” is running your car: electricity! We’re entering a new age in what gets cars going. Nissan was first off the dynamo block with their organically sounding, LEAF. Next to the South African roads are two cars Mr Fox’s character, Marty McFly, would appreciate and could comfortably slot into a reprise within the “Back to the Future” franchise. Both feature out of this world looks, and they are the i3 and i8 BMW’s.

T @DanielCalbacho

THE i3

I

t’s hard to compare the LEAF to other family hatches. It’s a pioneer in its class, being the world’s first electric and affordable family car. As a result, Nissan has sold over 100 000 of them globally. If you go beyond the LEAF’s looks, it’s far more becoming once you have driven and lived with it. The LEAF is one of my favourite cars of all time, and will stand out in my top three cars of 2014. When I first drove it, its immediate power and 195km range, combined with its silent operation are fascinating. It isn’t an evolution in motoring history by any stretch of the imagination, but rather a huge gigantic leap in the revolution of car making. If you have a family with two cars, I urge you to consider the LEAF as a second car.The standard combustion engine car could be used for longer trips, while the LEAF is used for daily commuting. It will be the favourite car in the family, the one everyone will want to drive or be driven in because of its sheer uniqueness. Keeping the batteries topped up is relatively simple, cost-effective (around R30.00 per charge) and a technologically advanced process. Either via a home charge unit - which is supplied with the Nissan LEAF on purchase and allows the vehicle to fully charge from the main electricity supply. Alternatively, via a quick charge unit located at one of the many Nissan LEAF dealers nationwide. Each dealer features a specialised Nissan LEAF quick charge station, which enables an 80% charge from zero in just 30 minutes, free to Nissan LEAF owners. The Nissan LEAF is available through selected Nissan dealers nationwide for R476 000 and comes standard with a 3yr/100 000km mechanical warranty and 3yr/90 000km service plan. BEST SUITED HOTSPOT IN JOZI TO FIND A LEAF: I’d take a guess that you’d find one at Greenside’s organically friendly vegan eatery, Greenside Café, or parked outside Father Coffee under Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein.

THE i8

T

he i8 (opposite page) is spectacular. It’s an art form and a vehicle that highlights BMW’s technological prowess. It looks like it’s from the future and can outrun a Porsche Carrera S, yet it is cheaper to run than a Japanese hybrid, like Toyota’s Prius. The i8 is driven by two power sources. Powering the rear is the MINI Cooper 1.5 three cylinder turbo charged engine, albeit BMW have tinkered with it - so power has been substantially increased. Powering the front wheels is the electric motor. The i8’s body is made of carbon-reinforced plastic and aluminium, which, when the stunning gullwing doors are raised, make it easier to spot this unusual material. The purpose is primarily for weight-saving purposes. The result: 0 to 100km/h in an eye popping 4.4 seconds. So, it looks better than any Lamborghini or Ferrari, but does it drive better than one? Not exactly. You see the i8 is more for show.Yes, it is a sports car, but it looks like a supercar, which it isn’t. But that isn’t a bad thing either, let’s face it, no one is going to a racing track in this gorgeous creature. It’s good at pretending though, fooling onlookers with its superhero looks. It tries to fool its driver too.You see, BMW have piped a soundtrack of an ominous sounding roar through the cars sound system. The soundtrack attempts to mask the cute throbbing noise, which omits from its pintsized three cylinder, that’s hiding mid mounted under the i8. On the down side, those camp flapping doors mean tight parking bays are a no-no. So too is carting luggage, as the boot is ‘compact’. The glass is half full though - you can order bespoke Louis Vuitton luggage, which fits optimally into said ‘compact’ boot. The BMW i8 is available through selected BMW dealers in Gauteng, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban for R1 775 000. The i8 comes standard with a 5yr/100 000km mechanical warranty and 5yr/100 000km service plan. BEST SUITED HOTSPOT IN JOZI TO FIND AN I8: On a Friday evening an i8 could be found discreetly parked at the newly renovated Westcliff Hotel, which is now known as the famous, Four Seasons. On a Sunday, expect to find an i8 parked along the leafy boulevards of Melrose Arch, as its owner unwinds at Winesense, sipping on the finest wines and savouring a cigar.

I

t looks like a manga cartoon: cute, clever and as if it’s from the future. It’s built off an aluminium base and sandwiched together with a feather light carbon fibre body. What this means is either the allelectric or the range extending electric/ petrol motor versions of the i3, are able dart from standstill to 100km/h in just over seven seconds. Despite its new age appearance, the i3 is a true BMW: featuring a rear wheel drive setup and responsive steering system. Though tall, the i3 doesn’t suffer from body roll either. This cocktail of instant power and driverfocused dynamics makes for a fun car in a playful looking package. Plug this pug into a three pinned power source and it’ll take you ten hours to get its gauge to read full and would get you an average range of 130km. The cabin features Zen-like minimalism, using recycled materials throughout. A gorgeous option, which adds a contemporary edge, is a eucalyptus wood inlay. Though brilliant for around town, with the benefit of good view of the road, the i3 isn’t perfect. It is fitted with firm suspension, which combined with 19” rims exacerbates maters: imagine Hillary Clinton in a bad mood. From a utility perspective you would expect more, in fact a 1 Series BMW features greater practicality and is strictly a four seater. The BMW i3 is available through selected BMW dealers in Gauteng, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban for R525 000 for the eDrive and R595 000 for the eDrive REx range extender. Both models come standard with a 5yr/100 000km mechanical warranty and 5yr/100 000km service plan.

HOURS in Jozi Riding in style with a Mini CooperS M

46

1ST STOP: Happiness is... waking up to the glowing, glistening Mini CooperS. The car solicits a show off moment and Parkhurst 4th avenue is just the place. Cruising down the bustling streets with the Hi-fi Harman Kardon loudspeaker system, you’re impossible to ignore. As the engine revs up in sports mode, the LED ring on the centre instrument shines Hello Joburg • April 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

white, orange, red and vavavoom! You’ve made a statement. Parking is no problem as there is PDC front and rear! Pop out to the Coffee Roasters on 4th and grab a 100% Arabica cuppa and a warm croissant. Sorted. www.4thavenuecoffee.co.za

2ND STOP: The Mini is a decision that revolves around style and because this sexy beast boasts a streak of culture, put the clutch into drive and head on down to Circa on Jellicoe. The CIRCA building is now recognized as one of Johannesburg’s most outstanding architectural landmarks, juxtaposed with the Mini, I’d say it’s a picture perfect moment. Browse through the exhibitions of Liza Grobler’s contemporary works of art. www.circaonjellicoe.co.za 3RD STOP: Maboneng, meaning ‘Place of Light’ is the ideal location to showcase the CooperS especially since downtown Johannesburg is in the midst of a revival. Tear up the streets at sunset and scream for attention with the LED fog lights and LED

headlights, it’s what really makes this car stand out (not forgetting the turbo engine). And as the adaptive suspension springs into action, giving you a hit of that legendary go-kart feeling you’ve now had a small taste of the exhilaration of Formula1. Head on over to the Living Room for a sundowner, it’s definitely worth the pit stop. www.mabonengprecinct.com

4TH STOP: Above you the city lights beckon, and the Mini CooperS glides effortlessly into the night sky. The final stop is at the retro-chic Jazz club - The Orbit. A venue is reborn in Braamfontein, a booming and dynamic part of town, The Orbit is a spicy destination and the Bistro is perfect for dinner. Toast with a glass of wine and indulge in live jazz music. You will certainly come to life. www.theorbit.co.za H

ick Jagger once said “lose your dreams and you might lose your mind.” And after my love affair with the Mini CooperS my dreams have never been more advanced. The simple truth is 24 hours is just not enough time in this beautiful machine. The Mini CooperS Hatch - 5 door has timeless appeal. It’s a wellgroomed vehicle and is stylish, modish and rather dapper. I had the privilege of taking a Peppered White Mini through its paces in and around the city of gold and let me tell you, this vehicle begs to be driven. Powered by a 2-litre engine, Mini twin power Turbo 4 cylinder the CooperS handles beautifully. This vehicle is top of the line with its 192-hp/141 kW engine, which aggressively delivers up to 300Nm of torque. The nimbleness and swiftness of the car stems from the high power-to-weight ratio enabling an easy drive through the city. Beyond the run flat tyres, chrome-line interior and panorama glass sliding sun roof (two to be exact) you get a comfortable, cocooned ride; you get a driving familiarity that will bring out the beast within.

n the mood for a little romance? Located in the Cradle of Humankind, Forum Homini boutique hotel has a dreamy, serene atmosphere which will have you relaxed and romanced throughout your stay. If like me, you’d like to unwind in the lap of luxury then this is just the place. And yes I have had hotel romances before, but this was different. I could gladly commit to returning at least once a year. With only 12 standard luxury suites and one romantic honeymoon suite, it makes for an intimate stay. The rooms are grandiose and lavish and because they are tucked away in a deluxe cave-style environment, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in another world. The rates include dinner and breakfast and that’s advantageous because your stay is incomplete without a visit to the five star restaurant, Roots - worth the trip itself.

“Most of the produce used in roots is locally sourced, but more specifically from our direct surrounds, ensuring superlative standards of freshness and quality.” To say that each dish at the Roots restaurant is sumptuous and sophisticated is an understatement. The food is eye-wateringly spectacular and the best news is it is served in six courses. Let me tickle your taste buds and tantalise your senses: the first course was the Tuna Tartar which is light and stunning served with rocket, egg, tarragon, potato chips, verjus cubes, pickled onion and oyster custard; then the delightful Kabeljou accompanied with peas, artichoke, grapes, porcini and dried enoki; followed by the succulent duck breast. Fourth course was a delicious Pork Loin and dessert was a Hazelnut Pot O Crème with coffee jelly, apricot sorbet, short bread and coco nib soil as well as a Seasame and Plum

display with sesame ice-cream, gooseberries, sable pistachio and the sweetest wax honey. A 10 out of 10. So go on, add some romance to your life and explore this secluded sanctuary. it’s time to liven up your living spaces with small luxurious touches that remind you to take precious time out with a cup of tea and a good book. Keep things smart-casual yet trendy by creating unusual cushion pairings on your couch or favourite chair. We love the combination of these printed boldly with whimsical sayings and others with jewel-coloured, overblown florals. Add classic heart-shaped pieces and tea set items in all manner of florals (no cup needs to be the same) and your space feels modern, chilled and creative. Mr Price Home 031 310

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za
