ELLO JOBURGERS!
Kamini Pather is living the dream since MasterChef. Originally from Cape Town, she tells us why she loves Joburg, and what is keeping her busy. Listen to her every Tuesday morning at 10h40 on Heart 104.9FM, where she is the guest presenter on a feature called My Favourite Things. We also chat to and get to know outstanding Joburg businesswomen, presenters, DJs and actresses, such as Leigh-Ann Mol, Sureshnie Rider and Poppy Ntshongwana. Wanting to celebrate Women’s month with your special lady or ladies in your life? Hello Joburg recommends five ‘high tea’ spots to choose from, where you can sip on unusual blends of tea and indulge in decadent delights – think pomegranate and orange tea, kiwi and cherry tea, and Earl Grey tea. We Joburgers are lucky to have a Washington DC, award-winning chef in our midst. Formidable and passionate, Carole Greenwood moved here about a year ago. She is first and foremost a restaurant chef, always up for a challenge. After seeing her successfully get the Bannister hotel’s restaurant up and running, we follow her latest ventures as she introduces us to unique restaurant concepts and flavours. Need some end-of-winter retail therapy or pampering? We introduce you to Henriette Botha Jewellery; Romy Spiro – the entrepreneur behind Fabulash semi-permanent eyelashes; and a hidden Joburg gem – Hands on Retreat. From two-hour pampering, to half- and full-day spa treatments, and ‘burnout sleep and spa packages’, the Retreat is a perfect place for ‘me-time’ or ‘us-time’. At Hello Joburg, we are delighted to celebrate women, not forgetting the meaning behind this month.

introduction to comedy fans - over the years his outlook on everything South African has earned him a strong following.
The Market Theatre and Windybrow Theatre presents an Eric Abraham and Fugard Theatre production of The Shadow of the Humming Bird. Athol Fugard, who returns to the stage this year after an absence of 15 years, plays opposite Marviantos Baker in this intimate, delicate two-hander. In The Shadow of the Humming Bird, Fugard takes on the role of Oupa, a retired South African teacher living in self-imposed exile in Southern California, and is joined onstage by Baker, playing his grandson, Boba. During the course of one afternoon spent together, Oupa and Boba leap across a generational divide to teach and be taught, and to be reminded that the transient beauty of the world is seen too briefly through unassuming eyes.

JOBURG FINALLY HAS ITS OWN CREPERIE
HOLY MAMA ROCOMAMAS HITS JOBURG
Joy to the world! The crêpe heavens have answered our prayers. Johannesburg has its very own crêperie and I could not wait to dig in. Arbour Café is located in Birdhaven, which is an ever so stylish, up and coming hub.
Ask any Joburger and they will tell you what their favorite burger joint is at the moment: Rocomamas! It’s at the top of everyone’s minds and at the tip of everyone’s tongues. But why you may ask? Well if you haven’t tried the most awesome burgers in all of the land then you won’t understand. You can’t fathom the juicy goodness, you won’t comprehend the culinary delight and you certainly won’t be able to grasp the yumminess that is Rocomamas. To put it mildly Rocomamas is the dream team. It is the cherry on top, it is the jam to the peanut butter sandwich. In one month I have visited the restaurant three times and I’m a vegetarian! So let me explain. Rocomamas make first-class meaty, beefy Smashburgers, however, their veggie burger is delicious too! The secret behind each burger (beef, chicken and veggie) lies in the essence that each ingredient is made from scratch. Yes that’s correct: the chili mayo, the Italian relish, the saffron chili chutney and the patties are all made from scratch. Another cool factor? You get the option to create your very own Smashburger. Grab a bit of feta, rocket, emmentaler, hot sauce, bacon or smokey mayo or why not grab them all. And all this for only R35 plus your toppings. So not only is the food fresh and the flavor heavenly it is also affordable! Slap on some shoestring fries and you are good to go! Hello Johannesburg August 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za
What comes to mind when I say the word crêperie? I would presume connotations of a French style café, something continental, fabulous, voguish, modish. Maybe, like me, you may be picturing a French man with a moustache (named Gustav of course) blowing kisses your way as he tilts his beret in your direction. Not? Okay maybe I got ahead of myself with Gustav, however, the owner Robyn Timson ticked every little box when creating this darling crêperie. The best part of it all is the outdoor courtyard, filled with rays of sunshine and gleams of delight. Happiness is… a galette with crumbled brown sugar, a pop of cinnamon and a squeeze of lemon. (If, like me, you didn’t know what a galette is, Wikipedia states a galette is a “term used in French cuisine to designate various types of flat round or freeform crusty cakes”). Basically it is a fancy pancake, however. slightly more savory. Now the next few sentences I am about to divulge will blow your socks off! Ready? Duck and cherry galette. Yummy! Next, smoked salmon and cream cheese galette topped off with a fried egg and lastly, wild mushroom galette, filled with melted cheese bits and herbs. Completing the feast is a glass of the finest French cider and… Voilà! But wait, the finale is vital! I then devoured a vegan style cheesecake, a banting cheesecake (gluten free, sugar free.) It didn’t stand a chance! Nom nom nom.

The Krone Night Nectar is a sophisticated Cap Classique which is fruity and generous with a satisfying touch of sweetness. This bottle-fermented and lees-matured sparkling wine, a blend of the traditional Champagne varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, is named in honour of the once practised Krone tradition of night harvesting. It has a creamy, fine mousse and shows expressive aromas of baked golden apples and almonds. Refreshing lemon curd and subtle marzipan flavours fill the palate and linger on the aftertaste, leaving the taste buds calling for more.

DAVID HIGGS CREATES A CASTLE MILK STOUT ULTRA SMOOTH ICE CREAM What do you get if you combine a leading chef, an ice-cream maker and South Africa’s first nitrogenated beer? A flavour explosion, if David Higgs and Paul Ballen’s Castle Milk Stout Ultra Smooth pairing at the Cambridge Food Festival was anything to go by. “I had made a Valrhona dark chocolate waffle with honeycomb and salted caramel which I thought would pair beautifully with a Castle Milk Stout Ultra Smooth ice-cream,” said Higgs. So he approached Ballen of Paul’s Homemade Ice-Cream fame and put him to work churning out the once-off product. Ballen, who has made a stout and milk chocolate ice-cream previously, said he wanted to create something which would “blow David away”. “It was an honour to be asked by such a highly regarded chef to create something for him, so I had to make sure it was even better than my best,” he said. The Ultra Smooth syrup was added to a Crème Anglaise base of egg yolk, milk, cream and sugar, with molasses for colour and flavour. “I wanted to highlight the elements of the beers, like the flavour of the molasses and bring these out in the ice-cream,” he said. As for Chef Higgs, he loved the pairing. “The smooth texture of the ice-cream was a brilliant contrast to the honeycomb’s crumbly texture – absolutely delicious.”

WOMAN’S MONTH
KAMINI PATHER Kamini puts the feisty into Women’s month this August
Q+A with Kamini HJ: Favourite spot to eat/drink in JHB? KP: I love Braamfontein. Those Jozi kids just take the scene to a whole new level. The food at Daliah’s, Post and Love Food is exceptional. People watching in that area is also second to none! I’m also a fan of YOLO (pity about the name) and Salvation in Melville. On the pilot for my TV series I will get to do a walking tour of Yeoville and eat a smilie. I cannot wait to experience that side of Jozi! HJ: Message for the ladies for Women’s month? KP: Be comfortable in your skin - the rest will follow. And always wash your makeup off. HJ: Any plans for Women’s Day? KP: I’m working with The Lunch Box Fund and will be spending some time with the kids decorating cupcakes. It’s not only girl children who will be present but they’re kids who don’t have care givers who invest time in them. I also know high school dance season is upon us and I would like to donate my matric dance dress to Joanne Strauss’ NGO Princess Project. I would like to be able to give that gift to a young woman. Kamini Pather is living the dream. Having recently signed with Heart FM to do a weekly lifestyle feature and getting ready to shoot the pilot for her own TV series, Girl.Eat.World, the MasterChef Season 2 winner has certainly leveraged her big win. In her own words “Life really is beautiful when you get to live your truth. I have MasterChef to thank for so much. “ Being Women’s month we put the lid on the pot for a bit to chat about non-food things (but don’t worry, we’ll get back to that, obviously). Proudly female yet quite the tomboy, Kamini believes she would be a good mother to a girl child as growing into her own femininity was a challenge. She was certainly not the pink and frills type but that has translated into her own strength within her very female form. “My name, Kamini (pronounced like harmony) means essence of a woman. I feel as though I would be understanding or
12
able to help a young woman grow into herself with confidence and grace. I love that being a woman means that my strength and vulnerability sit side-by-side. “ And the downside to being a member of the so called fairer sex? “The one thing that I hate about being a woman is the nastiness that women inflict on each other. So often the competition becomes more important than the similarities.” Originally from Cape Town, Kamini admits that she never thought she would adore JHB as much as she has. “There is something raw and unmaintained about it that really speaks to me. The city is so intrinsically African in a way that I understand as a South African and from an outside perspective. It adds that African spin on everything from food to fashion. I also love the do or die nature of the business part of the city. Stuff happens.”
Hello Johannesburg August 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za
So turning the heat up again, Kamini says that for anyone who wants to be in the food industry, just eat everything. Sounds good to us. “Bottom line is that to cook good food, you must be able to taste what the difference between good and mind blowing is. Educate your palate and your senses. The rest can be taught.”
a better sense of self. “I became more confident in myself and my cooking ability” It clearly paid off when she came back for season two. “Be aware of your world so that you see opportunities and don’t walk into things blindsided. That’s often where the fear sets in. “
And advice for young women afraid to live their dreams like Kamini has?
Still single, Kamini is too busy building her empire to date right now but of course has thoughts on the ideal man. “The ideal man for me would be driven, takes pride in his appearance, be kind and honest, fun and light-hearted. I’m a strong personality and I would need to be with someone who wasn’t afraid to be both gentle and stand his ground. I enjoy a challenge so I guess there would need to be that too” But take note gents, the deal breaker is smoking. That’s a non-negotiable.
“It’s easy to say things like “trust yourself” and “you can do it” but in practice it’s often difficult. I would ask that girl to think about who she is and where she wants to be in five years and trace back to what is stopping her. A good plan sometimes takes the fear out of taking the plunge.” Kamini admits that she had entered the first season of MSA and chickened out but that was ok. In that year she has the opportunity to gain

DINING OUT Eat, drink and be merry!
THE BULL RUN A restaurant of unrestrained class in a remarkable location. Indulgence. Elegance. Memories. With more than thirteen years existence the Bull Run is certainly a wealth of good taste. Based in the heart of the most affluent hub in South Africa, it is no wonder the Bull Run is the preferred steak house for many South Africans. The Bull Run defines relaxed comfort whilst still ticking all the culinary boxes. It knows how to best provide for its customers and to provide the very best in service and food. Since the restaurant (located on 20 Maude Street, Sandton) is so close to the JSE Exchange it seems fitting that the menu correlates to the environment. The menu is displayed in stock price format and each item is shown in SA Rands, US Dollars, Pounds and Euros. The aim was to create a richly textured menu coupled with a goodlooking interior. Opt for a matured piece of meat and a glass of wine. The Bull Run being an upmarket

steakhouse is of course renowned for its succulent steaks. The sirloin, rump, fillet and fillet mignon are popular, however, if you prefer something slightly unusual, the ostrich fillet is sumptuous. And who doesn’t love a stack of spare ribs, glazed and glorious (available in pork or beef)? The meat is of great importance but so are the sides and that is certainly one of the highlights of your meal. Chose from the creamiest creamed spinach, the sweetest honey baked butternut or crunchy fried onion rings. The creamy mash potato is also an absolute winner! They have not forgotten about the herbivores either. The gnocchi and parmesan cream is delicious whilst the Thai corn and coconut curry sends the taste buds on an adventure. The restaurant truly caters for each

individual’s needs and always raises its game. The standard of food is spectacular and if there is one thing South Africans appreciate, it is high quality food and excellent wine. The Bull Run has created its very own signature blend of wine. It’s created in the Stellenbosch wine lands where the distinctive quality of grapes is evident. The blend is available in a red or white option. The authentic and honest meals correlate perfectly with The Bull Run’s trademark bottle of wine. Parallel to the uniqueness of the wine is the butchery inside the restaurant where you can buy your own meat. It seems prodigious that you can take a little piece of your Bull Run experience home. The restaurant ages their own meat and creates their own burger patties, that is why their burgers are always fresh and bursting with superior flavor. If you crave an express lunch, the
Bull Run also has a New York style kiosk. Grab a burger or hotdog with a cold drink or go for a prego roll and a light glass of wine. The Bull Run Restaurant places their stamp of greatness on their brand and products. Their brand exudes a warmth and age, which is impossible not to appreciate and respect. Johannesburg needs a significant stature, hauteur as such, and the Bull Run lends to our city’s confidence and decorum. That is why people such as Ryk Neethling, Leon Schuster, Derek Watts, Lucas Radebe and Schalk Burger have signed the menu. PARC FERME RESTAURANT Pure pleasure at Parc Ferme Restaurant
WIN! When a Joburger searches for an ideal restaurant in the heart of the city, Parc Ferme restaurant is certainly the finest option. For those who recognise the opportunity to feast in such opulence, relax in such comfort, the decision to dine at Parc Ferme is everything but complicated. Commenting on the overall look and feel of the restaurant, one would say in addition to the crystal chandeliers and lavish loungers that the location is of premium excellence. Located on Maude Street in Sandton the restaurant exudes class, elegance, romance and of course total luxury.
Luxury is no longer defined by price but by style and characteristics. People are willing to pay for quality and value. The restaurant is all about experiencing charm and delivering excellence. There is a smoking area where one can sit in five-star luxury, light a cigar and enjoy the finest cocktail. The area is also ideal to host a function, engagement or seminar of around forty people. If you are feeling really generous your guests can sip on the finest cognac, Louis XIII or why not opt for a bottle of the rarest and finest French cognac - Delamain.
Another defining quality is the lavish fireplace, to shelter you from the winter chill and relish in after work drinks on a Friday. Even better, indulge in an express lunch. You can dine in an ornate setting and savor delicious seafood pasta for just R95 or a hearty rump steak, egg and chips for a mild R75. When a healthy, nourishing and wholesome eatery opens, it’s always a hot topic. Krunch fresh xpress is no exception. About two months ago Krunch opened its doors in Sandton City Shopping Centre. Can we just discuss the concept for a moment? You get to design your very own meal for only R45. You select a base: choose a salad, sandwich or wrap. You then select three house items, one deli item, one garnish, one krunch, a superfood, a dressing or spread and you are done. This concept allows you to eat what you want. It is your choice and your discretion. UHH…MOUTHFEEL? WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?
Rob Heyns from League of Beers is intent on educating us in craft beer. Having already discussed the flavour, colour and aroma of craft beer, today he discusses something many of the beer plebs don’t think about: the ‘mouthfeel’ of a beer. ‘Mouthfeel’ might not be a term that you hear very often - unless you are donning a beard and rolled up skinnies and regularly frequenting beer tastings. The big secret is that it isn’t an intimidating phrase at all: quite literally, ‘mouthfeel’ means how the beer feels in your mouth. (Yup, no rocket science here I’m glad to report.) Here’s your list of how to test the ‘mouthfeel’ of a beer: Step 1: After taking your initial sip and writing down any key flavours you pick up, take another sip and focus on the body of the beer. Step 2: Swill this sip around and make sure the amber gold reaches your teeth, palate and gums. Now think about how you would describe the sensation – does the liquid seem thick like gravy or thin like water? (Hopefully it won’t taste like either of those things. If it does, make sure that you are, in fact, tasting beer.)
rect vocabulary and get you to start thinking about the body of the beer. Here are some keywords to set you on your way: Smooth or soft – a silky sensation. Medium - when all else fails, this is a safe description to use. Full – not describing quantity, but rather viscosity due to the sugar thickening the beer. Creaminess – pretty self-explanatory, leaves a layer on your palate and tongue, think of Guinness or Kilkenny. Effervescence or carbonation – use this when the bubbles are noticeable, it sounds better than saying fizzy, like a Saison or Weizen. The biggest thing is to have fun when tasting craft beer. Grab your thesaurus and notepad and go wild! Yours in beer, Rob @leagueofbeers
Step 3: Now swallow and write down the first thing that comes to mind. These notes might not always be winners (try steer clear of notes like “great beer” or “yeach”) but they’ll help you start using the cor-

YOUNG GUNS R
Hello Johannesburg August 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za
The promotional posters hinted at what was to come. Any doubt was dispelled on 10 July with a wine tasting that began by blaring Twisted Sister’s 80’s anthem “I Wanna Rock”. And rock they did! Eight talented young winemakers stormed the Joburg wine scene presenting wines that flouted convention, pushed boundaries, and rocked the worlds of the 150 lucky guests who had a ticket to Young Guns IV at the University of Joburg. The brainchild of Roland Peens, Young Guns identifies emerging talented winemakers many of whom still work for established wineries and gives them a stage to showcase their passion and wine. Each winemaker had the opportunity to showcase two wines to his/her choice of music and chat to the audience for about 15 minutes. The event has been sold out in Cape Town and Johannesburg since its inception proving that consumers are keen to taste wines from these relative newbies. If there is a common thread across the team – it is passion, integrity and a desire to make wine with as little intervention as possible. First to present his wines was John Seccombe of Thorne & Daughters; his “Tin Soldier” and “Rocking Horse” echoed the simple, honest, old school yet ridiculously passion-
ate approach he and his wife, Tasha, take to their wine, food, photography and other pursuits. Rousanne, Chenin, Semillon Blanc and Semillon Gris make up the artfully blended and moreish Rocking Horse. Tin Soldier is a blend of Semillon Blanc and Gris that spent ten days on the skins giving it a savoury, slightly oxidative character. Both are intriguing and complex with fruit and herbal notes dancing across the palate. Next up was Francois Haasbroek from Blackwater Wines (formerly with Waterford); a hit with the ladies, judging by the tweets on the live interactive twitter feed asking him to bare his chest! Sourcing fruit from specific vineyards across the Cape, the wines are honest and reflect their origins instead of being masked by wood and manipulated in the cellar. “Exemption 60” is an intriguing, crisp Bourboulenc at just 10.6% alcohol (SA’s first ever bottling of this French variety). His “Noir” is an inky blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache that is velvety and supple. Johan Meyer showcased his JH Meyer Signature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Featured last year as well, the natural, unfined and unfiltered wines were once again a hit. His Elgin grapes are transformed and inspired by travels that include New

Zealand and the USA. The Chardonnay actually stops fermenting in the winter and reawakens in the spring; the palate is full of zesty citrus and small white floral notes. The Pinot Noir is whole bunch fermented and has a silky feel in the mouth. Johan is the winemaker at Swartland’s Mount Abora. Proving that big things come in small packages was the petite Marelise Janse Van Rensburg – winemaker at Beaumont who makes her own wines under the Momento label. And these wines packed quite the powerhouse punch. Using lesser known Portuguese varieties like Verdelho (blended with Chenin) and a lively Tinta Barocca ; these wines are decidedly fresh, elegant and interesting. Flying the flag for Stellenbosch were Mick and Jeanine Craven. He is with Mulderbosch, she is with Dornier and together they make Craven wines. On offer were a cloudy Craven Clairette which has yet to be bottled; any concern over the cloudiness dissipated on tasting the lemon/ lime nuanced and highly textural gem (coming in November 2014). The Craven’s Pinot Noir was fresh, focused and light bodied with great purity of fruit. Swerwer (Afrikaans for vagabond or traveller) Wines are produced by
Jasper Wickens. The Chenin Blanc displayed a rare depth and clarity while still being juicy and rustic. Swerwer red is a yummy blend of old vine Cinsaut, Grenache and Syrah that seemed to hum in the mouth. One can easily taste that these wines are made from the same deft hands. Jacques de Klerk missed his flight to Joburg after the Cape Town feastivities the night before. While working at the Winery of Good Hope, he crafts his Reverie Chenin; a beautiful wine full of great texture and body yet crisp and youthful too. Extended time on the skins and lees contact lend an air of complexity and the wine seems to unravel in the mouth like a ball of yarn! After the formalities of the tutored tasting, a soup soiree allowed folks to nibble and casually mingle with the winemakers and enjoy a glass of one of Wine Cellar’s imported wines. Former Young Guns have included Chris & Suzanne Alheit of Cartology and Peter Allan Finlayson of Crystallum. Both have gone on to achieve critical acclaim locally and internationally. Only time will tell but you might want to hedge your bets that you’ll be hearing a lot more from this year’s Young Guns. By Debi van Flymen

HEALTH & WELLNESS Pamper: to treat with excessive indulgence

REST, RECOVER AND RECHARGE AT HANDS ON RETREAT Tucked away below Hyde Park Shopping Centre, just off Jan Smuts Avenue, lies an absolute Joburg gem - Hands on Retreat. Martina Laurie and her dedicated staff run this fourstar boutique retreat and spa nestled on a large country-like property in Craighall - it’s like a secret garden with large established trees and birds, a stream runs through the property and many rest areas are dotted in between the flower beds in the shade. Two hour pamper sessions to half and full day spa packages are on offer. A range of professional treatments can be enjoyed outside on the wooden deck overlooking the stream, or in one of the garden rooms. Manis and pedis, chilli wrap slimming solutions and hair maintenance are also on offer – it’s a one-stop beauty salon and pampering spa. When you’ve completely relaxed and feel like a bite to eat, try a light breakfast or lunch or high tea (the carrot cake is delicious). The restaurant is also welcome to the public for breakfast and lunch and a romantic three- or four-course
dinner can be booked on Friday and Saturday nights. Like everything at Hands On Retreat, emphasis is on relaxing and resting so be prepared to embrace the ‘slow movement’ of food preparation. Hands On Retreat can accommodate 12 people for the night (there are six rooms), and weekends at this tranquil setting are not only popular with couples, but also particularly with women in Joburg on business or with women wanting to leave their stresses behind for the weekend. As Martina notices, “sometimes a person checks in and I don’t see them for the weekend until they check out. They are perfectly content to order room service, choose dvds from the library and be able to completely relax.” Martina specialises in completely meeting the needs of women. Here’s some background to the retreat – it’s truly impressive and inspirational. Martina started the retreat in 2009 in time for the 2010 World Cup Soccer. It was born out of Hands on Treatment, a mobile massage business that offered quick neck and shoulder massages
to companies with a high number of employees, like call centres. By 2010, Martina’s original team of four people had grown to 30. Over time the beauty salon, restaurant and a focus on corporate packages were introduced. There are definite future plans – a branch is set to open in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban by the end of the year. Martina is passionate about job creation and empowering women, and especially local community upliftment. Therapist are thoroughly trained and skills continually developed. Today, she employs 60 women, of which 96% are female and 98% are of colour. Lash extensions are the latest beauty craze. Strong, sexy woman all around our city have them. So I had to find out more and get to grips with some luscious lashes. It’s time to get Fabulashed. Fabulash specialises in semi-permanent eyelash extensions. Romy Spiro started the business in 2011 after spending a few years climbing the corporate ladder and feeling unfulfilled. So she did what most of us don’t; she took a courageous leap forward and with her marketing experience, passion for beauty and glamour she spotted a gap in the market and embarked on building a brand from the ground up. Q. Why beauty and specifically why eyelashes? A. I think I could hold an eye shadow brush before I could hold a pen. From a very young age I loved playing with makeup. I started going for eyelash extensions as soon as I heard about them, however, I could never find anyone that could apply them to my liking. I thought I would capitalise on this opportunity, and thus Fabulash was born. Q. What kind of lashes should one get? A. The most important thing is to ensure you are getting semi-permanent individual extensions by a trained and experienced technician.
Q. August is Wwomen’s month. What are your tips on how to be a self-assured and confident woman? A. I think knowledge inspires confidence. If there is something you want to learn ask questions, read and empower yourself. There is nothing more attractive than an intelligent woman. Q. As a young female entrepreneur how do you stay inspired? A. I surround myself with strong, confident, successful people that inspire me and support me in being the best version of myself. From turquoise nights to berrylicious pinks, manicures are a hot trend alert! Mix fuchsia with tangerine, violet with blue and aqua with sparkles. This season’s hottest movement is the manicure. Luckily we have found just the artist for you - Kelli Cherri is a genius. She has a prowess for all things pretty and she possesses a mastery for manicures. Born and bred in Japan she has taken Joburg by the horns and she is not letting go. Kelli is nail artist and imports all her products from overseas. She refuses to restrict herself and allows only for the best quality

JOZI DAY TRIPS Midyear malaise settling in? Never fear when Hello Joburg is near. It may not always be viable to pick up and skip the city for a few days, but there are plenty of things to do to create some distance from the city smoke and traffic. Cradle of Humankind Right so no list of Gauteng day trips would be complete without mention of The Cradle of Humankind. So let’s get it out of the way. Give or take 50kms from Joburg you will come across the much sought after World Heritage Site which attracts locals and tourists alike. I can hear you mumbling ‘what a mission’ but the truth is that a day in the Cradle can actually be a pretty spectacular affair. Especially if you catch the sun rising.

If you haven’t visited the Maropeng Visitor Centre with its fossils on display and interactive self-guided tour back in time then make the time to take the family. You can also take an underground tour of the Sterkfontein Caves where archaeologists have made some important finds such as “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot”. And all that exploring can certainly whip up a monster appetite. Lucky for you there are no shortages of palate pleasures. There is something endearing about South Africa’s Kingdom of Pleasure (even though some of the hotel beds are some times anything but pleasant – but hey, this is just a day trip and not a weekend) so take our advice. If you are making your way to the home of the Valley of the Waves for the day make sure it’s sizzling hot. Take the kids for a dip in the waves, mess ice-cream all over yourselves and take ridiculous selfies with all the gaudy décor. NIGHTLIFE For those sleepless nights
JOZI GUIDE
NIGHTLIFE
HOW DID IT GET SO LATE SO SOON? IF ONLY DR SEUSS HAD KNOWN ABOUT BRAAMFONTEIN… Once a part of Johannesburg dotted with tertiary institutions, malls, plenty of office space and littered with general corporate comings and goings, today Braamfontein’s streets are paved with psychedelic colours and bold music notes. Braamies has become a magnetic hub of fun, energy and pop culture. When the sun’s out on the weekend, people flock to the Neighbourhoods Market for a glass of champas on the roof or amble towards Arts on Main for a gourmet lunch. But as the sun sets, a different energy settles over the district. It’s an energy that lets you do and be anything you like – from a cyclist to poet, jazz enthusiast or general night owl. Braamfontein’s night life is as diverse as the different cuisine aromas that fight for your attention as you walk the streets. On the corner of Juta and De Beer Street Braamfontein is Anti Est, a brand new spot that from the outside looks like just another funky craft cocktail bar – which it is, considering they specialise in all things craft. But it’s really so much more. Roxanne Read is one of the only female contenders on the competitive molecular mixology circuit. She can mix, shake, invent, create and light up any martini glass as good as any hipster looking barman with a grey beret, braces holding up his (grey) pants and a moustache (seemingly the bartender look of the season, in case you haven’t noticed). Roxanne explained the thinking behind Anti Est: “it’s not just a bar. We have tried to create a space for free thinkers, where we encourage the philosophy that thinking is free, and to question everything you know. People have stopped communicating correctly, they are too quick to rely on media and social
networks to generate their opinion of life. We want you to go back to organic thoughts and convo, much like the concept of craft food and beverages, where products are stripped of mass produce elements and taken back to their original wholesome roots.” And the people are picking up exactly what Roxanne is putting down. #UNLEARN has become the official tag line generated by people who have experienced the bar. Also a platform for local development of the arts for the area, you will find local artist’s work peppered on the walls. From poets, installation performances, buskers to many a young and upcoming dj spinning the decks, Anti Est plays stage to various new entertainers. Now cycling may not sound like the wildest activity for a night out in Braamies but Critical Mass is seriously fun. The free, unofficial, unsupported group ride that takes place on the last Friday of the month has attracted everyone from your recreational cyclists to the hipsters still learning to ride a bike and they all seem to be loving it. There are some good people in the world and the ‘Think Bike’ motorcycle chaperones tag along to keep the cyclists safe but there are no road closures and participation is at your own risk – although there is always safety in numbers. While it may sound like something totally new, Critical Mass has been around since 2007 as a way to bring more people back into the city and raise awareness about the viability of bicycles as a form of transport in and around Joburg. Clearly it’s working. From the bike obsessed to the beer impressed comes Kitcheners Carvery Bar – the second oldest pub in
the city in fact – is the place to go if you’re looking for a party. Over 100 years old with all the original bits and bobs, it’s now home to a very different crowd than the last century. A venue that has a progressive music policy and has been known to heave with indie gigs, Afro beats and everything in between. So if you fall out of the straight Rock or Pop music genres and you’re not completely sure where you fit – take Kitcheners for a spin around the block. Same same but different is The Great Dane. Spectacular gourmet boerie rolls by day and one hell of a party as the night rolls in. Have you tried Jazz Club and Bistro, The Orbit in De Korte Street? If you are reading this probably not so allow us to enlighten you on one of Braamfontein’s newest gem giving the local Jazz community a warm place to station a double bass and a saxophone. Pretty new to the inner city circuit having opened in March this year, rumour has it that The Orbit has managed to book artists for every available slot for its first three
months as it attracts both local and international artists. Jazz lovers couldn’t be happier with another venue to add to the small pickings. Packed on weekend nights, the live music venue has an intimate and cosy setting with its small stage, piano and fireplaces. Whose playing when check out: www.theorbit.co.za Don’t forget the Joburg Theatre, following its timely renovation (formerly The Civic) which continues to stand the test of Braamfontein time. A local institution that rivals any international stage, the Joburg Theatre offers top class entertainment for all. From the spectacular Broadway musicals we have all come to know and love to the best of the local arts scene and some good comedy too, the Joburg Theatre remains a beacon of the arts. Fast becoming a night time ritual is a glass of wine at Stages, the theatre restaurant, as you unwind from the day, ahead of the creative adventure on which you’re about to embark. By Carly Ritz

Hello Johannesburg August 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za
“Several studies by research institutes reveal that up to two-thirds of interviewed motorists feel uncomfortable in tight parking situations. Options such as the extended Park Assist Pilot and bird’s-eye view function turn these potentially stressful situations into comfortable, precise and safe manoeuvring,” says Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. The further-developed Park Assist Pilot facilitates both parallel and bay parking by taking over and operating the steering wheel while the driver handles the gearbox and controls the car’s speed. Ultrasonic sensors detect the parking space The parking manoeuvre is based on information from twelve ultrasonic sensors around the car. When the driver activates the Park Assist Pilot in a parallel parking situation, the sensors start to scan the side of the car for empty parking slots. When a parking slot measuring a minimum of 1.2 times the car’s length is detected, the driver is notified by an audible signal and a message in the instrument cluster. In a bay parking situation, the slot needs to be the width of the car plus one metre.
The display then guides the driver step by step via texts and animations in the instrument cluster until the car is parked. A bird’s-eye view from above the car The all-new Volvo XC90 also features Surround View that gives the driver a 360° bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area with the car as the centre point. Surround View relies on four concealed fish-eye cameras – one integrated into the front, one integrated in each of the door mirrors and one fitted above the rear number plate. “The 360° Surround View is exceptionally useful in situations where the driver’s direct view is obstructed, such as leaving a tight driveway with obstacles on the sides or when reversing towards a trailer or caravan,” says Peter Mertens. “360° Surround View also provides great support during parking, for instance when you want to make sure that all parts of the car are within the lines of a parking spot.” Cross Traffic Alert The outstanding IntelliSafe solutions in the all-new Volvo XC90 also include Cross Traffic Alert, which covers the driver’s back when reversing out of a parking space. It warns of approaching traffic up to 30 metres on each side, alerting the driver with an audible signal and a warning on the centre screen.

PROPERTY
Heavy metal & horses You could be forgiven for asking what real estate and motor sport might have in common? Well, when a stalwart of South African motor sport history goes up for auction, you have your answer. Like a gleaming, asphalt phoenix many times arisen from the ashes and stretching over 4.2 kilometers, the Kyalami Race Track has just gone under the hammer (at the time of going to print), and this prime piece of South African history and real estate now faces an uncertain future... What is certain though is that in its heyday this track has welcomed racing royalty. Names like Brabham, Villeneuve, Lauda, Prost, Mansell, Scheckter, Senna and Stewart have all set racing slicks down here to grab checkered flag glory. The track is a tricky one testing the limits of even the best drivers with 11 mind-bending turns and long straights. The track itself has undergone many changes over the years but it still boasts a variety of events featuring all kinds of wheels from motor bikes to racing cars. Much like the track, the suburb of Kyalami and its surrounds has changed over the years, although it has remained true to its equestrian roots, you will now find a complex mix of commercial and residential properties along its streets. In earlier years the suburb of Kyalami was considered out in the sticks, ideal for farmers and horses. This gradually changed with the event of the Kyalami Race Track opening in 1961 and its contribution to the commercial development of the area over the decades.
AdRIENNE HERSCH CEO Adrienne Hersch Properties
Political instability in South Africa saw Kyalami lose out to international events for some time but it reopened with much hype and fanfare in the mid 1990’s to host 2 more South African Formula 1 Grand Prix’s. Unfortunately, these were to be the last Formula 1 races held at its track but it has managed to play host to a variety of other international events, and now its next chapter - being sold on auction... And to whom and for how much and what will happen to it, is anyone’s guess. So what of the surrounding area? I don’t foresee that property prices and values will be adversely affected by the sale of the track. It could, in fact, have a positive impact on the Rand value of property in Kyalami where property prices currently range from about R1 500 000 for an entry level home to about R5 000 000 for a 4 bedroom house on lots of acres of land. There are also a number of farms that are currently being sold, either as going concerns or for development. And of course if you happen to have a spare R200 000 000 lying around, you could be the proud, new owner of a South African Race Track!
KYALAMI Racing from back in the day
Kyalami’s ideal location in Midrand, midway between Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as it’s excellent proximity to the N1 make it an extremely popular suburb with those wanting space and fresh air on the weekends but not a long commute to work during the week. It retains a rustic charm with a very prominent equestrian following, from show-jumping to dressage, gardening enthusiasts will love the nursery’s dotted all over its corners and cyclists can be found pedaling its roads all through the week. Things to do in Kyalami... For horse lovers the Lippizaner Centre on a Sunday is an absolute must! This performance is a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind show and perfect for the entire family. You might also enjoy The Kyalami Park Club, which represents Horse Owners, Riders and Social Enthusiasts (H.O.R.S.E). It runs many events throughout the year, covering all equestrian disciplines. It lies on 23 hectares of land and on one of Kyalami’s most beautiful parks and offers the highest levels of Equestrian events.
KYALAMI Hosting the Unlimited Super Bikes
The Kyalami Country Club offers members and visitors an exhilarating and challenging round of golf and the use of its world-class facilities. The Midrand Urban Market is held on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 5pm on the Kyalami Main Road. Enjoy over 100 stalls, fun, food and music! It is a day the whole family will enjoy. Gallagher Estate around the corner from Kyalami plays host to a number of excellent conventions and expos throughout the year. A highlight though is the annual Chocolate Festival. Chocolate in all its colours, forms and flavours is on offer here what more can you say; it’s chocolate!
KYALAMI Formula 1 from the 70’s
In closing, the Kyalami lifestyle has a charm that has been carved into its residents’ hearts and much like the love of motor sport - it’s in the blood and will be one that continues to thrive, race track or not, for a long time to come.

The extensions will include a link from the existing Gautrain Park station to Westgate; a link from the existing Gautrain Rhodesfield station to Boksburg; a link from the existing Gautrain Sandton station to Randburg and Honeydew, and a link from Naledi, in Soweto, to Mamelodi, through either the proposed Gautrain Samrand station, or the existing Gautrain Midrand station. This extension will include stations at Blue Hills, Sunninghill, Fourways, Cosmo City and Ruimsig. Ultimately, the plan is to have four Gautrain lines, adding to the Pretoria– Johannesburg, and Sandton–OR Tambo International Airport links. The Gautrain airport service will also start 30 minutes earlier and end 35 minutes later. The current starting time is 05:20, with the last service at 20:30. The Sandton station parking terrain will also remain open until midnight, to accommodate passengers affected by delayed flights.
