So far 2015 has been… Busy and filled with lessons! With January and February being boiling hot in Joburg, it has been the ideal ice cream weather! The most exciting thing that has happened is the launch of Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream’s new packaging.

What makes Joburg shine for you? The diversity & contrast. From exploring the hipster streets of Braamfontein, the real Africanness of the town, to the sky-scrapers of Sandton, the smell of spices in Fordsburg & Mayfair to the Asian community in Cyrildene, there is never a dull moment!

Hello Joburgers! A

s Autumn approaches (albeit slowly), we find ourselves scrambling to enjoy the hot sultry weather we have been having before the chill in the air sets in. This month we have taken to explore the top five foodie markets Joburg has to offer. What a wonderful way to spend a sunny morning, outdoors sampling the best of Joburg’s gourmet offerings. Why not grab some organic parsley and mushrooms while you are there and then try our delicious recipe from Cara-Lisa on page 20. Alternatively, venture out to taste some delicious Tapas at Escondido or a lunch with a view at Katy’s Palace Bar on the first Sunday of the month.

And speaking of interesting views, our cover feature, The Beer Company is a must-visit. Situated at Rand Airport, it offers a unique setting with views of planes and the Joburg horizon beyond. Not only that, it serves delicious food and a wide variety of quality craft beer. We raise our glasses to that! And if raising your glass and being out and about at night is your thing, we have plenty to showcase this month, from musical offerings at the Orbit Jazz Club to interesting artists at the Mzansi Gallery. All in all, you are sure not to be bored this March with a copy of Hello Joburg in your one hand and a glass of chilled craft beer (or organic fruit juice) in the other. HOT spots

Katys Palace Bar The magical venue situated on the third floor of 6 Desmond Street, Kramerville, boasts beautiful views, eclectic furniture and an atmosphere yet to be matched.

V

isionaries, art collectors and entrepreneurs Mark and Christine Valentine and Elize van der Merwe blazed a trail to their own Emerald City alongside the evolving landscape of Kramerville. The force that originally rallied around Kramerville’s trendy ‘ware-house’ transformation four years ago, the team’s kingdom of enchanted venues continue to develop and capture the attention of those desperately searching for a little magic, a little madness and a whole lot of memories. Six Desmond Street birthed Katy’s Palace Bar. The space allowed her to unleash her eclectic energy and influence as the first neighbour to move in above existing residents – Amatuli. The original show room that started it all. Mark, Christine and Elize grabbed the floorboards of this triple storey venue with vigour to re-establish the dead space as Katy’s Palace Bar in 2012 on the third floor and Sir James’ Bar on the second. A few braai’s on the roof of the building on a Friday night coupled with an inherent knowing that the site was magical, spurred the innovators to build Katy’s Palace Bar on the roof of Amatuli Artefacts

in Kramerville which houses a plethora of African and Indian furnishings and decorative items that the owners of Amatuli have sourced, collected and traded over years of travel. Intricately laced doorways, fire-places, cupboards and light fittings dot the different levels and stairwells. Then in 2012, in need of a grand venue to celebrate his birthday, Mark launched the treasure cove into a functioning and viable event space with his own birthday bash which has seen the venue become the ultimate canvas for any imposing party from wild weddings to slick corporate functions and of course the all indulgent birthday party – whether you’re 21 or 51. The demand for the venue has been both a comfort and a challenge. To pre-empt and answer the nagging voice of fans who insist that Katy’s should be open more regularly, be warned that too much of a good thing might spoil the fun hence the much anticipated lunch at Katy’s on the first Sunday of every month. 6 Desmond Street Kramerville Sandton 073 857 0071 info@katyspalacebar.co.za www.katyspalacebar.co.za

The deconstructed look will be prominent: soft trench coats, more flowing fabric, kimono style coats, oversized clothing with strong Asian elements (particularly for fashion-forward men). It’s an easy, pain-free approach to footwear: sneakers, sandals and sliders, as well as the continued influence of sporty footwear. and a beer

Never mind the muffin man, do you know The Beer Co guys?

By Carly Ritz.

J

ason Roussous and Foti Papadakis are old friends. And friends who sell beer together surely do stay together. The pair are also the architects of The Harvard Café Group. With outlets at Bonaero Park shopping centre, The Rand Airport and one at Grand Central, the old adage about boys and their toys is spot on. Those who are part of the Harvard Café family really do get to be boys again watching big chunks of metal take to the sky. But what’s a little metal watching without a cold one? So they brewed a little beer plan. Amid the hype and excitement of the Craft Beer movement that has hit the country like a bullet train, entrepreneurs to the core, Jason and Foti saw an opportunity to convert their space into a pre-eminent Craft Beer venue in the East. Ideal as a Beer House setting with the open space and blue skies, Flyboys at Rand Airport as you know it, is changing and not just with a little paint here and there. In fact, by the time you hold this very piece in your hand, the venue will have evolved completely - so consider yourself one of the first to be invited officially to the re-opening the first week of March. It’s local, its lekker and it’s in the east people. Leveraging the support of communities around them and plugging into a family of existing home brewers in the area, we have no doubt that Jason and Foti will start brewing their own

beer one of these days. But hey, one step at a time. With every pub and bar calling themselves Craft masters these days, it’s hard to separate the hops from the barley. So this is why we think that The Beer Co is actually the real deal – and why you’ll catch us there when the boarding gates open. Off the bat, how unique can a series of locations get? Rather than seek the boring stillness of the usual urban area, Jason and Foti went gung-ho with a noisy spot instead. A world-class venue that sits right on the runway at the Rand Airport at the Old TAC (Transvaal Aviation Club) Building puts you at the centre of all the action. The vibe is palpable as rowdy crowds clink their beers over the sounds of launching engines meeting wild winds. And here’s a little history lesson while we’re at it, the site is adjacent to the SAA museum, home to some of the country’s oldest and retired jumbos like the famous Lebombo. So feel free to throw in a history lesson for the kids too. We know it sounds all macho and manly, but the ladies will feel right at home. “People who think beer is just a boy thing are sorely mistaken, some of our most regular customers are women who also want to wind down and enjoy the vibe” says Jason. And for those with a penchant for something sweeter,

Two Greeks, a runway the bar stocks a whole range of Jam Jar cocktails too. And for the appetite, there is a fantastic menu for everyone, from the hungry to the healthy. Boerie rolls and burgers to pizza and salads or steak and seafood - take your pick. In the spirit of family there is a world of fun with a jungle gym for the kiddies. Customers can expect great service and an even better vibe with excellent music. The menu truly caters for each customer individually with a flavour to suit all. So do the guys taste all the beers? Jason has a laugh at that one. “Not ALL as there are over 100 beers and I need to work as well sometimes.” As yum as it all sounds, running a beer company is a tough job Jason adds. “Like any service industry business it’s all about the service! Keeping on top of all matters related to running a successful business is key.” But for people who like people, it really is a great business to be in. So how’s about a pinch of advice for the ambitious brewers out there? Here it comes straight from the horse’s mouth: “Keep the prices reasonable and the quality consistent and top notch.” And there you have it! Now for some beers on ice! A piece of Africa in the heart of Rosebank Mall

W

e all love the urban lifestyle that the city has to offer, however there is something patriotic about entering the Rosebank African Craft Market. Converting a double story space into what is now an African hub. The market is inspiring because there are many cultures, traditions and personalities from all over Africa, all under one roof. Almost one hundred stalls to be exact. So what can you look forward to when visiting the craft market? Beautiful beadworks, stunning hand crafted sculptures, handmade original crafts, elegant handbags and so much more. Above all of this is a strong sense of entrepreneurship and empowerment. The energy is contagious and the collaboration of creativity amongst the vendors is admirable. Rosebank Mall has successfully integrated the rural with the urban to create a café society, a comfortable environment. The Rosebank precinct has done a great deal for visitors and for tourists alike! When I asked Thembi, one of the vendors, how long she had been working at the market for: “Can you believe it, twenty years” she happily exclaimed. Thembi, born in Mpumalanga, has learnt all her tricks of the trade from her mother who recently passed away and thus she has chosen to continue on the family legacy. She makes all the jewellery herself, by hand. A single necklace can take up to two hours, but she undeniably loves what she does. It is her passion and she is enthusiastic on the impact that she and the craft market have on society. Bravo to the Rosebank Mall for transforming an ordinary space into an inspiring nucleus, which encourages the functioning of our society and its people. Definition of Tapas Ever heard the concept: sharing is caring? The theory of tapas is exactly that. A wide variety of Spanish style appetizers and snacks, which are shared. Tapas creates a social environment, it’s a communal way of eating, encouraging conversation and thus enhancing the joy of food.

Hello s ’ Joburg able t o n new &

By Bianca Maletsky

scondido is Spanish for hidden, and we have to agree that this gem is a hidden treasure but we had to share it and quite aptly so, as sharing is the basis of their tapas menu which changes on a weekly basis. The chef, a simple guy who cooks food the way he loves to eat, arrived in South Africa ten years ago from Europe. Having been in Johannesburg for the past four years, discovered a love for tapas in Cape Town, saw the opportunity in Johannesburg two years ago. Took a leap of faith and introduced a new concept to the city not knowing what to expect. Having heard over the grapevine, about the delicious food, I had to sample some of it myself: I started off with Mushroom a la Grecque and Wild Mushroom Arancini. The Arancini is filled with truffle cream cheese - an absolute winner and at R14 per ball I had to have three. The Lentil Curry sounded intriguing and it was served in a floral poppadum so I had to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did. Then moving on to the fishy side of things: the Calamari heads, which come served crispy with a citrus aioli (nomnom) and the Thai Fish Cakes with a yummy Ponzu sauce are a gastronomic delight. I didn’t get to try the beer battered fish and chips as I was saving room for dessert, but it sounds like a strong winner! P.S Pair these all with a glass of your favourite white or red chosen from their selection of 6 000 bottles in their walk-in cellar! Alternatively try one of the eight craft beers they have on tap. What a refreshing delight! Now we all know having a balanced diet is having a dessert in each hand. So I went with the Churros with a decadent White Chocolate and Amarula sauce (I mean!) and the Vanilla Brulee. Lets just say the best things in life are sweet! Bottom-line: We love this place! chef of the month

They say never trust a skinny chef and Chef Richard Deacon is really skinny. But with almost a decade in the food industry, he really is one to watch. So we trust him with a hot skillet in the kitchen.

H

ead Chef at Vicky Cristina’s in Craighall Park since it opened last year July, the Spanish style Tapas restaurant hit the trendy list like a bee to honey. And Richard Deacon has a lot to do with sweetening the deal. Chef Richard describes the menu as a South African take on Spanish classics. The menu comprises a selection of tasting size dishes but if you are in the mood for mains, there is a wide selection of monster meals from Cocas’ (Spanish flatbreads) to the real deal Pichania rump steak or a seared salmon in an indulgent Saffron sauce. To keep things fresh and happening, the menu is changed seasonally. “It helps us to keep things relevant and take advantage of fresh produce.” Chef Richard ventured into the culinary world courtesy of his mother. “My mom

has always been a passionate chef, so she definitely got the ball rolling early on. For a good pinch of salt he tells us a little insider story. “My journey was not the conventional one. And it’s definitely one for the cook books. I was working part-time as a hotel barman and one morning got into a fist-fight with the executive chef.

We also source imported Spices from Spain. Only the best!” H The Colony Shopping Centre, 345 Jan Smuts Ave, Craighall Park • 011 325 1263 www.vickycristinas.com

The General Manager thought it would be a fitting punishment for both of us to work together, and so my training began! I loved the intensity of the kitchen, and found I had a knack for it. Training on the job has been a massive advantage, as the learning curve is a lot steeper when you’re thrown in the deep end. It’s got to be the rush of service. It’s like solving a rubik’s cube in the middle of a battlefield. Something about that gets me off.” Of course for a man who loves nothing more than spending time with his wife and son, the hours and time away from family can be tough. As far as location in Johannesburg goes it couldn’t get sweeter with Vicky’s so hotly spiced between Sandton and Parktown with easy access off Jan Smuts And what’s his favourite item on his own menu? “Tough call – but it would

ORGANIC PARSLEY-SCENTED MUSHROOMS by Cara-Lisa

I absolutely love spending my weekends visiting local organic markets to source the freshest and healthiest ingredients. One of my favourite spots is the Bryanston Organic Market, at which my most recent visit found me a basket stacked with freshly picked organic mushrooms and wild parsley. Mmmm what a treat! This side dish is a fantastic healthy accompaniment to your favourite protein and is just as good generously piled over brown rice.

F

or the past three months, Rob Heyns from League of Beers has introduced us to the idea of craft beer and has been educating us in how to taste the golden brew and sound like real beer sommeliers. Last month he discussed the aroma of craft beer. Today, he’ll look at the (plainly obvious) fact that people who drink craft beer are intellectually, emotionally, and culturally superior to their fellow man: I am constantly asked by total strangers why I am so awesome, and it depresses me to see their glazed expressions when I answer “Because I drink craft beer.” I think it’s high time I cleared up the issue, so here are five reasons that prove why craft beer drinkers are more awesome than everyone. Firstly, we’re trend-setters. We lead the way. We bravely go where few have travelled, and make it easier for others to follow. Happily, we are not snobbish trend-setters, and we’re overjoyed that the craft beer movement is gaining momentum. Secondly, those still stuck in the rut of life who are drinking mass-produced, soulless beer, are spending all their energy trying to keep up with the Joneses, and have no time to give any thought to the quality of the brew they consume. So they become grumpy because of their chemically induced hangover, snap at the wife, and plunge themselves deeper into the cold arms of a career. This could have been avoided if he had just bought craft beer and woke up cheerful and refreshed. As the above two points prove, craft beer saves marriages. It also creates marriages. “What’s that you’re drinking?” is a line nobody with a can in his hand has ever heard from that hot girl in the bar. You have become attractive to the opposite sex, and therefore you are sexier than everyone around you drinking cheap grog. Awesome!

4

Women love to go wine tasting. This is a fact borne out by my first point. To most beer drinking guys, only rom com’s are more pointless. With the explosion of craft beer, however, you can surprise the wife by taking her to wine farms that have a microbrewery on site. Now she tells her friends how cultured you’ve become, inducing envy in her friends. Now that you’ve allowed craft beer to save your marriage and make her friends jealous, you can let it improve your selfconfidence and social standing too. Everybody knows that having a few beers is a wonderful and naturally healthy confidence booster, and will stimulate your latent conversational skills. And that wonderful fruity aftertaste will also help make you more attractive to women as you regale them with your witticisms.

Q&A Hello Joburg

WITH CRYSTAL FROM

Sensational Suga

We spoke to the lady behind Sensational Suga to find out who she is, what she does and why she loves doing it.

What is Sensational Suga and what products do you supply? We do everything from beautifully decorated cakes, to indulgent sweet treats and delicious desserts. Think personalised iced cookies, home-made marshmallows, mini rainbow toffee apples, assorted meringues and decadent desserts like Nutella meringue torte. Who is the lady behind the brand? I have always had a love of chocolate and all things sweet and so I decided to start baking on the side. At first it was just a little personal indulgence – baking meringues to pass a Thursday night or decorating cupcakes just for fun. But I soon realised that, like everything else in life, baked goods taste even better when shared with those you love. With that, weekends turned into baking marathons. In July 2013 I quit my Marketing Job at a Financial Services company to follow my passion. I never looked back! What drove you into this business and what keeps you here? My love for anything and everything sweet. It’s an incredibly rewarding job seeing your end product and a client’s reaction is always priceless! Every day brings a new creative challenge and I’m constantly learning new techniques, trends and recipes.

THE FIVE BEST FREE

wi-fi spots in Joburg

W

hile the sign on the door of the coffee shop might say “free wifi” I’ve often found myself scrounging in my bag for my dongle when I’m greeted with a nasty data cap 20 minutes in to checking my email. I’ve done some investigating (and lots of tea drinking) to find the 4 best free wi-fi spots in Jozi… and there are no data caps.

1

WOLVES This funky hipster haven at 4 Corlett Drive has an “any usage goes” wi-fi policy. Just don’t order water and download the whole of Suits Season 2 and you’re good to go.

2

MOTHERLAND You’ll get 2 hours of free wi-fi per purchase. The coffee company has stores in Braamfontein, Rosebank and Dunkeld.

3

ROSEBANK MALL The whole mall is a free wi-fi zone – you simply switch to Mweb when entering the mall, enter your cell number, redeem a voucher and voila free wi-fi.

4

HAPPYME For a dose of happiness, delicious bubble tea and free wi-fi with no time limit you may want to set your laptop down at HappyMe.

5

SKOOBS Monte Casino’s book shop offers 90 minutes free wi-fi if you make a book purchase, order from their coffee shop or purchase a glass (or bottle) from their champagne bar. Tech Girl Sam Wright spends her time scouring the interwebs for a host of different women – moms, fashionistas, foodies, hipsters and geared up geeks – to share their tech stories with you. release tension, soothing those tight spots and hydrating the skin and very importantly, they are gentle on the skin as well. With the therapists being so professional and polite I highly recommend it! The new skincare range: the best news is that you can take a piece of Sorbet home with you. The new range consists of a variety of pampering products, from the Salon Skin 3-in-1 Cleansing Oil to the Rescue Masque to the Hydro Skin Lip Therapy; there is even an Age Affect Décolletage & Neck Cream, there is something for everyone. Inexpensive and nourishing, the three different ranges are created specifically for you and suited to your skin type. Sorbet Man launched last year because let’s be honest: real men groom. Men can

CROWING GLORY We sat down with Shelene Shaer - owner of Tanaz Salon and Justine Taitz senior hairstylist at Tanaz who share their knowledge and expertise with us. What is your number one rule of self expression? JUSTINE Authenticity - what I am, how I am is who I am. Although creative inspiration comes from many a source, it is vital to interpret it to suit ones own expression, personality and style. SHELENE I believe first and foremost that you need to understand your hair, and then wear it in a manner that you can manage to feel beautiful. I believe that when you have found what works for you, then why change? Another belief that I have, is that less is more. How do you stay fashionable with this outlook? Add a fringe, grow out a fringe, go a shade lighter or darker. Add a few lowlights and highlights. These are changes within a framework or structure that works. Summer is in full force. What can’t our hair do without this season? JUSTINE Brighten your attitude and your summer look with vibrant flashes of copper, caramel and gold. SHELENE Oil, Loreal Mythic or Kerastase Elixer. These are Argan oil based which penetrates into the hair. A must for every handbag. You wake up with a frizzy mane. What to do? JUSTINE A slick and easy quick fix is to pour a few drops of Morrocan Oil onto your palms, work through your midlengths and ends. Instant shine, instant smooth and good to go. SHELENE Frizzy hair needs a water spray, nourishing cream and oil again. If you have big frizzy hair you have to find time for that in the morning. If you wear your hair straight, you could put on a heat protectant such as the Loreal Nutri Thermique and then Reiron Hair. If you wear your hair curly, the water will tame it and then I would advise you drive the curl by twisting it in place. What can’t you leave the house without? JUSTINE I don’t feel fully dressed and ready to leave the house without wearing a smile. SHELENE THE FRONT OF YOUR Hair done - that is why we love a fringe. It hides wrinkles, and your fringe can be washed and dried and you can leave the rest of your hair and look like you have fabulous hair.

ur artist of the month, Steve Kwena Mokwena is a talented, spiritual and passionate man who won’t let anything stand in his way of creating: “I create what I can with what I have. I rarely work with conventional materials and I pick up my stuff to make art with everywhere I go. I have transformed enough disused doors, cabinets and all sorts of broken pieces of wood into artworks that I have sold, to know that my task is to create.” Mokwena’s spirituality is the foundation for all his art and his work is strongly influenced by Jazz and historical images of black life. “I used to be pulled by pictures of anguish and oppression but as I grow older, I am trying to find power in the soft side of being a person

in this world. Yes we suffer still, but we also play, sing, dance and make love. I look there for traces of what our ancestors were about and how they saw themselves. I try and take the feelings of what I see and give them some form of representation.” Mokwena uses his art to tap into his subconsious and the feeling side of his being: “Drawing and painting, allows me to suspend my intellectual side and follow what feels right and what reveals itself through the process of making marks. It is an immersion into the murky waters of ones subconscious mind – in the pit of ones spirit so to say. That is my playground.” Steve’s greatest wish is to create good work, connect with people and to make a living doing what gives him the most meaning. A Constellation of Talent

AT THE ORBIT WHAT IS THE ORBIT? he Orbit finds its roots in Troyeville, where in the early 2000s Aymeric Péguillan and three other partners established a small Jazz Social Club. 14 years later and the venue has changed but the essence remains the same. Péguillan and his two partners Dan Sermand and Kevin Naidoo use The Orbit as a platform for the creative expression of jazz musicians, both local and international. The club is first and foremost a place where people come to listen to the glorious sounds of jazz. Situated in the heart of Braamfontein, its central location ensures a steady flow of patrons from all around Jozi. This is a place where people across cultures, social platforms and other divides come together. Here is where you will find a business man, a non-profit worker, an international traveller and a third year university student in the same space savouring their common interest in good music. Clearly, the atmosphere is what brings people here, but what’s good to know is that they also have a great selection of wines and quality bistro food which is served in their downstairs bistro area. There is also the opportunity to enjoy your food while listening to the jazz in the upstairs area as long as table talk is kept to a minimum – we are dealing with serious jazz lovers here after all! Volvo S60 T5

T

urn on your TV, find your favourite show and no doubt you’ll see one of the characters in the show driving a Volvo. Perhaps it is because Volvos represent something unintimidating and wholesome, whose knows? But the Volvo brand carries a paradoxical image - generally it’s perceived as the global leader in safety, it’s the car chosen by the chino-wearing intellectual. Yet in reality, Volvos are dynamic, fast and sexy. Though these descriptions have only recently held true for the last ten years or so, they have and probably will always appeal to the thinking man and woman. They are brilliant cars, made by people for people. When creating a Volvo, egos have been put aside and brain matter electrified for their creation. The S60 T5 in R-Design garb is a thing of beauty. With a midlife facelift carried out not too long ago, the S60 now has a low slung look that’s undoubtedly purposeful. A sloping roofline and tightly cropped rear with boomerang shaped rear lenses gives the S60 athleticism fused with an executive nuance. The T5 is one of six turbo petrol engines and three diesel engines badged with D as

opposed to a T. All varieties are mated to either a slick shifting six speed automatic gearbox, or on higher end models like the T5, fitted with the sublime eight speed gearbox, which is also automatic. The T5 demarks a 2.0 engine, which with the help of a turbo pushes out a very energetic 180kW of power. This swerve Swede is able to hit the 100km/h mark in a dashing 6.3 seconds. If you have an urban driving style mixed with on-off highway trips, the T5 will sip about 9l/100km. On the road, the S60 is light, quick, firm and accurate. It’s skewed toward the sportier side of life and has a connection with the road that is tangible. The steering is weighted to feel nimble with just the right amount of tension to remain a driver’s car. Driven moderately and within the legal speed limits, the S60 can come across noisier than you would expect of a car of this calibre. The sounds are made up of road and engine

feedback. The road noise is due to the sexy low profile tyres fitting to gorgeous R-Design gunmetal colour rims. Their visual appeal and tenacious grip are positives for the trade-off. Overall it’s a comfortable place for five and their carry-on accessories. It’s a compelling alternative to the conventional German trio, especially at prices beginning at R360 000 for the T3 and up to R580 000 for the range topping T6 all-wheel drive R-Design.

HYUNDAI I20

I

t is a little known fact, but the new Hyundai i20 was designed by a master. Rewind back to the original Audi TT- this iconic vehicle was penned by world-class designer, Peter Schreyer. The masterful eye of Mr Schreyer, whose new design has catapulted the i20 from a bowl of white rice in the previous i20, to a saucer filled with salsa in its replacement. Once bland, now a fusion of angular flavour and Eurocentric influence, referred to by Hyundai as “Fluidic Sculpture 2.0“, with the clean and elegant lines giving it a sophisticated appearance. The new i20 is bigger, lighter and is 64% stiffer. This translates into a cabin that offers classleading front and rear legroom. On the road, the i20 feels incredibly well insulated and refined, to the point where it feels like a larger and more expensive vehicle. The i20 features two airbags, both for the front passengers, with front and rear seatbelt pre-tensioners. The i20 range consists of three models: 1.2 Motion five speed manual at R184 900, the 1.4 Fluid six speed manual at R204 900 and the flagship 1.4 Fluid, which is equipped with an automatic four speed gearbox and sells for R214 900.

SUZUKI CELERIO Miniskirt - probably the smallest article of clothing worth mentioning, yet creates a hefty amount of attention. With this article being all about compact hatches, which could be likened to a skirt, if you think laterally, then it’s fitting to make mention of a new mini variety, the Suzuki Celerio. This pintsize banger replaces the Alto. It’s a petite car with bigger car aspirations - much like a Doberman Pinscher. The newcomer proves that compact doesn’t need to be cramped and that space and style don’t have to cost a fortune either. Unlike a miniskirt, which forces your thighs together, legroom and a high roof won’t have you rubbing up against your fellow passenger. Boot space is pretty good too. You could shop up a storm at your local Dis-Chem and have the healthiest luggage compartment in town. The Celerio features a 1.0 three cylinder engine, which delivers zesty dynamics, combined with economical fuel consumption (approx. 4.7l/100km). It’s the perfect choice for zipping through city traffic or squeezing into tight parking spaces, but when the traffic lights go out, which is common place these days, its optional automated manual gearbox will come in handy. The Celerio is available in two models: the entry-level GA at R109 900 or the pimped out flagship GL at R138 900.

ike the words of James Brown’s famous song “Papa’s got a Brand New Bag”, Honda too has a bag of tricks in their all new Jazz. Now in its third generation, the new Jazz looks linear and aggressive. The soft edges have been replaced with modern angular shapes that give it a futuristic feel. The Jazz doesn’t compromise on cabin space just for good looks, instead it has a larger cabin, which offers class leading interior space. The Jazz has improved stability on the road with a good ride and handling characteristics. Safety is a priority for Honda with extensive active and passive safety features including six airbags across the range. The Jazz features a new, highly efficient 1.2 four cylinder engine and the tried and trusted 1.5 four cylinder unit already familiar from the previous Jazz. There are two transmission choices: a five speed manual gearbox or a Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT). Drive is to the front wheels in both instances. All models except the entry-level Trend, benefit from a 4yr/60 000km service plan included in the price, while services on all models are at 15 000km intervals. Prices begin at R179 900 for the 1.2 Trend Manual and top out at R264 900 for the 1.5 Dynamic CVT. The question remains: will the Jazz’s new edgy styling appeal to those who twerk, or remain a favourite of those who can recall doing the Monkey or the Mashed Potato?

10AM Grabbing a cuppa at Origin Coffee Commencing your morning with the Artisan Roasters of Africa is not a bad way to begin any day. Grab a cup of the Kenyan blend, which has hints of Cranberry, Hibiscus, and Red Apple. Medium, clean body and a crisp apple acidity or if you’re more of a tea connoisseur opt for the unique tea experience, an exotic pleasure in the tea space (ground floor level of the café) Pair this with an authentic Montreal-style breakfast bagel and you are organised. www.originroasting.co.za 12PM A walk in Green Point Park The Green Point Park is a 12.5 hectare space owned by the City of Cape Town. Being the centre piece between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, it’s an impressive picture. There are ideal spots for picnics and outdoor activities but the stunning walkways cannot be beaten. Humour your morning with the spectacular landscape, which is nothing short of mesmerising. 021 417 0120 • www.capetown.guv.za

 WORLD MALARIA DAY IT BUGS US, TOO The aim of World Malaria Day is to provide education and understanding of malaria, a global scourge, that is both preventable and curable.

T

his international campaign is held every year on 25 April and their motto is ‘Invest in the Future, Defeat Malaria’. According to UNICEF, Malaria is killing nearly a million people per year and a child every 30 seconds. This heavy disease burden is particularly damaging to pregnant women and can result in maternal anaemia and low birth weight. Currently the threat of malaria has increased due to thousands of displaced people in Mozambique and Malawi from the floods. It is time to wage war on malaria by using preventative methods. An effective way is sleeping with insect repellent treated mosquito nets which can reduce the malaria illness by 50 per cent in areas of high transmission. Painting internal and external walls of a dwelling with insect repellent will also prevent the mosquitoes that do get in from living long enough to bite. Vital Protection from HHL Technology is a long action insect repellent that is a ‘vital’

step in preventing malaria contamination. David Hyams President of SASTM, the South African Society of Travel Medicine is of the opinion that Vital Protection®, used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, can be recommended as an effective insect repellent to be used on fabrics, the efficacy of which has been

established against the malaria vector, the Anopheles mosquito. Contact HHL Technology for any product queries on 021 100 036 info@hhltechnogy.co.za www.hhltechnolgy.org www.vitalprotection.co.za

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za
