acarandas, for me, always symbolise the beginning to the end of another year. The purple flower-lined streets (especially vibrant after a thunderstorm) remind me that celebrations and holidays are around the corner. Our November issue is full of ideas and places to go before Joburg quietens down in December.

Another family outing is to the internationally acclaimed exhibition, Tutankamun – his Tomb and his Treasures at Silverstar Casino. The exhibition has faithfully reconstructed his tomb to scale. Audio guides for children are available. We recommend you visit two pup-ups before they close: the Ron Zacapa Aficionado Pop-Up Bar at the Sandton Eye and the very exciting Magnum Pleasure Store in Rosebank. The Aficionado Bar is the place to savour a unique cocktail, like a snap pea infused cosmopolitan; while the Magnum shop allows you to create and customise your own Magnum from a huge selection of toppings and sprinkles. Enjoy!

A DAY WELL SPENT WITH TALLULA ESTERHUIZEN 8am: Vovo Telo Norwood My fiancé makes his way to Vovo Telo in Norwood to get coffee and pastries - usually a selection of Pain au Chocolats, Custard Danishes and (my favourite) Berry Pin Wheels. www.vovotelo.co.za 10:30am My fiancé uses said pastries and coffee to goad the beast (me) out of bed. 11:30am: 32 Clothing on Rissik I might run off to 32 Clothing on Rissik street for a spot of shopping. This place takes bargain hunting to a new level - you can basically restock your entire wardrobe with labels like Gap, Cheap Monday and Lavande for under R1 000. www.32clothing.co.za 12:30pm: Super Sconto We potter down to Super Sconto - an Italian deli, cafe and supermarket. Here we stuff our faces with Spaghetti Bolognese and pretend that we are really in Italy - which is not hard to do considering everyone around you (including the car guard) is conversing in Italian. After we fill our bellies we head to the supermarket section to fill our basket with small buckets of salted capers, big cans of pomelo tomatoes, parmesan, pasta and some Italian toothpaste for good measure. 169 Louis Botha Ave / 011 728 2669 1:30pm: Love Books We take a drive though the leafy and (at this time of year) Jacaranda laden streets of Johannesburg to Melville where we browse Love Books. www.lovebooks.co.za 3pm: Puri Thai Parkhurst If I am lucky my fiancé deposits me at Puri Thai Massage in Parkhurst, a calm oasis of awesome where the deceptively small Thai therapists are like massage ninjas and will sort out any tension. www.purithai.com 5pm: Tortellino D’oro I stop off at Tortellino D’oro in Oaklands to buy two scoops of the best ice-cream in town. www.tortellino.co.za 7pm: A la Bouffe We meet up with friends at A la Bouffe in Linden for fantastic French fair and good wine. www.alabouffe.co.za Hello Joburg • November 2014 • www.gohello.co.za

FESTIVE AT

THE FOUNDRY

New soul & street menu is launched th month

W

e all love a new spot (granted) - but a hot spot that pumps religiously, come rain or shine every season is a sure win when it comes to definite end of year festivities and fun. The culinary corner of Parktown is already such a festive part of Jozi that when the Foundry pulled in, it was like it had always been there anyway. It’s understated look and feel with the handblown glass light fittings to the steel frame door and parquet bar makes you feel like you’re visiting a mate – a really cool one – ok probably an artist type friend but you get the point – it’s comfy and cosy and says put your feet up pal. Add to the location and décor, the Foundry’s Craft Beer and rustic food menu and you get a vibe that totally rocks for food, friends and flirting. There’s also the side-road bar in case you haven’t noticed that pumps with young hipsters and business folk as the work day comes to its summery end. There are no fewer than 50 different beers (ten of which are craft beers) to sink your gums into. Its makes up for the limited wine list which still has a few gems. To line the stomach you should definitely try the charcuterie boards – meat or cheese. Great for a group of friends or intimate date if that’s what your silly season calls for. Ron Zacapa Aficionado Pop-Up bar

I

t is official Hello Joburgers The Ron Zacapa Aficionado Bar has launched in Jozi. The bar is a pop-up and fifty bucks gets you in. It promises to take guests on an exclusive, sensory journey. And we sure need an adventure. We are ecstatic. Let me tell you why. What exactly is Ron Zacapa? From the forests of Guatemala to the streets of South Africa Ron Zacapa hosts an ultra-exclusive sensory experience to celebrate its arrival in SA. One of the “World’s Top 100 Most Valuable Luxury Brands”, Ron Zacapa is a deeeelicious 23 year old blend of rum. It is a combination of virgin Guatemalan sugar cane honey and a slow aging process in the highest aging facility in the world – 2 300m above sea level. Why you should try it? Firstly, it’s a new experience. Secondly, a major treat is the DJ on decks, which ensures a major party. Thirdly, they have introduced ‘Aperitivo Nights.’ Mingle with fancy people and cool cocktails whilst nibbling on delightful tapas all for R105per person.

So what’s on offer? Cocktails, cocktails and dare I say more cocktails? But not just ordinary cocktails. Think Mojitos served in an old-school sterling silver beer mug on a garden of ice cubes. How about a snap-pea infused Cosmo? Or a mad hatters’ tequila tea party? Don Julio deliciousness served in teacups with some blossoms for decoration, of course. Where is Aficionado? Only in one of Johannesburg’s most plush suburbs - sassy Sandton. The bar is located at the Sandton Eye (corner Rivonia and West Streets, Sandton), Looking for a venue for your birthday, function or end-of-year party? This is THE picture-perfect place for a corporate function. The space is creative yet sleek. A

sprinkling of magic dust - and a real helicopter on stage - is all that’s needed to reach Neverland in Janice Honeyman’s swashbuckling pantomime adventure, Peter Pan. Janice Honeyman’s Peter Pan is proudly brought to you by BankservAfrica and is produced for The Joburg Theatre by Bernard Jay. In true panto style, the villainous Captain Hook will have audiences booing and hissing, while his side-kicks, the non-conforming Mr Smee and “Dame” Clementina Coconut, balance out the villainy with laughter and fun. Tinker Bell, Mr and Mrs Darling, Wendy and the Darling boys, their nursery dog Nana, The Lost Boys, the pirate crew and their beautiful girls fill the stage in this fast-paced, lavishly designed, over-the-top panto - with plenty of surprises and thrills for adults and children alike. Peter Pan features award-winning stage and television star Craig Urbani (The Buddy Holly Story and Thoroughly Modern Millie in the West End and South Africa) as Captain Hook and the irrepressible Idols favourite Bongi Mthombeni as Mister Smee, in his recordbreaking fourth successive Joburg Theatre pantomime. “I did panto in Wimbledon and Bradford in the UK,” says Craig Urbani. “But never one in South Africa, so I’m looking forward to performing on stage again. Especially the Mandela stage, it has amazing memories for me, my theatrical home. Doing panto is going to make this a special Christmas season.” Michael Riff Themba plays the courageous and gutsy Peter Pan. In just over a year in professional theatre, Michael has appeared in Starlight Express, The Colored Museum, and most recently, Monty Python’s Spamalot.

As a panto, it’s typical, topical and tropical. We assure you barrels of laughs and cannon shots of comedy.

The passionate and peppery fairy, Tinker Bell, will be played by Thembsie Matu, best known to South Africans for her hilarious character Prudence in the DSTV adverts on-screen. Weslee Swain Lauder will play the sidesplitting zany role of the Dame, the nanny of The Darling Family, but with a family secret hidden deep into the plot! The Darling Children are played by Joanna Abatzoglou (The Rocky Horror Show, Aladdin, Starlight Express), Emil Haarhoff (Jack And The Beanstalk) and Clint Lesch (West Side Story, Starlight Express). Fly away with Peter on a magical

adventure to Neverland, full of old and new songs, indians and pirates, and more than a sprinkle of fairy dust: this year’s production of Peter Pan is sure to delight the whole family. So if you believe in fairies, “hook” your tickets now for this perfect panto full of family-friendly festive fun! “Peter Pan is going to be fun, full of adventure, youthful enthusiasm and life,” says Honeyman. “We are going to follow Peter Pan’s exploits and escapades, Tinker Bell’s magical mischief and Captain Hook’s bullying, malicious and monstrous mayhem. What came first? The chicken or the egg? Fernando Duarte and friend Robert Brozin bought Nandos (back then it was called Chickenland) in the late 80’s for R80. That friends is a true story.

N

andos is arguably one of South Africa’s most iconic brands locally and abroad. It is loved and adored for its sauces, chicken and wedges, but it is also thighs ahead when it comes to anything and everything creative. The brand has certainly worked its way into the hearts and souls of South Africans. In fact, the only thing better than Nandos food, are Nandos marketing campaigns. Fast to respond to current events and trends, you can expect a witty Nandos post following any big news day. A string of numerous advertising awards will testify to that. It was the brain child of Portugueseborn audio engineer Fernando Duarte and business savvy friend Robert Brozin who bought the then called Chickenland in 1987 in Rossettenville. They both agreed that the flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken they were served was the best they’d ever tasted, so much so, they bought the restaurant and made it their own - calling it Nando’s. Today, there are over 1 100 Nando’s restaurants in 30 countries around the world, making it one of South Africa’s most successful and tastiest exports. Nando’s success is rooted in the South African passion that infuses the business. From their can-do-anything attitude, friendly and enthusiastic employees to the delicious chicken and love for the unexpected, Nando’s lives and breathes the wonderful madness that is South Africa. It’s a success story from beginning to end and the truth is the brand probably doesn’t need all that much marketing and advertising these days to keep the foot coming through the door. Yet they continue to remain ever relevant and loyal to their consumers. Today Nando’s sees its customers as its best brand advocates. Nando’s CEO, Geoff Whyte, says that South Africans love their advertising “which has always been smart, witty, brave and unashamedly controversial (we’re also terribly humble, did we mention that?)” Nando’s is a brand that is not afraid to push the envelope either “Some of the ads we are proudest of are the ones that were banned. To

us, there’s nothing quite like making people think – and maybe causing a little trouble along the way.” As for taking the brand abroad Geoff is adamant that Nando’s fans across the globe know their hearts lie in Africa but they haven’t been afraid to venture abroad. “It’s obvious, we love South Africa, as we forever remind anyone who sits still long enough to listen. Nando’s was developed by South Africans for South Africans – and for lovers of South Africa. And we’ll always stay true to that. We’re proud that we haven’t altered our distinctive South African flair over the years, and of our ability to make subtle changes as we venture over the seas so that the brand is always relevant to other markets.” Nando’s gives off a feeling of familiarity – a South African welcoming-ness – that is the same no matter where you are in the world. Constantly adjusting the menu to suit the trends – like the diet friendly chicken steaks and corn to the trendy desserts and family value deals, Nando’s good service and consistency are the pillars of the brand’s achievement. There’s no way in hell anyone in the Nando’s family will offer up the recipe (unless they want to be skinned like chickens) but their trade-mark Peri Peri sauce is the magic in the whole Nando’s mix. As for brand highlights, where does Geoff start? “There have been many highlights over the years, too many to count. But the recent launch of Central Kitchen is one of their most exciting success stories as the narrative comes full circle. The Central Kitchen building was one of Nando’s first sauce bottling plants in the heart of Lorentzville, way back in the day, and going back to this site is a sign that we have come home to roost. We have kept many of the original building’s elements, including the wooden flooring, the factory chimneys and the overall layout. But, true to form, we have infused it with a little Nando’s twist and the final design certainly clucks to its own tune. “Our first sauces were hand-bottled in Johannesburg as early as 1990. It took us only eight years to sell a million of these fiery little

bottles and they are still being sold all over the world (how amazing, to be able to take the Nando’s flavour home with you). As early as 1991, we hit the Australian shores and, a mere three years later, opened doors across the hemisphere in Canada.” Nando’s have won a bunch of advertising awards over the years and have listed and delisted on the JSE. “When we celebrated our 20th birthday, we shut down all our stores in celebration. It’s about the people, after all. So yes, it’s been a journey.” And Nando’s is not shy when it comes to throwing their weight behind a cause to make South Africa a better place. Goodbye Malaria is testament to that commitment. Malaria can be eradicated in our lifetime and Robbie Brozin, the founder of Nando’s and of Goodbye Malaria, says that this presents “an incredible opportunity for us to revolutionise the ways in which we solve one of Africa’s biggest public health problems.” Goodbye Malaria is about doing important things creatively and with a bit of fun – supporting it is a natural Nando’s fit. While Benny feeds his fans, Purity keeps her biggest admirer’s palate in check. And hers is without doubt, Benny’s favourite kitchen the world over. He graduated from the then Natal Technikon, Berea Campus Durban (today the Durban University of Technology) with a diploma in catering management. With his mother’s solid work ethic running in his blood, Benny worked long and hard to carve his cooking style into the local food-scape. Fifteen years later, Chef Benny found himself in a different kind of kitchen – this time with lights, camera and a whole lot of action. Benny believes that becoming a judge on MasterChef South Africa is truly one of his greatest achievements and enjoys every moment of this journey. As for failures – Benny would rather see them as areas of development that still require work. Proudly South African and a supporter of local tastes and flavours, Benny loves a braai and will use any opportunity to promote the flare of local cuisine – which explains why South African Airways snapped him up as quickly as they could when it came to upgrading their new onboard menu. His favourite ingredient would have to be pork. So braised pork trotters with stewed brown beans and pap (made his mom’s way) would be his ultimate dish. Now in its third season, one has to ask if MasterChef South Africa really is still that riveting and exciting. Benny is adamant so. “We are still discovering amazing talent and people who are really passionate about food and cooking.” Benny believes that MasterChef is also a platform to inspire South Africans to truly

Benny says keep an eye out for Executive Chef Phil de Villiers at 54 on Bath. An award-winning and acclaimed chef himself, Chef Phil hails from Prue Lieth College of Food. If you haven’t tried his menu at 54 on Bath in Rosebank, best you do! Talking about food in Jozi, Benny has a couple of favourite spots too. From Maboneng to the variety of fare at the Neighbourgoods Market, some authentic Chinese in Cyrildene to trendy Melville and the warmth of Vilakazi Street – he has the city covered. So what’s next on the cards for Chef Benny? “I’m working on my recipe book and cooking show, so stay tuned.” H

ruth be told, Benny admits that cooking was not the original plan. “After two years of not being able to raise enough money to study electrical engineering, I decided to go for plan B which was doing something that I’m good at – that was cooking.” Born and raised in Alexandra in Johannesburg, Benny grew up around food and enjoyed cooking with his mom who ran an informal catering kitchen to support her family. Benny humbly attributes many of his successes to his mother and the strong values and belief in self with which he was raised. Her sharp business acumen and tenacity to succeed served as the catalyst for her son’s great culinary travels. he Royal India opened on 15 September, and under the watchful eye of Mr Singh (he doesn’t miss a detail), is becoming the go to restaurant for authentic fine dining northern cuisine. He wants to change people’s perceptions of Indian food – that it’s not only hot and spicy. He says that it’s more complex than that that the tastes are layered and the sensations linger with the diner long after finishing the meal. He is proud that the kitchen is in the capable hands of Indian chefs (one of whom he’s worked with since 2008), that the restaurant is under the experienced watch of Indian managers, that he personally trains his staff, and that there are no short cuts taken at The Royal India, for example whole spices are bought then ground and mixed as desired for each dish, and the rice is specially prepared separately for each particular dish. The menu is extensive but Mr Singh

ol’Cacchio Benmore will kick-start a sluggish week and will take care of any weekly woes. Who doesn’t love a juicy, cheesy, melt in your mouth pizza? You wouldn’t feel the same about a salad. Just admit it. Celebrating Col’Cacchio Benmore for the month of November, we tried out their monthly celebrity Chef Pizza Series. If you haven’t tasted this month’s Celebrity Chef Series pizza yet, here’s what you’re missing: mozzarella with beef short rib slow cooked in red wine, veg and herbs, chili, topped with crispy basil leaves. This delectable dish is perfectly served with Place in the Sun Wines Shiraz. For 2014 the Celebrity Chefs were tasked to create a dish that reflects their take on #FoodWithaStory. Jodi-Ann Pearton’s Basil McBeefy recalls fond memories of her father preparing slow-braised short ribs for the family on the weekends. “It was the most amazing comfort meal and the spark that ignited my passion for food.” And the best news is that the pizzas change on a monthly basis so Rudi Liebenberg’s November Pizza will be a brand spanking new pizza celebration. And what’s a celebration without the ones we love? Kidlets will love the outdoor jungle gyms and parents will love the manna from heaven as the kids are also given dough to play with, to cut and cook. P.S R5 from every Celebrity Chef pizza sold will be donated to a worthy cause and this year the charity is the Children’s Hospital Trust. The funds raised will be put towards a special project called St. Josephs, which is a pediatric rehabilitation centre for chronically ill children. H

Hello, Midori heaven

By Bianca Maletsky

T

here was something momentous brewing in the air on the morning of Wednesday, 15 October. Midori Eco Salon hosted a pamper day for seven lucky ladies. Midori sourced the city for fabulous Joburgers and searched the web for Joburg’s finest bloggers. The ladies ditched the stress and instead focused on the spoils for the day. Indulged with champagne and orange juice and overindulged with fresh croissants, muffins and an assortments of bruschetta, the day oozed femininity and harmony. It was a tough task but someone had to do it! Each guest was treated to two specialised Midori treatments including: massages, Vita Liberata Spray tans, mani’s and pedi’s, facials and the V Bar (vaginal steaming). Just another excuse to be pampered and preened. Combining a unique regal experience the day was one of relaxation and leisure and Midori wanted all the women to feel special and to be beautified whilst doing so. The salon itself transports you into a fairytale realm, it is eco friendly and holistic and exudes a constant positive energy. Anisha, the owner, always welcoming and warm was delighted to host a day for the women, which she cherishes as apart of our city. Hey, who says it has to be women’s month for us to be spoiled? We want to say a big thank you to all seven ladies for joining: Leanne Van Breda, Irina Doman, Shashi Naidoo, Zakeeya Patel, Zaakira Moola, Fawn Rogers, and Stevie French. FOR THE LOVE OF THE JOB Taking attention to details to a new level, Turkish property developer, Ali Katircioglu, spent a few years encamped in a caravan on the site of the building, watching it take shape. ‘Uncle Ali’, it is said, was inspired to embark on the project by the teachings of a Turkish preacher, who also suggested the mosque be developed in ‘Madiba’s home’.

and imposing minarets that can be seen from the highway. And when you do drive past, you most certainly won’t miss it considering the dome rises 32 metres and the four minarets each 55 metres. Fast becoming one of Joburg’s most flockedto tourist attractions, the Mosque, a smaller replica of World Hertiage Site, the Selimiye Camii Mosque in Edirne in Turkey, was funded by retired Turkish property developer, Ali Katircioglu, who forever changed the face of 10ha on Old Pretoria Road. The Masjid is rumoured to have cost several hundred million rands. Have a meal at the Turkish managed restaurant located inside the Nizamiye mosque complex. Some will tell you that Ottoman Palace serves the best Turkish cuisine out of Turkey. There is also a small Turkish grocery store if you want to take any ingredients home to try your own hand at these dishes. H 011 024 5857 Old Pretoria Road,

ome to the annual bridal, travel, sexpo, to petexpo, you name it, Midrand is the go to part of town for all the big conventions – most of us can drive to Gallagher Estate on auto-pilot (I said most of us). Gautrain, taxis and terrible traffic, Midrand also heaves with office parks and commercial development. So the Nizamiye Turkish Masjid is a fresh change to the corporate skyline. Officially opened by President Jacob Zuma on October 4th 2012, the Nizamiye Turkish Masjid is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. President Zuma lauded the mosque as a facility that would truly help foster understanding and tolerance among religions. The hordes of visitors from across South Africa and the globe is testament to that statement. The creation of retired Turkish property developer Ali Katircioglu – fondly known as “Uncle Ali” set out to leave a legacy – and is well on his way, An Ottoman-style mosque, even if you don’t know where it is, you will have heard people talking about the eye-catching dome

• For those who simply look and do not explore, it is worth noting that over and above being a sacred place of worship, the site includes a school, boarding facilities, shops and a restaurant. • The mosque can accommodate 6 000 worshippers and prayers are held there five times a day with Fridays being the busiest day of the week. You need not be a follower of Islam to visit the mosque. • There is no dress-code but visit and treat the Mosque with as much respect as you would any sacred/religious landmark. • The building has two storeys to enable men and women to pray separately women on the balcony and men on the carpeted floor. • At the centre of the outdoor plaza is a small bathing area or whudu where devotees can wash before ritual prayers. • Painted in gold, Arabic prayer calligraphy and ornate flowers decorate the ceiling of the 31m high dome. • Turkish artists and artisans were brought to South Africa to work on the tiling. It took seven painters and 16 months to complete the murals. Other finishing materials like doors, tiles and windows were imported from Turkey. • The entire building took 30 months to create.

TOPS AT SPAR BIERFEST SETS NEW RECORDS IN JOBURG

T

OPS at SPAR Bierfest, South Africa’s largest annual national festival of Bavarian bier and bier culture ended its double weekend run at Montecasino on Sunday. The event attracted about 16 000 thirsty people through its brauhaus doors. “Bierfest truly offers has something for everyone over the age of 18,” says the event’s marketing manager Kate Ferguson. “It isn’t only about the three speciality brews we brew just for this event once a year, it’s about the oompah bands, the Frauleins, the delicious cuisine and the special vibe that is created by all of these elements coming together under one roof.” The event also dedicates its Sunday sessions to raising funds and awareness around the great work being done by The Sunflower Fund in helping Leukemia sufferers to obtain the help and the support they need.

Spud 3: Release 28 November The much-awaited Spud 3 Learning To Fly is due to hit South African cinemas on 28 November 2014 and promises to give viewers front row seats into the sublime and sometimes ridiculous world of being a teenager. The “Crazy 8” are back and this time there’s no end to the madness John ‘Spud’ Milton and the gang conjure. Following on the huge, global success of Spud and Spud 2 – The Madness Continues, Spud 3 trails the never dull life of John ‘Spud’ Milton, as he tries (dismally) to soar on the wings of love, attempts to master Shakespeare, and wrestles constantly with his mates ‘the Crazy 8’, his embarrassing parents, God and the power of negative thinking, not necessarily in that order. Produced by Ross Garland of Rogue Star Films, in association with Times Media Films and The National Film And Video Foundation, Spud 3 is a proudly South African film to the core. Not only was it shot in the heart of Cape Town but it also boasts the biggest collection of local and international stars. Based on the best-selling novel by Durban-born novelist, actor, playwright and producer John van de Ruit and directed by John Barker, the movie sees most of the original cast return, headed up by film and television legend John Cleese.

Automatic choice for iconic Suzuki Jimny

S

uzuki Auto South Africa has updated the iconic Jimny off-roader with a raft of changes and upgrades to both the exterior and interior, while an equipment upgrade has also been introduced. An automatic transmission is being offered as an alternative to the manual gearbox for the first time. Arguably the most obvious change is the fitment of new 15-inch alloy wheels, boasting a dark silver finish. The Jimny’s colour palette has also been revised, and now includes two new colours: Bison Brown, and Khaki Pearl Metallic. The cabin has also been spruced up, with an all-new instrument cluster the primary feature. The cluster features main dials for speed and rev count, with a third, intersecting instrument hosting a digital display. The display includes fuel tank level and

engine temperature readouts, as well as a digital clock, ambient temperature display, gear and transfer case indicator, a fuel economy readout, and a trip meter. The introduction of a four-speed automatic transmission option for the Jimny will please owners seeking the convenience of clutchless operation, especially in urban traffic conditions, while also making access to the Jimny’s legendary off-road capability even easier. As with the manual gearbox version, the automatic transmission is still partnered by a transfer case offering low-range operation for almost unstoppable traversability over the roughest and most challenging terrain. Both the manual and automatic transmissionequipped versions of the Jimny are covered by a three-year/100 000 km warranty, as well as a four-year/60 000 km service plan.
