T
his is the brain child of Michelle; a creator that calls herself an African traveller and who has brought the influence of her heritage and travels to her own little haven of delectable foods. Afroboer Baker’s Café is a place that combines Afrikaans traditions with the love of the African continent through added touches to recipes and elements of décor. A place where you can quickly meet a friend for a cup of coffee and slice of cake, discuss business matters over a breakfast of champions, or meet up with your group of girlfriends with your kids in tow. Michelle’s main aim with her establishment is to create a space where people can feel as if they’re sitting at their own kitchen tables whilst food is slowly and lovingly being prepared by hand. All meals are made from scratch, and all cakes and sweet treats are baked freshly each day, so you can expect to wait to a bit longer - but it’s definitely worth it! Sometimes they even sell out of their options, but that’s what they aim for each day. For your breakfast options, we highly recommend either the classic eggs benedict dish or perhaps changing it up a bit by ordering the cha-cha pan which includes

chourizo, mushrooms, poached eggs, truffle oil, parmesan and lemon cream. YUM! Coffee lovers won’t know what to choose, thanks to the variations that Afroboer offers we think you simply must try the Merkoffie. An espresso sweetened with condensed milk, filled with steamed milk and capped with foam. With delicious platters known as padkos planks, you can get a group together to pick and share while the kids run around. Perhaps you’re there for the sweet stuff? With freshly baked cakes, cookies, brownies and all sweet treats your heart could desire, you’re bound to find something to nibble on.

hen you think of the word malt, does your mind automatically go to beers and whiskies? Perhaps your sweet tooth gets the better of you, and you think of those double thick milkshakes like we see in the American-style diners? Needless to say, both are correct when it comes to what you can expect from Malt Bar and Grill in Pretoria!
With an interior that’s made up of wooden accents and touches of copper, with neon yellow signage, and yet, it all seems to come together with the theme of being an establishment that offers great food and drinks. It’s a popular place for after work drinks and always has a great atmosphere when a sports game is on. However, it also serves those early risers by opening at 7am and offering customers a free coffee with their breakfasts. Now, that’s a nice way to wake up! With an offering of over 50
different bottled beers, 21 draught beers on tap as well as a whiskey selection that stands at 65 malts & blends, you might wonder where to start. If beers or whiskies aren’t your thing, a jam jar is a guaranteed good time. Malt Bar and Grill also offers authentic malt mojitos with flavours such as Ale & Strawberry, R &R Mojito and even a Rooibos flavoured one. All these drinks might grow your appetite and you can be sure that Malt will be there to offer you homemade goodies like a Greek
burger, the Sassy Sauce burger and wood-fire pizzas to help curb those hunger pains. The nachos are also a total winner, as well as their classic 250g rib-eye steak. If you’re there with a group of friends, we recommend getting a few of their bar-style baskets to share. These are usually our favourites when we pop in for drinks. To end off your meal, indulge in the American sense of the word ‘malt’ with a delectable milkshake with flavours such as Nutella with melted marshmallows or caramel popcorn.

If you’re looking for something with a bit more intensity, the Babylon blend, which is a dark blend, offers you a sweet creamy flavour of dark cocoa along with the aroma of hazelnut and fresh cream. If that’s a bit too intense for you, the Machu Picchu blend which is a lighter blend, offers you a taste experience of natural notes of melon and orange with a bright and fresh aroma.
If you’re looking for the flavour of coffee without the caffeine intake, Troy is a decaf coffee blend that offers a rich cocoa and aged pear aroma with a chocolate flavour. Those looking for something completely different can indulge in Chan Chan, which is a spiced red rooibos team that has a sweet Fynbos aroma and is perfect for a rooibos latte. hours in Pretoria
Hello April. Already!
The weeks are certainly galloping and the temperature is starting to dip but there are always some evergreen things on the go in P-town and a couple of must “do’s” before winter hits.
Time Square The second largest casino in South Africa, things are happening at Sun International’s Time Square in Pretoria come rain or sunshine. What: Need some time out? There’s a new player in the gaming, hospitality and leisure space. It’s just over a year since the new complex made its debut, and things really are busy in the capital’s new entertainment and social hub. At the heart of the Menlyn Maine precinct, Central Square is where you'll find fine food, excellent shopping and wellness activities. If you're looking for new and exciting
places to go in Pretoria, you can't go wrong with a visit to Central Square. Most great cities in the world have centrally located piazzas where people can mingle, meet, trade from markets and enjoy exhibitions, festivals and other entertainment. Central Square is such a place: a walkable and bustling urban environment, the vibrant city centre for the precinct, and the hub of Pretoria entertainment.

The State of the Theatre
The stage is hot and heaving with fresh talent whether it’s dance, drama or comedy at The South African State Theatre all year round. A bastion of traditional and local entertainment, a trip to the theatre complex remains an occasion like the days of old when gran brought out the pearls and her vintage fan. The dress code may have been toned down even so slightly, but not the excitement or quality of entertainment. So what’s on the bill this month? Show: Sophiatown When: 10 April – 13 May Why see it: An unforgettable show, this version’s been revived with a new, young cast under the experienced eye of director Aubrey Sekhabi. Referred to as the “Chicago of South Africa”, audiences can expect timeless music, buzzing shebeen scenes and the story of gangsters, media and politicians in Sophiatown the musical. It’s an imaginative reconstruction of a dynamic set of journalists who set up house together during the country’s most tumultuous political period. The play highlights perspectives of people who were involved in everyday acts of resistance and organised protests against the apartheid regime.
What: Now in its 5th year, this event has certainly undergone an evolution over the years with improved logistics, entertainment and seating plans. Now one of the capital’s most prestigious events, get out and spend a special afternoon and evening together with friends and family at this year’s installment. With delicious food, live music and entertainment, what more do you need? Venue: It’s a big mystery for the moment so stay tuned for further announcements https://grandwhitedinner.nutickets. co.za Dress code: All white and a splash of excitement Hello Pretoria • April 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

reedom Park is a heritage precinct located on 52 hectares in Salvokop, Pretoria. Containing beautiful symbolic monuments and landscaped gardens, this is a place to come and remember those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for a free and democratic South Africa. The Wall of Names is the most striking monument at 697 metre long, there is space for 136 000 names on the wall and since 2007 the names of 75 000 South Africans who lost their lives in the fight for freedom have been inscribed on it.
Another highlight is the Garden of Remembrance, a serene space for reflection, filled with a collection of statues and sculptures. The Hapo Museum, also located in the park, tells the story of Africa and South Africa over seven eras of history. The name of the museum comes from the Khoi word for dream, and it is easy to feel quite ethereal in this dreamlike space, filled with artefacts and artworks celebrating the history of our continent. Tours of the park can be organised directly at Freedom Park and
guides lead visitors on a journey of remembrance, reconciliation and self-discovery. Maps are also available at the entrance for visitors to take themselves on a self-guided tour. The park is open 7 days a week, every day of the year except for Christmas and New Year. And, as we have mentioned, there is free entry on Freedom Day; the perfect way to spend the day dedicated to those who have shaped the country of today.

HOW TO Get the best shot on safari!
Words Supplied and revised by Victoria Taylor Images Stock images
Thanks to huge leaps in digital technology, the popularity of smartphones and the filters that come with them, taking a good picture has never been easier. However, snapping a selfie and capturing a male lion in mid-roar are not the same thing – but there’s no reason it couldn’t be that easy...
W
e’ve all been known to snap a few pics while on safari, so it’s no surprise that many companies now guests (professional photographers or not) the chance to view wildlife in their natural habitats and capture lifelong memories. Photographic safaris are different from ‘normal’ safaris simply because they cater to tourists who want that ‘perfect shot!’ Seats on vehicles (land or water-based) are equipped with camera mountings and you may even get an experienced safari guide who’ll know how to position you in terms of the sun and your subjects, so that you can snap that perfect shot.
KEEN TO TRY A PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI?
The Zambezi Queen Collection offers unique river safaris on the elegant Zambezi Queen and three Chobe Princesses, as well as at Ichingo Chobe River Lodge. 5 www.zqcollection.com
We know what you’re thinking… what about us normal folks who just want to snap fantastic pics while we’re on vay-cay? Pull out your SLR cameras or your smartphone, because experienced wildlife photographer Bruce Van Niekerk reveals his top tips for wildlife photography amateurs… •B e on the game drive at first light. This will ensure you’re able to maximise the crisp sunlight. • Listen for alarm calls, especially from birds, primates and antelope. This will help you (or your guide) find predators quicker. Animals know their surroundings best and are your best bet for predicting sightings. • Avoid sudden movements by investing in a bean bag or monopod to rest your lens on. Monopods offer stability and are quicker and more practical than normal tripods. • Know your camera settings. You don’t want to be fiddling around with settings and lose
an amazing shot. Bruce often shoots on 800 ISO, with a focal point of F8 and then he under exposes by a third. • Try to determine what your subject will do next, so you’re prepared. Have patience and take many pictures… it makes the section process easier. • Avoid jumping from site to site. Great pictures come from photographers that spend hours at a water hole. • Don’t change lenses while on a game drive! Dust can do serious damage to them. • Always have enough battery power and memory space on your cards. Charge everything the night before. • Lastly, have fun!

How to… care for your mattress!
It’s been shown that we spend approximately a 1/3 of our lives sleeping, so it’s fair to your mattress is a valuable part of your life. Best you take care of it…
E
ach mattress is unique and can last for as long as it’s cared for. If you treat your mattress properly it could easily last up to 7 to 10 years, however this is merely dependent on its maintenance and use. Read the instructions. Most manufacturers provide specific information on how to care for your mattress, so always follow the guidelines. Protect your mattress. Mattress protectors are ideal for keeping your mattress free from dust mites, bacteria, bed bugs and to create waterproof barriers. These covers are great especially when potty-training kids, and for people who tend to sweat in their sleep.
Know where to sit. Avoid repeatedly sitting in the same spot for prolonged periods of time, as doing so may eventually cause sagging or a weakened edge on your mattress could cause it to lose its structure prematurely. Rotation: Most new mattress models offer a no-flip design, but it’s still a good idea to give your mattress a clockwise turn every 3 months to ensure even wear. Rotating it should be

Cleaning: Launder your sheets and mattress protection weekly in hot water to remove irritants like pollen and dust mites. Stains or spills should always be treated with caution - use slightly soapy water and a soft wash cloth to gently blot, never rub the affected area.
Avoid harsh chemicals, as they may damage the foams and fibres. Words Chantalle Bell Images Supplied

ntroducing SEVVEN, the solo project of multiinstrumentalist, Rici Martins. Modern, electronic, and filled with beautiful layers of vocals and acoustic instruments, SEVVEN'S sound is enchanting. Lucky for all of us, he’s releasing an EP this month!
Any advice for local, budding musical artists? Find what makes you, you. And stick with it. Too many artists are trying to follow trends, or start in a certain direction, and quickly change direction when it doesn't seem to be working. Consistency is the most important element.
What inspires your sound? It’s not so much about the sound as what it is feeling. I like making music until it feels good to me, and then the sound almost seems like it comes automatically.
If you could perform alongside anyone, living or dead who would it be and why? My dad. Growing up, he was in bands and they used to rehearse at our house. It’s some of my earliest memories of music. When I wanted to start pursuing music, my parents where always supportive. So, for me being able to play a massive show and call my dad up for some songs would be amazing.
Give us some more juicy deets about your EP… I’m super excited about this! I’ve released a bunch of singles over the last year and a half, and the EP will have all of those as well as a bunch of new tracks. In a way, it’s like a catalogue of what I’ve done over the last while, with some unreleased songs to go with it.
36
What song would you play and why? My dad is an 80s guy, so it would have to be something

like Careless Whisper or something from Def Leppard. Do you have any weird musician superstitions that you could share with us? Never rehearse on the day of the show. It’s a terrible idea. Haha! Where would we find you hanging out on the weekends? Shows, studio, or my couch binge watching Netflix with a good whiskey.

What’s your favourite thing about performing? There’s something about being in the moment, where nothing else matters other than being able to create an experience to an audience that’s really magical. It’s a very unique connection to other people.
Nothing can stop us on our tracks to connect you to amazing attractions, tourist destinations and places of interest along Gautrain’s trains and bus routes. Whether you’re travelling to Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg or heading for a flight at the OR Tambo International Airport, we will take you there!
Let’s take you there
