Welcome New Members! Tom and Ellen Moore – Resident Single Golf (Mr.) Social (Mrs.) Craig and Andrea Ridenour – Social (Mr.) Non-Resident Single Racquet (Mrs.) Geoffrey and Tess Weil - Non- Resident Family Golf Daniel and Corinna Cathcart – Resident Family Racquet

Member Profile – Rick Gorski Rick and his wife, Linda, are very new residents of Port Royal having moved here in early April 2022 from Houston, Texas. They have two daughters, the oldest in Buffalo, NY with 3 grown sons and the youngest in Okatie, SC (who helped convince them to move to Hilton Head). Born in Oklahoma, Rick's father was a career soldier, so for the first half of his life, he moved around a lot. Rick graduated from West Point in 1966 and later earned a graduate degree in civil engineering from Stanford University. He started his career with 25 years in the Army and more moves. In his last Assignment, he was head of the Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans. In that capacity, he learned a lot about the Mississippi River, saving wetlands and marshes in Louisiana, and how the Mississippi River influences the Gulf of Mexico, and drains 60% of the United States. He retired from the Army in 1991 and became a project manager with a global engineering company working in the oil and gas industry with more moves on the horizon. While working in the oil business he traveled to South America, Russia, Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Rick and Linda met in Washington D.C. when he was a cadet and she was working for a Texas congressman on Capitol Hill. HHI is Rick's 29th home, and for Linda, who is also an Army brat, this is home 47th. He swears that they're now in their last home! Rick enjoys playing golf and, when not doing that, working on projects around the house. He enjoys meeting people at the club and finding his way around the golf courses. He is happy the club encourages social activities where people get together and with many opportunities for new members to get to know existing members. Rick and Linda have found Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club to be a very welcoming experience. He hopes to find his favorite desert, frozen peach yogurt, on the menu at Robber’s Row Grille soon.

President’s Message By Jon Wormley

Don’t wait to submit your entry for the Heritage Golf Invitational 2022 “Islands of the South”. While the deadline for submitting your entry is August 15th, the reduced pricing ends on July 31st. I want to thank Bill Hazel for an outstanding job in leading this year’s efforts with assistance from the Heritage staff. While the final decision on the Tee Gifts is still outstanding, having viewed the alternatives, it is fair to say whatever is chosen will be substantial.

My congratulations to John Manfre, a new member this year, who turned in an amazing round of 73 on Saturday, June 18 including Fifteen pars, 2 bogeys and 1 birdie. In the same foursome Greg Lyons shot a net 67, I believe one of his best rounds. Teamed with Larry Ernst and Steve Dill, the other 16 Early Birds had no chance at winning. Heritage has announced the hiring of our new Chef, Scott Woodcock. Join me in welcoming Scott to our Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club. Heritage has also introduced an Employee of the Month recognition program. Parris Brown, our Court & Grounds Maintenance person, was recognized for his contributions for April and Eric Fernandez, our Chief mechanic, was recognized for May. Join me in congratulating them both. Heritage has promoted Michael Collier from within. Michael, who joined Heritage one year ago, has been working in the Sports Shop and helping our outside bag staff. Michael is now working in Leisure Sales which fits his educational background. Congratulations Michael. A win-win for all of us. I took a few weeks off as we travelled to Connecticut to visit our son, his wife and our 2 grandchildren. Even more amazing, I did not receive any, like zero, complaints during this time away. I returned to green grass on the fairways. After aeration, there is lots of new turf. The progress is great to see. Someone commented about the grass in the rough. How many of us remember the good ole days when, if you hit your ball in the rough, it was almost impossible to find the ball? Jay has assured me we will not see such deep grass again and many birdies are being reported. Improved course conditions must be helping such excellent play. Tennis and pickleball continue to thrive. All courts are very busy in the early hours with afternoons slow – must be the heat factor. The Board, in June, put together a list of potential members for the Nominating Committee. Hopefully by the time you are reading this newsletter, I will have completed my task of forming the Committee. Once again, if you have any interest in being considered for the 2023 Board of Governors, let me know and I will forward your interest to the Chairperson for consideration. Be Safe.

Golf Report By Bill Hazel

Heritage Invitational: Member-Guest 2022 This is one of several reminders to be sent regarding the annual memberguest tournament, which will be held from September 22 through September 24th. The tournament format will be the same as last year’s event and the list of social events will be comparable as well. Unfortunately, for various reasons, we were not able to garner enough interest to be able to field a women’s division for this event this year – hopefully, we will be able to do so in 2023. Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club differentiates itself from many other semiprivate clubs by holding events such as The Heritage Invitational and as such, my hope is that the Member-Guest will be well attended.

An invitation (email) was recently sent out with some details, but if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Parker Mulford in the Sports Shop or myself.

Men’s Golf

By Nigel Jones The early, hot summer weather has not discouraged members from participating in our monthly events. We had 35 members playing in the June Super Men’s Day, and at the end of May we had 9 “Super Seniors” competing in their Championship. Congratulations to Jack Schrader who took the title of “Super Senior Champion” for the second time, following a close fought battle with Larry Ernst. Due to the heat, members were happy to play a revised Super Men’s Day format of 2-Ball Shamble. Winning this month’s event were the team of Bud Henry, Rick Keebaugh, Rick Gorski and Ernie Marsico, with an incredible 20 under par total - Congratulations to all.

A Shout Out and Thanks go to the Course Conditions Committee who carried out a ride around of Robbers in early June, and they will complete Barony shortly. Their effort and report are appreciated and is a valuable input to Jay and Charlie in ensuring the courses are kept in good order and continuously improved. Upcoming Events - Look out for the Invitations for these events and sign up online or in the Sports Shop. Nightmare Nine - REVISED DATE - Friday July 29 Super Men’s Day - Wednesday July 6 Super Men’s Day Wednesday August 10

9 Holers

By Judi Chmielowiec

Life surprises me daily, but for some reason, I looked back at my July 2021 newsletter article (don’t ask me why!), but I could not believe it has been a year since this statement in my July Newsletter: “Tammie Blank has graciously agreed to take over Director of the Month duties for June, while Nefeli makes a speedy recovery. The Nine Hole Ladies dressed in pink to show our support for Nefeli!” Congratulations, Nefeli, for being one year in remission and all that you do for us as Secretary of the Nine Holer’s and so many other selfless duties you give of yourself.

Our golf games continue to improve and some of you ladies’ act like you are playing for fun, BUT, I see a lot of competition in your game. So, the next five game dates showed that competition with the following winners: May 19 – Blind Hole Winners: First Place: Nefeli Keebaugh (24) Second Place Tie: Kathy McGown and Judi Chmielowiec (28) May 26 – Shamble Winners Team: Kathy McGown, Nene Shope, Mary Ann Shallcross and Julie DeLaurence June 2 – Individual Stroke Play Winners: Nancy Simpson, Judi Chmielowiec, Nefeli Keebaugh and Joan Hazel. June 9 – Low Putt Winner: Oh Yes, our June Director of the Month, Kathy McGown, who has kept us entertained with her very colorful emails – Congratulations, Kathy, with your 16 putts in Nine Holes!! June 16 – Individual Stroke Play Winner: Sue Walker (37 Net) -- Awesome!! Cherie Bailey parred Barony #14! Yes, we finally got to play the back Nine!! Congrats Cherie!! Not to mention those “Chippers” – what the heck? There were four Chip-Ins in one day to outmaneuver those punched Greens!! Joann Gibbs – Barony #5; Karen Simpson – Barony # 6; Judi Chmielowiec – Barony #8 – Chip-In for Par; Joan Hazel – Barony # 9

Those ladies like to party!! It cannot always be about golf, so the Nine Hole Lady Golfers get together once a month and let their hair down out of those ponytails and visors! Under the direction of our June Director of the Month, Kathy McGown, we had a Salad Day Theme and everyone out did themselves with very creative salad dishes and a few desserts. Congratulations ladies for being the best fun!! And thank you, Kathy McGown, for organizing our June Girls’ Night Out at the Beach House!! Love you all!! Judi See you next month with the Nine Holers who play 9 or 18, ride or walk!! And more fun with our very own Nefeli Keebaugh as Director of the Month for July! Tees Up, Ladies!!

Trivia Night Winners - “Not great Expectations”

Canada Day By Steve Riley Tom Ryley, our resident Canadian Early Bird, sponsored Canada Day starting out with shots of Sortilege (Canadian whiskey and maple syrup liqueur), Canadian hats, and Canadian labeled Golf balls. Each player picked their ball with one of the 5 Canadian Provinces written on the ball to decide teams. Order of play was the province from east to west. Playing that ball and not losing it, resulted in bonus points for each player (9 of 19 received bonus points). We ended the round with Labatts Blue and Moose Head beer. CANADA DAY History: On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain and a federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. Since 1983, July 1 has been officially known as Canada Day. It was a great day with fun all around.

By Jan Schuppert USTA State Champions Again! Our Port Royal Men’s 4.0, 70+ USTA team has won another South Carolina State Championship Tournament! They qualified for the state championship by winning the local Hilton Head Tournament, 70s division with a record of eight wins and one loss. The state tournament, also held on HHI this year, took place from May 19 through 21. Our team played five matches on courts at Sea Pines Country Club, Shipyard, and South Beach where they successfully defended their championship of last year.

Team members include Captain Rick Rickenbach, Co-captain John Brummitt, Kent James, Danny Spar, Dave Hales, Jim Mansfield, Howard Kirk, Hank Iannuzzi, and Dave Partington. The next challenge for this team is to compete in the 65+ local HHI USTA fall season.
