HAPPY HALLOWEEN
October 31st is Halloween and is now celebrated in many countries around the world. Here at HEY Magazine we hope you have an amazing time, and to help we've put together some helpful tips and cool facts. The tradition of Halloween on 31st October comes from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was the Celtic New Year and they celebrated it on 1st November because that was the end of summer and harvest time (life) and the beginning of winter (death). It was also the time for ghosts to return to earth for a day. People would have large fires, and wear special clothes in the hope of staying safe from ghosts. In AD 609, the Catholic Church put the Christian celebration of All Saints Day on 1st November. In AD 1000. Halloween – moved to the night of the 31st. Pumpkins The Celts carved faces into vegetables like turnips, potatoes and squash to scare the ghosts and other spirits and make them go away. Over the years people have become more inventive with their design and if you search the internet you can find some really creative designs, why not try some out yourselves. We love being able to pick out a pumpkin and although our children are older, we still spend an evening carving out our designs and placing them at the door with a safety candle. Fancy dress 6
www.heymagazine.co.uk | October Issue - 2021
The Celts were afraid of the ghosts that came on Samhain. If they went outside after dark, they covered their faces with masks. They hoped any ghosts they met would think they were ghosts too and would leave them alone. In the late 19th century, people tried to make Halloween less about ghosts more about celebrating the season with a party for neighbours and family. That’s why people today wear all kinds of Halloween costumes, not just scary ones. For weeks our high street supermarkets have had stocks of outfits, sweets, buckets, and decorations to help you kit out your family and decorate your house. Trick or treat Trick or treating has been a long standing tradition, with families of all ages going door to door collecting sweets/treats. The 'trick' part of this tradition isn't something that we see much of in England and is not something we'd recommended to our readers. And while the weather may not stay dry, the fun and laughter will be plentiful, how can you not love free sweets/treats, fresh air and time with family and friends. Here at HEY Magazine HQ, we hope that you have an amazing time. Stay safe and enjoy!!

Think Mental Health During Covid and coming out of the pandemic we have experienced an increase in Mental Health issues. IFS analysis of longitudinal data from Understanding Society study found that, taking into account pre-pandemic trajectories, Mental Health has worsened substantially (by 8.1% on average) as a result of the pandemic.
1. BURDEN 2. EMBARRASSMENT 3. WEAKNESS
We at Think Mental Health are trying to reduce these statistics by delivering our Accredited Youth First Aid For Mental Courses.
SOME TIPS TO PROMOTE GOOD MENTAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING • Balanced diet • Sleeping well • Exercise • Doing something you enjoy • Avoid alcohol, smoking, drugs. • Connect with others be sociable • Do things for others • Ask for help • Technology Detox • Fresh Air / Sunlight • Practice Gratitude (3 things each morning what your grateful for) • Learn a new skill • Talk about your feelings • Take a break • Meditation (mindfulness)
One man in the UK takes their own lives every two hours (STOP AND THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND). 75% of all suicides are men 25% women.
All the tips above will help you enormously, but if you do the three main principles, it will go a long way to promoting good Mental Health.
Three main stigmas why men don't talk are:
EAT WELL | SLEEP WELL | EXERCISE. Written by Paul Longley at Think Mental Health
Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year in England. 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week. Over 75% of Mental Health occurs before the ages of 25. One in 7 young people aged 4-17 years experience a mental health condition in any given year. 13.9% of children and young people (aged 4 to 17 years) met the criteria for a diagnosis of a mental disorder in the last 12 months.

#FOSTER4HULL
You don't need to be a superhero to foster and make a difference Hull | East Riding | North Lincolnshire
Join hundreds of people already fostering with Hull City Council
Eligibility To be able to foster with Hull Fostering you need to:
Hull Fostering are the largest fostering service in the local area with hundreds of fostering households across the sub-region, caring for Hull children and young people and we have many different types of fostering to suit you.
Criteria: • Be over 21 years of age • Live within 30 miles of Hull • Have a spare bedroom solely for a foster child
Fostering or Supported Lodgings involves looking after and supporting a child or young person in your home when they are not able to live with their own family. At the very heart of everything, both our Fostering Team and our Foster Carers aim to provide the safest, most nurturing care possible to children and young people. Being a foster carer or supported lodgings provider is not always easy, as children who need this can have suffered significant trauma, however it is extremely rewarding as you see the progress children can make in your care. If you decide to foster we will help you through each step of your journey towards becoming a foster carer and thereafter.
You can be an existing parent or not have any children currently, work part-time or full time, be unemployed or retired… and still foster a child. Can you provide a child a safe place in a loving home? If you would like to know more about fostering, the fostering process and if it is right for you, then request an information pack today. You will need: • To be over 21 • To have a spare room in your property • Life experience of being independent • To have the time and commitment to support a young person
• •
Do you have a spare room? Could you provide a bridge to independent living for a young person age 16-21?
The Supported Lodgings Service is about providing young people aged 16 – 21 the skills and experience they need to be able to eventually live independently by themselves. Matching you and your lodger We take a great deal of care in matching your lodger with you, and we involve you in the selection process. You yourself have the final say in who shares your home. We have taken time to get to know you and the kind of lodgings you can provide, and take into account your needs and the requirements of the young person. The greatest need in our area is for accommodation to suit young people from 16 – 18, usually coming out of foster care, but placements can be for people up to the age of 24 if the young person is in Higher Education. We recently spoke to Laura and Busilana, who have been providing support lodgings for Hull City Council. Over the years they have supported several young people. They explained how they have been supporting young people who are unaccompanied asylum seekers through, not only their processes, but supporting them being adults, helping them with basic skills such as how to cook and clean, how to budget, create routines, be confident and independent. Laura tells us how "there are some challenges supporting people going through the asylum process, which is very dramatic in itself, and because of the pandemic people are waiting longer for decisions and the young people might have lived through war. We support them with that, but also we're given support from different professionals and projects in the city, that we can refer into, giving the young people someone to talk too." Who can be a Supported Lodgings provider We are looking to recruit suitable supported lodgings providers from the Hull and East Riding area who can provide a safe and supportive environment for young people leaving care or other young people who are unable to live at home. 14

Regardless of: • If you own or rent your home • Whether you work, are in education or unemployed • Your sexual orientation, gender or religion • You receive excellent support and a weekly financial allowance You have your own allocated Supported Accommodation Worker and among the benefits you receive are • Financial allowance paid weekly at the equivalent foster care rates • Continuous training appropriate to you if required • Professional support from people who have wide experience in dealing with vulnerable young people These questions can help you determine if you have the potential to be a Supported Lodgings provider • Do I have a spare room in my home? • Do I like having young people around? • Can I relate to young people and their lives? • Do I listen and try to see other people’s points of view? • Am I happy to pass on my skills and experience in a friendly way? • Can I communicate effectively with different people? • Am I willing to take advice from others? • Can I be fair and firm when I need to be? • Am I prepared to ask for help when I need it? If you’ve answered yes to several of these questions, you have some of the requirements you’ll need as a Supported Lodgings Provider. As long as you have the spare room, with training and support you can always develop all these qualities and more. Looking to the future: Aim Higher are here to promote social inclusion for the benefit of individuals and their families, from becoming socially excluded, where relevant.
Aim Higher was set up in 2016 to help support families in Hull and East Riding affected by Autism and Mental Health in children and young people. We are local selffunded charity ran by parents of children with autism and are extremely passionate about supporting the whole family by organising events, activities, training, support groups, 1-1 support and raising awareness in the community as we feel this is important to help children and young people feel included preventing isolation and exclusion. Our journey during Covid: At the beginning of the pandemic many families tried their best to protect their children and young people affected by autism as with the condition sees 70% suffering from mental health conditions including anxiety, so this would have a massive impact. This proved difficult as everyone was talking about nothing else but COVID-19 bringing anxiety, worry and stress. Schools and shops began to close leaving families like mine in a difficult position because schools are often a safe haven which sees a consistent routine and relationship’s that have taken years to build up. It was particularly difficult for services like Speech Therapy, Psychologists and other professionals moving to online appointments which for someone with autism can be extremely difficult due to eye contact, concentration and not being able to feel the emotions through body language which then doesn’t reflect a true picture of the child and their needs. Like most families, homeschooling comes with its challenges too. Often, children and young people with Autism see things very black and white, school-is-school and home-ishome, and to try and change that brings anxiety, meltdowns, work refusal and even self-harm, affecting their education and mental state. Furthermore, for parents/Carers and siblings, school gives the family a break to help recover their own mental health and have self-care because living with autism and many cohort conditions have a huge strain on families and around 80% of relationships breakdown. Many lifeline clubs, social activities and sports were also cancelled which keep our children and young people active, social and avoids loneliness encouraging inclusion.
We help to promote social inclusion among children and young adults with autism or mental health conditions and their parents/carers/families who are socially excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of their disabilities by: • Providing educational and informative support that enables maximum educational opportunities. • Raising public awareness of the issues families and individuals with ASC and mental health face, in relation to their educational and social exclusion. • Administrating workshops, forums, advocacy, general support and help for parents and carers to become empowered and more confident in their roles. • Arranging recreational activities and opportunities for children and young people and their families with ASC and mental health conditions. • To assist in such ways as the charity trustees think fit including advocacy for; education needs, mental health support in crisis for individuals up to the age of 25. Also to support mental heath and wellbeing for parents, carers and individuals. • To support parents and carers through the education, health and social care plan procedure. • The provision of recreational and leisure time activities provided in the interest of social skills designed to enhance individuals quality of life; verbal or non verbal. • Providing activities to meet individual need to promote social inclusion; were applicable. • To support young people, through activities, accessing an educational provision, mental health support and general wellbeing. • To act as a resource for parents, carers and young people up to the age of 25 by providing support as a means of: • Advancing in life and helping young people with ASC or mental health conditions, by supporting families and individuals to enable them by signposting to the correct services, to help develop their skills, and reach their full potential. • Advancing education. • Empowering parents. At/In times of crisis, it’s important that families have the means to contact individuals having gone through (or are going through) the same or similar experiences. This is a substantial amount of money which many people do not have. Furthermore, if a person is not able to afford this cost, there are very few options available to them.
Factors behind rising costs include the funeral industry being unregulated, with businesses free to set their prices as they wish. Meanwhile land prices are increasing, cemeteries are filling up and crematoria are costly to run.
Support from the government is limited. For example, the Social Fund Funeral Expenses Payment in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, is only available to people on income-related benefits and some tax credits. Even then, the complex criteria disqualifies thousands from receiving an award. In 2018-2019 the average total payment for a successful Funeral Expenses Payment application was £1,534, which is only around 40% of the average cost of a simple funeral. As a result, the Funeral Expenses Payment is still leaving people with a potential shortfall in the thousands. On top of this, making a claim can be a long and complicated process, during which the funeral may be put on hold. This often leaves people feeling confused and frustrated at a very stressful and disorientating time. If no one is able to pay, or there is no way of making up the shortfall from a Funeral Expenses Payment award (or Funeral Support Payment in Scotland), it may be possible to access a public health funeral through the local authority. In 2020 the Government issued good practice guidance for public health funerals. However as this is guidance, and not a statutory requirement, in reality there are huge discrepancies across the country, with many vulnerable people receiving a poor service. There is also a lot of stigma associated with public health funerals, often still referred to by the media as “paupers' funerals”. Nonetheless the number of people turning to public health funerals increased by 70% between 2015 and 2018. As the average cost of a funeral in the UK continues to rise, and the impact of austerity continues to bite, so will the burden of funeral poverty.
This issue is further complicated by a lack of price transparency within the funeral industry. It is difficult to find clear, comparable information about how much things cost and by when they need to be paid. There is also huge variation in funeral prices across the country. When combined with bereaved people’s sense of disorientation, potential inexperience in arranging funerals, and a natural desire to ‘sort it out quickly’, this can all result in many people buying funerals they cannot afford and taking on unmanageable and devastating debt. The average debt taken on by people who struggled to pay for a funeral in 2020 was £1,751. This figure has reduced from the alltime high of £1990 in 2019. Funeral poverty can also have a hugely detrimental impact on people’s emotional wellbeing. Whilst arranging a funeral, bereaved people can experience a broad range of emotions, including a need to provide the person who has died with a meaningful tribute. This can lead to anxiety about ‘getting it right’ and, if there are limited funds, an overwhelming sense of guilt, distress and shame. Therefore funeral poverty gets in the way of people’s ability to grieve. Heavenly Services believe that everyone should be able to access a dignified and meaningful funeral without worrying about the financial burden. We believe in price transparency, we offer a variety of funeral services, and pre-payment plans when necessary. As a team we are committed to give everyone the guidance, care and support prior, during and the after the funeral service.

Out with the old and in with the new!
The bar, lounge area, and the ‘The Business Hub’, add a business café and business meeting services. With free Wi-Fi, free parking with easy in and out access, it’s perfect for meetings or catching up on emails whilst having a coffee. The room is tastefully decorated as a bright open space with new flooring, wide screen TV’s and comfy seats. There’s also provision for conferences, training and corporate events, including a modern boardroom with a conference table and seating for 8.
Formerly, the Hull Indoor Sports Centre, located on Harpings Road, just off National Avenue, Hull, the venue is fondly remembered for its 5-a-side football pitches and Little Monkeys children’s soft play area. Now, rebranded as Active+, with new owners and management team, they’ve invested heavily in updating facilities and refurbishing the centre as a premier family multi-sports, leisure and venue hire facility. A lot has changed and this venue has something for everyone!
Two large function rooms are perfect for celebrations including weddings, christenings, parties and live music.
During the Covid19 pandemic, they embarked on the task of transforming the tired centre into a fresh and modern venue for all… and they succeeded! It’s the home of the popular Little Monkeys children’s indoor soft play area, and the renovations started here, including a new café and menu, new equipment, flooring and seating area. The separate Sensory Den is perfect for early years and SEN children. While lockdown and Covid19 wreaked havoc for the world, we have seen some positive changes emerging. Active+ developed new procedures to keep customers safe, with revised capacity numbers, increased comprehensive and thorough cleaning schedules including fogging, and creating more space between tables. As restrictions started to ease, Active+ decided to keep the new measures in place, receiving positive feedback from customers who say it makes them feel safer and more confident about going back out after so long inside.
Sport has always been at the heart of the centre and boasts four outdoor sports pitches and one indoor hard-court pitch for football, hockey and cricket, in addition to many other sports. Offering corporate football leagues, children’s football training and coaching, casual pitch hire and much more. The updated snooker hall includes seven refurbished tables, darts board, pool table and its own bar area. Active+ are host to many more sports and leisure clubs, teams and groups, from dance classes to over 55’s meetings, coffee mornings and more. The staff are all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. If you haven’t been to Active+ recently, we recommend you visit and checkout the changes for yourself, and enjoy everything this venue has to offer.
At Frames Snooker Club... we pride ourselves on having the best cue sports facilities in East Yorkshire as well as darts and a
licensed bar. We are your number one venue for snooker and pool and the perfect place to have fun and a frame!

7 simple checks to prepare your vehicle for winter With busy lives, it’s sometimes difficult to find time to make preparations, but checking your car is ready for winter is a really important job to do. Breakdowns or accidents caused by unsafe tyres will be at minimum an inconvenience, and at worst could be deadly. Make sure you’re one step ahead of cold and snowy winter weather by doing a few simple checks on your vehicle today. 1. Fuel It may sound obvious but ensure you have enough fuel for your journey – it is a good idea to fill-up before setting off. Cars use more fuel in heavy traffic and start/stop conditions which can be regular occurrences, especially in wintry weather. 2. Oil Check your oil level using the dip stick and top-up if necessary – check your handbook if you are unfamiliar with how to do this and to ensure you use the correct oil. 3. Tyres Check your tyre tread depth and air pressure. Well-maintained tyres are vital to give you traction and grip on icy, wet surfaces. Your car’s recommended tyre pressure can be found either in your car’s manual or inside the driver’s door. The legal tyre tread depth for cars in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm. Check your tyre tread depth using either a tyre gauge, the marker bars on your tyre or a 20 pence coin. If you can’t see the outer band
of the 20p your tyres are within the legal limit. 4. Check your wiper blades In winter your windscreen can get a very dirty from rain, snow, ice and road salt. Maintaing good visibility is always imperative. 5. Coolant Coolant (a mixture of water and antifreeze) is pumped around your engine to cool it. You should regularly check your engine coolant level and top-up if required. Remember only check this when the engine is cool otherwise you risk scalding yourself. It’s not normal for coolant levels to drop suddenly, so if it does, get it checked out at a garage. 6. Electrics Check your lights and indicators are all working properly and replace bulbs or fuses if required. Car batteries need replacing every few years (according to usage) so make sure you get yours checked at your car service. 7. Screen wash Make sure you top up your screenwash with a product that is effective down to at least -15 degrees Celsius. This additive helps to keep the windscreen free of ice and dirt, particularly the winter road grime caused by road salting and gritting which can cause visibility issues. There is also the risk of a frozen windscreen which is another reason to ensure you use a proper anti-freeze screen wash.

Judges revealed for Strictly 2021! The judges were announce, which included the return of Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse to our judging panel. In addition to our tremendous trio, Strictly's longest serving Professional Dancer Anton Du Beke will be taking up residency on the opposite side of the judges desk this year for the entire series, following a two week stint as a judge in 2020. Due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding international travel restrictions caused by COVID-19, Bruno Tonioli, who has been a fixture on Strictly since 2004 and is also a judge on Dancing with the Stars in the USA, will be unable to take part in the series this year. Anton Du Beke joined Strictly during its first series and is the only professional dancer to have danced in every series to date, bringing plenty of experience and expertise to the panel. Anton Du Beke says: “My loves I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to be stepping into Bruno’s brogues for the next series of Strictly. It’s a dream come true to be judging alongside the best of the best and I promise to be kinder to all the couples than any of them have ever been to me.” Bruno Tonioli says: “Whilst I am gutted to not be on the show this year there is one person and one person only that could take my place - it’s just a shame they weren’t available...haha! Darlings I’m kidding, I’m kidding! Seriously though, I have to tell you, Anton IS Mr Strictly and if anybody is filling in for me, it has to be him. I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way and I am so excited to see him waggle his paddle.”

Considered one of the most charismatic live performers at work today, the original Cockney Rebel tours with a full 6-piece rock band and also fronts the Steve Harley Acoustic Band. Music is very much still his first love. “We see the world and play to great audiences; how good is that! I see great cities and their galleries and museums in our down-time, beautiful landscapes from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean coast, all in my life as a touring musician. It’s still the greatest job on earth!” Harley said recently. The Live shows include the big hit singles, like Judy Teen, Mr Soft, Love’s A Prima Donna, the legendary Sebastian, as well as the evergreen Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me). That song is noted by PRS as one of the most-played songs in history on British Radio. Steve was awarded a Gold Badge of Merit by the British Academy of Songwriters, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Acoustic Music by the British Festival of Acoustic Music in 2018.

Being invited by Ringo Starr to join his All Starr Band for tours of Europe in June 2018 and the USA that September, during which the band played three 10cc songs, elevated his profile yet further. Another event, although not publicly known, gave Graham a further lift. Accessing Grants Grant application processes are not always straightforward. Businesses often lack understanding of the technical jargon and where to access all the information required for the application. If you attempt to complete the application yourself, the process can be confusing, take a lot of time and potentially reduce your chance of success. To improve your chances of success we would always recommend using an expert who knows the process inside out, what information needs including in the application and how it should be worded. This will save you time and stress and they’ll advise on what other grants are available. Eligibility To be eligible for business grants, you must be an SME who’s not in financial difficulty and operating in a B2B market. Each scheme has its own criteria – sector, size of grant and geographical area. Whatever your next project is, always check if there’s grant funding available.
