Editor's Note Welcome to another issue of HEY Magazine. The response to our first magazine has been amazing, thank you for all of the comments and feedback. However, I won’t lie… it’s been a weird month. We knew we weren’t launching our new magazine at the best of times and this is not the ideal climate for launching our new brand. Unfortunately, the HEY Magazine team have been struck down by Covid19 during October, and then the winter flu too - how unlucky is that! On a happier note, we used our random generator to select our lucky competition winners for the October competitions: Little Monkeys Spooktacular Halloween tickets for 2 children (Deborah T) The Creedence Collection gig tickets at Beverley Memorial Hall - Gig Cancelled Circus of Horrors - 2 tickets (Rosalind A) Amazon Echo Dot (Peter O’N)

You’ll find more fantastic competitions to enter in this issue, with the opportunity to win 2 tickets to see the fantastic Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and 2 tickets to see Slade. Our team are already hard at work, working with some amazing local businesses and organisations for an amazing December Christmas issue. Watch this space… All the best, The HEY Magazine Team!

HULL JETs return to the Ice HEY Magazine are so excited that the Hull Ice Arena has re-opened and we can welcome back the Hull Jets Ice Hockey Team!

This is great news for the city of Hull, hardened ice hockey fans and newbies alike. Ice Hockey is a fun, fast, intense & exciting game of skill, both in skating ability and hockey skills, and a great game for all of the family to watch. You just cannot beat watching a live game! Hull Jets were formed in 2013, they are the NIHL Division 2 North League winners for 2019-2020 season and are ready to step back out onto the ice for their new season after missing a year due to Covid19. The Management Team and Coaching staff for Hull Jets provide amazing opportunities, coaching and support for many children and young persons wanting to take up this exciting, adrenaline-filled sport, building skills such as an aerobic base, speed, agility and strength, with adult players hoping to be selected for the Hull Jets Ice Hockey Team. Like all grassroots sports teams, Hull Jets and all of their associated junior teams need the support of the amazing people of Hull. We are so lucky to have an ice arena in Hull, on our doorstep. The games are very well-priced for spectators and very affordable for families to go and watch live games and your support would mean everything to this local team. Hull Jets play their first game this weekend The team have been training hard for the last couple of weeks and will face Altrincham Aces in an NIHL2 North Cup game. Altrincham currently sit top of the North cup group with 3 points from 2 games (1 win, 1 OTL). It would be great to see you down at Hull Arena.

Coming soon to

NEW – Goalkeeper Training Sessions

We are also super-excited to announce our new Goalkeeper Training Sessions at the end of November!

The experienced sports teams and coaches at Active+ provide various junior football coaching sessions for children aged 4-16.

NEW - Football Coaching Programmes

We are excited to announce that our new football coaching sessions start soon at Active+. These are structured sessions delivered over several weeks to juniors aged between 4 & 16 (to be split into appropriate age groups) and follow the structure and guidance of the England DNA Foundation Phase. These sessions create positive, enjoyable, and memorable coaching sessions that help your child develop their own skills and abilities, focussing on the maximum possible time with a ball at their feet in every session. These coaching sessions are perfect to complement existing training sessions if your child is already in a team, if they feel they are behind compared to other teammates or, help them develop the skills and confidence to approach a new team to join. These sessions also develop a love of physical activity plus skills and abilities that are useful in all areas of life. Give your child the support they need to develop their football skills individually and for the benefit of their team, complimenting their existing team training sessions. Call the Sports Team at Active+ today to book a place on this course.

For existing goalkeepers or those trying goalkeeping for the first time, these structured sessions develop the essential goalkeeping skills often missed in football team training sessions because much of the focus tends to be on the higher number of on-field players as opposed to the goalkeeper(s). Balancing time and training between most of the team being on-field players and the 1 or 2 players that may be goalkeepers is a very difficult balance to achieve in teams through no fault of the managers and coaching team however, this can leave goalkeepers feeling left-out, undervalued, demotivated and unhappy. These Goalkeeper Training sessions are perfect to complement existing training sessions if your child already plays for a local club or school football team. Also, these sessions are great for players who are new to goalkeeping and maybe want to try it for the first time. This carefully structured course produces week-on-week progression, focussing on the key elements of goalkeeping including correct techniques, positioning, diving, distribution, communication, and footwork to name a few. Give your child the best support for goalkeeping and call the Sports Team at Active+ today to book a place on this course.

The Business Hub @ Active+, Hull The Business Hub is an important part of the recent refurbishment at Active+ on Harpings Road, National Avenue, Hull. This facility has something for everybody. Personally, I use The Business Hub as a great place for working whilst out and about, on-the-road, in-between meetings whilst visiting clients. The easy in and out access combined with free parking makes this so much quicker and easier than trying to stop at most other coffee shops whilst maybe having to pay for car parking. It provides modern meeting facilities in a central location. Decorated in neutral, calming colour tones, The Business Hub offers a quiet and comfortable place to stop, grab a tea, coffee, or cold drink and maybe a bite to eat, whilst using the free Wi-Fi to check emails, prepare or de-brief that all-important meeting, meet colleagues, clients, suppliers, partners, and associates. The Study is a brand-new training facility which accommodates eight attendees. Designed with the modern meeting in mind, this facility is popular for training, seminars, and face-to-face business meetings. The room features a modern boardroom conference table with seating for eight people, a whiteboard, and a TV screen with HDMI connectivity for presentations. Set in a light and airy part of the facility, guests are private, yet comfortable and refreshments can be provided for meeting attendees. If you’re out and about, taking care of business, in and around Hull & East Yorkshire, stop by The Business Hub at Active+ and try it for yourself.

National Stress Awareness Day - 3 November 2021 National Stress Awareness Day was set up by the International Stress Management Association, with the mission of raising awareness of the effects of psychological distress in the workplace and strategies to address it. It’s easy for work to get on top of us, and the stress can eventually lead to further mental health problems. We’ve got lots of tips and ideas to help you manage your mental health and wellbeing so you can be your best at work. Work life balance - Laura Archer, author of ‘Gone For Lunch: 52 things to do in your lunch break’ Did you know that a year’s worth of lunch breaks equates to almost 6 extra weeks of annual leave? This is what Laura discovered when she decided to reclaim her lunch breaks for herself. The results were increased energy, happiness, and greater job satisfaction. Laura will help you identify the signs of “burnout” before they happen, and provide some practical tips for achieving a work/life balance, starting with walking away from your desk! Exercise - Harry Thomas, No1 Fitness Harry Thomas has always displayed a passion for fitness, not to mention an entrepreneurial streak. He knows from his own experience and from coaching clients that exercise has a huge impact on mental health. Harry outlines the link between physical and mental wellbeing and offers 5 practical tips for achieving better physical and mental health through regular exercise. Managing Stress - Mental Health UK Team Stress is a big issue for Britain today. In the UK’s largest ever stress survey, 74% of people said stress has made them feel overwhelmed and unable to cope. But there are lots of little ways you can help

manage stress every day. Andy and Dave from Mental Health UK share some of the ways they handle stress at work, and some small changes which can really make all the difference. Sleep - Faye, Eve Sleep Having recently conducted a survey with over 2000 Brits, Eve Sleep discovered that 79% of us struggle to switch off at bedtime and 60% of us wake up in the night with thoughts of work and other worries. The most common knock-on effects include tiredness, being less productive, being snappy and feeling over-emotional. Faye will help you to identify bad sleep patterns and offer some practical tips for improving your nights’ sleep. Taking your thoughts to court Negative thinking can lead to feeling stressed, which can prevent us from performing our best at work. Taking your thoughts to court is a simple, yet effective, exercise taught in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help you address negative thinking. Our simple video helps you to learn this technique and put it into practice at work. Talking about mental health at work If we noticed a colleague had a bad cough or had started to limp we would ask them how they’re doing and show our support. But sometimes we can be nervous about asking someone how they are doing mentally. Information taken from Mental Health UK website. HOROSCOPES November 2021

All the ideas that have accompanied you in the last month will now bring the expected results. An elderly person from your immediate environment has been following all your steps and actions for a while. If you need advice or financial support, you can go without it and will certainly help you. You just have to show that you are trustworthy and responsible.

In November you will experience a lot of mood swings. You will balance between joy and sadness. Very often, you will be locked in without allowing yourself to others, especially in the first days of the month. In these difficult days, you will help the presence of a loved one (if it was not the reason for this grief), so spend every free moment with her.

It is the right time to focus primarily on trivialities and matters concerning everyday life. If you just go to work, you will quickly find out that you have new opportunities and skills that you did not even know about before and would not let you come! Therefore, do not waste your precious time and get to work!

November will be a good month to start your vacation rest planning. You will feel the irresistible temptation to finish all previous activities and hide away from the noise, the hustle and bustle, because it has recently been so overwhelming. That’s why if you get the right opportunity (and it will happen in the first week), go on vacation or to friends.

November will be a month in which it will be good to slow down and start thinking about your savings. Finally, you will have more free time, which you can devote entirely to matters related to family and friends. In your zodiac sign Venus will make you start to develop at a rapid pace. And others will pay more attention to your personal charm and goodness of heart.

Traveling, getting to know new places, traditions, cultures and ways of living is your faithful passion. You will feel a strong need to travel and explore this month again. If you manage to implement this plan, it is necessary to take with you a close person or even a group of friends who have similar interests to you.

November is a waiting period for change for many people. You should show more interest and care for your home and family matters - the more so that you need so little to be happy. In the middle of the month you will put on your own in an important matter related to the management of money, international travel and international contacts.

November will bring more attention to your life related to professional matters. Be sure to analyze what is in your life, what is the reason for disappointment, what should be new or changed. Until then, leave your thoughts in the zone of dreams and fantasies, and when the time comes, put them into action.

In November there will be events that will seriously affect your behavior. Awake care instincts will awaken. You will want to do something important, something that will have a spectacular meaning for other people. Be careful though, because one of your loved ones will try to use your help and goodness of heart to achieve your own goals.

In November you will be seen as a very social and hospitable person. Many meetings with friends before you. It is possible that many interesting adventures will take place in your life with people who live far away from you. In addition, be prepared that this month you will have a lot of things on your mind and for this reason you will lose a lot of energy and money.

November will be the month in which you’ll prove a few things to everyone. First of all, you will show your professional position. You will prove that nothing is able to dissuade you from the previously established plan. You do not throw words into the wind and you do not make promises without coverage.

November is another very successful month in your life. You’ll find answers to all of the questions that have been bothering you so far. Try to approach the different stages of your life more objectively and show that when they take you seriously, as you deserve, they will certainly benefit from it.

TOTALLY TINA ROCKS BILLINGHAM prestigious accolades along the way have earned Justine’s ‘Totally Tina’ a deserved top spot in the musical tribute world. Justine admits she has been observing her beloved muse from the start; constantly honing her homage to the legend herself with passion and an unrivalled attention to detail, to deliver the most authentic recreation of the rock and roll Queen’s live performances.

The Supreme Recreation of a Tina concert ‘TOTALLY TINA’ rocks into its 12th year coming to BILLINGHAM – Forum Theatre on both Friday 17th December and Saturday 18th December 2021! Come shake a tail feather with the UK’s original, award-winning Tina Turner tribute …. aka Justine Riddoch and her talented cast. When Tina burst onto the scene, she won the hearts of music fans from the outset, creating a fearsome reputation for her live performances – and those never-ending legs! Early hits River Deep – Mountain High, Proud Mary and Nutbush City Limits were just a taste of what was to come. We Don’t Need Another Hero, Simply the Best, What’s Love Got to Do With It, I Don’t Wanna Lose You and When the Heartache is Over propelled her to stadium concert stardom. Supported by her super-talented band and dazzling dancing girls in sequins, feathers and diamonds, Justine is the ULTIMATE Tina (a National Tribute Awards winner since 2013). She’s got the looks, she’s got the moves, she’s got the legs, but most of all, she’s got THE voice. Join an army of loyal fans for a truly authentic, fun-packed musical spectacular! Twelve years have passed since Totally TINA first sprang to life in the vibrant city of Liverpool, but a Lifetime Achievement Award and many other

She’s determined the Show will always be known as ‘Simply The Best’, which is particularly fitting as 2019 was the 30th Anniversary of the much-loved song of the same name, released in 1989. The cast and crew of Totally Tina are pulling out all the stops this year with the promise of a brand new, custom-made performances featuring a whole host of fresh ideas, coupled with the band’s now famous humour. The Show is designed to make the audience feel that the legendary performer is right back in front of them, strutting her stuff on the most famous legs in show business! This year’s production is a heady mix of nostalgia and surprise with all the favourite Tina Turner hits, her best duets, muchloved covers and the odd twist in the tale. Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonky Woman, Get Back, It’s Only Rock and Roll and The Bitch is Back have been added to a set which includes Simply The Best, Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits and Private Dancer to name a few. All the songs are enhanced by the customary flourish of sparkling stiletto heels, flamboyant tail feathers, high energy dance routines and musical genius. There’s plenty of audience engagement and post-show ‘meet and greets’ too, making the Show more personal. In fact, it’s probably the closest thing to a live Tina Turner concert! Justine, a past winner of cult talent show, Stars In Their Eyes performing as Anastacia, is known in the business for her enthusiasm and drive, and has been singing

professionally for 30 years. She is justifiably proud of her cast and crew who’ve played a huge part in helping her to create the longest running Tina Turner tribute. She said: “I am thrilled by the success of this production – we have come so far! Having been told on many occasions that I sounded like Tina, I decided to take the plunge and then spent hours familiarising myself with her life story and scrutinising video footage to watch mannerisms and body movements. We always add our own personality to the Show each year; the element of surprise keeps things fresh, but my ultimate aim is to remain faithful to a Tina Turner live concert paying tribute to her career, and bring the best version of this amazing woman; her voice, her passion and even her legs, to her many fans. That’s why we love it when people tell us that they go away feeling as though they have seen the real thing.Totally Tina has been the ultimate Tina Turner tribute for the past seven years, from 2013 to 2019 winning Best Female Artist, Best Choreography, Best Sound & Lighting and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the NTMA, and in 2020 winning Best Tribute at the NREA. The band plays to audiences all over the country and in Europe, and has performed at the Cover Festival in Davos, Switzerland (Tina Turner’s new home country) for the last 2 years. Justine added: “We love what we do, and we’re lucky enough to have an incredibly loyal army of fans here and overseas. We hope to be meeting many more new fans this year.” Editor’s Notes: Justine is no stranger to the stage, having been treading the boards on the north-west circuit for more than 26 years. Her career changed direction in 2002 when she won ITV’s ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ as Anastacia, and for the next six years, her tribute show, ‘Justine is Anastacia’ performed all over the

world. When her muse stopped releasing albums, Justine created ‘Totally Tina’ and the rest, as they say, is history. Testimonials: “Close your eyes and Tina was there, open them and she was still there! Justine and her dancers and band are outstanding... Totally TINA! is Totally Terrific. A fitting tribute in every way with pure passion pulsing through the whole performance” NORTH WEST END The National UK Tribute Awards: Recognises the enormous contribution tribute acts make to the entertainment industry in both economic and artistic value. HEY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH… DAVE HEMINGWAY OF SUNBIRDS Having grown-up with an eclectic music taste, there was always something special about listening to great bands and artists from our local area of Hull & East Riding, and there are a couple that stand out. Especially, the former members of The Housemartins and The Beautiful South. I was so pleased to be asked to chat with Dave Hemingway as he starts his ‘new chapter’ with his new band, Sunbirds, with new songs and a totally new sound. Sunbirds is made up of Dave Hemingway, songwriter & guitarist Phil Barton, violinist & singer, Laura Wilcockson, and session drummer Marc Parnell. They are currently playing their live gigs and have released their album, ‘Cool To Be Kind’ in 2020. The sound from Sunbirds is different to the music we’ve heard from Dave previously. Dave explains how their music has an ‘American roots feel to it’ and you can feel Phil Barton’s love and influence of American country music coming through in their tracks with the delicate use of pedal steel guitars, banjos, and mandolins in some of their tracks and harder, grungy guitar solos in others. Dave explains how the band are ‘very proud of what they’ve achieved’ and songs are written about some of their own experiences. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ is a ‘true album, written as an album as opposed to a collection of songs or singles that were chosen to be on it’. I asked Dave when he first realised that he wanted to pursue music and he explained that he was 6-years old, and it was his brother’s birthday party. Dave was asked to be the DJ for the party, taking care of the music, he picked up a record by The Beatles, ‘She’s Leaving Home’ from ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ when he was struck with this feeling he’d never had before and knew he wanted to be in music. Dave and his school friend Hugh Whitaker, both shared an interest in drumming at school, and when the classed were asked who would like to learn, they put their hands up. They both went on to play for bands after school, first the Newpolitans with Dave Rotheray on bass, and then the Velvetones. Whilst at university in London, Hemingway was the drummer and a founding member of The Shoppers. 18

Hugh Whitaker drumming for the Housemartins. In 1987, Dave was working as a purchase ledger clerk for Crystal Motor Group when he got a call from Rotheray telling him Whitaker had left The Housemartins. Dave quit his job in March 1987 and quickly found himself recording in the studio for The Housemartins second album, ‘The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death’. The result of Dave’s experience throughout his career combined with his recognisable mellow and melodical vocal tones, their new album is pleasure to listen to. I asked Dave what his favourite track on the album is and he talked about how ‘Stars Still Shine’ resonates with a ‘personal vibe’ with him. The Sunbirds album is available to buy on CD or listen on popular music streaming platforms, you can find links to all of these from their website www.sunbirds.co.uk or http:// smarturl.it/p6n3s7 Post-covid, Sunbirds are in the rehearsal rooms, putting the work in to ‘get good and deliver strong songs’ and are ready to ‘get back out there’ on the road, playing their gigs and working on a ‘proper tour’. You can find more about their upcoming gig dates in HEY Magazine and on their website. To finish our call, I asked Dave, if we looked at the last 3 tracks from his personal playlist, what was he listening to and he replied, ‘probably a collection of tracks by Squeeze’. Finally, I asked Dave what message he’d like to give for fans, past, future, and present, about the Sunbirds, and he replied that they are loving what they are doing and ‘write to play’. He said, ‘this is something new but give us a try’, it’s a ‘new chapter for them’ and they ‘love playing local’ having played iconic local venues such as The Adelphi, where they played their first gig on Saturday 31st July. Sunbirds can’t wait to see you at one of their gigs soon.

THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH’S CO-FOUNDER DAVE HEMINGWAY’S NEW BAND SUNBIRDS we want whether it’s about love, longing, depression or Gary Lineker’s crisp adverts”. Sunbirds ‘Cool To Be Kind’ debut album is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon UK & Music and available in all HMV stores as well as via the website www.sunbirds.co.uk Sunbirds are: Dave Hemingway – Vocals Phil Barton – Guitar Laura Wilcockson – Vocals & Violin Marc Parnell – Drums

The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS. Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/ violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound. Although born and bred in England, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80’s/early 90’s. However, you can only sing about what you know. “Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.” Their debut album produced by cult producer Teo Miller, captures truthful, open-hearted, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary themes as well as ageold matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. “Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves”, says Phil “having said that, there’s no exact science here, we’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever

Steve Harley celebrates his 48th year in music in 2021 and continues to play concerts around the world. He says that playing Live is more than a job, it’s almost his life’s blood. Considered one of the most charismatic Live performers at work today, the original Cockney Rebel tours with a full 6-piece rock band and also fronts the Steve Harley Acoustic Band. Music is very much still his first love. “We see the world and play to great audiences; how good is that! I see great cities and their galleries and museums in our downtime, beautiful landscapes from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean coast, all in my life as a touring musician. It’s still the greatest job on earth!” Harley said recently. The Live shows include the big hit singles, like Judy Teen, Mr Soft, Love’s A Prima Donna, the legendary Sebastian, as well as the evergreen Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me). That song is noted by PRS as one of the most-played songs in history on British Radio. Steve was awarded a Gold Badge of Merit by the British Academy of Songwriters, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Acoustic Music by the British Festival of Acoustic Music in 2018. Recent critical acclaim has included such comments such as “A consummate professional at the top of his game” and “I doubt there was a better gig anywhere in the world last night. Seriously” – Daily Mail reporter. Rod Stewart, who has covered Steve’s song A Friend For Life, describes him as “One of the greatest lyricists Britain has produced.” Mojo commented: “Harley creates songs of deep beauty, full of life’s experiences” and The Times wrote: “An extraordinary concert”.

HEY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH… STEVE HARLEY OF STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL I was genuinely excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to spend time in an exclusive, one-to-one chat with no other than Steve Harley, of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and he was an absolute pleasure to talk to. I grew up listening to their iconic tracks such as Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me).

like all of us, he felt the impact of Covid was keen to be able to start to go back out into the world, albeit tentatively and as safely as possible. For Steve, this meant reaching the point where he could visit Rockwell Studios on a 2-week residential visit for him and his fellow musicians to be able to record his new album, ‘Uncovered’.

Albeit, our chat was over a telephone call, he is such a nice, genuine person, it felt like a real fireside chat between friends. We talked about his career to date, his tour, his new album and his love for Yorkshire and the friendly Yorkshire Folk, and he is known to describe the people of Hull as “super, super people”.

‘Uncovered’ is an album that includes 2 of his own tracks and 9 tracks that are ‘interpretations’ as Steve calls them. The album also includes a new, original track from Steve called ‘I’ve just seen a face’ which has a real folk and country feel. The other 9 tracks are an opportunity for Steve and his talented band of musicians to recreate tracks originally by the likes of David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Hot Chocolate and Longpigs: in their own unique way.

And he really means it. Steve is probably more active in the Hull & East Yorkshire region than many of us realise. Firstly, Steve is a trustee of the Mick Ronson Music Foundation along with Mick’s daughter, Lisa Ronson, and John Bird. Steve and Mick were good friends. Mick Ronson was a superstar, a legend, and a Hull lad, working with the likes of David Bowie, but Mick sadly passed away from liver cancer in 1993. Steve played a tribute concert for Mick in 2016 resulting in a memorial being placed in Queens Gardens. The Mick Ronson Music Foundation is a charity setup to benefit and promote the education of young people within music for Hull and surrounding areas. We’ll be learning more about the Mick Ronson Music Foundation in a future issue of HEY Magazine. Also, Steve recently performed at various Yorkshire venues, one of which was his gig at the Bridlington Spa where he donated tickets to members of the Bridlington Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Steve explained that whenever he performs gigs in a coastal location, he always donates free tickets to volunteers the local RNLI station as a token of thanks and appreciation for the invaluable work they undertake, putting their own lives at risk to save the lives of others at sea. Steve explained where this came from, talking about how he looked up to his dad throughout his life, Steve’s dad is his hero and a great volunteer and, if they could, his dad would have been a volunteer for the RNLI and it something that Steve wanted to do too, but unfortunately, he was unable to due to having Polio as a child. So, Steve tries to help where and when he can, and this is in addition to other charitable work Steve undertakes despite his very busy schedule touring, gigging, recording and of course, spending some very well needed, and deserved, downtime with his wife, Dorothy. Building on a hugely successful career, spanning nearly 50-years, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel have released 5 albums and had 12 singles in the UK singles charts. Steve explained that professional musicians like himself have been on the same journey as many of us, Covid doesn’t favour nor discriminate based on our jobs, success, status, or wealth, and

In part, this is achieved by the recording itself. Steve is incredibly proud of this acoustic album that was recorded with a great sound engineer but absolutely no EQ. Steve explained that there’s no engineering involved by means of digital manipulation or trickery. It is a genuine, authentic, and true sound. Steve describes the album as having a ‘roots feel’ going on to explain that the sound recorded on the album is ‘natural and real’, produced by talented musicians playing ‘organic’ string instruments. Steve loves piano but pianos and keyboards have no place on this album, string instruments and vocals only. What you hear when you listen to the album is exactly what they played and how they played it, and it sounds amazing! You simply must listen to this album. The track ‘Star of Belle Isle’ includes vocals by Eddi Reader. ‘Uncovered’ is available to buy from Steve’s website on vinyl LP or CD and can be signed by Steve himself at no additional charge – www.steveharley.com/shop/music-and-video/cdsand-dvds.html or listen on Spotify. Steve added that his focus right now is on his autumn and winter tour dates and gigs, commenting how he and his fellow musicians are always left astonished by the beauty of our Yorkshire region whilst they travel around on their tours and will often wander from the main routes and opt for routes ‘back and beyond’ to take in the sights of our amazing county. Finally, I asked Steve if he had a message that he wanted to leave for his fans and he asked that we all ‘keep the faith’, be ‘totally honest’ and stay true to ourselves, ‘keep believing’ and wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ for all the love and support he’s had over the years.

HEY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH… DAVE HILL OF SLADE As we approach Christmas, there are a few songs that immediately come to mind, one of which involves the lead singer shouting the lyrics “IT’S CHRISTMAS’, part way through. Of course, I’m talking about “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade. You can imagine my reaction when I was presented with the opportunity for an exclusive, one-to-one chat with Dave Hill, the remaining founding member of Slade, and what a nice chap he is! He has plenty of stories to tell from his successful 6-decade career, with the unique blend of pop, rock ‘n’ roll, outrageous flamboyance, memorable hairstyles, plenty of energy and pure fun, with no less than 23 singles of which 6 were No.1 smash hits plus, 6 smash albums. Many of these tracks seem timeless, still being included today, especially in TV commercials for some of the world’s biggest companies. Tracks such as “Cum On Feel The Noise”, “Coz I Luv You”, “Far Far Away” and of course “Merry Xmas Everybody”. I asked Dave how he got started... Dave explained that he was 13-years old and at senior school in Wolverhampton. His early influences were Elvis, Buddy Holly, The 4 Tops, Little Richard, and The Beatles. He couldn’t get into the music class; he couldn’t read music. He loved music and felt this compelling desire to play music but also felt different, like he had something in him. So, for his Christmas present that year, he picked out a guitar from the ‘Kays Catalogue’. His dad said he wouldn’t spend too much money on a guitar and paid £7.50. Then came Dave’s next challenge... you could only buy right-handed guitars, and Dave was left-handed. He tried playing it upside for a while until he started guitar lessons with his science teacher at school who told Dave that, despite being lefthanded, he needed to play a right-handed guitar. After leaving school, Dave played in a band, ‘The Vendors’ with pal and drummer, Don Powell. Dave worked at Tarmac Limited for two years before starting ‘the best part of his life – being in a group’. Dave desperately wanted to do this, it felt like the ‘right thing’ to do so faced an ultimatum, stay with his job, or start a band. And, with the backing of his dads’ supportive words “give it a go”, Dave took the plunge. Dave formed a band called ‘The Young Ones’ with some school friends. Then, Slade was formed in 1966 with Dave Hill, Jimmy Lea (Bass Player), Don Powell (Drummer) and Noddy Hill (singer), joining forces with former Animal’s bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience Manager, Chas Chandler. When I asked Dave about his influences and what Slade set out to do at the start, Dave explained that they had always set out to just ‘be themselves’ which, for Slade, meant being ‘different’, following their passion. They didn’t want to ‘fit-in’ or even try to ‘blend- ‘in. Yes, in the early days, they had skinhead haircuts for a short while, but their image started to form as they developed this music style very much like the ‘loud and funny music from America’ which many started to describe as ‘Glam Rock’. Dave recalls the origin for the style of Slade being ‘colour, being alive and magic’. The grew their hair over their ears with unique cuts. When dressing for one of his first gigs, he wore a women’s blouse made of satin silk. Some didn’t think he’d get away with it but because it was shiny and glimmered on stage, the crowd loved

22

www.heymagazine.co.uk | November 2021

it. They liked the ‘shiny stuff ’. So, Dave then had trousers made too. One day, whilst in Kensington Market in London, Dave came across a guy selling platform shoes and Dave thought these were cool but, to be super cool, he asked him to add an extra 3-inches to them. The coat then followed… Dave chuckles as he reminisces about hanging up a long dark coat in his parents’ council house, taking a can of silver car spray paint (because this was a new colour for cars at the time) and transforming this coat into a long, shiny jacket. It wasn’t until he moved the coat that he realised he hadn’t put any paper up, that’s when he noticed the silver spray paint around the door and walls with shape of the long coat in the middle. When colour TV became available from 1969, Dave recalls colour “exploding out of the screen” when they appeared on Top Of The Pops, with glitter in his hair, and this had a big impact on their records and their popularity. Slade achieved their first chart hit in 1971 with a Bobby Marchan song “Get Down And Get With It”, then “Coz I Luv You” was released in the same year and was the band’s first No.1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe’s biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan, and other parts of the world. The band had their 6th and final No.1 hit in the UK with “Merry Xmas Everybody” earning the UK Christmas No.1 slot in December 1973. Dave remembers “Cum On Fell The Noize” releasing on a Thursday night in February 1973 when Slade would go straight in at No.1 (becoming the first to do this since The Beatles “Get Back” in 1969) and knock Rod Stewart from the top of the charts. Accompanying the look was the originality of the music playing itself. With such compelling drive and passion to be a musician, Dave created a unique playing style including the ‘Dave Hill Wobble’. A unique sound that is closely compared to the likes of the bending notes played by ‘The Shadows’ and ‘The Beatles’. There is also the unique ‘Super Yob’ guitar that was later made famous by Dave too. Of course, there are also the unique song titles that have their own spellings such as “Take Me Bak ‘Ome” and Mama We’er All Crazee Now”. Dave attributes their successful careers to the ‘enjoyment of doing it’ and ‘not trying to work out the ending’, just ‘doing their own thing’ and ‘enjoying the journey’. When I asked Dave about his favourite Slade song, he said “How Does It Feel” resonates with him and feels the lyrics still apply today. Dave feels that when you enjoy what you do, it keeps it fresh. For Dave, he took the time during Covid lockdown to write 3 solo albums. Dave also supports various charitable causes including the Stoke Association, after having a stroke himself during a concert in Nuremburg, and an organisation for buses and transport for SEN. Finally, I asked Dave if he had a message that he wanted to leave for his fans and he wanted to say thank you for all your company and love and support over the years. To remember good music, support live music and come back and see him at one his gigs soon.

SLADE’S chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, “Cum On Feel The Noize” and “Coz I Luv You” are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the Worlds biggest companies. The early nineties saw the bands “Radio Wall Of Sound” hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! HAYSEED DIXIE Rockgrass. There are many copycats, converts, and disciples out there. Accept no imitations.

Hayseed Dixie began one innocent Summer day in 2000 when John Wheeler and Mike Daly drank roughly enough whiskey to float a battleship from the Florida Coast over to Portugal and back and decided to play around in John’s studio. Having spent the previous few years touring around with assorted country hat-acts, John had assembled a proper pile of recording equipment. Thus when he and Mike discovered in their drunken epiphany that the Lost Highway of Reverend Hank Williams and the Highway to Hell of Bishop Bon Scott were indeed the same identical stretch of tarmac, they were well and truly prepared to document this revelation in situ. East Nashville, Tennessee in the Summer of 2000 was a proper Bohemian party place, and a few friends stopped by, drank some of John’s whiskey, and played and sang on this recording here and there, as was the custom of the times. And ten AC/DC songs were suddenly reimagined and recorded forever anew, entirely reinvented as Appalachian Mountain hillbilly rave-ups. Everyone danced (oh how they danced!) around the studio room and out onto the porch and drank more whiskey. (You should have been there. Really. You should have.) Now, functioning well as “Exhibit A” in the demonstration of how one’s beginnings rarely know one’s ends, Hayseed Dixie have evolved into a proper force, one that most people either love, hate, or have never heard of. There isn’t really any middle ground, nor should there be. But fourteen albums - consisting of both original material and reinterpretations of previously rendered songs - and global physical *sales in excess of half a million copies, with over 1,200 live shows in 31 different countries testify: Hayseed Dixie are the undisputed creators of the musical genre,

And now, holding up their own idiosyncratic mirror to an unsettled and unsettling 2017, Hayseed Dixie offer up their 15th studio album, a collection of both original songs and reinterpretations of R&B and Soul classics. Dance with them as they probe the queries: “Why do we still believe there is such a thing as ‘race’?” “Are concepts like ‘nations’ and ‘nationality’ really useful to people who lay bricks or perform kidney stone surgeries?” and “Why does every song always sound better with a banjo in the mix?” The boys are seeking after the root core categorical commonality that runs like an eternal golden braid throughout all of humanity. Then they will buy it a drink! ‘Free Your Mind And Your Grass Will Follow’ is out now on Hayseed Dixie Records. Tickets for the HAYSEED DIXIE – November 2021 – Manchester show are available from: Friday 19th November 2021 MANCHESTER – Academy 2 Box Office No: 0161 832 1111 Website – https://www.manchesteracademy.net/ order/tickets/13356471/hayseed-dixie-manchesteracademy-2-2021-11-19-19-30-00 Doors – 7.30pm / On stage from 8.00pm Tickets - £20.00 advance For further information on HAYSEED DIXIE, check out the following websites / social media links: Website – www.hayseed-dixie.com/ Facebook – www.facebook.com/hayseeddixie Twitter – twitter.com/barleyscotch Instagram- www.instagram.com/hayseed.dixie/

#FOSTER4HULL

You don't need to be a superhero to foster and make a difference Hull | East Riding | North Lincolnshire

Join hundreds of people already fostering with Hull City Council

Eligibility To be able to foster with Hull Fostering you need to:

Hull Fostering are the largest fostering service in the local area with hundreds of fostering households across the sub-region, caring for Hull children and young people and we have many different types of fostering to suit you.

Criteria: • Be over 21 years of age • Live within 30 miles of Hull • Have a spare bedroom solely for a foster child

Fostering or Supported Lodgings involves looking after and supporting a child or young person in your home when they are not able to live with their own family. At the very heart of everything, both our Fostering Team and our Foster Carers aim to provide the safest, most nurturing care possible to children and young people. Being a foster carer or supported lodgings provider is not always easy, as children who need this can have suffered significant trauma, however it is extremely rewarding as you see the progress children can make in your care. If you decide to foster we will help you through each step of your journey towards becoming a foster carer and thereafter.

You can be an existing parent or not have any children currently, work part-time or full time, be unemployed or retired… and still foster a child. Can you provide a child a safe place in a loving home? If you would like to know more about fostering, the fostering process and if it is right for you, then request an information pack today. You will need: • To be over 21 • To have a spare room in your property • Life experience of being independent • To have the time and commitment to support a young person

• •

Do you have a spare room? Could you provide a bridge to independent living for a young person age 16-21?

The Supported Lodgings Service is about providing young people aged 16 – 21 the skills and experience they need to be able to eventually live independently by themselves. Matching you and your lodger We take a great deal of care in matching your lodger with you, and we involve you in the selection process. You yourself have the final say in who shares your home. We have taken time to get to know you and the kind of lodgings you can provide, and take into account your needs and the requirements of the young person. The greatest need in our area is for accommodation to suit young people from 16 – 18, usually coming out of foster care, but placements can be for people up to the age of 24 if the young person is in Higher Education. We recently spoke to Laura and Busilana, who have been providing support lodgings for Hull City Council. Over the years they have supported several young people. They explained how they have been supporting young people who are unaccompanied asylum seekers through, not only their processes, but supporting them being adults, helping them with basic skills such as how to cook and clean, how to budget, create routines, be confident and independent. Laura tells us how "there are some challenges supporting people going through the asylum process, which is very dramatic in itself, and because of the pandemic people are waiting longer for decisions and the young people might have lived through war. We support them with that, but also we're given support from different professionals and projects in the city, that we can refer into, giving the young people someone to talk too." Who can be a Supported Lodgings provider We are looking to recruit suitable supported lodgings providers from the Hull and East Riding area who can provide a safe and supportive environment for young people leaving care or other young people who are unable to live at home. 32
