Emily's Battle with Batten

Facebook

On 20th January 2022 the Atkin family’s hearts were broken when they received the devastating news that their beautiful 10-year-old daughter Emily has a life- limiting condition called Batten Disease. Batten Disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that causes blindness; epilepsy; difficulties sleeping; the decline of speech, language and swallowing skills; and a deterioration of fine and gross motor skills that result in the loss of mobility. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Batten Disease and children suffering from this condition don’t often live longer than their teens. In 2020 Emily started to lose her vision and is now severely visually impaired and on the blind register. Her sight continues to deteriorate, and they don’t know how much longer she will be able to see for. This has been tough for Emily, but not once has she complained, and she still tries to give as many things a go as she can. Her speech is now regressing too, which can be frustrating for her as she has so much, she wants to say but really struggles to get her words out clearly. Emily is the kindest, sweetest, most gentle and loving girl that you could ever meet. She does not have a bad bone in her body and her happy nature can’t help but make you smile. She loves to talk (we literally can’t stop her sometimes) and she keeps everyone laughing every day. Her strength and resilience the last few years make those who know her beyond proud, she doesn’t let this disease get her down and always has a smile on her face. Emily has a lovely relationship with her big brother Lewis and the family are devastated too, for him, that he will have

GoFundMe Page

to watch his little sister get so poorly. Neither of them deserves this to be their childhood. Another thing you should know about Emily is that she LOVES Harry Potter! we’d even go as far as saying she is obsessed! She often asks her family to call her Harry and not Emily and spends most of her time at home in her Gryffindor robes whizzing around on her broomstick. When the family left the hospital in January, they were told to go away and make as many memories as possible with Emily. So that is what they plan on doing. Unfortunately, this disease can progress quickly, so they don’t know how much time Emily has to be able to have new experiences and create those memories. Their aim and ours at HEY Magazine is to raise money in order to carry out her bucket list. The family would love to take her for a meal at the Leaky Cauldron and wand shopping at Ollivanders, to see The Cursed Child on the West End in London, or on a holiday were she can spend carefree hours splashing in the pool. They know these things won’t all be doable, but Emily deserves the world and more and they will try their hardest to give her the best life possible. There are lots of fundraising activities being organised so if you’d like to get involved, please follow Emily’s journey on Facebook, or please scan the QR code and donate. See page 28 for charity ladies fashion show and pop-up show, fundraising for Emily’s battle with Batten.

KINGSTON SHARKS Kingston Sharks & Hull Jets – Season Update: A word from the Chairman, Chris Reader. With many players transitioning from the Learn to Play programme into the junior teams for Kingston Sharks, here’s a quick update of their recent progress in tournaments and as they progress through their Ice Hockey careers. 19th June 2022: Sheffield Tournament Well done to Kingston Sharks under 14s as they attended Sheffield’s tournament. 4 wins and 1 draw they made it to the final. They dug in and worked hard, 2 missed penalty shots and 4 shots that hit the pipes, they lost to Slough in the final. These kids have had an amazing season and this weekend shows how awesome our club is with such talented players. 15th June 2022: Team GB Trials Sharks/Jets players Dec Jones, Alex Kent and Oliver Peers attending the Team GB 20s Trials! Have fun! Sharks/Jets family are proud of you. 5th June 2022: Presentation Night for Kingston Sharks & Hull Jets The presentation night was a great success, following a fantastic season. Well done to all players registered for

18

the 2021/22 season. Thank you to all the players, coaches, managers, off-ice staff, and parents, who were part of the season. Our Sharks/Jets family is one of a kind! 3rd June 2022: Under 14’s representing England Congratulations to under 14’s players, Beau Reader & Charlie Powell, representing England this Jubilee holiday in Dumfries. Also, to Beau for scoring his first goal for England and receiving the man of the match award. Well done boys! 30th May 2022: Official end to the 2021/2022 season. The season has ended apart from the Tournaments, I would like to advise of the achievements of 2021/2022 for Kingston Sharks/Jets. The Journey of the Kingston Sharks / Hull Jets season. Back in March 2020 the Hull Arena Closed for the Global Pandemic and refurbishments, this then re-opened in October 2021, this was nearly 16 months. During this time, we had to train at other rinks to try to keep the club going. Which I am so thankful to Planet Ice and Grimsby for their help and support. Our club lost over 50 members due to Covid, the rink closure or departing to other clubs. Back in August 2021, we still did not think we had enough players to get our club going. We organised trials for the Senior Team, and the player turnout was great, we kept that going until we returned to our home rink on the 1st October. On the first

day of training, back in our rink, players returned, and the rink was not completely finished but the hard work and rapport we had created with the Hull Council they allowed us to train. This leads me on to the Season and what a season it has been for everyone! Most of our teams commenced their games in November but our Sharks 18s had their First two league games on the 10th and 16th of Oct. The first of which was away to Sheffield, the team walked away with the first victory of the season, shortly followed by an away win to Telford. The platform was built on Hulls player talent for our season success. The BUY IN: Firstly, we have a Strong Sharks/Jets committee, which involves five members: Chris Reader, Ashley Corbett, Jenny Hulks, Mel Marsh and Emma Goss . Secondly, to our great Sharks parents, thank you for all your support and buy-in you have shown, for all the miles you have travelled and weekends you have given up keeping our club going so successfully. SHARKS PLAYERS, you are a credit to us, and we are going to get stronger together. SHARKS Coaches/Managers – I have said for ages we have the best people in Hull. The players are lucky to have you as leaders and role models. We have a small club but look at what we have achieved! Sharks U10s – Gowan Bedddoes, Scott Hayward, Matt Smith, Rob Bratton, Chris Hogarth, Ian Kerman Manager Adele Bonner, and the full team has passion and loads of energy, and a great future ahead. Sharks U12s –Gowan Bedddoes, Scott Hayward, Matt Smith, Rob Bratton, Joe Bradley, Ian Kerman Manager Jenny Paddison, same as our U10s team, there are lots of talent, great leadership by coaches and managers: Ash Corbett, Chris Reader, Matt Smith, Manager Jenny Hulks. 2nd place finish for a very young side who have progressed together, worked hard, and produced great results

Hull Jets - Mike Roddy, Phil Kent, Manager Sam Daintith. – Cup and Play Off winners. Mike Roddy coached the team and had total buy in by all players. The players and coaches were relentless in everything they did which produced success. Jets Off-ice staff – there is so many of you great people. Thank you for making the games run so smooth, without you all, our season would not have happened. Jets supporters – thank you for getting behind us all season, the Jets product has become massive. Home fixtures the noise was unbelievable, and the players fed off your energy. I hope that we will see you all again next season and we can carry on our success together. You are all part of the Jets family. Extra Skills Sessions - Jeff Colton & Sam Colton thank you for providing your skills and advising your power skating education. Dave Clancy - thank you for your goalie coaching and delivery to all our netminders. Andy Bruton, Melanie Bruton, Phil Kent, Jo Kent, Chris Reader, Ash Corbett, Mike Roddy, Carol Neylon, Mark Saunders, Gary Apsley, Ben Pitchley, Martin Peters, I am sure I will have missed someone, and I apologise for this. To my lovely wife Sam and my mate Ethan. The saying “behind a man there is good women” – I have a great family. Sam and Ethan, you have been my rock and your love and support has been unreal. A special thank you goes to these people for listening to my long rants and keeping me in check throughout this journey, words cannot express. We are all looking forward to season 2022/23 Chris Reader (Chairman)

Sharks U16s – Scott Hayward, Chris Reader, Karl Hopper, Manager Mel Bruton 2nd place finish – and attended national finals. This team achieved something that we believed they were capable of, then went to nationals and showed everyone that they deserved to be there. Sharks U18s –Mike Fletcher, Jo Kent, Phil Kent, Phil & Carol Smith, Manager Sam Daintith. League winners – and attended national finals. All players understood their level and were relentless in their game play. Best 18s team from start to finish.

Children’s Charity looking for Business Sponsors Aim Higher, a Hull & East Yorkshire charity for children and young people with autism, and their families, is getting a head start on the Party Season with an early callout for businesses to sponsor their 6th annual Charity Ball. Aim Higher was set up in 2016 to empower families facing Autism, mental health and educational barriers for their children, and the whole family that can be affected. The founder members and trustees of the charity all have first-hand experience of the impact of these barriers, including lost learning and work opportunities, anxiety, depression & exhaustion, when it all can get to feel too much to cope with. By providing activities for children and families to engage with, and sharing information, hints, and tips, Aim Higher helps to spread the load for families, so that they feel less alone in what they are dealing with. One of Aim Highers families Kelly said “I don’t think you can actually put into to words what Aim Higher do for our family and other families…They are truly amazing, Aim Higher is they only charity that has been on our full SEN journey. They have given our family support and access to lots of fun things (Lacey’s words) which we would not normally be able to do. We have made lots of memories. The best part for us is Kane, is nearly 16 and can still access activities such as Little Monkeys, where he can be independent and make new friendships.” “Autism can be a difficult condition to explain to people who don’t have first-hand experience of it. Our children don’t necessarily have any visible disability, but what they all have in common is difficulty communicating and processing lots of sensory information - noise, lights, movement & people. That can mean that, sometimes, all the public sees is what looks like bad behaviour - that is not necessarily very appealing when we are looking for public support, and it can be very exhausting for family members.

22

As well as securing funding for our year-round activities, our Anniversary Charity Ball gives everyone a real break, and a chance to let our hair down and enjoy a good night out, at a proper event that feels really special. We’re hoping that some new business sponsors will join us this year and are already looking forward to meeting you.” The Charity Ball will take place at the MKM Stadium on Walton Street on Saturday 24th September, and features a three-course meal with table service, a complimentary welcome drink, raffle & Grand Charity Auction, and a live band playing danceable music from all the eras! The founders Gill Jagger and Nicola Robinson said “It’s always a great night out, and this year, we’re really getting our party plans out there early, because we know that, after lockdown, everyone’s going to want to be out socialising as much as they can. We’re even expecting some companies to make this their Christmas night out, even though it’s only in September - places get booked up, so it starts earlier every year! We’re really impressed with the band that are playing for us this year, they’re a professional covers band called “Turn Up The Sun”. We always fill the dance floor as soon as the plates have been cleared, and this year will be no different.” Businesses can buy a whole table, for 10 members of staff and guests, for £350, and guarantee them a night to remember! HEY MAGAZINE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE RETURN OF AN NIHL ICE HOCKEY TEAM. As our readers know, we are Ice Hockey fans and as a family, we spend 5 days a week at Hull Arena. We’ve truly enjoyed watching Home and Away games with Hull Jets, and will continue to do so, but we are excited to announce the return to NIHL Ice Hockey. Hull has a long history of Ice Hockey in the City and having travelled to many away matches, we have a huge sense of pride in Hull Arena, it really is one of the best. Pre-season games have been confirmed, and are likely to be the opening fixtures of the Seahawks inaugural season. The Seahawks play their very first game in Leeds on 03/09/2022 and the following evening on 04/09/2022, we entertain Sheffield Steeldogs back at the Hull Arena. We play Leeds at home on 10/09/2022 and to finish on 11/09/2022 we play away to Sheffield to conclude the pre-season tournament. Leeds Knights v Hull Seahawks – Saturday 3rd September (Face-off TBC) Hull Seahawks v Sheffield Steeldogs – Sunday 4th September (Face-off TBC) Hull Seahawks v Leeds Knights – Saturday 10th September (Face-off TBC) Sheffield Steeldogs v Hull Seahawks – Sunday 11th September (Face-off TBC) Ian Mowforth, Hull Seahawks GM Commercial, believes that these will be sell out matches. ‘Support for the new Seahawks has been truly overwhelming and we cannot wait for the first game. It will be a historic night given we have had to wait 29 years for the return of our beloved Seahawks.’

Seahawks much earlier than expected. Matty Davies added ‘The season starts quite late so we had looked at various challenge games but wanted something with greater purpose. Make no mistake, these might be preseason matches but friendlies? I have never known a game against Sheffield Steeldogs ever to be called that. In my view there is no such thing as a friendly against any Yorkshire team, especially when bragging rights are at stake.’ Ian concluded ‘I also believe that the opening game will be exciting as it is nostalgic and moving. The interest is so high that we are having to consider making it an all-ticket event given the likely demand. The games are additional to those on the season pass, so all supporters should try to book online or enrol for the Hull Culture and Leisure member’s card, which allows them to access the online booking system, store their details and even book several games at once. If there are any tickets available on the night, we can sell these over the counter but to avoid disappointment I would recommend supporters try one of the online methods first.’ The 2x challenge games are now on the pass making the family passes and entry prices the cheapest in the league. The booking system can be accessed via the link on our website under https://hullseahawks.co.uk/ store#online-store

social inclusion activities, accessing the appropriate benefits, registration with GPs and dentists, and supporting with referrals to relevant services such as counselling, domestic abuse support, mental health and substance misuse services. The end goal is to move them on, into independent accommodation, enabling people to have brighter futures.

Who are Humbercare? Humbercare are a local voluntary organisation and registered charity, established in 1989 we have delivered local services for local people for the last 33 years. Over the years our services have been designed in partnership and commissioned by the Humberside Probation Service and by Local Authorities across the four Humber sub regions. We also deliver services funded by the Humber NHS Teaching Trust and receive grant monies from various charitable organisations. The focus of our work is supporting vulnerable adults and young people to achieve independent living with the core focus of working with those that have offended, are at risk of offending or those facing multiple disadvantages such as homelessness, mental health issues, adverse trauma or general barriers to community living. What do we do? Humbercare is breaking down barriers that socially excluded individuals face when accessing housing and support services. Enabling an opportunity for all individuals to realise and develop their own potential. We deliver a number of services ranging from low level advice and guidance provision through to high level complex care and support that is regulated by the Care Quality Commission. We work under the umbrella of a registered Social Landlord delivering a large housing portfolio across Hull, East Riding and North East Lincolnshire. Through which we provide low level supported accommodation, for those individuals that present as homeless, are leaving care, are being discharged from hospital or prison without an address or have experienced tenancy or family/ relationship breakdowns and need accommodation and a little support and guidance to learn how to manage a tenancy and a home, gain some stability in their lives and integrate into local communities utiltising the many local statutory and voluntary services available to them for additional support. Through weekly visits by our team of housing officers we can help people to get on track, access the services they need, learn and develop independent living skills, learn how to manage a tenancy and eventually work towards moving on to long term accommodation without the need for support. Humbercare delivers the local Westbourne House Housing Related Support Service, commissioned by the local authority to provide accommodation and support to those that the local authority identify and refer to us as homeless or rough sleeping. The service exists to support people from the streets, providing a roof over their head whilst delivering person centred support packages addressing personal issues that may have led to their homelessness. Support provision can include basic hygiene and nutrition support,

The many other services we deliver, which can all be found on our website, all focus on care and support to individuals within their own homes, be this a home provided by Humbercare or any other accommodation provider including their own home. The support can be from a minimal one hour per week ranging to 24-hour live-in support by our staff team, all delivered in accordance with commissioned contract specifications and service users’ needs and wishes. Support as above is advice, guidance, care and support packages tailored to the individual to support them to secure, maintain and then sustain independent living, moving on from our services at a time that is appropriate to them, when they are ready to live independently without support. Who are our staff team? We currently have a team of around 150 staff with an age range of 18 to 70. We are a diverse employer inclusive of a fair proportion of mixed gender and currently employ 24% of the staff team that are considered to have a registered disability. We offer permanent contracts in the main but also provide secondment opportunities, temporary contracts, zero hours contracts as per the wishes of the applicant and needs of a service. Our staff retention is positive with high numbers of the staff team having long lengths of service, for example our managers team, many of whom have progressed through from support worker positions, the majority have 10 years and more as length of service. Our team comes to us through many routes, some have lived experience and some are fresh out of college or university following completion of Criminology, Psychology or Health and Social Care or Social Work courses. So why join us? Many of the roles at Humbercare do not require a qualification or specific working experience as we offer on the job training and extensive training packages. We look for common sense, compassion, commitment to our cause and the desire to make a difference to people’s lives. Many staff utilise our opportunities as a stepping stone to gain valuable experience of the sector and have successfully moved on to secure careers in Police, Probation Service and Social Work departments. The roles we hold include receptionists, cleaners, caretakers, finance assistants, administration assistants, housing officers, support workers, care workers, team leaders, senior officers, managers through to senior management team roles. We are always seeking new members to join our team, bringing in new ideas, new ways of working, valued experience and skills. If you like the sound of the work we do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
