There tends to be so much negativity, doom and gloom in the mainstream news and media at the moment and, despite the fact that we cannot ignore current circumstances in the world, that’s not where we want to be as a publication. We are trying to be realistic, yet supportive and positive in the articles and messages we deliver through our magazine for Hull & East Yorkshire.

IGNISIA

The third part of the trilogy: INVICTO, sees a heartbroken Flavius led into greater danger when he has to return to Rome to solve the mystery of his father’s death and faces the greatest challenge of his life at the hands of the new Emperor, Caligula. Betrayal, brutality and the realisation of who his true friends are pave the way for a new life.

The session is offered on a Sunday morning between the hours of 9-10am, prices can be found on the Hull City Council website, and for the same price, you also get the skating session 10-12 for free of charge to work on your skating abilities. This isn’t covered by the Kingston Sharks Coach or Manager.

The Hull Ice Arena are working in conjunction with the Kingston Junior Ice Hockey Club (Also known as the Kingston Sharks and Jets) to offer the chance to become an Ice Hockey player of the future. The session is run by the Hull City Council, and the Kingston Sharks provide professional and fully certified coaches and managers to demonstrate and plan the training sessions to instruct the very highest standard of coaching for every child who would like to become an ice hockey player. The Kingston Sharks provide all protective equipment needed for the training session for no extra cost. If possible, if your child could have basic skating ability, this would be helpful as we’d recommend a few skating sessions so the player would be steady on their feet before trying Ice Hockey.

Competition WIN Family Ticket for 4 for 18th December 2021 HULL JETS Match To enter this competition, please email competitions@heymagazine.co.uk Including your name, full address & phone number.

The Coaches and managers try and make this session fun but also challenging, this provides the player an opportunity to advance into different areas of Ice hockey. Once the player has reached a relatively good standard, the Head coach off the Kingston Sharks and Jets, Andy Daintith, will invite the chosen players to trial for the Kingston Sharks to be offered a place into the main team training. Sessions run on a Monday and Wednesday evening, but this would only be offered when the coaches feel the player is ready.

WIN Family Ticket for 4 for 29th January 2022 HULL JETS Match

Over the years, the Sharks have had lots of success with Ice hockey in the city with players now playing for Great Britain, England, Conference, and our very own club,

THE ACTIVE+ SPORTS TEAM ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE TWO AMAZING NEW FOOTBALL COACHING SESSIONS, STARTING SATURDAY 8TH JANUARY 2022. Active+ (formerly the Hull Indoor Sports Centre) have been successfully delivering Junior Football Coaching for almost 20-years!

Dedicated Goalkeeper Training Sessions

Junior Football Training Sessions

Goalkeepers play a vital role, ultimately as the last line of defence for their football team. Often, the pressure and stress of a goalkeeper is not truly realised or appreciated, especially with younger, junior players, in grassroots football.

Our NEW junior football coaching course is perfect for new and existing players alike, underpinned by England DNA philosophy, and is designed to complement any current football team training sessions.

Grassroots football coaches do an amazing job however, with many players in a team, it can be very difficult to give goalkeepers the specific goalkeeper training they require and deserve.

Most importantly, every player will have FUN, with a ball at their feet, and lots of touches of the ball, for almost all the training session apart from short, small-sized games at the end of the session.

Our NEW goalkeeper training is the essential training package for new and experienced, junior goalkeepers alike. This course is a carefully designed, structured training programme that follows the principles of the FA England DNA philosophy.

From the side-lines, our training sessions will seem noisy, chaotic and may not look pretty but, this reflects real-world football that can be chaotic, noisy, with lots happening all of the time. We believe that our sessions should reflect this instead of training sessions with queues of children waiting for their turn at a drill.

1-hour dedicated goalkeeper training sessions run over 8-weeks, every Saturday, 1pm to 2pm, including all the crucial elements of goalkeeping: • • • • • • • •

Handling Footwork An introduction to Diving Distribution – hands & feet High Balls & Crosses Diving with confidence Reaction Saves Reaction & Recovery

These goalkeeper training sessions are perfect for new or existing goalkeepers, helping learn and develop new skills, build confidence, and take what they’ve learnt back for the benefit of their football team. Players will also be provided with takeaway notes from each session so they have a record of what they’ve learnt, and this can be shared with their team coaches and parents/guardians. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to enhance your child’s goalkeeping skills whilst developing invaluable life skills such as building confidence, composure, organisation, leadership, and communication.

GOALKEEPER TRAINING FROM £6.25 PER SESSION

We’ll ensure that each player has as many touches of a football in a challenging environment as possible because this will improve the players ability, in addition to fitness and confidence, and we’ve seen this first-hand. 1-hour dedicated training sessions run over 12-weeks, every Saturday 10am to 11am and every Tuesday 5pm to 6pm. These new football training sessions are perfect for new or existing players, to help them learn and develop new skills, build confidence, improve fitness levels and take what they’ve learnt back into their football team training sessions and matches. Players will also be provided with takeaway notes from each session so they have a record of what they’ve learnt, and this can be shared with their team coaches and parents/guardians alike. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to enhance your child’s football skills whilst developing invaluable life skills such as building confidence, composure, organisation, leadership, and communication.

Suicide: Why we must continue to work together to save lives Suicidal feelings can affect anyone, of any age, gender or background, at any time, although research shows that men and people from LGBTIQ+ communities are more at risk of taking their own life. The Humber Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership continue to work in collaboration with their communities, to train the public, reduce the stigma around suicide and remain innovative. #TalkSuicide is the suicide prevention campaign ran by the Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership. One of the ways that they tackle stigma and raise awareness is by going out into their communities to offer training to the public. Even throughout a global pandemic, the training has been accessed regularly and thanks to extensive promotion in all areas of HCV via partner organisations, the number of people completing the training has continued to rise. Since January 2020, over 13,500 have taken the training and are now better equipped to: • SEE - Identify the signs of when someone might be suffering from suicidal thoughts • SAY - Feel comfortable speaking out about suicide in a supportive manner. • SIGNPOST - Signpost anyone suffering to the correct services and support Men Middle-aged men are more likely to die by suicide than any other age group, in fact, suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 45-49. It's not clear why more men than women take their own lives. But if you identify as a man, you may: • Feel pressured to 'get on with things' and keep your thoughts and feelings to yourself • Choose suicide methods that have a lower chance of survival • Believe you can cope without help, or feel you have to cope without help • Worry that you will appear weak if you talk about your feelings or seek support. Whilst it may seem weak for a man to come forward to get help, it is important to remember that everyone deserves support, and there are services such as Andy’s Man Club who can help.

People from LGBTIQ+ communities Being LGBTIQ+ doesn’t cause suicidal thoughts and feelings, but some things LGBTIQ+ people go through can affect their mental health, such as discrimination, homophobia or transphobia, social isolation, rejection, and difficult experiences of coming out. It’s important to note that embracing being LGBTIQ+ can have a positive impact on someone’s wellbeing too. It might mean they have more confidence, a sense of belonging to a community, feelings of relief and self-acceptance, and better relationships with friends and family.

A recent study by Stonewall found that over the previous year: • Half of LGBTIQ+ people had experienced depression and three in five had experienced anxiety • One in eight LGBTIQ+ people aged 18-24 had attempted to end their life • Almost half of trans people had thought about taking their life. Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership • Despite Covid-19, partners across Humber, Coast and Vale have continued to deliver new services to prevent suicides, and there has never been a more crucial time to have a conversation around suicide prevention. Working closely with partners such as Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, First Ladies club, The Bearded Fisherman, Andy’s Man Club, The Humber Bridge Board and local emergency services, new services have been commissioned and lives have been saved. Whilst a lot of work is still to do, it is important to note that in the 2020 Office of National Statistics (ONS) report, agestandardised mortality rate (ASMR) in Yorkshire and The Humber decreased significantly compared with 2019. This was one of the only significant changes in English regions, when comparing 2020 with 2019. Training can be accessed via www.talksuicide.co.uk and businesses are also encouraged to support the campaign by requesting a FREE business resource pack. The pack contains helpful resources that will support a business to roll out the free training to their workforce. Jo Kent Suicide Prevention Programme Lead

What’s On Hull, East Yorkshire and beyond...

KIEFER SUTHERLAND The album was produced and mixed by the multiple Grammy Award winner Chris Lord-Alge (Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood), and recorded at MIX LA Studios in Los Angeles.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND ANNOUNCES MONTHLONG UK TOUR FOR JANUARY 2022 NEW ALBUM ‘BLOOR STREET’ TO BE RELEASED ON JANUARY 21ST From ‘Lost Boys’ and ‘Stand By Me’ to ‘24’, everyone knows about Kiefer Sutherland’s phenomenally successful acting career. Yet in recent years, he has focused on applying his masterful storytelling ability to music, with two acclaimed albums spanning a spectrum of country and Americana. His second album, 2019’s ‘Reckless & Me’, proved to be particularly popular in the UK. It debuted at #9 on the Official Albums Chart, and went straight to #1 on the Americana, Country and Independent album charts. It eventually became the UK’s second biggest selling country album of the year. Now Kiefer Sutherland is set to release his third album ‘Bloor Street’ on January 21st via a new deal with Cooking Vinyl. The album is launched alongside the announcement of an extensive UK and European headline tour that commences in January 2022. Kiefer Sutherland commented, “Writing and recording this album was a unique experience given the pandemic and subsequent restrictions that followed. I found myself, like so many, with a block of time that I had never been afforded before, which allowed me to not only reflect upon my life but also to write about it.

Kiefer Sutherland will return to these shores in January with his full live band to embark upon his biggest UK and Ireland headline tour to date. He will then take the tour into Europe with dates in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The Guardian’s live review stated, “The action star’s whiskey-sodden country music set is genuinely poignant.” UK and European tickets went on general sale at 9am on Friday, 24th September. The first 100 people to buy a ticket for each show will also gain priority admission on the night. A range of limited edition signed ‘Bloor Street’ bundles are available to pre-order, while formats include CD, black vinyl, a limited edition transparent orange vinyl, and an orange cassette. In addition to his music career, Kiefer Sutherland will be returning to our screens soon. He features alongside Chris Pine and Ben Foster in the film ‘Violence of Action’, and will play Franklin D. Roosevelt in the limited series ‘The First Lady’. Music, whether touring or recording, has always been a personal extension of storytelling for me. I couldn’t be more excited to share these new songs and, hopefully sooner than later, play them for audiences around the world.”

HEY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH… DAVE HILL OF SLADE As we approach Christmas, there are a few songs that immediately come to mind, one of which involves the lead singer shouting the lyrics “IT’S CHRISTMAS’, part way through. Of course, I’m talking about “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade. You can imagine my reaction when I was presented with the opportunity for an exclusive, one-to-one chat with Dave Hill, the remaining founding member of Slade, and what a nice chap he is! He has plenty of stories to tell from his successful 6-decade career, with the unique blend of pop, rock ‘n’ roll, outrageous flamboyance, memorable hairstyles, plenty of energy and pure fun, with no less than 23 singles of which 6 were No.1 smash hits plus, 6 smash albums. Many of these tracks seem timeless, still being included today, especially in TV commercials for some of the world’s biggest companies. Tracks such as “Cum On Feel The Noise”, “Coz I Luv You”, “Far Far Away” and of course “Merry Xmas Everybody”. I asked Dave how he got started... Dave explained that he was 13-years old and at senior school in Wolverhampton. His early influences were Elvis, Buddy Holly, The 4 Tops, Little Richard, and The Beatles. He couldn’t get into the music class; he couldn’t read music. He loved music and felt this compelling desire to play music but also felt different, like he had something in him. So, for his Christmas present that year, he picked out a guitar from the ‘Kays Catalogue’. His dad said he wouldn’t spend too much money on a guitar and paid £7.50. Then came Dave’s next challenge... you could only buy right-handed guitars, and Dave was left-handed. He tried playing it upside down for a while until he started guitar lessons with his science teacher at school who told Dave that, despite being left-handed, he needed to play a right-handed guitar. After leaving school, Dave played in a band, ‘The Vendors’ with pal and drummer, Don Powell. Dave worked at Tarmac Limited for two years before starting ‘the best part of his life – being in a group’. Dave desperately wanted to do this, it felt like the ‘right thing’ to do so faced an ultimatum, stay with his job, or start a band. And, with the backing of his dads’ supportive words “give it a go”, Dave took the plunge. Dave formed a band called ‘The Young Ones’ with some school friends. Then, Slade was formed in 1966 with Dave Hill, Jimmy Lea (Bass Player), Don Powell (Drummer) and Noddy Hill (singer), joining forces with former Animal’s bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience Manager, Chas Chandler. When I asked Dave about his influences and what Slade set out to do at the start, Dave explained that they had always set out to just ‘be themselves’ which, for Slade, meant being ‘different’, following their passion. They didn’t want to ‘fit-in’ or even try to ‘blend-in’. Yes, in the early days, they had skinhead haircuts for a short while, but their image started to form as they developed this music style very much like the ‘loud and funny music from America’ which many started to describe as ‘Glam Rock’. Dave recalls the origin for the style of Slade been ‘colour, being alive and magic’. The grew their hair over their ears with unique cuts. When dressing for one of his first gigs, he wore a women’s blouse made of satin silk. Some didn’t think he’d get away with it but because it was shiny and glimmered on stage, the crowd loved

16

www.heymagazine.co.uk | December 2021 & January 2022

it. They liked the ‘shiny stuff ’. So, Dave then had trousers made too. One day, whilst in Kensington Market in London, Dave came across a guy selling platform shoes and Dave thought these were cool but, to be super cool, he asked him to add an extra 3-inches to them. The coat then followed… Dave chuckles as he reminisces about hanging up a long dark coat in his parents’ council house, taking a can of silver car spray paint (because this was a new colour for cars at the time) and transforming this coat into a long, shiny jacket. It wasn’t until he moved the coat that he realised he hadn’t put any paper up, that’s when he noticed the silver spray paint around the door and walls with shape of the long coat in the middle. When colour TV became available from 1969, Dave recalls colour “exploding out of the screen” when they appeared on Top Of The Pops, with glitter in his hair, and this had a big impact on their records and their popularity. Slade achieved their first chart hit in 1971 with a Bobby Marchan song “Get Down And Get With It”, then “Coz I Luv You” was released in the same year and was the band’s first No.1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe’s biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan, and other parts of the world. Dave remembers “Cum On Fell The Noize” releasing on a Thursday night in February 1973 when Slade would go straight in at No.1 (becoming the first to do this since The Beatles “Get Back” in 1969) and knock Rod Stewart from the top of the charts. The band had their 6th and final No.1 hit in the UK with “Merry Xmas Everybody” earning the UK Christmas No.1 slot in December 1973. Accompanying the look was the originality of the music playing itself. With such compelling drive and passion to be a musician, Dave created a unique playing style including the ‘Dave Hill Wobble’. A unique sound that is closely compared to the likes of the bending notes played by ‘The Shadows’ and ‘The Beatles’. There is also the unique ‘Super Yob’ guitar that was later made famous by Dave too. Of course, there are also the unique song titles that have their own spellings such as “Take Me Bak ‘Ome” and “Mama We’er All Crazee Now”. Dave attributes their successful careers to the ‘enjoyment of doing it’ and ‘not trying to work out the ending’, just ‘doing their own thing’ and ‘enjoying the journey’. When I asked Dave about his favourite Slade song, he said “How Does It Feel” resonates with him and feels the lyrics still apply today. Dave feels that when you enjoy what you do, it keeps it fresh. For Dave, he took the time during Covid lockdown to write 3 solo albums. Dave also supports various charitable causes including the Stroke Association, after having a stroke himself during a concert in Nuremburg, and an organisation for buses and transport for SEN. Finally, I asked Dave if he had a message that he wanted to leave for his fans and he wanted to say thank you for all your company and love and support over the years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock’n’roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits...plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. SLADE’S chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, “Cum On Feel The Noize” and “Coz I Luv You” are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the Worlds biggest companies. The early nineties saw the bands “Radio Wall Of Sound” hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia. SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK “Merry Christmas Everybody” tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France. Having just returned from a festival in Gibraltar, next stop is Greenland and Faroe Islands. Now, led by founder member Dave Hill on Lead Guitar

Slade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated rock’n’roll. HEY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH… DAVE HEMINGWAY OF SUNBIRDS Having grown-up with an eclectic music taste, there was always something special about listening to great bands and artists from our local area of Hull & East Riding, and there are a couple that stand out. Especially, the former members of The Housemartins and The Beautiful South. I was so pleased to be asked to chat with Dave Hemingway as he starts his ‘new chapter’ with his new band, Sunbirds, with new songs and a totally new sound. Sunbirds is made up of Dave Hemingway, songwriter & guitarist Phil Barton, violinist & singer, Laura Wilcockson, and session drummer Marc Parnell. They are currently playing their live gigs and have released their album, ‘Cool To Be Kind’ in 2020. The sound from Sunbirds is different to the music we’ve heard from Dave previously. Dave explains how their music has an ‘American roots feel to it’ and you can feel Phil Barton’s love and influence of American country music coming through in their tracks with the delicate use of pedal steel guitars, banjos, and mandolins in some of their tracks and harder, grungy guitar solos in others. Dave explains how the band are ‘very proud of what they’ve achieved’ and songs are written about some of their own experiences. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ is a ‘true album, written as an album as opposed to a collection of songs or singles that were chosen to be on it’. I asked Dave when he first realised that he wanted to pursue music and he explained that he was 6-years old, and it was his brother’s birthday party. Dave was asked to be the DJ for the party, taking care of the music, he picked up a record by The Beatles, ‘She’s Leaving Home’ from ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ when he was struck with this feeling he’d never had before and knew he wanted to be in music. Dave and his school friend Hugh Whitaker, both shared an interest in drumming at school, and when the classed were asked who would like to learn, they put their hands up. They both went on to play for bands after school, first the Newpolitans with Dave Rotheray on bass, and then the Velvetones. Whilst at university in London, Hemingway was the drummer and a founding member of The Shoppers. Hugh Whitaker was drumming for the Housemartins. In 1987, Dave was working as a purchase ledger clerk for Crystal Motor Group when he got a call from Rotheray telling him Whitaker had left The Housemartins. Dave quit his job in March 1987 and quickly found himself recording in the studio for The Housemartins second album, ‘The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death’. The result of Dave’s experience throughout his career combined with his recognisable mellow and melodical vocal tones, their new album is pleasure to listen to. I asked Dave what his favourite track on the album is and he talked about

18

how ‘Stars Still Shine’ resonates with a ‘personal vibe’ with him. The Sunbirds album is available to buy on CD or listen on popular music streaming platforms, you can find links to all of these from their website www.sunbirds.co.uk or http://smarturl.it/p6n3s7 Post-covid, Sunbirds are in the rehearsal rooms, putting the work in to ‘get good and deliver strong songs’ and are ready to ‘get back out there’ on the road, playing their gigs and working on a ‘proper tour’. You can find more about their upcoming gig dates in HEY Magazine and on their website. To finish our call, I asked Dave, if we looked at the last 3 tracks from his personal playlist, what was he listening to and he replied, ‘probably a collection of tracks by Squeeze’. Finally, I asked Dave what message he’d like to give for fans, past, future, and present, about the Sunbirds, and he replied that they are loving what they are doing and ‘write to play’. He said, ‘this is something new but give us a try’, it’s a ‘new chapter for them’ and they ‘love playing local’ having played iconic local venues such as The Adelphi, where they played their first gig on Saturday 31st July 2021. Sunbirds can’t wait to see you at one of their gigs soon.

THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH’S CO-FOUNDER DAVE HEMINGWAY’S NEW BAND SUNBIRDS we want whether it’s about love, longing, depression or Gary Lineker’s crisp adverts”. Sunbirds ‘Cool To Be Kind’ debut album is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon UK & Music and available in all HMV stores as well as via the website www.sunbirds.co.uk Sunbirds are: Dave Hemingway – Vocals Phil Barton – Guitar Laura Wilcockson – Vocals & Violin Marc Parnell – Drums

The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS. Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/ violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound. Although born and bred in England, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80’s/early 90’s. However, you can only sing about what you know. “Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.” Their debut album produced by cult producer Teo Miller, captures truthful, open-hearted, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary themes as well as ageold matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. “Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves”, says Phil “having said that, there’s no exact science here, we’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever

Steve Harley celebrates his 48th year in music in 2021 and continues to play concerts around the world. He says that playing live is more than a job, it’s almost his life’s blood. Considered one of the most charismatic live performers at work today, the original Cockney Rebel tours with a full 6-piece rock band and also fronts the Steve Harley Acoustic Band. Music is very much still his first love. “We see the world and play to great audiences; how good is that! I see great cities and their galleries and museums in our downtime, beautiful landscapes from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean coast, all in my life as a touring musician. It’s still the greatest job on earth!” Harley said recently. The Live shows include the big hit singles, like Judy Teen, Mr Soft, Love’s A Prima Donna, the legendary Sebastian, as well as the evergreen Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me). That song is noted by PRS as one of the most-played songs in history on British Radio.

Seriously” – Daily Mail reporter.

HEY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH… STEVE HARLEY OF STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL I was genuinely excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to spend time in an exclusive, one-to-one chat with no other than Steve Harley, of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and he was an absolute pleasure to talk to. I grew up listening to their iconic tracks such as Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me).

like all of us, he felt the impact of Covid and was keen to be able to start to go back out into the world, albeit tentatively and as safely as possible. For Steve, this meant reaching the point where he could visit Rockwell Studios on a 2-week residential visit for him and his fellow musicians to be able to record his new album, ‘Uncovered’.

Albeit, our chat was over a telephone call, he is such a nice, genuine person, it felt like a real fireside chat between friends. We talked about his career to date, his tour, his new album and his love for Yorkshire and the friendly Yorkshire Folk, and he is known to describe the people of Hull as “super, super people”.

‘Uncovered’ is an album that includes 2 of his own tracks and 9 tracks that are ‘interpretations’ as Steve calls them. The album also includes a new, original track from Steve called ‘I’ve just seen a face’ which has a real folk and country feel. The other 9 tracks are an opportunity for Steve and his talented band of musicians to recreate tracks originally by the likes of David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Hot Chocolate and Longpigs: in their own unique way.

And he really means it. Steve is probably more active in the Hull & East Yorkshire region than many of us realise. Firstly, Steve is a trustee of the Mick Ronson Music Foundation along with Mick’s daughter, Lisa Ronson, and John Bird. Steve and Mick were good friends. Mick Ronson was a superstar, a legend, and a Hull lad, working with the likes of David Bowie, but Mick sadly passed away from liver cancer in 1993. Steve played a tribute concert for Mick in 2016 resulting in a memorial being placed in Queens Gardens. The Mick Ronson Music Foundation is a charity setup to benefit and promote the education of young people within music for Hull and surrounding areas. We’ll be learning more about the Mick Ronson Music Foundation in a future issue of HEY Magazine. Also, Steve recently performed at various Yorkshire venues, one of which was his gig at the Bridlington Spa where he donated tickets to members of the Bridlington Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Steve explained that whenever he performs gigs in a coastal location, he always donates free tickets to volunteers the local RNLI station as a token of thanks and appreciation for the invaluable work they undertake, putting their own lives at risk to save the lives of others at sea. Steve explained where this came from, talking about how he looked up to his dad throughout his life, Steve’s dad is his hero and a great volunteer and, if they could, his dad would have been a volunteer for the RNLI and it’s something that Steve wanted to do too, but unfortunately, he was unable to due to having Polio as a child. So, Steve tries to help where and when he can, and this is in addition to other charitable work Steve undertakes despite his very busy schedule touring, gigging, recording and of course, spending some very well needed, and deserved, downtime with his wife, Dorothy. Building on a hugely successful career, spanning nearly 50-years, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel have released 5 albums and had 12 singles in the UK singles charts. Steve explained that professional musicians like himself have been on the same journey as many of us, Covid doesn’t favour nor discriminate based on our jobs, success, status, or wealth, and

In part, this is achieved by the recording itself. Steve is incredibly proud of this acoustic album that was recorded with a great sound engineer but absolutely no EQ. Steve explained that there’s no engineering involved by means of digital manipulation or trickery. It is a genuine, authentic, and true sound. Steve describes the album as having a ‘roots feel’ going on to explain that the sound recorded on the album is ‘natural and real’, produced by talented musicians playing ‘organic’ string instruments. Steve loves piano but pianos and keyboards have no place on this album, string instruments and vocals only. What you hear when you listen to the album is exactly what they played and how they played it, and it sounds amazing! You simply must listen to this album. The track ‘Star of Belle Isle’ includes vocals by Eddi Reader. ‘Uncovered’ is available to buy from Steve’s website on vinyl LP or CD and can be signed by Steve himself at no additional charge – www.steveharley.com/shop/music-and-video/cdsand-dvds.html or listen on Spotify. Steve added that his focus right now is on his upcoming winter tour dates and gigs, commenting how he and his fellow musicians are always left astonished by the beauty of our Yorkshire region whilst they travel around on their tours and will often wander from the main routes and opt for routes ‘back and beyond’ to take in the sights of our amazing county. Finally, I asked Steve if he had a message that he wanted to leave for his fans and he asked that we all ‘keep the faith’, be ‘totally honest’ and stay true to ourselves, ‘keep believing’ and wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ for all the love and support he’s had over the years.

At the very heart of everything, both our Fostering Team and our Foster Carers aim to provide the safest, most nurturing care possible to children and young people. Being a foster carer or supported lodgings provider is not always easy, as children who need this can have suffered significant trauma, however it is extremely rewarding as you see the progress children can make in your care. If you decide to foster we will help you through each step of your journey towards becoming a foster carer and thereafter.

You can be an existing parent or not have any children currently, work part-time or full time, be unemployed or retired… and still foster a child. Can you provide a child a safe place in a loving home? If you would like to know more about fostering, the fostering process and if it is right for you, then request an information pack today. You will need: • To be over 21 • To have a spare room in your property • Life experience of being independent • To have the time and commitment to support a young person

• •

Do you have a spare room? Could you provide a bridge to independent living for a young person age 16-21?

The Supported Lodgings Service is about providing young people aged 16 – 21 the skills and experience they need to be able to eventually live independently by themselves. Matching you and your lodger We take a great deal of care in matching your lodger with you, and we involve you in the selection process. You yourself have the final say in who shares your home. We have taken time to get to know you and the kind of lodgings you can provide, and take into account your needs and the requirements of the young person. The greatest need in our area is for accommodation to suit young people from 16 – 18, usually coming out of foster care, but placements can be for people up to the age of 24 if the young person is in Higher Education. We recently spoke to Laura and Busilana, who have been providing support lodgings for Hull City Council. Over the years they have supported several young people. They explained how they have been supporting young people who are unaccompanied asylum seekers through, not only their processes, but supporting them being adults, helping them with basic skills such as how to cook and clean, how to budget, create routines, be confident and independent. Laura tells us how "there are some challenges supporting people going through the asylum process, which is very dramatic in itself, and because of the pandemic people are waiting longer for decisions and the young people might have lived through war. We support them with that, but also we're given support from different professionals and projects in the city, that we can refer into, giving the young people someone to talk too." Who can be a Supported Lodgings provider We are looking to recruit suitable supported lodgings providers from the Hull and East Riding area who can provide a safe and supportive environment for young people leaving care or other young people who are unable to live at home. 32

S egal’s Jewellers are proud to be celebrating over 100 years as a family run business 1995

1919

South Street The business began, just after the first world war, over 100 years ago in South Street just a stone’s throw from where we are today.

1921

Porter Street The shop moved to larger premises in Porter Street, then a thriving part of Hull. Continuing with clock and watch sales and repairs, Jack Segal started selling antiques and silverware.

1947

Jack Segal and Son Maurice returned from the war and joined the family business. Maurice had a particular interest in antique and secondhand jewellery which turned the business into what it is today.

1963

14 Paragon Arcade Some of you may remember the small single unit where Maurice used to work alone buying and selling secondhand jewellery.

1994

8 Paragon Arcade

Maurice’s wife Shirley used her vast experience to grow the business, creating a further two shops down the Arcade. The Gift Shop and The Silver Shop were opened.

10 Paragon Arcade Shirley’s son Mathew joined forces with Maurice. His love of luxury watches and his expert eye for diamonds took the business into a new dimension – selling new jewellery.

1997

Freshney Place & Princes Quay Jo, Shirley’s daughter, joined and helped expand the business, starting with opening a shop in Grimsby. Then Jo and Jane, Mat’s wife, united to open two shops on the Top Deck of Princes Quay.

2011

The End of an Era Maurice sadly passed away in 2011. He really was one of life’s true gentlemen. To this day Shirley Segal is still very active in overseeing the business.

2019

Chariot House For years our customers have been saying to us ‘You need a bigger shop!’. Segal’s Jewellers is now run by sister and brother, Jo and Mat. Mat and his wife Jane, plus Jo and her husband Martin, all work together to make the business what it is today! Their children are now joining the industry making this a fourth generation family business they are all so very proud of. However, it’s not all about the family – it’s our extended family, the wonderful team that supports us. Many have been with us for decades, and the knowledge and experience they provide we believe is invaluable to our customers. So thank you for being part of our history and our future.
