Editor's Note

We hope you’re all staying safe and well. What a strange period the last month has been… Having said that… the first day of Spring is fast approaching Sunday 20th March.

We can look forward to more daylight, longer days to enjoy some warmer weather, we can’t wait to get out and about with a renewed confidence. For some, winter can be a very long, difficult period, and they look forward to the spring. Do you feel your mood change at certain times of the year? The change of seasons can affect different people in different ways. There are many people who struggle every year with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD affects people’s mood and mental health, which subsequently impacts on their family, friends, and colleagues. One of our guest writers, Jo Kent, from Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Partnership Collaborative Programme, has kindly written an informative piece that we hope will help you if you can relate to this.

Mother’s Day is approaching on Sunday 27th March, and this will be the first time in 2 years that families can go out to socialise properly, without restrictions and lockdowns, to enjoy this occasion. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back (1-hour less sleep that night!) on Sunday 27th March too. Once again, we have some exciting competitions for you, including the friendly folks at PASCO’s Italian Family Restaurant offering the chance to win a meal for a family of 4! You can enter by emailing us at the contact details provided or online using our social media feeds. See the ‘Competitions’ page for more information. There are more events planning to go ahead this year too including, the return of the Cottingham Springboard Festival, a free local festival supported by a grant from Cottingham Parish Council. We hope you enjoy March! Phil and the HEY Magazine Team

4 Luscious Lamb Recipe for March

Ingredients 1 leg of lamb , about 2kg 2 garlic bulbs 15 sprigs rosemary 15 sprigs thyme 1.7kg medium-sized potatoes unpeeled 14 bay leaves One-pan lamb with hasselback 4 tbsp olive oil 1 lemon , juiced potatoes Method STEP 1 Use a small, sharp knife to make at least 30 small, deep, incisions all over the lamb. Halve the garlic bulbs, so at the top the cloves fall away and at the bottom, they remain attached. Peel and slice the tops that have fallen away and keep the other halves for later. Use your fingers to push the slices into each slit. Next, pull off small sprigs of rosemary and thyme, keeping the stalks on, and poke them into the slits, too. Can be done a day ahead, then cover the lamb and chill. Remove from the fridge 1 hr before roasting. STEP 2 Heat oven to 210C/190C fan/gas 7. Sit each potato between the handles of two wooden spoons and cut widthways at 3mm intervals – the spoon handles will stop you slicing all the way through. Slot a bay leaf into the middle slit of each potato. Tip the potatoes into a large roasting tin with the halved garlic bulb and the rest of the rosemary and thyme. Drizzle with half the oil and season, then toss to coat and turn the potatoes so they’re all cut-side up. Nestle the lamb in the middle of the tin, pushing the potatoes to the outside, then rub the lamb with the rest of the oil and the lemon juice and season generously. STEP 3 Roast for 1 hr 30 mins, basting the potatoes and shaking the tin occasionally, until the lamb is dark brown and the potatoes are crisp and golden. The lamb will be pink in the middle but cooked. For rare, cook for 10 mins less, and for well done, 15 mins more. Remove the lamb from the tin and leave to rest for 15 mins, putting the potatoes back in the oven if you need to. Serve drizzled with our green vegetables

Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 8 lamb chops 1kg potatoes, chopped into small chunks 4 rosemary sprigs 4 garlic cloves, left whole 250g cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Rosemary roast lamb chops Method STEP 1 Turn the oven to fan 200C/ conventional 220C/gas 7. Heat half the oil in a flameproof roasting tin or ovenproof sauté pan. Brown the lamb for 2 minutes on each side, then lift out of the pan and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan, add the potatoes, then fry for 4-5 minutes, until starting to brown. Add the rosemary and garlic, then return the lamb to the pan, too. STEP 2 Roast in the oven for 20 minutes, then scatter over the tomatoes and drizzle with the balsamic vinegar. Place back in the oven for 5 minutes, until the tomatoes just begin to split. Remove from the oven and serve straight from the dish. 6

Ingredients 2kg-2.5kg leg of lamb small bunch rosemary, cut into 2cm short sprigs 4-5 garlic cloves, finely sliced 4-6 brown anchovy fillets, chopped (optional) 2 tbsp olive oil 2 large onions, thickly sliced

Easy roast leg of lamb Method STEP 1 Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Remove all packaging from the lamb and keep a note of the weight to calculate the roasting time. Make incisions into the lamb using a small sharp knife, at an angle, about 5cm into the meat. Making the holes at an angle will mean more of the meat is flavoured, and the flavourings will be less tempted to be pushed out when roasting. STEP 2 Insert a short sprig of rosemary, a garlic slice and a small piece of anchovy (if using) into each of the holes, pressing in well with your finger. Season the meat all over with salt and pepper, then rub the lamb all over with the olive oil. Transfer to a roasting tin, sat on the onion slices. Roast for 20 mins. STEP 3 Lower the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5 and cook for another 15-20 mins per 500g (1 hr – 1 hr 20 mins for 2kg leg) depending on how pink you like your lamb. You can also check the internal temperature of the lamb if you prefer pinker meat – it will be 55C for medium (pink) and 70C for well done. STEP 4 Cover with foil and rest for 15 mins before carving. Save the tray juices and onion slices to make gravy.

Herby lamb cobbler

Ingredients 1 tbsp sunflower oil 200g smoked streaky bacon, preferably in one piece, skinned and cut into pieces 900g lamb neck fillets, cut into large chunks 350g baby onion, peeled 5 carrots, cut into large chunks 350g small button mushroom 3 tbsp plain flour 3 bay leaves small bunch thyme

350ml red wine 350ml lamb or beef stock large splash Worcestershire sauce For the cobbler topping 350g self-raising flour 4 tbsp chopped mixed herb, including thyme, rosemary and parsley 200g chilled butter, grated juice 1 lemon 5 bay leaves beaten egg, to glaze

Method STEP 1 Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. In a flameproof casserole, heat the oil, then sizzle the bacon for 5 mins until crisp. Turn up the heat, then cook the lamb for 10 mins until brown. Remove meats with a slotted spoon, turn the heat up to maximum, then add the onions, carrots and mushrooms. Cook for about 5 mins until starting to colour, then stir in the flour. Return the meat to the pan with the herbs, and pour over the wine, stock and Worcestershire sauce. Season, then cover and braise in the oven, undisturbed, for about 1 hr 20 mins. STEP 2 After about 1 hr, make the topping. Tip the flour and herbs into a large bowl, then season with salt and pepper. Add the butter and mix using a fork. Make a well, then add the lemon juice and 3 tbsp water. Gently bring together to make a soft dough. Roll out on a lightly floured surface to about 1.5cm thick, then cut into rounds using a 7.5cm pastry cutter. Re-roll the trimmings, then cut out more rounds until the dough is used up. After 1 hr 20 mins, take the casserole from the oven, remove the lid, then arrange the circles of dough, overlapping, around the edge of the dish, sticking bay leaves between them. Brush with egg and bake for 45 mins until golden. For more information or advertising enquiries, please contact us on Tel: 01482 529099 or sales@heymagazine.co.uk

In future issues, we will be interviewing 2 players from the Hull Jets, Mark Florence and Chris Hogarth, to learn more about their ice hockey journey and what it’s like to play competitive ice hockey for the Hull Jets. Good luck for the last 2 games of the season!

Britain, England, Conference, and our very own club, with some making a career out of the sport and most of these players started on the Sunday learn to play session. All Kington Sharks’ Junior games are free of charge for spectators to come and watch, support these young players and for everyone to enjoy. Upcoming games can be found on the Shark’s website.

Kingston Sharks Learn to Play Ice Hockey The Hull Ice Arena are working in conjunction with the Kingston Junior Ice Hockey Club (Also known as the Kingston Sharks and Jets) to offer the chance to become an Ice Hockey player of the future. The session is run by the Hull City Council, and the Kingston Sharks provide professional and fully certified coaches and managers to demonstrate and plan the training sessions to instruct the very highest standard of coaching for every child who would like to become an ice hockey player. The Kingston Sharks provide all protective equipment needed for the training session for no extra cost. If possible, if your child could have basic skating ability, this would be helpful as we’d recommend a few skating sessions so the player would be steady on their feet before trying Ice Hockey. The Coaches and managers try and make this session fun but also challenging, this provides the player an opportunity to advance into different areas of Ice hockey. Once the player has reached a relatively good standard, the Head coach off the Kingston Sharks and Jets, Andy Daintith, will invite the chosen players to trial for the Kingston Sharks to be offered a place into the main team training. Sessions run on a Monday and Wednesday evening, but this would only be offered when the coaches feel the player is ready. Over the years, the Sharks have had lots of success with Ice hockey in the city with players now playing for Great

The session is offered on a Sunday morning between the hours of 9-10am, prices can be found on the Hull City Council website, and for the same price, you also get the skating session 10-12 for free of charge to work on your skating abilities. registration with GPs and dentists, and supporting with referrals to relevant services such as counselling, domestic abuse support, mental health and substance misuse services. The end goal is to move them on, into independent accommodation, enabling people to have brighter futures.

Who are Humbercare? Humbercare are a local voluntary organisation and registered charity, established in 1989 we have delivered local services for local people for the last 33 years. Over the years our services have been designed in partnership and commissioned by the Humberside Probation Service and by Local Authorities across the four Humber sub regions. We also deliver services funded by the Humber NHS Teaching Trust and receive grant monies from various charitable organisations. The focus of our work is supporting vulnerable adults and young people to achieve independent living with the core focus of working with those that have offended, are at risk of offending or those facing multiple disadvantages such as homelessness, mental health issues, adverse trauma or general barriers to community living. What do we do? Humbercare is breaking down barriers that socially excluded individuals face when accessing housing and support services. Enabling an opportunity for all individuals to realise and develop their own potential. We deliver a number of services ranging from low level advice and guidance provision through to high level complex care and support that is regulated by the Care Quality Commission. We work under the umbrella of a registered Social Landlord delivering a large housing portfolio across Hull, East Riding and North East Lincolnshire. Through which we provide low level supported accommodation, for those individuals that present as homeless, are leaving care, are being discharged from hospital or prison without an address or have experienced tenancy or family/ relationship breakdowns and need accommodation and a little support and guidance to learn how to manage a tenancy and a home, gain some stability in their lives and integrate into local communities utiltising the many local statutory and voluntary services available to them for additional support. Through weekly visits by our team of housing officers we can help people to get on track, access the services they need, learn and develop independent living skills, learn how to manage a tenancy and eventually work towards moving on to long term accommodation without the need for support. Humbercare delivers the local Westbourne House Housing Related Support Service, commissioned by the local authority to provide accommodation and support to those that the local authority identify and refer to us as homeless or rough sleeping. The service exists to support people from the streets, providing a roof over their head whilst delivering person centred support packages addressing personal issues that may have led to their homelessness. Support provision can include basic hygiene and nutrition support, social inclusion activities, accessing the appropriate benefits,

The many other services we deliver, which can all be found on our website, all focus on care and support to individuals within their own homes, be this a home provided by Humbercare or any other accommodation provider including their own home. The support can be from a minimal one hour per week ranging to 24-hour live-in support by our staff team, all delivered in accordance with commissioned contract specifications and service users’ needs and wishes. Support as above is advice, guidance, care and support packages tailored to the individual to support them to secure, maintain and then sustain independent living, moving on from our services at a time that is appropriate to them, when they are ready to live independently without support. Who are our staff team? We currently have a team of around 150 staff with an age range of 18 to 70. We are a diverse employer inclusive of a fair proportion of mixed gender and currently employ 24% of the staff team that are considered to have a registered disability. We offer permanent contracts in the main but also provide secondment opportunities, temporary contracts, zero hours contracts as per the wishes of the applicant and needs of a service. Our staff retention is positive with high numbers of the staff team having long lengths of service, for example our managers team, many of whom have progressed through from support worker positions, the majority have 10 years and more as length of service. Our team comes to us through many routes, some have lived experience and some are fresh out of college or university following completion of Criminology, Psychology or Health and Social Care or Social Work courses. So why join us? Many of the roles at Humbercare do not require a qualification or specific working experience as we offer on the job training and extensive training packages. We look for common sense, compassion, commitment to our cause and the desire to make a difference to people’s lives. Many staff utilise our opportunities as a stepping stone to gain valuable experience of the sector and have successfully moved on to secure careers in Police, Probation Service and Social Work departments. The roles we hold include receptionists, cleaners, caretakers, finance assistants, administration assistants, housing officers, support workers, care workers, team leaders, senior officers, managers through to senior management team roles. We are always seeking new members to join our team, bringing in new ideas, new ways of working, valued experience and skills. If you like the sound of the work we do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Navigation Wealth Management A Senior Practice Partner of St. James’s Place Wealth Management

New office now open in Beverley. Navigation Wealth Management Ltd have just opened their new office on Spencer Street, Beverley, and provide holistic wealth management advice to clients based across the UK, helping them to achieve their individual financial aspirations. They are renowned for demonstrating knowledge & expertise, offering sound advice and exceptional service, as demonstrated in their nomination as an awards finalist for Customer Service Team of the Year 2022 at the Yorkshire Financial Awards. Navigation Wealth Management was founded in 2000 by David North, one of three owners of the business alongside colleagues, Darren Wood and CEO, Matt Hammond: and working in partnership alongside St. James’s Place Wealth Management, a FTSE 100 company. Matt told me “when you hear the words, wealth management, it can often be interpreted as a service just for the wealthy, but it’s absolutely not the case”. Matt explains “we offer financial advice for everyone, whether it’s somebody starting on the property ladder for the first time who requires a mortgage or life protection to keep their family safe, all the way through to planning for; or at retirement, investment and inheritance tax planning for both individuals and corporate companies”. We provide advice and services to individuals, business owners and medical professionals, including GPs and Dentists.

“Local businesses are welcome to use our board room Free of Charge”

At Navigation Wealth Management Ltd, “we believe in spending time with our clients, building long term relationships, to ensure we learn about you, your current position and discuss your aspirations for the future. This is achieved through regular face-to-face meetings to build, monitor, review and amend investment propositions, which we feel are essential to effective financial planning”. Speaking with Matt, who was born in Beverley and attended school in Hornsea, he told us “We believe in good old fashioned, client-centric advice and service”. “We aim to give every one of our clients an individually tailored service to help meet their objectives. Matt explained that they been growing a team of financial advisers in the business with varying specialisms, allowing the company to provide a service for any need. “We have 45 team members, 21 of which are Financial Advisers or Client Relationship Managers, and 6 of these advisors are based here in Beverley”. Matt said “we have clients all over the UK and beyond, but we had a huge presence in East Yorkshire with existing clients. It was them who suggested we should bring our award-winning advice and service to Beverley”. Matt says that he isn’t surprised by the welcome they have received from the local community. “It’s been a warm and supportive reception, which is everything that the people of East Yorkshire are known for, and I hope to meet more of the local community now our doors are open for business”. Navigation Wealth Management have already done their part to give back and reciprocate this by supporting several local charities and good causes including the Cash for Kids ‘Mission Christmas’ Appeal and by donating over £6,000 in recent fundraising activities (2021). Matt told me “I’d love to be able to take that up and increase it further in 2022”. Matt is also keen to support local businesses too, explaining “we have also made the use of our brand new, 12-seater

and this can end up with the wrong outcome. If investors have an active relationship with their trusted financial adviser, they should have a reassuring level of contact and communication, with their financial advisers being there to provide assurances and updates on events, thus avoiding any knee-jerk reactions that could cost the client in the longer term”.

board room, available to any local businesses that may require the use of a meeting room, free of charge. We are proud to be part of the local business community, it’s all about supporting and helping each other where we can”. As you would expect, we were always going to end up talking about the Covid19 pandemic and its effect on the financial markets and ultimately, investors. The effects of the pandemic on business proved a difficult period to navigate and an unsettling time for investors due to the fear of the unknown. Matt spoke honestly and openly explaining “we are living through a period of unprecedented change and uncertainty. With volatile markets, changes in regulation and taxation, we constantly review and give careful consideration as to how these factors will impact on our clients”. Matt went on to say, “nobody has any previous experience to directly compare to these unprecedented circumstances and the journey we’ve been on, there are no comparisons to make against previous events making it more difficult to make predictions on how the market will react”. “However, we increased our contact to clients to provide reassurance and ongoing service” said Matt. “We wanted to ensure that any decisions the clients made were as informed as possible as opposed to emotional reactions. And our plan is to stick with this method throughout 2022”. Matt elaborated further with an example explaining “We have to learn to live with the noise as there will always be uncertainty. A good example I use to help affirm this point is that you wouldn’t jump out of an aeroplane if you hit some turbulence. You’d ride it out, placing your trust in the knowledge and experience of teams in control (the pilots, or advisors in this case) and wait for the plane to land safely. In simple terms, don’t react to emotions, seek professional advice and utilise their expertise”.

Matt explained “we pride ourselves on exceptionally high standards of financial planning with trust and professionalism forming the basis of our client relationships. Our sole aim is to provide our clients with the very best financial advice and ongoing service, putting our clients’ needs at the heart of the business”. And the proof is in the pudding. Navigation Wealth Management has been voted one of the Top 3 financial advice companies in Wakefield in 2020. More recently, they are a finalist in the ‘Customer Service Team of the Year’ category in the Yorkshire Financial Advice Awards 2021, with the results being announced at an awards ceremony in February 2022. Matt says, “we have our fingers crossed for a positive outcome at the awards, I am immensely proud of all of the team at Navigation Wealth Management, for all of their hard work and the level of service they are providing to our clients”. “As we look forward in 2022, we have our new events programme planned for our clients and guests, ranging from golf days to afternoon teas and sporting dinners, all held at local venues and with the aim of raising money for local charities”. Navigation Wealth Management welcomes existing and new clients to arrange meetings to discuss their future plans to secure a brighter future, either via video call or in person at their offices on Spencer Street, Beverley. To receive a complimentary guide covering wealth management, retirement planning or inheritance tax planning, contact Navigation Wealth Management on 01482 379504 or email navigationwm@sjpp.co.uk Navigation Wealth Management Ltd is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James's Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority).

This client-centric approach that has helped all of Navigation Wealth Management clients feel informed and comfortable during these times. Matt and his team are always aiming to provide a relaxed, relationship-based feeling to their clients whilst offering the highest level of professionalism. Matt explains “it’s why ‘active’ financial advice is so important. It’s natural for many investors react with emotion,

RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENT BEYOND THE CORONAVIRUS

How the investment community can help advance the environmental gains that have come out of COVID-19 The consequences of the coronavirus pandemic will clearly be profound, wide-ranging and long-lasting. So, it’s no surprise that any sources of optimism to be found as the crisis unfolds are quickly seized upon. Perhaps the most significant so far has come in the form of the immediate effects on the environment. Greenhouse gas emissions have fallen, while data from NASA suggests that air quality has improved dramatically as countries around the world have taken steps to restrict activity and travel. Indeed, this could be an opportunity for organisations to rethink how they do business – and question whether they need to return to a form of normality in which, for example, employees are flown to meetings that could otherwise be held using video conferencing facilities. A more realistic rate of change Unfortunately, however, the environmental positives are likely to be temporary. Indeed, there is now a risk of efforts to address climate change becoming a lesser priority as governments focus on dealing with the economic implications of the crisis. This is why the investment industry has an important role to play in maintaining the momentum that has gathered in recent weeks and months. The biggest crisis now is clearly COVID-19, but the biggest crisis of the 2020s is still climate change, and we need to ensure that once we’re on the other side of the coronavirus pandemic that governments keep focusing on that. But the environmental gains from the pandemic have clearly been made alongside painful social, economic and health consequences. In other words, the current rate of improvement is unsustainable. If we’re taking climate change seriously, we would rather see a smooth transition at a rate less dramatic than we’re seeing at the moment. We don’t want to be in a position

28

www.heymagazine.co.uk | March 2022

of having to bring a halt to everything, as we are now, in order to have that environmental impact. We can invest for change Responsible investing isn’t just about the environment, of course. The crisis has also shone the spotlight on corporate behaviours – both good and bad – and helped illustrate why businesses cannot simply be about making profits. If they are going to be successful, they need to think about their wider stakeholders. Companies that have put measures in place for employees, for example, will come out of this with higher employee satisfaction and community spirit – and that contributes to their longterm success. The importance of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) factors in investment decisions has only become clearer as the crisis has unfolded. Investors increasingly seek information about sustainability and responsible investing, with growing awareness of the broader long-term aspects of successful and effective investing. Anyone who wants to explore their responsible investing options should speak with a financial adviser.
