Emily's Battle with Batten

Facebook

On 20th January 2022 the Atkin family’s hearts were broken when they received the devastating news that their beautiful 10-year-old daughter Emily has a lifelimiting condition called Batten Disease. Batten Disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that causes blindness; epilepsy; difficulties sleeping; the decline of speech, language and swallowing skills; and a deterioration of fine and gross motor skills that result in the loss of mobility. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Batten Disease and children suffering from this condition don’t often live longer than their teens. In 2020 Emily started to lose her vision and is now severely visually impaired and on the blind register. Her sight continues to deteriorate, and they don’t know how much longer she will be able to see for. This has been tough for Emily, but not once has she complained, and she still tries to give as many things a go as she can. Her speech is now regressing too, which can be frustrating for her as she has so much, she wants to say but really struggles to get her words out clearly. Emily is the kindest, sweetest, most gentle and loving girl that you could ever meet. She does not have a bad bone in her body and her happy nature can’t help but make you smile. She loves to talk (we literally can’t stop her sometimes) and she keeps everyone laughing every day. Her strength and resilience the last few years make those who now her beyond proud, she doesn’t let this disease get her down and always has a smile on her face. Emily has a lovely relationship with her big brother GoFundMe Page

GoFundMe Page

Lewis and the family are devastated too, for him, that he will have to watch his little sister get so poorly. Neither of them deserves this to be their childhood. Another thing you should know about Emily is that she LOVES Harry Potter! we’d even go as far as saying she is obsessed! She often asks her family to call her Harry and not Emily and spends most of her time at home in her Gryffindor robes whizzing around on her broomstick. When the family left the hospital in January, they were told to go away and make as many memories as possible with Emily. So that is what they plan on doing. Unfortunately, this disease can progress quickly, so they don’t know how much time Emily has to be able to have new experiences and create those memories. Their aim and ours at HEY Magazine is to raise money in order to carry out her bucket list. The family would love to take her for a meal at the Leaky Cauldron and wand shopping at Ollivanders, to see The Cursed Child on the West End in London, or on a holiday were she can spend carefree hours splashing in the pool. They know these things won’t all be doable, but Emily deserves the world and more and they will try their hardest to give her the best life possible. There are lots of fundraising activities being organised so if you’d like to get involved, please follow Emily’s journey on Facebook, or please scan the QR code and donate.

HOT CHOCOLATE & I LOVE THE 70’S DISCO The band became the only group, and one of just three acts, that scored a hit in every year of the 1970s in the UK charts (the other two being Elvis Presley and Diana Ross). The band eventually had at least one hit, every year, between 1970 and 1984. They continued well into the 1980s and clocked up another big hit record: “It Started With a Kiss” in 1982, which reached Number 5 in the UK. In all, the group charted 25 UK Top 40 hit singles. Their single “You Sexy Thing” became the only track that made British Top Ten status in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Its renewed appreciation can be credited in part to its appearances in a string of successful films starting with the 1997 comedy The Full Monty. Tickets for the HOT CHOCOLATE - June 2022 – Holmfirth show are available from: Saturday 4th June 2022 HOLMFIRTH – Picturedrome Doors – 7.30pm Website – https://thegigcartel.seetickets.com/event/hotchocolate-i-love-the-70-s-disco/picturedrome/1951249 Tickets - £27.50 advance For further information on HOT CHOCOLATE, check out the following website / social media links: Website – http://www.hot-chocolate.co.uk/ Hot Chocolate + I love The 70’s Disco. In 1970, Hot Chocolate with the help of record producer Mickie Most, began releasing tracks that became hits, such as “Love is Life”, “Emma”, “You Could Have Been a Lady”, and “I Believe in Love”. It was however in the disco era of the mid-1970s that Hot Chocolate became a big success, with big hits like “You Sexy Thing” and “Every 1’s a Winner”. In 1977, after scoring 15 hits, they finally reached Number One with “So You Win Again”. Other hits followed including “No Doubt About It”, “Girl Crazy”, “Brother Louie” & “Put Your Love In Me”.

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS special events of energy and power. Their studio albums demonstrate their passion and anger, each in its own way. In ’94 they released the Get a Life LP. The album helped renew interest in SLF just as newer bands that sited them as a major influence, such as Bad Religion, Sugar, Rancid and Therapy, were coming to prominence. In August 2003, Stiff Little Fingers released their ninth studio album, Guitar and Drum, which includes a moving tribute to Joe Strummer, entitled “Strummerville”.

Stiff Little Fingers are pleased to announce a run of UK shows for 2022 around their festival appearances and Ireland dates this summer and early autumn. Stiff Little Fingers were formed in 1977 in Belfast, Ireland. Along with the likes of the Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Sham 69, Stranglers, et al – Stiff Little Fingers were at the forefront of the punk movement. They wrote initially about their own lives, growing up at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, in songs like “Suspect Device” and “Wasted Life”. In November of ’77, they released those two songs on their own Rigid Digits label, and sent a copy to BBC Radio One DJ John Peel, who started playing it every night. These were the first of what became SLF’s signature style: lyrics that meld the personal and political, music that combines the energy of punk with infectious hooks, and delivery that rings of honesty and commitment. In 1979 they became the first band ever to hit the UK top 20 album charts on an independent label with their debut Inflammable Material. The album chronicles the band’s anger and frustration at “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland, and calls on youth to create their own reality. Over the years, their live shows continued to be

After many studio albums and countless tours, Stiff Little Fingers find themselves more in demand than ever. They are currently working on a new album, and many of the new songs have been debuted at live gigs, with tremendous response from fans. With song titles like Trail of Tears, My Dark Places and Liar’s Club covering topics such as the recent economic collapse, Jake’s personal struggle with depression, and continuing racism in the west. Jake has said, “You’ve probably worked out by now, I don’t do “comedy” songs !!” But the songs continue to inspire fans old and new. Countless people have already contacted Jake to say that “My Dark Places” gave them the strength to tell others about their own bouts with depression. Though focused on their new material, they always play the old favourites at gigs. Jake said, “You have to strike a balance. The difficulty with a band like ourselves is to try not make it sound like a cabaret band. Obviously, it’d be very easy to go, ‘Hey, here’s another old one you may remember.’ A lot of the old songs the audience greet like old friends. I suppose it’s the same as any band that’s been around for any length of time. And yes, there are nights that we don’t particularly want to play “Alternative Ulster” or “Suspect Device” because we’ve heard them ‘til they’re coming out our ears. But there’s always the possibility that somebody out there has never seen the band before, never heard them.” Using the band’s rich musical foundation as a building block, the time has come to bring the

newest chapter of the band’s music to the world. The new songs, penned over the last decade, show a definite musical growth in the band. The result is the band’s latest release – No Going Back was released in March 2014. Stiff Little Fingers under the banner “In Your Backyard - Summer 2022 Tour” includes the following dates:

Jake Burns comments “After our March tour we couldn’t wait to be back for the summer, so decided to put in some headline dates in towns we don’t often get the chance to visit - hence the “In Your Backyard” tour title … see you all shortly!” Tickets for all shows go on-sale @ 10.00am on Friday 29th April (except Festivals, Southend, Norwich, Northampton, Gloucester, Buckley Warrington, Cork, Dublin, Belfast which are on sale now).

Navigation Wealth Management A Senior Practice Partner of St. James’s Place Wealth Management

New office now open in Beverley. Navigation Wealth Management Ltd have just opened their new office on Spencer Street, Beverley, and provide holistic wealth management advice to clients based across the UK, helping them to achieve their individual financial aspirations. They are renowned for demonstrating knowledge & expertise, offering sound advice and exceptional service, as demonstrated in their nomination as an awards finalist for Customer Service Team of the Year 2022 at the Yorkshire Financial Awards. Navigation Wealth Management was founded in 2000 by David North, one of three owners of the business alongside colleagues, Darren Wood and CEO, Matt Hammond: and working in partnership alongside St. James’s Place Wealth Management, a FTSE 100 company. Matt told me “when you hear the words, wealth management, it can often be interpreted as a service just for the wealthy, but it’s absolutely not the case”. Matt explains “we offer financial advice for everyone, whether it’s somebody starting on the property ladder for the first time who requires a mortgage or life protection to keep their family safe, all the way through to planning for; or at retirement, investment and inheritance tax planning for both individuals and corporate companies”. We provide advice and services to individuals, business owners and medical professionals, including GPs and Dentists.

“Local businesses are welcome to use our board room Free of Charge”

28

www.heymagazine.co.uk | May & June 2022

At Navigation Wealth Management Ltd, “we believe in spending time with our clients, building long term relationships, to ensure we learn about you, your current position and discuss your aspirations for the future. This is achieved through regular face-to-face meetings to build, monitor, review and amend investment propositions, which we feel are essential to effective financial planning”. Speaking with Matt, who was born in Beverley and attended school in Hornsea, he told us “We believe in good old fashioned, client-centric advice and service”. “We aim to give every one of our clients an individually tailored service to help meet their objectives. Matt explained that they been growing a team of financial advisers in the business with varying specialisms, allowing the company to provide a service for any need. “We have 45 team members, 21 of which are Financial Advisers or Client Relationship Managers, and 6 of these advisors are based here in Beverley”. Matt said “we have clients all over the UK and beyond, but we had a huge presence in East Yorkshire with existing clients. It was them who suggested we should bring our award-winning advice and service to Beverley”. Matt says that he isn’t surprised by the welcome they have received from the local community. “It’s been a warm and supportive reception, which is everything that the people of East Yorkshire are known for, and I hope to meet more of the local community now our doors are open for business”. Navigation Wealth Management have already done their part to give back and reciprocate this by supporting several local charities and good causes including the Cash for Kids ‘Mission Christmas’ Appeal and by donating over £6,000 in recent fundraising activities (2021). Matt told me “I’d love to be able to take that up and increase it further in 2022”. Matt is also keen to support local businesses too, explaining “we have also made the use of our brand new, 12-seater

and this can end up with the wrong outcome. If investors have an active relationship with their trusted financial adviser, they should have a reassuring level of contact and communication, with their financial advisers being there to provide assurances and updates on events, thus avoiding any knee-jerk reactions that could cost the client in the longer term”.

board room, available to any local businesses that may require the use of a meeting room, free of charge. We are proud to be part of the local business community, it’s all about supporting and helping each other where we can”. As you would expect, we were always going to end up talking about the Covid19 pandemic and its effect on the financial markets and ultimately, investors. The effects of the pandemic on business proved a difficult period to navigate and an unsettling time for investors due to the fear of the unknown. Matt spoke honestly and openly explaining “we are living through a period of unprecedented change and uncertainty. With volatile markets, changes in regulation and taxation, we constantly review and give careful consideration as to how these factors will impact on our clients”. Matt went on to say, “nobody has any previous experience to directly compare to these unprecedented circumstances and the journey we’ve been on, there are no comparisons to make against previous events making it more difficult to make predictions on how the market will react”. “However, we increased our contact to clients to provide reassurance and ongoing service” said Matt. “We wanted to ensure that any decisions the clients made were as informed as possible as opposed to emotional reactions. And our plan is to stick with this method throughout 2022”. Matt elaborated further with an example explaining “We have to learn to live with the noise as there will always be uncertainty. A good example I use to help affirm this point is that you wouldn’t jump out of an aeroplane if you hit some turbulence. You’d ride it out, placing your trust in the knowledge and experience of teams in control (the pilots, or advisors in this case) and wait for the plane to land safely. In simple terms, don’t react to emotions, seek professional advice and utilise their expertise”.

Matt explained “we pride ourselves on exceptionally high standards of financial planning with trust and professionalism forming the basis of our client relationships. Our sole aim is to provide our clients with the very best financial advice and ongoing service, putting our clients’ needs at the heart of the business”. And the proof is in the pudding. Navigation Wealth Management has been voted one of the Top 3 financial advice companies in Wakefield in 2020. More recently, they are a finalist in the ‘Customer Service Team of the Year’ category in the Yorkshire Financial Advice Awards 2021, with the results being announced at an awards ceremony in February 2022. Matt says, “we have our fingers crossed for a positive outcome at the awards, I am immensely proud of all of the team at Navigation Wealth Management, for all of their hard work and the level of service they are providing to our clients”. “As we look forward in 2022, we have our new events programme planned for our clients and guests, ranging from golf days to afternoon teas and sporting dinners, all held at local venues and with the aim of raising money for local charities”. Navigation Wealth Management welcomes existing and new clients to arrange meetings to discuss their future plans to secure a brighter future, either via video call or in person at their offices on Spencer Street, Beverley. Working for Humbercare means really making a difference to someone’s life. Its supporting, challenging and enabling someone to be able to live their most independent life and helping them reach that level of freedom is very rewarding

I have worked at Humbercare now for over 6 years, within this time I have progressed within my role and gained a wealth of knowledge and experience.

social inclusion activities, accessing the appropriate benefits, registration with GPs and dentists, and supporting with referrals to relevant services such as counselling, domestic abuse support, mental health and substance misuse services. The end goal is to move them on, into independent accommodation, enabling people to have brighter futures.

Who are Humbercare? Humbercare are a local voluntary organisation and registered charity, established in 1989 we have delivered local services for local people for the last 33 years. Over the years our services have been designed in partnership and commissioned by the Humberside Probation Service and by Local Authorities across the four Humber sub regions. We also deliver services funded by the Humber NHS Teaching Trust and receive grant monies from various charitable organisations. The focus of our work is supporting vulnerable adults and young people to achieve independent living with the core focus of working with those that have offended, are at risk of offending or those facing multiple disadvantages such as homelessness, mental health issues, adverse trauma or general barriers to community living. What do we do? Humbercare is breaking down barriers that socially excluded individuals face when accessing housing and support services. Enabling an opportunity for all individuals to realise and develop their own potential. We deliver a number of services ranging from low level advice and guidance provision through to high level complex care and support that is regulated by the Care Quality Commission. We work under the umbrella of a registered Social Landlord delivering a large housing portfolio across Hull, East Riding and North East Lincolnshire. Through which we provide low level supported accommodation, for those individuals that present as homeless, are leaving care, are being discharged from hospital or prison without an address or have experienced tenancy or family/ relationship breakdowns and need accommodation and a little support and guidance to learn how to manage a tenancy and a home, gain some stability in their lives and integrate into local communities utiltising the many local statutory and voluntary services available to them for additional support. Through weekly visits by our team of housing officers we can help people to get on track, access the services they need, learn and develop independent living skills, learn how to manage a tenancy and eventually work towards moving on to long term accommodation without the need for support. Humbercare delivers the local Westbourne House Housing Related Support Service, commissioned by the local authority to provide accommodation and support to those that the local authority identify and refer to us as homeless or rough sleeping. The service exists to support people from the streets, providing a roof over their head whilst delivering person centred support packages addressing personal issues that may have led to their homelessness. Support provision can include basic hygiene and nutrition support,

The many other services we deliver, which can all be found on our website, all focus on care and support to individuals within their own homes, be this a home provided by Humbercare or any other accommodation provider including their own home. The support can be from a minimal one hour per week ranging to 24-hour live-in support by our staff team, all delivered in accordance with commissioned contract specifications and service users’ needs and wishes. Support as above is advice, guidance, care and support packages tailored to the individual to support them to secure, maintain and then sustain independent living, moving on from our services at a time that is appropriate to them, when they are ready to live independently without support. Who are our staff team? We currently have a team of around 150 staff with an age range of 18 to 70. We are a diverse employer inclusive of a fair proportion of mixed gender and currently employ 24% of the staff team that are considered to have a registered disability. We offer permanent contracts in the main but also provide secondment opportunities, temporary contracts, zero hours contracts as per the wishes of the applicant and needs of a service. Our staff retention is positive with high numbers of the staff team having long lengths of service, for example our managers team, many of whom have progressed through from support worker positions, the majority have 10 years and more as length of service. Our team comes to us through many routes, some have lived experience and some are fresh out of college or university following completion of Criminology, Psychology or Health and Social Care or Social Work courses. So why join us? Many of the roles at Humbercare do not require a qualification or specific working experience as we offer on the job training and extensive training packages. We look for common sense, compassion, commitment to our cause and the desire to make a difference to people’s lives. Many staff utilise our opportunities as a stepping stone to gain valuable experience of the sector and have successfully moved on to secure careers in Police, Probation Service and Social Work departments. The roles we hold include receptionists, cleaners, caretakers, finance assistants, administration assistants, housing officers, support workers, care workers, team leaders, senior officers, managers through to senior management team roles. We are always seeking new members to join our team, bringing in new ideas, new ways of working, valued experience and skills. If you like the sound of the work we do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
