As with all auction cars, Stanley’s 3-liter C8 will be offered at No Reserve. He became acquainted with Chevrolet’s top executives when the C7 debuted in 2013; Mark Reuss, the president, asked if he would like to take part in designing a 2015 Stingray model for the 2014 SEMA Show. He agreed and worked with the carmaker to create a color inspired by a supercar he had seen, which is close to the Long Beach Red paint option offered in 2016.

From Mopar, a Plum Crazy 1970 Dodge HEMI Challenger RT/SE is one of 22 produced with a HEMI and a 4-speed. It is powered by a period-correct 426/425-hp V-8 HEMI with a manual 4-speed A833 transmission. And, from the same year, a matching-numbers Plymouth Superbird is finished in B5 Blue and carries the 440-ci V-8 with a 6-barrel carburetor paired to an automatic transmission.
Two classic 1969 Bowties are a Camaro ZL1 COPO #27 of 69 that year; baseball great Reggie Jackson was the former owner. Power for the Fathom Green-liveried racer comes from an all-aluminum 427-ci ZL1 engine linked to an automatic transmission. And, a 1969 custom convertible packs a supercharged 6.2-liter GM LT4 V-8 crate engine and a GM 8-speed automatic transmission.
And, as featured on the cover of GM High-Tech and Car Craft magazines, a 1987 Buick Regal Limited Custom is powered by a 276-ci Buick Motors Stage II engine backed by a Billet TH400 automatic transmission. They call it “The Silver Bullet.”

What’s Next, Sellers or Buyers Market? Story by Frank Aazami (with David M. Brown) Globally, it’s been a sellers market for the last few years, characterized by critically low inventory and high demand. It’s now changing fast. Subsequently, all parties need to refocus, restrategize, so that sellers, buyers and, yes, agents, too, can achieve best-possible outcomes. Of course, you’ll still get good money for your luxury Valley residence and in good time, especially if it was built top tier and in a premium guard/gated community such as Silverleaf, with its McDowell Sonoran Preserve accessibility, amenity-rich clubhouse and championship golf. People have been moving to Arizona in record numbers since air-conditioning came to the Valley around 1947. Ironically, that pace only accelerated in the COVID era. That trend promises to continue as people move from colder, denser populated areas to open golf spaces and Arizona sun. According to the most recent Penske 12th annual list of the country’s top ten moving destinations, Phoenix is third. We are now an A-list state, thanks to a positive business and tax environment. One effective tool to accurately gauge the short-term supply and demand trends is the Cromford® Market Index (CMI). An index score of around 100 represents a balanced market. Above 100 represents demand exceeding supply –– a sellers market. By contrast, a CMI below 100 represents supply exceeding demand –– a buyers market.

It’s important to note that the “smart guys” are seeing price stability after some softening. Buyers are not going to pay much more per square foot for existing homes –– unless they are exceptionally finished in terms of structure, craftsmanship, millwork and materials. So, too, inflation is actually double digit, if the Fed revealed the true numbers, and mortgage interest rates are quickly rising as the historic tool to stem the tide. That said, rates are still historically favorable, and many buyers in this niche pay cash for their homes. Those rising interest rates will be more of an issue in the newbuyer and move-up segments. I am more concerned with what the stock and bond markets do. And, I’m also more concerned about local and national politics, tax laws, for example, what policies are in play, and geopolitical issues such as the war in Ukraine and its effect on gas and grain prices and the confidence the well-off have in buying real estate or laying low for a while. A Needed Shift in Marketing Strategy Balzotti notes: “More competition between sellers translates to more discriminating buyers, especially as interest rates rise, which diminishes buying power, and buyers become hyperconcerned about paying too much in a softening market.”

He adds: “I call it “Competitive Positioning” –– the proven formula whereby sellers can still get top dollar in the shortest amount of time. It simply means you’re positioning your listing as the next best one, all things considered. After all, a good working definition of residential real estate sales is, “It’s competition for the next best home in any given market segment that drives the price and shortens the market time.” In any market, buyers always buy by comparison, he explains. But, in this one, they’re going to be looking even closer at details and comparing buying existing to building new. “So, there’s no better time to hire a market expert who’s versed in disclosing your property’s market value. In ultra-competitive pockets where multiple offers are received, we need to educate our clients to market dynamics in the various submarkets, noting factors such as the absorption rate, the number of months supply and the narrow list-to-sale-price specific to that submarket.” Newbuilds and Shifting Priorities At the same time, we have been experiencing this dramatic shift in the market, we are noticing high-end luxury newbuilds in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. While prices remain high, as the number of resale luxury homes for sale diminishes, builders and developers are realizing they can build exclusive homes in marquee communities for top dollar. One, in Paradise Valley, will feature over 30 $15-plus million homes all with proximity to the Ritz Carlton development.

A distinct advantage for these investor/developers bought the land years ago at the right time, while buyers today are paying as much as double for the land. Those long-sighted savvy buyers are saying, “Let’s go ahead and build now.” These luxebuilds will carry innovative styling to meet the demands of deep-pocketed buyers; they’re tired of overpopularized styles. Remember Tuscanmania in the 1990s and into the new century? Everyone was building them, and some of us were wondering even then why an Italian countryside style was trending in the Arizona desert. Some of these are still on the market after extensive listing. Following this phase, we had more Contemporary. Now people are choosing blend styles such as Moditerranean. The new luxury buyer wants what everyone else doesn’t have, something that sets them apart. Just as importantly, today’s sophisticated buyers want the highest level of finishes, millwork, cabinetry and flooring –– the kind they have in their exotic vehicles and yachts and on boutique ships and concierge-level resorts. They don’t choose just better; they choose best. For them, luxury isn’t a price, it’s an experience. It’s not just listening to a tenor; it’s listening to Pavarotti next to an ancient Roman building on a summer evening in Italy. They’re also demanding top-flight interiors and technologies, including one-off lighting, music, security, unseen cameras and vents: the highest level of aesthetics and experience. Because of the pandemic, they want privacy, a big yard and space between their home and the neighbors’ homes, guard-gated camera security and concierge management service. The builders are putting the upgrade options out there. These

people want it all, and they’re paying in excess of $1,100 a square foot for it. The successful seller in the current market should know where his or her competition is, and a knowledgeable Realtor®, with commensurate foot-on-the ground time, is an ideal partner, especially now. Sellers, for instance, need to realize the distinction between resell and never-lived-there. They can’t claim their 10-year-old occupied home is worth as much as a super-luxe one just out of the ground; that would be false and unrealistic. The savvy buyer distinguishes between the authentic and smoke-and-mirrors “improvements,” such as furnishings and artwork that belie what’s really there. Discerning buyers see through the smoke! Just recently, we listed an uber-luxury home. Yes, it’s Tuscan, but it had been built years ago with exceptionally good finishes –– quality well ahead of the time. We’ll still get top dollar for it, because knowing buyers will recognize that exalted level, appreciate it and realize what its real-time replacement cost is. One program his company offers is “Protected.” With this, Johnson and his staff do threat and vulnerability assessments of businesses and homes, helping to safeguard clients from hostile entries and identifying danger zones. During the initial interview, he asks a client about his or her biggest concerns and challenges. “It’s basic information about who you are,” he explains. “We discover fears and concerns and what is threatening you in order to conquer them.”
A former CIA operative owns DeliverFund. Johnson also works with a former Seal Team member to design specialty knives. A second Shockwave Defense program, Dangerous in 4 Hours, teaches students how to gain the mindset and skillset to be immediately effective in hand-to-hand combat, knife skills and how to improvise tools such as pens and clipboards. Still another, Beyond the Boardroom, offers skills and tactics for executives. In the Valley, for instance, he’s trained upper-management personnel at Shamrock Foods to overcome adversity.
From offices in Albuquerque, Scottsdale and Houston, he works with staff and coordinates with other organizations, in particular, Laser Shot Simulations for scenario-based training and the DeliverFund, which includes former Navy Seals, NSA, CIA and Special Ops agents who target human traffickers, using highly specialized software to track them and take them down. The number of women and children forced into sexual slavery each year in the United States may be as high as 325,000, a Department of Health and Human Services has estimated.

GREAT DRIVES ITALY’S STELVIO PASS written by Peter Volny & Linda Goddard Anyone who has watched the original Top Gear on BBC-TV knows that the irreverent trio of hosts voted the Stelvio Pass as one of the best driving roads in the world. It’s a favorite for drivers of high-performance cars and bikes who come from all over Europe and yes even the USA. The road was built in the 1820’s and took five years to complete. Fighting between Italy and the Austro-Hungarians took place along the pass during the First World War. The total distance is just 22 kilometers, and since it’s at 2,758 meters above sea level it’s closed from November to May due to snow.

We’ve also heard that the view is more scenic from this starting point and the route begins with a climb up the steep wall of switchbacks, rather than sitting on the brakes all the way down. Having planned, researched and dreamed about this drive for several years, we were both—well, perhaps more me—excited and raring to go. Starting with the forested Stelvio National Park, we arrive at the base of a large grey granite mountain where the hairpins begin. The vista changes as we climb and the switchbacks start to mount beneath us, seemingly vertically like a ladder propped against a wall. With increased altitude more and more mountain peaks come into view, stretching off into the distance. In late spring the last vestiges of snow remain in shaded gullies and the odd waterfall tumbles down. Slopes of rockslides indicate where avalanches have occurred, and glaciers are receding.
It’s a cloudless blue sky as my wife and I leave our hotel in Prato allo Stelvio, an alpine town in northern Italy. It’s 8 a.m. and we’re getting an early start so we can beat the traffic to the northwestern entrance of the Stelvio Pass since we know that passing is difficult, and I’ve promised my wife a lesson in

The road is quite narrow, even by European standards, and a low stone wall hugs the edge. We’re driving a Renault Mégane Coupe with a 110-horsepower diesel engine, and although the smooth road begs a few (hundred) more ponies, this is not a high-speed route. You need to pay constant attention and the razor-sharp turns keep our average speed at no more than 50 km/h. We don’t mind. We’re in no hurry and besides, the views are best seen at more moderate velocities.
the drive, we climb back in the car and make our way into the next series of switchbacks that will weave us down to the end of the route in Bormio. Coming downhill the view is spectacular and we can very clearly see the series of hairpins unfolding seemingly right underneath us. The descent involves lots of braking and just brief bursts of acceleration on the short straights between the tight turns. On the GPS the road looks like a twisted strand of spaghetti.
The real test comes at any of the 48 hairpin turns going up and 47 coming down. Each switchback is clearly numbered on large white rocks, so you always know how many are still to come. I soon learn these are not your normal tight turns but true switchbacks, and steep to boot, so I need to gear back to first and keep the revs up, while watching carefully for oncoming traffic. Except for a very exuberant MercedesBenz SL driver and a small road maintenance truck, we encounter no other vehicles. A rare occurrence on the very popular Stelvio. In July and August, the pass is more heavily used, especially on weekends. Bicyclists love this taxing challenge, and on the tight road they greatly impede passing. Motorcyclists too have an affinity for it but a Ducati is unlikely to hold you back. Dreaded tourist coaches and camper vans are far more prevalent on summer weekends.
The whole drive takes us less than two hours including stops to fully appreciate the scenery, though we could have stretched out the time by stopping at some of the isolated cafés and restaurants we pass along the route, including the one at the summit. At the end of the route in Bormio, drivers typically stop and relive the experience over an espresso or gelato, comparing notes on the experience with others. Had we been staying in the area we would have gladly turned around and tackled the drive once more. But we press on, heading to Lugano with another 160 kilometers to go. As a car enthusiast, I’ve made a point of driving many of the world’s most fabulous, challenging and scenic roads. And the Stelvio Pass really is one of the very best. It’s not the longest or even the toughest, but the combination of the numerous hairpin turns stacked one on top of the other, the change in elevation, along with the ever-changing scenery makes it the most memorable. Phantom occupies a unique, pinnacle position in this regard, being revered for its timeless elegance. The eighth-generation of Phantom was presented in 2017. In creating the new expression, Rolls-Royce designers and engineers have been guided by the requests of clients, who have implored RollsRoyce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motor car. In answer to these client demands, only the lightest of design touches, embellishments, and adaptations have been incorporated. Indeed, it is not about what should be changed, but in fact, what should be preserved and protected. A NEW EXPRESSION The most obvious and important feature to be retained is Phantom’s commanding presence. This has been further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon Grille. This gives Phantom a new and assertive modernity, reflecting its driver-focused character. A subtle geometric change to the Pantheon Grille makes the ‘RR’ Badge of Honour and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot more prominent when viewed from the front. The grille itself is now illuminated, a feature debuted and popularised in Ghost. The headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside, and adding further surprise and delight to Phantom's night-time presence. Phantom’s side profile retains Rolls-Royce’s signature short front and long rear overhang, long wheelbase and broad c-pillar, the latter giving greater privacy for occupants. The silhouette preserves the elegant key lines running from the Spirit of Ecstasy to the tapering rear tail. The ‘split-belt’ line begins at the front fender and curves

Highline Autos gently towards the rear door, emphasising the car's long dash-to-axle proportions, before falling gently towards the lantern-like rear lamps. The heavily undercut 'waft line' creates a strong shadow, visually signalling the marque's unequalled ‘Magic Carpet Ride’. The side profile is further enhanced with a suite of new wheels. A 3D, milled, stainless steel wheel with triangular facets is available to commission in a fully or part-polished finish. Alternatively, Phantom may be graced with a truly elegant disc wheel, recalling the romance of 1920’s Rolls-Royce motor cars. This disc wheel is produced in both polished stainless steel and black lacquer, perfectly encapsulating the sense of flight on land. Responding to Phantom clients who have previously requested a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers, these may now be commissioned. This aesthetic now enables Rolls-Royce to transform Phantom into the lightest of light or the darkest of dark appearances.

La Jolla Concours d’Elegance Cruises Back into San Diego written by David M. Brown photos by Matthew Fink After a three-year pandemic hiatus, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance triumphantly returned to Ellen Scripps Browning Park in the La Jolla Cove April 22–24 with 141 cars and eight motorcycles judged in 24 classes on Sunday; a preliminary Ferrari Friday and Tour d’Elegance Saturday morning; gettogethers both nights; and even a vintage air parade, also on Sunday. Presented by LPL Financial and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, the event, “World Class Cars, World Class Experience,” honored the 113th anniversary of Bugatti, with the Best of Show award going to a 1931 Type 51 Coupe from the famed Nethercutt Collection. Two other marque representatives were honored: a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Petite Royale owned by Richard Adams, which received the Aubrey Taylor Upholstery Award, and Lilian McCain’s 1931 Bugatti Type 57, the LPL Summet Best of Marque Award. “Bugatti has such a long and rich history, and for us to cele-

brate this brand by showcasing the first Bugatti built only added to the excitement of the return of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. The event also showcased this year’s featured model, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe, “Gullwing.” On Sunday, Charlie Duvall’s 1956 edition won Outstanding Post-War vehicle. To begin the automotive weekend, the first Ferrari Friday featured 80 registered Prancing Stallions, free for all attendees. “It was a beautiful spectacle that guests to the area enjoyed immensely, he says. At the invite-only Chairman’s Happy Hour that evening, collectors, sponsors, volunteers and supporters enjoyed talking about great cars. “It was a huge success,” Dorvillier says of the event, hosted by the La Jolla Cove House.

On Saturday, 178 car aficionados in 90 cars cruised San Diego County for the La Jolla Tour d’Elegance. And that evening, the magical La Cabaret du Concours featured dress-to-impress attire, entertainment cabaret style, great food, a successful silent and live auction and dancing. “The build-out of the event was playful and colorful, highlighted by expert mixologists creating beautiful craft cocktails with playful unexpected garnishes,” he recalls. And on Sunday for the culminating show, 10,000 attendees enjoyed the Concours automobiles, curated by an all-volunteer committee led by Dorvillier, Robert F. Kerner Jr., co-chair of the Concours, and Chief Judge Nigel Matthews. Among the other award-winners was Valerie and Aaron Weiss’s 1933 Marmon Sixteen, which won in the Outstanding Pre-War division, and Jeff and Kim Phillips’s 1936 Pierce Arrow Twelve Town Car, the Pacific Sotheby's Timeless Elegance Award. Proceeds will benefit the La Jolla Historical Society, which preserves the history of the village of La Jolla, and several local community nonprofit partners each year. “After a three-year layoff due to the pandemic, we welcomed back the automobile hobbiest and fans with a spectacular 2022 Concours d ‘Elegance. It's truly gratifying for all our sponsors, organizing committee, entrants, volunteers and patrons to be back together again at Ellen Scripps Park for this automotive celebration,” Kerner says. “The feedback we are receiving is that it was our best effort yet, and I am honored to be associated with the team of people that worked so hard to put this event together. Sound days? Laguna Seca has very strict sound limits for most days of the year, but HI is including two unlimited sound days, which are normally only offered to racing series like Indy. In this way, vehicles such as Lamborghinis, Paganis and naturally aspirated race cars can run freely at Laguna Seca, Borroni explains. “Guests will also enjoy the unique opportunity of being able to safely run their cars to high speed on a one mile-pluslong runway at nearby Salinas Airport," he adds. Borroni started the event three years ago because he wanted a more experiential way to unite car enthusiasts and collectors with the finest sports car brands. “The idea of the traditional auto show, where the car is sitting on a static stand, is almost something of the past in my mind. Our inspiration is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and our vision is to create an event like this for the U.S. market, so that car companies can bring their cars to a beautiful outdoor environment and guests can actually experience the cars.” His car passion began in native Milan, Italy, near the historic Monza F1 track; until he was 12, he lived in Great Britain,

The Huracán era: car #20,000 rolls off Automobili Lamborghini’s production line Eight-year success story through 12 road and three track versions Automobili Lamborghini announces Huracán number 20,000: an STO model in glorious Grigio Acheso Matt for a client in the Principality of Monaco. While the Huracán Super Trofeo Omologata is the pinnacle of Huracán performance in a road car with racing spirit, it heads an extended family of Huracán models that have delivered aspirated performance with characterized dynamic handling and driving emotion since its 2014 launch. “At its unveiling we said that with the Huracán, Lamborghini is writing the next chapter in its great history,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “The Huracán has delivered an evolution of design, technological know-how, driving adventures, track records and sales records since its launch. It was designed as a car to provide super sports emotion in every environment, from daily driving to thrilling performance on track. Every iteration of the Huracán has stayed true to that Lamborghini philosophy, while in motorsport the Huracán is not only the protagonist of the Lamborghini one-make Super Trofeo series but has proved its dominance in GT3 series throughout the world.” Eight years’ success since 2014 The Huracán's success has endured for eight years, an attraction maintained over time thanks to a wide range of versions: 12 road and three racing versions. Since 2014, 71% of customers have chosen the coupé versions and 29% the open-air derivatives. 2014: the first coupé version, LP 610-4 The first Huracán coupé (LP 610-4) debuted at the 2014 Geneva motor show with four-wheel drive, 610 hp, acceleration from 0-60 mph of 3.2 secs and a top speed of 201 mph. Innovations included Lamborghini ANIMA drive mode selection, on-board gyroscope LPI system, dual fuel injection and LEDs lights throughout the car: an industry first in the super sports segment. The Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder was unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015. The 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 is the same as in the coupé and develops 610 hp. The 0-60 mph sprint is covered in 3.4 seconds and the top speed is 201 mph. 2015: Huracán LP 580-2, a two-wheel drive experience Compared to the LP 610-4, it differs in that it has a lower-powered engine and rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive. It has the same 5.2-litre V10 as the 610-4 but with power reduced to 580 hp and torque of 393 lb/ft. Thanks to the absence of four-wheel drive, Lamborghini's engineers have achieved a weight saving of 72.75 lbs compared to the Huracán coupé, at just 3,062 lbs. Top speed is 199 mph. A Spyder RWD variant of the Huracán LP 580-2 was unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2016. The 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 is the same as the coupe and develops 580 hp. A 250-off, limited edition Avio model in 2016, celebrated the aviation and aeronautic inspiration in Huracán styling. 2016: the Huracán Performante debut and the Nürburgring lap record The 640 hp Huracán Performante stormed into markets in 2016: with Lamborghini’s patented ALA active aerodynamic innovations, it took the Nordschleife Nürburgring lap record for production cars and won awards around the world. In 2018, the Huracán Performante Spyder took the zenith of Huracán developments: the sublime combination of peerless technological innovation, performance and open-air driving. Like the Performante coupé, the Spyder outputs 640 hp at 8,000 rpm, producing 443 ft/lbs of torque at 6,500 rpm, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 124 mph in 9.3 seconds. The distinctive design defined the aerodynamic superiority and enhanced driving dynamics of this new model taking the 640 hp and extraordinary abilities of the Performante combined with rear-wheel steering, torque vectoring and LDVI with predictive logic. The National WWI Museum and Memorial honors those who died in a war no one today can recall from participation, and most Americans know little about the carnage, other than a smattering from high school history. For its generation, it was “The Great War” and the “War to End All Wars.” The numbers, for sure, were great: The conflict, July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918, tallied nine million combat and five million civilian deaths, from bullets and bombs, tanks and poison gas, flu and genocide. And, rather than end wars, its conclusion sparked a far worse conflagration 20 years later, with more than 60 million dead including the horrors of the Holocaust. This year, to mark Memorial Day, May 30, Highline Autos visits the museum in downtown Kansas City, Mo., where you can experience the most comprehensive “Great War” collection in the world –– more than 500,000 items. In 1920, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, then known as the Liberty Memorial, began collecting objects and documents from all nations involved in the First World War. Formed in 1918, The Liberty Memorial Association was the collecting institution and built both the Memorial and the Museum. “The collection represents an international look at the conflict

through the eyes of all nations that were participants,” says Doran Cart, senior curator. “The collection holds three vehicles used for transport as well as a U.S. battery wagon, a rolling kitchen with a wood wagon, a water wagon and a cook wagon. Also included is a motorcycle, a French Peugeot folding bicycle and three reproduction airplanes.” The Museum and Memorial opened in 1926, with 150,000 spectators turning out to listen to President Calvin Coolidge deliver the keynote remarks. The Memorial was named a National Landmark in 2004, and the current National WWI Museum and Memorial, built beneath the Liberty Memorial Tower, opened in December 2o06. Wars Move on Wheels The earliest vehicle in the museum is a Model 1909 ambulance, among the last mule-drawn ambulances designed for the United States Army before motorized vehicles superseded them. Cart discusses this and other vehicles: •French Renault FT17 Tank –– The tank’s original purpose was to serve as a mobile command center for battalions and provide machine gun cover. This was the first tank to be designed by Louis Renault, and 2,500 were ordered. It was also the first tank with a revolving turret and was armed with a machine gun or a 37-mm cannon. in large quantities in 1918. This actual tank was deployed in France and disabled by a German 7.7-cm artillery piece in the fall of 1918 just before the Armistice. The tank still has its original camouflage paint. •1918 Ford Model T Truck –– When America entered the war, the federal government placed an order for 12,000 Ford Model T Trucks for the American Expeditionary Forces. More than 5,000 arrived in November 1918. The car served many roles including carrying equipment, troops and serving as ambulances. When they came off the line, they were painted black because Henry Ford opposed American involvement in the war. Any camouflage or other paint had to be added by the Army. •1917 Harley Davidson Motorcycle –– They were first used by the Army during General Pershing’s expedition fighting Pancho Villa in 1916, during which motorcycles were

equipped with a machine gun on a side car. In WWI, 20,000plus motorcycles were used by the expeditionary forces in France. They were primarily used for reconnaissance, communications and sending wounded from the front to the hospitals. •Motorized and Animal-Drawn Ambulances –– Two ambulances are displayed in the Main Gallery of the Museum and Memorial: a 1918 Ford Model T ambulance and the Model 1909 mule drawn-ambulance. A mule-drawn ambulance was at times advantageous to motorized vehicles because it could travel where the motorized ambulances could not. In general, an ambulance could carry four stretchers of wounded. •German Zeppelin L49 Fabric Fragment –– A recent addition to the Museum and Memorial’s collection is a small fragment of fabric from the skin of a Zeppelin L49, one of only two items from a Zeppelin in the Museum’s collection.

Chronology of World War I
On the morning of Oct. 19, 1917, 13 Zeppelins, including L49, were ordered to “attack middle England. Industrial region of Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, etc.” With a crew of 19 and carrying 11,000 pounds of fuel, it set out with a payload of 4,410 pounds of bombs; 42 bombs were dropped. Following the raid, L49 was forced down in France near Bourbonne-les-Bains by French fighter planes. All crew members survived and were taken prisoner. This fabric is not currently on exhibit in the Museum and Memorial but can be found online at theworldwar.org.
