HONG KONG BALLET

One of Asia’s premier ballet companies, Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is internationally recognised as a world-class institution which represents Hong Kong’s unique character. Since its inception in 1979, HKB has evolved into a vibrant performing arts organisation with a dynamic repertoire, forward-thinking community engagement initiatives and an emphasis on excellence. Septime Webre joined HKB as its Artistic Director in July 2017.

With nearly 50 dancers from all over the globe—Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and throughout North America—HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. HKB’s repertoire includes celebrated re-stagings of the classics, neo-classical masterworks by George Balanchine, original full-lengths created for HKB and an award-winning series of ballets for young audiences. In addition, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jirˇí Kylian, Nacho Duato, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as dynamic new works by HKB’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky, Yuh Egami, as well as numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers.

With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB most recently toured throughout Europe, Mainland China and the US, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and in New York at the Joyce Theatre and the renowned Fall for Dance Festival. In addition to its performances on stage at home and abroad, HKB maintains a full schedule of community engagement initiatives throughout Hong Kong to ensure the art of ballet is accessible to all. Since its debut in 2020, the HKBALLET@HOME online channel has garnered over 2 million views, connecting with ballet lovers across the globe.

香港芭蕾舞團 ( 舞團 ) 是亞洲最優秀的芭蕾舞團之一，以展現香港獨有魅力躋身國際 舞壇，聲譽與日俱增。舞團自 1979 年以來不斷演變，現已發展成為一個朝氣蓬勃的 藝術團體，擁有豐富的劇目及具前瞻性的社區拓展計劃，精益求精。衛承天先生於 2017 年 7 月起擔任舞團的藝術總監。

This season, let us dance you a story!

We all draw inspiration, courage and strength from narratives that elevate and illuminate our lives. We hope that this season, our performances will take you on an extraordinary journey, immersing you in the exhilarating, transcendent experience of ballet.

This season features reimagined classic ballets like Cinderella, La Bayadère and The Nutcracker, the world premiere of Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon and an epic new production of Carmina Burana, produced in collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. We are thrilled to share these new dynamic stories that highlight the artistry and charisma of the company.

Kicking off 2023, the company will have its exciting U.S. tour, with Romeo+Juliet performances in New York and down the eastern seaboard. We will also be hosting the renowned American Ballet Theatre Studio Company at the WKCD Art Park during Ballet in the Park, a wonderful evening of free al fresco ballet. This outdoor event is not to be missed.

Here comes the magic spell! Hong Kong Ballet’s Septime Webre crafts a new production of Cinderella, based on an original concept and script for Ballet Classics for Children: Cinderella by Yuri Ng and Rick Lau and co-directed with Ata Wong, bringing new life to this classic fairytale! With Yung Yin Sing Lucas as narrator and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta performing Sergei Prokofiev’s well-loved music under the baton of Yip Wing-sie, how does the benevolent fairy godmother get Cinderella to the palace to attend the ball? What about the evil stepmother and ugly stepsisters? The fun-loving show is an occasion for everyone to share a laugh at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre as we ride the emotional and magical rollercoaster with Cinderella!

Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) present an exciting world premiere of The Last Song by HKB’s Choreographer-inResidence Hu Song Wei Ricky and Septime Webre’s powerful dance masterpiece Carmina Burana

Inspired by selections by J.S. Bach and Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, Hu created his new work The Last Song, which features solos by HK Phil Concertmaster Jing Wang and Principal Cello Richard Bamping. Carl Orff’s iconic Carmina Burana is a commanding interpretation of 24 medieval poems. With dances from medieval times to the present, Webre’s choreography is influenced by Orff’s bombastic music and by themes from Virginia Woolf’s novella Orlando about our eternal search for love. Striking nine-metre scaffolding surrounding the stage holds over 100 members combined HK Phil Chorus and The Hong Kong Children’s Choir, who are joined by soloists soprano Vivian Yau, tenor Ren Shengzhi and baritone Liu Tao.

Under the baton of HK Phil Resident Conductor Lio Kuokman, this epic double bill programme uniquely brings the acclaimed dancers of HKB and the worldclass musicians of the HK Phil together for a celebration of culture and artistry combining riveting music with visually arresting dance.

The Christmas Eve adventure begins at a lively party in an opulent gilded mansion where young Clara receives a special Nutcracker as a gift.

With scores of lavish costumes and an extraordinary setting, this wondrous world finds Clara and the Nutcracker on a magical journey, battling the evil Rat King’s army, travelling through a majestic bamboo forest covered in snow, encountering lively, memorable characters and the wonderous beauty of local flora and fauna, history and traditions. Experience the splendour and spectacle of this endearing annual Hong Kong classic celebrating the joy of the holidays with your loved ones!

Ancient grudges and warring families. Passion and tragedy. The iconic balcony scene. Shakespeare’s timeless tale of star-crossed lovers has captivated audiences for generations and is given a fresh and thought-provoking retelling in Septime Webre’s new Romeo + Juliet. Set in 1960s Hong Kong with designs incorporating mid-twentieth century Hong Kong street life details, this epic love story captivates with vivid dancing, complex drama, sumptuous cheongsams and iconic scenes from the tragic tale. With Webre’s original choreography accompanied by Prokofiev’s dramatic score and intense martial arts fight scenes, this brilliantly imagined adaptation is especially relevant for contemporary audiences as it fuses dance and drama against a backdrop of a world in flux.

A brilliant designer and shrewd businesswoman, firebrand Coco Chanel redefined the world of fashion and outfitted a new generation of modern women who were intelligent, ambitious and rebellious. Her iconic little black dress and bouclé jackets and skirts are now classic style staples seen all over the world. Acclaimed Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s original ballet Coco Chanel: the Life of a Fashion Icon, created for Hong Kong Ballet, celebrates the complex life of the 20 th century’s most intriguing designer with an original score by Peter Salem, elegant sets and costumes by the award-winning Jerome Kaplan and artistic collaboration by Nancy Meckler. This creative dream team is the force behind Dutch National Ballet’s Frida, based on the life of renowned artist Frida Kahlo.

The world premiere of Coco Chanel promises to be an international sensation, chronicling an almost mythical rags to riches story. Not without her share of controversy, Chanel launched a powerful fashion empire, and more than a century later, her unforgettable legacy continues to inspire.

Set to music by Ludwig Minkus, this enduring tale of palace intrigue, vengeance and redemption is considered one of the bestloved classical ballets of all time.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/23 | 2022/23 學年 | Classical Ballet Training Programme

Hong Kong Ballet is offering high-quality classical ballet training with a special syllabus developed by our world-renowned faculty and artistic staff. Our unique curriculum follows a progressive structure designed to build a solid foundation in ballet technique and to develop artistry in students of all ages.

Girls and boys are placed in class levels according to age, experience and ability. In subsequent levels, the classical programme teaches critical foundational techniques, creative artistry and dynamic performance skills in a supportive environment to develop strong, expressive dancers. Supplementary conditioning, character dances, repertoire classes and pointe classes are also offered.

HKB also has training programmes and intensives for serious young dancers. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of disciplines from HKB’s faculty, guest artists and choreographers and have exciting opportunities to perform with HKB dancers.

香港芭蕾舞團提供質素優良的古典芭蕾舞訓練，漸進式 的分級課程由我們享譽全球的藝術團隊及導師設計， 確保任何年齡的學員都能鞏固芭蕾舞技巧根基，並培育 其藝術才能。

We believe that ballet is for everyone no matter what their age or background. Our Caring Community Programmes offer inclusive ballet experiences like open dress rehearsals and special ballet workshops for senior, special needs and underserved audiences. Silver Ballet, a series of free virtual workshops, is designed to introduce ballet and classical music at a leisurely pace to senior citizens. Theatrical interpretation and live narration are provided for the hearing and visually impaired. Our popular Relaxed Performances feature toned-down production elements, ‘chill out zones’ and pre-performance workshops that give special needs audiences a full experience before the show.

Go behind the scenes of a ballet production with interactive events like the Ballet Theatre Camp, Preperformance Workshops for Children and Families, Ballet 360°, Meet-the-Artist sessions, Ballet StoryTime Art Workshops, Pre-performance Talks and Backstage Tours. Our engaging and inspiring Production Programmes provide wonderful opportunities for participants to learn about the creative process directly from HKB’s professional dancers, choreographers, designers and special guest artists. Hong Kong students can explore an incredible world of creativity and innovation through our engaging School Programmes, which include Student Matinee Shows, School Ballet Talks and the Creative Ballet in Practice Project. With guidance from teachers and the HKB team, students gain more insight into various elements of a professional ballet production. HKB’s ultimate goal is to nurture the next generation of ballet fans and increase greater appreciation for the arts at a young age.
