Kitri 琪蒂

Summer, Barcelona; a festive mood is in the air. Kitri, daughter of Lorenzo the innkeeper, is flirting with Basilio the barber, who is in love with her. Finding them together, Lorenzo chases Basilio away: he is not prestigious enough for his daughter. Lorenzo wants Kitri to marry Gamache, a rich nobleman. The spirited Kitri refuses to submit to her father.

D o n Q u i xote a p p e a r s in t h e s q u a re, accompanied by his sword bearer Sancho Panza. Don Quixote mistakes Lorenzo for the owner of a castle and greets him with great respect. Lorenzo then invites Don Quixote to the inn, and Sancho Panza is left in the square.

When young locals tease him, Don Quixote hurries to his rescue.

SCENE I

第一場

Don Quixote, Sancho, Lorenzo and Gamache arrive at a sprawling gypsy camp looking for Kitri and Basilio while the gypsies dance and play music. Kitri and Basilio appear and ask the gypsies to hide them. Don Quixote mistakes them for enemies and rushes at the gypsies with a spear, gallantly defending those who need his protection. Then he mistakes the nearby windmills for evil magicians, and the windmill sails get caught on his armour, lifting him into the air and then dropping him to the ground. 在沙土上的風車陣中，唐吉訶德、桑丘．潘薩、羅 倫佐和甘馬察先後來到吉卜賽人龐大的營地；他 們都在尋找琪蒂和巴西里奧。吉卜賽人以舞蹈來 迎接。一對戀人出現，他們拜托吉普賽人幫忙躲 避。唐吉訶德把吉卜賽人當作敵人，竟拿著一枝 長矛攻擊吉卜賽人以保衛朋友。他還把風車當成 邪惡的魔術師，遂要和風車博鬥，最後被風車扇 葉 飛到半空再摔倒地上。

The wounded Don Quixote and Sancho Panza find themselves in a forest where Don Quixote mistakenly sees monsters and giants. Sancho settles him down to sleep and goes to get help. Dreaming, Don Quixote sees Dulcinea, “the lady who has won his heart”, surrounded by dryads and cupids. Sancho returns with Lorenzo and Gamache, and they continue their journey together. 受傷的唐吉訶德和桑丘．潘薩走到森林，唐吉訶 德以為森林裡都是猛獸和巨人。桑丘．潘薩就哄 唐吉訶德入睡，好讓他尋找幫忙。在夢中，唐吉 訶德看到他的夢中情人達辛妮亞，與一班森林精 靈和愛神共舞。桑丘．潘薩找得羅倫佐和甘馬察 回來，把唐吉訶德喚醒，並繼續他們的旅程。

When they discover Kitri and Basilio hiding in a tavern, Lorenzo wishes to announce Kitri and Gamache’s betrothal. Basilio pretends to kill himself, and Kitri sobs over the “body” of her love. Don Quixote accuses Lorenzo of hardheartedness, threatening him until he agrees to Kitri marrying Basilio. Basilio jumps to his feet in delight, and Lorenzo invites everyone to the wedding. 羅 倫佐、甘馬察和唐吉 訶德發現 躲在一間旅館 中的琪蒂和巴西里奧。羅 倫佐 急著要宣布琪蒂 和甘馬察 訂婚；但事先 和琪蒂約定的巴西里 奧 竟扮作殤 情自殺。琪蒂傷心地伏在 愛 人 屍體 旁 哭 泣，叫肝 膽 俠 義 的唐 吉 訶德 於心 不忍。唐 吉 訶德 指 責羅 倫佐 鐵石心 腸，並以長矛要脅羅 倫 佐同意琪蒂和巴西里奧之間的婚約。羅 倫佐妥 協。巴西里 奧立刻 死 而復 生。羅 倫佐 邀 請 大家 一同出席婚禮。

Born in France, Marius Petipa was a dancer, ballet master and choreographer. He spent most of his career in the city in St Petersburg, arriving in 1847 as a Principal Dancer with the Russian Imperial Ballet before becoming ballet master at the company. Marius Petipa is recognised as one of the most influential and prolific choreographers in the history of ballet. In addition to creating more than 50 ballets including La Bayadère and The Sleeping Beauty, Petipa also revived a number of works by other choreographers such as Swan Lake, Coppélia, Giselle and La Fille Mal Gardée.

Alexander Gorsky was a Russian choreographer and a contemporary of Marius Petipa. Gorsky choreographed, restaged, and revived many ballets, but is perhaps best known for restaging Petipa’s classical ballets such as Swan Lake, Don Quixote, and The Nutcracker. Speaking of his version of Don Quixote, premièred in Moscow in 1900, Gorsky said “The distinction of my production is that there is a continuous movement of groups on the stage; the scenes are based on a plan new and original with me; I do not recognise any rules of symmetry.” Gorsky is considered a pioneer of realism in ballet; he valued naturalistic acting over bravura techniques, and fluidity over the stiff poses that were popular in his day.

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Nina Ananiashvili joined the Bolshoi Ballet in 1981, was a prima ballerina there, became an American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer and also danced with The Royal Ballet, Houston Ballet, La Scala Ballet and Metropolitan Opera. In 2004, she became Director of the State Ballet of Georgia. Her accolades include People’s Artist of Georgia and of the Russian Federation, Georgian Order of Honor, Georgian Order of Excellence and Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity.

Additionally, Ananiashvili received the Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2017 and became Honorary President of Europa Nostra Georgia in 2019.

Composer, violin virtuoso and teacher Ludwig Minkus was born in Vienna, Austria. He worked extensively with Arthur Saint-Léon and Marius Petipa on numerous original works and revivals. After Don Quixote’s huge success, he was appointed Ballet Composer for the St Petersburg Imperial Theatres and held the post during 18711886. Minkus composed full ballet scores for La Source, La Bayadère and Don Quixote and also had a substantial amount of supplemental material for existing ballets like Giselle. He is also noted for Grand Pas Classique, Pas de Trois and Mazurka des Enfants in Petipa’s 1881 revival of Paquita.

German-born Thomas Mika is one of the most highly regarded set and costume designers for modern and classical ballet productions worldwide, collaborating with a host of renowned choreographers and international companies.

In the classical repertoire, his notable designs include John Cranko’s Onegin and Romeo and Juliet, Derek Deane’s Lady of the Camellias, Don Quixote

by Aleksei Fadeechev and a version by Nina Ananiashvili, Ben van Cauwenbergh’s Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake by Eno Peci and Sabrina Sadowska.

Most recently, he directed Franz Lehár’s The Count of Luxemburg for the Estonian National Opera in 2020.

Billy Chan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a major in theatre lighting design. Since 1997, Chan has collaborated with ELDT, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre, choreographer Duncan Macfarland and Taiyuan Dance Troupe, Macao Cultural Centre and Trinity Theatre, in addition to pop concerts. He won Best Stage Art of the Year (Lighting Design) at the 2017 Shanghai Jing’an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards. In April 2019, he was awarded Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for Chung Ying Theatre Company’s Rashomon and Outstanding Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Dance Awards for Hong Kong Dance Company’s Waiting Heart.

顏菁 Judith Yan is a Canadian conductor with ro ots in Hong Kong . Equally ade pt at ballet, operatic, and symphonic repertoire, her career has taken her internationally, conducting for major companies in Europe, Asia, and Nor th America. She has held Staff Conductor positions at San Francisco Opera, Canadian Opera Company and The National Ballet of Canada. For Hong Kong Ballet, she has conducted several productions including The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote. Recent performances include the critically acclaimed world premieres of Perla’s An American Dream (Seattle Opera), Estacio’s Ours (Opera on the Avalon) and Pastor’s Dracula (West Australian Ballet). With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB most recently toured throughout Europe in 2018, across Mainland China in 2019 and in recent seasons to the US, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and in New York at the Joyce Theatre and the renowned Fall for Dance Festival. In addition to its performances on stage at home and abroad, HKB maintains a full schedule of community engagement initiatives throughout Hong Kong to ensure the art of ballet is accessible to all.

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate.

He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US from 1999-2016. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US from 1993-1999. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation, launching an annual international Festival for Creativity in Washington DC in June 2018.

During Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet, the institution’s budget grew by 500%, and it enjoyed unprecedented advances in the scope and quality of its work on stage, in the size and reach of its professional school, and in the development of several far-reaching community engagement programmes, which he founded. Webre launched an array of artistic initiatives including The American Experience, which developed great works of literature into full-length ballets, including The Great Gatsby and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises among others.

As a choreographer, Webre’s works appear in the repertoires of ballet companies throughout North America, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Colorado Ballet, Ballet West, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Austin, Ballet Memphis, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, and many others, and he has worked frequently in theatre as well as opera. As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham.

He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.
