SERENADE

《小夜曲》

A timeless, exquisite work from the father of American ballet filled with romance, drama and passion.

Set to a transcendent Tchaikovsky score, Serenade was George Balanchine’s first ballet choreographed in the US and is one of his most popular, widely danced works. Technically and artistically demanding, Balanchine revised it more extensively than any of his other works from its 1936 premiere until 1976, and today it has four timeless movements: ‘Sonatina,’ ‘Waltz,’ ‘Russian Dance’ and ‘Elegy’.

Romantic yet revolutionary, Serenade has no story, princes or fairy tales. Martha Graham describes it as ‘simplicity itself, but the simplicity of a very great master.’ Balanchine wanted to show his students that performing is more complex than taking class. In each class he worked with whoever was there, adding men when some showed up and including mishaps like a latecomer and an accidental fall. The passionate Serenade is a prime example of his ‘use what you’ve got’ philosophy.

《小夜曲》是當代編舞大師巴蘭欽移居美國後 所編的首齣芭蕾，也是他最廣為人知及最常被 搬演的舞作之一，在技巧及藝術上都有極高要 求。從 1936 年首演至1976 年間，巴蘭欽多次修 改舞作，調整幅度遠比他其他作品要多。

整部作品滿載浪漫氣氛，亦極具破舊立新的意 味。舞作起用柴可夫斯基的悅耳音樂，共分為 四個部分：〈小奏鳴曲〉、〈華爾茲〉、〈俄羅斯舞 曲〉及〈哀歌〉。著名舞蹈家葛蘭姆（ Martha Graham ）形容作品是「一份出自大師之手的簡 樸」。巴蘭欽希望藉此向他的學生說明，上台表 演遠比上舞蹈課要複雜得多。巴蘭欽教舞蹈課 時，哪個學生來上課，他就教誰，而學生遲到、 摔倒或突然現身都被他當成是編舞素材，《小 夜曲》便正好展現了他這種盡用現場所有素材 編舞的巧思。

IN THE MIDDLE, SOMEWHAT ELEVATED 《多少懸在半空中》

Originally created for the Paris Opera Ballet, In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated is a theme and variations in the strictest sense. Making use of academic virtuosity, it extends and accelerates these traditional figures of classical ballet. By shifting the alignment of positions and the emphasis of transitions, the enchainments begin to tilt obliquely and receive an unexpected drive that makes them appear at odds with their own origins.

原為巴黎歌劇院芭蕾舞團創作的《多少懸在半 空中》，嚴格來說是一種「主題與變奏」。舞作 利用學院派的技巧，推展了古典芭蕾的傳統肢 體形態。透過改變位置的排列及過渡動作的 輕重，連串舞步漸漸偏離原軌，看來與本來的 動作格格不入，帶來意想不到的效果。

Depeche Mode’s music has been a profound source of inspiration for me, igniting a deep emotional connection that transcends time. As a dancer and choreographer, I found myself drawn to their powerful and evocative lyrics, which resonated with my teenage references and experiences. The raw, emotional themes in their songs, often exploring the complexities of human relationships and the human condition, struck a chord with me.

The band’s unique blend of dark and atmospheric electronic sounds, coupled with their strong lyrics, provided the perfect backdrop for my creative vision. The sense of musicality in their compositions seamlessly intertwined with my dance style, allowing me to craft a ballet that was both visually and emotionally captivating.

My new ballet for the Hong Kong Ballet became a testament to the transformative power of music and dance, where Depeche Mode's music served as the emotional compass guiding the movements and expressions on stage. The result was a performance that not only paid homage to my teenage references but also introduced this iconic music to a new audience, creating a powerful and unforgettable experience for both dancers and spectators alike.

Depeche Mode 的音樂蘊含一種超越時間、深入心坎 的情感連繫，一直為我帶來極大啟發。樂團的作品探討 人各種複雜的關係和狀態，情感粗獷又動人，深深打動 我心。充滿力量和想像空間的歌詞，與我青少年時期的 種種經歷及事物產生共鳴，迷倒身為舞者及編舞的我。

樂團氛圍獨特的暗黑電音風格，加上令人印象深刻的歌 詞，為我提供完美的創作背景。他們的樂曲有一種獨特 的樂感，與我的舞蹈風格融合得天衣無縫，讓我創作出 一部在視覺和情感上都引人入勝的芭蕾。

這次為香港芭蕾舞團編排的新作，見證了音樂及舞蹈 的強大力量，Depeche Mode 的音樂在當中有如一盞 情感上的明燈，為舞台動作及肢體表現指引路向。透過 這次演出，我除了向自己的年輕歲月致敬之外，也將樂 團的經典音樂推介給新一代觀眾，為舞者及觀眾帶來 一場難忘的體驗。

© The George Balanchine Trust George Balanchine is regarded as the foremost contemporary choreographer in the world of ballet. Born in St Petersburg, Balanchine had both the music and dance of Russia in his blood. Extensive musical training put him on equal grounds in communicating with great composers and enabled him to reduce orchestral scores on the piano, an invaluable aid in translating music into dance. Balanchine’s style has been described as neo-classical, de-emphasising plot in ballets and preferring to let ‘dance be the star of the show’. In his lifetime, he created 465 works, including Serenade, one of his most renowned pieces.

喬治．巴蘭欽被譽為是芭蕾舞界最傑 出的當代編舞大師。生於聖彼德堡 的巴蘭欽有着音樂與舞蹈的天賦， 憑着對音樂的豐富知識，巴蘭欽能 與作曲家緊密溝通，亦能將管弦樂 譜簡化成琴譜，有助將音樂轉化為 舞蹈。巴蘭欽的編舞風格被稱為新 古典派，作品沒有故事性，強調「舞 蹈本身是演出的靈魂」。他一生共創 作了465 部作品，包括《小夜曲》這 經典作品。

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is widely considered one of the most popular Russian composers in history. From a young age he demonstrated an incredible skill for melodic expression of strong emotions, which contributed to his creation of symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets and more. His masterpieces for theatre works include the opera Eugene Onegin and the ballets The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. The beautiful intensity of Tchaikovsky's music in his works has revered him among generations of music lovers.

柴可夫斯基是史上最受歡迎的俄羅 斯作曲家之一。他自少展現非凡的音 樂才華，擅長創作優美的旋律以表達 強烈的情感，作品種類涵蓋交響曲、 協奏曲、歌劇、芭蕾舞等。著名的作 品包括歌劇《尤金．奧涅金》和芭蕾 舞《胡桃夾子》、《睡美人》及《天鵝 湖》。柴可夫斯基的音樂歷久常新， 廣受古今樂迷尊崇。

Darla HOOVER 黛拉．胡佛 Stager 排演

Darla Hoover started her ballet training at age 6 at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB). At Balanchine’s invitation in 1980, she joined New York City Ballet where she danced for 12 years. Hoover was named CPYB’s Artistic Director in 2019 and School of American Ballet’s 2022-2023 Chair of Faculty. Her notable accolades include receiving the Marcia Dale Weary Legacy Award and Congressional Commendation for outstanding achievement in New York’s 12th Congressional District. A The George Balanchine Trust repetiteur since 1996, Hoover stages Balanchine works for leading dance companies in the US and around the world.

Currently Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra and Programme Director of the Macao International Music Festival, Lio Kuokman was praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “a startling conducting talent”, and he has served as the first Chinese Assistant Conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Educated at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, The Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory, Lio is a founding member and President of the Macao Chamber Music Association.

廖國敏現為香港管弦樂團駐團指 揮、澳門樂團音樂總監兼首席指揮 及澳門國際音樂節節目總監，曾獲 美國《費城詢問報》譽為「令人矚目 的指揮奇才」，並獲美國費城交響樂 團委任為助理指揮，為該團史上首 位華人助理指揮。

廖國敏畢業於香港演藝學院，再赴 美國入讀紐約茱莉亞音樂學院、費 城寇蒂斯音樂學院、波士頓新英格 蘭音樂學院深造。他為澳門室內樂 協會的創會主席。

Gian Carlo Perez, a First Soloist at Houston Ballet, brings a wealth of experience from his early training in Havana, Cuba and boasts an impressive career at Ballet Nacional de Cuba and The Washington Ballet. His extensive repertoire includes iconic roles like Oberon in Sir Frederick Ashton’s The Dream and the titular roles in George Balanchine’s Apollo and Othello. His notable performance in Balanchine’s Themes and Variations at The Washington Ballet stands out as one of his defining moments. Perez’s unwavering focus and commitment to excellence have earned him international recognition, including the prestigious 2017 Princess Grace Fellowship in Dance.

A graduate of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and Queensland University of Technology, Mak Kwok Fai worked as a HKAPA Lighting Lecturer during 20002018. Over the years, he has collaborated on various artistic projects worldwide and designed lighting systems for shopping malls, commercial buildings and performance venues. His designs in Hong Kong Ballet’s Shenren Chang (Harmony between Gods and Men), The Rite of Spring and The Last Song were nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 2017, 2020 and 2022 Hong Kong Dance Awards, respectively. His most recent works include 13.67 (Singapore, Chinese Festival of Arts) and Interrupted Dream (Novi Sad, 3 Fest).

麥國輝先後畢業於香港演藝學院和 澳洲昆士蘭科技大學。2000-2018 年間回母校香港演藝學院任職舞台 燈光講師，多年來和各地商業及文 化演藝單位合作，並參與商場、商廈 和表演場地燈光系統設計和顧問工 作。憑香港芭蕾舞團《神人暢》、《春 之祭》和《最後的歌》三度入圍香港 舞蹈年奬「最佳視覺效果」。近作有 於新加坡華藝節《13.67 》及諾維蕯德 3 Fest《驚夢》。

William Forsythe (1949) has been active in the field of choreography for over 50 years. His three decades of work with his ensembles Ballet Frankfurt and The Forsythe Company in Frankfurt, Germany exerted significant influence upon generations of artists in a wide array of creative practices. With an initial focus on the organizational underpinnings of academic ballet since 1991, Forsythe has extended his choreographic discourse into the field of visual arts. While his work for the stage resides in the repertories of ensembles worldwide, his installations are featured in international exhibitions and museums. Forsythe has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale and Der Faust for lifetime achievement.

Thom WILLEMS

Dutch composer Thom Willems creates inspiring music predominately for ballet. His scores are characterised by subtle soundscapes, insistent rhythms and urban sonorities, forming an intrinsic part of the architecture of the ballets. Since 1985 he and choreographer William Forsythe have created over 60 works for Ballett Frankfurt and The Forsythe Company. Willems’ music is used in many of Forsythe's celebrated works like In the Middle Somewhat Elevated (1987), The Loss of Small Detail (1991) and the short film ‘Solo’. Willems’ music in Forsythe’s works is featured in the repertoire of virtually every major ballet company in the world, including New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Teatro alla Scala Milano and Royal Ballet Covent Garden, among others.

Thierry GUIDERDONI 蒂埃里．吉迪東尼 Stager 排演

Born in Nice, France, Thierry Guiderdoni was educated at the Academie de Danse Princesse Grace in Monte Carlo under the direction of Marika Besobrasova. In 1982, he won the Professional Prize at Prix de Lausanne and joined The Stuttgart Ballet the same year. From 1991 to 2004 he was a member of Frankfurt Ballet. In 2005, he was appointed Ballet Master and Artistic Assistant to William Forsythe and also became his Agenda Manager at The Forsythe Company. Guiderdoni is currently a freelance stager and rehearsal director at The Forsythe Productions.

Greek-born choreographer

Andonis Foniadakis began his career as a dancer with the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon (1996-2002), where he worked with leading choreographers like Maguy Marin and William Forsythe, among others. In 2003, he founded his company Apotosoma and has choreographed for many international companies. From 2016 to 2018 he was Greek National Ballet’s Artistic Director. Foniadakis has choreographed three French operas, collaborated with American filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and worked with Palais de Tokyo in Paris. His notable accolades include the Danza Award for Best Choreography and Best Production Award from the Greek Critic’s Union of Music and Theatre.

Anastasios SOFRONIOU 安拿達西奧．索夫尼歐 Costume Design 服裝設計

German-born, Paris-based Greek costume designer and fashion entrepreneur Anastasios Sofroniou began his professional career in fashion as a teenager, while completing his studies in History of Fashion and Graphic Design. After a successful career as a fashion editor in Athens and London, he worked with famous fashion icons, renowned photographers, diverse publications like The Face, British GQ, Greek Elle and brands like Alexander McQueen and Diesel. Since 2011, he has been collaborating with contemporary dance companies and operas such as Martha Graham NYC, Philadelphia Dance Ballet, Geneva Opera, Sydney Dance Company, CCN Ballet De Laurenne and many of Andonis Foniadakis’ productions. This is Sofroniou's first collaboration with Hong Kong Ballet.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is regarded as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. Professionalised in 1974, the orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary during the 2023/24 season. Collaborating with internationally renowned conductors and soloists, the orchestra presents more than 150 concerts and attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually. The HK Phil promotes the work of Hong Kong and Chinese composers, commissions new works, nurtures local talent and runs extensive education and community programmes. With Music Director Jaap van Zweden since 2012, the HK Phil has toured Europe, Asia, Australia and extensively across Mainland China. Long Yu has been Principal Guest Conductor since the 2015/16 season, and Lio Kuokman was appointed Resident Conductor in December 2020. As the performing arts in Hong Kong have flourished incessantly in recent years, the demand for talents in the field is increasing continuously. With the objective of nurturing students with musical talents to become a new generation of performing artists, the School of Music from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) has prepared an ideal learning environment for students, providing them with all-round training in performing arts and equipping students with the capability for entrepreneurship and the attributes of cultural leaders. Within the HKAPA’s School of Music, orchestral training is a significant part of the students’ education. All students of orchestral instruments participate in the Academy Symphony Orchestra, whose weekly rehearsals cover the standard symphonic literature as well as contemporary works. Academy Symphony Orchestra not only has extensive performance experience locally but also learns and collaborates with numerous internationally renowned orchestras and conductors.

隨著近年香港表演藝術行業的不斷擴展，香港 對人才的需求亦不斷增加。香港演藝學院音樂 學院為學生預備了理想的學習環境，提供全面 的演藝訓練，同時裝備學生具備創業能力及文 化領袖特質，致力培育具有音樂天賦的學生， 成為新一代表演藝術家。

One of Asia’s premier ballet companies, Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is internationally recognised as a worldclass institution which represents Hong Kong’s unique character. Septime Webre joined HKB as its Artistic Director in July 2017.

With nearly 50 dancers from all over the globe –Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and throughout North America – HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. HKB’s repertoire includes celebrated re-stagings of the classics, neo-classical masterworks by George Balanchine, original full-lengths created for HKB and an award-winning series of ballets for young audiences. In addition, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jiři Kylian, Nacho Duato, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as dynamic new works by HKB’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky, Yuh Egami, as well as numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers.

With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB most recently toured throughout Europe, Mainland China and the US, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and in New York at the Joyce Theatre, New York City Center and the renowned Fall for Dance Festival. In addition to its performances on stage at home and abroad, HKB maintains a full schedule of community engagement initiatives throughout Hong Kong to ensure the art of ballet is accessible to all. HKB has also produced original videos and dance films that have collectively garnered over 5.2 million views online, connecting with ballet lovers worldwide.

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.

Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work—both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre recently staged a pair of new productions for HKB: a Romeo + Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. In addition, he has staged a number of additional productions for HKB, including new productions of Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , The Great Gatsby and Peter Pan

As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.

衛承天是國際著名芭蕾舞團總監、 編舞家、教育家及倡導者。他曾 出任華盛頓芭蕾舞團藝術總監達 17 年，亦曾任美國新澤西普林斯 頓美國劇目芭蕾舞團藝術總監， 並於 2017 年 7 月加入香港芭蕾舞 團擔任藝術總監。他曾是美國華 盛頓一基金會 Halcyon 的藝術總 監，其宗旨為透過創意影響社會。

衛承天在任華盛頓芭蕾舞團期間， 舞團預算大增 500%，並在舞台製 作的規模和質素、專業舞蹈教學等 多個範疇上獲得前所未有的提升。 他近年為香港芭蕾舞團全新創作 包括：以 1960 年代香港作背景的 《羅密歐+茱麗葉》和以 20 世紀初 香港作背景的《胡桃夾子》。衛承 天亦曾為香港芭蕾舞團製作《吉賽 爾》、《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》、《大亨 小傳》和《小飛俠》等多個舞目。
