If this club is to make a fourth straight trip to the championship game, it will do so with a team much younger on the whole than previous Mass West outfits.

Returning as coach will be Kevin Kervick. The squad will definitely have a Pope Francis flavor. The Cardinals were the top HS team in Massachusetts in the abbreviated past winter season.

Up front, juniors JoshIby and RyanO’Leary were offensive contributors to the powerhouse Pope Francis attack. The same goes for senior Jack Moltenbrey, who is ready to be much more involved for the Cardinals this upcoming year.

Bringing his experience and talent from Connecticut is senior Bobby Lachance, coming off an impressive junior year at Northwest Catholic.

Junior Sean O’Leary, Ryan’s brother, looks to have an impact in the upcoming season. Same goes for Matt Muirhead, who looks forward to playing this summer at Pomfret School in the prep ranks.

No less than a quartet of sophomores dot the Mass West roster at forward. All are primed and ready to to step it up this winter for the Cardinals varsity.

The group includes Maurice Kearney (Wilbraham), Ryan Gokey (Feeding Hills), Jacob Petrin (Greenfield) and Derek Rhodes (Ludlow).

On defense, the leader will be junior Jack Kennedy (10 pts), coming off a solid year with Pope Francis and taking his blue line talents to prep power Avon Old Farms in the fall. Senior Wade Wegrzyn will be a vital presence in front of the net.

Xavier HS (CT) rock Ryan Drust will be a key contributor for Mass West in the defensive zone. Junior Colin Foyle is ready for a bigger defensive role this winter at Pope Francis
