En el video hecho público hoy, Hillary Clinton anunció que se postulaba a la presidencia de los Estados Unidos. Después de este anuncio habrá el anuncio de Gobernador Jeb Bush quien también anunciara su candidatura para el presidente. Ambos están considerados líderes de sus partidos respectivos. Hay otros que ya anunciaron sus intenciones y habrá todavía más personas que harán lo mismo. Desafortunadamente, muchos cambiaron sus posiciones para ganar favor con los bordes extremos del espectro político, no decidiendo la política en el nombre del interés de la nación o por principio sino canjeando el mejor interés de la nación por los votos de las elecciones primarias. Mientras que esas campañas se enfocan en cuestiones polémicas, el tema de reforma migratoria va estar al principio de su lista de puntos de discusión. El extremo del lado republicano continuará incriminando a los inmigrantes indocumentados como transgresores, vendedores de drogas e insistirán que ellos drenan la economía de nuestra nación, sabiendo que esas declaraciones son fal-
sas. El lado demócrata va a discutir que ellos son el único partido que está luchando por la justicia y oportunidad para todos los inmigrantes. Tomando esto en cuenta, cuando los demócratas tuvieron la Casa Blanca, la Cámara de los Representantes y el Senado al principio del término del actual Presidente, y a pesar de numerosas promesas, legislación de la reforma migratoria nunca fue presentada para el voto. Por esta razón, yo animo a toda la gente que esta temporada de campañas hagamos responsables por sus posiciones y comentarios a todos ellos quienes buscan su voto. No vamos a esperar que nuestros líderes elegidos tengan carácter fuerte y sigan sus posiciones a pesar de las contribuciones a la campaña. Vamos a votar por la mejor persona para la posición, y no mejor personalidad para el partido. Una vez más vamos a escoger nuestras familias y comunidades antes de los partidos políticos. Esta no debe de ser noble idea. Se calcula que más de $5 billones de dólares serán gastados entre
candidatos, partidos e intereses secundarios en la elección presidencial del 2016. Primero familia y comunidad… Votar por el mejor candidato…Poner mis intereses antes de los intereses del partido. Muchos llamarían esto “pensamientos revolucionarios.” Una vez más gracias por su apoyo generoso. Sé que juntos podemos y lo haremos mejor. Meet the Glenview Middle School Youth Mariachi Band By Anastassia Zvoryguina
Music speaks every language in the world. Music erases borders uniting people. Also, music is one of the best ambassadors in the world. In the United States most of schools have musical bands, but only few offer Mariachi bands to their students. Glenview Middle School of East Moline, IL is one of these schools. Almost everyone knows that Mariachi is a form of folk music from Mexico. Typical instruments played by the Mariachi band members are violin, guitarrón, guitarra de golpe, guitar, trumpet, vihuela and sometimes harp and accordion. It is believed that at the end of the1800s this type of music was usually played at weddings. Mariachi is a beautiful music that is one of the great representations of Mexican culture. Abel Zertuche, community leader and founder of the band, came up with idea of Mariachi band a couple of years ago. Mr. Zertuche explained that once he needed a Mariachi band and he had to bring one from Chicago, since then he entertained
an idea of having something like this available here in the Quad Cities. Finally he talked to Margarita Mojica, teacher from Glenview Middle School. She liked the idea and together they asked Rich Clark, Glenview’s music teacher, if he wanted to take on this project. Sometime later GMS Youth Mariachi Band came to existence. “It’s our music. It’s in our blood and it’s our culture,” Mr. Zertuche explained his passion for the creation of the Mariachi Band. Rich Clark, director of Glenview Middle School Youth Mariachi Band (GMS Youth Mariachi Band), explained, “30.7% of the Glenview Middle School student population is Latino. Some of these students have a love for music, but many not be interested in participating in the traditional band program. To meet the needs of these students, the GMS Youth Mariachi Band was formed.” Unlike a regular band students in GMS Youth Mariachi Band not only learn to play instruments and perform in front of public, but they also learn about Maria-
chi and its cultural background. “Students involved in this program learn to play violin, trumpet and guitar. Along with learning how to play instruments, students learn some of the various Mariachi styles, such as the waltz, ranchera and pasodoble,” Mr. Clark explained. One of the best things about GMS Mariachi Band is that any GMS student from 5-8 grades can participate in the band. Also, it does not matter whether the student has experience with musical instruments or knows nothing about how to play one, as long as the student loves music and has desire to learn to play an instrument he/she is welcome to take part in the GMS Youth Mariachi Band. According to Mr. Clark there are three steps to sign up for the Youth Mariachi Band. All students interested in participating first of all have to attend an informational meeting after school. After this, parents have to come to an informational meeting as well. The parents’ meeting is in the evening and they will receive detailed information about the Mariachi band. After these two meetings the students who decided seriously to pursue their involvement in the band will have an individual appointment and during this meeting a student and a parent will
sign up for this program. Students have to provide their own instrument. Those who do not own any instruments can rent one through a special rent to own program through West Music located in Moline. Mr. Clark told us that currently 19 students participate in the GMS Youth Mariachi Band. Usually lessons and rehearsals begin at the second half of September. Starting next year older students will have their regular Mariachi Band period, while new members will meet after school. No matter where you are from, music is a beautiful way to communicate with others. Learning to communicate through music is not just know how to play an instrument, but also, it means to know about the music that you are playing and more than anything one has to love the music he/she is playing. That is why more than anything members of the GMS Youth Mariachi Band are ambassadors of the Mexican culture who spread the beauty of traditions through music. La Banda de Mariachi Juvenil de la Escuela Glenview de East Moline Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Música habla todos los idiomas del mundo. Música borra fronteras uniendo personas. También, música es uno de los mejores embajadores al mundo. En los estados Unidos muchas escuelas tienen bandas musicales, pero solo pocas de ellas ofrecen la oportunidad de participar en una banda de Mariachi a sus estudiantes. La escuela secundaria Glenview
de East Moline es una de estas escuelas. Casi todo el mundo sabe que la música de Mariachi es tradicional de México. Una banda de Mariachi consiste de los siguientes instrumentos: violín, guitarrón, guitarra de golpe, guitarra, trompeta, vihuela y a veces harpa y acordeón. Se cree que a los finales de los años 1800 este tipo de música se tocaba en las bodas, Mariachi es música hermosa que también es una de las buenas representa-
ciones de la cultura mexicana. Abel Zertuche, líder comunitario y fundador de la banda, tuvo la idea de crear una banda de Mariachi juvenil hace unos cuantos años. El Sr. Zertuche explicó que hubo el momento que él necesitó un Mariachi y tuvo que traer una banda desde Chicago, desde entonces él pensaba que sería maravilloso tener algo así aquí en los Quad Cities. Finalmente, él habló con Margarita Mojica, maestra de
la secundaria Glenview. A ella le encantó esta idea y juntos ellos hablaron con Rich Clark, el maestro de música de la escuela, preguntándole si él deseaba ser parte de este proyecto. no importa si el estudiante tiene alguna experiencia con el instrumento musical o si él/ella sabe nada sobre como se toca un instrumento, siempre y cuando al estudiante le guste la música y tenga el deseo de aprender a tocar un instrumento entonces ellos están bienvenidos a participar en el GMS Banda de Mariachi. Según el Sr. Clark hay tres pasos para inscribirse en la Banda de Mariachi. Todos los estudiantes interesados en participar antes que nada tienen que asistir a una junta informativa después de escuela. Los padres del estudiante también deben de atender una junta informativa. Las juntas informativas son en las tardes y allí se da información detallada sobre la Banda de Mariachi. Después de las juntas informativas, los estudiantes que decidan participar en la banda seriamente tendrán una junta individual donde ellos, junto con sus padres, podrán firmar los papeles necesarios. Los estudiantes deben de traer su propio instrumento. Aquellos quienes no tienen instrumentos musicales pueden alquilar su instrumento por medio del programa de la tienda de instrumentos musicales West Music “alquiler con derecho de comprar
después”. West Music está ubicada en Moline. El Sr. Clark dijo que actualmente 19 estudiantes participan en la GMS Banda de Mariachi. Por lo regular clases y ensayos empiezan a los finales del septiembre. Para el próximo año los estudiantes mayores tendrán periodo de Banda de Mariachi regular mientras que miembros nuevos se juntarán después de escuela. No importa de donde viene uno porque la música es una manera hermosa de comunicarse con otros. Aprender a comunicarse por medio de la música no es solamente saber tocar un instrumento sino también significa conocer bien sobre la música que uno toca y más que nada amar la música que uno toca. Por eso los miembros de la GMS Banda de Mariachi son embajadores de la cultura mexicana quienes comparten las hermosas tradiciones por medio de la música. New Style’s Miguel Rosas to be featured on Cedric’s Barber Battle TV show By John Marx Courtesy of the Dispatch MOLINE -- The television-watching world is about to get a taste of the talented Miguel Rosas. Mr. Rosas, a Rock Island native and longtime owner of NewStyle Barber Shop, 101 5th Ave., Moline,
is one of the barbering stars who will be featured in “Cedric’s Barber Battle,” a new reality-TV competition hosted by actor and comedian Cedric the Entertainer. The first installment of the 10-episode series will air at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, locally on the CW Network.
“Cedric’s Barber Battle’’ sets out to capture the unique culture in barbering communities across the country, aiming to showcase craftsmanship blended with comedy in shops across America. The series, which was filmed last summer, pits barbers going head to head in an unfiltered, no-holds-

barred arena. They were challenged to create hair sculptures featuring elaborate designs, ranging from images of a person’s face to amazing cityscapes. The barbers used only clippers and a few coloring tools to create intricate works of art. A press release from the CW says episodes contain two challenges: a “buzz-cut” challenge, set inside an iconic barbershop, and an outdoor “cut-down” challenge, located at a regional landmark in each city. At the end of each episode, a champion is crowned. Mr. Rosas’ rise to worldwide acclaim began in July 2014 when he cleverly -- and with a free hand -cut a likeness of Col. Harlan Sanders, of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, into the hair of an associate’s son. The image went viral, and news outlets from across the globe sought out Mr. Rosas. “The person who pitched the show to the CW knows me, and he encouraged me to seek the producers and follow their application process,’’ said Mr. Rosas, who holds many national titles for his work. “I also had a friend help me with my video presentation, and I had a lengthy phone interview with producers. I’m glad they saw something they liked and allowed me the chance they did.’’
The show’s producers refuse to allow Mr. Rosas to divulge much about what happened while filming, where the show was shot, and his salary. “I can tell it was shot last summer, and that I represent Chicago -- it was geared to major cities -- and I had a great time doing it,’’ Mr. Rosas said. “There are some things I don’t know.’’ What Mr. Rosas does know for sure is that Cedric the Entertainer is what you see on the big and small screen -- a wonderful, funny man. “Great man with a great, great sense of humor,’’ Mr. Rosas said. ‘’He has tremendous (comedic) timing and great energy. During breaks, he busted us all up making jokes. What really was cool was that Cedric had an assistant -- because it was hot and there was makeup involved -- who followed him around with a hand-held fan to keep him cool.’’ Already a viral sensation with his work, Mr. Rosas hopes his work on the show expands his network. “I’d love to have representation to get my name out there,’’ Mr. Rosas said. “It’s always been a goal to be that guy that gets a call to fly in and do some big star’s hair. It would be great if this opened that door.’’

La primera temporada de 10 episodios se empezara a transmitir este viernes 17 de abril a las 7:00 PM por la cadena CW. “Cedric’s Barber Battle” busca captar la cultura única de las comunidades de peluqueros de todo el país, tratando de mostrar las habilidades de peluqueros mezclado con comedia, cosas que pasan en las peluquerías de todo el país. La serie, que fue grabada el verano pasado, pone a los peluqueros, uno contra otro, en una arena sin filtro y sin restricciones. Ellos están retados a crear peinados con diseños elaborados, empezando con imágenes de las caras de personas y acabando con vistas de ciudades maravillosas. Los peluqueros solo usan sus maquinas de cortar pelo (clippers) y algunas herramientas para colorear para crear esas complejas obras de arte. Según el comunicado de prensa de CW los episodios contienen dos retos: reto de “buzz-cut” (pelo casi rapado), hecho adentro de una peluquería icónica y reto de “cut-down” (corte) ubicado en una localidad famosa de cada ciudad. Al final de cada episodio el campeón es coronado. El avance hacia el reconocimiento mundial del Sr. Rosas empezó julio del 2014 cuando él cortó la imagen de Col. Harlan Sanders de Kentucky Fried Chicken en el pelo del hijo de uno de sus amigos. La imagen se hizo viral y los noticieros del todo el mundo buscaban al Sr. Rosas. “La persona que lanzó el show a CW me conoce y él me animaba a buscar a los productores y seguir con el proceso
de solicitud,” dijo el Sr. Rosas, quien a ganado muchos títulos nacionales por su trabajo. “También uno de mis amigos me ayudó con la presentación del video y tuve una larga entrevista telefónica con los productores. Que bueno que vieron algo en mi que les gustó y me dieron la oportunidad.” Los productores del show no permiten al Sr. Rosas el hablar sobre lo que pasó durante las grabaciones, donde se grabó el show o su salario. “Le puedo decir que se grabó el verano pasado y yo represento Chicago – el show se dirige a las ciudades grandes – y yo divertí haciendo esto,” el Sr. Rosas dijo. “Hay unas cosas que yo no sé.” Lo que el Sr. Rosas sabe bien es que Cedric the Entertainer es la persona que vemos en la pantalla chica y grande – un hombre divertido y maravilloso. “Un hombre maravilloso con un sentido de humor maravilloso,” el Sr. Rosas dijo. “Él es un comediante tremendo y con mucha energía. Líder de comunidad Latina en Iowa fue asesinado en México después de su deportación
La denegación de asilo de Constantino Morales demuestra la necesidad para una reforma comprehensiva de inmigración en los EEUU. Des Moines, IA. Constantino Morales fue un líder de la comunidad Latina en Iowa para reforma comprehensiva de inmigración. También fue un miembro activo de Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. Ayer Constantino fue asesinado en México después de su deportación en el 2 de septiembre de 2014. Él fue una policía del estado de Guerrero que luchó públicamente contra los narcotraficantes. Por eso, estaba un objetivo de ataques violentos y vino a los EEUU para refugio. Constantino se volvió un miembro de Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement en 2011 cuando tuvo una experiencia del robo de salario y discriminación por la policía local. Se volvió más involucrado como un líder para justicia de inmigrantes y se volvió un gran líder en la comunidad Latina de Des Moines. Inspiró la comunidad a hablar públicamente de las problemas de nuestra sistema de inmigración. Constantino recibió la primera noticia de juicio en 2011 para su residencia sin documentación en los EEUU. Dijo al juez que tuvo mucho miedo de regresar a México porque trabajaba contra los narcotraficantes. El juez le aconsejó dirigirse al asilo en el junio de 2013 pero le negó en el 27 de febrero de 2014. Eso no le paró. Miembros de la comuni-
dad empezaron una campana - “Parar la deportación de Constantino”. Líderes de la comunidad y Constantino encontraron con Congresista Latham, Senador Grassley, Sheriff McCarthy de Des Moines, legisladores de Iowa, representativos de ICE y otros oficiales que podrían usar su influencia política para parar su deportación. También empezaron a influir otra gente de Iowa para llamar ICE y escribir cartas de apoyo de Constantino. ICE recibió más de 200 llamadas y cientos cartas sobre el caso de Constantino. Constantino dijo a Representativo Latham de Congreso durante una cita en el 6 de agosto de 2013 que “si regreso a México me voy a enfrentar más violencia y podría perder mi vida. Estamos en una necesidad grave de reforma de nuestra sistema de inmigración y un camino a la ciudadanía. No queremos más excusas. Sabemos que Ud. puede hacer que suceda.” Iowa CCI envió un solicitud segundo en el 21 de abril de 2014 a ICE para usar su autoridad y discreción sobre el caso de Constantino y las circunstancias. ICE lo negó otra vez. La comunidad Latina y los partidarios de los derechos de inmigrantes han entristecido y enfurecido por la noticia del muerto de Constantino. “Esta tragedia podría haberse evitado,”

co y otros países de América Latina cada año. Hay un estimado de 11 millones inmigrantes sin documentación que viven en las sombras y tienen miedo de deportación.

Des Moines community leader killed after Announcement by Darryl Morin, LULAC National VP-Midwest on 2016 Presidential campaign deportation to Mexico Former Mexican police officer denied asylum in US shows need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform now Des Moines, IA. On Sunday night Constantino Morales, a community leader on immigration issues in Iowa, was shot and killed after being deported to Mexico on September 2, 2014. Constantino, a former police officer for the Guerrero State Police Force in Mexico, came to the United States in 2010 after being assaulted three times by armed men and receiving threats while working. In 2011, Constantino joined Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement when he experienced wage theft in Iowa and racial profiling by the local police departments. He became more involved in immigrant justice issues and quickly became a community leader in Des Moines, helping lead actions related to immigration reform, sharing his testimony and getting others in the community involved in fighting for fair and just immigration reform. In 2011 Constantino received his first notice to appear before court for residing in the US without documentation. Due to the fact that he had been a police officer in Mexico, Constantino told the immigration judge that he was scared to return home, the judge told him to apply for asylum. He applied for asylum in June 2013 and was denied asylum on February 27, 2014. He didn’t stop there. Members of the community started a “Stop Constantino’s Deportation” campaign. Community leaders and Constantino met with former Congressman Latham, Senator Grassley, Des Moines Sherriff Bill McCarthy, State Legislators, Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) staff and other appointed and elected officials who could have weighed in to stop Constantino’s deportation. They also started asking other Iowans to write letters and make phone calls to ICE to ask them to cancel the deportation – generating hundreds of postcards and over 200 calls to ICE. As a former Mexican police officer who stood up to publicly against drug trafficking he knew that if he returned to Mexico
he would face grave danger. At a meeting on August 6, 2013, Constantino told Rep. Latham, “If I am sent back, I will face more violence and I could lose my life. We are in severe need of fair immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship. We don’t want any excuses; we know you can make this happen.” In April 2014, CCI members were in WashingtonD.C. and pleaded with Senator Grassley to take action to stop Constantino’s deportation. On April 21, 2014, Iowa CCI sent a second request for prosecutorial discretion, with letters of support from Des Moines Sherriff Bill McCarthy and Iowa State Representative Bruce Hunter, but the request was denied. Prosecutorial discretion is the authority of an agency or officer to exercise discretion in deciding when to prosecute and when not to prosecute based on a priority system has long been recognized as a critical part of U.S. law. Specifically, prosecutorial discretion may be exercised when deciding whether to: issue a detainer; initiate removal proceedings; focus enforcement resources on particular violations or conduct; stop, question, or arrest a particular person; detain or release someone on bond, supervision, or personal recognizance; settle or dismiss a removal case; stay a final order of removal; pursue an appeal; and/or execute a removal order. The news of Constantino’s death has saddened and angered the Latino and Immigrant Rights Community. “This tragedy could have been prevented,” said Luis Rodriguez, CCI Leader. “People are dying while Congress and our elected officials fail to act. How many more people have to die?” Every year, thousands of people are torn apart from their families and deported back to Mexico and other Latin American countries. There are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States that live in the shadows, who fear deportation.
For many, today will be considered the start of the 2016 presidential campaign season. In a video released earlier today, Hillary Clinton announced that she is seeking the presidency of the United States. This announcement will be followed shortly by an announcement by Governor Jeb Bush announcing his presidential aspirations. Both are considered front runners in their respective parties. There have been others who have announced their intentions and yet more that will do so shortly. Unfortunately, many have already reversed their positions to gain favor with those on the extreme ends of our nation’s political spectrum, not deciding policy by national interest or even principal, but bartering the best interests of our nation for the ill perceived value of primary votes. As these campaigns begin to focus on wedge issues, the topic of immigration reform will be atop their list of talking points. The extreme on the Republican side will continue to frame all undocumented immigrants as law breakers, drug dealers and insist that they are a terrible economic drain on our nation, while knowing these statements are disingenuous. The Democratic side will argue they are the only party fighting for justice and opportunity for all immigrants. This being said, when Democrats held the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate at the beginning of this Presi-
dent’s term, and in spite of numerous reassurances, immigration reform legislation was never put forth for a vote. For this reason, I encourage all this campaign season, to hold those seeking your vote accountable for their positions and remarks. Let us once again aspire to have elected leaders that can serve as role models for our children. Let us expect our elected leaders to be of strong character and hold to their positions in spite of campaign contributions. Let us vote for the best person for the position, not the best personality for the party. Let us once again put our own families and communities before any political party. This should not be a novel idea. However, it is estimated that over $5 billion dollars will be spent between candidates, parties and outside interests on the 2016 presidential election alone. Family and community first… Voting for the best candidate… Putting my interests before the party’s interest. Many would call this “revolutionary thinking”.
