Donald Trump ha monopolizado los medios de comunicaciones desde que él anunció su campaña presidencial con sus cometarios agresivos y mentiras hacia las comunidades de minorías. La cobertura de Trump se salió de control, pero los medios de comunicaciones han sido facilitadores en normalizar la campaña de odio de Trump haciendo a un lado su deber de ellos de exigir responsabilidad por sus acciones a las personas públicas. El noviembre pasado, como el ejemplo más grande de los medios de comunicaciones dándole cubertura gratis al candidato presidencial, Saturday Night Live (SNL por sus siglas en inglés) invitó a Trump a presentarse a pesar de la oposición fuerte de manifestantes incluyendo LULAC. A menudo políticos se presentan en el programa de SNL durante la temporada de elecciones, pero, tener a un candidato presidencial como presentador durante temporada de elección es algo raro. Fue un insulto para más de los 50 millones de latinos de este país que un programa tan icónico se venda por unas cuantas risas baratas, considerando que previamente NBCUniversal anunció que ellos iban a romper los lazos de negocio con Trump pronto después de que él llamo a los mexicanos violadores, criminales y narcotraficantes. Sea la cubertura satírica o seria, los medios de comunicaciones – televisión, radio, periódicos y revistas y en línea – han estado más que contentos en seguir el juego de Trump por medio de expansión de cubertura de él con consistencia. Fragmentos de sus entrevistas, haciendo chivos expiatorios de latinos y otros minorías, son parte de la rotación constante, y después siguen los fragmentos de sus entrevistas insultando a los discapacitados, mujeres y veteranos.

Mas Trump significa más comerciales vendidos, ratings más altos y más clics en las historias. Pero promover la cubertura completa de Trump trajo mucho dinero a los medios de comunicaciones pero al costo alto a las minorías y grupos con poca representación. El CEO de CBS Leslie Moonves comentó sobre la carrera política confirmando como los medios de comunicaciones priorizaron las ganancias en lo que se trata de la cobertura de Trump, “¿Quien iba a pensar que este circo iba a venir a la ciudad? Pero, saben – puede ser que esto no es bueno para Estados Unidos, pero esto es muy bueno para CBS, es todo lo que les puedo decir. ¿Entonces que puedo decir? –Es, ustedes saben – el dinero está entrando y eso es divertido.” Pero para muchos grupos que son enfoque de los ataques de Trump, esto no es divertido. Aunque recientemente Trump fue criticado mucho por la prensa (los estaban criticando por decir que las mujeres que escogen un aborto deben de ser castigadas), no es suficiente para disuadirlo. Donald Trump has held a monopoly on the media since announcing his presidential campaign with an onslaught of gross lies targeting minority communities. Coverage of Trump has spiraled out of control, but the media has been the enabler in normalizing Trump’s campaign of hate by putting aside its core duty of holding public figures accountable for their actions. Last November, in one of the biggest examples of free media attention given to a presidential candidate, Saturday Night Live invited Trump to host despite loud opposition from protesters, including LULAC. SNL is known for having politicians appear on the show during election season; however, having a presidential candidate serving as host during election season is a rarity. It was an insult to the more than 50 million Latinos in this country that such an iconic program would sell out for the sake of a few cheap laughs, considering NBCUniversal previously announced they would break business ties with Trump right after he labeled Mexicans as rapists, criminals, and drug dealers. Whether the coverage is satirical or serious, the media -- television, radio, newspapers and magazines, and online -- has been more than happy to play along with Trump’s joke by constantly expanding coverage of him. Soundbites of him scapegoating Latinos and other minorities are on constant rotation, followed by more soundbites of him insulting the disabled, women, and veterans. More Trump equals more ads sold, higher ratings, and more story clicks. But by promoting wallto-wall Trump coverage, the media has profited greatly at the expense

of minorities and other underrepresented groups. CBS CEO Leslie Moonves commented on the race in February by confirming how the media has prioritized profit in its Trump coverage, “Who would have thought that this circus would come to town? But, you know -- it may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS, that’s all I got to say. So what can I say? It’s -- you know, the money’s rolling in, and this is fun.” But for many of the groups targeted by Trump, this is not fun. This is dangerous. In addition to scapegoating minority groups, Trump actively encourages his supporters to use violence against protesters. The result is widespread violence at Trump rallies. Protesters are getting sucker punched, a teenager was pepper-sprayed, and an African American woman was shoved back and forth by a group of individuals. Instances of verbal abuse by supporters is another example of hate at his rallies, with one instance of a man yelling at black protesters, “Go back to Africa”. A Trump rally in March scheduled to take place at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a school with nearly 25 percent Latino students, was called off after students of the university began a petition to cancel the event. Students cited safety concerns because of Trump’s statements and outbreaks of violence at Trump rallies that were often directed at protesters. “As an undocumented UIC graduate student, I feel unsafe knowing that Trump along with his followers will be at my university,” wrote Jorge Mena Robles, the creator of the petition. “It’s become clear that his rallies are not just political events but mobilizing moments for active hate groups to amass.” Despite outbreaks of violence incited by Trump and his supporters,

Trump continues to not only dominate the media, but also dictate the terms. When Fox News turned down Trump’s request to change moderators for the last GOP debate before the Iowa caucuses in February, Trump decided to skip the debate. The message was clear that Trump would only allow access if he was able to control the narrative. It wasn’t until last month that NBC’s Sunday morning news program Meet the Press finally stopped allowing Trump to call in by phone, a practice used by him throughout his campaign to dodge questions and maintain control over the conversation. Sunday morning programs have conducted at least 28 phone interviews with him, a privilege not given to other candidates. But why didn’t this happen earlier? Why has it taken this long for the media to hold him accountable? Even as Trump has endured more recent criticism from the press (he has come under severe scrutiny for saying women deserve to be punished if they choose to have an abortion), it is still not enough to deter him. Any coverage of him must address his unrealistic policies and the effects of his dangerous rhetoric, instead of the current sensational coverage that merely legitimizes his opinions for large segments of the American public Trump was created by the media, and now it’s their responsibility to pull the plug and dump Trump. Former U.S. Treasurer wants immigration reform, says Republicans losing Hispanic vote By Stephen Elliott Courtesy of The Dispatch BETTENDORF — The first Latina immigrant to hold the position of U.S. Treasurer said Saturday the Republican Party is going to pay at the polls for comments made about the country’s Hispanic population. Rosario Marin, who served as U.S. Treasurer under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2003, said the Republican Party she grew to love, starting with her first vote for Ronald Reagan back in 1984, has lost its way. Prior to her keynote address before the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Marin spoke about some of the challenges the country is facing today, including a presidential election that has produced hostility and polarization among the masses. “Today, my party, the people I have worked so hard for, when I listen to the discourse, it’s just painful,” Ms. Marin said. Ms. Marin is a businesswoman, author and internationally sought after public speaker, according to the American Program Bureau. She also served in former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cabinet as Secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency from 2006 to 2009. She said the language used by Republican presidential candidates, such as Donald Trump, takes the party down a notch. She said Ronald Reagan drew her to the Republican Party. “When I met Mrs. Reagan, I told her precisely that,” she said. “He (President Reagan) made me feel welcome.

“I think it’s one of the problems that I see for people in my situation, the Latino conservative Republicans,” she continued. “With the options we have right now, the only option we have is (John) Kasich). “I never say his (Mr. Trump’s) name.” She called him, “The little orange man,” who has insulted her as a woman, an immigrant, a Mexican immigrant, and a mother of a child with a disability. “The guy has insulted me one way or another,” she said. “I have no love for this gentleman.” As for immigration reform, Ms. Marin said both Democrats and Republicans have failed in their efforts. “Immigration is an issue being used by both parties for their political purposes,” she said. “It’s easy to do this. When the Democrats were in power, they could have had immigration reform, whether with President Clinton or President Obama. They had the Congress, the Senate, and the White House. “They chose not to do that. Right now, the rhetoric on the Republican side against undocumented immigrants, I see our party taking the biggest hit. “At least the Democrats don’t insult us. They don’t help us, but they don’t insult us.” Ms. Marin, who completed the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, was scheduled to speak to 380 people Saturday. But, you can make it.” One of the areas she has worked on is helping the approximately 10 million unbanked Americans, or those who have no bank account. reasons he asked her to speak in the QuadCities. “A lot of Hispanics are largely unbanked,” Mr. Macias said. “They might use fringe products and they might be taken advantage of. They might not know the language, the options, or what credit is for. “A lot of Americans in general could use this financial education. That’s why we were very interested in getting her here. She was at the very top level of government.” Mr. Macias said there was an excellent turnout Saturday. “Our group is becoming stronger in the Quad-Cities,” he said. “We regularly see new faces at our events.”

Dog-fight sweep nets two arrests; 64 dogs seized in the Quad Cities By Stephen Elliott Courtesy The Dispatch A federal dog fighting investigation Thursday resulted in two arrests and more than 60 dogs being seized in the QuadCities. Rock Island Police Chief Jeffrey VenHuizen said 11 federal search warrants were executed Thursday April 14 in Rock Island and Davenport as part of an on-going investigation related to dog fighting, narcotics and a firearm. A news release from Rock Island Deputy Chief of Police Jason Foy said the investigation began about a year ago based on information developed by Rock Island Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Quad Cities Federal Gang Task Force. Two Rock Island men, Ryan M. Hickman, 41, and Willie Jackson, 34, were arrested Thursday in connection with the investigation. Mr. Hickman has been charged with possession with intent to deliver a

controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony. Mr. Jackson was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, a Class 4 felony. Rock Island County State’s Attorney John McGehee said there are a myriad of animal abuse charges — felony and misdemeanor offenses — that are possible under Illinois law. Starting at about 6 a.m. Thursday, 10 search warrants were executed in Rock Island and one in Davenport. According to the police news release, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is assisting with this operation and is transporting the animals to a temporary shelter where they will provide care for the animals until custody is determined. At least 14 ASPCA members were seen at the Rock Island Police Station Thursday afternoon, standing outside. A truck and trailer with dogs inside was parked on the street.

ASPCA members outside the police station would not comment, but the group issued a news release Thursday afternoon saying it helped authorities remove 64 pit bulls from multiple properties. “Responders discovered dogs tethered on heavy chains and training devices consistent with dog fighting,” the release stated. The dogs will receive “medical attention and behavioral enrichment” by ASPCA veterinarians, behaviorists and responders, the release stated. “The level of brutality we continue to see in organized dog fighting rings is profoundly troubling,” said Tim Rickey, vice president of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. “We’re relieved these animals have finally been removed from this cycle of violence.” On its website, the ASPCA states fighting dogs may have their ears cropped and tails docked close to their bodies “to minimize the animal’s normal body language cues and to limit areas that another dog can grab

during a fight.” Fighters usually perform the cropping/docking themselves “using crude and inhumane techniques,” according to the site. Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states but, according to the ASPCA, it occurs throughout the country “in every type of community.” Multiple agencies are involved in the Quad-Cities dog fighting investigation. Along with Rock Island Police and the FBI, the investigation has included the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, Illinois State Police, the Rock Island County State’s Attorney’s and Sheriff’s offices, the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group, Moline Police, East Moline Police, Davenport Police and the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. El Jefe de policía de Rock Island Jeffrey VenHuizen dijo que el jueves se ejecutaron 11 órdenes de cateo federales en Rock Island y Davenport como parte de una investigación actual relacionada con peleas de perros, drogas y armas de fuego. nizadas nos parece muy inquietante,” dijo Tim Rickey, vicepresidente de Investigaciones y Reacción de ASPCA. “Estamos tranquilos que esos animales por fin fueron sacados de este ciclo de violencia.” En su página Web, ASPCA declara que los perros que pelean pueden tener sus orejas y colas cortadas cerca a sus cuerpos “para reducir las señales de lenguaje corporal normales y para limitar las áreas que otro perro puede morder durante la pelea.” Los peleadores mismos les cortan colas y orejas “usando técnicas crudas e inhumanas,” según la página Web. Peleas de perros son un delito en los 50 estados, pero según ASPCA, pasan en todo el país “en cualquier tipo de comunidad.” Diferentes agencias están participan-

Ayer Marchamos, Hoy Votamos Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El 1 de Mayo del 2006 es un día para recordar. La gente se juntó y unidos cruzaron el puente Centennial en los Quad Cities. Alrededor de 3,000 personas participaron protestando el proyecto de ley que clasificaría a los inmigrantes indocumentados en los Estados Unidos como criminales por delito grave. En aquel tiempo, La Marcha del Día de la Unidad, ese fue su nombre, fue considerada todo un éxito. Hasta los medios de comunicaciones a nivel nacional y locales la cubrieron. “Nosotros fuimos un grupo pequeño. Nos juntábamos en el comedor de mi casa, allí fue donde nos reuníamos tratando de organizar la marcha. Parte del grupo tan solo eran jovencitos de la preparatoria, pero aunque les faltaba experiencia, ellos mostraron mucha pasión,” Tar Macias, editor de Hola América, contó sobre su experiencia siendo parte del grupo organizador de la Marcha Día de la Unidad del 2006. “Además de la ayuda de un buen grupo de voluntarios, les pedimos a organizaciones grandes como LULAC y Radio KALA de St Ambrose su apoyo y por medio de los medios de comunicaciones latinos de aquel tiempo Hola América y KALA en Español y la ayuda de los comerciantes locales latinos pudimos movilizar alrededor de 3,000 personas.”

Muchas otras personas también recuerdan ese día y sienten orgullo por haber participado en este evento histórico para la comunidad hispana de los QC. “Participar en la Marcha de Día de la Unidad para mí era algo importante. Mis padres son de México, yo soy ciudadana nacida aquí, pero yo conocía la gente que podía haber sido afectada por esta ley nueva que estaban tratando de aprobar. Había gente en mi vida que si esta ley se aprobaba, posiblemente yo no los iba a ver nunca. Sabía que tenía que hacer algo. Creo que ese evento era un momento que nos dio poder en la comunidad, me mostró que tanto se puede hacer cuando nosotros, como la comunidad, nos apoyamos y trabajamos juntos,” Cristal Rios, compartió su experiencia personal y pensamientos. Miles de residentes de los Quad Cities comparten la opinión de Cristal Rios. En el 2006 todos sentían que estaban a punto de ver cambios grandes. Algo bueno tenía que pasar. Mientras que el proyecto de ley en contra del cual los manifestantes marcharon no fue aprobado, al parecer todo lo demás se quedó congelado en el tiempo. Los años están pasando, frustraciones de no poder alcanzar el sueño de una reforma migratoria están creciendo y ahora el ambiente político del 2016 está poniendo una distancia aún más grande

entre aquellos que no pierdan la esperanza al sueño americano y la dura realidad de vivir sin un estatus legal. Han pasado 10 años, pero poco ha cambiado. Si, algunos jóvenes (DACA) han tenido la oportunidad de terminar sus estudios y hasta encontrar trabajo en su campo de estudios, pero esos jóvenes no fueron los que empezaron esta lucha. Desafortunadamente, aquellos que empezaron esta lucha se quedaron fuera del beneficio resultado. Y ahora la Corte Suprema y políticos están contendiendo el destino de gente que ha vivido aquí por décadas, trabajando duro y aprendiendo a amar este país como si fuera suyo. Muchos de ellos no tienen una voz, ni el derecho de poder votar. Por eso es la responsabilidad de aquellos que disfrutan de este derecho a salir y alzar su voz. Por favor, haga que su voto cuente este noviembre, vote porque usted entiende que no solamente el futuro de los inmigrantes indocumentados depende de su voto, sino su propio futuro depende de el. Es hora de actuar. Si ellos no les escuchan cuando ustedes marchan entonces ahora esta en sus manos hacer algo y hacerles entender que ustedes saben como usar este derecho de votar que es tan preciado.

Yesterday we Marched, Today we Vote By Anastassia Zvoryguina May 1 of 2006 is a day to remember. People gathered and united walked across the Centennial Bridge in the Quad Cities. About 3,000 people participated protesting a bill that would have made undocumented immigrants in the United States into felons. Day of Unity March, as it later became known, was called a great success at the time. It even received national and local coverage. “It was a small group of us that in my dining room we held the meetings trying to figure out how we were going to organize the march. Part of the group were high school kids, but what they lacked in experience they made up in passion,” Tar Macias, publisher of Hola America, said about his experience helping organize the Day of Unity March in 2006. “On top of the help of the small group of volunteers, we reached out to organizations like LULAC and KALA radio for their support and through the Latino media at that time Hola America and KALA en Español and the help of local Latino owned businesses we mobilized about 3,000 people” Many others also remember that day and feel proud to have been a part of something like this.

“Participating in The Day of Unity March was a huge deal for me, my parents are from Mexico, I am a natural born citizen but I knew people first hand who would be greatly affected by this new law that they were trying to pass. There were people in my life that I could possibly never see again if this went through; I knew I had to do something. I believe this event was such an empowering moment in the community, it showed me just how much can be done when we, as a community, support one another and work together,” Cristal Rios shared her personal experience and thoughts. Thousands in Quad Cities share Cristal Rios’ opinion. In 2006 everyone were feeling that they were on the verge of big changes. Something good had to happen. While, that bill people were marching against did not pass, everything else regarding immigration reform seems to be frozen in time. Years are passing, frustration of not being able to achieve the dream is growing, and now the political atmosphere of 2016 has put a greater distance from those who still hope for the American dream and the cruel reality of living as a second class human being. 10 years ago people were full of hope, believing they had reached those who did not want to hear, believing they

achieved something, believing the change was near. 10 years have passed, but very little has changed. Yes, some young people (DACA) got a chance to finish school and even work in their field of study, but those young people did not start this struggle for comprehensive immigration reform. Unfortunately, those who did start the fight were left out of the resulted benefits. And now courts and politicians are debating the fate of the people who had been here for decades working hard and learning to love this country

as their own. Many of them do not have a voice, that precious right to vote. That is why it is up to those who enjoy this right to go out there and raise their voices for the ones who can’t. It is time to act. If they do not hear you when you march, if they refuse to see you when you march, so it is in your hands to act and make them understand that you also know how to exercise this precious right to vote. Yesterday we marched, today we vote.

Vecinos se unen para celebrar el barrio Floreciente de Moline Celebre Floreciente. Celebre su comunidad. Celebre sus vecinos. El segundo evento anual, Celebra Floreciente, presentado por el Centro de Justicia Social Palomares junto con Comunidades Globales, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi River y Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities, será el sábado 7 de mayo con actividades en el Centro de Justicia Social Palomares, ubicado en 133 4th Ave, y en el Boys & Girls club, ubicado en 338 6th Street en Moline. “La meta de Celebra Floreciente es juntar los vecinos y familias para un evento divertido anual, educar a los niños sobre su cultura, y crear orgullo en la vecindad Floreciente,” Adrian Willie, Vicepresidente de Palomares, dijo.

Los eventos del día incluyeran una variedad de actividades para niños, por ejemplo artes y manualidades y tratar de identificar sus casa en las mapas de Floreciente, también habrá juegos y música para adultos. Además, habrá la distribución de las macetas a los residentes de Floreciente para embellecer su barrio y para que ellos tengan la misma pieza de arte en su patio. El evento es gratis y todos los residentes de la comunidad son bienvenidos a participar. “Estamos emocionados de poder ser parte del evento de este año, Celebra Floreciente, y estamos agradecidos por todo el trabajo hecho por Palomares para hacer este evento posible,” dijo

La idea de tener una pieza de arte común en los patios de las casas salió de las juntas comunitarias organizadas por Comunidades Globales, donde los miembros de la comunidad expresan que según ellos puede fortalecer el sentimiento de la comunidad. Algunos

residentes de Floreciente, The Boys and Girls Club, y Habitat for Humanity estaban trabajando con Comunidades Globales para inscribir personas para recibir las macetas, y organizar voluntarios para pintarlas y distribuirlas. Comunidad Globales también están trabajando con negocios locales para que ellos “adopten” una maceta para ponerla enfrente de su negocio para que los residentes de Floreciente sepan que ellos también son parte del barrio. The second annual “Celebra Floreciente” event, spearheaded by the Palomares Social Justice Center along with Global Communities, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi River, and Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities will take place on Saturday, May 7th with activities at the Palomares Social Justice Center at 133 4th Avenue and the Boys and Girls Club at 338 6th Street in Moline. “The purpose of Celebra Floreciente is to bring neighbors and families together for a fun annual event, to educate children about their heritage, and to create pride in the Floreciente neighborhood,” Adrian Willie, Vice President of Palomares, said. The day’s events will feature a variety of activities for children, ranging from arts and crafts to identifying their homes on maps of Floreciente, and also feature games and music for adults. In addition, flower pots will be distributed to Floreciente residents to beautify the neighborhood and provide a similar

piece of art for their front porches. The event is free and all community residents are welcome to participate. “We are excited to be able to take part in this year’s ‘Celebra Floreciente’ and are thankful for all the work Palomares took in spearheading this event,” said Annisa Wanat, Program Director for Global Communities – Moline. “The day’s events, plus the efforts to distribute flower pots to help beautify the neighborhood are great ways to help forge community pride and strengthen the feeling of togetherness.” Apx. 100 flowerpots will be distributed to Floreciente residents signed up to receive one. The idea of having a common piece of artwork to display on porches emerged from community meetings organized by Global Communities, where community members expressed that this would help strengthen the sense of community. Several Floreciente residents, The Boys and Girls Club, and Habitat for Humanity have been working with Global Communities to sign up people for flower pots, and organize volunteers for their paint-

ing and distribution. Global Communities is also working with local businesses to “adopt” flower pots for their storefronts to increase their profile as active Floreciente residents as well. Carmen Fuentes, of Carmen’s Jewelry at 925 4th Ave in Moline, is on the organizing committees for both the neighborhood flowerpots and the ef-

fort to get local businesses on board. “I went door-to-door with both neighbors and businesses and asked them to sign up for the flower pots because I think it’s important that Floreciente make the neighborhood “mas bonita” and build a sense of community between residents and businesses.”

No todos los abogados se comprometen con sus clientes y luchan por ellos debidamente. Eric Reyes de Eric Reyes Law es uno de los abogados que se entrega a sus clientes al 100%. Sr. Reyes es originario de Rock Island, IL. Él asistió al Colegio Augustana y al Colegio de Leyes de la Universidad de Northern Illinois. Para aquellos que sí, conocían a Cejudo antes de sus días en UFC, saben que él se llevó la medalla de oro en Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing del 2008 y para aquellos que lo conocían antes de esto, ellos saben que él no tuvo una vida fácil cuando era un niño y él ha estado luchando desde el día que nació. Uno de seis hijos con un padre que entraba y salía de la prisión, Cejudo fue forzado a crecer rápido y encontró que la lucha era algo que le daba alivio y algo que manda un mensaje a otros jóvenes en riesgo que se encuentran en la misma situación. “La gente pasa por traumas y adversidades pueden usar eso para motivarse a si mismos,” Cejudo explicó. “Es cuando la gente en realidad se encuentran a si mismos.” Es por eso que él no esta tan nervioso como lo estarían otros peleadores al tener que enfrentarse a Johnson por el título. “Estoy en un periodo de relax,” dijo Cejudo. “Ya que

salga a la pelea es cuando me da.” La cartelera de UFC 197 ha tenido un poco de controversia ya que un peleador por el título tuvo que cancelar su pelea por una herida, mientras que otro peleador fue arrestado y además un reemplazo fuera de la nada. Cejudo no deja que esto le haga perder su calma. “Estoy enfocado en mi propia pelea,” dijo Cejudo. “Les deseo lo mejor, pero estoy enfocado en mi pelea, en mi plan de juego y eso es todo.” Demetrious Johnson no ha perdido ni una pelea desde el 2011 y él ha defendido con éxito su título ocho veces. Cejudo no ha perdió pelea alguna de MMA desde su transición de luchas a MMA en el 2013. Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo Looks for UFC Gold at UFC 197 By Nicholas Cunningham For those that don’t know current #1 UFC flyweight contender, Henry Cejudo (100), they might think that his title fight this weekend will be his toughest fight to date. Cejudo will challenge one of MMA’s most dominant champions, Demetrious Johnson (22-2-1) for the UFC Flyweight title at UFC 197: Jones vs Saint Preux. For those that do know Cejudo before his UFC days, know that he took home a gold medal in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics and for those that knew him even before that, knows that he has overcome many adversities growing up as a child and has been

fighting since the day he was born. One of six children and with his father in and out of prison, Cejudo was forced to grow up fast and found wrestling as an outlet and sends a message to other at-risk youth in similar positions. “People go through trauma and adversity and they can use that to motivate themselves,” explained Cejudo. “That’s when people truly find themselves.” So it makes sense that he is not as nervous as some other fighters may have been when challenging Johnson for the title. “I’m just relaxed period,” said Cejudo. “Once I start walking out is when it really hits me.”

The UFC 197 card has not come without some attention either as the title fight has seen a fighter pull out due to injury, one gets arrested and an out-of-left-field replacement. Cejudo still doesn’t let them detour him from what he needs to get done. “I’m focused on my own fight,” said Cejudo. “I wish them all the best, but I’m focused on my fight, my game plan and that’s it.” Demetrious Johnson has been undefeated since 2011 and has successfully defended his title eight times. Cejudo has never lost an MMA fight since his transition from wrestling to MMA in 2013. With records like that, Cejudo knows how important this

Girl Power is taking over Monster Jam By Anastassia Zvoryguina Move over boys! This year, girls are making a name for themselves in a traditionally male sport. Monster Jam is coming to theQuad Cities from April 30 to May 1 with a line up of more than one female driver. Hola America had a chance to talk to one of the female drivers, Kayla Blood, driver of El Toro Loco®. Kayla Blood was born in the small town of Plaucheville, Louisiana. She shared with us that she always been kind of a tomboy. No, don’t take it as if she always acted and dressed as a boy. In fact, she is as girly girl as they come. But even if she loves doing her hair and makeup, this does not mean she doesn’t enjoy the roar of motor and racing ATVs. Actually, she always loved racing. First, she started racing on foot. In 2008, while she was still in High School, she was the women’s State Champion for the 100 meter hurdles. Her love for speed earned her a scholarship to Northwestern State University. After finishing school she

enlisted in the Louisiana National Guard, where she served for six years. After proudly serving her country, Ms. Blood found herself spending a lot of time at the ATV races and a little later she was not just watching, but racing. In 2015 the opportunity came knocking and she got a chance to participate in Monster Jam ® Quad War Races. Ms. Blood shared that her years of running and her love for speed helped her to get a spot at the Monster Jam ® competition. This might be her first year doing this, but she loves every minute of it and she had already won a couple of small competitions. She has not won the whole event yet, but she said she has come close many times. “I had my down moments and up moments. I learned a lot from my teammates and I plan to do this as long as my body allows me,” Ms. Blood shared excitedly. “This becomes your lifestyle. You breathe it and eat it every day.” Truth to be told, even her 3 year old son, who sometimes comes to see her compete,

loves the loud noise of monster trucks and he loves the races. And while she is surrounded by a lot of testosterone, Kayla Blood never forgets she is a girl. She shared a little secret with us that her and her teammate Bailey Shea Williams, before “going out there to dominate,” they take their time doing their hair and makeup. They have to be tough behind the wheel of their trucks, but that does not mean they don’t need to look good while doing it. “We still do our girly thing, but on the track this is male dominated competition, we have to fight and overcome obstacles,” Ms. Blood shared. “Women are coming out beating men and making a name for themselves.” This is something that motivates Ms. Blood. Kayla Blood said that lately she had seen a lot of little girls coming to Monster Jam® competition. She said that at first they might come with their brothers, but they seem to enjoy it too. Ms. Blood shared that

girls look up to female drivers and to know that she is a role model to all the little girls out there is amazing to her. “I am excited to put on a show for the girls,” Ms. Blood said. This year Monster Jam® is promising to be very interesting and exciting. There will be Monster trucks doing wheelies and donuts, speedsters and ATVs races. Don’t miss this exciting competition! Monster Jam® will perform at the iWireless Center on April 30, 2016 at 7:00 PM and May 1, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Come two hours early for the Party in the Pits, where you can meet Kayla Blood and other drivers and check out her truck El Toro Loco® and others. Las Chicas están conquistando el Monster Jam Por Anastassia Zvoryguina ¡Háganse a un lado, chicos! Este año las chicas se están dándose a conocer en este deporte que tradicionalmente es masculino. Monster Jam® viene a los Quad Cities del 30 de abril hasta el 1 de mayo con el reparto de más de una mujer conductora de estas camionetas gigantes. Hola America tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con una de esas conductoras, Kayla Blood, la conductora de El Toro Loco®. Kayla Blood nació en un pequeño pueblo llamado Plaucheville en el estado de Luisiana. Ella compartió con nosotros que ella siempre convivió entre chicos. No, por favor, no lo tomen a mal, ella no estaba vistiéndose o portándose como un niño. De hecho, ella es una chica muy femenina. Puede ser que le encanta peinarse y maquillarse, pero esto no significa que no le encanta el rugido del motor y carreras de ATV también. A ella siempre le han encantado las carreras. Al principio, ella empezó a participar en las carreras a pie. En el 2008, mientras asistía la preparatoria, ella ganó la competición estatal de carrera de vallas de 100 metros de mujeres. Su amor por la velocidad le ganó la beca a la Universidad Northwestern. Después de graduarse de la escuela ella se unió a la Guardia Nacional donde ella sirvió por seis años. Al terminar su servicio al país, la Srta. Blood se dio cuenta que ella pasaba mucho tiempo en las carreras de ATV y poco después no estaba solo mirando sino participando en ellas. amor por la velocidad le ayudaron a ganar un lugar en la competición de Monster Jam®. Puede ser que este es su primer año haciendo esto, pero a ella le encanta cada minuto de la competencia y ella ha ganado algunas competiciones pequeñas del evento. Ella dice que todavía no pudo ganar el evento completo, pero muchas veces llegó cerca de hacerlo. “Tuve momentos buenos y momentos no agradables. Aprendí mucho de mis compañeros del equipo y planeo hacer esto hasta mi cuerpo me permite,” Srta. Blood compartió emocionada. “Esto se convierte en tu estilo de vida. Uno lo respira y lo come cada día.” La verdad es que hasta su hijito de 3 años, quien también viene a ver a su madre competir, ama el sonido fuerte de las camionetas Monster y le encantan las carreras. Y mientras que ella está rodeada de mucha testosterona, Kayla Blood nunca se le olvida que ella es una chica. Ella compartió un secreto con nosotros. Ella nos dijo que, junto con su compañera del equipo Bailey Shea Williams, antes de “salir a dominar,” ellas se toman el tiempo arreglándose su pelo y maquillándose.
