Desde su establecimiento en 1929, LULAC ha consid erado la educación como su prioridad número uno.Eldomingo 31 de julio de 2022, los concili os de LULAC Quad Cities otorgaron más de $55,000 en becas a 78 estudiantes de los QC y sus alrededores. El Concilio LULAC 10 en Davenport El Concilio LULAC 5285 en Moline y LULAC Muscatine forman LULAC Quad Cities. La cena de becas de LULAC QC se llevo a cabo en Augustana College en el Gerber Cen ter for Student Life. Cada concilio otorga diferentes cantidades de becas según la cantidad de dinero que re caudaron durante el año en sus propios even tos de recaudación de fondos. El TaxSlayer Center en Moline anuncio el lunes que el do mingo 5 de febrero traerán al grupo Intocable. Una banda del género Tejano/ Norteño que subio a la fama en los años 90s con éxitos como “¿Y todo para qué?”, “El Amigo Que Se Fue”, y “Enseñame A Olvidarte” entre otros. Al día siguiente el Rhythm City Casino en Davenport, IA, an unció que Banda Machos se presentara en el Events Center dentro del casino el sábado 4 de marzo. Banda Machos actualizó y modernizó el estilo tradicional de banda sinaloense. Electrificaron y mejoraron el gran sonido del género con instrumentos amplificados, llamativos teclados y su viejo grito de guerra: “¡Arre Macho! “¡Arre EsperemosMacho!” la comunidad hispana de los Quad Cities y sus alrededores están listos para estos dos eventos ya que estos conciertos/bailes servirán como prueba de fuego para ver si estos lugares seguirán invirtiendo en artistas de estos géneros de música.

LULAC Council 10 in Davenport LULAC Council 5285 in Moline and LULAC Muscatine make up LULAC Quad Cities.TheLULAC QC scholarship dinner was hosted by Augus tana College at the Gerber Center for Student Life. Each council awards different amounts of scholarships depending on the amount of money they raised throughout the year in their own fundraisers. Also each council has its own scholarship committee that reviews all applications and sends them to the LNSF office for approval. The LU LAC National Education Service Center (LNESC) program matches the scholarship up to 60% more of the funds pro vided by each council. Funding for the scholarships is generated by local fundrais ing efforts which include weekly Bingo, the annual East Mo line Fiesta Parade, Fiesta Queen Contest, the annual Adolf Lopez Memorial Golf Outing, local corporate sponsors, in dividual donations, as well as other local events.

LULAC Quad Cities awards $55,000 in scholarships to QC Area students
On Sunday, July 31, 2022, LULAC Quad Cities councils awarded over $55,000 in scholarships to 78 students from the QC and surrounding areas.
To date, LULAC Quad Cities councils have awarded around $750,000 to Quad Cities students since the start of their scholarship program in 1978. Congratulations to all the recipients and to the LULAC QC leadership for their commitment to education and our com munity.

It was a good transition, but not with out the usual struggles. “When I first started in real estate,” she says, “my main problem was that I didn’t know what I didn’t know.” But her persis tence and love for helping clients, Spanish speaking or not, really helped to smooth out that learning curve.
“Also, I thought I would never be able to have a career in sales because I was very shy and thought I could never sell anything,” Patty continues. “Then I came to understand that real estate is not about ‘selling’ anything; it’s more about building a relationship with that client and providing them with the information so they can make an informed decision.”

Referrals and return clients are a great barometer of an agent’s success. And those have really helped Patty gauge her work. She has even worked with a client who loved her so much that the client wanted Patty to help her sell her business in Mexico. “Of course,” Patty says, “I couldn’t do that — for legal reasons — but I did put her in touch with a great agent that handled the transaction. That client still keeps in touch with me.” Learning the ins and outs of real es tate has produced some unexpected benefits. “Real estate has taught me how to better invest my money,” says Patty. “Having several properties is the best thing I could have done for myLastfamily.”yearshe and her sister invested in their first property in Riviera Maya near Cancun, and the investment bug has really bitten them. Now, Patty is hoping to pass this bug on to her kids, Gerry, a Chicago Fire Department paramedic, and Aleks, a psychologist. “Success,” Patty says, “is seeing my husband and children happy — making sure that I have a big part in helping them live fulfilled and happy lives.”Which is how she feels about her cli ents. “I love to help people get into a home when they never thought they could become homeowners. I just love being part of making someone’s dream come true.”
Before COVID, her work with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the ELLA (Empowering Latina Lead ership Alliance) really helped her fo cus on networking and opening up her client“Realbase.estate is really about relation ships,” she says. “It doesn’t matter what language my client speaks. You have to care about people, make them feel at home in the transaction. That’s why my motto has always been, ‘Mi Casa es Su Casa.’”

Father and son work together here, not always in perfect harmony. Even so, the bond is solid, each trying to carve out paths in a hard sport. “In the gym sometimes, we bump heads,” the elder Ven egas admits. “You know, I just have to play the role as the coach, not the father. I tell junior, ‘you’ve got to believe inTheme.’”younger Venegas agrees. “I’ve got to trust my corner’s eyes,” Venegas Jr. says. “He sees things I don’t see. And come prepared. Don’t disre spect the game. Be ready.”
Gilbert Jr. (11-1, 7 kos) is scheduled to fight Aug. 20 in Hollywood, Fla., on a Showtime card. He will face unde feated Fiodor Czerkaszyn (19-0, 12 kos) in an eight-round match. The Ukranian-born Czerkaszyn lives in Poland.

On Sept. 3, Gilbert Sr., (18-33-5, 8 kos) is scheduled to take on Kevin Ceja Ventura (10-0, 8 kos) in Ventura’s home city of Omaha, Neb. After a recent workout with his son, the elder Venegas spoke about why he is still fighting at age 45, taking on young up-and-comers, winning and losing, but giving a good show for the fans. He has been fighting professional since 1999. Like his son, the father is still chasing a dream, albeit one that may be a long shot at best. Surely, time has eroded some of his skills that only youth can claim a right to. But, he trains, running and sparring, taking each fight as an other potential chance to achieve a big win. The big win that could lead to something. He’s an optimist, always searching for that opportunity.
The younger Venegas received the call for his big fight in early July. He hasn’t fought in over two years. In the meantime, he has been working out off and on, sparring with some of the local pros and amateurs in the area, work ing out at the Alley Cat gym run by coach Jeff Perez, but never having a set date for another bout, until now. He is motivated, like his father. “I don’t want an opponent where it’s a tune up,” Venegas Jr. says. “I’m already 28 years old. I want to test the limits and risks. That’s what life is all about. Taking the risks. I have a family life, and I’m working. That’s why I’m going hard in boxing. It gives me another goal. For once in my life, I’m sacrificing it all. Giving it a good shot. Hopefully, it will change my life, and I can do what I love.”

“I have a passion for it,” the father says. “I believe in my self. It’s something that’s a part of my life. I’m more like a gatekeeper. I make it hard for my opponents. I’m blessed. I still believe I’ve got that one breakthrough fight. So, God be on my side, I stay healthy.”
“Focus! Focus! Come on! Let’s go son. Push yourself,” the elder Venegas instructs. The bell rings. There is a brief interlude of rest before the work starts all over again. Father and son boxing combinations may not be unique. They have been around for as long as the sport has existed. Some are successful, some are not. But, it’s rare that a father, who is still an active fighter, trains his son. For the Venegas team, it’s a deal they’ve learned to grow with through their careers. Boxing has been a bond for the two. In the coming weeks, that bond will be tested.
The elder Venegas will be in his son’s corner on Aug. 20. He understands pace and distance, when to jab, when to feint. There’s no style he hasn’t faced in both the amateur and professional ranks. His son hopes to put that knowl edge to good use. “I’m so proud of him,” Venegas Jr. says of his father. “I think he’s coming to the realization that he’s about to be done fighting. He’s going to end up being my coach for sure. That’s what I want to happen. But, yeah, he’s still giving these young cats my age a go. He’s fighting pros pects and making exciting fights. He’s a warrior.”
The bell rings inside the gym. The workouts continue. The whack of the gloves thud on the leather heavy bags, pounding out a potential path of future opportunities.
It’s late afternoon and the two fighters are working to gether in the hot confines of the Alley Cat Boxing Club in Moline, Ill. One boxer, Gilbert Venegas, 45, Davenport, is holding up mitts, moving inside the boxing ring while his son, Gilbert Venegas Jr., 28, Davenport, throws his punches at the mitts – jabs, right hands, left hooks. The punches create a loud popping sound upon impact. Sweat breaks out on both father and son, the tempera ture inside the ring seeming to rise as the younger fighter continues his assault on the mitts, picking up the beat, a rhythm both seem to understand without instruction. The timer outside the ring ropes goes off, a loud buzzer indicat ing 30 seconds left in the round.

The Ascentra Credit Union Foundation (ACUF) has part nered with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Il linois since 2020 to help fund the Girl Scouts Community Outreach Series. This series directly supports more than 1,100 at-risk girls in the underserved areas of Moline, Rock Island, Davenport, and Muscatine by building courage, con fidence, and character through a Girl Scout Leadership Ex perience.Tohelp combat the barriers that keep girls from participat ing, the Ascentra Credit Union Foundation has contributed another three-year, $45,000 grant for the continuation of the series.Thedistribution of this new grant gives $10,000, plus a $5,000 match incentive each year for 2022, 2023 and 2024. The incentive match encourages the Girl Scouts to raise an additional $5,000 each year from outside sources to match these incentives. This guarantees $30,000 with a potential $15,000 in incentives, totaling $45,000. The ACUF’s initial grant from 2019 – 2021 was for $50,000.

The 8th annual Gabe’s Gift Memorial 5K Race will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 7:30 AM in Moline, IL at Jane Addams Elementary School. Gabe Per kins died on 12 August 2010 from rhabdomyosarcoma after a 15-month battle with that cancer. He was only seven years old. For the first 4 years, we walked to his gravesite and released green balloons. We are now running for Gabe and raising funds. We’re raising funds for Tudi’s Tribe, a local nonprofit dedicated to bringing comfort to families dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. La octava carrera anual Gabe’s Gift Memorial 5K se llevará a cabo el sábado 10 de septiembre de 2022 a las 7:30 a. m. en Moline, IL, en la escuela primaria Jane Addams. Gabe Perkins murió el 12 de agosto de 2010 de rabdomiosarcoma después de una batalla de 15 meses contra ese cáncer. Tenía sólo siete años. Augustana Possible is a bold new financial aid program that meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for qualifying newly enrolled students. High-achieving students from fami lies with lower incomes can achieve an Augustana education with Augustana Possible. Many students who benefit from Augustana Possible will be the first in their families to attend college. This was the vision of Augustana College graduate Murry Gerber, who made the $40 million commitment to provide financial aid and schol arships to Augustana students with backgrounds similar to his own. His vision has inspired many other donors to bring Augustana Possible to life for future students and alumni.
**Your award total will include Augustana merit scholar ships and other institutional awards, plus any federal and state grants and loans. An Augustana Possible Grant, along with all additional financial aid for which you are eligible, will meet the direct cost of Augustana.
*A recalculated GPA is the best predictor of student success at Augustana College. The Office of Admissions automati cally recalculates a student’s high school GPA to standardize it across the entire applicant pool. Coursework in the fol lowing areas is included in the recalculation: English, lab science, mathematics, social studies and foreign language. Grades in such courses are recalculated and standardized on a 4.0 grading scale. The high school profile is a useful tool in helping ensure proper grade translation. Rigor of course work, including honors level, AP, dual enrollment and IB, is considered, but not within the recalculation of the GPA.
