Descanse en Paz Padre Jerry Logan Conocí al Padre Logan cuando se convirtió en el pastor de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Silvis y es exactamente lo que yo necesitaba en ese momento. Llegó a la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en el momento en que la asistencia no era tan buena y la gente no tenia entusiasmo para ir a misa. Yo estaba bastante perdido en ese momento. Yo estaba listo para dejar la fe católica y él me guío de nuevo en la dirección correcta. Era un gran mentor para mí él siempre estaba ahí cuando yo tenía preguntas o como un hombro en que llorar. Una de las cosas que más me impresionaron sobre el Padre Logan era que logro que la juventud se interesara en misa. Él
hizo un punto especial para hacer de la misa de las 10:30 una masa para toda la familia. Sé que mis hijos realmente disfrutaron participar en la misa con el Padre Logan. El puso en marcha un coro y hasta un coro de niños también. Se puso tan popular que incluso grabaron un CD. Fueron esas pequeñas cosas que me inspiraron e inspiraron a toda la congregación. R.I.P. Father Logan I met Father Logan when he became the Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Silvis and it is exactly what I needed at that time. He arrived to Our Lady of Guadalupe at time when the attendance was not so good and people were not to enthusiastic about church. I was pretty lost at that time. I was ready to leave the catholic faith and he steered me back on the right direction. He was a great mentor for me he was always there for me when I had questions or as a shoulder for me to cry on. One of the things that impressed me the most about Father Logan was that he children involved in the mass. He made
it a special point to make the 10:30 mass the mass for the family. I know my children really enjoyed participating in the mass. He got a choir going and a children’s choir going also. It got so popular that they even made a CD. It was those little things that inspired me and inspired the whole congregation. He will be remembered as a man that was humble servant and a great disciple of Christ. I truly loved the man and he will be missed. God Bless you Father Logan! .

Becas para estudiantes indocumentados Educación es esencial para una vida exitosa. Desafortunadamente, estudiantes con estatus DACA y estudiante indocumentados no pueden pedir ayuda financiera disponible. Por eso es bueno saber que esos estudiantes pueden pedir becas del Illinois Dream Fund. Las solicitudes están disponibles en línea y la fecha límite es viernes 22 de abril a las 11:59 PM de Tiempo Central. Puro Durango en el Colegio Augustana Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Conozca a Samuel Payan, el nuevo Director de Vida Multicultural Estudiantil del Colegio Augustana en Rock Island, IL. El Sr. Payan, hombre de muchos fascinantes intereses, está planeando hacer muchas cosas para convertir al Colegio Augustana en un lugar donde la voz y opinión de toda la gente importa. Samuel Payan es de Melrose Park, IL. Hace 40 años su familia inmigró a los Estados Unidos de Durango, México, buscando oportunidades para mejorar su situación económica. Pasaron los años, Samuel Payan creció y pronto él se encontró en loa Quad Cities asistiendo el Colegio Augustana estudiando Psicología y Sociología. Después de la graduación el destino lo llevo al estado de Indiana donde él obtuvo la maestría en Educación en la Escuela de Psicología de la Universidad Valparaiso. En la Universidad Valparaiso el Sr. Payan tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en la Oficina de Programas Multiculturales donde él empezó trabajando como Coordinador de Programas y poco después lo promovieron a la posición del Asistente del Director. “Durante mi tiempo en la Universidad Valparaiso yo aprendí muchas cosas y descubrí que este tipo de trabajo es perfecto para mí,” Sr. Payan compartió. “Lo que me motivo mas era el nivel de discriminación que una persona de color tiene que enfrentar a diario.” Más que nada el Sr. Payan explicó que
él tiene pasión por educar a los jóvenes de color sobre los obstáculos que muchos enfrentan durante sus años en la universidad y en sus vidas profesionales después de la universidad. Su meta es informar a esos jóvenes y darles herramientas necesarias para enfrentar esas dificultades y alcanzar el éxito en sus vidas profesionales y personales. El Sr. Payan está planeando en alcanzar esta meta, entre muchas otras, en su nuevo puesto de trabajo en el Colegio Augustana. “Tomando esto en cuenta, tener un puesto de trabajo tan importante como Director en el Colegio Augustana, siempre ha sido un sueño mío. De verdad estoy muy emocionado de regresar a la escuela donde yo me gradúe y trabajar con gente maravillosa para convertir al Colegio Augustana en un campus de bienvenida e inclusivo,” el Sr. Payan compartió su emociones por la tarea difícil que él tiene en frente de él. El Sr. Payan esta por empezar a ayudar a cambiar el campus del Colegio Augustana y en el proceso está planeando en cambiar la manera de que escuela ve la diversidad e inclusión. “Esto es lo que me motiva mucho porque el colegio tiene oportunidades grandes para crecer y hacer del campus un lugar de bienvenida e inclusivo para todas las identidades,” el Sr. Payan dijo. Él cree que por los cambios en el sector demográfico los colegios necesitan estar preparados y listos a cambiar algunas de sus políticas y reglas. cambio y la escuela podrá enfrentar cualquier desafío en el futuro. Y mientras que el Colegio Augustana busca estar aun más involucrados en la comunidad, es de gran beneficio para la escuela tener como empleado al Sr. Payan quien tiene esta conexión especial con los Quad Cities. Con todos esos sueños y esperanzas tan importantes que tiene el Sr. Payan, no significa que él no sepa relajarse de vez en cuando. De hecho, el Sr. Payan tiene un pasatiempo muy sorprendente. Él toca saxofón, teclado y hasta sabe cantar. Lo interesante de esto es que cuando él era más joven él tocaba música duranguense en una banda llamada Los Apaches de la Sierra junto con tres de sus hermanos.
“Me gustaría empezar una nueva banda, pero por ahora mis hermanos y yo tocamos música para nuestros amigos y familiares. Pero estamos abiertos a propuestas,” el Sr. Payan dijo con una sonrisa. Cuando él no toca sus instrumentos o canta con sus hermanos, el Sr. Payan disfruta el juego de basquetbol, leer y pasar tiempo con su prometida Selene Giron, que también es graduada del Colegio Augustana. El Sr. Payan es un hombre con experiencia y visión. Su visión es hacer del Colegio Augustana un lugar donde la diversidad e inclusión son parte de la identidad de la escuela. Martínez Actor, Veterano de Guerra y el ganador de “Bailando con las Estrellas” visitara los Quad Cities Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Él es un actor, orador motivador, veterano de guerra, pero más que nada él es una gran inspiración para mucha gente. La historia de José Rene “J.R.” Martínez es una historia de logros maravillosos que van contra toda lógica y el 20 de febrero del 2016 él viene a los Quad Cit-
ies para hablar durante el evento llamado “Through My Eye, A New Way to Look at Mental Illness” (A través de mis Ojos, Una Nueva Manera de Ver la Enfermedad Mental), presentado por la Fundación de Vera French y Genesis Behavior Health. J.R. Martínez nació en Shreveport, Louisiana. Su madre es originaria de El Salvador. Cuando él apenas era un
niño, ellos se mudaron a Hope, Arkansas y cuando Martínez iba a la Preparatoria ellos se mudaron de nuevo ahora a Dalton, Georgia. En el 2002, Martínez se enlistó en el Ejercito de los Estados Unidos. Después de completar Entrenamiento Básico y Avanzado, él obtuvo Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) de 11B (soldado de infantería). En enero
del 2003 él tuvo que reportarse al Fort Campbell y un mes después lo mandaron al Medio Oriente. Aquel año marcó un gran cambio en la vida de Martínez. Inesperadamente ocurrió una tragedia. de inhalación de humo y más de 34% de su cuerpo se había quemado. Después de este accidente horrífico lo llevaron a Ramstein AB, Alemania y poco después él se fue al Centro Quirúrgico de Investigación de Quemaduras de Instituto de las Fuerzas Armadas en Centro Medico de Fuerzas Armadas Brooke (BAMC por sus siglas en inglés) ubicado en San Antonio, Texas. Él sobrevivió la explosión, pero tuvo que pasar por 33 cirugías cosméticas y cirugías de injerto de piel. A pesar de esta curva que el destino le tiro, J.R. Martínez no se dio por vencido y siguió luchando contra toda lógica tratando de alcanzar las estrellas y en el proceso también estaba ayudando a otros sobrevivientes de quemaduras dándoles su apoyo. Además de su trabajo con la comunidad de sobrevivientes de quemaduras, él tam-
bién es un actor, presentador de su show de radio y orador motivador. En el 2008, él apareció en telenovela americana de ABC, All My Children y en la final de la sexta temporada de Army Wives. En el 2013 él tuvo el papel estelar en sindicado SAF13. Ese mismo año él empezó su show de radio cada domingo por la tarde. Entre muchos de sus logros, su presentación durante la temporada número 13 del programa popular Dancing with the Stars (Bailando con la Estrellas) fue una inspiración para muchos en este país. Nadie ni si quiera pudo imaginar que él, junto con su compañera de baile Karina Smirnoff, iba a salir como campeón en la final del programa porque poco antes él había tenido una cirugía grande en su pie y hasta tuvo que aprender a caminar de nuevo con ayuda de su madre. J.R. Martinez actor, combat veteran and Dancing with the Stars champion will visit the QC By Anastassia Zvoryguina He is an actor, motivational speaker, veteran, but above all he is a huge inspiration to many. Jose Rene “J.R.” Martinez’ story is a story of great achievements against all odds and on February 20, 2016 he is coming to the Quad Cities to speak at the special event called “Through My Eyes, A New Way to look at Mental Illness”, presented by The Vera French Foundation and Genesis Behavior Health. J.R. Martinez was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. His mother is originally from El Salvador. When he was still a young boy he, along with his mother, moved to Hope, Arkansas and later while in High School they came to Dalton, Georgia. In 2002, Martinez enlisted in the Army. After completing his Basic and Advanced Training he was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 11B (infantryman). In January of 2003 he was ordered to report to Fort Campbell and next month he was deployed in the Middle East. That year turned into a turning point in the life of Martinez. Tragedy struck unexpectedly. While driving a Humvee, Martinez unknowingly ran over an IED with the vehicle’s left tire. As a result of this accident Martinez suffered from smoke inhalation and over 34% of his body sustained severe burns. After this horrific accident he was evacuated to Ramstein AB, Germany and later transferred to the Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) located in San Antonio, TX. He survived the explosion, but he had to spent 34 grueling months at BAMC he endured 33 cosmetic surgeries and skin graft surgeries. In spite of a curveball that fate threw at him, J.R. Martinez did not give up and fighting against all odds he reached for the stars and while doing so, he also had been helping other burn survivors by providing support to them. Besides working with the burn-survivor community, he also is an actor, radio talk show host and motivational speaker. In
2008, he made an appearance in ABC’s daytime drama All My Children and in the season six finale of Army Wives. In 2013 he starred in syndicated SAF3. This same year he also began to host his radio show on Sunday evenings. Among many accomplishments, his appearance in Season 13 of Dancing with the Stars was a huge inspiration to many in the country. No one could have imagined that he, along with his partner Karina Smirnoff, would be named champion because he had major foot surgery and with the help of his mother he actually had to learn to walk again. In spite of every challenge he faced in his life so far, he did not give up and kept on fighting and, in the process, inspiring everyone to never give up. The residents of the Quad Cities and surrounding areas have this unique opportunity to hear J.R. Martinez speak in person. On February 20 of 2016 at 7:00 PM he will speak at the Bettendorf High School Performing Arts Center, located at 3333 18th St., Bettendorf, IA. Making diversity and inclusion a part of Augustana’s identity By Anastassia Zvoryguina Meet Samuel Payan, new Director of Multicultural Student Life. Mr. Payan, a person of many surprising interests, is planning to make Augustana College a place where everyone’s voice and opinion matter. Samuel Payan is from Melrose Park, IL. 40 years ago his family immigrated to the United States from Durango, Mexico, looking for opportunities to improve their economic situation. Years passed, Mr. Payan grew up and soon he found himself in the Quad Cities attending Augustana College majoring in Psychology and Sociology. After his graduation fate took him all the way to Indiana there he obtained his Master of Education degree in School Psychology from Valparaiso University. In Valparaiso University Mr. Payan got a chance to work in the Office of Multicultural Programs where he started as Program Coordinator at first and later he was promoted to the position of Assistant Director. “During my time in Valparaiso University I learned immensely and discovered that this line of work is my life’s work,” Mr. Payan shared. “What solidified this for me is the level of discrimination a person of color has to endure on a daily basis.” More than anything Mr. Payan explained that he is very passionate about educating young people of color about the obstacles many might face during their student years and in their professional life. His goal is to give these young people necessary information and tools to deal with hardships and
reach success in their personal and professional lives. This same goal, among many others, Mr. Payan is planning to achieve at his new position in Augustana College. “With that in mind, serving in a highly influential position such as the Director at Augustana College, has always been a dream of mine. I am really excited to be back at my alma mater and work with wonderful teammates on creating Augustana College a more welcoming and inclusive campus,” Mr. Payan shared a little of his excitement for the big task ahead of him. Mr. Payan is planning to change the way this school views diversity and inclusion. “This is what motivates me the most because the immense opportunities that the college has for growth on making the campus more welcoming and inclusive to all identities,” Mr. Payan said. He believes that due to changing demographics colleges also need to be ready and willing to change some of their own policies and practices. According to Mr. Payan Augustana College is ready for change and the school will be able to overcome any challenges that might lie ahead. And while Augustana College is looking to be even more involved in the community, of course it’s very beneficial that Mr. Payan has that special connection with the Quad Cities that this position requires. With all this important and serious aspiration and dreams the Mr. Payan has, it does not mean that he doesn’t have moments then he just
“let’s his hair down.” In fact, Mr. Payan has a surprising hobby. He plays saxophone, keyboard and even sings. In fact, when he was younger he used to play in a Durangense music band called Los Apaches de la Sierra, with his three brothers. “I would like to start a new band, but for now my brothers and I only play for friends and family. We are open for business though,” Mr. Payan shares with a smile.
When he does not play his sax or sings with his brothers, Mr. Payan enjoys playing basketball, researching and spending time with his fiancée Selene Giron, who is also a graduate of Augustana College. Mr. Payan is a man with experience and vision. His vision is to make Augustana College a place where diversity and inclusion are part of the school’s identity. It is a difficult task, but Mr. Payan is up for it.

Jose’s Tires 2 abre sus puertas en Davenport Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Es difícil empezar un negocio nuevo, pero a veces es todavía más difícil el encargarse de un negocio establecido y no solamente seguir manejándolo pero también expandirlo y esto se considera un gran éxito. Adriana Rodríguez-Almanza y su esposo Héctor Almanza han logrado este éxito en solo unos cuantos años. Antes de que la Sra. Rodríguez-Almanza y el Sr. Almanza compraran Jose’s Tire Service en el 2012, este era un negocio ya establecido y bien conocido en la comunidad ya que tiene 25 años de existencia en los Quad Cities. De hecho, José Rodríguez de Jalisco, México, el padre de la Sra. Rodríguez, estableció este negocio. Antes de empezar este negocio en el área de los Quad Cities, el Sr. Rodriguez ya tenía una grande experiencia en la industria de servicios de automóviles. Antes de llegar a los Quad Cities en 1988 y abrir Jose’s Tire Service, a lo largo de 5 años el Sr. Rodríguez fue el dueño del taller para reparación de autos llamado Jose’s Tires en Chicago, IL. Ellos ya tenían sus vidas bien organizadas, pero tomarse cargo del negocio significó dejar trabajos en la ciudad, vender propiedades y mudarse a un cuidad más pequeña para poder seguir el sueño de convertirse en unos empresarios respetados y exitosos. “Fue un placer servir la comunidad de la QC y por más de 25 años José estaba haciendo un gran trabajo,” la Sra. Rodriguez-Almanza dijo por medio del correo electrónico. Ella también agregó que ahora era la responsabilidad de ella y su esposo el encargarse que el negocio siga funcionando. Cuando ellos tomaron el cargo del negocio, ellos no sabían como iban a salir las cosas, pero una cosa siempre ha sido constante para ellos y esta cosa es su fe en Dios y es por eso que ellos sabían que con trabajo duro y un poco de ayuda
de Dios las cosas iban a salir bien. Pero claro, la transición de una ciudad grande a una ciudad pequeña en el medio oeste de los Estados Unidos no ha sido fácil. “Dejamos nuestros parientes y amigos en Chicago y extrañamos la comida,” la Sra. Jose’s Tires 2 is now open in Davenport By Anastassia Zvoryguina
It is hard enough to start your own business, but to take over an established business and not only keep it going, but to expand it, can be considered a great feat. Adriana RodriguezAlmanza and her husband Hector Almanza have achieved this success in just a few years. Before Mrs. RodriguezAlmanza and Mr. Almaza acquired Jose’s Tire Service in 2012, it was already a well-known and established business with more than 25 years of service to the Quad Cities community. In fact, Jose’s Tire Service was started by Jose Rodriguez of Jalisco, Mexico, who also happens to be Mrs. Rodriguez-Almanza father. Before founding this business in the Quad Cities, Mr. Rodriguez already had extensive experience in the automotive service industry. Before coming to Quad Cities in 1988 and starting Jose’s Tire Services, Mr. Rodriguez was an owner and operator of Jose’s Tires shop in Chicago, IL for 5 years. After many years of excellent service to the Quad Cities residents, Mr. Rodriguez retired and sold his business to his daughter. After acquiring Jose’s Tire Service Mrs. Rodriguez-Almanza and Mr. Almanza had to make quite a few important decisions that drastically changed their lives. The couple lived in Chicago and had their lives already mapped out and settled. He was the plant manager the company Shape and she was a transition specialist for
the Chicago school district working with special needs students but the new venture required them to quit their jobs, sell their properties and move to a smaller town to pursue their dream of becoming respected and successful business owners. “It has been a pleasure to serve the QC community and Jose did a wonderful job for over 25 years,” Mrs. Rodriguez-Almanza stated over e-mail. She also added that it was now up to her and her husband to keep the business going. When they took over the business they did not know how things would turn out, but one thing has always been constant for them and that was their faith in God and they knew well that with God’s help and a little of hard work things will eventually work out for the best. Of course, the transition from a big city to a small town in the Midwest was not easy. “We left our relatives and friends in Chicago and we totally miss the food,” Mrs. Rodriguez-Almanza shares her experience. “We owned rental properties in Chicago and our home, and selling everything to move to QC area was very challenging, but we were very blessed to have found buyers and be able to move to the QC area.” She told that when the couple moved to the Quad Cities, they did not know anyone here except her father, but, as she stressed numerous times, their faith in God and continuous support of each other helped them to pull
through and even open a second location for Jose’s Tires in Davenport, Iowa this January. “We are committed to continue providing quality services, honesty and reasonable prices for the community. Jose’s Tires has been known for their friendly and good services to the customers and this legacy will continue since it remains family owned,” Mrs. Rodriguez-Almanza assured her customers. It is not easy to leave a life one has created behind and jump into a new venture in an unfamiliar place. Mrs. Rodriguez-Almanza and Mr. Almanza prove that even if it is not easy it is certainly possible. They took over an established business with a long history of great service and expanded it. Their story of success might be inspiring to many new and established business owners. “If you really want something in life focus on the idea, research your idea and plan. Don’t give up on your dreams and always have a back up plan in case your first idea does not work, but most importantly trust the Lord on everything,” Mrs. Rodriguez Almanza shared her advice for achieving success in business. El Programa TRIO del Colegio Comunitario de Sauk Valley hace del sueño de Lupita una realidad Ella es de Sterling y es graduada de la Escuela Preparatoria Católica Central. Lupita Serrano vino al Colegio Comunitario de Sauk Valley (SVCC por sus siglas en inglés) con la meta de encontrar su carrera ideal. Ella quería una carrera en el campo del cuidado de salud para ayudar de alguna manera a la gente. Antes de entrar a la universidad Lupita busco la manera de no quedar con una deuda estudiantil y hallar lo que le gustaba y le pareció que Sauk sería un buen lugar para empezar. Por medio de sus clases, ser voluntaria en la farmacia y una experiencia de acompañar un profesional en el hospital KSB, Lupita llegó a la conclusión que una carrera en farmacología sería el camino correcto para ella. También ella entendió que su participación en el programa TRIO de SVCC le estaba ayudando a hacer su sueño realidad. Cuando uno de estudiantes deportista invitó a Lupita a participar en TRIO, ella aplicó para el programa y empezó tomar ventaja de las muchas
oportunidades que TRIO ofrece. Ella empezó a ser voluntaria para diferentes eventos como YWCA Peace Chain y la celebración de Días de Fiesta en Sterling. Allí ella conoció gente nueva y aprendió a ser más extrovertida y más segura en sí misma. “Antes de participar en TRIO, yo era una persona callada, pero ahora no tengo miedo de hablar con la gente y conocí amigos increíbles,” Lupita compartió. Lupita agradece la atención personal que ella recibe de parte de su consejero de TRIO. Cuando ella empezó a tener problemas con su clase de matemáticas, fue su consejero de TRIO quien le dijo que buscara ayuda de un tutor. “Nunca hubiera buscado un tutor si no fuera por TRIO, y probablemente no hubiera podido sacar buenas calificaciones en esta clase.” Lupita tiene la meta de transferirse a la Universidad de Chicago-Colegio de Farmacia en Rockford para un día ser Doctora de Farmacia. Ella
cree que puede alcanzar su meta gracias a su participación en TRIO de Sauk. “Sea el apoyo cuando tengo dificultades en mi camino o las oportunidades nuevas increíbles, TRIO estaba allí. Básicamente TRIO cambió mi vida. Yo sabía que quería estudiar farmacia, y con ayuda de TRIO, pude asistir el instituto de farmacia del verano. Sauk Valley Community College TRIO program is making Lupita Serrano’s dream possible Sterling native and Newman Central Catholic High School graduate, Lupita Serrano, came to Sauk Valley Community College with the goal of discovering her calling. She wanted a career in healthcare but wanted to help people “behind the scenes” in some capacity. Wanting to avoid student debt, Lupita needed an affordable way to discover her path before going to a university, and Sauk seemed like a great place to start. Through her courses, pharmacy volunteer work, and job shadowing at KSB hospital, Lupita concluded that a career in pharmacology was the right path. Lupita also concluded that her participation in the SVCC TRIO program was making this dream possible. When a fellow Sauk student-athlete told Lupita to get involved in TRIO, she applied to be in the program and started taking advantage of the many opportunities TRIO offers. She started volunteering for events like the YWCA Peace Chain and the Sterling Fiesta Days celebration…meeting new people and becoming more outgoing and confident. “Before joining TRIO, I was pretty quiet, now I’m not afraid to talk to anyone, and I’ve made some incredible friends,” shared Lupita. Lupita appreciates the personalized attention she receives from her TRIO advisor. When she began to struggle with a Math course, it was Lupita’s advisor who pushed her to seek help from a tutor. “I never would have gotten a tutor if I wasn’t in TRIO, and I probably would have failed the class.” With a goal to transfer to the University of ChicagoRockford College of Pharmacy and become a Doctor
of Pharmacy, Lupita believes she can achieve her goals, thanks in many ways to her involvement in Sauk’s TRIO. “Whether it’s giving me support when I hit a bump in the road, or opening up incredible opportunities, TRIO has been there. TRIO basically changed my life. I knew I wanted to study pharmacy, and with TRIO’s help, I was able to attend a summer pharmacy institute. Now, I’m certain that pharmacy is what I want to do with the

La primera Cumbre Multicultural para Jóvenes del Colegio Black Hawk Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Una educación universitaria abre muchas puertas y en el día de hoy muchos jóvenes entienden la importancia de una educación universitaria. A menudo, los jóvenes saben que quieren ir al colegio después de graduarse de la escuela preparatoria pero muchos no saben que se necesita hacer para entrar al colegio y como hacerlo. Por eso el Colegio Black Hawk les invita a los estudiantes del séptimo a duodécimo grado a la Cumbre Multicultural para Jóvenes sábado este 27 de febrero del 2016 de las 8:30 AM hasta 12:30 PM. La primera Cumbre Multicultural para Jóvenes fue diseñada para informar estudiantes y sus padres sobre la preparación para el colegio y la escuela preparatoria,
ayuda financiera y becas y la mejor elección de carrera. El día empezará con Carlos Jimenez, Especialista de Prevención de Drogas del Centro Comunitario Martin Luther King Jr., hablando con participantes y compartiendo su experiencia de ser primero en su familia quien asistió al colegio y en general su experiencia como estudiante de colegio. Después del discurso habrá diferentes sesiones de talleres. Habrá talleres sobre ayuda financiera y becas y hasta los padres podrán participar en un taller diseñado especialmente para ellos donde se dará información sobre recursos disponibles y para enseñarles como apoyar a su estudiante de colegio o estudiante de preparatoria. Este taller también va a estar presentado en español. Cuando los participantes terminen con
los talleres habrá una discusión en panel presentada por estudiantes. Durante esta plática los estudiantes del colegio actuales compartirán sus experiencias personales y hablarán sobre los desafíos y dificultades que ellos tuvieron que enfrentar en su camino. Después de esta plática los participantes se juntaran para escuchar el discurso de Chris Britton de Youth Hope. Durante la Cumbre Multicultural para Jóvenes los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de aprender más sobre diferentes carreras disponibles. También, desde las 11:30 AM hasta la 1:00 PM los participantes podrán ser parte de la Feria de Recursos y Colegios. Durante la Feria de Recursos y Colegios los representantes de diferentes colegios, las Fuerzas Armadas, organizaciones y agencias comunitarias compartirán información sobre los

A college education opens many new doors and nowadays many young people understand the importance of it. Often young people know they want to go to college after graduating High School, but many do not know what to do and how to go about anything related to college. That is why Black Hawk College is inviting students from 7th to 12th grade to the Multicultural Youth Summit on Saturday, February 27, 2016 from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The first ever Multicultural Youth Summit was
created to inform students and their parents about high school and college preparation, financial aid and scholarships and the best choice for their career. The day will start with Carlos Jimenez, Drug Prevention Specialist from Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, addressing participants and sharing his personal experience of being a first generation student to go to college and in general his experience as a college student. After the speech different workshop sessions will take place. There will be a workshop on financial aid and scholarships and
even a special session for parents that will inform parents of future college students about resources available and teach them to support their college or high school student. This special parent session will also be presented in Spanish. Once participants finish with the workshops there will be a Student Panel. During this discussion current college students will share with the audience the personal experiences, barriers and challenges they had to face. After the discussion everyone can come together for closing remarks from Chris Britton from Youth
Hope. During the Multicultural Youth Summit there will be an opportunity to learn more about different careers that a student can choose to pursue. Also, between 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM participants can checkout the Resource and College Fair. During the Resources and College Fair there will be representatives from many different local colleges, Army recruitment, community organizations and agencies who will share information about services and resources available to families of the Quad Cities and surrounding areas.

SOCIALES Fernando & Omelina Rios celebrated their 25th Anniversary Sunday February 14, 2016. They celebrated their anniversary with a vow renewal ceremony & surprise dinner with close family & friends. Fernando Rios of Moline, Il and Omelina Lievanos also of Moline, Il, were married 2/14/1991 at the Rock Island County Courthouse and have resided in Moline, IL since. Mr. Rios has worked in the IT department for Augustana College in Rock Island, IL for 15 years and Mrs. Rios is a homemaker and the best mother ever! They have 5 children, Diana Andrade, Moline, Cristal Rios, Rock Island, Patricia Rios, Fernando Rios Jr & Alejandra Rios all in Moline. They also have 4 grandchildren. Mr. & Mrs. Rios were married by the church 9/1/01 and will celebrate their 15 years of their religious matrimony this following September. They are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Moline IL.
