El Conejo y los Huevos de Pascua Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El Día de Pascua está casi aquí. Muchos países del mundo celebran Pascua. Por ejemplo, en mi país, Rusia, todavía falta un mes para la Pascua. La Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa apenas empezó su Cuaresma y todavía falta varios días para la celebración más importante de la primavera. Igual a otros países nosotros también tenemos nuestras tradiciones. No, no tenemos el conejo de pascua tampoco tenemos canastas de pascua, pero sí, pintamos los huevos. Estoy segura que para ahora muchas cosas han cambiado, pero recuerdo que cuando era una niña la gente hervía los huevos con cáscaras de cebollas y de alguna manera los huevos se pintaban de color café anaranjado. También, es una costumbre para el Día de Pascua saludar a todos con las siguientes palabras, “Cristo ha resucitado,” y la gente contesta, “Ciertamente, él ha resucitado.” La gente saluda así a sus familiares, amigos y cualquier persona que ven. También tenemos kulich que es como el pan especialmente hecho para el Día de Pascua. Bueno, esto es solo una miradita de Pascua en Rusia. Pero igual a muchos extranjeros en los Estados Unidos, cuando yo llegué aquí yo también me preguntaba sobre el conejo de pascua. ¿Por qué un conejo? ¿Y que tiene que ver el conejo con la pascua? Por eso decidí compartir con usted lo que yo averigüe sobre las tradiciones de la pascua en los Estados Unidos. Huevos de Pascua: puede ser que
usted se ha preguntado por qué pintamos huevos para el Pascua. Bueno, según muchos esto tiene un significado religioso. Dicen que los huevos son el símbolo de la Resurrección de Cristo y se pinta de rojo para representar la sangre que Jesucristo perdió en la cruz. Otra explicación se trata de María Magdalena, quien fue la primera persona que vio la Resurrección de Cristo. Dicen que ella tenía un huevo blanco en su mando cuando ella estaba proclamando la Resurrección de Cristo al emperador. El emperador le contestó que esto era tan probable como el huevo en su mano poniéndose de color rojo. El huevo se convirtió rojo brillante antes de que el emperador terminara sus palabras. No importa la versión que usted crea, porque en mi opinión ambas historias son bonitas y estas crearon bonitas tradiciones para muchos cristianos del mundo.

Canastas de Pascua y Conejo de Pascua: Se cree que esta tradición de conejo de pascua vino a los Estados Unidos en los años 1700 con inmigrantes alemanes que se instalaron en Pensilvania. Ellos trajeron la tradición llamada “Osterhase” o “Oschter Haws” a los Estados Unidos. Según esta tradición hicieron nidos donde esta creatura les dejaba huevos de colores. A lo largo de tiempo todos empezaron a seguir esta tradición y ahora muchos niños saben que el conejo de pascua viene en la noche y les deja canastas con dulces y juguetes. Dulces de Pascua: Dulces de pascua es una tradición moderna. Sabía usted que Pascua es el segundo día del año donde se vende la mayor cantidad de dulces, el primero es, claro, Halloween. Los huevos de chocolate populares vienen de la Europa del siglo XIX. Jelly beans llegaron a su popularidad
para la Pascua en los años 1930. ¿Sabía usted que cada año para la Pascua se hacen casi 16 billones de jelly beans? El dulce popular que no está hecho de chocolate llamado peeps se dio conocer en los años 1950. Al principio los peeps fueron hechos a mano, de sabor de malvaviscos y en forma de pollitos. Con el paso de tiempo se agregaron más sabores y formas diferentes. Por cierto, la compañía de dulces que trajo peeps al mundo fue fundada por inmigrante ruso llamado Sam Born en 1923. No importa si usted celebra la Resurrección de Cristo o simplemente la llegada de la primavera, Pascua es un día hermoso y lleno de la luz. Easter is almost here. A lot of countries around the world celebrate Easter. For example, in my country, Russia, Easter is still a month away. Russian Orthodox Church just started lent, there is still a long way to go before this most important celebration of the spring. As other countries we have our traditions. No, we don’t have Easter bunny or Easter baskets, but we do dye eggs. I am pretty sure that things are probably a lot different now, but when I was small I remember people used to boil their eggs with onion peel and that would somehow turn them this brownish orange color. Also, it is customary on Easter to tell everyone, “Christ has risen” and you will always receive an answer, “Indeed, He did.” People tell it to their family members, friends and just anyone else out there. Of course there are special Easter cakes and Kulich (Easter bread). This is just to give you an idea about Easter in Russia. But as any other foreigner in the United States, when I came here I also asked myself numerous times about the Easter bunny. Why a bunny? And what exactly a bunny has to do with Easter? So I decided to share with you what I found out about Easter traditions in the United States. Easter eggs: you might have asked yourself why in the world we dye eggs on Easter. Well, according to some it has a religious meaning to it. They say that eggs are symbol of Resur-
rection of Jesus Christ and it is dyed red in representation of the blood that Jesus Christ shed on the cross. Another explanation for dyeing eggs talks about Mary Magdalene, who was the first person to see Jesus after the Resurrection. They say she was holding a plain white egg in her hand when she was proclaiming to emperor the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The emperor told her that the Resurrection of Jesus is as likely as the egg she was holding turning red. The egg turned bright red while the emperor was still speaking. Whichever version you believe, I think they are both beautiful stories that created wonderful traditions for many Christians in the world. Easter baskets and Easter bunny: it is believed that the tradition of the Easter bunny came to the United States in 1700s with German immigrants that settled in Pennsylvania. They brought the tradition called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws” to the United States. According to this tradition children made nests were the creature with this name would lay colored eggs. Over time it was adopted
by everyone and now many children know that the Easter bunny will come at night and leave a basket full of treats for them to enjoy. Easter candy: Easter candy is a fairly modern tradition. Did you know that Easter is second to Halloween when it comes to candy sales? The popular chocolate eggs come from XIX century Europe. Jelly beans became a huge part of Easter in the 1930s. Did you know that close to 16 billion jelly beans are made each year for Easter? The popular (not chocolate) Easter candy peeps came into the mix in the 1950s. The original peeps were handmade, marshmallow flavored chicks but later more flavors and shapes were introduced. By the way, the candy manufacturer that gave peeps to the world was founded in 1923 by Russian immigrant Sam Born. So whether you celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ or just the arrival of the Spring, Easter is a bright and warm holiday. I hope, like me, you now understand a little more about the traditions of the Easter Bunny and dyed eggs. Happy Easter, everyone!

El esfuerzo de 20 años para construir el nuevo puente de la carretera interestatal 74 que cruzará el río Misisipi entre Moline y Bettendorf está entrando en la recta final, se espera que el trabajo de esta temporada va a limpiar el camino para la construcción del puente que se programa para empezar en el 2017. El nuevo puente va estar al este del puente existente. El puente tendrá dos arcos, cada uno de ellos tendrá cuatro carriles y costados completos. También habrá un camino recreativo y mirador en el medio. Se espera que el puente se abra al tráfico en el 2020 y el puente existente será derribado en el 2021. Doug Rick, el encargado del proyecto de I-74 del Departamento de Transportación de Iowa, dijo que dos proyectos están en progreso en Betttendorf y se espera que sean terminados para el año 2016. El proyecto se trata de cambiar U.S. Highway 67 de State Street al norte y reconstrucción de la porción de Kimberly Road. “Este es el plan – para terminar al final de este año,” él dijo. El tercer proyecto del 2016 es el traslado de mejillones que están en peligro de extinción del camino del puente nuevo, se espera que este proyecto vaya a empezar este verano, él dijo. El proyecto completo incluye el puente, realineación de la carretera, rampas nuevas y trabajo relacionado con ellos entre Avenue of the Cities en Moline y 53rd Street en Davenport y su costo esperado es de $1.2 mil millones. Trabajadores van a construir la infraestructura del puente nuevo. • Algún tipo de preparación para la carretera interestatal 74 será hecha en la tierra en ambos Illinois e Iowa. Los ejemplos incluyen trabajo de drenaje en el lado de Iowa y construcción de muros de retención en el lado de Illinois. Building a Bridge: I-74 project moves into home stretch By Anthony Watt Courtesy of The Dispatch The 20-year effort to build a new Interstate 74 bridge across the Mississippi River between Moline and Bettendorf is moving into the home stretch, with this season’s work expected to clear the way for construction of the actual bridge to begin in 2017. The new bridge will run just east of the existing one. It will have two spans, each with four lanes and full shoulders. There also will be a recreation trail and an overlook in the middle. It is expected to open in 2020, with the existing bridge to be demolished in 2021. Doug Rick, I-74 project manager for the Iowa Department of Transportation, said two related projects underway in Bettendorf are expected to be completed in 2016. They are the switching of U.S. Highway 67 from State Street to the north and the rebuilding of a portion of Kimberly Road. “That’s the plan — to be done by the end of this year,” he said. A third 2016 project — the relocation of endangered mussels in the path of the new bridge — is expected this summer, he said. The total project, including the bridge, realignment of the highway, new ramps and related work between Avenue of the Cities in Moline and 53rd Street in Davenport, is expected to cost $1.2 billion. About $140 million has been spent or committed so far. The revenue for the project is coming from federal transportation funds that Illinois and Iowa receive each year. The property acquisition in the
Iowa portions of the project area is mostly complete, Mr. Rick said. There are some minor acquisitions that still need done around Lincoln and Middle roads, but they are related to the 2019 phase of the project. John Wegmeyer, of the Illinois Department of Transportation, said roughly 60 acquisitions were deemed necessary in the Illinois portion of the project area, and about half of them have been made. The remainder range from small strips of land to properties with structures on them. Here’s the timeline for completing the work: 2016: • Shift U.S. 67 off Bettendorf’s State Street to a newly built roadway, because the new bridge will cut State Street in two. The goal is to have the work done before December. • Rebuild Kimberly Road in Bettendorf between the last I-74 Iowa exit and Grant Street to fit the new interchange being created for the bridge. When this phase is completed, Kimberly will be a two-way street down to Grant Street. The work is going on simultaneously with the State Street project, but is expected to be completed before State Street is finished. • Relocate endangered river mussels from the construction zone. The mussel beds are primarily around Sylvan Slough, though beds in Iowa also must be moved. Where the mussels will be moved still is being worked out. • No 2016 ramp closures are expected in relation to the replacement project, but some may be necessary for maintenance work on the existing bridge. More details of the
maintenance project, being carried out by Illinois, is expected in about a week. • Demolition of the old train depot in downtown Moline is expected this summer. 2017-2018: • Bidding on construction of the new bridge and at least some of the land-based infrastructure work is scheduled in the spring. The full bid schedule for the later phases of the project still is being worked out. • The main work will be in the Mississippi River beginning in the summer of 2017. Workers will be building the new bridge’s framework. • Some preparation work will be done to Interstate 74 on land in Illinois and Iowa. Examples include drainage work on the Iowa side and building retaining walls on the Illinois side. The highway will remain open, but lane closures can be expected. 2019: • The Iowa-bound stretch of Interstate 74 from Avenue of the Cities to Middle Road will be closed for refurbishment and adjustment to fit the new bridge. -- The old bridge itself will remain open, but Iowa-bound motorists will have to exit I-74 at Avenue of the Cities, make their way to downtown Moline and
get on the bridge there. In Iowa, they will have to exit at State Street to detour along Kimberly and Middle roads to get back on I-74. • The Iowa-bound span of the new bridge id expected to be completed by November or December. 2020: • The remaining Illinois-bound lanes and connections will be refurbished and adjusted to fit the new span. • The new Illinois-bound span will be completed and opened to traffic. Completion is expected in November or December. • While these two portions of the project are underway, the Iowa-bound span of the new bridge will be used for two-way traffic. • The old bridge still will be accessible to local traffic. • There will be some ramp closures as new ones are built. For example, the final Iowa exit is to be moved, so people will have to get off at Middle Road to reach downtown Bettendorf during parts of this phase. 2021: With the new bridge operational, the old bridge will be demolished. The work will involve a combination of explosives and the use of machines and crews.

Latino Americans: 500 Years of History at the Moline Public Library By Anastassia Zvoryguina
Every year Libraries across the nation celebrate National Library Week in April. This year National Library Week is from April 10 to 16. The Moline Public Library will present a series of very special events that not only celebrate National Library Week, but also celebrate Latino Americans and their impact on history and culture of The United States of America. Latino Americans: 500 Years of History will present a month filled with interesting events and presentations. In the past the Moline Public Library had offered month long events, but this year the focus is on Latinos. “We were awarded a $3,000 Latino Americans: 500 Years of Latino History Grant, in recognition of our proposal highlighting the importance and influence of Latino culture and history in our Moline and greater Quad Cities community,” Lisa Powell Williams, Adult/Young Adult Services Coordinator from Mo-
line Public Library, explained. Williams also said that since the 2016 theme for celebration of National Library Week is Libraries Transform Lives, this particular month long event was very fitting to this theme. “Our first program will be a screening of Foreigners in Their Own Land (1565-1880), part of Latino American PBS film series. A discussion facilitated by St. Ambrose professor, Dr. Arturo Meijide, will follow,” Williams told us. The first viewing and discussion is set for April 13 at 5:30 PM. While this is the first event of the series, the Moline Public Library will also have an exhibit called Mi Casa Nueva: QC Mexican Heritage that will be available for everyone to enjoy from April 1 to April 30. The artifacts and photographs displayed at the exhibit were borrowed from the Putnam Museum and they show the richness of the Mexican American history in the Quad Cities area. On Monday April 25 at 6:30
PM participants can enjoy beautiful sounds of Latino music presented by Calle Sur a Panamanian-Columbian folk duo. Calle Sur will delight listeners with sounds of culturally diverse music from Latin America. On Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 PM come over to the library and be ready to enjoy a presentation by the Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico. “Their presentation will beautifully share the culture of Mexico through music and dance,” Lisa Powell Williams said about the presentation. And since April 30 is Children’s Day expect Saturday, April 30 to be filled with children’s laughter. Participants can bring their children from 10 AM to 3 PM to celebrate El Día de Los Niños/El día de los Libros. There will be a lot of fun activities for children and whole families. This same day at 2 PM the month long series of events Latino Americans: 500 Years of History will end with a perfor-
mance from Glenview Middle School Mariachi Band. The performance will include narrations in both Spanish and English. “These talented young musicians are learning to connect music and culture in their performance,” Williams said about Glenview Middle School Mariachi Band. They say April is a rainy month of the year, so why stay home and watch the rain when you can go to the library and enjoy a variety of interesting events that not only will teach you something interesting about history of your hometown, but also it will simply be a lot of fun. By Jess Medina Congratulations to the United Township High School Panthers for a season no one could have imagined. Coach Ryan Webber led U.T. to a winning season in his first year as the head Panther. Previously, Webber taught at Moline until his position was cut and then moved to Warren High school for three years. In a stroke of luck or pure genius, U.T. hired Webber as the head varsity basketball coach, and the wheels were set in motion. Although transition isn’t always smooth, the young men of the 2015-2016 basketball team bought into Webber‘s system and practiced diligently. The wins began to add up, momentum began to build, and with it came a resurgence of the fan base: the students’ Panther Posse, the parents, and the fans in the community. They started to believe. Something was happening. Panther Pride was back, along with respect for the players and the desire for the student body to unite behind their team. They were all in this ride together, and it would become for a journey they will always remember. I don’t know what expectations were coming into the season but a winning record and a chance at a championship might have exceeded the hopes of most Panthers. This group of coaches and young men achieved far more than we could have imagined. The fan base now has a belief that we no longer have seasons where we are rebuilding - just simply reloading. The Panthers ended the regular season 20-6. The twenty wins were more than U.T. has
seen in many years. The post—season journey begins. The Post-season tournament action commenced in Normal against Normal High School. The game was closer than expected as U.T. battled through overtime to defeat Normal Community 53-47. Jacob Meeske led the Panthers with 24 points, and Tray Buchanon had 22. Many of the Panther faithful and the Panther Posse made the trip team to support their team. Fans became ‘fanatics’. The Panthers and coaches, the parents, the fan busses, the cheerleaders, and Panther fans returned to Normal for the Regional Championship against Normal West. Coach Webber likes to call Tray Buchanon his ”big time money player.“ With the Panthers down 39-36, Buchanon scored seven unanswered points to give U.T. the lead and some breathing room. The U.T. Panthers won a Regional Championship, defeating Normal West 61 to 49. Now even the non- believers were starting to feel this could be something special. Plenty of hurdles remained before them, and it was ‘one game at a time’. Continues next page

Both players and fans were in unfamiliar territory. The Sectional semi-final was scheduled to take place in Collinsville, but both U.T. and Rock Island requested the game to be moved closer. The l.H.S.A. agreed, and the game was moved to a neutral but familiar site, Wharton Field House in Moline. This game garnered the attention it deserved from Quad-City area fans and media. Could this game sell out as was the case years ago when basketball was king? Packed or full houses were the norm and not the exception back then. Those of us who can remember those days cherish the memories of that time. The excitement was building and fans throughout the
Quad-Cities were buying tickets at a fast pace. The game was a sellout of 5,200, and it proved to be yet another game for the history books. The fan bases of both Rock Island and U.T. were exemplary in their support and sportsmanship. Did I mention it was a great game? Both teams left it all on the court as the game was double overtime thriller with U.T. winning 55-54 in what most people were calling an instant classic. Included in that was Rocky’s dramatic buzzer-beater 3 point shot to send the game into overtime. During the first overtime, U.T. missed three critical foul shots, which set the stage for yet another overtime. In the second overtime, with U.T. ahead 55-54, Rock Island had an opportunity for the game-winning

shot. They missed their last two shots, and U.T. came away with the victory. U.T. victorious, the Panthers and their fans looked to their next challenge. But the long trip to Collinsville was not to be denied, and U.T. now faced Alton, who had already upset Quincy and Edwardsville. Again the Panther Posse and fans turned out in strong numbers to support their Panthers 244 miles away. Collinsville High School was a great host, anticipating the masse of Panther fans with food and goodies donated by their community for the fans. Fired up by their fans, the Panthers went on a 15-5 run to finish the game and win 50-48. In what would be their season finale, the Panthers picked the wrong night for cold shooting

as they lost to Chicago Simeon 66—36 in the ISU Normal super sectional. Coach Webber and the players greatly appreciated the support they received this year from the students and fans. Despite not making it to the state tournament, the 2015-16 Panther basketball season was a success! It was undeniable that the Panther faithful would support the team if they could win. I hope the excitement catches on with the other sports and programs at U.T. This could have a snowball effect on everything that is U.T. Panther Pride is back. Thank you, Coach Webber and players, for your hard work and the Pride you have instilled in the school and the communities they represent.

La temporada de basquetbol mágica de United Township Por Jess Medina Felicidades al equipo Panthers de la Escuela Preparatoria United Township por una temporada que nadie pudo imaginar. Durante su primer año como el entrenador principal, Ryan Webber llevó a U.T. a la temporada de victoria. Previamente, Webber trabajó en Moline hasta que su posición ya no estaba disponible, después él se fue a la escuela preparatoria Warren donde se quedó por tres años. A lo mejor fue suerte o puede ser que era una decisión genial pero U.T. contrató a Webber para la posición del entrenador principal del equipo de basquetbol, y desde entonces las cosas empezaron a cambiar. Claro, los cambios no son siempre fáciles, pero los jóvenes del equipo de basquetbol de 20152016 trataron el sistema de Webber y practicaron diligentemente. Las victorias empezaron a venir y ganaban momentum y con esto regresaron los fans: los estudiantes de la “Panther Posse”, los padres y fans de la comunidad. Ellos empezaron a creer. Algo estaba pasando. El orgullo Panther ha regresado, junto con el respeto por los jugadores y deseo de los estudiantes a unirse detrás de su equipo. Todos ellos estaban juntos en esto, y esto se convertirá en una travesía que ellos siempre iban a recordar. Ambos equipos dieron lo mejor de ellos ya que el juego llego hasta los tiempos extra 2 veces. Al final U.T. ganó 55-54 y mucha gente le llamó un clásico instantáneo. Esto incluye el tiro de Rocky de 3 puntos que llevó el juego al primer tiempo extra. Durante el primer tiempo extra U.T. perdió tres tiros libres críticos que llevó el juego a su segunda prórroga. En el segundo tiempo extra U.T. lideraba 55-54, Rock Island tuvo la oportunidad de hacer el tiro de la victoria. Ellos no lo pudieron hacer y U.T. ganó el juego. U.T. victorioso, los Panthers y sus fans estaban esperando por el siguiente desafío. Pero no debemos de olvidar de su travesía larga hacia Collinsville y ahora U.T. enfrentó a Alton, el cual ya había ganado a Quincy y Edwardswille. Una vez más la Panther Posse y fans vinieron en números record para apoyar a su equipo viajando 224 millas hasta el lugar del juego. La Preparatoria Collinsville fue un buen anfitrión, ellos esperaron que muchos fans de los Panthers fueran a venir y su comunidad donó comida y regalitos a los fans de los Panthers. Animados por los fans, los Panthers empezaron con una racha para llevar al marcador 15-5 y acabaron ganando 50-48. Pero el final de temporada los Panthers escogieron una mala noche para enfriarse en los tiros y perdieron el juego a Chicago Simeon 66-36 en ISU Normal súper seccional. El entrenador Webber y los jugadores agradecen mucho el apoyo que ellos recibieron este año de parte de los estudiantes y fans. A pesar de no llegar al torneo estatal, la temporada de basquetbol de 2015-2016 fue todo un éxito. No se puede negar que los fans de los Panthers iban a apoyar el equipo si ellos podían ganar. Espero que este entusiasmo siga con otros deportes y programas en U.T. Puede ser que esto tenga un efecto de bola de nieve y los Panthers pueden renovar su espíritu de competencia. Gracias entrenador Webber y jugadores por su trabajo duro y el orgullo que ustedes inculcaron en la escuela y las comunidades que ustedes representan.

Americanos Latinos: 500 Años de Historia Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Cada año en abril las bibliotecas de toda la nación celebran la Semana Nacional de Bibliotecas. Este año la Semana Nacional de Bibliotecas es entre el 10 y 16 de abril. La Biblioteca Pública de Moline decidió presentar una serie de eventos especiales que además de celebrar la Semana Nacional de Bibliotecas también celebran los americanos latinos y su impacto en la historia y cultura de los Estados Unidos. Americanos Latinos: 500 Años de Historia presentará un mes lleno de eventos y presentaciones. En el pasado la Biblioteca Pública de Moline ha ofrecido diferentes series de eventos que duraban un mes, pero este año el enfoque es los latinos. “Hemos recibido una subvención para Americanos Latinos: 500 años de la Historia Latina de $3,000, reconociendo nuestra propuesta de demostrar la importancia e influencia de la cultura e historia latina en nuestra ciudad de Moline y la comunidad de los Quad Cities,” Lisa Powell Williams, Coordinadora de Servicios para Adultos y Jóvenes de la Biblioteca Pública
de Moline, explicó. Williams también contó que el tema principal de la celebración de la Semana Nacional de Bibliotecas para el año 2016 es Bibliotecas Transforman Vidas, este tema en particular queda bien con los eventos del mes programados. “El primer programa será el estreno de Foreigners in Their Own Land (1565-1880) (Extranjeros en su Propia Tierra), parte de serie de películas de PBS sobre americanos latinos. Los objetos y fotografías presentados en esta exposición fueron prestados por el Museo Putnam y estos demuestran la riqueza de la historia mexicana americana
en el área de los Quad Cities. El lunes 25 de abril a las 6:30 PM los participantes podrán disfrutar de los sonidos hermosos de la música latina en una presentación de Calle Sur, un dúo musical panameño colombiano. Calle Sur va a deleitar el público con sonidos de música de América Latina culturalmente diversa. El jueves 28 de abril a las 6:30 PM venga a la biblioteca para disfrutar de una presentación por el Ballet Folklórico de los Quad Cities. “Su presentación comparte hermosamente la cultura de México por medio de música y baile,” Lisa Powell Williams contó sobre la presentación. Y como el 30 de abril es el Día de los Niños espere que el sábado 30 de abril este lleno de risas de los pequeños. Los participantes pueden traer niños a la biblioteca desde las 10 AM hasta las 3 PM para celebrar el Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros. David went to study to Brazil, while his brother took some time to go to Turkey. “After returning from our exchange program, we continued working with my father at the car lot while going to college,” David Niño told us. “Soon after, my father moved to Mexico and that is when our entrepreneurial instincts kicked in.” The brothers took over the business. Of course the road to success is never easy. “Being a business owner comes with many responsibilities. Keeping up with 3 locations requires dedication, focus, patience (especially with family), team building and communication skills. We constantly think of ways to innovate and improve our business. We do that by listening to our customers’ needs and wants,” David Niño shared his thoughts about learning to be successful business owner. “From a young age our parents taught us the importance of working hard and not giving up. I think that ultimately is what allowed us to overcome many of our challenges.” But before the challenge of running 3 locations, the brothers started by looking around and learning that the residents of the Quad Cities needed a place where they could get dependable cars that would be sold at reasonable prices. With this goal in mind they started to make big changes in D&S Auto Sales. “We opened up a second location connected to a service
shop, allowing us to give a warranty all our vehicles free of charge,” David Niño told us about the changes they implemented. “With the second location we realized we needed more help so we convinced our younger brother Alex and our mother, Marcia, to work with us as well.” That was the beginning of the business becoming family owned and operated. After opening a third location, now in Davenport, IA, the brothers invited their younger sister and David’s wife join the team. In addition, on summers, when their father comes over for visit, he also helps out with the business. D&S Auto Sales is not just any family business; here everyone is treated as part of one big family. “Not only does our family make this possible, but our drivers and certified mechanics. It’s very important to be able to trust those around you. At D&S Auto Sales, we are a big family,” David Niño shares. Being family owned and operated, D&S Auto Sales also prides itself in being very customer oriented. Here customers are treated as customers and not as credit history numbers. Customer can leave the lot with a car after paying a small down payment that can range anywhere between $500 and $1,000. All vehicles have a 30 day guarantee and customers can set up payment schedule. The service shop is for customers only. Customers in need of service can bring their vehicles to services shop, even after it was paid off. D&S Auto Sales also accepts trade-ins. David Niño indicated that customers can even trade the cars bought here before they are paid off.
“We also have a referral reward program for existing customers,” David Niño shares the perks of being D&S Auto Sales customer. “Not only do we price our vehicles competitively, we also finance them at 0% interest. There are absolutely no hidden fees, not even standard doc fee. If you don’t have extra money for your tax, title and license fees, we can pay for them up-front and work it in to your first payments. We also handle all of the work. Once you leave our office, there is no need to go to the DMV. We will issue the temporary plates immediately.” D&S Auto Sales goes out of the way to meet the needs of customers who are in process of buying a car. They even have consultants that work closely with customer to help them choose the best vehicle according their needs. D&S Auto Sales started as a small car lot, but David and Steve Niño took over and turned it into a successful family owned and customer oriented business with three different locations in the Quad Cities. They did not do it along; thanks to the whole family this business has many more successes ahead of it. “Opportunities arise when we least expect it. D&S Auto Sales un Verdadero Negocio Familiar Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Tener un negocio es un trabajo de 24 horas al día y 365 días al año. Claro es de gran ayuda cuando la familia apoya y ayudan a los dueños en su camino hacia el éxito. Aquí queremos compartir la historia de dos hermanos que son dueños de negocio y con ayuda de su familia ellos están en camino recto hacia un gran éxito. David y Steve Niño, dueños y directores de D&S Auto Sales, nunca imaginaban o esperaban el manejar el negocio ellos. Los hermanos vienen de una familia mexicana americana grande. David Niño recuerda que cuando él era niño su familia vivió por un tiempo en México, he ahí donde ellos perfeccionaron su español, pero los hermanos crecieron en Hampton, IL. El padre de los hermanos Niño empezó el negocio en el 2006. Los hermanos empezaron a trabajar allí cuando David tenía 17 años y Steve tenía 18. Ellos dejaron de trabajar con su padre por un tiempo y se fueron a estudiar al extranjero. David fue a Brasil, mientras que su hermano fue a Turquía. “Al regresar de nuestros estudios, continuamos trabajando con nuestro padre en el negocio mientras que asistíamos al colegio,” David Niño nos contó. “Pronto mi padre se mudó a México y fue entonces cuando nos despertaron los instintos de empresario.” Los hermanos se encargaron del negocio. Claro el camino hacia el éxito no fue fácil. “Ser un hombre de negocio viene con muchas responsabilidades. Tratar de mantener 3 locales requiere dedicación,
enfoque, paciencia (especialmente en lo que se trata de la familia), trabajo en equipo y comunicación. Constantemente pensamos de las maneras para innovar y mejorar nuestro negocio. Lo hacemos tomando en cuenta las necesidades y deseos de nuestros clientes,” David Niño compartió sus pensamientos sobre como él está aprendiendo a ser un empresario exitoso. “Desde una temprana edad nuestros padres nos enseñaron la importancia del trabajo duro y de seguir el camino sin rendirse. Creo que al final del día este era el consejo que mas nos ayudó a vencer muchos obstáculos en nuestro camino.” Pero antes de manejar 3 locales, los hermanos empezaron
investigando y aprendiendo que los residentes de los Quad Cities necesitan un lugar donde ellos pueden encontrar carros seguros a precios razonables. Con esta meta en la mente ellos empezaron a hacer cambios grandes en D&S Auto Sales. “Abrimos el segundo local conectado con el taller de servicio, esto nos permitió el ofrecer garantía sin costo a todos nuestros automóviles,” David Niño nos contó sobre los cambios que ellos implementaron. “Con el segundo local hemos entendido que necesitamos más ayuda y entonces convencimos a nuestro hermano Alex y nuestra madre, Marcia, a trabajar con nosotros.” Este era el principio del nego-

A veces las macetas son simples macetas. Otras veces unas macetas pueden ser mucho más que esto. De hecho, una simple maceta puede ayudar a promover la unidad entre vecinos. El Centro de Justicia Social Palomares, Comunidades Globales, Habitat y Boys & Girls Club se han unido para ofrecer a los residentes de la vecindad Floreciente una oportunidad de unirse y celebrar su vecindario. Desde noviembre del 2005 la Comunidad Global ha tenido juntas comunitarias con los residentes del vecindario Floreci-
ente. El resultado de esas juntas es la idea de macetas. “La idea es que estas van a fortalecer el sentimiento de unidad en la comunidad porque todos tendrán una maceta similar en sus patios,” Annisa Wanat, directora del programa, explicó. “Además de trabajar con los vecinos y macetas también [estamos] trabajando con negocios pidiéndoles que ‘adopten’ una maceta para ponerla en frente de su negocio.” Esas macetas están disponibles solo para los residentes y negocios de Floreciente. Si usted vive en Floreciente usted puede inscribirse para decorar su
maceta y llevarla a su casa para poner en su patio. El 7 de mayo los vecinos están invitados a unirse a otros residentes del vecindario en el Boys & Girls Club, ubicado en 338 6th St en Moline, para pintar sus macetas para llevarlas a casa. Sometimes a flower pot is just a flower pot. Other times it can be more than that. In fact, a simple flower pot can end up promoting togetherness among neighbors. Palomares Social Justice Center, Global Communities, Habitat and Boys and Girls Club came together to offer residents of the Floreciente neighborhood in Moline to come together and celebrate their neighborhood. Since November of 2015 Global Communities has hold community meetings for the Flo-
reciente neighborhood residents. This idea of flower pots was a result of those meetings. “The idea is that it will strengthen the feeling of togetherness in the community by everyone having a similar piece of art on their front porches,” Annisa Wanat, program director, explained. “In addition to working with neighbors on flower pots, [we are] working with businesses to ‘adopt’ flower pots for in front of their stores.” These flower pots are available to Floreciente residents and businesses only.
