Queridos Amigos de la escuela Ericsson El año escolar del 2014-15 está por terminar y estamos preparando para cerrar nuestro edificio en junio del 2015. Lentamente hemos ayudado con la transición de las familias de Ericsson a su nueva escuela, Lincoln Irving. Este año escolar nuestros niños del kínder se unieron con los nuevos amigos y muchas de las familias de Ericsson que ya estaban listas y se fueron arriba de la colina “up the hill.” La decisión de cerrar Ericsson fue difícil, pero llegamos a ver las ventajas de este cambio. Nuestros estudiantes van a ser parte de Dual Language Academy (Academia de Doble Idioma) en Lincoln Irving, aprendiendo en ambos ingles y español desde kínder hasta la preparatoria sin importar el idioma que se habla en la casa. Ellos van a estar preparados para ser estudiantes bilingües educados en ambos idiomas del siglo XXI. Estos estudiantes van a ser parte de una población más grande y diversa conociendo amigos nuevos de otras culturas a temprana edad. Esperemos que ellos puedan crear relaciones de largo plazo que les ayudarán a ser exitosos cuando ellos sigan a la escuela secundaria John Deere. También sabemos que nuestros maestros podrán colaborar con colegas en el nivel de su propio grado en una escuela más grande porque habrá 2 o 3 salones de cada grado. Con aumento de colaboración, articulación y planificación entre maestros, nuestros estudiantes van a tener el mejor apoyo. También
tendremos más horas para enfermeras, consejeros, trabajadores sociales y psicólogos en una escuela más grande donde las familias pueden recibir ayuda o las referencias necesarias. También nos da gusto de anunciar que Lincoln Irving tendrá la directora bilingüe la Srta. Blanca Leal. Usted ha sido parte importante de la comunidad escolar de Ericsson. A lo largo de los años usted ayudó a nuestros estudiantes y sus familias de numerosas y generosas maneras. Usted nos dio su tiempo o dinero y por eso llegamos mas cerca al punto de igualdad entre “los que tiene y los que no tienen.” Cuando pedí que donaran chamarras, gorros, guantes y etc., ustedes me preguntaron, “¿Cuanto?,” cuando les pedí útiles a mitad del año escolar, ustedes me contestaron, “claro que sí, aquí los tiene,” cuando una familia necesitó su ayuda con comida, ropa y lugar donde quedarse, ustedes me dijeron, “encontraremos la manera,” cuando les pedí computadoras portátiles o iPads para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a competir en la sociedad global, usted me contestaron, “¿cuanto necesita?” Esos son pocos ejemplos del apoyo tremendo que yo recibí como administradora de la escuela donde las necesidades básicas deben de estar satisfechas antes de empezar el aprendizaje.

Dance 4 Diversity es un evento presentado por hermanos Juárez y Miss Iowa, Aly Olson. Desde hace tiempo Eric Juárez, entrenador personal, y Emmanuel Juárez, CEO de Prestige Music, tuvieron una idea del evento que combina sus pasiones por ejercicio y música. Un día Eric Juárez escuchó a Aly Olson, Miss Iowa, hablar sobre su dedicación de promover la diversidad. Fue entonces cuando a el se le ocurrió Dance 4 Diversity. Eric Juárez se comunicó con la Srta. Olsen y le preguntó si ella quisiera ser parte de este evento. Miss Iowa aceptó la invitación y así nació Dance 4 Diversity. Dance 4 Diversity será el viernes 22 de mayo de 4:30 PM a 9:30 PM en el Teen Center del Boys & Girls Club ubicado en 1122 5th Ave en Moline. La entrada es gratis y esta es la lista de los presentadores: RusHour, QC Motion Respiro Belly Dance Team, Mallards Cheerlearders, Megan Van Dyke, Miguel Rosas va a hacer el corte de pelo en vivo, Atlanta Dawn va a crear una obra de arte en vivo. Baile corre en sus venas. Megan Van Dyke empezó a bailar cuando apenas tenia 5 años de edad y desde entonces ella no ha parado. De hecho, ella bailó con diferentes compañías de baile locales y a la edad de 14 años ella ya estaba enseñando y haciendo su propia coreografía. Ella ha ganado muchos diferentes premios por su coreografía y múltiples becas por medio de convenciones de baile diferentes. Ella es una joven talentosa de los Quad Cities. No vayas a perderte su presentación en Dance 4 Diversity.
So todavía no has escuchado sobre ellos, entonces vives debajo de una roca en el medio del desierto. RusHour es un dúo de hip hop que consiste de Juan Valtierra y Curtis Bell. Esos dos bailarines son de East Moline y ya tienen 5 años bailando juntos. Además de entrenarse por 12 años cada día, también ellos se han presentado durante 40 diferentes eventos comunitarios, hablaron, enseñaron y presentaron en 20 diferentes escuelas. Valtierra y Bell no son bailarines cualesquiera. Ellos son ejemplo para seguir y toman su papel en serio. Recientemente, el baile del vientre se fusionó con la cultura americana. Muchos desfrutan este estilo de baile único. Tagheed Karadsheh comenzó Quad City Motion Respiro Belly Dance Team y ahora su hija Samantha Karadsheh tomó su lugar. Ella ofrece programas de ejercicios y talleres para jóvenes y adultos. También, ella enseña su equipo a presentar en diferentes lugares de los Quad Cities. What else more do you need to make your Friday night a fun night? Get your friends together and check out Dance 4 Diversity, an event that celebrates a diverse community through art. Dance 4 Diversity is an event brought to you by the Juarez brothers and Miss Iowa, Aly Olson. Eric Juarez, a fitness instructor, and Emmanuel Juarez, CEO of Prestige Music, had an idea for an event that combines their passions for fitness and music. One day Eric Juarez was listening to Aly Olsen, Miss Iowa, talk about her dedication to promote diversity. That was the day he came up with idea of Dance 4 Diversity. Eric Juarez did not waste any time and asked Ms. Olsen if she wanted to help. Miss Iowa accepted and Dance 4 Diversity was born. Dance 4 Diversity will be on Friday, May 22 from 4:30 to 9:30 at Teen Center, located at 1122 5th Ave, Moline. Admission is free and

RusHour, a hip hop duo, consists of Juan Valtierra and Curtis Bell. These two are from East Moline and they have been dancing for five years. On top of training for 12 hours a day these dancers also have performed at 40 different community events, spoke, taught and performed in more than 20 different schools. Valtierra and Bell are not just dancers they are role models and they take very seriously their role.

In recent years belly dance has fused into American culture. Many enjoy learning this unique style of dance. Quad City Motion Respiro Belly Dance Team was started by Tagheed Karadsheh and now her Hola America News daughter Samantha Karadsheh took the reins. She offers workout classes and workshops for youth and Father Fredi and Father Chase will be leaving adults. Also, she teaches the team Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Silvis. to perform around the Quad Cities. Whether a beginner or advanced dancer, everyone is welcomed at Quad City Motion Respiro Belly Dance Team. Dance runs through her veins. Megan Van Dyke started dancing when she was only 5 years old and she hasn’t stop since. In fact, not only have she danced with different local dance companies, also, at the age of 14 she was already teaching and doing her own choreography. She won many awards for her choreography and received many scholarships through different dance conventions. A Quad Cities own talented young woman. Don’t miss her at Dance 4 Diversity.
In June when the Diocese of Peoria has new assignments, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Silvis will have a new pastor. The highlight of the Navy Week celebration at the Hero Street Memorial Park, Silvis, Ill., on Wednesday May 6, 2015, was the re-enlistment ceremony of U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Monica Santiago. El Padre Guillermo Treviño Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Decisiones importantes rinden resultados diferentes. Esos resultados pueden convertirse en buenas experiencias para recordar o una manera diferente de ver la vida. El Diácono Guillermo Treviño entiende muy bien el poder de las decisiones importantes y sus resultados. Al Diácono Treviño lo ordenarán como sacerdote el 6 de junio de este año. El nunca imaginó que iba a tomar este camino particular en su vida. De hecho, cuando era pequeño él soñaba con ser el Presidente de los Estados Unidos, pero Dios tuvo otros planes para él. Treviño nació en San Antonio, TX y se mudó a los Quad Cities junto con su familia cuando él apenas tenía 3 años de edad. Algunos dirían que este cambio de Texas a Illinois fue algo desafortunado porque fue aquí que averiguaron que la cabeza de esta familia estaba enfermo y fue aquí donde falleció el querido padre y esposo. “No recuerdo mucho de mi niñez pero cuando se enfermó mi padre en el año 2000 y la muerte de mi padre fue un tiempo muy difícil para mí y la poca fe que tenía se me fue,” Treviño nos explicó los eventos tristes del pasado. Siendo un joven adolescente, para Treviño era algo difícil el afrontar la muerte de su padre. Él perdió 60 días de escuela y parecía que él estaba a punto de dejar todo caer. Gracias a su dedicada y cariñosa madre él pudo continuar y para el último año de la preparatoria él se postuló para el Presidente de la Clase del Último Año de la Preparatoria de Moline. En aquel tiempo él conoció a un joven que se convertiría en su mejor amigo y este joven le preguntó a Treviño una pregunta que transformaría la forma de pensar de Treviño de aquel tiempo. Su amigo le preguntó cuál era la posición de Treviño en lo que se trata de aborto. Treviño no tenia respuesta alguna, entonces, su amigo le dio un libro de catecismo y después de leerlo Treviño le dijo que él no cree que Dios le escucha y su amigo le contestó que Dios escucha las oraciones de toda la gente.
“Esa respuesta cambió mi vida, ¡Dios me escucha! Sentí algo que nunca había sentido antes,” Treviño recuerda este sentimiento cálido que le llenó el corazón. Treviño decidió que él quería ser confirmado y le dijeron que tenía que escoger entre ser confirmado con los muchachitos del octavo grado o con los adultos de RCIA (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos por sus siglas en ingles). Desafortunadamente Treviño se sintió demasiado orgulloso para ser confirmado con los niños de octavo grado y entonces decidió de pensarlo más. Mientras su mejor amigo lo llevo a visitar diferentes iglesias y seminarios junto con él, ya que el amigo estaba seriamente considerando el ser sacerdote. “él decidió que esto no era para él, pero a mi me comenzó a gustar la idea de un día convertirme en sacerdote,” Treviño comenta. Era un punto de inflexión para Treviño en su viaje espiritual. También era entonces cuando la gente alrededor de él empezó a animarlo. Él conoció a Padre Rudy Juárez quien lo llevó con el Padre Bob Gruss (quien ahora es el Obispo), pero le dijeron una y otra vez que él tiene que confirmarse antes de tomar el siguiente paso. Mientras que debatía con su orgullo y deseo de ser sacerdote, Treviño asistía al Colegio Black Hawk. Él se graduó en el 2007 con el titulo técnico en ciencias políticas. También, un año antes de graduación, en el 2006, Treviño finalmente dejo su orgullo a un lado y decidió confirmarse. Le dijeron lo mismo de antes, lo podía hacer con los muchachos de octavo grado o con los adultos de RCIA. “Tuve mi confirmación con los niños del octavo grado y yo era más alto de todos,” Treviño dice entre risas. Ahora que ya se resolvió el problema de confirmación Treviño por fin pudo tomar el siguiente paso para continuar con su sueño de dedicar su vida a Dios. En el 2007 Treviño decidió aplicar para el sacerdocio pero no le dieron la solicitud. “La verdad es que me sentí con el corazón roto, pero mirándolo bien yo no estaba listo y nada pasa sin razón al-
guna,” Treviño explica el resultado de su decisión. Aunque era algo muy triste para Treviño él trató de seguir adelante y ver que haría en el futuro. Pero Dios trabaja de las maneras misteriosas y mientras que Treviño estaba en Postville y Marshalltown en Iowa, ayudando la gente después de las redadas de inmigración, él se encontró unan vez más con el Padre Rudy Juarez, conoció al Padre Marv Mottet quien, aunque retirado, estaba muy involucrado y ayudaba en la Iglesia de Santa Maria en Davenport y el Padre Jerry Pilon quien enterró a su padre. Ellos junto con algunos amigos de Treviño continuaron a animar a este joven a no dejar el sueño de ser sacerdote. Treviño escuchó los consejos de ellos y lleno su solicitud en la Diócesis de Davenport. En el otoño del 2008 le dieron la buena noticia, lo aceptaron. En los siguientes años Treviño estudió mucho. “Los estudios fueron difíciles pero también me enriquecieron. Puse un letrero en mi cuarto en Conception y lo tuve en mi pared por los siete años de seminario, lo hice siguiendo el ejemplo de la pregunta de San Bernard: ‘Guillermo, ¿Por que estoy aquí? La gente de Dios de Davenport animo y persevera,” Treviño nos compartió estos recuerdos. Han pasado años desde el día cuando Treviño decidió el ser sacerdote y este 6 de junio por fin él podrá alcanzar este escalón en su viaje espiritual. ¿Que seguirá en el futuro del Padre Treviño? “Mi meta de sacerdote es cooperar con la gracia de Dios. Fui bendecido con lo que Él me dio. Espero poder compartir las bendiciones que recibí. Lo que quiero lograr es ser como un puente para la gente. Hablo ingles y español. Me gustan todos los deportes, hasta disfruto NASCAR y las luchas. Crecí en la parte oeste de Moline y voy a ser sacerdote, soy la prueba viviente que con ayuda de Dios todo es posible,” Treviño dijo. Cada día las decisiones afectan nuestras vidas de miles maneras. Cuando apenas era un jovencito de preparatoria Guillermo Treviño decidió a empezar su viaje espiritual. Era una decisión correcta que
seguramente va a crear muchos resultados positivos tanto para él y su familia como para todos aquellos alrededor de él. Felicidades Diácono Guillermo Treviño por su viaje espiritual exitoso. El sábado 6 de junio ordenarán sacerdote a Guillermo Treviño en la Catedral del Sagrado Corazón en Davenport, Iowa. El día de su ordenación la Diócesis de Davenport le notificara en que Iglesia del este de Iowa el se quedará. Father Guillermo Treviño By Anastassia Zvoryguina
Important decisions have different outcomes. Those outcomes can either turn into experience to remember or a way to see things in a different light. Deacon Guillermo Treviño understands very well the power of a decision and its outcome. Deacon Guillermo Treviño, to be ordained a Priest on June 6 of this year, never imagined he would be following this particular path in his life. In fact, as a young man he dreamed of becoming the President of the United States someday, but God had other plans for him. Treviño was born in San Antonio, TX and he moved to the Quad Cities when he was three years old. Some would call the move from Texas to Illinois as an unfortunate one since it was here that his family learned that the head of the family was sick and it was here that they lost a father and a husband. “I don’t remember much growing up but when my dad got sick, in the year 2000, and my dad’s death, was very hard on me and what little faith I had went away,” Treviño explains the sad events of the past.
As any young man of High School age, Treviño had a very difficult time dealing with the loss of his father. He missed more than 60 days of school and it seemed as he was on the verge of giving up. Thanks to his dedicated and loving mother he continued on and by his senior year of High School he ran for Moline High School Senior Class President. Around that time he met a man who would become his best friend in life and that man asked Treviño a question that would lead to a revolutionary thought for Treviño at that time. His friend asked him about his position on abortion and Treviño had no answer, so his friend gives him catechism and after reading it Treviño told to his friend that he did not believe that God listens to him and his friend answered that God listens to everybody’s prayer. “That answer changed my life, God listens to me! I felt in a way I hadn’t before,” Treviño remembers that warm feeling that took over him. Treviño decided that he wanted to get confirmed and he was told that he had a choice to either do it with the eighth graders or with
adults in RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). Unfortunately, Treviño felt too proud to be confirmed along with the eighth graders and so he decided to think about it more. Meanwhile, his best friend took him along with him to visit various churches and seminaries, as he was entertaining an idea of becoming a priest one day. “While he decided it was not for him, I was starting to like the thought of becoming a priest,” Treviño comments. That was a turning point for Treviño’s faith journey. That was also the time that people around him started to encourage him. He met with Father Rudy Juarez who took him to Father Bob Gruss (who now is a Bishop), but he was told again and again he had to get confirmed before taking any more steps. While dealing with his pride and desire to become a priest Treviño attended Black Hawk College, He graduated in 2007 with an Associate Degree in Political Science. Also, a year earlier, in 2006, Treviño finally let go of his pride and decided to get confirmed. He was told the same thing as years before; he could do it with eighth graders or the RCIA. “I was confirmed with the eighth graders and was the tallest,” Treviño tells with a laugh. Now that confirmation was finally taken care of Treviño could at last pursue his dream of priesthood. So in 2007 he decided to apply for priesthood, but he did not get an application. “That really broke my heart, but looking back at it, I was not ready and everything happens for a reason,” Treviño explains the outcome of this decision. Even though it was very upsetting for Treviño he was trying to move on and see what he would do next. But God works in mysterious ways and while he was helping people after the immigration raids in Postville and Marshalltown in Iowa he saw Father Rudy Juarez again and he met Father Marv Mottet who, even retired, was every involved and was helping in St. Mary’s Church in Davenport and Father Jerry Pilon, who buried his father. All of them along with other of Treviño’s friends continued encouraging this young man to not give up his dream of becoming a priest. Treviño listened to their advice and he applied for the Dioceses of Davenport. In the fall of 2008 he got the great news, he was accepted. For the next few years Treviño would be studying hard. “Studies were difficult but they were enriching. I put a sign in my room at Conception that I kept all seven years of seminary, it is
modeled after St. Bernard’s question: ‘Guillermo, why am I here? The people of God in Davenport, hang in there, persevere’,” Treviño shared his memories. Years passed since Treviño made a decision to become a priest one day and on June 6 he will finally reach an important milestone in his faith journey. What is next for the future Father Treviño? “My goal as a priest is to cooperate with God’s grace. I have been blessed with what He has given me. I hope to share the wonderful blessings I have been given. The thing I want to accomplish is to be a bridge for people. I speak English and Spanish. I like just about every sport, even NASCAR and pro wrestling. I grew up in the West End of Moline and am going to be a priest, I am living proof that with God all things are possible,” Treviño said. Decisions daily affect our lives in a myriad ways. When he was still coming out of his teen years Guillermo Treviño decided to start his faith journey. It was a right decision that surely will bring a lot of positive outcomes not only for him and his family, but for everyone whose is around him. Congratulations Deacon Guillermo Treviño on you successful faith journey so far. On Saturday June 6 Guillermo Treviño will be ordained a Priest at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa. The day of his ordination the Diocese of Davenport will assign him to a Church in Eastern Iowa. In celebration of his ordination Father Guillermo Treviño will hold Masses at the following locations: June 7 at 11 am at St. Mary Church in Moline June 13 and 14 every Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Iowa City, Iowa June 20 at 5 pm at Prince of Peace Church in Clinton, Iowa June 21 at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Church in Hewitt, Iowa And on June 28 two Masses at the Church of St. James in Highwood, Illinois Photo by Tar Macias

Algunas carreras más populares en los Quad Cities como la Carrera de 5 km de Pascua Easter Egg Scramble y The Quad Cities Distance Classic ya han pasado, pero en los próximos meses habrá todavía más carreras y eventos. Pero en vez de solo darles la lista de carreras pensé que mejor les presento con artículo que les ayudará a pasar su temporada de carreras con estilo y seguridad. Y hablando de las aplicaciones o apps, hay muchas aplicaciones que usted puede usar cuando corre para medir sus carreras y seguir su progreso. RunKeeper, y CheeringSquad por Nike son
los más populares para empezar. Yo uso MapMyRun y personalmente me encanta que esta app es fácil de usar y no tienes que presionar muchos botones antes y durante de la carrera. Pero si usted quiere pagar por mas, entones el reloj deportivo Garmin Forerunner es muy bueno. Y lo que se trata de lo demás, pantalones cortos confortables para correr que absorban humedad pero que van sobre la rodilla, los pantalones cortos de basquetbol no son muy buenos para corredores. Personalmente, creo que menos es mejor. Cuando usted empieza a entrenarse para el maratón las cosas necesarias e importantes son lentes de sol, gorras, y pastillas de gel de energía. Puede ser que usted corra una milla por primera vez o puede ser que usted este entrenando para su primer maratón, correr es algo que usted puede hacer cualquier hora del día y cualquier día del año. Adiós Escuela Ericsson Por Diácono Guillermo Treviño, ex alumno de Ericsson
Pronto la campana sonará por última vez en la Escuela Primaria Ericsson. Lo único que queda es la última oportunidad para los alumnos antiguos a caminar los pasillos de la escuela haciendo memoria de cada recuerdo que ellos tienen en este edificio. El viernes 22 de mayo del 2015 la escuela de Ericsson tendrá su última Fiesta/Open House de 3:30 PM hasta 7:00 PM. Habrá comida, diversión, brincolines, juegos, pinta caritas, DJ Guerrero, viajes en el autobús MetroLink, y etc. Todos están bienvenidos a este evento. Estudiantes antiguos pueden caminar los pasillos y toda la escuela recordando y compartiendo sus historias únicas de la escuela. También los ex alumnos podrán llevarse las fotos del salón de la fama. Este evento es donde los miembros de la comunidad tendrán la oportunidad de recordar y decir adiós a la escuela que marcó sus vidas. Para recordar la escuela primaria Ericsson Hola America invitó a los miembros de la comunidad a compartir sus memorias hermosas de la escuela. Aquí están algunos de sus recuerdos. Con el cierre reciente de la escuela, es fácil de olvidar de toda su historia pero Rico Navarro quien es la cuarta generación que asistió Ericsson de su familia dijo que Ericsson fue construida a lo largo de la Cuarta Avenida porque todas las factorías estaban en esta área. “Ericsson fue una escuela de vecindario donde iban los niños de muchas diferentes razas. Hubo muchos voluntarios y esfuerzos de toda la comunidad, hubo equipos de béisbol y padres que trabajaban en las factorías. Antes de los años 1980 hubo varias generaciones de familias que iban a esta escuela. Ericsson fue una escuela estupenda y hubo muchas actividades. Muchas gente trabajadora salió de esta escuela,” Navarro compartió sus recuerdos. El recuerdo más especial de Rico Navarro era la tradición maravillosa del equipo de béisbol del Club de los Papas que fue exitoso entre los 1950 y los 1990.
“300 personas de la parte oeste de Moline venían a vernos jugar. Jugadores de los equipos, mi papa era el entrenador, todavía visitan a mi padre en su casa,” él dijo. Joel Esparza también tiene recuerdos bonitos del equipo de béisbol. “Era una escuela de vecindario estupenda para los niños de la parte oeste de Moline. En especial ellos podían caminar a la escuela, Todos nos miraban mal diciéndonos que nuestra escuela es del barrio marginal porque todos los muchachos mexicanos de esta escuela estaban en las pandillas. Pero nosotros los niños, cuando yo fue allí en los años 90, les enseñamos que no éramos así. Les enseñamos de manera académica y por medio de los deportes, en especial el béisbol. Béisbol era una cosa que me gustaba más de Ericsson. De hecho esto me recuerda de la película Hardball con Keanu Reeves. En la película el actor trata de entrenar todos esos niñitos del vecindario para ayudarles estar lejos de los problemas. Era igual en nuestro equipo de béisbol los Ericsson Hawks. Ahora nosotros jugábamos bien. Empezamos en el último lugar y llegamos a ser número uno, los campeones. Hasta mi mama nos patrocinó hasta que yo fui a la secundaria. Por eso Ericsson para mi es el corazón, el alma y la gloria. Siempre se fuerte,” Esparza contó. Con el aumento de la población de inmigrantes hispanos en los años 80 la escuela agregó programas bilingües en ingles y español. Bibiana Gutiérrez quien iba a la escuela en los años 90 dijo, “Ericsson significa mucho para mí, es algo muy especial, me ayudó a ser la persona que soy hoy. Allí tuve los mejores maestros, aquellos maestros que te motivan a salir adelante en el futuro. Ellos me impactaron mucho en la vida y yo todavía sigo en comunicación con ellos.” Ella agregó, “la mayoría de mis mejores recuerdos vienen de Ericsson como por ejemplo nuestra ceremonia trimestral de premios, nuestro programa navideño, ser parte de “Patrol”, programas después de escuela, hacer momias de pollos en el quinto grado y otras cosas. Estoy feliz que mis hijos fueron a la misma escuela
y ellos también tienen recuerdos bonitos. Es triste saber que Ericsson va a cerrar este año, pero yo sé que nunca voy a olvidar estos recuerdos.” Ericsson fue un mundo lleno de oportunidades para María González. “Sin importar de done venimos o cuanto tenemos los maestros y empleados nos dieron buenas oportunidades y se aseguraron de que nos traten de la misma manera como los demás estudiantes de otras escuelas. Empezando de las becas para campamento en la Universidad de Macomb y acabando con los programas de alcance a la comunidad para zapatos nuevos,” González nos compartió. Leesa Hicks Delgado dijo que ella recuerda cuando su familia se mudo de Misisipi y sus padres estaban buscando un lugar para vivir porque aquel entonces ellos vivían con una amiga de su madre. “Nos mudamos a la parte oeste de Moline y yo fui a Ericsson. La Sra. Carlton fue mi maestra de kínder. Yo crecí en ese vecindario, tuve luchas personales pero Ericsson era mi casa. Los maestros estaban allí cuando los necesitaba y ellos entendían mis problemas. Realmente lo creo porque gracias a ellos soy la persona que soy hoy. Gracias por todo su apoyo Sra. V, Sra. Healy, Sr. Stout,, Sr. Calrton y Sra. Nelson,” Hicks Delgado compartió su experiencia personal. Ericsson era una escuela donde nosotros
les importábamos a todos los maestros, Ashley Simpson dijo. “Cada maestro escuchaba y si no entendías algo siempre había alguien para ayudarte sin importar si estabas en su aula o no. No existía el fracaso, si no aprendiste ellos cambiaban la manera de enseñarte. Ellos nunca culpaban a los niños por no aprender correctamente. Ellos te enseñaban con tanto orgullo, ellos estaban felices de ver a cada uno de los estudiantes. Han pasado 15 años pero ellos todavía me recuerdan y les encanta saber sobre como me va en la vida y todavía me preguntan sobre mis hermanos. Siempre apoyándome sin importar que hago en mi vida. No creo que alguna otra escuela pueda compararse con tanta pasión/emoción que mis maestros tuvieron para nosotros. Gracias a cada uno de esos maestros,” Simpson recuerda. La primaria de Ericsson ayudó a crecer a muchas personas maravillosas quienes ahora agradecen su experiencia. Los recuerdos no están en el edificio, pero viven en los corazones de la gente y eso significa que mucha gente tendrá recuerdos lindos de la primaria Ericsson hasta después de que se cierran las puertas para nunca abrir. Soon the bell will ring for the last time at Ericsson Elementary School. Hola America News The only thing left is the last opportunity for former students to walk the empty hallways and soak up every last bit of the memories they might have in the building. Friday May 22, 2015 Ericsson Elementary Yesenia Flores will have its last Open House/Fiesta Ericsson was the first thing I knew when my from 3:30 to 7:00 PM. There will be family and I moved to the quad cities, that’s why food, fun, bouncy houses, games, it means so much to me. One of the first things I remember face painting, D.J. Guerrero, Metro seeing when moving in was the Ericsson parade in full effect Link Bus Rides, etc. Everyone is marching in front of our street and to know that that would welcomed to this event. Former stube the school I would be attending made me even more dents can walk the halls and grounds excited to be a part of it! This is the place where I met some of the most amazing and of the school remembering and shargreatest people/friends that are still a huge part of my life to ing their unique stories about the school. I lived right down the block from Ericsson, my favorite With the recent closing of the teacher was Mr. Stout school, it is easy to forget all the hisSusy Acosta tory of this school but Rico Navarro who is a 4th generation Ericsson Home and family. Teachers really cared about their students alumni said Ericsson was built along at Ericsson. Only the Best worked there. No other school or organization is or ever will be as important, famfamilies going to that school. Club baseball team which did well in the 1950’s to the 1990’s. “We had 300 people from the West of Moline, coming to watch us play. Players from the teams, my dad coached still come to my dad’s house today,” he said. Joel Esparza also had great memories of the baseball team. “It was a very awesome neighborhood school for the West end kid’s. Especially walking distance. Everybody down graded us that it was a ghetto school cuz all the Mexican kids went there n the gangs. But we as kids when I went there in the early 90’s showed them that we are not. We showed them academically and in sports especially baseball. That’s one thing I did love about Ericsson was the baseball, it kind of reminds me of the movie Hard ball with Keanu reeves trying to be a coach to all these little kids from the neighborhood to keep them out of trouble. That was us the Ericsson Hawks baseball team. Now you know what we were pretty darn good from going from dead last to being #1 to a champion. Even my mom sponsored us until I went to middle school. So Ericsson to me
was heart, guts and glory. Always be tough,” Esparza told. With an increase of Hispanic immigrants in the 1980’s school added more bilingual programs in English and Spanish. Bibiana Gutierrez, who attended the school in the 1990’s said, “Ericsson means a lot to me, it’s very special, it helped make me the person I am now. There I had some of the best teachers, ones who motivate you to become something big someday! They such a big impact in my life that I still keep in touch with some of them.” She added, “a lot of my best memories also come from Ericsson, like our quarterly award ceremony, our Christmas program, being part of patrol, The after school sports program, making mummies out of chickens in 5th grade along with many others. I was happy to have had my kids go there too so they too share some of the special memories. It makes me very sad to know that Ericsson will be closing after this school year, but I know that my memories made there will last forever!” continues next page

Dear Friends of Ericsson School The school year 2014-15 is coming to an end and we are making the final preparations for the closing of our building this June 2015. We have been slowly transitioning the Ericsson families to their new home school, Lincoln Irving. Our Kindergarteners have joined their new friends this school year and many of the Ericsson families that were ready, have already made the move “up the hill.” Though the decision to close Ericsson was a difficult one, we have come to see the advantages the change will create. Our students will be a part of the Dual Language Academy at Lincoln Irving, learning in English and Spanish from Kindergarten through their high school years, no matter what language is spoken in the home. They will be better prepared for the 21st Century as true bilingual, biliterate students. Students will be a part of a larger, more diverse population making friends outside of their culture at a much younger age. Our hope is that they build long lasting relationships that will help them be successful when they move on to John Deere Middle School. We also know that at a larger school, our teachers will have colleagues to collaborate with at their own grade level because there will be 2 or 3 sections of each grade. With the increase in collaboration, articulation and planning between teachers, our students will be better served. There will also be an increase in nursing, counseling, social worker, and psychologists hours at the larger school where families can get the help or referrals needed. We are also happy to announce that Lincoln Irving will be led by a bilingual principal, Mrs. Blanca Leal. You have been an important part of the Ericsson School Community. Throughout the years, you have helped our students and their families in numerous, very generous ways.
You have given of your time, money and it is because of you that we have worked to level the playing field between “the haves and have not’s.” When I asked for winter coats, hat, gloves, etc. you answered “how many?,” when I asked for mid-year school supplies, you said “sure, here they are”, when a family needed help with food, clothing or shelter, you told me “you’d find a way,” when I asked for laptops or iPads to help our students compete in a global society, you said “how much do you need?” These are but a few examples of the tremendous outpouring of support I have had as the administrator of a school where basic needs had to be met before learning could happen. The school doors may be closing soon here at Ericsson, but the students and their families will continue to need your help. Please consider continuing your support at Lincoln Irving Elementary, located at 1015 16th Avenue, 309-743-1612. Mrs. Leal and staff would appreciate your help. Good friends and people who came from many different backgrounds but many seemed to enjoy coming to school each day. Growing up on the west end of Moline it provided a place where I spent countless summers with my brother Matt Loete and many friends playing basketball, soccer or football on the blacktop. Also who could forget the great carnivals each spring and the Halloween party each year with the costume contests. It was a great place to grow up. Teresa Villagomez Proud to be a Moliner! I have great memories there. Thankful for all the educators who where there for me. For all the support we had in our dads club softball team. It was a huge impact in my life. Ericsson was a world of opportunity for Maria Gonzalez. “No matter where we came from, or how poor we were, the teachers and staff gave us all great opportunities and made sure that we were treated just as equal as the rest of the students from other schools. From awarding scholarships to attend camp at the University in Macomb to reaching out to the community for programs for new shoes,” Gonzalez shared. Leesa Hicks Delgado said she remembers when they moved here from Mississippi and her parents were looking for a place to live since they were living with a friend of her mother. “We moved to west end Moline and I started at Ericsson. Mrs. Carlton was my kindergarten teacher. I grew up in that neighborhood and had my struggles but Ericsson was my home. The teachers were there for me and understood things I was going through. I truly believe it is because of them I am the person I am today! Thank you Mrs. V, Mr. Healy, Mt. Stout, Mr. Carlton and Mrs. Nelson for all your support,” Hicks Delgado shared her personal experience. Ericsson was a school where every teacher cared, Ashley Simpson said. “Every teacher listened and if you

didn’t understand something someone anyone was there to help no matter if you were in their class or not there was no failing if you failed then they changed how they were teaching they never blame the children for not learning correctly. They taught you with so much pride they are happy to see each and every one of their students even now they still remember me after almost 15 years and love the updates on life and ask how my brothers and sisters are. Always supportive not matter what I’m doing in life. I don’t think any school can compare how much passion/excitement my teachers had for us to learn. Thanks to each and every one of those teacher,” Simpson remembers. Ericsson Elementary raised a lot of wonderful people who are now thankful for this great experience. The memories are not in the building, but rather in the hearts of people, that means that many will always have beautiful recollections of Ericsson Elementary even the doors of the school are closed for good. Adios Ericsson Elementary and thank you for the memories.
Ericsson was the first school that was permanent in my life, before the 3rd grade I had been to 7 other schools. It feels like home to me Sandra Gomez Lule Coming from a different state to start at a new school isn’t always easy I only attended 5th and 6th grade at Ericsson but those 2 years were great! I made such good friends that I’m still close to until this day. Mr. Stout was such a great teacher. I still remember reading Where the Red Fern Grows.

So You Want to be a Runner? By Nicholas Cunningham The spike in temperature and packing up your jeans and coats for the year can only mean one thing. The season of running is upon us! Some popular races in the Quad Cities like The Easter Egg Scramble 5k and The Quad Cities Distance Classic have already come and gone, but there are plenty more races and events to look forward to in the coming summer months. But instead of just giving you a list of what races to sign up for, I thought I would give you a refresher article to make sure you have everything you need to make your running this summer safe and stylish. If famed Olympian long distance- runner, Steve “Pre” Prefontaine were still alive today, he might have changed the lyrics of Megan Trainor’s song, All About That Bass, to All About Those Shoes. Shoes are the most important and pretty much the only thing you have to worry about as a runner. Running Wild, www. runningwildusa.com, a premiere running store in the Quad Cities offers one on one consulting to help you find the perfect fit and shoe style. I run with Asics and will probably never run in another brand again as I love them and feel like they are the shoe made for my running style. After you have your shoes, the rest is pretty much up to you. As smart phones have become a norm these days, you probably want to get a good armband that keeps your phone snug and tight to your arm as you run. I have recently switched from the neoprene sleeve to the Quad Lock Mounting System, www.quadlockcase.com, which lets me click the actual phone case into the arm band for easy access to apps and phone calls during my run. Speaking of apps, there are many run applications you can use on your runs to log your runs and track your progress. RunKeeper, and Cheering Squad by Nike+ are a couple popular ones to start with. I use MapMyRun and personally love how easy it is to use and that you
don’t have to push many buttons before and during your run. If you want to shell out a few extra clams, a sports watch like the Garmin Forerunner is the way to go. As the rest goes, lined, moisture wicking shorts that go way above you knee, sorry basketball players, are the most comfortable to wear on a run. And personally I think less is more until you start marathon training where sunglasses, hats and energy gel tabs are of utmost importance. Whether you are running a mile for a first time or training for you first marathon, running is something you can do anytime of the day and any day of the year. With the proper equipment and the mindset that you can finish any run you start, you will be crossing the finish line in no time. June 20th The Micro Brew Mile www.microbrewmile.com (Craft beers waiting for you at the finish line. What more could you ask for in a race.) June 27th Pioneer Trailblazer www.allemanhighschool.org July 4th Firecracker Run www.firecrackerrun.com (This one is challenging but a must if you are a runner. You can do a 5k or 10k. Heat and hills. Happy 4th of July!)
July 25th Bix 7 www.bix7.com (Nationally recognized as one of the best runs of the summer, the Bix 7 is one the largest races in our area. It also has one of the largest post-race parties too!) Aug 6th Freedom Run www.freedomrun5k.org (One of the few week night runs, this race pays homage to those who have served and are still serving our country. Course is very similar to the Firecracker Run, so if you did that one, you’ll love this one.) Sept 12th It’s Glow Time 5k www.itsglowtime5k.com It’s a rave, it’s a race, and it’s an event that you need to do this fall. Break out your glow sticks for this awesome 5k!) Sept 20th HABLO Hustle Sept 27th QC Marathon www.qcmarathon.org (The Super Bowl of runs in the Quad Cities. Whether you run 1 mile or 26, this event takes over downtown Moline and is one that you should start training for now!) Oct 24th Lagomarcino’s Cocoa Beano 5k www.lagomarcinos.com (Unlimited Lagomarcino’s hot chocolate awaits you as you run this scenic 5k through the Village of East Davenport.)
Nov 14th Blackhawk College 5k Hustle www.cornbelt.org (Run around the Blackhawk College campus for this fun and usually chilly 5k) Nov 26th Turkey Trot www.scottcountyfamilyy.org (Before you sit down for your Thanksgiving lunch or dinner, make sure you get your miles in. This 5k is fun for the whole family and is definitely challenging for those advanced runners as you start on the bottom of Brady Street Hill and keep going up!)

2015 Paul Lensmeyer Future Leaders Scholarship

LTC (Ret.) Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch was the latest speaker at the Multicultural Speaker Series by the QC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Thank you to the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and Hispanic Business Leaders Committee for partnering up with us to bring a such great speaker. Congratulations to Angela Salazar, recipient of the 2015 Paul Lensmeyer Future Leaders Scholarship. Angela is a student at Western Illinois University and is currently a bilingual teacher at East Moline School District.
More than 40 students ages 10-15 attended Noche de Ciencias – Science Night on Monday, May 4 at the Quad-Cities Campus. Science Night is a national program to promote knowledge and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Science Night is sponsored by Black Hawk College in collaboration with the John Deere Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Foundation (SHPE).

On May 5th, 2015 the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce’s (SVACC) and the Hispanic Business Leaders Committee (HBLC) hosted a presentation given by LTC (Ret.) Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch at Centennial Auditorium in Sterling, Illinois. LTC Kickbusch’s father was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire and her family lived in Sterling during the 1950’s. Known as “Silver City,” the boxcar settlement was an early home for Kickbusch’s parents and a source of inspiration for her visionary leadership.

Michael Alvarado of Davenport has been awarded The 2015 Tyler Ledezma Scholarship By Anastassia Zvoryguina
Michael Alvarado will be the first in his family to go to college. This senior from Assumption High School, Davenport, worked very hard for the opportunity of a higher education at St. Ambrose University. Alvarado will be studying physical therapy and playing baseball at St. Ambrose. Also, he is the proud recipient of the 2015 Tyler Ledezma Scholarship. The Tyler Ledezma scholarship was created to honor the memory of a young man who made mistake that cost him his life. In 2010 Tyler Ledezma of East Moline was driving without a seatbelt and even though he was not driving at a high speed, he lost control of his car and hit a tree. Since he was not wearing a seatbelt he was thrown out of the car and died on the way to the hospital. Tyler Ledezma loved playing baseball. To honor the memory of this young man, whose life was interrupted even before it had really begun, his family awards scholarships, hosts annual baseball tournament and educates everyone about the
importance of the use of the seatbelts. Michael Alvarado won the Tyler Ledezma scholarship this year. According to his mom, Tory Reyes, this scholarship is very meaningful to him because he can relate. Like Tyler, Michael is in High School, like Tyler, he loves baseball and like Tyler, Michael’s favorite baseball team is the Chicago Cubs. Tory said that her son expressed that he is very happy and thanks to this scholarship he will be able to play baseball in St. Ambrose University and he wants to do it in the memory of Tyler. Also, to always remember to be safe and as a part of Tyler Ledezma Scholarship, Michael signed a special pledge with his parents committing to always wear his seatbelt. “We are very honored,” Tory said of her son receiving the Tyler Ledezma Scholarship. Michael Alvarado is a good young man with a very bright future ahead of him. Thanks to his Tyler Ledezma Scholarship, Alvarado can get his college degree and make his parents even more proud. “My husband and I are very proud of him,” Tory said. Este estudiante del último año de la preparatoria en Assumption de Davenport, trabajó duro por ganarse esta oportunidad de estudiar en la Universidad de St. Ambrose. En la Universidad de St. Ambrose Alvarado estudiara terapia física y va a jugar beisbol. Este año él es el orgulloso ganador de la Beca Tyler Ledezma. La beca Tyler Ledezma fue creada en honor de un joven quien hizo un error que le costó la vida. En el 2010 Tyler Ledezma de East Moline, estaba manejando sin cinturón de seguridad y aunque el carro no iba a velocidad alta, él perdió el control y se estrelló con un árbol. El joven no traía su cinturón de seguridad puesto y por eso el choque lo tiró fuera del carro y se murió en el camino hacia el hospital. A Tyler Ledezma le encantaba jugar béisbol. En honor de la memoria de este joven, el cual su vida fue interrumpida antes de empezar, su familia regala becas, presenta el torneo de béisbol anual y educa a toda la gente sobre la importancia de uso de cinturones de seguridad.
Este año Michael Alvarado fue el ganador de la beca Tyler Ledezma. Según la mamá de Michael, Tory Reyes, esta beca significa algo importante para su hijo porque es algo con que él puede relacionarse. Al igual que Tyler, Michael es estudiante de preparatoria, igual a Tyler, Alvarado ama el béisbol, igual a Tyler, el equipo de béisbol favorito de Michael son los Chicago Cubs. Tory dijo que su hijo expresó que él esta muy contento y gracias a esta beca él podrá jugar béisbol en la Universidad de St. Ambrose y lo hará en memoria de Tyler. También, para recordar siempre de la seguridad y como parte de la beca de Tyler Ledezma, Michael firmó una promesa con sus padres de siempre usar el cinturón de seguridad. “Estamos muy honrados,” Tory dijo sobre el hecho de que su hijo recibió la beca de Tyler Ledezma. Michael Alvarado es un joven bueno y le espera un futuro muy exitoso. Gracias a la beca Tyler Ledezma Michael tendrá la oportunidad de ir a la universidad y enorgullecer a sus padres. “Mi esposo y yo estamos muy orgullosos de él,” Tory dijo.
