LULAC Iowa otorga miles en becas en todo el estado Cada año, la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos (LULAC) otorga miles de dólares en becas a estudiantes calificados en un esfuerzo por ayudarlos a alcanzar sus objetivos profesionales y universitarios. Desde su creación en 1929, LULAC ha considerado la educación como su prioridad número uno. En el 2019 los concilios de LULAC Iowa en todo el estado otorgaron aproximadamente $60,000 a 70 estudiantes en todo el estado. Seis Concilios participaron en el programa del Fondo Nacional de Becas de LULAC (LNSF) el año pasado. Este año, 9 concilio de LULAC en Iowa -Davenport, Fort Madison, Columbus Junction, West Liberty, Denison, Des Moines (2), Ottumwa e Iowa City junto con nuestro concilio hermano en Moline, IL obsequiaron más de $106,000 en becas a 127 estudiantes.

“El campo de juego se nivela con la educación”, dijo Michael Reyes, administrador del Concilio 10 de LULAC. “Durante más de 60 años nuestro concilio ha trabajado para apoyar los derechos civiles y la educación en nuestra comunidad, estas becas son una parte importante de ese esfuerzo”. Cada concilio otorga diferentes cantidades de becas dependiendo de la cantidad de dinero que recaudaron durante todo el año en sus propios eventos para recaudar fondos. Además, cada concilio tiene su propio comité de becas que revisa todas las solicitudes y las envía a la oficina de LNSF para su aprobación. El programa LNSF iguala la beca hasta un 60% más de los fondos proporcionados por cada concilio.

DENISON LULAC Denison recognized Tania Cortez and Aiden Meseck, 2 outstanding scholarship recipients, at their 1st annual LULAC scholarship Celebration. The LULAC Denison council was able to raise $1,200 thanks to the generosity of their community. Through LULAC’s matching grant program they were able to award two $960 scholarships!

LULAC Iowa awards thousands in scholarships throughout the state Each year the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to qualified students in an effort to help them achieve their career and college goals. Since its establishment in 1929, LULAC has considered education its number one priority. In 2019 LULAC Iowa councils across the state awarded approx. $60,000 to about 70 students statewide. Six Councils participated in the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) program that year. This year 9 LULAC Councils in Iowa -Davenport, Fort Madison, Columbus Junction, West Liberty, Denison, Des Moines (2), Ottumwa and Iowa City alongside our sister council in Moline, IL awarded over $106,000 in scholarships to 127 students.

“The playing field is leveled with education,” said Michael Reyes, LULAC Council 10 Administrator. “For over 60 years our council has worked to support civil rights and education in our community, these scholarship awards are an important part of that effort.” Each council awards different amounts of scholarships depending on the amount of money they raised throughout the year in their own fundraisers. Also each council has their own scholarship committee that reviews all applications and sends them to the LNSF office for approval. The LNSF program matches the scholarship up to 60% more of the funds provided by each council.

Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray exhibit at the Muscatine Art Center Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray, an exhibition of photographic portraits of Frida Kahlo, provides an intimate look at Mexico’s most prolific and well-known female artist. In May 1931 photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) traveled to Mexico on vacation where he met Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), a woman he would never forget. The two started a romance that continued on and off for the next ten years and a friendship that lasted until her death in 1954. Approximately forty photographic portraits taken by Muray of Kahlo comprise the exhibition. The photographs, dating from 1937 to 1946, explore Muray’s unique perspective; as Kahlo’s friend, lover, and confidant, Muray’s photographs bring to light Kahlo’s deep interest in her Mexican heritage, her life and the people with whom she shared a close friendship. Born in Hungary, Muray became a successful New York fashion and commercial photographer known for his portraits of celebrities, politicians, socialites, and artists. Having experimented with color in his work from early on, he found his most colorful model Kahlo. Kahlo was born in Coyocoán, Mexico City, Mexico and began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident. She became politically active and married fellow communist artist Diego Rivera. The Muscatine Art Center is located at 1314 Mulberry Avenue, Muscatine, Iowa and the Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray exhibit will run through August 28. LULAC Muscatine has partnered with the Muscatine Art Center for a special reception for this Frida Kahlo exhibition on August 12, 4-7pm at the Muscatine Art Center. You will be able to enjoy the Frida Kahlo exhibition for free and there will also be a Taco Truck FREE for the first 100 guests the day of the event. Other activities that day will be music by Tiny’s Tunes DJ and kids’ art activities.

Frida Kahlo: A través de la lente de Nickolas Muray en el Muscatine Art Center Frida Kahlo: A través de la lente de Nickolas Muray, una exposición de fotografías de Frida Kahlo, ofrece una mirada íntima a la artista femenina más prolífica y conocida de México. En mayo de 1931, el fotógrafo Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) viajó a México de vacaciones, donde conoció a Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), una mujer que nunca olvidaría. Ambos iniciaron un romance que continuó de forma intermitente durante los siguientes diez años y una amistad que duró hasta la muerte de ella en 1954. Justin Favela, un artista latino, transforma el Des Moines Art Center en una enorme piñata Por Nixson Benitez
Justin Favela, un artista latino que creó la exposición “Central American” en el Centro de Arte de Des Moines, envolvió su galería principal de arriba a abajo con la colorida textura de una piñata. Favela no sólo envolvió toda la sala, sino que también dio vida a una porción gigante de pizza que cuelga del techo como una piñata. “ La primera vez que pensé en esta exposición, los trabajadores agrícolas son trabajadores esenciales, y quería honrarlos. Pensé en ellos todo el tiempo para la exposición, así que aquí tienes este paisaje agrícola. Se vuelve más abstracto y se centra en la cosecha y en el centro de la galería, que es por lo que se conoce a Iowa, que es el maíz y todas las fotos que salen de aquí y todo el ganado”, dijo Favela, el artista. Favela es conocido por sus murales, esculturas de lowriders, la creación de enormes réplicas de alimentos, paisajes desérticos, y todo creado en el estilo de gigantescas piñatas La madre de Favela es guatemalteca y su padre es mexicano, lo que le ha llevado a conocer dos mundos diferentes. También me gusta que durante la inauguración estén aquí muchas de las personas que ayudaron y puedo ver que están orgullosas del trabajo que también hicieron”, dijo Favela. “Creo que el amor por la alegría en el trabajo y muchas veces los artistas latinos, en Estados Unidos, se espera que hagan arte sobre el trauma”, dijo Favela. Sin embargo, las piñatas pretenden invocar los recuerdos bonitos de la infancia. Favela derriba las paredes para llevar el mundo de la piñata a Des Moines, IA; cada vez que los miembros de la comunidad pasan por delante del arte, el papel maché se mueve con el viento que crea la gente al pasar, llamando su atención. era como un niño mexicano más porque ese es el latino por defecto en el suroeste. Cuando fui a la escuela preparatoria y a la universidad asumí este “Vale, supongo que sólo voy a ser mexicano””, dijo Favela. “Vine aquí desde los años 80 y 70 y, por supuesto, tuvimos que trabajar duro, pero también he sido muy afortunado. También he crecido en Estados Unidos y he ido a la escuela de arte. El mundo del arte es ahora mi mundo, así que soy una especie de artista intermedio. Expreso mi identidad personal a través de mis obras. Quiero contar la historia de mi familia y también quiero festejar a las comunidades latinas de Estados Unidos”, dijo Favela. A través de su exposición, Favela explora sus identidades y cómo Iowa ha influido en su trabajo desde su llegada. Por ejemplo, se inspiró mucho en la invención de la pizza de taco, tan popular en Iowa. La piñata de pizza requirió treinta voluntarios y semanas de creación. “Esta pizza fue muy divertida de hacer y resultó incluso mejor de lo que esperaba”, dijo Favela. La colorida exposición llevó muchas horas de trabajo y está basada en las obras que se encuentran en el Centro de Arte. Se enorgullece de ser Latinx y de traer su obra a Iowa porque no se suele pensar en los latinos en cuanto al arte. “El concepto que tienen muchos latinos es que al final del día si no te duele el cuerpo, ¿realmente trabajaste? Tienes que ser muy trabajador para que te vean como una persona valiosa, pero yo no creo que eso sea cierto. No tengo que romperme la espalda para tener valor”, dijo Favela. Y continúa: “Este programa abarca muchos temas que no explico a los espectadores. La cuestión es que he hecho esta exposición para mí, y eso viene a cuenta de hacer una obra de arte de éxito cuando haces que la obra sea tan personal que se convierta en universal”. Favela quiere alentar a los jóvenes de Iowa que quieran convertirse en artistas. “A los niños morenos y afroamericanos de Iowa les diría que muchas veces cuando paseamos por los museos no nos vemos realmente a nosotros mismos, y por eso espero que cuando la gente vea esta exposición, los niños puedan verse representados en una institución como ésta. Si yo fuera un niño y viera una piñata de pizza de taco y una exposición hecha con material con el que me relaciono, me habría hecho imaginar, incluso siendo un niño, que algún día podría ser un artista que expone en una institución como ésta que valora mi trabajo y mi vida”, dijo Favela. Favela no sólo ha impactado a la comunidad con su trabajo, sino también a muchas de las personas del Centro de Arte porque en cada ambiente en el que trabaja, hace que su trabajo sea divertido con risas, sonrisas y hasta emoción porque valora la ayuda. Se necesita mucho trabajo para crear exposiciones y Favela tenía muchos voluntarios a los que quería mantener contentos y con energía. No hay muchos artistas que tengan ese ánimo. AUGUST 15, 2021- DES MOINES,IAthe Latino Heritage Festival will kick-off the festivities in a couple weeks at the Iowa State Fair when they bring the Andy William & The Nebraska All Star an AfroCuban Jazz Orchestra. Which will be a taste of what the Latino Heritage Festival has in store for the September 25-26 event in Downtown Des Moines. The orchestra is made up of musicians from all over the world like Cuba, Panama, Venezuela, Mexico and America, and they all reside in Nebraska and offer different styles of Cuban music such as Latin Jazz, Danzón, Guaracha,Cha Cha Cha, Guaguanco, and some American rhythm too. Also, always doing tributes to Buena Vista Social Club of Cuba. Andy William and Nebraska All Stars are here to unite the universal language of music and welcome the diversity of the world.
They will be performing Sunday, Aug 15 at 7:00pm; this will take place at the Anne & Bill Riley Stage at the Iowa State Fair! Justin Favela a LatinX Artist turns the Des Moines Art Center into an enormous Piñata By Nixson Benitez
Justin Favela, a LatinX artist who created the exhibition, Central American at the Des Moines Arts Center wrapped their main gallery from top to bottom in the colorful texture of a piñata. Not only did Favela wrap the whole room, he also brought a giant slice of pizza to life and it hangs from the ceiling like a piñata. “When I was first thinking about this exhibition, farm workers are essential workers and I wanted to honor them. I was thinking about them full time for the show so here you have this agriculture landscape. It gets more abstract and kicks into the harvest and the center of the gallery; which is what Iowa is known about, which is the corn and all the photos that come from here and all the livestock.” said Favela, the artist. Favela is known for his murals, sculptures of lowriders, creating huge replicas of foods, desert landscapes, and all created in the style of gigantic piñatas Favela’s mother is from Guatemala and his father is Mexican, bringing him into two different worlds. In a lot of his exhibits, he explores both cultures and in this particular exhibition he highlighted the connections to Iowa. “When they walk into the building because it’s so much, like how long did they do it, how long did it take you, how much paper did you use, that’s usually the questions I usually get. Love seeing people’s reactions. Also love during the opening a lot of the people who helped out are here and I can see that they’re proud of the work that they also did.” said Favela. “I think, the love to experience joy in one’s work and a lot of times Latinx artists, in the United States, you’re expected to make art about trauma.” said Favela. However, the piñatas are meant to invoke memories of being a child. Favela tears down the walls to bring the world of a piñata into Des Moines, IA; everytime community members walk past the art, the paper mâché moves with the people as they create wind when they walk by, calling their attention. As Favela grew up in the United States, he explored how the mixture of cultures impacted many aspects of his life including his name. Favela remembers asking his mother why he was named Justin, an American name she couldn’t pronounce. “She responded,“ I don’t know Mijo, your tía said it was the most popular name the year you were born and so I gave it to you.” Many people in the Latinx community can relate when it comes down to having a mixture of identities. “I felt Guatemalteco my whole life, but in school I was like just another Mexican kid because that’s the default Latino in the southwest. When I went to high school and college I took on this “Okay I guess I am just going to be Mexican.’” said Favela. “I came here from the 80s and 70s and of course we
had to work hard, but I also have been very privileged. I’ve also grown up in the United States, and I went to art school. The art world is my world now and so I am kinda this in-between artist. I am kinda expressing my own personal identity through my own artwork. I want to tell my family’s story and I want to also celebrate Latinx communities throughout the United States,” said Favela. Through his exhibit Favela explores his identities as well as how Iowa has influenced his work since arriving. For example, he was very inspired by the invention of the taco pizza so popular in Iowa. The pizza piñata took thirty volunteers, and weeks to create “This pizza was so fun to make and turned out even better than I expected.” said Favela The colorful exhibit took many hours to create and is based on the works found throughout the Art Center. He takes pride in being Latinx and bringing his work to Iowa because Latinx people aren’t often thought of for art “The value that many Latinos have is that at the end of the day if your body doesn’t hurt, did you even work? You need to be a hard worker to be seen as a valuable person, but I don’t think that’s true. I don’t have to break my back to have value,” said Favela. He continues “This show encompasses a lot of topics that I don’t explicitly tell viewers about. The concern is that I made this show for me and that comes to making a successful artwork when you’re making the work so personal that it becomes universal.” Favela aims to encourage youth in Iowa who want to become artists. “To the Brown and Black kids of Iowa I would say that
a lot of times when we walk through museums we don’t really see ourselves, and so I hope when people see this exhibition, kids can see themselves being represented in an institution like this. If I was a kid and I saw a taco pizza piñata and an exhibition made of material that I related to; it would’ve given me the imagination even as a young kid to know that I could someday be an artist that shows in an institution like this that values my work and life.” said Favela. Favela has not only impacted the community with his work, but also many of the people in the Art Center because in every environment he works, he makes his work fun with laughs, smiles, and even excitement because he values the help. It takes a lot of work to create exhibitions and Favela had a lot of volunteers he wanted to keep happy and energized. Not a lot of artists set that tone. The Central American exhibit is in the Main Gallery at the Des Moines Art Center located at 4700 Grand Ave and is open to the public through October 24, 2021. Favela will be also doing a live virtual lecture talking more in detail about his work. Before launching his company and while working with other construction companies Mr. Zaragoza was helping to rebuild after the Derecho storm that hit Iowa hard in August of 2020. “I helped fix a lot of homes that were damaged by the derecho while I was working with Travis Grammer at Grams construction...” said Mr. Zaragoza Mr. Zaragoza explained that his mentor helped him to reach his dream of becoming a business owner through his advice. In May 1931, American photographer Muray (1892–1965) traveled to Mexico on vacation, where he met Kahlo (1907–1954), a woman he would never forget. Approximately forty photographic portraits, dating from 1937 to 1946, comprise the exhibition. The photographs bring to light Kahlo’s deep interest in her Mexican heritage, her life and the people with whom she shared close friendship.

This is the second title for the Menace in 16 years. They won their first title in 2005.
