Por qué la educación debe ser la nueva prioridad para nuestra nación Por Rick Najera Hace años me aceptaron en la Universidad del Sur de California (USC). Nadie de mi familia se había titulado antes. Mi papá trabajaba con hoja de metal y mi mamá era mesera. Buscaba ayuda financiera por todos lados, pero esta nunca llegó. Una noche, vi a mi padre, un hombre orgulloso y un veterano de guerra, hacer algo que nunca lo había visto hacer antes. Rogó. Rogó que se me concediera ayuda financiera. Escribió una carta que detallaba nuestra pobreza e incluyó las declaraciones fiscales para comprobarla. Había luchado por este país en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y más tarde en Vietnam. Simplemente no hubo dinero para la universidad. Nunca asistí a USC. Esto no quiere decir que me fue mal en mi trayectoria profesional. Me he presentado en Harvard y Stanford y muchas otras escuelas y universidades. Pero recuerdo haber pensado en aquel entonces que la educación era solamente para los ricos. Afortunadamente, Bernie Sanders no pi-

ensa así. Imaginen que todos tuvieran la oportunidad de estudiar una carrera universitaria. No sería una carga financiera para este país ni para los contribuyentes fiscales; sería una gran ganancia financiera. Así lo cree el Senador Sanders. Una persona con una licenciatura gana más dinero a lo largo de su vida que una persona que no la tiene. Esta persona ganará más ingresos tributables a la larga. Es más, una educación universitaria gratuita crearía más riqueza y más oportunidades, sobre todo para los latinos. El grupo más grande en los colegios comunitarios, más del 46%, está compuesto de latinos. Además, de los 55 millones de latinos en Estados Unidos, la tercera parte es menor a 18 años. La buena educación de los latinos como contrapeso a la cárcel decidirá nuestro futuro. Bernie Sanders pide educación superior gratuita para algunos; esto podría parecer inalcanzable. Algunos podrían preguntarse de dónde saldría el dinero para universidades gratuitas. El plan de Bernie es simple. Lo ganaríamos de las operaciones especula-

tivas en la bolsa de valores de Wall Street. Imaginen gravar a Wall Street en vez de rescatarlo. ¿Estudios universitarios gratuitos? Algunos podrían argumentar que Bernie Sanders no es práctico. No hace caso a lo que siempre se hace. Al principio ninguna idea nueva parece práctica. Pero todo gran líder nos pide tener sueños grandes, desde Martin Luther King, Jr. hasta John F. Kennedy y César Chávez. Claro, por ahora es un sueño, pero solo es un sueño hasta que se logre. Para entonces será una realidad. Tal vez tengan que cambiar algunas de nuestras prioridades. Tal vez como nación tengamos que ir a menos guerras, construir menos cárceles e intentar construir más universidades. Pero vale la pena luchar por el sueño de estudios universitarios gratuitos. Siga soñando en grande, Bernie. Siga luchando por mí y por millones de jóvenes latinos que lo apoyan. Juntos nuestros sueños pueden convertirse en realidad.

Why Education Needs to Be Our Nation’s New Priority By Rick Najera Years ago I was accepted to University of Southern California. None of my family had ever graduated from college. My dad was a sheet metal worker and my mom was a waitress. We looked and looked for financial aide but none came. One night, I saw my father, a proud man and war veteran, do something I had never seen him do. He begged. He begged for financial aide for me. He wrote a letter detailing our poverty with tax returns to prove it. He had served this country in World War II and later in Vietnam. We simply could not afford college. I never did go to U.S.C. That’s not to say I have not done well in my career. I have spoken at Harvard and

Stanford and many other colleges and universities. But I remember thinking back then that education was only for the rich. Luckily, Bernie Sanders does not. Imagine if everyone had a chance for a degree in higher education. It would not be a financial burden for this country and taxpayers, it would be a huge financial gain. That’s what Senator Sanders believes. A person with a college degree earns more money over their lifetime than a person without one. That person will earn more taxable income in the long run. In fact, free college education would be creating more wealth and opportunity, especially for Latinos. The highest group in community college, more than 46 percent, are Latinos.

Also of the 55 million Latinos in America, one third is under 18 years of age. How well Latinos are educated versus incarcerated will decide our future. Bernie Sanders is asking for free higher education and for some people, this may seem like “pie in the sky.” Some may ask where we would get these funds for free colleges. Bernie’s plan is simple. We would earn it from taxing Wall Street’s speculative transactions. Imagine taxing Wall Street instead of bailing it out. Free college education? Bernie Sanders, some might argue, is not being practical. He’s not following the norm. But no new idea is ever seen as practical at first. But every great leader asks us to dream big from Martin Luther King, Jr. to John F. Ken-

nedy to Cesar Chavez. Sure, it’s a dream now but it’s only a dream till we achieve it. Then it’s a reality. Maybe some of our priorities might have to change. Maybe as a nation we might have to go to a few less wars, build a few less prisons and try building a few more colleges. But that dream of free education is worth fighting for. Keep dreaming big, Bernie. Keep fighting for me and millions of young Latinos who are standing beside you. Together our dreams can become a reality. BETTENDORF – Ten area students are one step closer to achieving their academic goals. Each earned $1,000 to help pay for their college costs as part of the Ascentra Credit Union Scholarship Competition. El Consulado de México en Omaha tramita más de 200 documentos en su visita a Davenport Después de casi 13 horas de trabajo los muchachos del Consulado de México en Omaha en su visita a Davenport asistieron a más de 200 personas a tramitar sus pasaportes o matriculas consulares. En la visita Cónsul Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar tuvo una reunión con representantes de los colegios y universidades del área para ver la manera de cómo proporcionar mas becas a los estudiantes de nacionalidad mexicana a través de programas del gobierno de México. Hola Iowa junto con LULAC Davenport fueron los anfitriones de esta visita una vez mas este año. Gracias a la Cónsul Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar y su equipo. Y nos complace anunciar que la Cónsul se

Las candidatas a Reina LULAC 2016 Ya dio comienzo el concurso para coronar a la Reina LULAC 2016. Seis muchachas de los Quad Cities son las participantes que buscan seguir esta tradición de casi 6 décadas por parte de LULAC Davenport. Ellas son Kristal Caudillo de Silvis, IL; Maria Duran de Davenport, IA; Karina Flores de Moline, IL; Daisy Moran de Moline, IL; Thalia Ruiz de East Moline, IL y Fabiola Trujillo de East Moline, IL. Este año la Fiesta LULAC se incorporo a la Fiesta Viva Quad Cities. Esta colaboración le dará una mayor proyección a la competencia de la Reina de la Fiesta ya que la Reina será coronada durante VIVA QC. Viva Quad Cities será el sábado 10 de septiembre at el estacionamiento de Isle Casino en Bettendorf, IA. Recaudar fondos para las becas es el objetivo principal de la competencia de la Reina de la Fiesta, pero a lo largo de los años para muchos participantes

El año pasado Assata Caldwell la Reina de la Fiesta del 2013 se graduó de la Universidad de Iowa State donde ella estudió ilustración biológica pre médica. Por muchos años la competición de Reina de la Fiesta ayudó a mantener el programa de becas,” dijo Mike Reyes, Director de LULAC del Estado de Iowa y miembro de LULAC Davenport. Hasta la fecha el Concilio de Davenport ha otorgado casi $500,000 a alrededor 755 estudiantes del área. Meet the 2016 LULAC Queen Candidates The LULAC Queen Contest is underway and this year we have 6 Queen Candidates. They areKristal Caudillo of Silvis, IL; Maria Duran of Davenport, IA; Karina Flores of Moline, IL; Daisy Moran of Moline, IL; Thalia Ruiz of East Moline, IL & Fabiola Trujillo of East Moline, IL. This year the LULAC Fiesta will be different. It will be held in conjunction with the VIVA QC Fiesta on Saturday, September 10 at the Isle Casino parking lot area in Bettendorf, IA. This collaboration will give the LULAC Queen contest a bigger audience, as the LULAC Fiesta Queen 2016 will be crowned during VIVA QC. Raising funds for scholarships is the main objective of the LULAC Queen contest, but for many of the participants throughout the years it has become a family custom.

Last year, Assata Caldwell the 2013 LULAC Queen graduated from Iowa State University, where she studied Biological Pre-Medical Illustration. She shared with us what it meant for her to be LULAC Queen. “Being Queen was a great experience, firstly, for my family because running has been a tradition. My aunt was queen, my sister was queen and I was honored to be a part of that tradition,” Caldwell said. “I received two LULAC scholarships during my time in college and those scholarships really helped me be able to afford getting my degree. I believe all students that wish to continue their education should be given that opportunity for that bit of help, and running for queen helped me raise those funds for them.” “This is a very important part of our annual scholarship fundraising effort. For many years the Queen

contest has helped sustain the scholarship program,” Mike Reyes, LULAC Iowa State Director and member of LULAC Davenport, said. To date the Davenport Council has awarded close to $500,000 to approximately 755 area students. LULAC Davenport in collaboration with LULAC Moline will award this year $33,000 to 48 Quad City area students who sought the scholarship to fund their future educational goals. The chosen students were ones that exemplified studious work and grades, as well as showcasing school and community involvement. Las Heroínas de la Iniciativa de Liderazgo para Latinas Por Christina Fernandez-Morrow Sinónimos de Heroico son ● valiente ● épico ● bravo ● indomable ● denodado ● intrépido ● esforzado La palabra “heroico” ha estado atrapada en mi mente desde hace unas semanas. Es una de esas palabras que puede provocar una abundancia de sentimientos y opiniones. Lo que puede ser heroico para una persona, para otra persona lo mismo puede parecer tonto o arriesgado. Por lo regular los héroes son seres controversiales, incluyendo los héroes de ficción. La palabra me hizo pensar de quienes han sido mis héroes o heroínas. Aunque esto se escucha cliché, al principio recordé a mis padres. Ellos fueron los primeros que me enseñaron las lecciones de la vida que hasta el día de hoy no se me olvidan y yo trato de enseñar esas lecciones de la vida a mis hijos. En especial me quedaron en la

mente las lecciones de altruismo, el valor de una fuerte ética laboral, y que la familia te quiere a pesar de tus faltas, errores, fallas o angustias. A lo largo de los años una variedad de maestros han sido mis héroes. Hay dos que yo no puedo olvidar. La Srta. Kohler quien fue mi primera maestra que me hizo sentir que yo valgo como estudiante y que soy persona importante. La segunda maestra se llamaba la Sra. Vargas, mi primera maestra latina que creyó en mí y me dio ánimos de maneras que seguramente ni ella se puede imaginar. Ella me retó y yo, buscando hacerla orgullosa de mí, me esforcé más y esperé más de mi misma. Recientemente, yo fui parte de la graduación del tercer grupo de mujeres de la Iniciativa de Liderazgo para Latinas, una organización no lucrativa local que se enfoca en desarrollo de liderazgo entre mujeres latinas quienes están a punto de empezar

sus carreras. He sido la directora ejecutiva de la agencia desde el 2012 cuando esta era apenas una idea y pagina Web. Las mujeres que han completado este programa son fenomenales, y ellas recibieron el mejor halago que he escuchado, cuando mi hija que asistía la ceremonia me dijo que cuando ella sea grande ella quiere ser como ellas. Las mujeres que aspiran a ser más, esforzarse ellas mismas, tener metas y alcanzarlas y aquellas que abren sus mentes al aprendizaje y aceptan la ayuda de mentores son heroínas. Ellas son más que un ejemplo de seguir y más cuando no solamente hacen todas esas cosas sino también se apoyan entre ellas. Esto es lo que me llama más de ellas, y otras mujeres alrededor mío. Hay muchos artículos de como las mujeres no se apoyan unas a otras; la noción de las mujeres amas de casa contra las madres que trabajan, la división entre ellas que tienen

hijos y aquellas que escogen no tenerlos; la opinión que ellos no son mentores unas para otras lo suficiente. Afortunadamente, esta no es mi realidad. Encontré una comunidad de mujeres que hace lo opuesto. Todas las variaciones de la palabra heroico abarcan las mujeres que han sido mis compañeras, aliadas, maestras, supervisoras y amigas. Esto es parte de mi madre, mi hermana, mi abuela, mi cuñada, mis tías y primas. Lo veo en mi hija, mis sobrinas e hijas de mis mejores amigas. Las barreras no las paran, pero las hacen más fuertes. Ellas encuentran soluciones cuando enfrentan problemas, y en vez de limitar a otros, ellos han ofrecido su ayuda a todos aquellos quienes lo necesitan, incluyendo a mí misma. Estoy agradecida que existen heroínas y mujeres valientes, quienes están allí para ayudarse y apoyarse. Espero poder brindar el mismo apoyo a las mujeres que cruzaran mi camino.

Sheroes of the Latina Leadership Initiative By Christina Fernandez-Morrow Synonyms of HEROIC: • brave • champion • courageous • daring • fearless • gallant • gutsy • valiant

• bold • epic • grand • noble

In light of the news I shared a few weeks ago, the word heroic has been swimming in my head. It’s one of those words that can evoke a plethora of feelings and opinions. What is heroic to one person can be foolish or risky to others. Heroes are often controversial, even fictional ones. The word got me thinking of who my heroes have been. As cliche as it sounds, the first people who come to mind are my parents. They were the first to teach me life lessons that still resound in my life, that I try to pass down to the kids in my life. I

especially learned selflessness, the value of a strong work ethic, and that family loves beyond flaws, mistakes, failures and heartbreaks. Over the years various teachers have been my hero. Two are standouts. Ms. Kohler who was the first teacher that made me feel valuable as a student, and that I was important as a person. The second was Mrs. Vargas, my first Latina teacher who believed in me and encouraged me in ways she may never realize. She challenged me, and in wanting to make her proud I pushed myself harder and expected more from myself. Recently, I was part of the graduation of the third cohort of women from the Latina Leadership Initiative, a local non-profit that focuses on leadership development for Latinas who are just starting their careers. I have been the executive director of the agency since 2012, when it was an idea and

a website. The women who have completed the program are phenomenal, and they got the biggest complement I have heard to date, when my daughter, who attended the ceremony, told me that she wants to be like them when she grows up. Women who aspire to be more, push themselves, set goals and knock them out, and who open themselves up to learning and being mentored are heroes. They are more than role models when they not only do all these things, but support each other as well. That is what sticks out to me most about them, and the women I am privileged to be around. There are countless articles about how women don’t lean in; the rife between stay-at-home vs. working moms; the divide among those who have children and those who choose not to; the opinion that they don’t mentor each other enough. Luckily, that has not been my reality. I

have found a community of women who do the opposite. All the variations of heroic encompass the women who have been my peers, Allies, friends, teachers, supervisors, and friends. It is embodied in my mother, sister, grandmother, sisters-in-law, aunts and cousins. I see it in my daughter, nieces and the daughters of my closest friends. Barriers don’t slow them down, but makes them more resilient. They problem-solve in the face of trials, and instead of keeping others down, they have extended a hand to those who need it, myself included. I am thankful for sheroes and the courageous women who are there for one another to support and protect. I hope I can be that same support to the women who cross my path. En Nuestras Propias Palabras Por Sandra Sanchez El sábado 14 de mayo tuve el honor de ser parte de la Ceremonia de Premios para el Concurso de Video para Jóvenes inmigrantes de este año. El concurso de video fue creado con la idea de atraer a jóvenes, en particular aquellos mejor conocidos como DREAMERS o SOÑADORES: inmigrantes que llegaron a este país cuando eran niños y quienes todavía no están autorizados para hacerlo o tienen la Acción Diferida para Llegados en la Infancia o DACA por sus siglas en inglés, para que a través del concurso aprendan a abogar por los asuntos que les afectan a ellos y sus familias así como también compartir sus increíbles historias de desafíos y resiliencia humana en sus propias palabras y a su manera por medio de un corto video. Todos los videos participantes mostraron historias maravillosas y los tres finalistas ganaron una beca patrocinada por el Programa Voz de Inmigrantes de AFSC de Des Moines. El esfuerzo demostrado por los participantes, presentadores voluntarios y el panel de jueces estuvo lleno de energía, solidaridad, cariño e historias de dolor y esperanza. Durante mis primeros años de recién llegada a Des Moines, varios grupos me pidieron en varias ocasiones compartir mi historia y la razón que me hizo venir a este país y los desafíos enfrentados por los recién llegados a este estado. Con frecuencia sentí como si estuviera desnudando mi alma enfrente del público y no entendía el propósito. Con frecuencia me sentí como si fuera algún tipo de entretenimiento y después de Participantes Concurso de Videos para Jóvenes del programa Voces de Inmi- una profunda reflexión empecé a grantes de Iowa del American Friends Service Committee negarme a compartir mi historia a

A pesar de todo, yo sabía y yo sé que si no compartimos nuestras historias, es menos probable que la gente deje sus miedos hacia el “extranjero” y nos vean por lo que somos: seres humanos como cualquier otro con aspiraciones, desafíos y triunfos. Queremos reunirnos con nuestros seres queridos, vivir en un lugar seguro, ganar dinero con nuestro trabajo honesto y al final del día, convertirnos en ciudadanos de las comunidades donde vivimos. Pero hay muchas barreras que nos lo impiden. Los inmigrantes recién llegados o la primera generación tienen que enfrentar tanto que a veces es simplemente agotador vivir de día a día; los inmigrantes de segunda generación (hijos de inmigrantes o aquellos que llegaron muy pequeños) también enfrentan desafíos como tensiones entre la cultura de sus padres y la del país donde ellos nacieron, encontrar su propia identidad no solamente como individuos sino como miembros de la sociedad en medio de las comunidades que tal vez quieran o no aceptar los cambios demográficos como un hecho positivo del tejido de nuestra sociedad. Muchos eruditos, investigadores, comunicadores y otros “expertos” hablan sobre nosotros como el objeto de un asunto. Por medio de estos videos, los participantes son los creadores, narradores y carácter principal de la historia; ellos comparten partes de sus vidas en sus propias pal-

abras. La experiencia misma les da poder porque es rara la vez en que somos el sujeto principal de cualquier historia en las noticias, en política, o como parte de investigaciones; por lo regular somos el objetivo de aquellos que explotan y quienes muchas veces tienen agendas ocultas detrás de sus comentarios o estudios. Nuestra agenda es clara: dar voz a aquellos que no tienen voz, ofrecer un espacio para aquellos que a menudo están al margen de la mayoría de los medios de comunicación masiva y contar su historia en sus propias palabras y de la manera que ellos quieren hacerlo. Más que nada, enseñándoles habilidades para que se conviertan en la mejor versión de sí mismos por el simple hecho de ser parte de una organización donde se considera la opinión de todos los participantes. Yo nombré este blog “En nuestras propias palabras” porque es solamente nuestra propia voz la que honra la realidad de nuestras experiencias personales y la de participantes del concurso de video para jóvenes. In Our Own Words By Sandra Sanchez

On Saturday, May 14, I was honored to be part of the Awards Ceremony for this year’s Youth Video Contest. The youth video contest was created with the idea of attracting young people, particularly those known as Dreamers: immigrants who came to this country as children and who are still unauthorized or have a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA for short, to learn how to advocate for the issues that affect them and their families as well as to share their stories of incredible challenges and human resilience in their own words and in their own way via a short video. All the entries showed amazing stories, and of course the three finalist videos earned the participants a modest scholarship sponsored by the AFSC Immigrants Voice Program in Des Moines. The effort put forth by the participants, the volunteer presenters, and the panel of judges was full of energy, solidarity, loving hearts, and stories of pain and hope.

During my first years as a newcomer to Des Moines, I was asked numerous times to share with a variety of audiences about my life, why I have come to this country, and the challenges newcomers face as new arrivals to this state. More often than not, I felt like I was getting myself “naked” in front of a group of strangers and didn’t see the purpose. More often than not I felt that I was being simply a form of entertainment and after deep reflection, I started refusing to share my story unless those requesting it would give me a clear and good explanation of what was the objective. If their explanation didn’t satisfy me, I refused to do it and I became protective of my constituents being exposed to the same. Still, I knew and I know that without us sharing our stories it is very unlikely that people would get over their fears of “the stranger” and see us like who we are: human beings like anyone else with aspirations, challenges, and triumphs. We want to reunite with love ones, find a safe harbor, make a living through our honest

work, and ultimately become full citizens of the communities where we live. However, there are plenty of barriers to attain that. First-generation immigrants have to overcome so much that it is really exhausting just to make it day by day; second-generation immigrants also face numerous challenges regarding the tensions between the culture of their parents and that of the country where they were born; find their own identity not only as individuals but as members of society in the midst of communities who may or may not embrace demographic changes as a positive fact of the weaving fabric of our society. Plenty of scholars, researchers, politicians, communicators, and others speak about us as objects of an issue. Through these videos the participants are the narrators, the story-tellers, and the main subjects of their stories; they share parts of their lives in their own words. The experience itself is empowering because very rarely are we the main character(s) of any story in the news or in politics or in research;

we are usually the objects of those which is exploitative and often there are untold agendas behind them. Our agenda here is clear: give voice to the voiceless, give a space to those who are often marginalized from most media outlets, and tell their story in their own words to the extent and in the way they want to do it. Most importantly, empowering them to become the best version of who they can be by virtue of being in a partnership where everyone’s input is considered. I entitled this blog “In Our Own Words” because it is only our own voice that honors the reality of our personal experiences and that of our youth video participants. I invite you to watch their videos with an open heart and an open mind to reflect and take action. Recognize your innate worth so you can recognize the innate worth of our fellow new Iowans. El colegio es tu meta. Pero todavía tienes que terminar tu último año de la preparatoria. Pon atención.

Supercharge College Plans With These Summer Tips Courtesy of Iowa College Aid The books have just closed and the vacations are finally under way. But summer also offers the chance for students to get a jump on building a game plan for choosing and applying for a college. For incoming high school seniors, things are about to get real busy where college readiness is concerned. Beat the rush and get ahead of the game by following this summer college planning preparation checklist : Finalize a list of target schools. Summer is a great time to whittle down the list of schools that a student might attend. Still not sure which schools make the cut? Take advantage of vacations to tour schools. Discuss finances in depth as a family. Completing the Free Application

for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can seem daunting. Taking the time to prepare now will make the process less time-consuming. Also consider the costs of target schools now to properly prepare for what students and families will need to succeed at that dream school. Plan campus visits. While summer might offer more free time, visiting target schools in the fall gives a chance to see what student life is like during classes. Don’t miss out on these opportunities by scheduling campus tours in advance, as reservations can fill up once the school year starts. Take advantage of volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is valuable and important not just for seniors looking to find work experience in interesting fields, but for students of all ages looking to establish a

resume that will reflect well on their community involvement when applying to colleges down the road. Stay on top of testing. Choose the ACT or SAT based on spring scores, register for the fall test, and consider test prep. Knowing the test and score requirements of target schools will also help families develop a strategy for test-taking. Line up your targets. Develop a spreadsheet of target schools with deadlines for Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Decision. Applying early to a school shows an admissions office that a student is dedicated to the idea of being a student at that school. Make sure that students don’t overextend their early decision applications by applying to too many schools. Don’t put off thinking about the Common Application.

Review application requirements and essay questions for each college on your list; open an account with the Common Application and get a head start filling out the easy parts. While it may be too soon to write that killer essay (there’s still a lot of living to do), filling out many of the parts of the Common Application will help students who otherwise might try to shove college applications in between busy homework and schools schedules. Review scholarship application requirements and essay questions. Many scholarships post requirements well ahead of time so that students have the opportunity to find the information and apply. Millions of dollars of scholarships go unclaimed annually. Hunting out and applying for scholarships can make the difference between attending that dream school or

having to pass. Think about recommendations. Consider which teachers, counselors or coaches might write a letter of recommendation on your behalf, and reach out to them with a request. Just like students, teachers are far less busy in the summer than in the fall. Reaching out to those teachers that might right the best recommendation now not only reflects a student’s interest, but also respect for the teacher’s time. That alone might result in a higher quality recommendation. Prepare to work hard. Do your summer reading for the fall semester, and mentally prepare to continue working hard senior year. College is the goal. But there’s still that senior year to get through. Don’t overlook it.

LULAC Iowa Lanza Campaña Voto Latino en el Cuarto Distrito de Iowa Hoy la Liga de los Ciudadanos Latino Americanos Unidos lanzó una campaña informativa para invitar a los latinos a participar en la elección primaria del 7 de junio para el Cuarto Distrito Congresal de Iowa. Cualquier votante registrado puede participar en las primarias, sin importar su afiliación actual al partido, pero se requiere que participantes se registren con el partido que ellos piensan apoyar en las primarias. Iowa LULAC launches Latino vote campaign in Iowa’s 4th District DES MOINES, IA - The League of United Latin American Citizens today launched an informational campaign to encourage Latinos to participate in the June 7 primary election for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. Any registered voter can participate in the primary, regardless of current party affiliation, but is required to register with the party they intend to vote with in the primary. The fourth district encompasses northwestern Iowa and includes the communities of Ames, Boone, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Sioux City and Storm Lake. “We want our community to know how crucial their participation is in this primary race,” said Joe Enriquez Henry of Des Moines, the National LULAC vice president of the Midwest

region. “We showed how powerful the Latino vote can be with the outcome of the Iowa Caucuses, and now we want to carry that momentum forward in selecting a candidate who supports the Latino community.” LULAC’s outreach will involve more than 11,000 registered Latino voters in northwest Iowa with a concentrated effort on the communities of Storm Lake and Sioux City. The “get out the vote” campaign will include phone calls to registered voters and door-to-door neighborhood canvassing. Within the next week, registered voters will receive a mailing that will explain how they can vote in the primary by mail. “We want to ensure a candidate represents the issues that are important to us: laws that protect the right to vote, good

jobs, access to affordable health care and education, a pathway to citizenship for the 12 million undocumented immigrants living in our country and an end to private detention centers,” Enriquez Henry said. LULAC will expand its efforts after the primary to include the entire state leading up to the Nov. 8 general election. Efforts will be similar to the work LULAC conducted for the 2016 Iowa Caucuses, which drew a record number of Iowa’s Latinos, who influenced the outcome of both parties’ caucuses. Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred Jr. announced that Davenport will be the first of six stops this year for a traveling Baseball Hall of Fame exhibit that will open at Modern Woodmen Park on July 3. “It says a lot about Davenport and the Quad-Cities for baseball to choose our community as the starting point for a tremendous exhibit,” Mayor Frank Klipsch said. “What a great day for Dav-

enport.” Manfred made the announcement at the Field of Dreams movie site near Dyersville, along with Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz who was inducted in 2015. Davenport is the first stop before the exhibit moves on to major league cities Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis and also Las Vegas this year. The exhibit, titled “We are Baseball,” will be in Davenport

from July 3 to July 10. “This has been in the works for several years,” Manfred said at the announcement. “The idea of taking a baseball shrine -- Cooperstown -- and making it mobile is a great idea.” The tour is expected to combine technology with artifacts of the game. Many of the game’s most iconic artifacts will be with the Tour, including the bat used by Bobby Thomson to hit the walk-off home run in the

1951 regular season playoff, the glove worn by Willie Mays when he made the famous catch in Game One of the 1954 World Series, the trophy given to Ty Cobb in 1911 for leading the league in hitting with a .420 batting average and the jersey worn by Roberto Clemente during his final season in 1972.
