Me siento orgulloso de decir que soy un latino En artículos anteriores hemos hablado de nuestro consejo local de LULAC que se formó en septiembre pasado. Escribimos acerca de los objetivos, enfoque y dirección de los 16 miembros de este grupo. Uno de los objetivos era ofrecer becas para estudiantes del distrito escolar de West Liberty. Por donaciones privadas de los miembros de LULAC, recaudamos dinero suficiente para otorgar una beca este año. Cara McFerren Presidente del Consejo LULAC 310 va a presentar un certificado a un estudiante este año. Estamos muy contentos y emocionados de haber hecho tal progreso. Estamos aún más entusiasmados con el estudiante que recibirá este premio, y me gustaría darle más información sobre él. Todos los interesados tuvieron que llenar una solicitud, incluyendo sus calificaciones de secundaria, 2 cartas de recomendación y escribir un ensayo personal sobre sus metas educativas y la forma en que como podrían servir a la comunidad latina con su educación. Francisco López se graduará esta primavera y tiene planes de ir a la Universidad de Iowa para estudiar ingeniería informática. Él dijo en su ensayo que él desarrolló una pasión por la tecnología y las computadoras en su juventud, y tiene un sueño de convertirse en un ingeniero informático. Él
quiere ser parte del futuro de la tecnología. Francisco también es muy apasionado acerca de la comunidad latina y West Liberty. Es voluntario como entrenador para el Kickers Fútbol Club. Le encanta el fútbol y dice que es una gran parte de la cultura latina. Sin embargo, usa su posición como entrenador y voluntario para animar a los jugadores jóvenes a seguir sus sueños dentro y fuera del campo, y para ayudarles a tomar el camino correcto en la vida. Estamos muy impresionados por la compasión y la madurez de un hombre tan joven. Francisco tiene 3 hermanas menores. Sus padres son Francisco López y Maricela Agüero. Francisco será el primero en su familia que asiste a la universidad. Después de que él logre su objetivo su plan es regresar a West Liberty para vivir y continuar como voluntario con los jóvenes. Cuando se le preguntó acerca de lo que significa ser latino, dijo, “¡Ser latino es todo acerca de las tradiciones, la cultura, los valores y, tenemos comida sabrosa, me siento orgulloso de decir que soy un latino!”. LULAC de Iowa condena los esfuerzos de cancelar la ley de ciudadanía por nacimiento, pide la renuncia del Representante King DES MOINES – La Liga de los Ciudadanos Latino Americanos Unidos de Iowa pidió la renuncia del Representante de los Estados Unidos Steve King, a razón de los esfuerzos de King y otros a cancelar la ley de ciudadanía por nacimiento. Este Miércoles el Subcomité Judicial de la Cámara de Inmigración y Seguridad de las Fronteras se juntaron para discutir la Enmienda 14, que declara, “todas las personas nacidas o naturalizadas en los Estados Unidos, y son sujetos de jurisdicción de él, son ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos.” “La audiencia de subcomité sobre la cancelación de ciudadanía por nacimiento fue una jugada cínica hecha por miembros del Congreso anti inmigrantes para asegurar el apoyo de su base política y refleja sus actitudes xenófobas hacia la comunidad de los inmigrantes,” dijo Joe Enriques Henry, director estatal de LULAC de Iowa. “Nosotros condenamos cualquier intento hecho por miembros

Steve King, amid efforts by King and others to end birthright citizenship. The U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security met Wednesday to discuss the 14th Amendment, which states all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States. The subcommittee’s hearing on ending birthright citizenship was a cynical move by anti-immigrant members of Congress
to garner support from their political base and reflects their xenophobic attitudes toward the immigrant community, said Joe Enriquez Henry, state director of LULAC of Iowa. We condemn any attempts by members of Congress to use scare tactics and false statements to gather support from their radical anti-immigrant voters at the expense of immigrant families. In addition, LULAC of Iowa held its state meeting this month. Its almost 500 members, represented by 11 councils, voted in favor of a resolution asking for King’s resignation from Congress. King
is a member of the subcommittee and has introduced a bill to end birthright citizenship. It has become apparent that Rep. King is no longer serving the people of Iowa, Enriquez Henry said. “Iowa has a longstanding tradition of being a welcoming place for immigrant families. In some of the communities within Rep. King’s own Congressional district, more than 30 percent of the residents are Latino. He has lost touch with those whom he was elected to represent.” Founded in 1929, the League of United Latin American Citizens is the oldest
Latino civil rights organization in the United States. There are more than 1,000 local LULAC councils, which hold voter registration drives, provide awareness to residents about language and immigration issues, sponsor programs and advocate for Latinos. LULAC Youth Council member wins $10,000 scholarship from Davenport Rotary On Monday, April 27th the Davenport Rotary Club held its annual scholarship presentation, awarding $58,500 in scholarships to six incredible high school seniors. The scholarship committee reviewed 54 applications and the following six were chosen to receive scholarships. El Club de Boxeo de Davenport necesita nuevo local Por Nicholas Cunningham Después de tres décadas en el lugar, que debería de ser un punto de referencia nacional, por última vez sonó la campana para el Club de Boxeo de Davenport. El contrato de alquiler del gimnasio, ubicado al rincón de la calle Gaines en el centro de Davenport, IA, se terminó y el edificio fue vendido y pronto se construirán ahí apartamentos. Pero el dueño del gimnasio, Pat Peña, hijo del legendario entrenador de boxeo Alvino Peña no se va a quedar con los brazos cruzados y sigue
buscando un nuevo lugar para su equipo. “Tenemos hasta el 6 de julio,” explicó Peña. “Estamos buscando un nuevo lugar y espero que podamos encontrar algo.” Peña nunca planeo reemplazar a su padre y manejar el Club de Boxeo de Davenport donde los boxeadores profesionales, Michael Nunn y Antwun Echols hayan entrenaron y donde ahora Donovan Dennis está haciendo lo mismo, pero hace cinco años cuando Alvino Peña se enfermó y ya no pudo manejar el gimnasio Pat le ayudo. Pat no cerró las puertas entonces y las mantiene abiertas hasta el
día de hoy. “Tenemos que hacerlo,” dijo Peña. “Tenemos torneos en junio, julio y agosto y los niños deben de entrenarse.” El club de Boxeo de Davenport es mucho más que el grupo de personas que saltan la cuerda, le pegan saco de boxeo y entrenan. Este equipo es como una familia. Y este pequeño gimnasio, ubicado en la no tan segura parte de la ciudad, está lleno de fotos invaluables y recuerdos y ha sido el lugar done los jóvenes muchachos y muchachas del área hacen algo constructivo por algunas horas cada
tarde. El nuevo lugar significa nuevas oportunidades para el equipo de Peña que tiene más de 20 miembros. “No podemos parar. Davenport Boxing Club Needs New Home By Nicholas Cunningham After three decades in what should be a boxing national landmark, the final bell has rung for the Davenport Boxing Club. The gym at the bottom of Gaines Street in downtown Davenport IA, lease is finally up and has been sold and will soon be a block of apartments. But owner, Pat Pena, son of legendary boxing coach Alvino Pena isn’t going out without a fight as he searches for a new home for his team. “We’ve got until July 6th,” explained Pena. “We are out looking for a new spot and I’m just hoping something comes through.” It was never the intention of Pena to fill his father’s shoes and run the Davenport Boxing Club, where professional boxers, Michael Nunn and Antwun Echols made names for themselves and most recently, Donovan Dennis is doing the same. But when the late Alvino Pena became sick five years ago and could no longer run the gym, Pat kept the lights on and has not turned them off since. “I’ve got to do
it,” said Pena. “We’ve got tournaments in June, July and August and these kids have to work out.” The Davenport Boxing Club is so much more than a group of people jumping rope, hitting bags and sparring. This team is like family to each other. And this small gym in an area of town that isn’t always on the map for the most positive things, with its priceless pictures and memorabilia hanging everywhere has been a place for the young men and women of this neighborhood to be constructive for a few hours each evening. A new home could mean new opportunities for the twenty-plus members of Pena’s team. “We can’t stop. Cirque Italia with its Aquatic Spectacular show comes to Davenport, IA By Anastassia Zvoryguina
The Circus is in town! No, don’t expect the usual elephants and tigers, you won’t find them in Cirque Italia. What you will find is an experience so unique you will remember it for many years to come. Forget the traditional circus known to you. Prepare yourself for a show of European style. Be ready for a customized tent with a movable stage that holds 35,000 gallons of water, colorful dancing fountains and water curtain. Cirque Italia will leave you astonished and wanting more. Areal acts, hand balancing, contortionists, hula hoops and more, a lot more. “Aquatic Spectacular” is one show you will not want to miss this year. Manuel Rebecchi is the owner of Cirque Italia and he was born and raised in Milan, Italy. He came to United States in 2003. When Rebecchi was a child he spent a lot of time traveling with his aunt in Italy and Europe. His aunt was well known Moira Orfei and his uncle, Massimiliano Nones is a recipient of a Gold Clown award which was given to him directly by Prince Ranieri of Monaco. With relatives of these proportions Rebecchi is determined to dazzle his audience with exceptional and one of a kind Aquatic Spectacular. In order to create a great show Rebecchi surrounded himself, not only with great performers from all over the world, but also he hired Chante DeMoustes as Producer/Chief Operating Officer. DeMoustes is from Clearwater, Florida and throughout her life arts and business had always part of her. Her extensive experience of 16 years in production and entertainment background along with her artistic side come together in the creation of an exceptional show. For the Aquatic Spectacular DeMoustes is planning to blend different arts together. She wishes that everyone really enjoy this one of a kind, out of ordinary show. Even though production of the show is very important, to make the show truly

For the grand finale of their act they prepared a performance that involves torches and a ring of fire. Besides jugglers the audience can expect laser man, mermaid, sailors and more.
“The acts are amazing and include people from around the world, including many Latinos. At the end of the show the audience members can come out and take pictures with the performers for free. Besides doing my act that is my favorite part. Getting to meet the people and hear their thoughts about the show,” Emiliano Fusco told us about Aquatic Spectacular. Thanks to a great producer and amazing performers Rebecchi’s idea of doing something different and new turned into a wonderful Aquatic Spectacular show. Consulado Móvil de Nebraska visitará Davenport, Iowa Una vez más Hola America se honra en ser los anfitriones de la visita anual del Consulado Móvil de México en Nebraska a la ciudad de Davenport Iowa. Hermandad Universitaria Latina fundada en la Universidad de Iowa celebra su 25 aniversario Por Laura A. Nelson “¡Cultura es Orgullo, Orgullo es Éxito!” y “¡Hermanas por Vida!” Sigma Lambda Gamma, Sororidad Nacional establecida el 9 de abril de 1990 en la Universidad de Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Historia en breve de Sigma Lambda Gamma, Hermandad Universitaria Nacional Objetivo El objetivo de la Sororidad Sigma Lambda Gamma es juntar a las mujeres para ser compañeras, aprender de la cultura, apoyo moral, académico y social y hacerles fuertes. También, la sororidad trabajará para ayudar con necesidades y deseos de toda la gente por medio de la difusión de las diversas culturas que compartimos. Gracias a que conocí diferentes mentores entre empleados y profesores y oportunidades de investigaciones, además de ser la primera generación en mi familia para graduarse con licenciatura sino también yo fui la primera persona en mi familia que fue aceptada en un programa de doctorado en escuela de psicología y me gradué con más de 100 horas en semestre aprendiendo de las cosas de las que me apasionaban. Por medio de la Sororidad Sigma Lambda Gamma yo me convertí en la primer vicepresidente de ex alumnos para consejo Nacional de Sigma Lambda Gamma y ayudé a establecer las primeras secciones de la Sororidad. Algo que empezó con cinco mujeres en la Universidad de Iowa creció en los siguientes 25 años y ahora hay más de 135 congregaciones/capítulos en todo el país, cinco colonias (grupos en las universidades que trabajan para ser reconocidas como capítulo) y 25 secciones de ex alumnas (las mujeres que se han graduaron de la universidad pero desean a continuar apoyando la misión, objetivo y visión de Sigma Lambda Gamma en sus propias comunidades). Yo me quedé en la Universidad de Iowa por nueve años (cuatro años de estudios para licenciada y cinco años de postgrado) y ayudé a otras Hermanas a aprender sobre los cinco principios: Estudios, Conocimientos Culturales, Servicio Comunitario, Morales y ética e interacción social. Durante todos estos años yo aprendí sobre mi cultura e impacto valioso
que yo sentí en mi misma, mi comunidad, mi país en el mundo. Alrededor del año 2002 después del trabajo en el campo de la Escuela de Psicología, yo tomé una posición fuera de Washington, D.C. y allí me encontré con Maria Temiquel por medio de la Asociación de ex alumnos de la Universidad de Iowa y junto con el grupo de ex alumnas dedicados miembros de la Sororidad Sigma Lambda Gamma formamos el comienzo de nuestros retiros bianuales de Hermandad de “Liderazgo Emocionalmente Inteligente” para mujeres jóvenes. La Sororidad estableció parte de visiones de Capítulos Nacionales en 1996 y 1998: Fundación de Sigma Lambda Gamma que apoya mujeres jóvenes de todo el país que terminan su licenciatura y empiezan sus estudios de postgrado por medio de becas anuales, programas para licenciadas y programas de liderazgo para mujeres jóvenes para estudiantes de secundaria. Tenemos tres empeños filantrópicos: Programas Trio, Conocimientos de Cáncer de Mamas y Cáncer del Corazón. El 9 de abril de 2015 celebramos 25 años de existencia, hermandad y fortaleza de mujeres. Somos una Sororidad Multicultural de latinas y creemos en nuestros Principios, Misión, Objetivo y Lema; Cultura es Orgullo, Orgullo es Éxito. Latina based Multicultural Sorority Founded at The University of Iowa celebrates 25th Anniversary By Laura A. Nelson “Culture is Pride, Pride is Success!” and “Hermanas Por Vida!” Sigma Lambda Gamma, National Sorority Established April 9, 1990 at The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. A Brief History of Sigma Lambda Gamma, National Sorority Purpose The purpose of Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority is to bring women together for companionship, cultural awareness, moral, academic, social support, and their empowerment. Further, the sorority shall work to better serve the needs and wants of all people by disseminating the diverse cultures which we all share. Finally, the sorority shall maintain respect for the view of others through this tolerance, enhancing our understanding of one another, and thus bettering our community, our country, and the world. (Information given to me after I was inducted as a perspective in the Fall of 1991, Laura Nelson #7 Alpha Chapter, The University of Iowa)
History On October 22, 1989, a group of women gathered at the Chicano American Indian Cultural Center to form an organization of Hispanic women at The University of Iowa. They wanted to form a group that would give social and academic support for women. Originally a group of nineteen: Anna Arteaga, Vanessa Bonilla, Gloria Cuevas, Laura Flores, Pamela Little, Patricia Mares, Rosalee Mares, Patricia Marroquin, Patricia Marquez, Julieta Miller, Cintya Molina, Maria Pineda, Julia Rapoza, Danell Riojas, Emma Rodriguez, Zerina Segoviano, Guadalupe Temiquel, Maria Temiquel, and Alejandra Torres along with the help of Esther Materon-Arum, Special Support Services Advisor at The University of Iowa and Mary Peterson, Office of Campus Programs Greek Life Coordinator, they would meet from the Fall of 1989 to the Spring of 1990. On April 9, 1990 Sigma Lambda Gamma was recognized by the InterFraternity Council/Pan-Hellenic Council as a Sorority. A retreat was held on May 7, 1990 with Mary Peterson at the Iowa Memorial
Union in Iowa City, Iowa to get some of the ideas of the sorority down on paper and to establish next steps. The first meeting of the Fall Semester 1990 was held at the Chicano American Indian Cultural Center. The number of women decreased leaving 6 women, at the end of the Fall of 1990 five women were left and those five women are recognized at the Founders of Sigma Lambda Gamma, National Sorority: Guadalupe Temiquel (Sterling, Illinois), Julieta Miller (Walnut Creek, California), Gloria Cuevas (Beeville, Texas), Danell Riojas (Chicago, Illinois), and Maria Pineda (Los Angeles, California). On February 15, 1991, the first group of associates was formed and inducted at the Chicano American Indian Cultural Center. This group consisted of the following five young women: Patricia Arroyo (Orland Park, Illinois), Noemi Diaz (Wheeling, Illinois), Angel Martinez (Fort Madison, Iowa), Seema Singh (Skokie, Illinois), and Gabriela Villafuerte (Rockford, Illinois). On March 13, 1991 at Danforth Chapel, initiation took place for the Founders of Sigma Lambda Gamma, National Sorority AND on April 9, 1991, the first group

rority and invited me to become an associate member with three other women: Tina Quinones (Des Moines, Iowa), Rita Martinez (Fort Madison, Iowa), and Jackie Marquez (Iowa). We were initiated as Members of Sigma Lambda Gamma on February 14, 1992. As a member, I learned the continued importance of Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. I also learned the true meaning of Sisterhood and Women’s Empowerment. Because our journey did not end with initiation, it was only the beginning. Because of my Sisters, I would be able to graduate in 4 years including two summer courses with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Human Relations Minor. Because of the mentors I met on Faculty and Staff, and the research opportunities, I would not only be the first generation in my immediate family to graduate with a Bachelors degree, but would go on to be the first person in my family to be admitted to a Ph.D. program in School Psychology and graduate with over 100 semesters hours learning about things I loved to learn about. Through Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, I would become the first Vice President of Alumni for The National Board of Sigma Lambda Gamma and help to establish the first chapters of the Sorority. What began as five women on The University of Iowa campus would grow over the next 25 years into over 135 chapters throughout the country, 5 colonies (those groups working on their campuses to be recognized as chapters), and 25 Alumnae Chapters (those women who have graduated from a University and wish to continue supporting the Mission, Purpose, and Vision of Sigma Lambda Gamma within their own communities). I would remain on The University of Iowa campus for nine years (four undergraduate, and five graduate) and help other Sisters to learn about our five Principles: Academics, Cultural Awareness, Community Service, Morals & Ethics, and Social Interaction. Throughout all of these years I would remain aware of my own culture and the valuable impact it makes to me, others, my community, my country, and the world. Around 2002, after working in the field of School Psychology, I took a position outside of Washington, D.C. and reconnected with Maria Temiquel through the University of Iowa Alumni Association and with a group of dedicated Alumnae members of Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, we formed the beginnings of the DC Metro Alumnae Association of Sigma Lambda Gamma which continues to support a vast array of Community Service Projects. In 2009, I was chosen to be a Facilitator and Group Leader at one of our Bi-Annual Sisterhood Retreats for Young Women on “Emotionally Intelligent Leadership”. The Sorority has established part of the National Boards original visions in 1996 and 1998: The Sigma Lambda Gamma Educational Foundation which
supports young women throughout the country moving from undergraduate graduation to Graduate School through annual scholarships, undergraduate programming, and a Young Women’s leadership program for middle school students. We have three philanthropic endeavors: Trio Programs, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Heart Cancer Awarness. On April 9, 2015, we will have celebrated 25 years of growth, sisterhood, and Empowerment for Women. We are a Latina Based, Multicultural Sorority and strongly believe in our Principles, Mission, Purpose and Motto: Culture is Pride. Pride is Success! AMES, Iowa –Jóvenes estudiantes entre el noveno y doceavo grado (9th to 12th Grade) están invitados a participar en nuestro primer retiro educacional para jóvenes -- Maíz. Este programa fue desarrollado por la Universidad de Iowa State atreves de su programa 4-H para apoyar a comunidades Latinas en Iowa. 4-H es la organización juvenil más grande de Iowa y los Estados Unidos con más de 7 millones de participantes (100,000 en Iowa). Por medio de proyectos individuales, en grupo, y participación en eventos y programas planificados, los miembros de 4-H desarrollan sus conocimientos, aprenden a cooperar, y
desarrollan su capacidad de liderazgo. 4-H también provee apoyo para jóvenes desando estudiar en la Universidad de Iowa State. Este año el proyecto Maíz se llevara a cabo en la Universidad de Iowa State y El Centro de Retiros 4-H, el cual esta lacado cerca de la ciudad de Madrid, Iowa. ment, and evening entertainment of live music and astronomy. iWireless Center en Moline se llenará de los resonantes sonidos de las camionetas monster el 16 y 17 de mayo de 2015. Hola America tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con uno de los conductores de camionetas monster Pablo Huffaker. Pablo Huffaker es de Tomball, TX y no es conductor de cualquier camioneta monster. Fácilmente, se puede decir que él es leyenda de la industria. Cuando él era un niño él nunca pudo imaginar que iba a hacer una carrera en la industria de camionetas monster simplemente porque la industria no existía. De hecho, hace 33 años, el Sr. Huffaker fue una de las personas que dio el comienzo a la industria y trajo las camionetas monster a las masas. A los principio de los años 80 el Sr. Huffaker fue una de pocas personas quienes apenas estaban empezando a construir las camionetas monster. Él ayudó a construir el original King Krunch. Poco después él decidió que él quería tener si propia camioneta monster y al pasar del tiempo él se hizo miembro del equipo Grave Digger ®. Además de manejar las camionetas monster, el Sr. Huffaker también es dueño de Racesource, un taller mecánico ubicado en Tomball, Texas. Él ofrece servicio mecánico a toda la industria. Fue un momento de mucha alegría porque este conductor veterano hace lo que le gusta y lo hace bien. “Soy una de pocas personas quien estaba allí al principio y quien pudo seguir activo,” Huffaker dijo con mucho orgullo. Con 33 años de experiencia el Sr. Huffaker no muestra deseo de retirarse pronto. Según él, su meta es por lo menos llegar a su aniversario de 35 años. “Si no voy a ser conductor, entonces quisiera ser dueño del equipo o uno de los entrenadores,” Sr. Huffaker explicó. El Sr. Huffaker también quiso invitar a toda la gente de los Quad Cities y sus alrededores a venir a Monster Jam. El Sr. Huffaker explicó que Monster Jam es un evento que toda la familia puede disfrutar. El 16 y 17 de mayo iWireless Center será transformado con pista de ceniza y obstáculos construidos adentro del edificio. Dos horas antes del evento principal habrá fiesta en el pit. Solo por $10 mas todos pueden conocer a los conductores, tomarse fotos con los conductores y camionetas monster. Después de

Monster Jam is coming to the QC By Anastassia Zvoryguina iWireless Center in Moline will be filled with the revving of Monster Trucks on May 16 and 17 of 2015. Hola America got a chance to talk to one of the drivers of monster trucks Pablo Huffaker. Pablo Huffaker from Tomball, TX is not an average driver of monster trucks. He can easily be called a legend of the industry. Growing up Huffaker never imagined of having a career in the industry of monster trucks simply because it did not exist. In fact, 33 year ago Mr. Huffaker was one of few who started the whole industry and brought monster trucks to mainstream audience. At the beginning of 80s Mr. Huffaker was one of the people who were just starting to build monster trucks. He helped to create the original King Krunch. Soon after he decided that wanted monster truck of his own and later on he joined Team Grave Digger®. Besides driving monster trucks, Mr. Huffaker also owns Racesource machine shop in his native Tomball, Texas. He services the whole industry of monster trucks. His custom work can be seen on many monster trucks participating in Monster Jam. Mr. Huffaker develops and manufactures original products for monster trucks. The passion for monster trucks also got him a victory in the Monster Jam competition. Every year Monster Jam holds its finals in Las Vegas, NV. In 2007 Mr. Huffaker won a title of World Freestyle Champion. It was a great joy for this veteran driver because he does what he loves and he does it well. “I am one of the very few people who was at the beginning and managed to stay active,” Huffaker told with great pride. With 33 years in this industry under his belt, Mr. Huffaker is not showing any desire to retire any time soon. According to him, his goal is to make it to 35th anniversary, at least. “If not a driver, then I would like to be a team owner or one of the coaches,” Mr. Huffaker explained. Mr. Huffaker also wanted to extend his sincere invitation to everyone in Quad Cities and surrounding areas to come
and enjoy Monster Jam. Mr. Huffaker explained that Monster Jam is an event that whole family can enjoy. May 16 and 17 of this year iWireless will be transformed with dirt tracks and obstacles constructed inside. There will be pit party two hours before the main event. For only $10 more everyone can meet the drivers, take pictures with drivers and monster trucks. After the pit party there will be the monster truck show and at the end of the night a winner of the competition will be crowned. “Being Latino is all about traditions, culture, values and having great food. I am proud to say I am a Latino.” Francisco López In past articles we have talked about our local LULAC council that was formed last September. We wrote about the goals, focus and direction the 16 members of this group decided to work toward. One of those goals was to award scholarships to deserving students from the West Liberty school district. By private donations from LULAC members, we raised enough money to award a scholarship this year. Cara McFerren President of LLULAC Council 310 will be giving a certificate that student. We are very pleased and excited to have made such progress. We are even more excited about the student who will receive this award, and we would like to tell you more about him. All applicants had to fill out an application, include their high school transcripts, 2 letters of recommendation and write a personal essay on their educational goals and how they felt they would and could serve the Latino community with their education. Francisco Lopez will graduate this spring and has plans to go on to college at University of Iowa to study computer engineering. He said in his essay that he developed a passion for technology and computers at a young age, and that has grown into a dream of becoming a computer engineer. He wants to be a part of the future of technology. Francisco is also very passionate about the Latino community and West Liberty as a whole. He volunteers as a coach for the West Liberty Kickers
Soccer Club. He loves soccer and says it is a big part of Latino culture. However, he coaches and volunteers his time to also encourage young players to follow their dreams on and off the field and to help them take the right path in life. We are very impressed at the compassion and maturity of such a young man. Francisco is the oldest in his family, with 3 younger sisters. His parents are Francisco Lopez and Maricela Aguero. Francisco will be the first in his family to attend college. After he achieves his goal his plan is to return to West Liberty to live and to continue to volunteer with youth. When he was asked the question about what it means to be Latino, he said, “Being Latino is all about traditions, culture, values and having great food. I am proud to say I am a Latino.” We are so very proud of you as well, Francisco and I bet your mom and dad are too - congratulations!
