Latinos de Iowa ¿Y ahora que nos toca hacer? Por Tarsicio Macias Agosto ha sido un mes muy tumultuoso en lo que se trata de política en Iowa. Todos los candidatos populares de ambos partidos han estado viajando por todo el estado tomando fotos dándoles besos a los bebes y comiendo todo lo que es frito en la Feria del Estado de Iowa. Este mes pasado el tema de inmigración se convirtió en la cuestión numero uno entre los temas políticos y esto gracias a los comentarios calumniosos e hirientes que salen de
la boca de Donald Trump y de otros candidatos que se están quedando atrás y ahora pretenden ser tan desagradables como lo es Trump sin gran éxito. Hemos sido testigo de diferentes maneras de confrontar estos ataques hacia los inmigrantes empezando con el Peregrinaje de Libertad en Iowa que viajó por todo el estado ejerciendo su activismo con rallies, marchas, procesiones y vigilias (mas sobre esto en la página 12) hasta el incidente de Jorge Ramos cuando lo sacaron de la conferencia de prensa
y le gritaron “Regrésate a Univision,” palabras dichas por Donald Trump y ¡Lárgate de mi país! por un simpatizante de Trump en Dubuque, Iowa y finalmente la discusión civil del Foro #UniteIowa on Immigration en Storm Lake, Iowa que fue moderado por el columnista de Des Moines Register Kyle Munson y apoyado por 30 diferentes organizaciones de todo el estado de Iowa, incluyendo a nosotros HolaIowa.com (página 6) Latinos en Iowa hemos pasado por varias etapas emocionales para poder enfrentar los comentarios de
odio dirigidos hacia nosotros. Hemos sentido coraje, hemos hablado abiertamente y lo hemos discutido de una manera civil. ¿CUÁL ES EL SIGUIENTE PASO? Ahora hay que organizarnos, hay que registrarnos a votar y ahora en febrero vamos a caucus en Iowa. Iowa Latinos: What are you going to do now? By Tarsicio Macias August has been a very tumultuous month for politics in Iowa. All major candidates from both parties have been zig-zagging the state and taking photo-ops kissing babies and eating fried anything at the Iowa State Fair. This past month we saw immigration jump to the forefront of the political issues thanks to the vile rhetoric that keeps coming out of Donald Trump’s
unapologetic mouth and all the lagging candidates jumping on the “Let’s try to keep up with Trump’s craziness” bandwagon. We saw a wide spectrum on the handling of this issue from the Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage that traveled across the state exercising their activism in rallies, processions and vigils (read more about it on page 12) to Jorge Ramos thrown out of a press conference being told to “Go back to UniviHolaIowa.com is a publication of Hola America News P.O. sion” by Donald Trump in Dubuque, Iowa and finally to the civil discussion at the #UniteIowa on Immigration Forum in Storm Lake, Iowa moderated by Des Moines Register columnist Kyle Munson and organized and supported by over 30 organizations from all over Iowa including HolaIowa.com (page 6). Latinos in Iowa have gone through many stages in handling the hateful rhetoric aimed at them and their
loved ones. We’ve gone through anger, we’ve spoken out, we have discussed it in a civil manner. What is the next step? Now we organized, now we get registered to vote and now we caucus in February in Iowa. As a good friend of mine is always saying “In you’re not sitting at the table to voice you opinion then you might be part of the menu”. For people like Trump we are definitely part of the menu.

El Centro LULAC ubicado en el 4224 Ricker Hill Road Davenport, Iowa, celebrará su 56ª Fiesta Anual el sábado 12 de septiembre. Los boletos están disponibles por $25, que incluyen: Happy Hour a partir de las 4:30 Margaritas & Cerveza, cena por Restaurante El Mariachi , actuaciones del Ballet Folklórico de los Quad Cities, El Mariachi de Glenview y el grupo los Nopales Chuecos (previamente conocidos como Los Mocambos), y la presentación de la reina de la LULAC Fiesta y su corte. La Fiesta es una noche rica en tradiciones de familiares, la multifacética cultura latina con amigos y familiares y celebraciones. El evento conmemora la declaración de la Independencia de México de España en 1810, así como el inicio del Mes de la Hispanidad. Uno de los puntos destacados de la celebración es la tradición de la coronación de la Reina de LULAC. El ganar la corona significa representar a LULAC en los desfiles y otros eventos de la comunidad para el año,
el representar un papel de liderazgo para los jóvenes en la comunidad, dar tiempo y servicio de voluntariado, y actuar como una mentor para los estudiantes de primaria en algunas de las escuelas de Davenport. Las candidatas venden boletos de la rifa a beneficio del Fondo de Becas de LULAC 10, que otorgó $ 25,000 en becas a estudiantes de los Quad Cities este verano. The Event commemorates the declaration Mr. Salvador “CHAVO” Lopez of Independence of Mexico from Spain in 1810 as well as the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. One of the Highlights of the celebration is the tradition of the crowning of the LULAC Queen. Winning the crown means representing LULAC at parades and other community events for the year, representing a young leadership role in the community, volunteering time and service, and serving as a mentor to elementary students in some of the Davenport Schools. The candidates sell raffle tickets to benefit the LULAC 10 Scholarship Fund, which awarded $25,000 in Scholarships to Quad City high school students this summer.

All proceeds from the ticket sales go directly to the LULAC 10 Scholarship Fund. “This is a very important part of our annual scholarship fundraising effort. For many years, the Queen contest, the time and contribution of the Queen candidates and their families/friends has sustained the scholarship program,” said Matthew Casillas, President of LULAC Council 10 Davenport, Iowa. El congresista de Tejas Joaquín Castro se reúne con líderes latinos de Iowa en nombre de Hillary Clinton

El congresista Joaquín Castro, demócrata de Texas, habló en nombre de Hillary Clinton el 30 de agosto en el restaurante Cinco de Mayo en Des Moines. Ahí se reunieron varios líderes latinos de Iowa central. Actualmente, él está haciendo campaña por Clinton. Hillary para Iowa organizo el evento para hablar sobre la importancia del voto latino para Clinton -alrededor de 40 personas asistieron al evento. La comunidad latina que asistió al evento hizo preguntas sobre DACA y DAPA, la crisis de los refugiados, los centros de detención de inmigración, emailgate y sobre Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Castro cuestionó la declaración que hizo el candidato presidencial republicano Bobby Jindal, “la inmigración
sin asimilación es una invasión.” La respuesta de Castro en lo que respecto a lo que dijo Jindal fue: “¿Quién decide cuando alguien ya se asimila?” Los asistentes dieron a Castro un feedback positivo por visitar Iowa, para compartir su historia y hablar con ellos acerca de Clinton. El tomo la oportunidad para alentar a la comunidad latina a que sea parte de los caucus de Iowa. U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro meets with Iowa Latino leaders to stump for Hillary Clinton By Berenice Liborio U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas spoke on behalf of Hillary Clinton on August 30th at Cinco de Mayo Restaurant in Des Moines. He met many of central Iowa Latino leaders. Currently, he’s campaigning for Clinton. Hillary for Iowa hosted the event to talk about the importance of the Latino vote for Clinton—about 40 people attended the event. The Latino community that attended the event brought up questions on DACA and DAPA, refugee crisis, detention centers, emailgate and about Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Castro questioned republican presidential candidate Bobby Jindal on his statement that he made, “immigration without assimilation is an invasion.” He made a good counter statement in regards to Jindal asking, “Who gets to decide when someone is assimilated?” The attendees gave Castro a positive feedback for visiting Iowa, for sharing his story and speaking to them about Clinton. He encouraged the Latino community to part-take in the Iowa caucuses. Encuentro civil sobre inmigración en Iowa Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Inmigración se ha convertido en el tema numero uno para los candidatos presidenciales. Mientras que unos solo hablan sobre el problema otros tratan de participar en un dialogo saludable que a lo mejor puede traer un consenso de cómo enfrentar este problema. El sábado pasado #UniteIowa un Foro sobre Inmigración se llevó a cabo en la Universidad de Buena Vista en Storm Lake, IA. Alrededor de 400 personas asistieron el evento y según Kyle Munson, columnista de Des Moines Register y moderador de este foro, el evento en Storm Lake fue valioso. A pesar de los recientes comentarios y puntos de vista negativos sobre inmigración #UniteIowa on Immigration fue un evento donde la gente fue civil uno con otro.
La plática de 90 minutos y la sesión de Preguntas y Respuestas con dos candidatos Demócratas Martín O’Malley y Lincoln Chafee fueron tan calmadas como puede ser. “Este es el único foro diseñado para tener una discusión civil productiva sobre no solamente una de los temas más cruciales de la campaña presidencial sino una cuestión importante para esta nación que ha sido construida por inmigrantes,” Munson dijo al principio del foro. Sandra Sánchez de Des Moines, ciudadana naturalizada originaria de México y la directora del programa Iowa Inmigrants Voice (La Voz de inmigrantes en Iowa), Tamara Scott, integrante del comité Nacional Republicano de Iowa, Mónica Reyes, estudiante de la Universidad de Northern Iowa y DREAMer, Joe Crookham, el CEO de Musco Lighting,
Kim Hunter, abogada de inmigración y el Reverendo Chuck Valenti-Hein, el pastor de la iglesia presbiteriana de Storm Lake ofrecieron su punto de vista sobre la cuestión. A civil talk about immigration in Iowa By Anastassia Zvoryguina Immigration has turned into the number one issue for many presidential candidates. While some people like to just bring it to light and leave at that, there are those who try to engage in a healthy dialogue that, hopefully, can encourage a consensus on how to address this issue. Last Saturday #UniteIowa a Forum on Immigration took place in Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, IA. About 400 people attended the event and according to Kyle Munson, Iowa columnist for Des Moines Register and moderator of the forum, the event in Storm Lake was valuable. In spite of all the recent bad comments and views on immigration #UniteIowa on Immigration was an event where people were civil to each other. A 90 minute discussion and Q&A session with two candidates Democrats Martin O’Malley and Lincoln Chafee was as peaceful as it can get. “This is a unique forum designed to be a civil productive discussion on not only
one of the most crucial issues of this presidential campaign but a foundational issue for this nation built by immigrants” Munson said to start the forum. Sandra Sanzhez from Des Moines, a naturalized citizen form Mexico and director of the Iowa Immigrants Voice program, Tamara Scott, a Republican National Committeewoman for Iowa, Monica Reyes a student at the University of Northern Iowa and a Dreamer herself, Joe Crookham CEO of Musco Lighting, Kim Hunter Immigration Lawyer and advocate and Rev. Chuck Valenti-Hein, a senior pastor a Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake offered their points of view on the issue. There were exchanges, but they did not turn into anything ugly. The panelists made great points regarding the current handling of this issue “We need to find a way to weed out the threat of fear in the conversation.” Said Pastor Valenti-Hein “My problem with the immigration system is that it simply doesn’t exist” Joe
Crookham the CEO of Musco Lighting a global firm in Oskaloosa, IA said “It’s both an economic and humanitarian issue” he added. On the issue of Birthright Citizenship Tamara Scott, a Republican National Committeewoman for Iowa said the 14th Amendment was there to help the country economically and not to be abused by foreigners. To that comment Monica Reyes responded “I would definitely not call it abusing the system. I have siblings that are US citizens and they were born to an undocumented mother. Did you know they have to be 21 (years of age) before they can apply for my mother to become a citizen?” she said turning to Ms. Scott “That’s a long time to wait. I think people are having kids because of wanting to build a family not because they want to abuse the American system” she added. All in all #UniteIowa on Immigration was a successful event that brought together people with different views and gave them an opportunity to express their view in a friendly and civil way.

El Festival de la Herencia Latina de Iowa Sept. 26-27 Por Anastassia Zvoryguina
Cuando JoAnn Mackey empezó el Festival de la Herencia Latina en Iowa hace 15 años, ella ni siquiera imaginó que este iba a crecer en el festival mas asistido en Iowa. Ahora la gente de todo el estado de Iowa viene a Des Moines para disfrutar este evento cultural divertido. Este año el Festival de la Herencia Latina será el 26 y 27 de septiembre en los puentes de las calles Walnut y Locust en el centro de Des Moines, IA. Para el ex teniente de la policía Joe González este es el primer año que él encabeza la organización de este evento. Aunque él sirvió en el consejo de festival por 15 años, él admite que encabezar la organización del evento es mucho más difícil de lo que él esperaba. “Siempre hay muchas cosas que hacer,” el Sr. González dijo. “Queremos tratar de continuar el crecimiento de regional a estatal, Queremos que venga más gente,” él agregó.
Para este año los participantes pueden esperar muchas cosas divertidas. El propósito del festival es demostrar la variedad de las culturas y ofrecer una experiencia de aprendizaje a los participantes. Según, el Sr. González ellos tratan de representar los 22 países de América Latina. “Alrededor de 9 o 10 representantes de cada país van a estar allí y los que no puedan venir tendrán las mesas representando sus países,” el Sr. González nos compartió. En lo que se trata de entretenimiento uno puede esperar mucha música bonita. Mariachis van a cantar sus canciones tradicionales. Y si las rancheras no son su música de preferencia y si usted busca algo para mover el bote, pues espere merengue, bachata, y salsa. También los amantes del rock en español podrán disfrutar de este tipo de música durante el Festival de la Herencia Latina. Además de música hermosa habrá bailes tradicionales folklóricos mexi-

canos presentados por jovencitos. En el área de Brasil habrá bailarines de las danzas brasileñas y capoeira. También, habrá lucha libre. El Festival de la Herencia Latina es un evento familiar. Además de aprender sobre culturas diferentes, los niños se divertirán también. Habrá brincolines, una tienda de arte donde los niños podrán hacer manualidades y paseos en pony. Además, a lo largo de dos días cada hora los niños podrán romper una piñata. La nueva sección del Festival de la Herencia Latina este año es algo que se llama La Villa de la Salud. La Villa de la Salud será el sábado 26 de septiembre de 10 AM hasta 3 PM. Durante esta parte del Festival diferentes organizaciones de salud estarán presentes para compartir información sobre problemas de salud que afectan a los latinos. Los participantes del Festival tendrán la oportunidad de saber el tipo de su sangre con un simple examen de sangre. Después de La Villa de la Salud la Carpa de Participación Cívica
abrirá para todos aquellos quienes quieren saber más sobre su derecho de votar. Otra parte del festival importante es la Carpa de Arte. Este año uno podrá ver las obras de arte de los veteranos de las fuerzas armadas y de jóvenes latinos. Y claro, que Festival seria si no hubiera comida. Habrá mucha comida deliciosa en venta. Los visitantes podrán probar todo empezando de burritos y tacos y acabando con pupusas y hasta comida puertorriqueña. El Festival de la Herencia Latina de Iowa es un gran evento para toda la familia. “Queremos que la gente viaje a Des Moines para disfrutar de este evento,” el Sr. González dijo. Iowa’s Latino Heritage Festival September 26-27 By Anastassia Zvoryguina When JoAnn Mackey started the Latino Heritage Festival 15 years ago, she did not imagine that it will grow into one of the most attended festivals in Iowa. Now people from all over the state of Iowa come to Des Moines to enjoy this fun cultural event. This year Latino Heritage Festival will be September 26 and 27 on the Walnut and Locust Street bridges in downtown Des Moines, IA. For former Des Moines Police Lt. Joe Gonzalez this is his first year taking over the organization of the event. Although he had been on the board of this event for 15 years, he admits that being involved in the organization of the event is a lot harder then he thought. “Always many things to do,” Mr. Gonzalez said. “We want to try to continue to grow from regional to state. We want more people to come,” he added. For this year’s event participants can expect a lot of fun things. The main point of the festival is to showcase the culture and provide a learning experience to attendees. According Mr. Gonzalez they try to represent all 22 countries of Latin America. “About 9 or 10 will be there and those who cannot be there will have tables representing their countries,” Mr. Gonzalez shares. When it comes to entertainment expect a lot of great music. A Mariachi band will delight the public with its traditional music. If rancheras is not really your thing, and you want something that will make you want to move, then wait for merengue, bachata and salsa. Also calling out to all those who enjoy rock en español, as there will be bands playing this kind of music during the Latino Heritage Festival. Besides the diverse great music, participants will be able to enjoy traditional regional Mexican dances performed by different people. In the Brazilian section there will be performances of Brazilian dances and capoeira. Also, there will be lucha libre.
The Latino Heritage Festival is a family event. Besides learning about different cultures, children will have tons fun also. There will be jumping houses, art tent where children can make some crafts and pony rides. In addition, for the two days of the festival every hour children will have a chance to break a piñata. New this year for the Iowa Latino Heritage Festival is the Health Village. The Health Village will be on Saturday September 26 from 10 AM to 3 PM. During this part of the Latino Heritage Festival different health organizations will be sharing information about issues that affect Latinos. Also, participants will have a chance to find out their blood type through simple blood test. After the Health Village, Civic Engagement Tent will be open for those who are interested in learning more about exercising their right to vote. Another important part of this festival is the Art tent. This year’s the art tent will have a display of works done by different Army veterans and young Latinos. And of course what kind festival will this be without food? There will be a lot of very delicious food for sale at the Latino Heritage Festival. Participants will be able to taste anything from burritos and tacos to pupusas and even Puerto Rican food. Bernie Sanders habla en el picnic de Demócratas del Condado Scott Por Alejandra Salazar
Domingo 16 de agosto en el Parque del Condado Scott María Bribriesco, activista de justicia social por varios años, presento al Senador Bernie Sanders (I-VT) a un público ansioso de aproximadamente 1500 personas. Tan pronto que el interés para atender el evento creció, el Picnic anual para recaudar fondos de Demócratas del condado Scott, donde Sanders fue invitado para hablar, se tuvo que mover el evento d e la oficina de campaña de Davenport al parque. Alrededor de 1500 personas se apuntaron para aprender más sobre el candidato o como alguien que apoyaría a su campaña. Organizadores del picnic declaran que típicamente el evento tiene una asistencia de 150 personas. También durante el picnic se presentaron representantes de las campañas de la ex Secretaria del Estado Hillary Clinton, Dr. Willie Wilson de Chicago, y del ex gobernador de Maryland Martin O’Malley y algunos políticos del condado Scott. Sanders era el único candidato presidencial que habló. Sander se postuló su campaña y muchos le recibieron con pocas expectativas a salir adelante, muchos esperan que la ex Secretaria del Estado Hillary Clinton ganara la nominación. A pesar de que la campaña de Sanders llamó mucha atención por atraer muchas personas, más de 28,000 personas asistieron a su discurso en Portland, Oregon el 18 de agosto. Bribriesco, es simpatizante de Sanders, dice que fue un honor ser la invitada para hablar por los organizadores de la campaña. La activista prominente dice que ella al principio planeó a animar la Senadora Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) a postularse, pero le gustó Sanders después de aprender más sobre él al principio de este año. Bernie Sanders speaks at Scott County Democrats Picnic By Alejandra Salazar Maria Bribriesco, longtime social justice activist, introduced Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to an eager crowd of approximately 1500 supporters on Sunday at Scott County Park. Sanders was invited to speak at the Scott County Democrats’ annual Picnic in the Park fundraiser after interest rapidly outgrew capacity an event planned at the campaign’s Davenport office. An additional 600 cars had to be turned away for lack of parking according to campaign coordinators, though they stress not all of those could be accounted for as Sanders supporters. Around 1500 people had signed in as being there to learn more about the senator or already solidly in favor of his campaign. Picnic organizers state the event typically draws a crowd of 150. Also represented at the event were the campaigns of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Dr.Willie Wilson of Chicago, and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley, as well as those of Scott County politicians. Sanders was the only presidential hopeful to speak. Sanders is running what many consider to be a long-shot campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, a nod presumed to go to for-
mer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. However, his campaign has been in the spotlight for attracting record breaking crowds, exceeding 28,000 in Portland, Oregon on August 18th. Bribriesco, a Sanders supporter, says she was honored to be invited to speak by local campaign organizers. The prominent activist states she had originally planned to encourage Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to seek the nomination, but became enthused about Sanders after learning more about him earlier this year. Before a crowd that had begun to gather as much as two hours early in searing 90 degree heat, Bribriesco took the stage. She stated that growing up as part of a migrant farm worker family exposed her to issues of racial discrimination and economic injustice. “I listened to my parents, but I also paid attention to what was going on around. I realized that we worked so hard and we were still living in povertysomething’s not right.” She continued, “Cesar Chavez taught us two things... one, there’s dignity in work, and two, there’s strength in unity.” “The main reason I support Bernie Sanders is that he is the only candidate that is addressing the wealth and income disparity problem.”
In his speech, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, Sanders touched on issues ranging from the controversial Citizens United decision to the Iraq war, economic injustice and civil rights, citing his consistency and lack of pandering to party politics. In a telephone interview, Monday, Bribriesco said she believes that it is precisely his integrity that will win Sanders the nomination. She states that many, including Latinos, have lost faith in politicians who will say anything to get elected but serve corporate interests once in office. Many believe those interests have not been kind to the Latino community, especially in areas of economic disparity; for-profit prison corporations that back laws that incarcerate disproportionate numbers of Hispanics, including anti-immigration legislation; and the squandering of money lost to tax cuts for the super wealthy that could have been spent on education and healthcare. Bribriesco said Latinos are growing tired of being viewed as single-issue voters. “We care about the economy, we care about healthcare, we care about education. We care about making the world a better place for everybody and Bernie Sanders shares those values.”

Peregrinaje de Libertad de Iowa Por Tarsicio Macias
El Peregrinaje de Libertad de Iowa viajo por varias ciudades del estado de Iowa del 19 al 23 de agosto. En cada ciudad la Asamblea de los Derechos Civiles, el grupo organizando la peregrinación, fue recibido con el apoyo de varias organizaciones religiosas y de defensa a los derechos humanos que comparten el mismo objetivo el que los legisladores del país pasen una reforma migratoria integral. La travesía comenzó en el estado de Minnesota y la primera parada en Iowa fue la ciudad de Decorah, Iowa donde les dieron la bienvenida Pedro López y Mike Reyes el director estatal de LULAC Iowa y junto con ellos fueron a Postville, Iowa. La familia de Pedro López vive en Postville, donde las personas del peregrinaje hallaron lo que identificaron como una “Atmósfera de angustia”. En Postville visitaron la planta procesadora de carne que protagonizo la redada de inmigración mas grande en la historia de los Estados Unidos. Ahí tomaron unos momentos para reflexionar en lo que ahí había sucedido en el 2008. Mas tarde ese día fueron recibidos por el Padre Rudy Juárez de la Iglesia de Saint Patrick’s en Iowa City. Ahí tuvieron una demostración en el área de Downtown junto con otros grupos simpatizantes y esa noche cenaron en la iglesia Saint Patrick’s y tuvieron una reflección espiritual además de cantos en el santuario. El segundo día comenzaron en Iowa City, viajaron a Waterloo, Iowa y esa tarde viajaron hacia el este a la ciudad de Davenport, Iowa donde los recibirían miembros de LULAC Davenport, QC Interfaith y varios miembros de los medios de comunicaciones incluyendo a HolaIowa.com. La marcha en Davenport termino en la esquina de las calles 2 y Harrison lugar donde esta la estatua de bronce en honor a los inmigrantes irlandeses. La estatua de bronce es de escala normal y son el padre, la madre y un niño, y simboliza las dificultades por las que pasaron los inmigrantes irlandeses en su viaje hacia una vida mejor en los Estados Unidos después de la hambruna irlandesa.
Antonia Álvarez una inmigrante de México que lleva 14 años viviendo en los Estados Unidos fue una de las lideres del grupo y una de las voceras “EE UU tiene la oportunidad de ser el verdadero ejemplo para todo el mundo liberando a nuestra comunidad demostraría ser un país que da respeto y dignidad a los inmigrantes de esta nación y un buen ejemplo en todas las demás naciones en el mundo entero.” Antonia nos comento. Esa tarde después de la marcha el grupo se reunió en el centro LULAC para una cena amena antes de irse a descansar para el día siguiente que los llevaría a Des Moines donde se reunirían con el Obispo Richard Pates quien les daría una bendición ya que se prepararían para organizar protestas, procesiones y vigilias en los eventos de los distintos candidatos presidenciales en la feria estatal de Iowa. He ahí donde ejercieron su activismo en eventos de los candidatos presidenciales Chris Christie , Bobby Jindal y Ted Cruz que aunque este ultimo menciono en el micrófono que “apreciaba a cada uno de estos individuos” aun así dejo que los sacaran de su evento. Después de casi una semana de constante activismo la Asamblea de los Derechos Civiles regresaron a casa muy agradecidos de todo el apoyo que recibieron en Iowa “En todas nuestras acciones nosotros los peregrinos de Minnesota encontramos solidaridad por parte de nuestras Iglesias y organizaciones del estado de Iowa.” Antonia nos compartió. “Ciudadania ahora para todos los inmigrantes que vivimos en la oscuridad y la incertidumbre de nuestros destinos.” Antonia Álvarez En la foto de la página anterior: Antonia Álvarez en la marcha en el centro de Davenport, Iowa junto a la estatua en Honor al Inmigrante Irlandés. The Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage By Tarsicio Macias The Iowa Freedom Pilgrimage traveled through various cities in the state of Iowa August 19 through the 23. In every city the Asamblea de los Derechos Civiles, the Minnesota based group that organized this pilgrimage, was received with support from various religious and human and civil rights groups that share their same objective – that US legislators would approve once and for all a comprehensive immigration reform. Their first stop was the city of Decorah, Iowa where the participants of the pilgrimage were received by Pedro Lopez and Mike Reyes, LULAC Iowa state director, together they headed to Postville. Pedro Lopez’ family lives in Postville, where the pilgrimage participants found what they called an “atmosphere of despair.” In Postville they went to the processing plant that was the subject of the biggest immigration raid in United States history. There they took some time to reflect about what happened there in 2008. Later that day there were welcomed by Father Rudy Juarez from St. Patrick’s Church in Iowa City. There they had a demonstration in the downtown area and they were joined by other groups that symphonize with their mission and that night they dined at St. Patrick’s Church and had time for a spiritual reflection and sang hymns. The second day started in Iowa City from there they traveled to Waterloo, Iowa that same afternoon they headed out to Davenport where LULAC Davenport members welcomed them, along with QC Interfaith and representatives of various media including HolaIowa.com. The march in Davenport came to an end on the corner of 2nd Street and Harrison, afoot a bronze statue in honor of the Irish immigrants. The bronze statue is a live size one and it is of a father and mother with their child and it symbolizes the hardships of their trek toward a better life in America after the Irish Famine.
Antonia Alvarez is a Mexican immigrant that has been living in United States for 14 years and she was one of the leaders of this group and one of the speakers. “The United States have an opportunity to become a true example for the whole world if they would “free” our community we would be a country that respects and shows dignity to the immigrants of this nation and a good example to all other nations and the whole world to follow,” Antonia commented. Right after the march the group reunited in the LULAC center for a friendly dinner before resting so they could go on with their trip to Des Moines. There they would receive a blessing by bishop Richard Pates to prepare them for a weekend were they would participate in protests, processions and vigils during the different presidential candidates’ events at the Iowa State Fair. It was there during those events that they also exercised their activism. They protested during the events of the presidential candidates Chris Christie, Bobby Jindal and Ted Cruz. At the Cruz event they were escorted out of the event while you could hear Cruz saying over the microphone the he “appreciates each of these individuals” but did nothing to engage them. After a week of constant activism la Asamblea de Derechos Civiles returned home. They are thankful for the support they received in Iowa. “During all our actions of the pilgrimage we found solidarity from the churches and organizations of the state of Iowa,” Antonia told us. “Citizenship now for all the immigrants that live in the shadows and the uncertainty of our destinies,” Antonia Alvarez. Hace dos años, el Congresista Steve King obtuvo notoriedad por decir que los inmigrantes indocumentados tienen las pantorrillas del tamaño de melones por que cargan drogas desde México. El candidato presidencial más popular del Partido Republicano ha acaparado tremenda atención por decir que los inmigrantes indocumentados son asesinos, violadores y traficantes de drogas. También muchos otros candidatos de este partido han hecho un llamado para cambiar la Constitución de los Estados Unidos y negarles la ciudadanía a los bebes nacidos aquí de padres indocumentados. Esta clase de sentimiento fue expresado
un vez más este 17 de Agosto. El locutor de radio Jan Mickelson, quien es muy popular en Iowa, propuso que la solución para el problema de los inmigrantes indocumentados seria convertirlos en esclavos. Sus palabras exactas, traducidas, fueron: “Todas las personas que viven en el estado de Iowa, que no tienen documentación legal y que no pueden comprobar su estatus legal a satisfacción de las autoridades locales y estatales, aquí en Iowa, se convertirían en propiedad del estado de Iowa.” El también añadió, “¿Bueno, y cual es el problema con la esclavitud?” Esta semana nosotros nos unimos a otras personas de Iowa que están horrorizadas por los comentarios de Jan Mickelson y presentaremos una queja a la Comisión Federal de Comunicación (FCC). Las personas mencionadas anteriormente que hacen comentarios que lastiman no logran ver la humanidad en cada uno de nosotros y no se merecen aparecer en discusiones serias, especialmente en los medios de comunicación publica. Pero esta queja con el FCC no es suficiente. Como personas que hemos hecho nuestro hogar en el estado de Iowa tenemos la responsabilidad de exigirles a nuestros políticos y lideres cívicos que se sujeten a un código moral más alto. un gobierno enfocado en expander las oportunidades para todos. Los mejores servidores públicos logran hacer esto por que ven la humanidad en todos. Las personas de Iowa deben de aprender a ignorar a los demagogos y recordar la ilustre historia de este estado, de representar y defender los derechos de todas las personas marginadas antes de que esto fuera la posición popular o por conveniencia política. El 4 de Julio de 1839, en la primera decisión de la Corte Suprema de Iowa, los jueces dictaminaron que Ralph Montgomery, un esclavo de raza Negra, no era la propiedad de nadie. En 1869, Iowa fue el primer estado en el país de permitirle a una mujer practicar leyes. En el 2009, la Corte Suprema de Iowa dictamino que las parejas del mismo sexo si tienen el derecho de casarse. Estos son solamente tres de muchos ejemplos en la historia de Iowa cuando el verdadero corazón de nuestro estado se ha dado a relucir. Nosotros amamos a nuestro estado y apreciamos grandemente la herencia Latina que compartimos, y humildemente ofrecemos un ejemplo más. ita Zavala aparecerán en su boleta de votación por primera vez este Septiembre. Ellos buscan servir en el Consejo Escolar de sus comunidades. Personas como Edgar, Rocío, y Juanita, así como miles de otras personas en Iowa que se ofrecen voluntariamente para servir a su comunidad, le añaden clase, dignidad, y compasión a nuestra democracia. Ellos son el verdadero legado de la historia progresista e incluyente de Iowa. Hoy le estamos pidiendo a la gente de Iowa que hagan una decisión. Podemos aceptar las ideas de los demagogos y el sensacionalismo de la política en este país que se alimenta de las personas débiles o marginadas, con el propósito de recibir atención y hacer puntos políticos a bajo precio. O podemos unirnos a aquellos en nuestras comunidades que se han comprometido a hacer el trabajo verdadero y difícil de utilizar al gobierno y al dialogo político para convertir a nuestro estado en un mejor lugar para todos. Rhetoric against Latinos: We’re better than this, Iowa

Demagogue: (noun) a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument. Two years ago, Congressman Steve King made headlines for saying that undocumented immigrants had calves the size of cantaloupes from trafficking drugs from Mexico. The leading candidate for the Republican Party Presidential nomination has received tremendous attention for claiming undocumented immigrants are murderers, rapists, and drug dealers. In addition, multiple candidates for president call for amending the Constitution in order to revoke the citizenship of babies born in this country to undocumented immigrants. Then on Aug. 17, popular local radio host Jan Mickelson proposed enslaving undocumented immigrants. It is appalling to believe that the following proposal was broadcast on WHO Radio: “Anyone who is in the state of Iowa, who is not here legally and who cannot demonstrate their legal status to the satisfaction of the local and state authorities here in the state of Iowa, become property of the state of Iowa.” Mickelson defended his proposal with the following remark: “Well, what’s wrong with slavery?” This week, we joined with other Iowans appalled by Mickelson’s rhetoric in filing a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission. People who would make insulting comments like those referenced above fail to see the humanity in all of us and are not worthy of serious discussion in our public arenas. Worse yet, they do so only to appeal to the prejudices and insecurities of people worried about
a changing world where work pays less and communities feel less safe and welcoming. But that FCC complaint is not enough. As Iowans, we have a responsibility to hold our elected officials and civic leaders to a higher standard. Politics is an opportunity to lift up the weak and the marginalized among us through a government focused on expanding opportunity for all. The best public servants do so because they see the humanity in all of us. Iowans should tune out the demagoguery and remember our shared history of standing up for the disenfranchised far before it was popular or politically convenient. On Independence Day 1839, in the first decision handed down by the Iowa Supreme Court, justices ruled that Ralph Montgomery, a black man in forced bondage, was not anyone’s property. In 1869, Iowa became the first state to admit a woman to the practice of law. And in 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples did indeed have the right to marry. These are just three of many examples of Iowa’s better angels shining through. We love our state and our shared
Latino heritage, so we humbly offer one more example. We founded the Latino Political Network to educate and empower Latinos to run for public office. Out of 7,400 Iowa elective offices, fewer than 20 are held by Latinos. There just aren’t enough elected, empowered Latinos to counter the demagogues. We’re proud that three participants — Rocio Hermosillo, Edgar Ortiz, and Juanita Zavala — are all on the ballot for the first time this September to serve on the Des Moines and Ottumwa school boards. People like Edgar, Rocio, and Juanita, as well as the thousands of other Iowans who offer themselves up to serve their communities, add class, dignity, and compassion to our democracy. They are the legacy of Iowa’s progressive, inclusive history. So today we’re asking all Iowans to make a choice. We can embrace demagogues and the reality tv-ization of American politics that preys on the weak and voiceless among us for attention and cheap political gain. Or we can stand with those who are committed to the real, hard work of using government and political dialogue to make our state a better place. That is our shared Iowa heritage. That is our choice.
