Arkansanos ayudan a un hondureño a recibir nuevo brazo Viene de la Portada

Recoger cosas es algo que Jesús García no ha sido capaz de hacer durante los últimos seis años de su vida. Un trágico accidente de tren en Honduras lo dejó sin brazos, pero el sábado su mundo mejoró notablemente.

Jesús García dijo: “Se siente muy bien. Gracias al Señor ... Por los últimos seis años la he pasado muy triste ... he tenido momentos que pensé en quitarme la vida.”

Un rayo de esperanza llegó cuando Sandee Haslauer, directora de la Misión de Honduras de la Iglesia Cristo Rey (Christ the King Church) en Little Rock durante los últimos ocho años se enteró de García y fue a verlo en Honduras. Ella hizo los arreglos para que Garcia fuera a la misión de la iglesia cuando los cirujanos estarían allí el verano pasado.

Haslauer dijo: “Nuestro cirujano ortopédico Laurie Hughes vio a Jesús y de inmediato tomó el teléfonoy le hablo a Mike Horton para ver si estaría interesado en la provisión de una prótesis para Jesús”.

la familia de Cristo Rey donó millas de viajero frecuente para García y su acompanante, Dean Martin, para llegar aquí y la Diócesis de Little Rock le colaboró con ayuda financiera para el viaje. Otra familia de la iglesia abrió su casa dando un lugar para alojarse durante las dos semanas que estarán en la ciudad. Horton’s Orthotics and Prosthetics donó el nuevo miembro y cerca de 30 horas de trabajo para hacerlo, una donación de casi $ 10.000.

A tragic train accident in Honduras left him without his arms but Saturday his world remarkably improved.

Jesus Garcia said, “It feels goo. Thank the Lord…The last six years I have spent very sad…Sometimes there were moments I thought about taking my own life.”

A ray of hope came when Sandee Haslauer, Hondura’s Mission director for Christ the King Church in Little Rock for the past eight years found out about Garcia and went to see him in Honduras. She made arrangements for him to go the church’s mission when surgeons would be there last summer.

Haslauer said, “Our orthopedic surgeon Laurie

Hughes saw Jesus and immediately got on the phone to see if Mike Horton would be interested in providing a prosthesis for Jesus.”

That got the ball rolling, but they soon determined Garcia would have to travel to Arkansas to be fitted for his new arm and without a birth certificate getting him a visa was a challenge. When they finally got through the red tape a Christ the King family donated frequent flier miles for Garcia and his caretaker, Dean Martin, to get here and the Little Rock Diocese pitched in to help fund the trip. Another family from the church opened up their home giving a place to stay for the two weeks they are in town. Horton’s Orthotics and Prosthetics donated the new

limb and about 30 hours of labor to make it, a nearly $10,000 donation. It’s a small price Mike Horton says to be able to share his skills with a young man who otherwise wouldn’t have access to a new arm.

Mike Horton said, “It’s extremely rewarding because it’s such a life changing opportunity for him because he literally can’t even brush his own teeth.

He can’t go to the restroom by himself. Now he can do that.”

Haslauer said, “So it takes a village, all of us together made it possible for Jesus to come here and get this life changing prosthesis for himself.”

Horton says they are only fitting him with one arm because it would be too cumbersome for Garcia to have a second prosthesis because of where the

other arm was amputated. He will spend the next few weeks in therapy at Physical Therapy Institute of Little Rock learning to use his new arm before returning to Honduras.

Christ the King Church began a medical mission to the Diocese of Trujillo in 1996 and later added construction, education and evangelization projects. Last summer the missionaries served 4,900 people, providing 1,400 pairs of glasses and 22 hearing aids and extracting 717 teeth. The mission regularly operates three village clinics, a dental clinic and eye clinic in addition to providing about 60 surgeries. One or two Hondurans with extensive medical needs are brought to Little Rock each year for surgeries or prosthetics through

the donations of frequent flyer miles, lodging and hospitals.

Haslauer said she believes the mission will be even more effective in Honduras this year because Mike Horton and his brother Chris are attending the

missions in March and June for the first time and will set up an orthotics lab and recycle old prosthetics that are no longer usable in the United States.

There are hundreds of amputees in Honduras.

WASHINGTON, DC The nation’s eyes are turning towards Alabama, as a series of developments with the state’s “show me your papers” antiimmigration law intersect with political dynamics surrounding the upcoming Republican presidential primary and general election.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, “As political observers turn their attention to the Republican primary in Alabama next week, they shouldn’t miss the fact that this state will have a huge impact on the 2012 elections. Alabama may be safe GOP territory, but it is also an example to Latino voters of what the Romney ‘selfdeportation’ plan looks like in

real life. Recent polling and analysis from leading GOPers shows that the Republicans’ anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric have made them toxic to Latino voters, with big consequences in swing states in November.”

Among the recent news and developments drawing attention to Alabama: Court blocks two provisions of Alabama’s immigration law: Yesterday, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked two provisions of Alabama’s immigration law, reminding us yet again of the state’s unprecedented overreach. As the Montgomery Advertiser noted, “A federal appeals court Thursday blocked two sections of Alabama’s immigration law, which is known as HB 56, including one that had been

ELECTIONS 2012: Attention to Alabama’s Anti-immigrant Law grows partially enjoined by a U.S. District Judge in Montgomery.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals enjoined Section 27 of the law, which forbids Alabama courts to enforce contracts between unlawfully present aliens and parties who know their immigration status. The appellate court also blocked Section 30 of the law, which forbids state and local agencies from doing business with undocumented aliens.”

Yesterday’s ruling adds another reminder about the importance of the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court examination of the Arizona “papers, please” law – the precursor to Alabama’s legislation.

Immigrant and civil rights leaders join forces in effort to repeal state’s anti-immigration law: Civil rights, immigrant rights, and labor leaders from throughout the nation are joining with an array of state leaders to protest the Alabama anti-immigration law. The Associated Press notes that young people and first time protestors have joined the historic Selma-to-Montgomery march this year, inspired by the Alabama anti-immigration

laws similarity to Jim Crow-era policies.

With the Republican presidential primary process continuing to unfold, the race comes to Alabama next Tuesday – the state with the most delegates at stake among the four locations holding GOP primaries or caucuses that day. Given the salience of Alabama’s immigration law, it will be important to watch and see whether Mitt Romney and the other candidates

embrace HB56 as a “model” for the nation – as Romney did in regards to Arizona’s immigration law before that state’s recent primary. HB 56 is the Romney self-deportation policy in effect, written by his immigration advisor Kris Kobach.

The role of Alabama in national politics will be the focus of a press call next Monday, March 12th at 12 PM, as immigrant reform experts and leaders from religious and

immigrant youth communities will address the devastating toll that “self deportation” policies like Alabama’s HB 56 have had on Latino families, and the way this issue moves Latino voters.

¿Qué es un Hogar Médico?

Antes de que su niño se hubiera inscrito en ARKids First, usted probablemente nunca había oído el término “hogar médico” o Medical Home. A diferencia del techo sobre su cabeza, un hogar médico no es un edificio, pero un solo médico para su hijo al que él va por sus chequeos o cuando esta enfermo. Este médico es el médico de atención primaria de su hijo o “PCP”. ¿Porque me debo preocupar por tener un Hogar Médico? Before your child was enrolled in ARKids First, you had probably never heard the term “medical home.” Unlike the roof over your head, a medical home is not a building, but a single doctor your child goes to for checkups or when he gets sick. This doctor is your child’s primary care physician or “PCP.” Why should you care about having a Medical Home? Many health plans, including ARKids First and Medicaid, require that you select a doctor as your PCP to help you manage your care. Your child’s primary care physician will

know what sicknesses and health care your child may have had.

Your PCP will know when it is time to get your child vaccinated, will be able to recommend important screenings and can keep a file of important things like drug allergies. Your doctor has your child’s medical records and will be able to treat your child based on her medical history. Your PCP can not only handle your child’s basic medical needs, but can also refer your child for special care and admit your child into the hospital, if needed.

When do you need to go to the doctor? If your child is

sick, please don’t wait. Make an appointment with your primary care physician sooner rather than later. You need to get your child in to see the doctor when the problem is easier to diagnose and treat. That’s one of the reasons it’s so important to select your child’s PCP now, before they need an office visit.

Believe it or not, even kids who aren’t sick need to go to the doctor periodically. That’s right, it’s called “well-child care.”

Medicaid pays for children to the see their PCP even when they are not sick. At these visits, the doctor will make sure your child gets the

Consulado Mexicano subscribe acuerdo para proteger a trabajadores de discriminación Viene de la Portada

Edgardo Briones Velazquez, Consul Ad Interim of the Mexican Consulate and Katharine W. Kores, Director of the Memphis District Office of the EEOC signed the agreement.

The Mexican Consulate in Little Rock provides services to preserve the rights of Mexican Nationals residing in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.

The Memphis District Office of the EEOC enforces federal employment discrimination laws and has jurisdiction over Arkansas, Tennessee and the

northernmost 17 counties in Mississippi.

“This agreement is an important part of the Commission’s commitment to ensure that workers are aware of their rights to be free from discrimination in the workplace.

We are looking forward to a long and productive working relationship with the Mexican Consulate,” said Director Kores.

The Little Rock Area Office of the EEOC and the Mexican Consulate have worked together on outreach programs including providing information to Mexican Nationals at the local

consulate and participating in an informational program on a local Spanish language radio station.

Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, the Commission will expand its cooperation with the Mexican Consulate. The Commission will provide to the consulate Spanish language materials explaining the laws enforced by the EEOC. The Commission also will provide representatives to meet with Mexican Nationals in Arkansas and Tennessee to provide information and counseling regarding employment discrimination. The Commission

El Consulado de México en Little Rock proporciona servicios para preservar los derechos de los ciudadanos mexicanos que residen en Arkansas, Tennessee y Oklahoma. La Oficina del Distrito de Memphis de la EEOC vela por el cumplimiento de las leyes federales para evitar la discriminación en el empleo y tiene jurisdicción sobre Arkansas, Tennessee y los 17 condados ubicados más al norte en Mississippi.

“Este acuerdo es una parte importante año del compromiso de la Comisión para asegurar que los trabajadores sean conscientes

de sus derechos para estar exentos de discriminación en el centro de trabajo. Prevemos una larga y productiva relación de trabajo con el Consulado de México”, expresó la Directora Kores.

La Oficina de Little Rock de la EEOC y el Consulado de México han trabajado juntos en programas de extensión incluyendo el suministro de información a los ciudadanos mexicanos en el consulado local y la participación en un programa informativo a través de la estación local de radio en español.

Conforme a los términos del Memorando de Entendimiento, la Comisión ampliará su cooperación con el Consulado Mexicano. La Comisión proveerá al consulado materiales en idioma español explicando la legislación que la EEOC propugna y vela por su aplicación. La Comisión también brindará representantes

para que se reúnan con las Ciudadanos Mexicanos en Arkansas y Tennessee a efectos de proporcionarles información y asesoramiento respecto a la discriminación laboral. La Comisión y el Consulado de México trabajarán en conjunto para proporcionar información en forma regular sobre la discriminación en los centros laborales en las estaciones de radio en idioma español en sus respectivas jurisdicciones.

La Comisión es responsable de hacer cumplir las leyes federales que prohíben la discriminación basada en la raza, el color, el sexo (incluyendo embarazo), religión, nacionalidad, edad, discapacidad, información genética y represalias.
