Arkansas women getting paid 23% less than men KATV Channel 7 Little Rock, AR Despite laws prohibiting it, wage discrimination based on gender still exists in Arkansas. Women in the Natural State on average make 20 cents less on the dollar than their male counterparts. It is 2015, and on average, women still make 78 cents to a man’s dollar. A new report goes beyond that oft-quoted statistic, and examines this discrepancy
along racial, geographical and educational lines. The disparity exists for many reasons according to equal pay advocates. Much has to do with societal norms like women leaving work to have children, men generally being in higher positions of power and many women’s hesitation to ask for more money. “I saw two of my co-workers paychecks one time and there was a little bit more that they were getting and they were in the same po-
sition as I was,” said Eva Reyes, who said she is employed as a nurse. Both state and national figures back that up. According to 2012 Census data, women working fulltime jobs in central Arkansas made $33,788 annually while men made $42,082. The gap is even worse in other parts of the state and significantly worse for African-American and Latina women. “They are doing the same jobs or jobs of equal or
comparable worth as men are doing and yet are still ending up with that kind of pay disparity,” said Denise Hoggard, employment attorney. Hoggard has been practicing employment law for the last 30 years and said during her time focusing on employment discrimination the pay gap has only budged by about 10 percent. April: Sexual Assault Awareness Month íHola! Arkansas Little Rock, AR In the United States April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). During April people raise awareness about sexual violence and how to prevent it.
Since 2001, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center has provided resources to help individuals and organizations. Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge issued the following statement after addressing the Arkansas Coalition Against Domestic Violence membership meeting: “April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, and I am committed to doing everything I can to raise awareness about this issue across our State. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, one in four women and one in seven men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner. In 2014, there were nine confirmed homicides in Arkansas that were a result of domestic violence. See ASSAULT Page 3A
