LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Department of Higher Education began notifying high school seniors who were awarded Academic Challenge Scholarships for the upcoming academic year. Of the 8,000 notified in the first round of awards, some 3,500 had accepted and the numbers were increasing by the hour as
applications were processed, awarded and accepted. “We are pleased to award these students who have worked hard to prepare for continuing their education,” said Shane Broadway, interim director of ADHE, “and we encourage them to log into the ADHE website – the sooner the better – to accept the award.” Continued on Page 5A

Initiative meets challenges of Hispanics in Arkansas ¡Hola! Arkansas Staff Writers
FAYETTEVILLE, AR – The Bilingual Scholars Initiative, a collaborative five-year effort of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the University of Arkansas, NorthWest Arkansas Community College and the Springdale School District, aims to meet the unique challenges, many in the education system, of the growing Hispanic population in Northwest Arkansas. The initiative, which focuses on scholarship support for future teachers, college prep programs and campus-based scholar
chapters, will begin during the 2012-13 academic year. “We think bringing together the educational players and the local Latino community in this four-way collaboration is right for mutual Northwest Arkansas community gain,” said Frank D. Alvarez, president and chief executive officer of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. “Helping inform and engage Latino parents in the education of their children is an important competency, and HSF is pleased to have been selected to play our role.” Continued on Page 9A

Spanish Radio Station raises a record $156,000 for Arkansas Children’s Hospital during 3-day radiothon ¡Hola! Arkansas Staff Writers
SPRINGDALE, AR - During the past weekend Hispanic radio listeners in northern Arkansas raised a record-setting $156,087 in pledges and donations to benefit Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Radio listeners at station KSEC 95.7 FM responded to the three day Spanish language radiothon that took place on-air and at the station’s studio in Springdale.
This is the third year that KSEC-FM, also known as “La Zeta” in the Hispanic community, partners with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Arkansas Children’s Hospital to raise funds for the hospital. Station owners Eddie Vega and his wife Letty Vega are very pleased with the community’s response to the on-air effort to raise funds for children served at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. “All of this is possible by the excellent and
great work of our entire team at the station including our on-air talent like El Travieso, La Maga, El Sherife, La Flor de Durango, La Gris, Robert El Guero, El Monagillo and El Tabo” said Mr. Vega. “We also are extremely grateful to the great work done by La Maga, who also heads up our promotions department, she set a record by recruiting 90 volunteers from our listeners to staff donation drop off centers at
various locations in metro Little Rock, Springdale and other communities in northeastern Arkansas” added Letty Vega. The volunteers collected more than $22,000 in cash donations at the various locations including at the radio station’s parking lot. The three-day radiothon began at 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday broadcasting for 12 hours daily and from 10 a.m. on Sunday until 6 p.m. Continued on Page 4A

ADHE concede 8,000 Becas Desafío Académico a recientes graduados Viene de la Portada De los 8.000 notificados en la primera ronda de becas concedidas, unos 3.500 han aceptado esta subvención y las cifras iban en aumento cada hora conforme las solicitudes se procesaban, concedían y aceptaban. “Estamos muy contentos de premiar a estos estudiantes que han trabajado duro para prepararse para continuar su educación”, dijo Shane Broadway, director interino del ADHE, “y les animamos a ingresar a la página web de ADHE - cuanto antes, mejor - para aceptar el premio”. “El plazo de postulación para todos los programas estatales de ayuda financiera es el 1ro. de junio para los dos semestres de otoño y de primavera para el próximo año académico, requiriéndose la presentación de todos los materiales necesarios para esa fecha también. Las solicitudes se pueden llenar en línea en www.adhe.com o a través de la aplicación gratuita para teléfonos inteligentes YOUniversal. Hasta el jueves, 14.000 estudiantes tradicionales habían comenzado o terminado el proceso de postulación, y 4.000 estudiantes no tradicionales habían postulado. ADHE awards 8,000 Academic Challenge Scholarships to recent grads From the Cover The application deadline for all of the state’s financial aid programs is June 1 for both the fall and spring semesters for the upcoming academic year, with all necessary materials required by that date as well. Submissions can be completed online at www.adhe.com or through the free YOUniversal smart phone app. As of Thursday, 14,000 traditional students had begun or completed the application process,
and 4,000 non-traditional students had applied. Each student who graduates from an Arkansas high school in 2012 and completes the eligibility qualifications is guaranteed to receive an Academic Challenge Scholarship, funded in part through the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery. Those enrolled at fouryear universities will receive $4,500 over the course of two semesters and those at two-year colleges will receive $2,250. Award amounts are set annually
by the legislature. Last year, the Academic Challenge Scholarship was awarded to more than 31,100 students – from traditional recent high school graduates to non-traditional students. A large number of students are expected to maintain their eligibility and continue receiving the monetary award for the upcoming year. Those who haven’t met continuing eligibility requirements have an opportunity to complete additional credit hours and improve grade
point averages if needed during the summer term. There are an additional 5,800 non-traditional students eligible for the scholarship, but current legislation limits funding to $12 million for that group of students. Any new awards for those students will be determined at a later date, based on funding availability. Those who received the scholarship in 2010 will continue to receive $5,000 and $2,500 respectively, as long

“Creemos que integrar a los actores educativos y la comunidad latina local en esta colaboración de cuatro vías es lo adecuado para mutuo beneficio de la comunidad del Noroeste de Arkansas”, dijo Frank D. Álvarez, presidente y director ejecutivo del Fondo Hispano de Becas. “Ayudar, informar e involucrar a los padres latinos en la educación de sus hijos es
una competencia importante, y el HSF se complace en haber sido seleccionados para realizar nuestro función”. La iniciativa es financiada en parte por una subvención de $775.000 de la Fundación de la Familia Walton. La mayor parte de la subvención, $615.000, se dedica a financiar la beca. Gran parte se destinará a los estudiantes que actualmente asisten a NWACC y a la Universidad de Arkansas que se han identificado
como estudiantes de la carrera de educación que tienen previsto enseñar en el nivel secundario. Algo de ayuda en becas también se destinará a los juniors y seniors de las escuelas de Springdale que tienen la intención de volver como maestros de K-12. El objetivo final es lograr cerca de 90 profesores en los próximos cinco años, que se convertirán en maestros bilingües en las escuelas de Springdale. Parte de la subvención

The initiative is funded in part by a $775,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation. The majority of the grant, $615,000, is designated to scholarship support. Much will go to students currently attending NWACC and the University of Arkansas who have identified themselves as education majors who intend to teach at the secondary level. Some scholarship support will also go to juniors and seniors from Springdale schools who have the intention of returning as K-12 teachers. The ultimate goal is to produce nearly 90 teachers over the next five years who will become bilingual teachers in Springdale schools. Part of the grant will help support the initiative’s Steps for Success Program. Each half-day program offers a range of college preparation workshops for middle and high school students and their parents. This unique approach utilizes community volunteers as college prep coaches and has a customized track of concurrent workshops for students in each grade level with separate parent workshops in Spanish and English. The curriculum covers intensive instruction on how to take the
SAT or ACT; information on the financial aid process; assistance writing a personal statement/ essay for college applications and scholarships; and guidance finding a college well-suited to the student’s educational background and interests. The Bilingual Scholars Initiative will also support two Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar Chapters — one at NWACC and one at the university — that are critical components of the initiative’s retention efforts. Scholar Chapters have been in existence since 2001, and they are geared toward the needs of Latino college students. Student coordinators at each campus work closely with Hispanic Scholarship Fund staff to customize programming — academic and outreach — to meet the needs of their respective campus and local community. The two Northwest Arkansas chapters will join the 37 existing chapters at colleges and universities around the United States. “This initiative is a significant recognition of the value of bilingualism for America today,” said Luis Restrepo, assistant vice provost for diversity affairs at the University of Arkansas. “More than filling a translation need, these teachers will be living
examples of the importance of multicultural perspectives in a multilingual world, where Spanish is a vital part of the fabric of the new American reality.” In 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund was founded with the belief that the country prospers when all Americans have access to the opportunities that a college education can afford. As the nation’s leading Hispanic higher education fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund works to address the barriers that keep many Latinos from earning a college degree. To date, the fund has awarded over $360 million in scholarships and has supported a broad range of outreach and education programs to help students and their families navigate collegiate life, from gaining admission and securing financial aid to finding employment after graduation. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund envisions a future where every Latino household will have at least one college graduate, creating an enduring impact on the college outlook of Latino families nationwide, and strengthening the American economy for generations to come.
