TEPEAPULCO, MEXICO - Es un domingo típico en el municipio de Tepeapulco, en el altiplano central de México. Las familias se reúnen, cocinan y se ponen al día. Y esa es la escena en la casa de Santiago Domínguez. A los 82 años de edad, es el patriarca de la familia. Lleva pantalones planchados, con su pelo oscuro alisado. A la hora del almuerzo, está rodeado por familiares. Pero una persona siempre falta: su hija, Rosa. En la sala, hay una foto de ella como una mujer joven. “Pensé que sólo estaría fuera tres o cuatro años, y luego volvería”, dijo Domínguez.

Pero han pasado 18 años desde que Rosa se fue a Arizona con sus dos hijos pequeños. Fueron ilegalmente a reunirse con el padre de los niños allí. Ella ahora tiene 43 años y nunca ha regresado a México. Sin papeles, es demasiado arriesgado. “Llegó un punto en que le dije, ‘Sabes, no estoy seguro si volveremos a vernos’”, dijo Domínguez. Pero ahora puede que sí. Un proyecto de ley propuesto del Senado permitiría que millones de inmigrantes que entraron ilegalmente a los EE.UU. soliciten la condición provisional y la oportunidad de trabajar legalmente y viajar al extranjero. WASHINGTON, DC Presidente Barak Obama y el Vicepresidente Joe Biden se reunieron en la Oficina Oval con jóvenes inmigrantes que recibieron acción diferida y con los hermanos y los cónyuges de los inmigrantes indocumentados. Dicha reunión fue una oportunidad importante para que el Presidente y el Vicepresidente se reunieran con las familias que están directamente afectadas por el sistema de inmigración descompuesto que tiene nuestra nación. Los Dreamers compartieron historias de cómo sus vidas se han visto positivamente afectadas por el proceso de acción diferida y enfatizaron que ellos y sus familias necesitan una solución permanente que les permita contribuir plenamente al país que ellos consideran su patria. Durante la reunión, el Presidente reiteró su compro-

miso a aprobar este año un proyecto de ley de reforma migratoria bipartidista de sentido común. El expresó claramente que, aunque el proyecto de ley actual no es algo perfecto, sí representa un paso importante hacia los principios generales que tienen que formar parte de todo paquete de reforma migratoria. WASHINGTON, DC President Barak Obama and the Vice President Joe Biden met in the Oval Office with young immigrants who received deferred action and with the siblings and spouses of undocumented immigrants. This meeting was an important opportunity for the President and the Vice President to meet with families who are directly affected by our nation’s broken immigration system. The Dreamers shared how their lives have been

positively affected by the deferred action process and emphasized that they and their families need a permanent solution that will allow them to fully contribute to the country they call home. At the meeting, President Obama reiterated his commitment to passing a bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform bill this year. He made clear that while the current bill is not perfect, it does represent an important step towards the broad principles that need to be part of any immigration reform package.

The President underscored that their stories are a good reminder that immigration isn’t just a policy issue, but it’s about our families, our communities and it’s about our common future. The President and the Vice President thanked participants for their leadership, courage and on-going efforts to move immigration reform legislation forward. The President also encouraged them to continue to share their stories with the American public to move the hearts and minds of individual leaders and to propel the immi-

gration debate forward. Participants are visiting Washington to speak to their elected representatives as the Senate considers immigration reform legislation. ARKADELPHIA, AR ARMOM es una clínica dental gratuita anual de dos días patrocinado por la Asociación Dental del Estado de Arkansas para los residentes de Arkansas marginados. ARMOM proporciona atención dental gratis para el alivio del dolor a los residentes de Arkansas, muchos de los cuales provienen de familias trabajadoras que no tienen acceso o no pueden pagar un seguro dental. Desde que ARMOM se inició en 2007, más de 8.084 pacientes han sido vistos en sólo diez días en total de la clínica. ARKADELPHIA, AR ARMOM is an annual two-day free dental clinic sponsored by the Arkansas State Dental Association for underserved Arkansans. ARMOM provides free dental care for the relief of pain to underserved Arkansans, many of whom are from working families who do not have access or cannot afford dental insurance. Since ARMOM was started in 2007, over 8,084 patients have been seen in only ten total clinic days. El 14 de junio se celebra el 236o aniversario de la bandera de los EE.UU. They crossed into Arizona illegally, picked produce, and now live near Phoenix. “They’ve taken the door, the windows,” Cervera said in

Spanish as she stood in front of her sister’s house. Since her sister’s been gone, thieves have stripped her house clean, even the roof. It’s a cinder block skeleton. Cervera said she and her sister feel impotencia, powerlessness—they want to see each other, but can’t. Her sister couldn’t visit when their mother was dying. And a few years ago, Cervera couldn’t get a tourist visa to see her sister in Arizona.

Cervera said she lacked what’s needed for a US visa: things like a bank account, a business, or a credit card. But now she can envision her sister—and her sister’s kids—visiting Mexico again. “They are motivated with the dream that this immigration reform is going to happen,” Cervera said of her relatives in Arizona. But as Congress debates the legislation, the wait continues. Back in Tepeapulco,

Domínguez’s tradition is to sing to his daughter a famous ballad over the phone. It’s called “Sin Ti” or Without You. “What else matters if being far from you makes me cry,” he sang. Over a 1,000 miles away, in Arizona, his daughter Rosa has become an activist for immigration reform. She asks to only use her first name because of her unauthorized status. “I want this to happen

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas ha ganado recientemente la atención nacional para la elaboración de dos partidos de la Opción Privada de Arkansas. LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas recently gained national attention for the bipartisan crafting of the Arkan-

sas Private Option. This series of healthcare bills will bring health insurance to 250,000 working

our current Medicaid system. While this legislative effort was historic, it was not unprecedented. In 1997, another bipartisan effort created the ARKids First program. The program was designed for families with household incomes too high to qualify for existing Medicaid programs, but too low to afford private insurance coverage. Recently, we learned that Arkansas now ranks fourth nationally in providing coverage to children. Today, 94 percent of Arkansas children have health insurance. Insurance coverage makes a huge difference in the health of a child. When kids get the care they need when they need it, their health is more likely to

stabilize and to improve. Children who avoid poor health at a young age stand a better chance of maintaining a lifetime of mental and physical well-being. ARKids First benefits all Arkansans, even those who aren’t parents or children who use it. The program helps slow the growth of health-care costs, costs that all Arkansans pay. When children have no insurance, their parents often cannot afford to take them to the doctor until their health deteriorates. As an illness worsens, care becomes more expensive, and costs spiral higher. Often, those costs are passed along to other Arkansans who do carry insurance when parents are unable to pay for that care out-of-pocket. These are many of the

same arguments made in recent months for the Arkansas Private Option, and we hope to see similar improvements in health outcomes for working adults. Nearly 93 percent of children eligible for ARKids are now enrolled, but there are still 46,000 kids in our State who are uninsured. Aerospace Adventures

June 10 -21 9 am - 1 pm Cloverdale Magnet Middle School For Cloverdale rising 7th and 8th graders Aerospace Adventures is a summer enrichment program for Cloverdale Magnet Middle School students that teaches ordinary subjects in extraordinary ways. Math Journeys

Students will also select from various classes such as Water Rocketry, Engineering Design Challenges, Cooking, Race Cars, Motion and Design, and Art, in order to apply, practice, and deepen their knowledge of how to apply fractions in daily living.

Practice Math Skills

Math proficiency can get lost in the summer shuffle, too. Look for summer camp programs that utilize math skills like robotics or space camps. Find ways to add math to daily activities. Ask your child to calculate the volume of water in the swimming pool. Or if you are planning a trip this summer, let your teen set a budget, calculate fuel needs or figure the distance between destinations.

30 minutes a day

Set aside 30 minutes a day for reading, math worksheets, crossword puzzles or brain teasers. Doing these activities as a family makes learning fun. For more information about these and other summer programs, go to lrsd.org.
