Diaz’s three-minute clip “The Secrets of Strangers” shows pairs of individuals from various backgrounds, ages and cultures, who introduce themselves and shortly after nervously reveal they have a secret to tell: Their undocumented status. Rocsi Diaz told the project was “near and dear to my heart” because she went through the immigration process when she first arrived to the United States

But I never forgot about those students who were in danger of dropping out or who might be a few credits short of graduating. The reasons why Hispanic students drop out of school, include poor aca-
demic preparation, boredom, language acquisition, length of time in the United States, income levels, life situations (pregnancy, family emergencies) and gender crises, as males tend to drop out at higher rates than females. Unfortunately, the dropout rate for all Latino students is very alarming, and steps must be taken to remedy the current situation. The parent is dealing with a child who has
dropped out, or the student who should have graduated this June. You can help your children immeasurably by taking the following steps: Learn more about reenrollment options available in your school district and make sure that he or she signs up for after-school programs and summer activities to help build skills and connect with others. If your child is older or reenrollment is not an option, encourage him or her get a
GED or to take Adult Education Classes. Help your child map out a path to enter a community college or vocational school after obtaining a GED. If reenrolling at the same school is not an option, there are continuation schools that provide a focused environment for students who have faced challenges including, for many young Latina students, pregnancy. Some traditional schools provide childcare
and flexible schedules to allow these young mothers to continue studying. The adult students can obtain their GED and consider the option of taking some CLEP exams to obtain the necessary credits to take the next steps in their educational journey. Without a high school diploma or GED, the opportunities for economic mobility are limited. Therefore, it is important to identify early on any is-
sues that might lead a student to drop out. Parental involvement is even more crucial in Latino families, since many of us make educational decisions as a family. Parents must remember to use all the resources at hand and to seek professional help from school and community organizations. Three University of Arkansas at Little Rock students attended the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) national conference in New York City, courtesy of the Richard Family Trust and Walmart.
The students, Javier Contreras and Carlos Sepulveda, both economics majors from Little Rock, and Sandra Carmona-Garcia, an undeclared sophomore, are actively involved in the UALR chapter of LULAC as vice president, parliamentarian, and secretary respectively. They traveled to New
York July 8 for 4 days of the convention with grants to cover airfare and hotels from the Richard Family Trust and conference registration fees paid for by the Walmart Foundation. The students are also recipients of $1,000 LULAC academic scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic school year.

For some middle schoolers, sexting may even be seen as a safer alternative to actual sexual activity. It’s not without risks, given how quickly and widely messages and pictures can spread, it can have some unexpected and possibly devastating consequences. So parents and others who live and interact with
youth do need to talk with them about sexting. But the more important thing we can do is talk with them generally about sex, sexuality, peer pressure, peer relationships, and the importance of making healthy, safe decisions. The more we can keep the lines of communication open, and find nonjudgmental, loving ways to teach teens to make those good decisions, the less likely it is that they will get in trouble from sexting or anything else.
