Salma Hayek joined host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to discuss her recent project “The Prophet,” an animated film adaptation of Lebanese writer Kahlil Gibran’s 1923 book of the same name. But when a viewer asked the 48 year old actress if she had been discriminated against for her accent or background before she became famous, the star revealed that fame was not a deterrent to discrimination.

“Of course, I’ve been discriminated,” Hayek told the host. “I think America has a very severe problem with discrimination that we try to overlook. It’s there.”

When Modarresy-Tehrani asked for a specific moment she experienced discrimination, the Mexican-born actress said there are “just so many” but she specifically recalled an incident in a Los Angeles movie theater when the actress and a friend tried to sit in the center of the theater near another patron.

Gloria Molina has achieved several firsts in her lifetime, the first Latina elected to the California State Legislature, the first Latina elected to the Los Angeles City Council and the first Latina elected to the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. Her victories came in the 80s and 90s, a decade or more after the 1965 Voting Rights Act became law and following legal challenges based on the law, including one that went all the way to the Supreme Court.

The 50th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a gem of the civil rights movement, but now arguably weaker than when it was signed by President Lyndon Johnson.

But for Latinos, often a footnote in the nation’s recall of voting rights discrimination, what is more significant is that it is also the anniversary of the 1975 extension of the Voting Rights Act. “It is important to celebrate the 50th anniversary of

the Voting Rights Act,” said Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of MALDEF. “But for the Latino community, the 40th anniversary of the 1975 extension of the act is just as important.”

Signed by then President Gerald Ford, a Republican, the extension ended discrimination against so called “language minorities,” the Mexican Americans of Texas and California, Puerto Ricans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Alaskans, Hawaiians and others who continued to be kept from voting for at least a decade after the Voting Rights Act became law.

That same year, the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP) was established by Willie Velasquez in San Antonio to register as many Latinos as possible.

Antonio Gonzalez, president of SVREP in San Antonio, said the Voting Rights Act challenges are happening while there are 10 million Latinos who are eligible to vote in the U.S. but are not registered and that number is growing.

That means forms, forms and more forms: the school directory, scholarships, sports teams, scouts, and the list goes on. As you get started, consider these tips for keeping your child’s personal information safe, from pre-school through college.

1. Safeguard your child’s SSN. Do not carry your child’s Social Security card with you. And do not give your child’s Social Security number (SSN) unless absolutely necessary. If someone wants it, ask why and find out how they will protect it.

2. Limit what kids share online. Teach kids not to post their name, address or

full date of birth on social media.

3. Use strong passwords on smartphones, tablets or laptops. Teach the importance of changing passwords and not sharing them. This is especially important for college students in a dorm or other shared living.

4. Use a crosscut shredder. Shred documents with your child’s personal information, when you no longer need them. Consider buying a shredder for your college student to shred pre-approved credit offers. In the wrong hands, those offers can be used for identity theft.

5. Know your rights under FERPA. The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy

Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student records.

FERPA requires schools to notify parents and guardians about their school directory policy. It also gives you the right to opt out of the release of directory information to third parties.

6. Get familiar with GPS services on mobile phones. You can use GPS to track where your child is but others can too. Tell your kids to limit the use of GPS so they are not broadcasting their location to the world.

Son la creación de un artista por ahora, pero si fueran oficiales, los utilizaríamos todo el tiempo.

Eduardo Salles, un diseñador con sede en la Ciudad de México que dirige el sitio CinismoIlustrado, ha lanzado un conjunto de 60 emojis inspirados en la historia de México, las artes y la cocina. El artista profundiza en la tradición mexicana, que abarca desde calaveras y tragos de tequila hasta Frida Kahlo y Emiliano Zapata.

Y sí, en caso de que se lo pregunte, también hay una emoji de un taco.

But only 25 percent of Americans now identify as Republicans, the lowest number, by the way, in more than a quarter-of-a-century. So what does that tell us? Well, Trump is the favorite of 22 percent of 25 percent of all Americans. Let’s see, that comes out to 5.5 percent

of all Americans. That means that just over 1 in 20 Americans supports Donald Trump for president.

That is not really very impressive. For the sake of comparison, it is worth noting that while 5.5 percent of Americans believe Trump should be president, 18 percent of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth, 23 percent of Americans believe they have seen a ghost, 10 percent of Americans believe that President Obama is a secret Muslim, 22 percent of Americans believe that President George W. Bush knew in advance about the 9/11 attacks and 10 percent of Americans believe that the moon landing was faked. Gee, that 5.5 percent number does not look so good now, does it?

After all, Donald Trump is leading the Republican field of seventeen competitors. But keep in mind that the other sixteen candidates are dividing up what we might reasonably think to be the “sane” part of the Republican Party.

Imagine if there were seventeen candidates and sixteen of them believed that the earth revolves around the sun and only one of them maintained

that the sun revolves around the earth. In a poll, the sixteen would divide the 82 percent of the voters who believed the earth revolves around the sun and the idiot would get 18 percent. That is pretty much what’s happening now in the Republican Party. But no one in the media wants to speak the truth, because that would turn politics into politics instead of a circus.

Another way to measure this is in poll match ups between the Republican candidates and Hillary Clinton. In head-to-head races, Clinton defeats every one of them, but who has the absolutely worst result in such a context the Donald, who loses by an astonishing 16 percent, or 6 percent worse than every other Republican candidate.

So, really, it is time to get serious. Trump is the guy who thinks the sun revolves around the earth.

Let’s treat him that way and move on to something serious like American democracy.

“Being our first game, everyone was a little excited and nervous, but I think we responded pretty well,” senior Ashleigh Ellenwood said. “Gabriella is a really hard worker and she made a big difference for us tonight.”

The Razorbacks came out in force in the first half, peppering Ladyjack keeper Lillie Ehlers with five shots on

goal. Ehlers began the match with four straight saves, but couldn’t stop Claire Kelley from putting Arkansas on the board in the 35th minute. Hannah Neece drove a corner kick into the box and DeLeon skied to get a head on it. The ball dropped to the foot of Kelley and she made no mistake, pushing it past the crowded scrum and into the net for her ninth career goal.

The 54th-minute shot beat substitute SFA keeper Allyson Smith, who would allow three scores on five shots on goal in the second half.

Arkansas didn’t stop its push there, and DeLeon was just getting started. In the 62nd minute, Erika Miller took a free kick inside the midfield circle that DeLeon was able to head over the Ladyjack keeper for the Razorbacks’ third goal of the

match. DeLeon then rounded out the Arkansas scoring in the 71st minute, adding her second marker off a cross from Katie Kienstra; Madeline Barnes notched a secondary assist on the tally.

“This is a pretty balanced team and we feel comfortable playing a lot of players,” head coach Colby Hale said.

“We have some young ones who did a great job and we have tremendous senior

leadership. We also have a group of six or seven juniors who play and contribute, so that’s a good group.”

When the buzzer sounded, the Razorbacks were 1-0 to open the year.
