Latin Pop Singer Luis Fonsi Joins Telemundo’s ‘Yo Soy El Artista’. Hosted by TV personality Lucero, the show also includes judges Chiquibaby and Boris Izaguirre. The program will include an international pool of 100 social-media influencers who will vote on which contestants will sing, dance and show their star quality and showmanship. The 13-week competition will eventually crown a winner as the ultimate

21st Century Community Learning Center grants to establish before- and after-school programs for youth, families and communities. “These grants provide much-needed educational support services to students and their families around the state,” ADE Commissioner Tony Wood said. “We are pleased to award funding for new and existing programs for the 2014-15 school year.” There are currently 91 CCLC programs, including the 21 new additions. The grant, totaling $11,456,864 for 2014-15, will fund tutoring, homework assistance, and academic enrichment Science, Technology, Engineering and Math activities at all CCLC programs around the state. Program activities also

may include remedial education activities, arts and music education activities, entrepreneurial education programs, expanded library hours, and drug and violence prevention programs. Arkansas became part of the U.S. Department of Education grant program in 2000, with CCLC programs serving more than 16,000 Arkansas youth last year. Nationally, more than $1.4 billion have been awarded over the years. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who meet Arkansas and U.S. Department of Education guidelines. To apply, a school must have a 40 percent or higher free/reduced lunch designation and operate programs a minimum of 12 hours each week, 25 weeks a year. Children are more likely to try a new fruit or vegetable if they helped grow it. Gardening also increases self-esteem and provides a fun way to be physically active. A child’s age may determine how he or she can help in a garden. Always be sure to supervise children when

they help in a garden. Tasks for children may include preparing soil in containers, planting seeds, watering plants, and pulling weeds. Children can also help pick fruits and vegetables, although, they may need help determining when to harvest some of the produce. Children can also help wash and prepare the fresh produce. One way to involve children in gardening is to talk to them. Measure the plants

as they grow. Talk about the colors of the fruits and vegetables. Tasting the fruits and vegetables is also a good way to introduce children to new foods and flavors. What is needed to start a family garden? First, choose a small plot of ground that gets plenty of sunlight. If space is not available, container gardening is a convenient option. Buckets, dishpans, or milk jugs can be used. Potting soil will be needed for container gar-

dens. Seeds or young plants will need to be chosen. Hand tools, such as spades and rakes can help with digging weeding, although, old spoons and forks work just as well. Finally, make sure that water is available from a water hose or watering can. Before getting started, all gardeners must choose what to grow. Beets, tomatoes, okra, spinach, and zucchini are excellent options. Carrots, collard greens, lettuce, and peppers grow very well

in containers. Another fun option is to grow herbs. Herbs grow very well in containers and can fit on sunny window sills or kitchen counters. Fresh herbs also smell nice! Some of the best herbs for container gardens include basil, cilantro, chives, mint, rosemary, and thyme. Growing a garden is a great way to have fun as a family and create memories that will last a lifetime. Get growing!

Tech giant Apple earned some embarrassing headlines after releasing data revealing that they are still employing primarily white and Asian men in their best-paying jobs. It appears that, for all of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s tweeting about how “inclusion inspires innovation,” significant disparity between the rhetoric and the reality remains. While Apple’s striking demographic data is not unlike that of many other tech firms, the report was an uncomfortable reminder of how the tech world one of the most exciting, lucrative segments of the American economy can look a lot like an exclusive club that is not yet fully acknowledging the importance of America’s growing, emerging markets. For many in those markets

namely, women and people of color, the Apple data was also a stinging reminder that the iconic company like many of their tech brethren only seem to have a minority challenge when it comes to whom they hire. They have no problem targeting and profiting from consumers in emerging markets. They recognize their growth, so selling product to people of color is just good business. Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available for all undergraduates and graduates regardless of

are for the parents of all undergraduate or graduate school students. Disburse-

Even if you don’t think your financial situation qualifies, many institutional scholarships are sourced this way. Students also can apply for Pell Grants, which are based on financial need, college costs and enrollment status. The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant awards up to $4,000 per year for students with high financial needs and is administered by each school’s financial aid office.
