Kennedy Viene de la PORTADA En 1968, Romero era un estudiante de secundaria de 17 años y ayudante de camarero en el Hotel Ambassador de Los Ángeles, donde Kennedy se alojaba en la semana de las Primarias.

La familia de Romero se había mudado hacia el norte desde México siete años antes, y sabía que Kennedy había hecho una peregrinación en marzo para reunirse con el organizador de la Unión de Campesinos Agrícolas, César Chávez.

“I wanted to protect his head from the cold concrete,” he said.

Romero told that nobody else heard, but Kennedy spoke to him after being shot.

“First he asked, ‘Is everybody OK?’ and I told him, ‘Yes, everybody’s OK.’ And then he turned away from me and said, ‘Everything’s going to be OK.’” The teenager at first refused to wash, and he showed up at school the next day with Kennedy’s blood under his fingernails.

The emotional marks would last far longer.

Soon afterward, Romero quit the Ambassador because people kept asking to get their picture taken with him. He felt like he had to leave all of Los Angeles behind, as well, eventually settling in San Jose, where he has worked as a paver ever since.

That’s where Claudia Zwiener came into the picture. She came to California, and, together, they visited the site where the Ambassador once stood. Another day, Zwiener showed him a book that had a lot of pictures of the aftermath of Kennedy’s assassination, photos that Romero had never allowed himself to study.

When asked what he saw, Romero told “I saw a person in need, and another person trying to help him.”

September is National Preparedness Month PRNewswire Washington, DC Disasters like floods, hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, and earthquakes are a harsh and frequent reality for much of the country. According to a recent survey conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), progress has been made; however, fewer than half of Americans have discussed and developed an emergency plan with their household.

FEMA and the Ad Council launched a new series of public service announcements (PSAs) to encourage families to develop an emergency communication plan before a disaster occurs. An extension of the national

Candidatos Viene de la PORTADA Trump y los otros candidatos republicanos que han respaldado su llamado a no permitir la concesión de la ciudadanía automática a cualquier persona nacida en los Estados Unidos, han enfocado su argumento a los hijos de inmigrantes sin documentos en los Estados Unidos.

Pero la idea de cambiar la Decimocuarta Enmienda, que establece que “toda persona nacida o naturalizada en los Estados Unidos y sujeto a la jurisdicción, es ciudadano de los Estados Unidos y del estado donde reside”, plantea interrogantes sobre lo que debe decir el estatus de los padres sobre el destino de sus hijos nacidos en Estados Unidos.

Los padres de Jindal llegaron a los Estados Unidos de la India en 1971,

La historia latina estará en el centro de atención como parte de los eventos públicos gratuitos organizados por la Universidad de Arkansas, en el Centro de Historia y Cultura de Arkansas en Little Rock y organizaciones asociadas.

“Latino Americanos: 500 años de historia”, un proyecto especial del Centro de Historia y Cultura de Arkansas, utilizará documentales y discusiones comunitarias para explorar la rica y variada historia y experiencia de los latinos que ayudaron a dar forma a los Estados Unidos.

Hispanics have now become the largest minority group in the United Sates according to the latest Census data. In Arkansas, the number of people who identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino has grown 114.2% over the past 12 years.

¡Hola! Arkansas Little Rock, AR Latino history will be in the spotlight as part of free public events organized by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Center for Arkansas History and Culture and partner organizations.

“Latino Americans: 500 Years of History,” a special project of the Center for Arkansas History and Culture, will use documentary films and community discussions to explore the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos who helped shape the United States.

The program is centered around “Latino Americans”, a six-episode award-winning documentary that chronicles

As part of the project, members of the public are invited to screenings of the documentary as well as community discussions led by Chelsea Halstead and UALR-affiliated speakers. Halstead heads the Family Advocacy Program at the Colibrí Center for Human Rights, an organization working to end migrant death and related suffering on the

U.S.-Mexico border.

The activities kick off during National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs September 15-October 15 this year.

In addition to Halstead’s discussion of the human rights crisis on the Mexico border, community conversation topics will include: expansionism, Manifest Destiny, the Wild West, multiple wars Mexican-American, Spanish-American and World War II, the rise of organized labor, the Great Depression, the post-World War II boom, the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement, globalization, and the effects of technology.

Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a public programming initiative produced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). UALR’s Department of International and Second Language Studies and its Office of Campus Life, as well as the Clinton School of Public Service and the Arkansas Arts Center also partnered with the Center for Arkansas History and Culture.

There is also Luis Walter Alvarez, a physicist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize of Physics in 1968 and Junot Diaz, a Pulitzer Prize winner for his work in 2008 and MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipient in 2012, to name a couple of others.

Latinos have made many more contributions in literature, journalism, military, business and finance, arts and entertainment, as well as politics. Despite this it seems the narrative, especially for those in a position to command the attention of a wide audience, is to relegate Latinos to nothing more than criminals and toilet cleaners.

While there are success stories to point to there is much work to be done.

Take for example a report by the California legislature released last

month. It found “Latinos still make up a disproportionately small share of the state’s elected officials,” despite recently becoming the state’s largest ethnic group. Further, in critical areas like education Latinos continue to make significant inroads in closing the achievement gap, but still struggle to graduate high school and attend college.

Of those who do go on to college, about 22 percent actually earn a degree.

As presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said to the New York Times Magazine, “his [Donald Trump] slurring of the Latino community is not something that should be going on in the year 2015.” Exactly. We should be seen as more than criminals and toilet cleaners, and in my case, security guards, despite what some celebrities and politicians say and what is shown on television and film.

Latinos are lawyers, doctors, professors, writers and so on; not great in numbers, I concede, so there’s still much work to be done. But it’s possible.

The clinic provides workshops and teaches

workers how to draft a letter to demand unpaid wages. Workers are also given the opportunity to meet with law students and staff attorneys to discuss the possibility of filing a lawsuit against an employer.

In the last few years, the clinic has filed claims on behalf of workers to try to recover more than $700,000 in stolen wages.

Molina said that to this day, she still runs into workers who are waiting to get paid for work they did after Hurricane Katrina.

But also troubling, she said, are the stories of Latino immigrant workers who were injured on the job and didn’t get medical care or those who were harassed by employers when they demanded to get paid for their work.

Many became victims of wage theft and still haven’t gotten paid for the work they did to help rebuild New Orleans.

So great was the demand

for workers that the Bush administration temporarily suspended immigration regulations that required employers to verify the immigration status of people who worked for them.

In doing so, it allowed federal contractors to hire undocumented workers to help meet the demand.

Santos Alvarado, an immigrant from Honduras, left Texas and headed to New Orleans toward the end of 2005. When he got there, he joined 2,000 people who worked cleaning hospitals, schools and government buildings. They

La Selección Nacional de México sigue su preparación para el juego de vida o muerte ante la selección nacional de Estados Unidos el próximo 10 de octubre.

Dicho encuentro le dará el pase al equipo ganador a la Copa Confederaciones 2016.

Este último juego amistoso de México, antes de su enfrentamiento con Estados Unidos, ante la Selección Nacional de Argentina que no necesitaba introducción ni mucho menos recordar que se estaban

Centro Natural y de Educación de la AGFC celebra el Día de la Caza y la Pesca ¡Hola! Arkansas Little Rock, AR

El Día Nacional de la Caza y la Pesca es un divertido evento de orientación familiar. El Congreso formalizó la celebración anual del Día Nacional de la Caza y la Pesca hace 43 años y la Comisión de Caza y Pesca de Arkansas (AGFC, por sus siglas en inglés) celebrará también el día junto con el resto del país el sábado 26 de septiembre.

La AGFC estará celebrando el día en muchos de sus centros naturales y en los centros de educación de conservación en todo el estado.

En Arkansas central, las actividades se celebra-

rán de 10:00 a.m. a 2:00 p.m. en el Centro Natural de Arkansas Central Witt Stephens Jr. ubicado en el 602 President Clinton Avenue, en la zona del River Market.

“Esta celebración es una excelente forma de introducir a los jóvenes y a los recién llegados a los deportes al aire libre, mientras se les enseña la función importante que la caza y la pesca juegan en los programas de conservación de la fauna en Arkansas”, dijo Jill Gray, Especialista Administrativo del Centro

ABOUT HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
