Obama acknowledged during his brief remarks at La Paz that Latinos have a higher than average unemployment rate - the Latino unemployment rate is nearly 10 percent compared to a national average of just below eight percent - and said Chávez fought for farm workers even in the face of

adversity. He called the story of the movement “a story of determined, fearless, hopeful people who have been willing to devote their lives to making the country a little more just and a little more fair.” “Cesar Chavez gave a voice to poor and

Years ago, you weren’t likely to hear the words “breast cancer” outside of a doctor’s office or hospital. Most women didn’t think about it unless they had it. Treatment usually meant removing one or both breasts, an operation called a mastectomy. Nowadays, more people are talking about it, at home, on TV and even in church. That’s good, because breast cancer isn’t something to be ashamed of, and it’s not a death sentence, either. Today, most women who get it don’t have to have a mastectomy, and most go on to live a full life, especially if it’s treated early. And the best way to find breast cancer early is to get a mammogram. A mammogram is a kind

of picture that helps doctors see a tumor long before you or your doctor can feel it. That way, you have a much better chance of beating it and more options for treating it. Some women may not want to get a mammogram because they are afraid it will hurt or they feel embarrassed. But mammograms usually aren’t painful, and the health care workers who do them will try to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Some experts disagree on whether to start getting yearly mammograms at age 40 or age 50. You may want to talk to your doctor about when to start. If other members of your family have had breast cancer or you have other factors that make you more likely to have it, sooner may be better. But remember, most

women who get breast cancer have no history of it in their families. Anyone can get breast cancer at any age,

even men. (It’s pretty rare, but it happens. Most men do not need mammograms, but they should still get any lumps

checked out.) Medicaid, Medicare, and most private health insurance plans will pay for all or

part of the cost of a yearly mammogram. There is also a program called BreastCare that does free mammograms for some women who don’t have insurance and can’t pay the cost themselves. “If you think you don’t need a mammogram, think of all the people who need you,” said Julia Kettlewell, assistant vice president for quality programs at the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care. “To take care of them, you have to take care of yourself. It’s too important to let fear or embarrassment get in the way. Call your friend, mother, sister, daughter, aunt or any woman you feel comfortable with, and if possible, go together to get your mammograms. Make it a yearly tradition. It could save your life.”

Over 50 teams representing businesses, schools, community organizations, families, neighborhoods and churches have formed to participate in the Walk, and teams are still forming. At 3:00 p.m., there will be rally celebrating diversity. At 4:00 p.m., walkers will embark on the one-mile, fully accessible Walk route. Adults can register for $20 until November 1, $25

from November 1 until the day of the event, when onsite registration will be $30; students (from kindergarten through college) can register for $10; and families can register for $50. All registered walkers will receive a t-shirt. Registration will also be available at the event starting at 3:00 p.m. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome, as are pets on leashes.
