NBC News New York, NY For many people, running is a way to keep in shape, empowering them to take control of their lives. But for Mexican immigrant Antonio Tizapa, who is running his first New York City Marathon, it has become a way to fight for justice and call attention to the story of his 21-year-old son, whose disappearance along with 42 other students has generated international headlines. “Iguala is the tip of the spear,” said Tizapa, referring to the disappearance of the 43 students on September 26, 2014. For Tizapa, the New York City Marathon is part of a long journey that began with his son Jorge Antonio Tizapa Legideño. “I hope everyone will have the pleasure of meeting him soon,” the father said, “he is able to make friends easily, even during arguments… because he radiates a positive energy”. Arkansas Tech celebra a hispanos beneficiarios de becas IME ¡Hola! Arkansas Russellville, AR
Arkansas Tech University reconoció a los estudiantes que han recibido becas IME y expresaron su agradecimiento a los que hicieron la asistencia financiera posible. Becas IME se otorgan competitivamente basadas en el rendimiento académico y necesidad financiera. Los solicitantes de las becas IME deben ser mexicanos o de origen mexicano para calificar, y no deben ser elegibles a ningún otro tipo de fondos de becas o ayuda financiera.
Una tercera parte de los fondos para las becas provino del Consulado de México en Little Rock. El resto de la financiación fue proporcionada por una donación a la Fundación Arkansas Tech por el Dr. Mildred Diane Gleason, profesor asociado de historia en Arkansas Tech. Representant es del Consulado de México en Little Rock, administradores y profesores de Arkansas Tech, el alcalde Randy Horton de Russellville y la alcalde Carolyn McGee de Dardanelle estaban entre los presentes para felicitar a los beneficiarios de las

Arkansas Tech celebrates IME Fellowship Hispanic recipients ¡Hola! Arkansas Russellville, AR Arkansas Tech University recognized students who have received IME Fellowship scholarships and express its appreciation to those who made the financial assistance possible. IME Fellowship scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic achievement and financial need. Applicants for the IME Fellowship must be Mexican or of Mexican origin to qualify, and they must not be eligible for any other type of scholarship funds or financial aid. One-third of the funding for the scholarships came from the Consulate of Mexico in Little Rock. The remainder of the funding was provided by a donation to the Arkansas Tech Foundation by Dr.

“Many of you know the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),” said David Manuel Preciado Juarez, head of post for the Consulate of Mexico in Little Rock. “The commerce has
given us good numbers, but NAFTA is not only commerce. It is education, culture and of course, human beings. That’s why the Mexican government tried to get a large budget for this kind of program. Según el Centro Pew Research, hay más de 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados en Estados Unidos En nueve Estados, se estima por lo menos que es el 40 por ciento de la población total de inmigrantes sin documentos. Arkansas ocupa el primer lugar en esa lista. Su rostro no se puede mostrar, no dijo su nombre. In Arkansas, undocumented workers make up 3 percent. He has a job as a handyman one struggle he has overcome. He said getting to his job is another battle. “When you see police, how do you feel?” reporter Ken Buffa asks him. “I’m scared because an officer can ask if you’re legal or call immigration to check see if you’re legal,” he responds. But I am going to have to work on the carpeting in here,” he said. Sitting in his new office, Ryan said House Republicans need to start fresh by focusing on ideas. “We have to be the alternative party,” he said. “If we don’t like what’s going on, we owe it to the people of this nation, to our constituents a bold, specific and clear agenda, a vision, for how we would do things differently.”

It has been difficult to be a Chivas fan or player in recent times. It has not just been the lack of trophies, but the race slowly to the bottom and into the mess of relegation. Fans have put up with jokes from their rivals and have often been angry at the state of the club. But in the midst of what has been a dark past few years, piqued with regular changes of coach, sporting directors and structure, it appears owner Jorge Vergara has struck gold with Argentine coach Matias Almeyda. Chivas played the Copa MX final like a grande (big club), taking it to a strong
Leon team and attempting to force the game. Leon replied in kind, creating a game worthy of being called a final. In the end, it was a deserved victory for Chivas, even if Leon’s fans were heartbroken when first Carlos “Gullit” Pena and then Luis “Chapo” Montes came agonizingly close to equalizing in second-half injury time. The celebrations of the players were wild. Vergara broke down in a TV interview, and back in Guadalajara. It was a welcome reminder of what Chivas, one of Mexico’s ‘big two’ clubs and who have a policy of playing only Mexican players, still can be. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently resolved a case involving two potato companies in Monte Vista, Colorado, alleging that at least 13 women, mostly Latinas working in low-wage jobs, were subjected to verbal sexual harassment and unwelcome physical contact. Three were fired for refusing to submit to the harassment. This case and others prosecuted by EEOC to combat
the sexual harassment of women, including minorities and immigrants, provides a glimpse into the difficult reality encountered by many low-wage Latino workers and a powerful counterpoint to the increasingly disparaging rhetoric about immigration in our country. EEOC is responsible for enforcing the federal anti-discrimination laws prohibiting workplace discrimination based on race, sex, national origin, religion, age, disability, and genetic information. With this charge, it is not
surprising that as the social and political issues of the day invariably make their way into our workplaces, they similarly make their way into EEOC’s efforts to stop existing discrimination and to educate workers and employers alike about their rights and responsibilities under the law. In some instances, employers, such as the two potato companies, agree to amicably resolve the matter by providing monetary relief to the individuals who have been discriminated against
as well as changing existing policies and practices to safeguard employees from future harassment. It is imperative that companies are held accountable when such illegal and morally reprehensible conduct occurs in the workplace. That is why discrimination against immigrant and other vulnerable workers is a top enforcement priority for EEOC. EEOC’s work in this area illustrates, often painfully, that while immigration is part of this country’s dynamic historical narrative, recent
immigrants often work in the shadows of our economy, live in fear, and are extremely vulnerable to discrimination. Just as important, EEOC has secured strong non-monetary remedies to discrimination, remedies that deter future violations by employers and result in positive changes in the working conditions for thousands of workers across the country. The voices of the courageous women in the Colorado case and others underscore the disturbing reality often drowned out by anti-immi-
grant rhetoric that paints immigrants in an unfavorable light and dismisses the contributions of immigrant workers. With fear often comes silence, and with silence comes a heightened vulnerability to horrendous sexual harassment as well as other illegal forms of discrimination and exploitation. --P. Resource guide helps undocumented students achieve their dreams Karen Vanegas Washington, D.C. U.S. Department of Education released a resource guide to support undocumented students in high school and college. The guide aims, “to ensure that all students have access to a world-class education that prepares them for college and careers.” The effort will help individuals and organizations invested in education better support undocumented youth, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arri-
vals (DACA) recipients. The guide’s objectives include: helping educators and school staff support undocumented students academically, debunking misconceptions and clarifying undocumented students’ legal rights, sharing information about financial aid options, and supporting youth to apply for DACA consideration or renewal. Resources like those listed in the guide were critical for me. As an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland and the first intern at the White House Initiative
on Educational Excellence for Hispanics who was a DACA recipient, I have been directly impacted by the resources and tools provided by the Obama administration which help improve the educational trajectory of undocumented students. As a DACA recipient, I was able to apply for and obtain a Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarship and become a Frank Karel Fellow in Public Interest Communications. For undocumented youth in the U.S., the future can feel uncertain. Yet it is deeply
significant and helpful that schools continue to welcome all students regardless of status, educators and counselors remain trustworthy and understanding of the sensitivity around this critical issue, and students have access to resources that support their attainment of a higher education, including financial aid options. Absent of true immigration reform, and as I work towards helping ensure a brighter future for more Latinos, including undocumented youth and DACA recipients, I will continue to share my
story with the hope that more students will come out of the shadows and apply for DACA. Since 2012, more than 680,000 young people who were brought to the United States as children have received DACA. The majority of these applicants are of Hispanic origin. Research indicates that about 1.5 million undocumented youth in the U.S. are currently eligible for DACA and that 400,000 more young people will be eligible in coming years. The new Resource Guide is an invaluable tool for educators who are dedicated
to supporting the educational attainment and success of all their students, including those who are undocumented. For me, receiving DACA was a life-changer, allowing me to reach my full potential.
