LITTLE ROCK, AR - El Departamento de Educación Superior de Arkansas (ADHE) ha notificado a 4.265 nuevos beneficiarios a través de correo electrónico de sus Becas de Desafío Académico (Academic Challenge Scholarships) para la primavera de 2011, por un valor de $ 9.25 millones en fondos a través de la Lotería de Becas Arkansas y el ADHE. “Estamos muy contentos de poder otorgar 522 becas a estudiantes en la Categoría de Triunfador y 3743 becas de categoría de no tradicionales”, dijo Jim Purcell, Ed.D., director de ADHE. LITTLE ROCK, AR- The Arkansas Department of Higher Education notified 4,265 new recipients via email of their Academic Challenge Scholarship awards for the spring 2011 term, amounting to $9.25 million in funds through the Arkansas

Scholarship Lottery and ADHE. “We are pleased to be able to award 522 additional Current Achiever category students and 3,743 nontraditional category scholarships,” said Jim Purcell, Ed.D., director of ADHE. Of that number, some are expected to decline the scholarship, officials said, which

will make those funds available to students on the waiting list. All funding has been exhausted, leaving 3,248 qualified nontraditional students enrolled at four-year universities in Arkansas without the Academic Challenge Scholarship. Final tally of the fall 2010 Academic Challenge Scholarship

recipients numbered 30,575 students at two-year and fouryear universities across the state. Those students who completed eligibility requirements in the fall will continue to receive scholarship funding in the spring. Final notification to spring applicants regarding awards will

Arkansas is poised to recover more quickly than many other states in the country. While 46 other states will struggle with large budget gaps in this fiscal year, Arkansas is one of only four states that will have a stable and balanced budget. And though too many Arkansans still are looking for work, our unemployment rate has remained below the national average. Recently, the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that Arkansas’s personal income rose in the third quarter of 2010, ranking our state 10th the in the nation for personal income growth. Our conservative budgeting, strategic and targeted budget cuts and our disciplined use of federal stimulus dollars have enabled Arkansas to move forward despite historically tough economic times. While other states have been forced to lay off teachers and cut educational programs, Arkansas has continued our commitment to excellence in education. Arkansas has been recognized nationally for the quality and accessibility of our pre-k education programs, sharing top honors with only two other states in this category. At the high-school level, Arkansas students also led the nation this year in improved Advanced Placement test scores in math, science and English. In 2010, Arkansas simplified and improved the process by which students apply for financial aid. The year 2010 also saw the first distribution of Arkansas Lottery scholarships, which helped more than 20,000 students pay for college. Our improvements at all levels in our educational system this year will have a long-term impact on our future workforce, as well as on our ability to attract new industry to the State. who has overseen the 2010 Census as Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, echoed Locke. “The 2010 Census was a massive undertaking, and

in reporting these first results, we renew our commitment to our great American democracy peacefully, fairly and openly for the 23rd time in our nation’s history.” The U.S. resident population represents the total number of people in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The most populous state

was California (37,253,956); the least populous, Wyoming (563,626). The state that gained the most numerically since the 2000 Census was Texas (up 4,293,741 to 25,145,561) and the state that gained the most as a percentage of its 2000 Census count was Nevada (up 35.1% to 2,700,551). Regionally, the South and the West picked up the bulk of the population increase, 14,318,924 and 8,747,621, respectively. But the Northeast and the Midwest also grew: 1,722,862 and 2,534,225. Additionally, Puerto Rico’s resident population was 3,725,789, a 2.2 percent decrease over the number counted a decade earlier. Just before today’s announcement, Locke delivered the apportionment counts to

President Obama, 10 days before the statutory deadline of Dec. 31. The apportionment totals were calculated by a congressionally defined formula, in accordance with Title 2 of the U.S. Code, to divide among the states the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The populations of the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are excluded from the apportionment population, as they do not have voting seats in Congress. “The decennial count has been the basis for our representative form of government since 1790,” Groves said. “At that time, each member of the House represented about 34,000 residents. Since then, the House has more than quadrupled in size, with each member now representing about 21 times as many constituents.” President Obama will

transmit the apportionment counts to the 112th Congress during the first week of its first regular session in January. The reapportioned Congress will be the 113th, which convenes in January 2013. Beginning in February and wrapping up by March 31, 2011, the Census Bureau will release demographic data to the states on a rolling basis so state governments can start the redistricting process. Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution calls for a census of the nation’s population every 10 years to apportion the House seats among the states. Every school year parents and students miss days for medical reasons. Rather it is an appointment or your child is sick,

every parent strives to keep his or her child in school as much as possible. Your school district and officials will agree that prevention is the key to having a healthy child. Giving your

child vitamins and maintaining a good diet helps to strengthen their immune system. With a strong immune system your child can better fight off viruses and bacteria. Getting your child

yearly medical evaluation and semi-annual dental evaluations helps them spend more time in schoolroom and less time in the doctor’s room. It is ideal to schedule your child a dental visit during the summer months. During this evaluation they will receive a cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatment (vitamins), and an oral examination. The cleaning will allow your dentist to remove plaque (build-up) the toothbrush may have missed. Sometimes despite our best efforts plaque manages to get under the gums. Left untreated this plaque can cause gingivitis (gum disease). Therefore it is important to get your child’s teeth checked every six months for plaque build-up. The examination identifies any problems or issues the dentist or parent(s) is concern about. During this examination your dentist will look for cavities, crowding of the teeth, jaw development, habits like finger sucking and mouth-breathing. X-

rays of your child mouth will aid the dentist in identifying these problems. X-rays are a type of picture of the teeth and mouth. X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, just like visible light. They are of higher energy and can go through the body to form an image on film. On these films your dentist can see cavities between your child’s teeth, permanent teeth which have not erupted, and the jawbone development. Fluoride treatment is very necessary in preventative treatment. Fluoride is a substance that strengthens tooth enamel and helps to prevent dental cavities. Fluoride usually occurs naturally

in drinking water however, certain counties water are fluoridated. A fluoride application helps greatly in places with a low level of fluoride in the water. Fluoride is also very good because children do not drink as much water as they do other liquids. Because of this, even if the water is fluoridated, your child may still miss it due of minimal water consumption. Your dentist may also suggest sealants as a part of preventive dentistry. Sealants are a plastic resin used in dentistry to coat the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. This coating will help your child prevent future cavities on the molars (back teeth). Sealants are normally very inexpensive and covered under most insurances including Medicaid. WASHINGTON, DC - El mapa del Congreso continuó cambiando hacia los estados denominado “rojos”, según nuevos datos de distribución dados a conocer por la Oficina del Censo de los EE.UU. Las cifras de la Oficina del Censo reestructuró el número de escaños en el Congreso para 18 estados, en base a los incrementos y descensos de población en la última década. La mayoría de los estados que incrementaron sus escaños votaron por el senador John McCain (R-AZ.) en las elecciones presidenciales de 2008, mientras que el presidente Obama resultó ganador en casi todos los estados que disminuyeron sus escaños. WASHINGTON, DC - The congressional map continued to shift toward red states, as the U.S. Census Bureau released new apportionment data. The census numbers reshuffled the number of seats in Congress for 18 states, based on population gains and losses over the past decade. Most states gaining seats went for

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ.) in the 2008 presidential election, while President Obama won almost all states that lost seats. But just because a district is moving into a red state doesn’t mean it will be Republican, or that a district lost by a blue state will come at the expense of Democrats. Many states where the GOP will draw the lines

already feature heavily GOP congressional delegations so Republicans will be hard pressed to add friendly districts or may just want to focus on shoring up the members that they currently have. The westward movement of the U.S. population means six districts in states that went for Obama will shift to states that went for McCain in the past presidential election. A

small but significant shift that could help a GOP presidential candidate in 2012, provided they can hold those states for the party. Most of the other new seats will be in swing states that went for Obama, which could also be won by Republicans in 2012. Texas, as expected, gained the most seats, moving from 32 to 36 seats thanks to big gains in population, primarily in the Hispanic community. Florida was the only other state to gain multiple seats, adding two and bringing it to 27 seats, another state with a high index of Hispanic population. Six other states gained a single seat: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah

and Washington. Every state with a gain has one thing in common: a large Hispanic population. The biggest losers were New York and Ohio, which each lost two seats. Eight other states lost a single seat: Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. McCain won five of the eight states that are gaining seats in the 2008 presidential race. Eight of the 10 that are losing seats went to Obama. Minnesota just made the cut for the last seat (No. 435), and will keep all eight of its districts, while North Carolina fell about 15,000 people short of gaining a 14th seat.

Republicans, whose 2010 gains make them dominant in the upcoming round of drawing new district lines, will control the redistricting process in eight of the states mentioned above, while Democrats control it in just two. That’s important, because states that lose or gain seats generally see the biggest changes. The census announcement kicks off the decennial linedrawing process. Four key states -- Georgia, Illinois, Indiana and Texas – are drawing new lines. NETWORK Recognizing you’re not the only one looking for a job is essential to finding one you really want. Recruiters’ inboxes are overflowing with the resumes of potential applicants, so you need an edge. Where most job seekers find the most success is

through word-of-mouth. Family, friends, former co-workers or anyone else you have regular contact with outside of your current office can all be great sources of information when looking for a job. GET ORGANIZED Keep track of your jobsearching efforts. Finding a job can be a drawn out process, as recruiters typically must sift through large applicant pools before setting up any interviews. Keep a separate file on all jobs you’ve applied to, complete with a job description and copy of the cover letter and resume you sent to that particular job. Keep these files easily accessible and organized, as you never know when you might be contacted by a prospective employer. KNOW YOUR SKILLS Examine your strengths and work on communicating those strengths. Effectively explaining what you do best is your best chance of landing that dream job, so practice illustrating how your skills apply to each position you’re seeking and
