Programa de Conducción de Camiones para Emplear a Residentes de Arkansas
El Departamento de Servicios Laborales de Arkansas (DWS por sus siglas en inglés) se complace en anunciar la reanudación de la Iniciativa Piloto de Entrenamiento de Conductores de Camiones. El DWS se ha asociado con la Universidad Estatal de Arkansas - Newport y la Asociación de Camioneros de Arkansas para ofrecer el programa. The Arkansas Department of Workforce Services is pleased to announce the resumption of the Truck Driver Training Pilot Initiative. DWS is partnering with Arkansas State University – Newport and the Arkansas Trucking Association to offer the program. All tuition and related training expenses are forgiven if the applicant completes a four-week training course at the Commercial Driver Training Institute at Arkansas State University – Newport and remains on the job for at least one year. Four Arkansas companies, Maverick USA, Stallion Transportation Group, Tyson Foods and Willis Shaw Express, expect to hire up to 300 graduates at wages exceeding $35,000 the first year. The job training program was suspended in late 2009 due to the recession and the economic downturn. But the transportation industry is now experiencing a shortage of qualified truck drivers, which necessitated the resumption of the program. “The state of Arkansas is bringing back an important program to train people who are willing to work for a rewarding career as a professional truck driver,” Gov. “Llegué hasta el 11vo año escolar, vi a mi alrededor y me di cuenta que los estudiantes estaban preparándose para ir a alguna parte. No tenía ni idea de para qué se estaban preparando. Entraban y salían de la oficina del asesor escolar de la escuela y subían y bajaban por los corredores, hablando con maestros y amigos sobre su preparación”. Ésta es una cita de un joven llamado Jonathan Sánchez. Hoy es estudiante universitario siendo el primero en su familia en asistir a la universidad.Pero a los 16 años no tenía ni idea de que debía estar preparándose para la siguiente fase de su vida.
“I got all the way to the 11th grade and looked around and noticed that students were getting ready to go somewhere. I had no idea what they were getting ready to do. They were rushing in out of the school counseling office and up and down the hallways, talking to teachers and friends about getting ready.” This is a quote from a young man named Jonathan Sanchez. Today he is a first-generation college student. But when he was 16 years old, he had no idea that he needed to be preparing for the next phase of life. At the time, Jonathan was in the same position as many other young Americans. He had a career goal that required a college degree. His parents wanted him to have every opportunity to succeed. Yet he was unfamiliar with the path to college admission, including what precollege tests and high school courses he needed to take and how to save for college. And since he was already a junior, he needed to learn fast. That’s why it’s important for students like Jonathan to begin their college journey as early as possible — practically at birth — and continue through elementary, middle and high school. In elementary school, it is essential that students like Jonathan are involved in activities that connect to their academic interests and nurture their talents. Some elementary schools offer music, art or athletic programs, and students should take advantage of every resource at their disposal. In middle school, they should explore and deepen college and career knowledge by participating in career fairs and visiting college campuses. Finally, when students enter high school, they should enroll in the most challenging English, social studies, math and science classes to ensure a wide range of college and career options. En ese entonces, Jonathan estaba en la misma posición que muchos otros jóvenes en este país. Tenía una meta para su vida que le exigía un título universitario. Sus padres querían que tuviera todas las oportunidades de tener éxito. School counselors, teachers, parents and other family members can help their students develop a plan that will carry them from high school to college and beyond. Once the plan is created, parents can monitor progress by ensuring that the students have taken a college admission test like the SAT®, visited college campuses as well as searched for scholarships and grants and completed the Free

Aunque se dice oficialmente que el país está en recesión y no se ha hecho el anuncio formal (aunque todo parece indicarlo), toda persona prudente toma precauciones para salir airosa de un período en el cual la economía y el mercado laboral pueden ser tumultuosos. Aunque ninguna profesión ni oficio es absolutamente inmune a las fluctuaciones económicas, hay algunos que pueden enfrentar los altibajos mejor que otros. While the official word that the country is in a recession has not been formally announced (even though signs certainly point to it), it is the wise person who takes precautions to ride out a period of time where the economy and the job market may be tumultuous. Even though no career path is absolutely immune to economic fluctuations, there are those that can weather the ups and downs much better than others. Rather than find yourself on the unemployment line the next time government officials take to the airwaves with poor economic news, it could pay to get into a career that’s a bit more secure for the long haul. As people grow older the demand for quality healthcare and the medications that keep them healthy will be needed. Think about a job as a physician’s assistant. Managed care companies look favorably on physician’s assistants (PAs) because they earn less than doctors, but still offer the same general care. • Federal jobs: Few federal employees are let go, even during a recession. Government jobs generally lose employees only when employees leave and are not replaced. Federal jobs often feature steady periodic pay increases and good benefits, which make them attractive options for individuals looking for stability. • Computers: It pays to know the inner workings of computers and be able to program software or manage databases. Complex systems that require distinct skills will not fall out of favor. • Environmental industries: The green movement isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, say experts. Now may be the time to jump on board in the environmental job of your choice. • Financial planning: Aging Baby Boomers need advice on how to propagate their nest eggs, securing the jobs of financial planners. Additionally, folks in general are looking for ways to stretch the dollars they do have a bit further.
