El nuevo papa, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, de 76 años, se llama Francisco, el pontífice 266a de la Iglesia Católica Romana. Él es también el primer papa que no es europeo en más de 1.200 años y el primer miembro de la Orden Jesuita.

VATICAN CITY - With a puff of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and to the cheers of thousands of rain-soaked faithful, a gathering of Catholic cardinals picked a new pope from among their midst on Wednesday, choosing the cardinal from Argentina, the first South American to lead the church.

The new pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (pronounced Ber-GOAL-io), 76, will be called Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

He is also the first non-European pope in more than 1,200 years and the first member of the Jesuit order to lead the church.

A diferencia de otros pontífices recientes, Juan Pablo II, Benedicto XVI, el Papa Francisco no tiene un número romano después de su nombre. Eso es porque él es el primero en tomar el nombre de Francisco. El nuevo Papa quiso honrar a San Francisco de Asís, un admirador de la naturaleza y un siervo de los pobres e indigentes.

En la elección del Papa Francisco, los cardenales enviaron un poderoso mensaje de que el futuro de la iglesia se encuentra en Sur America, donde viven la mayor parte de los católicos del mundo.

De inmediato el Papa Francisco mostró la diferencia de su predecesor Benedicto, un teólogo distante, con un gesto de humildad, pidiendo a la multitud que esperaba que lo bendijera antes de bendecirlos.

“Oren por mí”, instó al nuevo pontífice, vestido con las vestiduras blancas de un papa, por primera vez, una multitud de decenas de miles de personas que esperaban en

From the Vatican to Buenos Aires, Catholics worldwide rejoiced when Cardinal Bergoglio became the new pope to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

Unlike other recent pontiffs, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Pope Francis doesn’t have a numeral after his name.

That’s because he’s the first to take the name Francis. The new pope wanted to honor St. Francis of Assisi, an admirer of nature and a servant to the

poor and destitute.

In choosing Pope Francis, the cardinals sent a powerful message that the future of the church lies in the global south, home to the bulk of the world’s Catholics.

He immediately showed the difference from his predecessor Benedict, an aloof theologian, with a gesture of humility, asking the waiting crowd to bless him before he blessed them.

“Pray for me,” the new pontiff, dressed in the white robes of a pope for the first

time, urged a crowd of tens of thousands of people waiting in the square below. Speaking in Italian as he blessed the faithful, Francis asked the audience.

“I would like to thank you for your embrace,” the new pope, dressed in white, said from the white balcony on St. Peter’s Basilica as thousands cheered joyously below. “My brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am.”

“It was like waiting for the birth of a baby, only better,” said a Roman man, Giuliano Uncini. A child sitting atop his father’s shoulders waved a crucifix.

“Good night, and have a good rest,” he concluded, in a grandfatherly, almost casual tone.

Pope Francis shunned the papal limousine after his appearance on the balcony and chose to take a shuttle bus with

other cardinals back to the Vatican residence where they are staying, for an evening meal.

Francis is known as a humble man who spoke out for the poor and led an austere life in Buenos Aires. He was born to Italian immigrant parents and was raised in the Argentine capital.

The new pope inherits a church wrestling with an array of challenges that intensified during his predecessor, Benedict XVI, including a shortage of priests, growing competition from evangeli-

cal churches in the Southern Hemisphere, a sexual abuse crisis that has undermined the church’s moral authority in the West and difficulties governing the Vatican itself.

Benedict abruptly ended his troubled eight-year papacy last month, announcing he was no longer up to the rigors of the job. He became the first pontiff in 598 years to resign.

The 115 cardinals who are younger than 80 and eligible to vote chose their new leader after two days of voting.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires beginning in 1998 and a cardinal since 2001, he frequently tangled with Argentina’s governments over social issues. In 2010, for example, he castigated a government-supported law to legalize marriage and adoption by same-sex couples as “a war against God.” He has been less energetic, however, in urging the Argentine church to examine its own behavior during the 1970s. Before beginning the voting by secret ballot in the Sistine Chapel on Tuesday, in a cloistered meeting known as a conclave, the cardinals swore an oath of secrecy in Latin, a rite designed to protect deliberations from outside scrutiny, and to protect cardinals from earthly influence as they seek divine guidance.

The conclave followed more than a week of intense, broader discussions among the world’s cardinals about the problems facing the church and their criteria for its next leader.

“We spoke among ourselves in an exceptional and free way, with great truth, about the lights but also about shadows in the current situation of the Catholic Church,” Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna, a theologian known for his intellect and his pastoral touch, told reporters this week.

“The pope’s election is something substantially different from a political election,” Cardinal Schönborn said, adding that the role was not “the chief executive of a multinational company, but the spiritual head of a community of believers.”

Indeed, Benedict was selected in 2005 as a caretaker after the momentous papacy of John Paul II, but the shy theologian appeared to show little inclination toward management. His papacy suffered from crises of communications with Muslims, Jews and Anglicans that, along with a sex abuse crisis that raged back to life in Europe in 2010, evolved into a crisis of governance.

Four years later, another attempt failed after Governor Mike Beebe, a Democrat, said the measure could violate federal law.

LITTLE ROCK, AR Make plans to join the family fun at both the Clinton Presidential Center and Burns park in North Little Rock for their 2013 Easter Family celebrations.

The Clinton Presidential Center will host the Easter Family Festival on Saturday, March 23 and Burns Park will have its hunt a week later on Saturday, March 30.

Both are free family events, filled with Easter Bunny activities, games and prices.

The Clinton Presidential center will kick off with the arrival of the Easter Bunny on a fire truck, and the Easter egg hunt on the grounds of the Clinton Presidential Center.

The outdoor festival with food, craft activities, a petting zoo,

pony rides and entertainment will follow the egg hunt for children of all ages.

“Each year on the day after Easter, the White House sponsors an Easter egg roll. In honor of the tradition we will hold the same event. Children will shuttle Easter eggs down a lane using only a wooden spoon!’ said Lena Moore, Deputy Executive Director of the Clinton Foundation.

The Easter Family Festival begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 2:00 p.m. The Easter eggs hunt for children ages 1-5 will begin at 10:00 a.m. and for children ages 6-11 at 12:30 p.m.

LITTLE ROCK, AR Un nueva biblioteca infantil de $12 millones se inaugurará este fin de semana en Little Rock. La instalación de 30,000 pies cuadrados, incluye un laboratorio de com-

putación, invernadero, cocina de enseñanza y teatro junto con una colección de más de 21.000 libros, DVDs y CDs. En el teatro de 165 asientos, los niños podrán experimentar todos los aspectos del teatro. El sistema de sonido iluminación y pantallas de

LITTLE ROCK, AR - La Procuraduría General de Arkansas asistió a más de 7,400 consumidores con quejas el año pasado, devolviéndoles más de $1.7 millones como resultado del proceso de mediación informal y los esfuerzos de resolución de disputas de la oficina.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Attorney General’s Office assisted more than 7,400 consumers with their consumer complaints last year, returning more than $1.7 million to them as a result of the office’s informal mediation and dispute resolution efforts.

Concerned Ar-

kansas consumers contacted the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division for help in handling legitimate business disputes, and sometimes, to report scams and suspected fraud. Investigators with the Consumer Protection Division aid each consumer that files a complaint in attempting to resolve the complaint.

In conjunction with National Consumer Protection Week, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel issued this Consumer Alert to announce the 10 most common types of complaints fielded by his office last year.

“Our Consumer Protection Division interacts

with and assists hundreds of Arkansas consumers daily, and those consumers have concerns that deserve our attention and assistance,” McDaniel said. “Whether they visit GotYourBackArkansas.org or call us directly, we want consumers to know that we will investigate improper activity and help try to positively resolve their concerns.”

McDaniel said that he hoped consumers would take advantage of the tips and resources available at GotYourBackArkansas.org in advance of any consumer transaction. There is information available to address each of the top 10 categories of

complaints.

The top 10 most common complaints from last year, by category, were: Automobile sales, service, financing, and repairs; Debt collection; Payday lending; Home improvement, repair and construction; Landline and wireless telephone services; Mortgages, foreclosures and home financing; Health care; Credit and credit repair services; Appliances, furnishings and electronics; Cable TV and satellite services Debt collection also always ranks among the top complaints, with consumers reporting harassing tactics, attempts to collect old, time-

barred debt or problems with collectors misidentifying the party from whom they are seeking money.

As to the third most common complaint, McDaniel continues his efforts to stop illegal payday lending in Arkansas. Though storefront payday lenders have exited the state as a result of the Attorney General’s efforts, some online lenders still actively court Arkansas consumers.
