El Cinco de Mayo, festividad regional mexicana, tiene actualmente un mayor significado en los Estados Unidos, donde es celebrada por los estadounidenses de origen mexicano, y es similar a las celebraciones nacionales del Día de San Patricio, y del Año Nuevo Chino.

on May 5, 1862. Heavily indebted to France by the 1860s after gaining its independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico found itself fighting a French army that was intent on empire expansion, using Mexico’s debt to the French government as justification for invasion.

Upon realizing the intentions of the French, both Spain and England withdrew their support.

Although President Abraham Lincoln expressed America’s sympathy for the Mexican cause, he was unable to offer any more than that, as his country was busy fighting its own civil war at the time.

As a result, Mexico was forced to defend itself against a well outfitted French army.

A poorly armed and heavily outnumbered militia, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, managed to defeat the French at Puebla, stopping the French invasion of Mexico in so doing.

A regional holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo actually bears more significance in the United States, where it is celebrated by Americans of Mexican ancestry, and is similar to the American celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day and the Chinese New Year.

Huerta co-founded with Cesar Chavez the United Farm Workers of America in 1962.

As political director of the UFW, Huerta was influential in securing the passage of the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Huerta. “It affirms

the importance of organizing to maintain a democratic society, be it for workers, women, the community, or immigrants.

Organized communities guarantee civic engagement, which creates the path for a just, fair and peaceful society. Bringing our organized movements together can ensure the majority of

Americans the ability fully to achieve the American dream.”

Huerta was instrumental in the passage of California’s Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975 and disability insurance for that state’s farmworkers.

In 2002, Huerta founded the Dolores Huerta Foundation with a mission of developing community

organizers and national leaders, the White House said.

In 1998, Huerta was awarded the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights by President Bill Clinton.

Cesar Chávez was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom by president Bill Clinton on Sept. 8, 1994.

You can break the problem of

childhood obesity down into simple math: When kids eat too many calories and don’t get enough exercise, they are at risk for becoming obese.

Childhood obesity is a growing problem in America, and the risks are severe. Obese children are at risk for:

• High blood pressure and high cholesterol • Type 2 diabetes • Breathing problems like sleep apnea and asthma • Joint problems • Digestive problems • Social and emotional problems • Low self-esteem Eating well isn’t always easy, but it’s best for kids to eat lots of different kinds of vegetables and whole grains, as well as fruits and proteins (meats, beans and nuts). Try low-fat milk and dairy products. A good guide for healthy eating can be found at ChooseMyPlate.gov.

Fruits and vegetables are all good for you, but try to eat lots

of different colors and different types. Different types and colors help meet different needs in your body. A few examples: broccoli, carrots, corn, dry beans, celery and mushrooms. Whole grains are better for you than refined grains like white bread and sugar-coated cereals. Try brown rice; oatmeal; popcorn; whole cornmeal; whole wheat cereal; whole wheat flour; and wild rice.

For protein, choose lean cuts of meat and poultry; dry beans and peas; fish; nuts and seeds; soy beans (tofu, hummus, soy or bean burger patties); and eggs.

Peanut butter is a good protein, but most brands contain sugar so don’t eat too much.

Low-fat milk is a great way to get your dairy, but not the only way. Try yogurt and low-fat cheese, yogurt, and even treats like frozen yogurt, ice cream or pudding (in small amounts). Kids should also be active for at least an hour a day. One easy way for parents to help kids do this is to limit time spent on television, video games, computers and phones. Encourage kids to play outside in a safe area. It also helps if parents join the fun.

Run, jump, dance and play with your kids. You’ll have fun, spend some time together and help your kids build healthy habits for life. It can make the childparent relationship better and is healthy for everyone.

Pregúntenle a una madre lo que ella recuerda acerca de la lactancia a su bebé y escuchará algo como, “¡me hizo sentir realmente cerca de mi bebé!” Ella podría agregar indicándole que su bebé casi nunca se enfermó y que la lactancia materna le ahorró a la familia mucho dinero.

Es su sonrisa mientras habla lo que le señala lo orgullosa que se siente la madre sobre el maravillo e increíble vínculo que ella recordará el resto de su vida.

La lactancia materna es la forma normal y natural de alimentar a su bebé. La leche materna cambia de acuerdo a

las necesidades de su propio bebé. En los primeros días de vida, una madre produce leche en pequeñas cantidades que contiene poderosos nutrientes. Es la cantidad justa para el pequeño estómago del recién nacido. A medida que el bebé crece, también lo hace su estómago. Entonces, la cantidad de leche que la madre produce aumenta para satisfacer las necesidades del bebé. Cuando las madres y los bebés están expuestos a los gérmenes, el cuerpo de la madre va a producir anticuerpos que pasan a través de la leche para ayudar a proteger a su bebé de las enfermedades.

Ask a mother what she remembers about breastfeeding her baby and you will hear something like, “It made me feel really close to my baby!”

She might go on to tell you that her baby was hardly ever sick and that breastfeeding saved the family a lot of money. It is her smile as she talks that tells you

how proud the mother feels about the incredible, amazing bond that she will remember the rest of her life.

Breastfeeding is the normal, natural way to feed your baby. A mother’s milk changes according to her own baby’s needs. In the first few days of life, a mother makes milk in small amounts that are full of powerful nutrients. It is just the right amount for the

newborn baby’s tiny stomach.

As the baby grows, so does his stomach. Then the amount of milk the mother produces increases to match the baby’s needs. When mothers and babies are exposed to germs, the mother’s body will make antibodies that pass through her milk to help protect her baby from sickness.

Mother’s milk continues to protect her child even as he grows

into an adult. People who were not breastfed as infants are more likely to have health problems like diabetes and obesity.

The mother does something good for herself when she breastfeeds. When her body makes milk to feed her child as nature intended, she is less likely to get breast and ovarian cancer in her life.

Historically, pediatric dentists and pediatricians have encouraged parents to get their child’s first dental examination at age two. This kind of thinking is an idea of the past. As recent as 2006, children’s health communities have changed their approach to dental healthcare.

This change is mainly owed to of the ADA (American Dental Association), AAP (American Academy of Pediatricians), and AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry), recommending toddlers have their first dental examination no later than age one. The AAPD encourages parents to establish a “Dental Home” at an early age because preventive care is essential to a healthy mouth. The establishment of a dental home begins before the child’s first

birthday, usually when the first tooth erupts (around 6 months).

A parent who establishes an early “Dental Home” provides several benefits for their child. Early care gives your child the opportunity to for the highest quality of care.

Your child becomes familiar with the dental environment and the dentist becomes familiar with your child’s dental needs. When a child’s first dental experience goes well, the child is more apt to be comfortable with the dentist, and less likely to be anxious about future dental appointments. The first dental check-up allows the dentist examine the teeth for dental caries. Your child’s necessary preventative visit, will allow the dentist to catch future dental problems before they become emergencies.

Identifying problems through

your “Dental Home” is more effective and less costly in Comparison to emergency care facilities or hospital.

Most private insurances and government funded insurances pay for routine care. Those not covered, under private or government insurance, still pay lower rates for routine evaluations and treatment caught in the early stages. A parent or guardian who waits until a child is having a problem to get dental care may accrue high dental bills and co-pays.

Early preventive care launches good relationships between your dentist and your child. In the event a “Dental Home” has not been established for your child, an evaluation should be set up before entering Pre-School. More state pre-schools are requiring dental evaluations for entering

vegetables are an essential element to a healthy diet and can be enjoyed throughout the day. And when it comes to fruits and vegetables, the brighter the better. Brighter, deeper colored fruits and vegetables typically have a high concentration of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

• Don’t just go green.

Fruits and vegetables come in many different colors, and those colors each provide their own distinct nutritional value. Many vegetables are green, and greens provide a host of vitamins and minerals.

Greens are often loaded with calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc as well

as vitamins A, C, E, and K. Sweet vegetables, including corn, carrots and beets, might not be as eye-catching as their greener counterparts, but these also provide a good source for vitamins and minerals while adding some sweetness to a diet as well.

Colorful fruits also provide a host of nutritional value, including vitamins, fiber and antioxidants.

• Include more whole grains. Whole grains can not only help combat existing conditions like high cholesterol, but they can also protect men and women from a host of other issues. Those issues include cardiovascular disease,

stroke and even some cancers.

What’s more, because they’re high in fiber, whole grains make men and women feel more full without eating as much, which can help discourage overeating.

Easy ways to include more whole grains in your daily diet include replacing white bread with whole grain bread, trading refined pastas for whole wheat alternatives and passing on white rice in favor of brown rice.

• Don’t abandon snacks.

Quitting snacks cold turkey will likely result in overeating. And snacks aren’t the problem; it’s what men and women choose to snack on that’s the true culprit.

El programa WIC de Arkansas (Programa Especial de Nutrición Suplementaria para Mujeres, Infantes y Niños) puede ayudar a una madre a superar esas barreras. WIC apoya a las madres lactantes para que puedan tener éxito y crear buenos recuerdos de la época en que dieron de lactar.

Una forma en que WIC ayuda a las madres a tener éxito con la lactancia materna es con las Consejeras de Lactancia de Madre a Madre WIC. Estas Consejeras de Lactancia son mujeres que han amamantado y han formado parte del programa WIC. Ellas hablan con las mujeres embarazadas sobre

Most mothers have heard that breastfeeding is better for their babies. They may also have heard that breastfeeding is hard to learn or it hurts. Some mothers may feel that they will be embarrassed to breastfeed their baby in front of other people. All mothers have some concerns when they start thinking about breastfeeding. However, breastfeeding is just like learning to walk. It takes a little time to learn to breastfeed just as it takes time for a child to learn to walk. Mothers who stick with breastfeeding soon find it gets much easier! They will also learn that breastfeeding should never be painful.

Most mothers face barriers when they choose to breastfeed.

The Arkansas WIC (The Special

Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) Program can help a mother get past those barriers. WIC supports breastfeeding mothers so that they will be successful and have good memories of when they breastfed.

One way WIC helps mothers succeed with breastfeeding is with WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are women who have breastfed and been on WIC. They talk to pregnant women about breastfeeding. Then they support and encourage new breastfeeding mothers. Breastfeeding Peer Counselors work in many local health units across the state.

Mothers may also call the Arkansas WIC Breastfeeding Helpline at 800-445-6175 and talk to a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.

Mothers might feel they should not start breastfeeding because they know they must return to work or school. Electric breast pumps from WIC can help support breastfeeding mothers when that time arrives. Mothers who are separated from their baby because of sickness or the baby is premature, can also receive an electric breast pump from WIC. Manual or hand breast pumps are available for moms that just need to pump every now and then.

Breast pumps allow a mother to leave milk for her baby when she is not there.

The food packages that breastfeeding women and babies receive from WIC also help mothers to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding mothers get more food for a longer time than mothers whose babies receive formula from WIC.

Starting at 6 months, breastfed babies also receive more food than a baby receiving formula from WIC. WIC is for pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women and children

up to their 5th birthday.

To receive WIC benefits, applicants must first meet income guidelines.

Applicants who receive Medicaid, SNAP or TEA are automatically income eligible. Pay stubs,

income tax records for the selfemployed, and a statement from a non-relative for someone with no income are all acceptable as proof of income. Here are the income guidelines.

You will be asked a few questions such as your

Then the WIC staff will talk to you to learn about your nutrition concerns. They will also measure your height and weight and get a tiny amount of blood from your finger to see if you are low in iron. Blood is not obtained on babies until they are 6 months old. WIC professional staff will help you decide on goals you would like to reach to improve the health of your family. One goal might be to learn more about breastfeeding!

With graduation fast approaching for many of the nation’s young people, the questionable economy is no doubt a concern for the hundreds of thousands of soonto-be-minted grads about to enter the job market. And with many economists and other prognosticators predicting the economy won’t bounce back until 2010, such trepidation is
