Landscape gardener Beatrice S. de Perlac has constructed a new building, “Villa Maria”, in the grounds of Buchinger Clinic – the first “edible garden” (or “wellness garden”) on the Costa del Sol. Record Participation at Ocean Village Fourteen boats took to the waters of Ocean Village marina for the fifth edition of Gibraltar’s Charity Cardboard Boat Race, double the number from 2012. Miss Gibraltar 2013, Maroua Kharbouch, who was preparing to jet off to Indonesia for the Miss World pageant at the end of September, started the races and presented the prizes.

Med for Cancer

Epic Fund-Raising Race to Ibiza Launched as both a race and a call to action, the “Noman” row challenge between Barcelona and Ibiza was reported to have raised over £500,000, to raise awareness of the HPV-related cancer epidemic in both men and women, and campaign for a universal HPV vaccination. The extreme row 320 kilometres across the Mediterranean, involving two teams of five amateur rowers in eight-metre boats, took 70 hours to complete – with Team Danielle taking line honours.

Later, Tristan Almada, co-founder of the HPV and Anal Cancer Foundation and organiser of the event with New Ocean Wave, said, “I set out to design a journey that recreated the obstacles and unknowns that cancer patients face, but… we experienced higher highs and lower lows than we could ever have imagined. It is a microcosm of what mine and many families affected by cancer experience: highs after knowing that you have beaten the cancer the first time around, and the low when you realise it has come back to consume the person you love the most.”

Similarly, to protect from the sunlight, upholstering in fade-resistant fabrics is highly advisable.

For upholstery, fabrics tend to fall into two categories: synthetic and natural.

The latter includes cotton, relatively durable and resistant to wear and fading; linen, providing a crisp and casual look; and wool, which blends with synthetic fibres for easier maintenance. Also included in this category is leather, which just gets better with age; and silk, for a formal and elegant touch.

Synthetic fabrics include acetate (developed as imitation silk), which is not always practical for everyday use but is resistant to piling and shrinking; and acrylic (imitation wool), softer than natural wool and resistant to dirt and fading. Made from polyester fibres, microfiber is similar to suede and easy to maintain; nylon is also durable though it is susceptible to fading and pilling; and polyester is resistant to wrinkling and fading.

If on a budget, vinyl is more affordable than leather; and rayon is also wellpriced, though prone to wrinkling.

With wallpaper, combining a vibrant colour with a bold pattern is a great way of adding character to a room, dictating the colour scheme and becoming the focal point.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DESIGN

By Alan McDermott (AMC Projects) When I first arrived in Marbella over 15 years ago little thought was given to lighting design. Incredible villas were being built but when dusk fell they became ordinary, as the lighting was so poor.

As the years have passed more and more architects, developers and property owners have realised that good lighting can really add value to a project. However, I am perturbed by the fact that, even now, often it is left to an electrician to do the lighting design, which is like getting the bricklayer to design the house instead of working with an architect.

• In new builds or reforms, always allow a budget for a good lighting installation – nobody likes surprises.

• Think of the running costs against the initial cost of installation – high quality and low consumption will save on maintenance and running costs in the long term.

• In key areas think about the possibility of using different types of lighting on different circuits to allow you to change the look of a room.

• Consider a lighting control system – my advice is to keep it simple!

• Make use of terraces and gardens by adding light points – for dining al fresco in the summer or simply relaxing and reading a book or magazine. www.amcprojects.com

MAISON & OBJET avant-garde design in Paris

The biannual Maison & Objet returns to the Parc des Expositions centre in Paris Nord Villepinte in September for another cutting-edge showcase of latest trends.

Running from 6 to 10 September the pacesetting exhibition’s main theme this season is “Energies”. As the organisers explain, “The time has come to recharge our batteries. There is no question of energy saving when it comes to creativity.

On the contrary, plenty of energy is needed when it comes to spreading the right vibe. Driving forces are being harnessed to anticipate the upheaval of the changes in progress and stimulate the dynamic of high-voltage desire. Positive waves and optimism generators are electrifying the status quo. This constructive movement is liberating the imagination, reviving unexpected aesthetics and drawing on alternative currents.”

Another highlight of the autumn-winter edition is “Tendances”, covering three categories: Illuminations – “An era plunged into obscurity seeks sources of illumination.

Dynamic Creativity in London

Now in its 11th year, the 2013 London Design Festival from 14 to 22 September will feature 250 partners and 300 events. These include its own varied programme of commissioned projects, with highlights at St Paul’s Cathedral and its hub venue, the Victoria and Albert Museum.

“It is a strength that design can interest a public as well as a professional audience,” said festival director Ben Evans in announcing the 2013 programme. “The London Design Festival is designed to do just that, with trade fairs alongside public installations. Design is for everyone.”

Summer Previews

Germany took centre-stage over summer with two of the country’s leading fairs held in Hamburg and Frankfurt.

At the Earlybird fair in Hamburg in July, trade visitors were able to view product innovations and consumer trends in three exhibition areas, Living, Giving and Showing, with the exhibitors including international brand manufacturers, sales agencies, design-oriented companies and startups. Next year the fair moves to Hanover, from 11 to 13 January and 26-28 July (www.earlybird-messe.de) In August, attention turned to Frankfurt for the Tendence international consumer goods platform, featuring products covering a broad spectrum. A Truly Smart Home

The state-of-the-art villa taking shape in one of the finest spots in La Zagaleta, from where it takes in a broad expanse of hillside, coastline and sea, involves the complete metamorphosis of a home built here in the 1970s. The evolution of what we consider to be luxury, and above all modern comfort, is clearly showcased in this project, for what was once a luxurious villa no longer matches up to the latest requirements. Creating such a brand new home from an existing one is not an easy task, all the more so when working with a team that rejects any compromises to quality and concept in its desire to make this a landmark home. Given this, it is perhaps not surprising to find that Villa Fortuna contains many highly innovative features that are unique in this region. “We have aimed to surpass the normal standards,” says Udo, and it shows in the use of reinforced

steel ceiling beams that add load-bearing capacity to the structure and take away the need for columns. This, in turn, creates clean open spaces in areas such as the living room, where natural light floods into the house from a glass ledge connecting the covered terrace to the main structure.

One floor up, it forms a glass floor section of the main bedroom suite’s large private terrace.

BLACKSHAW INTERIOR DESIGN WAS CONTRACTED BY GRAVITY INTERNATIONAL, ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST GLOBAL INVESTMENT COMPANIES, TO DESIGN AND FIT OUT THEIR 500 SQUARE METRE OFFICE SPACE ON MARBELLA’S GOLDEN MILE. Before commencing work on the project, the interior designers needed to obtain a better understanding of the company’s structure, values and beliefs, as well as its employees’ views. “We also needed to get a better feeling for the space itself,” explains company founder and owner Sally Blackshaw.

“We therefore spent time with the company to better understand its needs and undertook a thorough analysis of the office space so we could provide Gravity International with a design that would optimise the use of space, light, materials and services.”

According to Blackshaw, an office space should inspire, communicate and engage. “It should express the value the employer has for the employee and should convey the image clients and visitors have of a company.”

The clients also wanted the design to “speak” to investors, communicating trust,

quality, and assurance to those they are dealing with, while maintaining a modern edge. A unique layout was established first, making the 60 square metre conference room the core central feature. The curved glass walls “inspire future thinking and decision-making”. There are also open office areas and separate offices within, for each activity.

The overall look and feel is contemporary. This is achieved through the use of materials such as laser cut wall panels and curved glass partitions. The reception desk is a feature in its own right, with black Krion top surfaces and backlit LED polished chrome logos.

The lighting in the entrance has also won design awards and has been used in influential projects all around the world.

Is your garden trendy? A must-have in gardening at the moment is to include pebbles, especially white, and non-vegetable elements.

As a garden designer I look for a good balance in design and ecology, and incorporating pebbles in your garden gives us both. Any surface covered by pebbles cuts down our water consumption and is a fantastic element to create contrasts in colours, textures and surfaces. To play with pebbles and draw different shaped surfaces is fun and makes our garden much more interesting.

As with interiors and architecture, in gardening we are looking for clean and easy maintenance: no dark, dirty or forgotten corners – everything must be in its place. Do not worry: the free growth of plants will contribute to providing warmth in our design.

Separation between the lawn and plants can be achieved with a clean line of

iron. Other non-vegetable elements should also be taken into consideration, such as wood, large rocks, shallow surfaces of water, sand and sculptures… they all contribute to making your garden trendy.

The size of our garden, big or small, should not concern us. The same parameters must be applied: not a single square metre can be forgotten.

Especially during warm weather, the interior of the home should have a smooth communication with the garden.

Retirement gardening… for pleasure and health Gardening remains a major retirement activity in Spain although our surveys suggest that more women than men actively garden on a regular basis. This is a pity as gardening offers interesting mental and physical activity in touch with and managing nature.

In spite of the amazing achievements of technology over the past century a garden designed, developed and nurtured over 10 or 20 years is probably one of the most complex, challenging and continuous projects one can undertake in retirement – and even lifetime. But many do it because the results are very visibly satisfying and self-fulfilling, and doing it in partnership with a spouse can rebuild relationships that declined during busy working lives.

Also, gardening can be practised even into one’s nineties, as active gardens can be reduced in size and enviable mini gardens can be created even on apartment terraces and balconies.

Some of the other reasons retirement gardening is popular are as follows: • It can be practised in gardens and allotments, in patios and courtyards, and on apartment terraces, balconies and window sills.

• Having a garden to potter around in can help the transition from paid work to retirement, as it has different and interesting demands season by season.

• Gardens provide opportunities for brain and brawn. This enables both partners to combine their relative strengths and weaknesses.

• With just a few hours a week it is perfectly possible to become extremely self-sufficient in ecologically grown herbs, vegetables and fruit – again, even on a mini scale.

• As one becomes infirm it is possible to work sitting down by gardening in tall containers and on specially constructed growing tables.

Many people think their garden is not as big as they would like it to be. Many times it is more a case of no concept or no order to the space than its actual size.

A professional can enhance this sensation by developing a good design project.

A master class for learning about these effects is the fantastic “Nimphaeas Series” and the “Season and Moments” views of Giverny in the garden of famous French painter Claude Monet. In his paintings he achieved, in the plane of the canvas, one of the best sensations of depth, using medium-sized brush strokes.

In many of them the perspective appears when you move away. The dramatic contrast of shadows and lights, with the superb combination of hot and cold colours, produces a three-dimensional space and generates a climax. This is similar to my iris garden, where the play of pale purple-blue, white and sky blue gives a sensation of depth.

In every space with texture we can create a similar “trompe-l’œil “. It is easy to enhance length with the combination of large leaves such as fan palms (Chamerops humilis) and Honeybush (Meilanthus major) and smaller leaves with lighter texture such as stipa grass (Nissella tenuissima). The contrast of both textures on a sequence of different planes always generates the sensation of a larger space.

For a medium-sized garden or small patio, geometrical perspective with a central focus makes the space look more expansive. In the design (pictured) for a very small terrace, the contrast of materials such as wood and pavement stones gives the wall a new dimension and a sensation of deep space.

For a green wall there is a set of different systems to grow up, in a vertical plane, any kind of plant in many different conditions: outside in a façade or wall fence, or inside like a patio or living room indoor garden.

In this wall design, the Vertigo garden design studio evaluated light and conditions to create a living painting: an attractive small landscape with different textures and colours, fresh green, silver and purple.

Different fern spices, Tillandsias and Soleirolas, were used, and for the frame material we selected non-bright aluminium – a lighter effect perfect for integration into a modern ambience. Like a large painting, a small garden in a room gives us the sensation of freshness, good health and a larger space.

For plots where the garden takes on a large dimension we can play with big leaves with bigger texture or queen palm (Bismarkia nobilis) for longer distance on the back plane. This, in combination with smaller leaves on the front plane for the shorter distance, adds interest to the far-away point.

IN THE CREATIVE HEART OF AMSTERDAM When Hyatt decided to open the global chain’s first hotel in the Netherlands, the key premise was that it should “beat with the same heart as the city”. In this case the city was Amsterdam, synonymous with style and character, and leading interior and product designer Marcel Wanders was commissioned to bring his vision to the property’s “adventurous design concept”. As a local himself, he was the ideal person to embed the flavours and free-spirited, rich and diverse cultural character of Amsterdam in a building that is set on the Prinsengracht, site of the former public library and a part of the iconic ring of canals that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010.

The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht hotel is centrally located in the heart of the city, surrounded by the creative scene and dynamic spirit of the Jordaan district, as well as the adjacent “Nine Streets” – a charming neighbourhood filled

with art galleries, specialty shops, fashion boutiques and stylish restaurants.

Wanders’ finished result reflects a modern view of Dutch history: guests can delve into a piece of Amsterdam wherever they turn… the artistic wallpaper in the guest rooms, the books on the shelves and the innovative cuisine at Bluespoon, the establishment’s specialty restaurant.

Wanders worked with various sources of inspiration throughout the hotel, integrating the heritage of the hotel surroundings (including the Golden Age, Dutch Delft blue, tulips and colour orange), the library of books and the connecting polarities of Amsterdam’s cultural melting pot.

Depending on the work’s “level of intensity and outspokenness”, selections from the video art collection are showcased in different areas of the hotel: in the public areas of the ground floor, in the hallways throughout the various floors and through a special video channel available on the televisions in the guest rooms. The largest display screen for the presentation of video footage is located in the lounge and is comprised of nine 60-inch televisions.

The hotel’s 117 guest rooms and five suites – covering a range of 15 different types due to the 1970s-style structure of the monumental former public library – feature open plan layouts for maximum space and natural light.

In line with the overall design concept of the hotel, the rooms reflect a view of Dutch history and feature small custom details to create an inspiring environ-

ment, including the hand-painted washbasin in Marcel Wanders’ signature “One Minute Delft Blue” style, the oversized book-shaped work desk and the unique wallpaper.

Aston Martin has celebrated its 100th anniversary with the unveiling of a stunning concept sports car created to epitomise the marque’s venerable history.

The 6.0-litre V12-powered CC100 Speedster Concept looks to the past, specifically Aston Martin’s triumphant racing DBR1, and to the future with an insight into potential design direction.

Speaking at the car’s world debut in Germany, CEO Dr Ulrich Bez said the CC100 “represents our fantastic sporting heritage, our exceptional design capability, our superb engineering know-how and, above all, our adventurous spirit. I have nicknamed it ‘DBR100’ because of its affinity to the great 1959 race-winning cars and, of course, our 100-year anniversary in 2013.”

The car was designed and constructed in fewer than six months at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon. As chief exterior designer Miles Nurnberger explains, “The brief was very simple, yet enormously testing: create something that reflects the 100 years of Aston Martin heritage and signals the future of the brand.

The idea of an iconic speedster concept that nods to the Le Mans − and Nürburgring – winning cars of 1959 soon came, and we have had complete freedom to shape this car.”

Measuring almost four and a half metres nose to tail, and over two metres wide (including mirrors) the Speedster Concept body is described as being “a classic example of the almost infinitely flexible nature of Aston Martin’s trademark Vertical Horizontal engineering philosophy”.

With a body and interior crafted from carbon fibre, the CC100 utilises the latest generation AM11 naturally aspirated V12 gasoline engine mated to a six-speed hydraulically actuated automated sequential manual transmission. Controlled via steering column-mounted paddle shifts the lightweight gearbox delivers sporting changes suited to the Speedster’s track-focused nature.

The drivetrain will power the CC100 from rest to 100 km/h in a little over four seconds, while the top speed is limited to 290 km/h.

Beetle Fiesta by the Baltic There were pick-up trucks and race versions, some with neon wheels… In all 414 Beetles, in various shapes and sizes, converged on the Baltic coast in August for an open-air party of fans of all “round” Volkswagen models (Beetle, New Beetle and The Beetle).

Now in its ninth year, the Sunshine Tour is the largest private meeting of Beetle lovers of all three Volkswagen generations – hundreds of Volkswagen vehicles from six decades, travelling from throughout Europe.

The 2013 title as the “most beautiful beach Beetle of the Year” went to Marthe and Magnus Schwarz from Neustadt/Holstein, for their convertible in a knitted robe. “It took us seven months and 40 kilograms of wool to create this;

it’s been so much fun!”, said Marthe. “It’s been a tough decision to pick only one most beautiful Beetle,” noted Gaby Kraft, who has been organising the tour since 2004.

One of the tour specialities is that both the cars and the visitors are bedecked in fancy costumes: from glamour Beetle, rock ’n’ roll Beetle and wedding Beetle to beach Beetle, 007 Beetle and even Charleston Beetle.

Macaao Beach Club SOPHISTICATED, RELAXED AND AFFORDABLE...

Macaao Beach Bar in San Pedro de Alcántara has recently been taken over by the charming Belgian restaurateurs Christine and Michel Dhondt and it has already received rave reviews on the likes of Tripadvisor. Home & Lifestyle Magazine finds out a little more about this sophisticated yet relaxed chiringuito that is now open San Pedro beachgoers...

Christine and Michel have owned restaurants in the salubrious area of Knokke in Belgium and still currently run a huge and very successful beach club there called Zoutestrand. When they bought their home in Spain a few years ago, their dream was to open a beach club in Marbella, and when Macaao became available they jumped at the opportunity.

Chef Alex has worked in Michelin-star restaurants back in Belgium, but he has since made a name for himself working in prestigious restaurants on the Costa del Sol. As Christine comments, “Michel and Alex went to school together and refer to each other as ‘brothers’ as they have always stayed in touch – they have a true bond!” It is probably this great relationship between the owners

Photos: David Toms that makes the restaurant so successful, as there is a great spirit amongst the staff. Everyone who works there comes across as enthusiastic and wellinformed, offering an attentive service without being overbearing.

The menu is decidedly French/Belgian, with a good range of wines and champagnes and ingredients not often found on beach club menus across the Coast, such as oysters, foie gras, grey shrimps and mussels. The prices are around what you would expect to pay for the quality of the ingredients, and the portions are generous. The dining area is extremely comfortable, with a fantastic view out to sea offering a tranquil and elegant place to enjoy the beach – which is also suitable for children.

Chef’s Signature Selection Giacomo Muzio is a Peruvian with Italian roots who is head chef at the El Banco restaurant in Aloha Pueblo (opened in summer). He has composed a menu which is a delicious mix of traditional cuisine from around the world including Peruvian dishes, Spanish classics, Italian favourites highlighted by homemade pasta and risotto, Asian

specialities such as fried rice, and excellent quality meat and fish.

As a proud Peruvian his favourite dish is ceviche. As he explains, “Ceviche is the Peruvian national dish and we’re all crazy about it. It’s so fresh, light, healthy and packed with flavour; for me it’s one of the best dishes there is.” Here’s how to make it…

Ingredients:

500gr white fish. 200gr prawns, octopus or other seafood (cooked) 7 ripe limes. Coriander. Chilli to taste . Salt. Pepper. Red onion Preparation:

Cut the fish into one-centimetre pieces.

Cut the onion into small strips.

Chop the coriander and chilli.

Cook the seafood.

Squeeze the juice from the limes.

Marinate the pieces of fish in the lime juice.

You can experiment with the time, but this is how they do it at El Banco… Add salt, pepper, chilli and coriander to the lime juice and leave to marinate for eight minutes. Add the cooked seafood and red onion and leave to marinate for another five minutes.

Serve on a bed of lettuce and garnish with corn, sweet potato or cassava.

Costa Blanca Stars

Most lovers of Spanish wine can count off a number of acknowledged regions, but start having to rack their brains around number 20. And, although there are currently nearly 70 fully classified areas of the country that produce wine, most of them are hardly heard of outside their immediate area. Add to this the other classifications such as Vinos del Pago, Vinos de la Tierra de..., etc., and the whole thing is a right muddle.

Even the little Alicante Denomination of Origen (DO) is divided into two subzones, the furthest from the sea being the hotter area that produces desserttype wines and the other, the cooler lowlands.

Enrique Mendoza started planting vines here back in the 1960s in Alfaz de Pi, that strangely-named coastal town on the Costa Blanca more famous for its sugar-loaf rock than its vineyards. It was not until 1990 that the wines became accepted outside the area, but now they are among the best from a region that is not in the top category, and only recognised by serious wine aficionados.

Pepe, Enrique’s son, an oenologist who has worked in New Zealand, Argentina, Tuscany and Bordeaux, is now the driving force at the bodega, and it is no coincidence that 50 per cent of the wines they make go for export. They try to

use natural methods as much as possible with zero pesticides, and fertilise using manure from their own livestock.

The 11 wines made by the family add up to around 350,000 bottles annually, and many have won top prizes. The object is to grow grapes that are as small as possible so that the superior proportion of skin to flesh results, according to Pepe, in wines of greater depth and character. Apart from local varieties, there is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, with Chardonnay and Muscatel for the whites.

If you see any of Mendoza’s wines on a restaurant list, do try them. The valuefor-money element is interesting, with some of the lower-priced labels representing excellent value, particularly the Petit Verdot Crianza 2011 at €10 retail.

The Shiraz Crianza 2010 costs €12 and the Merlot Monastrell 2010 €9.50. These are in my opinion more worthwhile going after than the pricier, but still very good, Estrecho, or the Santa Rosa, both at €21.

Artificial Pancreas May Help Diabetics

Individuals with type-1 diabetes often have a major problem with hypoglycemia (blood glucose levels dip too low). Now, researchers are reporting significant advances with a new artificial pancreas system (MiniMed 530 G system), which includes an insulin pump, software and sensors that track blood glucose levels on a continuous basis.

In a new study just published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers showed that this system could successfully reduce the duration and incidence of night-time hypoglycemia. The researchers conducted a study with 247 patients and found that the artificial pancreas could reduce the incidence of nighttime hypoglycemia events by 32 per cent and the duration and severity of those incidents by 38 per cent. With this system, insulin delivery is shut off for two hours once glucose levels reach a predefined threshold. The device is currently undergoing review by regulators.

Hypoglycemia is of great concern because it can lead to unconsciousness, seizures and even death. Overnight hypoglycemia is a concern for most patients and family members of those with type-1 diabetes. “Our work is the first large randomised controlled trial testing the threshold suspend feature,” says Dr. Rich Bergenstal, executive director of the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. “This technology promises to be valuable to patients today and is a key step in the development of a fully automated artificial pancreas for people with diabetes.”

New Blood Test For Colon Cancer

Bionic Eye Breakthrough

After more than two decades of field work, the first bionic eye for the blind is finally available. It is called the Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System (“Argus II”) and it is used to treat patients with late stage retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

The system involves implanting a small electronic device in and around the eye. It also uses a tiny video camera attached to a pair of glasses and a video processing unit that is worn or carried by the person.

The Argus II was just recently approved for commercial use. RP is a rare inherited, degenerative eye disease that often results in profound vision loss to the level of bare light perception or no light perception. The Argus II works by converting video images captured by a miniature camera, housed in the patient’s glasses, into a series of small electrical pulses that are transmitted

A new blood test may soon be able to detect cancer-related microRNA in the blood before a tumour even develops in the colon. American researchers at the Gastrointestinal Cancer Research Lab at Baylor Research Institute in Texas are reporting that they have come up with a simple blood-based test that examines the levels of a single microRNA. The investigators conducted a study with hundreds of patients with colorectal polyps and cancers and found that the test could accurately identify up to 92 per cent of patients with colorectal cancer. In addition, the test could accurately identify up to 82 per cent of patients with advanced colonic polyps, which present the highest risk for developing into colorectal cancers several years later in life.

“This blood-based test could be transformative in how we screen patients for colorectal cancer,” says Baylor Research Institute president Dr. Michael Ramsay, “It would save lives and could result in major savings of health care dollars.”

For now you still need to go for your routine colonoscopy screening. According to Dr. Ramsey, more testing needs to be done before this new bloodbased test is ready for commercial use.

Joseph Klibansky Innovative Maestro of New Media Art CREATING FUTURIST LANDSCAPES OF THE IMAGINATION

In the world of art a copious dose of hyperbole is sometimes prematurely bestowed on up-and-coming artists. Still a relatively young 29, Joseph Klibansky is being hailed as one of the most creative and exciting artists in the contemporary international art scene – but in this case the acclaim is abundantly justified.

Born in South Africa, in a creative family – his father was a photographer and both parents were involved in advertising and fashion – Klibansky graduated at a Dutch business school but soon decided to pursue his main passion: art.

His flourishing reputation has essentially been forged with a series of stunningly evocative, large-scale, idealistic digital paintings. Built up through hundreds of layers of photography enriched with acrylic paint on archival cotton paper overlaid with a liquid resin, these dramatically dynamic artworks “convey a layering and compression of time, space and place… creating dreamy images of cities, combining past and future”. His main inspirations are architecture and the city, “particularly the accelerated, compressed and densely populated urban environments of the 21st century”.

However, this multi-talented artist is constantly exploring new concepts of mixed media art, as he explained to Home & Lifestyle during an exclusive interview this summer at the Red Penguin Gallery in Marbella, where his work was on display as part of the “Beautiful and the Best” exhibition.

Tell us a little about your origins as an artist…

It was always in my upbringing to respect art and look at fashion, colours and balances, and also for artwork to have a meaning, not only purely aesthetic but also to have a message. Before I was busy discovering things but I didn’t really start doing art until I was 22. I was in business school and had to do an apprenticeship, in an office, a student magazine, and when I had my break I would walk in the city every day, past an art gallery, and I always found myself looking through the window. I thought, I have something to add to this art landscape, and basically that was the departure point for my style. I never wanted to do something that someone else was doing.

I had a vision and, being a new artist in this era, I really wanted to be working with new digital means like computer and digital photography. There was no art education or anything: from one day to another I just started trying things out and after a while I showed it to people to see their reactions.

What was their reaction?

Very good, and that gave me the confidence to pursue a career path that parents would usually discourage, because it’s notoriously known for you not being able to pay your rent (laughs). I showed my pieces and organised an exhibition in a garden with friends and they said, “Wow, this is fresh”, and they started supporting me and buying some pieces. Everything started very small. You sell a piece for few hundred bucks and you buy a new canvas or new item. I was working in a discotheque at the time, and doing the apprenticeship during the day.

When, and how, did it all take off?

My parents were helping me, my mother acting as my agent, and we took an artwork in a small Renault car and showed it to a gallery in Paris, and another gallery. Then one gallery showed a piece, and we tried to find another one, then we sold the piece, and realised, hey, it’s working. After a while galleries start calling you, and that’s a nice thing. Now we’re really all over the world, at all the major art fairs, in the US, in Miami and Chicago, and Singapore. We’re doing Paris, Geneva, Dubai and Beirut, as well as here in Marbella.

What is the main secret to your success?

I like thinking clear-headedly about art. You don’t have to be a stoned, drunk guy to make art, and I think that’s really important. You can be very sharp and focused and really think about your ideas, and that’s what I want to bring to the new generation of art. You don’t have to go to art school. Maybe you’re in fashion or maybe you’re in business, but your passion is art and you can start thinking about that.

What are you currently working on?

I’ve been to Azerbaijan, to do artwork on Baku and on the Baku White City Project. They’re taking old oilfields and converting them to plots of land with the most amazing architecture. They’re building a whole new city there, with top world architects like Norman Foster, and now I’m there to do the artwork and probably also a big sculpture.

I’m also working on bronze structures, but not traditional. When you say bronze people think patinayed, dark, black pieces, but mine are polished, shiny, really contemporary subjects. I’m creating structures like huge cola bottles and Chanel bottles and Starbucks beakers, the things that people drink and don’t think about and throw away, and I’m making them into icons of popular culture.

I’ve also done covers for (Dutch DJ and trance music producer) Armin van Buuren. It brings my art to a new audience because he has millions of fans worldwide. I try to make work that’s very young and has the feeling of a music video in a way. You can see the music and movement in my work, and that’s why I have a big following on Facebook of younger people that’s growing every day.

Would it be fair to say then that your kind of art appeals more to younger art lovers, or have you found that it is popular across the age spectrum?

It’s a broad spectrum. I have collectors 20 years old who are saving up to have an artwork, and also wealthy entrepreneurs collecting work. I have a lot of business clients, big corporate companies and property developers.

What I’m doing now, which is really exciting, is I’m publishing studies of my work. I have original studies with paint and pencil and we’re starting to sell those because we see that there are a lot of younger people who don’t have a big budget who want to have a piece. It’s a print but it’s not only a print: I paint on all the prints, so it’s really unique, a limited edition of maybe 50. A piece like that could be between €1,250 and €2,500.

So you aim to keep your work fairly accessible?

I’m not doing posters for 10 bucks, because I want it to be special. When someone collects a work if they have to save to buy the work it’s a big thing for them.

Even if it’s €1,250, it’s still a lot of money. I know that and I respect that.

You graduated at a business school in Holland…. has that given you a better understanding and appreciation of the “commercial” side of art?

You try to be impulsive and make things that you really want to make, but then you think about the large investment. But the main thing about an artist is that he makes something crazy. If you’re doing something super sensible then it’s not

exciting, and you want to surprise art collectors. You have to be pushing the boundaries as an artist. And yes, that’s a risk. It’s an entrepreneurial risk: you have to an entrepreneur if you want to be a successful artist.

Another area you are exploring is 3D printing…

It’s real state-of-the-art and, again, part of my philosophy of using new means to create art. In this piece (“baby” on show at the Red Penguin gallery) we also use 24-carat golf leaf. It’s like super-old and super-modern coming together. Gilding is such an old technique and to apply it to 3D printing is really unique.

Any special projects for the Costa del Sol? I want to do monumental sculptures, and I hope to place a huge sculpture in Marbella. I would like to do a really big baby with an ice cream, and put it in the centre of Banús or somewhere for everyone to enjoy – just to take a picture with the sculpture and put it online. I would really love that.

The Future of Music Technology

For as long as I can remember I’ve loved music. All types of music, from Mozart to Morrisey, from Pavarotti to Placebo. I’ve also always tried to envisage not only what we’ll be listening to in the future but also how we’ll be listening.

In the last few decades we’ve gone from having 10 songs on a big piece of plastic to 100,000 songs in the palm of your hand. In terms of convenience and accessibility this is of course brilliant, but many would say the new digital sound will never be as good as the analogue EPs of the past. So, is vinyl a truly better sound than mp3 or wav? And does convenience outweigh quality?

Without delving into the myriad of technological answers and jargon, I think the answer to both is yes. Firstly, the quality of audio… This has been debated since the early ‘80s when the compact disc was introduced to the masses and the digital audio age was born. Then came the turn of the MPEG-1 Audio Layer III (more commonly referred to as MP3), and as these new forms of audio format have been introduced the sound quality has been slightly reduced.

This has been mainly attributed to compression, the process of getting your favourite song on to a smaller device. When creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits (size) the file may use per second of audio. The higher the bit rate, the larger the compressed file will be, and, generally, the closer it will sound to the original file.

Which brings us on to the second quandary: does convenience outweigh quality? If numbers and progress are anything to go by, then the simple answer is yes.

These days, convenience is key. With your smartphone, this very second, you can almost immediately listen to any song ever released. And when you listen, you’ll be listening to an MP3.

Now let me introduce you to the Waveform Audio File Format, more commonly known as WAV. This is an audio format that is much larger in size than MP3, but that is due to it being uncompressed and therefore of higher quality.

The law of diminishing returns states that, in all productive processes, adding more of one factor of production, while holding all others constant (“ceteris paribus”), will at some point yield lower per-unit returns. The law applies in this scenario as to the MP3/WAV file and the limits of human hearing. I propose that if you do your own listening you will find a difference between WAV and MP3, and when you do find it you will find it indeed small, in the big picture of the overall listening experience.

I propose that to hear the difference between a high resolution MP3 and WAV/CD you will have to be listening intently, and focused on the subtleties; otherwise it’s the same thing.

Therein lies the diminishing return, and no Petabytes of storage will change what the normal Joe thinks is an adequate file. What would it benefit a chef to belittle the inferior taste buds and decision making of would-be patrons going to the local restaurant instead of their “fine” dining establishment. The chef wants them to go to his restaurant, obviously, and there is some form of inadequacy there. The average diner just wants a decent meal, and isn’t concerned with the Michelin stars. Would you really miss the saffron in a curry? Do you really need those extra frequencies with headphones jogging in the park?

The good news? As technology moves forward, we are seeing huge leaps in memory storage. This means we can have quality and convenience. Soon you’ll be able to have a Terabyte of storage on your handheld audio player, which approximately equates to 100,000 high quality WAV songs to listen to whenever and wherever you want.

However, memory capacities may soon be meaningless with the introduction of online music streaming. Music is quickly merging with the computer revolution, and music sites allow users to stream millions of songs online for free. These websites, combined with faster network speeds on mobile phones, may soon provide music lovers with the entire Internet at their disposal.

These technologies are only an inkling of what music technology might hold for the future. With so many advancements looming on the horizon, we are sure to look back on our iPods with the same nostalgia that we now have for records and cassettes.

It’s hard to make predictions for audio devices, but I have always imagined a future where music can be almost beamed directly into your head. No need for headphones, just think of a song or a radio station and you will be able to hear it. I’ve also thought about combining the senses, an audio player that emits different coloured lights to accompany the music. Maybe even vibrations too so you get that all-round feeling of enjoyment that a really good piece of music should deliver.

Will we ever see these advances in music technology? Only time will tell.

A TAX HELL JURISDICTION

Tax haven countries are well known to everyone, especially politicians and the tax office. The definition of a tax haven jurisdiction is a country where the income or corporate tax rate is zero or very low.

Over the last few years, they have been the focus of attention of legislators trying to combat and chase funds deposited there. Enormous efforts, human resources and money have been dedicated to identifying the beneficiaries and their assets and wealth for tax purposes.

However, no one talks about “tax hell jurisdictions”, which is one of the main reasons why tax havens have flourished. High tax rates, social security charges and rigid labour laws in most European countries are not only contributing to prolonging the recession but also encouraging entrepreneurs and companies to restructure their businesses and even move to countries where taxes and costs are more acceptable.

As an example, in 2012 the income tax rate in some European countries reached more than 50 per cent of income. It could reach 56.6 per cent in Sweden, 55.4 per cent in Denmark, 52 per cent in Spain, 50 per cent in Austria and Belgium, 48 per cent in Ireland, and 45 per cent in France, Germany and Greece.

In addition to income tax paid by Europeans, if we add the VAT (IVA) and special taxes levied on consumer products and fuel, the tax burden supported by taxpayers increases the overall pressure, which makes expectations of future prosperity extremely gloomy.

Europe cannot compromise on the social welfare system and there must be a balance between public income and expenditure. However, on the income side lower income and corporate taxes increases investments in productive goods and services, encourages capital to flow into the country and changes the attitudes and expectations of consumers in a positive way, resulting in more expenditure and higher economic activity – which generates more revenues for the government.

A flat rate of income tax and capital gains tax between 15 and 20 per cent would certainly boost the economy, attract investors of all types and make tax havens much less interesting.

The financial system has suffered from liquidity and an excess of real estate assets belonging to customers unable to pay their mortgages. To allow capital to flow into the country from abroad, and especially from tax haven jurisdictions, the “Act 10/2010” regarding anti-money laundering and finance of terrorism should make a clear distinction and classify the origin of funds into two (or more) categories: funds obtained from criminal activities; and funds obtained legally through commercial transactions and deposited in these tax haven jurisdictions for confidentiality, inheritance and to reduce the general tax charge.

Easing the inflow of funds from the second category will have a positive impact on the European economy and on the financial system. Investments in real estate would certainly activate the economy and other sectors such as construction and tourism.

Spain, like other European countries, should consider seriously implementing a one or two flat rate income and capital gains tax depending on the income level of individuals. Labour reforms and a reduction in social security charges are also essential for the economy.

This is the key to activating the economy and attracting foreign investments.

Positive Signs

The Isley Brothers sang “Summer Breeze” and the next line… makes me feel fine.

Well, the breeze has been blowing through the various economies and generally speaking they all feel fine. Most recent economic data suggests that improvements are being seen around the globe, but this does not stop some of the concerns that have been in the markets for some time.

Across the euro zone the same names are still in the frame. Greece, even though it received its bailout, has now found a black hole rumoured to be around €11 billion and is also having difficulty selling some of its state assets.

Going forward, thankfully the IMF is still playing ball with Greece, and the EU has also agreed to reduce the amount they are supposed to raise by the end of 2013, although they will have to play catch up in 2014.

Portugal also experienced some political uncertainty which impacted upon its bond yields, Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy was in the news over some alleged irregular payments, and Italy also managed to stay in the political spotlight with Silvio Berlusconi and his prosecution.

Further concern in Italy came from data that confirmed its economy shrank for the eighth consecutive quarter, although the pace of contraction has slowed.

Public debt is rising upwards and may reach 133 per cent of GDP this year, certainly a level that signals danger.

Brighter news from the zone, however, was a small step recovery in services and the manufacturing sector, which returned to growth at 50.3. French consumer confidence also rose to a three-month high. A further indication was reflected across the euro zone with consumer confidence improving to an eight-month high. Unemployment across the zone also fell and that’s the first time since April 2011. Okay, it’s still too high but a step in the right direction at last.

The European Central Bank held interest rates, and inflation is pretty steady at 1.6 per cent, so the question being raised is: has the worst passed and will the economy return to growth by the year end? Let’s hope so, and maybe the infighting between the International Monetary Fund and Germany will come to a mutual end.

In the UK the services sector, which accounts for 70 per cent-plus of GDP, is flying and leapt to 60.2, up from 56.9 in June, and that’s the highest level since December 2006. The rise followed strong growth in manufacturing, at a 28-month high of 54.6, and indicates pretty decent growth. The Nationwide house price survey came out and told us house prices had risen by 3.9 per cent year on year.

Mark Carney took over the reigns at the Bank of England and decided to leave interest rates unchanged. Since taking the reigns he has been fortunate enough that the data from the UK has been upbeat. We all waited to hear his first inflation report and what his “forward thinking” was all about. Basically, Carney has committed to keeping the current interest rate of 0.5 per cent for as long as unemployment remains above seven per cent, so very similar to the policy in the US. The Cooperative Bank is still in the news – how is it raising funds to recapitalise – and the Royal Bank of Scotland has a new chief who takes over from Stephen Hester. Ross McEwan is joining with a basic salary of only £1 million and has not asked for a bonus this year.

Stateside, it’s still good news with house prices up again, an extra 1.2 million back in work during 2013 and some big names reporting decent half-year results, notably Bank of America, the second biggest bank in the US, which came up with a 70 per cent rise in second quarter profits. The economy grew by 1.7 per cent quarter on quarter despite the last round of tax hikes, so we continue to wait for news on the easing of mortgage-backed securities buying (or pumping money into the economy) as investors are just a little worried that tapering may start as early as September. We will wait and see.
